RESUMO

La evaluación de la marcha en cinta caminadora puede resultar relevante para la toma de decisiones clínicas. No obstante, factores demográficos como la edad y el IMC pueden alterar la interpretación de los resultados. Nuestro objetivo fue obtener variables espacio- temporales, energéticas y costo de transporte durante la velocidad autoseleccionada en cinta caminadora para una muestra representativa de adultos uruguayos (n=28) y evaluar si diferentes rangos de edades e IMC pueden ser factores a tener en cuenta en pruebas clínicas donde se consideren dichas variables. Participaron 17 hombres y 11 mujeres (39,3 ± 14,8 años, 75,9 ± 12,5 kg, 1,74 ± 0,09 m, IMC 25,2 ± 4,06). Se realizó una reconstrucción 3D del movimiento en forma sincronizada con el consumo energético. Se obtuvieron valores de referencia y luego de agrupar los participantes según su IMC y rango de edad se compararon los datos mediante test de t (p≤0.05). Los resultados revelaron discrepancias significativas en las medidas espacio-temporales y energéticas de los adultos uruguayos al caminar en cinta con respecto a la literatura. La marcha difiere entre adultos jóvenes y de mediana edad en su velocidad autoseleccionada (p=0,03), longitud de zancada (p=0,01), trabajo mecánico externo (<0,001) y recuperación de energía mecánica (0,009), destacando la importancia de considerar la edad en evaluaciones clínicas. El IMC no influyó significativamente en estas variables. Estos hallazgos subrayan la necesidad de ajustar las interpretaciones de las pruebas clínicas de la marcha sobre cinta caminadora en adultos uruguayos de mediana edad (45 a 65 años).


Treadmill gait assessment can be relevant for clinical decision-making. However, demographic factors such as age and BMI may alter result interpretation. Our aim was to obtain spatiotemporal, energetic, and cost of transport variables during self-selected treadmill walking speed for a representative sample of Uruguayan adults (n=28) and to assess if different age ranges and BMI could be factors to consider in clinical tests involving these variables. Seventeen men and eleven women participated (39.3 ± 14.8 years, 75.9 ± 12.5 kg, 1.74 ± 0.09 m, BMI 25.2 ± 4.06). A synchronized 3D motion reconstruction was performed with energy consumption. Reference values were obtained and data were compared using t-tests (p≤0.05), after grouping participants by BMI and age range. Results revealed significant discrepancies in spatiotemporal and energetic measures of Uruguayan adults walking on the treadmill, compared to the literature. Gait differed between young and middle-aged adults in their self-selected speed (p=0.03), stride length (p=0.01), external mechanical work (p<0.001), and mechanical energy recovery (0.009), emphasizing the importance of considering age in clinical evaluations. BMI did not significantly influence these variables. These findings underscore the need to adjust interpretations of treadmill gait clinical tests in middle-aged Uruguayan adults (45 to 65 years).


A avaliação da marcha na esteira pode ser relevante para a tomada de decisões clínicas. No entanto, fatores demográficos como idade e IMC podem alterar a interpretação dos resultados. Nosso objetivo foi obter variáveis espaço-temporais, energéticas e custo de transporte durante a velocidade de caminhada autoselecionada na esteira para uma amostra representativa de adultos uruguaios (n = 28) e avaliar se diferentes faixas etárias e IMC podem ser fatores a serem considerados em testes clínicos que envolvam essas variáveis. Dezessete homens e onze mulheres participaram (39,3 ± 14,8 anos, 75,9 ± 12,5 kg, 1,74 ± 0,09 m, IMC 25,2 ± 4,06). Foi realizada uma reconstrução tridimensional do movimento sincronizada com o consumo de energia. Foram obtidos valores de referência e os dados foram comparados usando testes t (p≤0,05), após agrupar os participantes por IMC e faixa etária. Os resultados revelaram discrepâncias significativas nas medidas espaço-temporais e energéticas dos adultos uruguaios ao caminhar na esteira, em comparação com a literatura. A marcha diferiu entre adultos jovens e de meia-idade em sua velocidade autoselecionada (p=0,03), comprimento da passada (p=0,01), trabalho mecânico externo (<0,001) e recuperação de energia mecânica (0,009), destacando a importância de considerar a idade em avaliações clínicas. O IMC não influenciou significativamente essas variáveis. Esses achados destacam a necessidade de ajustar as interpretações dos testes clínicos de marcha na esteira em adultos uruguaios de meia- idade (45 a 65 anos).

SUMMARY: The objective was measure quadricep strength after Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) and kinetic treatment and then determine its impact on the functional recovery of patients with hip osteoarthritis. A total of 79 (25 were male and 54 were female) patients with THA. Exclusion criteria were previous extra-system kinetic treatment, operated on for hip fracture, not completing the treatment. Maximum Isometric Strength (MIS), Time Up and Go (TUG), Modified Harris Hip Score. There was a significant increase in the MIS of the post-treatment operated knee extension in both men and women (p < 0.0001 SE = 0.43; p < 0.0001 SE = 1.22, respectively). In the TUG, the execution time was significantly lower post-treatment in both men and women (p < 0.0001 SE = 0.77; p < 0.0001 SE = 0.94, respectively). The final Harris score increased significantly post-treatment in male and female (p < 0.0001 SE = 2.90; p < 0.0001 SE = 1.96, respectively). the association between MIS and the Harris score, it was noted that, for a 1 kg increase in this measure compared to the initial assessment, the Harris score, after 12 weeks of treatment, increased by 0.179 points (β = 0.179; p = 0.050). The conclusions were Indicate an increase in knee extension MIS of the operated hip after treatment in both sexes. At the same time, functionality increased post-treatment in both male and female.


El objetivo del estudio fue medir la fuerza del músculo cuádriceps femoral después de la artroplastia total de cadera (THA, por sus siglas en inglés) y el tratamiento kinésico, para determinar su impacto en la recuperación funcional de pacientes con osteoartritis de cadera. En el estudio participaron 79 pacientes con THA (25 hombres y 54 mujeres). Se excluyeron quienes tuvieron tratamiento Kinésico previo fuera del hospital, operación por fractura de cadera y no completar el tratamiento. Las principales medidas tomadas fueron: Fuerza Máxima Isométrica (MIS), Time UP and GO (TUG), Puntuación Modificada de Harris de Cadera. Hubo un aumento significativo en la MIS de la extensión de rodilla del lado operado después del tratamiento tanto en hombres (p<0,0001, EE=0,43) como en mujeres (p<0,0001, EE=1,22). En el TUG, el tiempo de ejecución fue significativamente menor después del tratamiento en hombres (p<0,0001, EE=0,77) y mujeres (p<0,0001, EE=0,94). La puntuación final de Harris aumentó significativamente después del tratamiento en hombres (p<0,0001, EE=2,90) y mujeres (p<0,0001, EE=1,96). En cuanto a la asociación entre MIS y la puntuación de Harris, se observó que por cada aumento de 1 kg en esta medida en comparación con la evaluación inicial, la puntuación de Harris aumentó en 0,179 puntos después de 12 semanas de tratamiento (β=0,179; p=0,050). En conclusión se observó un aumento en la MIS de la extensión de rodilla del lado operado después del tratamiento en ambos sexos. Al mismo tiempo, la funcionalidad aumentó después del tratamiento tanto en hombres como en mujeres.

Background: Several studies have reported that marathon runners have a higher risk of upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) post marathon than non-exercising controls. However, other studies did not find a higher risk of URTI in the same participants before and after a marathon, precluding a conclusive consensus. Besides the between-subjects effects, another important confounding factor in these results is the different pre and post follow-up time to track URTI. Objectives: Identify by meta-analysis whether a marathon Running increases the risk of URTI, adjusting the follow-up time to track URTI. Data sources: We searched for articles using MEDLINE (PubMed), Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, and EBSCOhost, combining the marathon and respiratory infection descriptor synonyms, on 1st December 2022. Eligibility criteria: The PICOS framework included human population, comparison between pre and post marathon running, of URTI symptoms (assessed from one to 4 weeks), in noncontrolled intervention studies. Data Synthesis: Because follow-up was longer before the marathon in many studies, we adjusted the number of subjects with infections before marathon to the equivalent post-marathon follow-up duration. There was 18% higher incidence of URTI post-marathon (OR 1.18 95%CI [1.05-1.33], p= 0.005) in a very consistent meta-analysis (I2 = 0%, p = 0.69), with no risk of publication bias (Egger test p-value = 0.82) for the 7 studies included. The main issues with quality of the studies were bias in measuring the outcome, bias in classification of intervention (participation in the marathon) and time-varying confounding (corrected for analysis), and therefore the quality of evidence was moderate (GRADE approach = 3). Limitations: The need for follow-up time adjustment is a limitation, since the number of URTI recorded could be different if the original studies had used the same follow-up time pre and post marathon. The subjectivity of the URTI assessments is another limitation in this field. Conclusions: There is an increased risk of URTI post marathon running and research on this topic to understand mechanisms might support runners to find efficient interventions to reduce this risk. The measurement of isometric muscle torque with hand-held dynamometry is a technique little studied in the pediatric setting for the evaluation of maximal isometric muscle strength. OBJECTIVE: to determine the reliability of hand-held dynamometry to obtain the maximal isometric torque of upper and lower limb muscle groups in Chilean children and adolescents. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Crosssectional study. Seventy-two participants aged between 7 and 15 years were selected from a school in Talca. Maximal isometric torque was recorded in 15 muscle groups of upper and lower limbs through hand-held dynamometry. Intra- and inter-rater evaluation was used, applying the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) to determine the reliability of the tests and Bland-Altman plots to evaluate concordance. RESULTS: The results demonstrated good to excellent inter-rater reliability (ICC = 0.850.98) and intra-rater reliability (ICC = 0.87-0.98). Only two groups, hip extensors and abductors, showed good inter-rater reliability (ICC = 0.85 and ICC = 0.88, respectively); and one group, the ankle dorsiflexors, showed good intra-rater reliability (ICC = 0.87). 100% of the tests presented at least 95.8% inter- and intra-rater agreement on the Bland-Altman plots. CONCLUSION: The evaluation of isometric muscle torque using hand-held dynamometry is a reliable procedure for use in different growth periods.

Batch spawner fishes develop successive clutches of oocytes which allows them to participate in many reproductive cycles during their adult life (iteroparous) and spawn in multiple events within each breeding cycle. Here, ovarian follicular development was morpho-functionally analyzed in females of the iteroparous batch spawner fish Gymnocorymbus ternetzi. To obtain better insights into the reproductive morpho-physiology in batch spawners, the objective of this research was to analyze the dynamics of the follicular development, with its hormonal regulation between two active reproduction events. We found that over 16 days, follicles progressed asynchronously to chromatin nucleolus, Primary and Secondary growth stages of oogenesis with progressive secretion of 17ß-estradiol (E2). During the end of secondary growth, the increase in 17α,20ß-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17,20ß-p) was measured relative to the maturation process of the ovarian follicles (e.g., nuclear migration and its rupture during the resumption of meiosis). Interestingly, an additional increase in E2 was observed after fish reproduction, probably related to the recruitment of new batch follicles for secondary growth. We also measured the high values of multiple condition factor post-reproduction measurements, reflecting more energy invested during the pre-reproductive process. We also quantified high concentrations of 17,20ß-p, probably related to the recruitment of a new batch of oogonia to meiosis, presumably secreted by post-ovulatory follicles, after fish reproduction. We finally found that fish without exposure to reproductive stimulus developed a regression phase at day 24, characterized by massive follicle atresia, that allow them to recycle energy and constitutive materials of the follicles invested during oogenesis for another reproductive cycle.

Galls are plant neoformations induced by specialized parasites. Since gall inducers rely on reactive plant sites for gall development, variations in abiotic factors that affect plant phenology are expected to impact the life cycle of gall inducers. To test the hypothesis that different light conditions affect both host plant and gall inducer life cycles, we studied the system Eugenia uniflora (Myrtaceae) - Clinodiplosis profusa (Cecidomyiidae), comparing plants occurring in sunny and shaded environments. We mapped phenological differences among individuals of E. uniflora occurring in the two environments and related them to the influence of luminosity on the life cycle of the gall inducer. Shade plants showed lower intensity of leaf sprouting throughout the year compared to sun-exposed plants, especially during the rainy season. Young and mature galls are synchronized with the peak of leaf sprouting at the beginning of the rainy season, lasting longer in sun-exposed plants - approximately two months longer compared to shade plants. The greater light intensity positively impacts the formation and growth of leaves and galls, with an extended period available for their induction and growth. Thus, light is an important factor for the development of gallers, considering that variations in luminosity influenced not only the phenology of the host plant, but also determined the life cycle of gall inducers. Furthermore, changes in plant-environment interactions are expected to affect the life cycle and richness of other host plant-gall inducer systems.

Aging invariably decreases sensory and motor stimuli and affects several neuronal systems and their connectivity to key brain regions, including those involved in breathing. Nevertheless, further investigation is needed to fully comprehend the link between senescence and respiratory function. Here, we investigate whether a mouse model of accelerated senescence could develop central and peripheral respiratory abnormalities. Adult male Senescence Accelerated Mouse Prone 8 (SAMP8) and the control SAMR1 mice (10 months old) were used. Ventilatory parameters were assessed by whole-body plethysmography, and measurements of respiratory input impedance were performed. SAMP8 mice exhibited a reduction in the density of neurokinin-1 receptor immunoreactivity in the entire ventral respiratory column. Physiological experiments showed that SAMP8 mice exhibited a decreased tachypneic response to hypoxia (FiO2 = 0.08; 10 min) or hypercapnia (FiCO2 = 0.07; 10 min). Additionally, the ventilatory response to hypercapnia increased further due to higher tidal volume. Measurements of respiratory mechanics in SAMP8 mice showed decreased static compliance (Cstat), inspiratory capacity (IC), resistance (Rn), and elastance (H) at different ages (3, 6, and 10 months old). SAMP8 mice also have a decrease in contractile response to methacholine compared to SAMR1. In conclusion, our findings indicate that SAMP8 mice display a loss of the NK1-expressing neurons in the respiratory brainstem centers, along with impairments in both central and peripheral respiratory mechanisms. These observations suggest a potential impact on breathing in a senescence animal model.

The study aimed to understand the feeding behavior of Neotropical brown stink bug nymphs Euschistus heros (F.) on soybean plants during vegetative stage through electropenetrography (EPG) technique. Three distinct phases were identified: non-feeding, pathway, and ingestion. Waveforms representing these phases were consistent across nymphal instars and plant structures, and named Np, Eh1, and Eh2, respectively. Biological interpretations of the waveforms were proposed by integrating visual observations, comparisons with adult waveforms, and histological studies. The waveforms Np, Eh1, and Eh2 were associated with resting/walking, initial stylet-plant contact, and xylem sap ingestion, respectively. Notably, nymphs showed a higher number of Eh1 events and longer durations when feeding on petioles compared to leaves, particularly in younger instars. However, differences between instars diminished in older nymphs. Fifth instars consistently exhibited the highest Eh1 values, and displayed longer xylem ingestion durations compared to other instars. Second instars demonstrated increased xylem ingestion events on petioles compared to leaves. Across plant structures, on petioles, nymphs generally showed longer xylem ingestion durations than on leaf surfaces. Fifth instar consistently had the longest ingestion durations overall. Additionally, statistical differences in xylem ingestion duration were observed between instars within each plant structure, with fifth instars displaying the longest durations. These findings offer valuable insights into the feeding behavior of E. heros nymphs, which could inform the development of more effective pest management strategies for soybean crops.

There is limited knowledge about tick diversity in the Amazon region. Here, we survey small terrestrial mammals for tick infestation at the Rio Pardo settlement, Amazonas State, Brazil. Sampling included rainy and dry seasons and four ecotones (primary forest, forest in regeneration, field crops and households). Each animal was inspected for ticks, which, if present, were placed in 70% alcohol and identified. Parasitological indexes were calculated and the presence/absence of ticks on hosts was tested for possible associations with independent variables (ecotone, host sex, host order, host family, host age and season). A total of 208 small mammals were captured, 47 individuals (10 species) in the primary forest, 124 (15 species) in the forest in regeneration, 11 (7 species) in the field crops, and 26 (4 species) in the households. A total of 14 small mammals were infested by ticks (overall prevalence: 6.7%; 95% CI: 3.72 - 11.04%), which consisted of 51 specimens that were identified into four species, as follows: Amblyomma humerale (32 nymphs); Ixodes luciae (6 females); Amblyomma coelebs (1 nymph); and Ornithodoros mimon (1 larva). In addition, 11 larvae were retained as Amblyomma spp. Only host order showed association (P = 0.002) with tick infestation, with marsupials 5.5 times more infested than rodents. Our record of O. mimon on D. marsupialis is the first on this host species, and the first record of a Argasidae tick in the Brazilian state of Amazonas. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that actively screened free-living terrestrial small mammals and provided data on prevalence, mean intensity and mean abundance of tick infestations in the Brazilian Amazonas state.

Considering that the retrotrapezoid nucleus/respiratory parafacial region (RTN/pFRG) would be an important center in the central nervous system involved in the maintenance and modulation of respiratory activity, we hypothesized that neurons in this nucleus would also be involved in the postinspiratory (post-I) phase of the respiratory cycle through a connection with the pontine Kölliker-Fuse (KF) region. Here, we performed pharmacogenetic manipulation (AAV-hM3D(Gq)-mCherry or AAV-hM4D(Gi)-mCherry) in VGlut2-cre, Ai6 conscious mice to evaluate breathing parameters through whole body plethysmography under baseline conditions (normoxia: [Formula: see text] = 0.21) or under hypercapnia or hypoxia challenges ([Formula: see text] = 0.07 or [Formula: see text] = 0.08). Under normoxia, selective stimulation of RTN/pFRG resulted in a smaller increase in V̇e (1,272 ± 102.5, vs. RTN/pFRG stimulation: 1,878 ± 122.1 mL/kg/min), due to a smaller increase in VT (5.4 ± 0.35, vs. RTN/pFRG stimulation: 7.77 ± 0.21 mL/kg) without changing fR in a condition of KF inhibition. However, inhibition of the VGlut2 neurons in the KF did affect the TE1 produced by selective activation of RTN/pFRG (119.9 ± 2.53, vs. RTN/pFRG stimulation: 104 ± 2.46 ms). Both the hypercapnia and hypoxia ventilatory response were reduced after inhibition of VGlut2-expressing KF neurons. Therefore, consistent with anatomical projections RTN/pFRG neurons regulate lung ventilation by controlling all aspects of breathing, i.e., breathing frequency, inspiration, postinspiration, and active expiration. All the modulation seems to be dependent on the integrity of the glutamatergic neurons in the KF region.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Our research reveals specific roles and interactions between the retrotrapezoid nucleus/respiratory parafacial region (RTN/pFRG) and the pontine Kölliker-Fuse (KF) region in controlling respiratory phases. RTN/pFRG neurons are key in regulating all aspects of breathing, including frequency, inspiration, postinspiration, and active expiration. This regulation depends on the functional integrity of glutamatergic neurons in the KF region, aligning with anatomical projections.

In this sense, popular belief-driven posts recommending the use of amber necklaces to prevent symptoms of teething can be easily found on social media, even when they offer health risks for children. Accordingly, this study aimed to characterize posts in Portuguese by identifying message-based factors associated with higher user interactions of Facebook. A total of 500 Facebook posts published in Portuguese between August 2016 and August 2021 were retrieved by CrowdTangle, and analyzed quantitatively according to time of publication, total user interaction, and post overperforming score, and then qualitatively by two independent investigators, according to motivation, authors' profiles, and sentiment. The data were evaluated by descriptive analysis, Mann-Whitney U test, chi-square test, and multiple logistic regression models regarding interaction metrics. The posts were published predominantly by commercial profiles, with social, psychological, and financial motivations, and expressed positive sentiment. Furthermore, time of publication (OR=2.65), regular user profiles (OR=3.30), and neutral/negative sentiment (OR=2.76) were associated positively with total interactions, whereas only time of publication was associated with post overperforming scores (OR=1.65). In conclusion, Facebook posts promoting efficacy of amber necklaces in managing teething symptoms are primarily created by commercial profiles with vested interests in marketing the product. The key factors that contribute to the success of posts containing false information about amber necklaces on Facebook can be identified by considering the author's profile, sentiment, and time of publication.

Neonatal immune activation (NIA) through exposure to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induces adult behavioral changes in rodents that resemble symptoms of developmental disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder. The neonatal timing of LPS exposure appears to play a crucial role in determining the nature and extent of long-term changes. This study aims to explore whether a 3-day LPS-NIA triggers sex- and age-related changes in gut function, potentially linking LPS-NIA to gastrointestinal dysfunction. Male and female Swiss mice received intraperitoneal injections of LPS or saline on postnatal days (PN) 3, 5, and 7. At PN35 (juvenile) and PN70 (adult), gut inflammation and oxidative stress were evaluated in addition to assessments of working memory, depressive-like symptoms, sociability, and repetitive behavior. Gut examination showed elevated C-X-C motif chemokine receptor 3 (CXCR3) in LPS-NIA mice, while MyD88 and Zonulin expressions were significantly higher only in adult LPS-NIA females. Interleukin (IL)-23 expression increased in juvenile and adult male and juvenile female LPS-NIA mice. Oxidative changes included decreased duodenal reduced glutathione (GSH) in juvenile females and ileal GSH in adult females exposed to LPS-NIA. Regarding behavioral alterations, adult LPS-NIA females exhibited depressive-like behavior. Working memory deficits were observed across all LPS-NIA groups. Only juvenile LPS-NIA females increased grooming, while rearing was higher in adult LPS-NIA mice of both sexes. The findings imply that LPS-NIA impacts intestinal barrier function and causes gut inflammatory alterations that are sex- and age-specific. These findings pave the way for exploring potential mechanisms that could contribute to LPS-induced gastrointestinal disturbances among individuals with ASD.

Fipronil, a pesticide widely used to control agricultural and household insect pests, blocks insect GABAA and glutamate (GluCl) ionotropic receptors, resulting in uncontrolled hyperexcitation and paralysis that eventually leads to death. The use of fipronil is controversial because unintentional exposure to this compound may contribute to the ongoing global decline of insect pollinator populations. Although the sublethal effects of fipronil have been linked to aberrant behavior and impaired olfactory learning in insects, the precise mechanisms involved in these responses remain unclear. In this article, we highlight recent studies that have investigated the interaction among different pathways involved in the ability of fipronil to modulate insect behavior, with particular emphasis on the role of GABAergic neurotransmission in fine-tuning the integration of sensorial responses and insect behavior. Recent findings suggest that fipronil can also cause functional alterations that affect synaptic organization and the availability of metal ions in the brain.

Inoculation of Azospirillum in maize has become a standard practice in Latin America. However, information on the behavior and population survival of the Azospirillum post-inoculation is scarce, making standardization difficult and generating variations in inoculation efficiency across assays. In this study, we tracked the colonization of three agriculturally relevant Azospirillum strains (Ab-V5, Az39, and the ammonium excreting HM053) after different inoculation methods in maize crops by qPCR. Besides, we assessed their ability to promote maize growth by measuring biometric parameters after conducting a greenhouse essay over 42 days. Inoculated plants exhibited Azospirillum population ranging from 103 to 107 cells plant-1 throughout the experiment. While all strains efficiently colonized roots, only A. argentinense Az39 demonstrated bidirectional translocation between roots and shoots, which characterizes a systemic behavior. Optimal inoculation methods for plant growth promotion varied among strains: soil inoculation promoted the best maize growth for the Ab-V5 and Az39 strains, while seed inoculation proved most effective for HM053. The findings of this study demonstrate that the inoculation method affects the behavior of Azospirillum strains and their effectiveness in promoting maize growth, thereby guiding practices to enhance crop yield.

As the most abundant pollinator insect in crops, Apis mellifera is a sentinel species of the pollinator communities. In these ecosystems, honey bees of different ages and developmental stages are exposed to diverse agrochemicals. However, most toxicological studies analyse the immediate effects during exposure. Late effects during adulthood after early exposure to pollutants during larval development are poorly studied in bees. The herbicide glyphosate (GLY) is the most applied pesticide worldwide. GLY has been detected in honey and beebread from hives near treated crops. Alterations in growth, morphogenesis or organogenesis during pre-imaginal development could induce late adverse effects after the emergence. Previous studies have demonstrated that GLY alters honey bee development, immediately affecting survival, growth and metabolism, followed by late teratogenic effects. The present study aims to determine the late impact on the behaviour and physiology of adult bees after pre-imaginal exposure to GLY. For that, we reared brood in vitro or in the hive with sub-chronic exposure to the herbicide with the average detected concentration in hives. Then, all newly emerged bees were reared in an incubator until maturity and tested when they became nurse-aged bees. Three behavioural responses were assessed as markers of cognitive and physiological impairment. Our results show i) decreased sensitivity to sucrose regardless of the rearing procedure, ii) increased choice latency and locomotor alterations during chemotaxis and iii) impaired associative learning. These late toxicity signs could indicate adverse effects on task performance and colony efficiency.

Reciprocal inhibition and coactivation are strategies of the central nervous system used to perform various daily tasks. In automatic postural responses (APR), coactivation is widely investigated in the ankle joint muscles, however reciprocal inhibition, although clear in manipulative motor actions, has not been investigated in the context of APRs. The aim was to identify whether reciprocal inhibition can be observed as a strategy in the recruitment of gastrocnemius Medialis (GM), Soleus (So) and Tibialis Anterior (TA) muscles in low- and high-velocity forward and backward perturbations. We applied two balance perturbations with a low and a high velocity of displacement of the movable platform in forward and backward conditions and we evaluated the magnitude and latency time of TA, GM and So activation latency, measured by electromyography (EMG). In forward perturbations, coactivation of the three muscles was observed, with greater activation amplitude of the GM and lesser amplitude of the So and TA muscles. For backward, the pattern of response observed was activation of the TA muscle, a decrease in the EMG signal, which characterizes reciprocal inhibition of the GM muscle and maintenance of the basal state of the So muscle. This result indicates that backward perturbations are more challenging.

BACKGROUND: Patients with severe coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) may require the use of invasive mechanical ventilation (MV) for prolonged periods. Aggressive MV parameters have been associated with changes in intracranial pressure (ICP) in patients with acute intracranial disorders. Significant ICP elevation could compromise intracranial compliance (ICC) and cerebrovascular hemodynamics (CVH). However, the effects of these parameters in individuals without neurological disorders have not yet been evaluated. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate ICC in patients on MV with COVID-19 infection compared to other diagnoses, to better characterize the effects of MV and COVID-19 upon ICC. We also compared between the ICC in patients with COVID-19 who did not require MV and healthy volunteers, to assess the isolated effect of COVID-19 upon ICC. METHODS: This was an exploratory, observational study with a convenience sample. The ICC was evaluated with a noninvasive ICP monitoring device. The P2/P1 ratio was calculated by dividing the amplitude of these two points, being defined as "abnormal" when P2 > P1. The statistical analysis was performed using a mixed linear model with random effects to compare the P2/P1 ratio in all four groups on the first monitoring day. RESULTS: A convenience sample of 78 subjects (15 MV-COVID-19, 15 MV non-COVID-19, 24 non-MV-COVID-19, and 24 healthy participants) was prospectively enrolled. There was no difference in P2/P1 ratios between MV patients with and without COVID-19, nor between non-MV patients with COVID-19 and healthy volunteers. However, the P2/P1 ratio was higher in COVID-19 patients with MV use than in those without it. CONCLUSION: This exploratory analysis suggests that COVID-19 does not impair ICC.


ANTECEDENTES: Pacientes com doença grave por coronavírus-19 (COVID-19) podem necessitar do uso de ventilação mecânica (VM) invasiva por um período prolongado. Parâmetros agressivos de VM têm sido associados a alterações na pressão intracraniana (PIC) em pacientes com doenças intracranianas agudas. Elevações significativas da PIC podem comprometer a complacência intracraniana (CIC) e a hemodinâmica cerebrovascular (HVC). No entanto, os efeitos desses parâmetros em indivíduos sem doenças neurológicas ainda não foram sistematicamente avaliados. OBJETIVO: Avaliar a CIC em pacientes em VM com COVID-19 comparados com outros diagnósticos, para melhor caracterizar os efeitos da VM e COVID-19 sobre a CIC. Também foi feita a comparação entre a CIC em pacientes com COVID-19 sem VM e voluntários saudáveis, para avaliar o efeito isolado da COVID-19 sobre a ICC. MéTODOS: Trata-se de um estudo exploratório, observacional com amostra por conveniência. A CIC foi avaliada com um dispositivo não invasivo de monitoramento da PIC. A relação P2/P1 foi calculada dividindo-se a amplitude desses dois pontos, sendo definida como "anormal" quando P2 > P1. A análise estatística foi realizada usando um modelo linear misto com efeitos aleatórios para comparar a relação P2/P1 nos quatro grupos no primeiro dia de monitoramento. RESULTADOS: Uma amostra de conveniência com 78 voluntários (15 COVID-19 em VM, 15 sem COVID-19 em VM, 24 com COVID em respiração espontânea e 24 saudáveis) foram prospectivamente incluídos. Não houve diferença nas razões P2/P1 entre pacientes em VM com e sem COVID-19, nem entre pacientes sem VM com COVID-19 ou saudáveis. No entanto, a relação P2/P1 foi maior em pacientes com COVID-19 com uso de VM do que naqueles sem. CONCLUSãO: Os dados dessa análise exploratória sugerem que a COVID-19 não prejudica a CIC.

Varicocele can reduce male fertility potential through various oxidative stress mechanisms. Excessive production of reactive oxygen species may overwhelm the sperm's defenses against oxidative stress, damaging the sperm chromatin. Sperm DNA fragmentation, in the form of DNA strand breaks, is recognized as a consequence of the oxidative stress cascade and is commonly found in the ejaculates of men with varicocele and fertility issues. This paper reviews the current knowledge regarding the association between varicocele, oxidative stress, sperm DNA fragmentation, and male infertility, and examines the role of varicocele repair in alleviating oxidative-sperm DNA fragmentation in these patients. Additionally, we highlight areas for further research to address knowledge gaps relevant to clinical practice.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the cardiovascular risk and physical fitness, according to type of school in a national sample of Chilean school students. METHODS: A total of 7,218 students participated, who completed all the national tests of the National System for Measuring the Quality of Education, which included physical fitness and anthropometric tests. The results were compared according to the type of educational establishment and anthropometric indicators were considered. Physical fitness was measured by lower extremity strength, abdominal strength, upper extremity strength, trunk flexibility, exertional heart rate, and cardiorespiratory fitness. Body mass index, heart rate, and waist-to-height ratio were analyzed as predictors of cardiovascular risk. RESULTS: There were differences according to the type of establishment in the predictors of cardiovascular risk (p < 0.05). Differences were also found in the physical fitness tests evaluated (p < 0.01). Students in private schools (PSC) and subsidized schools (SC) had lower levels of cardiovascular risk and higher levels of physical fitness than public schools (PS) and schools with delegated administration (DA). CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, students in educational establishments with a higher socioeconomic level have lower levels of cardiovascular risk and better physical fitness than students in public establishments. The authors suggest considering specific school interventions to mitigate cardiovascular risk and improve physical fitness among this vulnerable population. To this end, future studies should analyze the characteristics of physical activity and nutritional habits in schools to determine the factors that affect the results.

There is evidence that astrocytes modulate synaptic transmission in the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS) interacting with glutamatergic and purinergic mechanisms. Here, using in situ working heart-brainstem preparations, we evaluated the involvement of astrocyte and glutamatergic/purinergic neurotransmission in the processing of autonomic and respiratory pathways in the NTS of control and rats exposed to sustained hypoxia (SH). Baseline autonomic and respiratory activities and the responses to chemoreflex activation (KCN) were evaluated before and after microinjections of fluorocitrate (FCt, an astrocyte metabolic inhibitor), kynurenic acid, and pyridoxalphosphate-6-azophenyl-2',4'-disulfonate (PPADS) (nonselective antagonists of glutamatergic and purinergic receptors) into the rostral aspect of the caudal commissural NTS. FCt had no effects on the baseline parameters evaluated but reduced the bradycardic response to chemoreflex activation in SH rats. FCt combined with kynurenic acid and PPADS in control rats reduced the baseline duration of expiration, which was attenuated after SH. FCt produced a large increase in PN frequency discharge in control rats, which was reduced after SH, indicating a reduction in the astrocyte modulation after SH. The data show that 1) the bradycardic component of the peripheral chemoreflex is reduced in SH rats after astrocytes inhibition, 2) the inhibition of astrocytes in the presence of double antagonists in the NTS affects the modulation of baseline duration of expiration in control but not in SH rats, and 3) the autonomic and respiratory responses to chemoreflex activation are mediated by glutamatergic and purinergic receptors in the rostral aspect of the caudal commissural NTS.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Our findings indicate that the neurotransmission of autonomic and respiratory components of the peripheral chemoreflex in the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS) is mediated by glutamatergic and purinergic mechanisms and reveal a selective involvement of NTS astrocytes in controlling the chemoreflex parasympathetic response in rats exposed to sustained hypoxia (SH) and the baseline duration of expiration mainly in control rats, indicating a selective role for astrocytes modulation in the NTS of control and SH rats.
