Introducción: Las lesiones deportivas generan una serie de complicaciones que limitan la vida útil del deportista. El deporte de alto rendimiento constituye una agresión al organismo, incrementando la frecuencia de aparición de lesiones. Sin embargo, se puede conseguir la disminución de estas mediante el trabajo fisioprofiláctico por parte de los entrenadores de cada deporte. Objetivo: Diseñar una estrategia de superación para mejorar del desempeño profesional de los entrenadores para la prevención de lesiones en el kárate-do. Materiales y métodos: El estudio se clasificó como de investigación-acción, de tipo cualitativo. Se realizó entre enero y septiembre de 2023, y se trabajó con 15 entrenadores de kárate-do. Se utilizaron métodos teóricos y empíricos. Resultados: Se diseñó una estrategia de superación en cuatro etapas: acercamiento y diagnóstico, planeación, implementación y evaluación. Conclusiones: La fundamentación de la estrategia de superación permite establecer relaciones esenciales que aportan a la teoría en esta área del conocimiento. La estructura de la estrategia propuesta está en correspondencia con los fundamentos asumidos y contribuye a orientar a los entrenadores de kárate-do para prevenir lesiones en este deporte.


Introduction: Sports injuries generate a series of complications that limit the useful life of the athlete. High-performance sports constitute an attack on the body, increasing the frequency of injure occurrence. However, a reduction in these can be achieved through physioprophylactic work by the coaches of each sport. Objective: To design an upgrading strategy to improve the professional performance of coaches for injury prevention in karate-do. Materials and methods: The study was classified as research-action, qualitative type. It was carried out between January and September 2023, and was performed with 15 karate-do trainers. Theoretical and empirical methods were used. Results: A four-stages upgrading strategy was designed: approach and diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation. Conclusions: The foundation of the upgrading strategy allows establishing essential relationships that contribute to the theory in this area of knowledge. The structure of the proposed strategy is in correspondence with the assumed fundamentals and contributes to guiding karate-do coaches to prevent injuries in this sport.

La Medicina Natural y Tradicional aplica sus diferentes modalidades en la práctica médica moderna, segura, económica, inocua y simple; y con pocos efectos colaterales resuelve grandes problemas de salud en situaciones especiales o de desastres con recursos limitados. De ahí que el egresado de programas de especialización de las ciencias médicas cuenta con sólidos conocimientos para su aplicación, especialmente en las afecciones osteomioarticulares, donde la especialidad de ortopedia y traumatología tiene un papel primordial para identificar las causas y consecuencias de la insuficiencia de su aplicación en pacientes portadores de afecciones relacionadas con esta especialidad. A través de un estudio crítico reflexivo basado en el análisis y la síntesis, así como de la constatación de la validez de los puntos de vista asumidos como referentes en el proceso de superación del especialista de ortopedia y traumatología, se pudo mostrar cómo se ha concebido la superación profesional en el Hospital General Dr. Juan Bruno Zayas Alfonso, al integrar adecuadamente los conocimientos y las competencias. Esto se expresó en la elaboración e implementación de una estrategia de superación profesional, que permitió la actualización de relevantes conocimientos necesarios en el campo de la MNT para el desempeño de este profesional. Se concluyó que era insuficiente el nivel de conocimiento de los contenidos, como también los cursos ofertados para su desarrollo, lo que trajo como consecuencia una atención médica sin calidad(AU)


Natural and traditional medicine applies its different modalities in modern, safe, economical, innocuous and simple medical practice; with few collateral effects, it solves major health problems in special or disaster situations with limited resources. Hence, the graduate of specialization programs in medical sciences possesses solid knowledge for its application, especially in osteomyoarticular conditions, in which the specialty of orthopedics and traumatology has a key role in identifying the causes and consequences of its unsatisfactory application in patients with conditions related to this specialty. Through a reflexive and critical study based on analysis and synthesis, as well as the verification of the validity of the viewpoints assumed as referents in the process of improvement of the orthopedics and traumatology specialist, it was possible to show how professional improvement has been conceived at Hospital General Dr. Juan Bruno Zayas Alfonso, by adequately integrating knowledge and competences. This was expressed through the elaboration and implementation of a professional improvement strategy, which allowed updating relevant knowledge necessary in the field of natural and traditional medicine for the performance of this professional. The level of knowledge about the contents was concluded to be insufficient, while the courses offered for its development were so, which resulted in a medical care without quality(AU)

En la actualidad, se vive en una sociedad en la que el conocimiento es el principal motor de desarrollo y crecimiento económico. Para que una persona tenga capacidad de producir conocimientos y de aprendizaje permanente, se requiere tener habilidades en el uso de tecnología avanzada, las cuales se logran con la superación profesional para poder aplicarlos en beneficio de toda la sociedad. La superación profesional posibilita a los profesionales estar actualizados y actualizables en las tecnologías avanzadas que facilitan mantenerse competentes y competitivos en cualquiera de los escenarios. En ese sentido, el desarrollo de las habilidades en el uso de tecnología avanzada significa aprender un lenguaje único, incorporar nuevas reglas y utilizar nuevas experiencias para aprender a interaccionar con eficacia en ese mundo. La tecnología de la salud requiere de profesionales con un perfil amplio e integrador, los cuales, mediante la superación profesional, se apropien de conocimientos y desarrollen habilidades en el uso de tecnología avanzada(AU)


Nowadays, life is experienced in a society in which knowledge is the main engine of development and economic growth. In order for a person to have the capacity to produce knowledge and learn permanently, it is necessary to have skills in the use of advanced technology, achieved through professional upgrading in order to apply them for the benefit of society as a whole. Professional upgrading makes it possible for professionals to be updated and updatable in advanced technologies that make it easier for them to remain competent and competitive in any of the scenarios. RESUMO

El perfeccionamiento de los tres procesos sustantivos de la universidad, la docencia, la investigación y la extensión universitaria ha sido una prioridad para la educación superior cubana que ha desarrollado una serie de cambios y transformaciones en aras de garantizar una excelente formación de los profesionales que egresan de ella. En este sentido, la investigación abordó el tema de la extensión universitaria en la superación profesional y tuvo como objetivo favorecer la superación de los docentes universitarios y su vinculación con los avances científicos en un curso de posgrado para la Licenciatura en Cultura Física y Deportes, desde la extensión universitaria. El proceso investigativo se rigió por el método dialectico-materialista y se emplearon métodos del nivel teórico como el histórico-lógico y el análisis-síntesis y del nivel empírico el análisis documental, la entrevista en profundidad y la encuesta, para interpretar los resultados obtenidos en cada etapa de la investigación. Los resultados mostraron como principales debilidades el insuficiente reconocimiento de la importancia de la extensión universitaria en el contexto docente, así como la poca producción científica relacionada con la temática. Del estudio realizado se concluye que la extensión universitaria en la superación de este profesional constituye una vía expedita para un mejor conocimiento, gestión, preservación y difusión de actividades intra- y extracurriculares y en la mejora de la calidad de vida, con el fin de contribuir a formar ciudadanos capaces de ser, conocer, hacer y convivir juntos.


A melhoria dos três processos substantivos da universidade, o ensino, a pesquisa e a extensão universitária, tem sido uma prioridade para o ensino superior cubano, que tem desenvolvido uma série de mudanças e transformações a fim de garantir uma excelente formação dos profissionais que nela se graduam. Nesse sentido, a pesquisa abordou a questão da extensão universitária no desenvolvimento profissional e seu objetivo foi promover o desenvolvimento dos professores universitários e sua vinculação com os avanços científicos em um curso de pós-graduação para o Bacharelado em Cultura Física e Esportes, a partir da perspectiva da extensão universitária. O processo de pesquisa foi regido pelo método dialético-materialista, utilizando métodos teóricos como o histórico-lógico e a análise-síntese e métodos empíricos como a análise documental, a entrevista em profundidade e o survey, para interpretar os resultados obtidos em cada etapa da pesquisa. Os resultados apontaram como principais fragilidades o insuficiente reconhecimento da importância da extensão universitária no contexto do ensino, bem como a pouca produção científica relacionada ao tema. A partir do estudo realizado, conclui-se que a extensão universitária no aprimoramento desse profissional constitui um caminho expedito para um melhor conhecimento, gerenciamento, preservação e divulgação das atividades intra e extracurriculares e na melhoria da qualidade de vida, com o objetivo de contribuir para formar cidadãos capazes de ser, saber, fazer e conviver.


The improvement of the three substantive processes of the university, teaching, research and university extension has been a priority for Cuban higher education that has developed a series of changes and transformations in order to guarantee an excellent training of the professionals who graduate from it. In this sense, the research addressed the issue of university extension in professional upgrading and had the objective of promoting the improvement of university teachers and their link with scientific advances in a postgraduate course for the Degree in Physical Culture and Sports, from the university extension. The research process was governed by the dialectical-materialist method; theoretical level methods such as historical-logical and analysis-synthesis and empirical level ones as documentary analysis, in-depth interview and survey were used to interpret the results obtained in each stage of the research. The results showed as main weaknesses the insufficient recognition of the importance of university extension in the teaching context, as well as the little scientific production related to the subject. From the study carried out, it is concluded that the university extension in the improvement of this professional constitutes an expeditious way for a better knowledge, management, preservation and dissemination of intra- and extracurricular activities and in the improvement of the quality of life, in order to contribute to form citizens capable of being, knowing, doing and living together.

The objective of this study is to compare the environmental and social performance of two small-scale avocado biorefineries implanted in a rural zone in the North of Colombia. Two small-scale biorefineries were proposed. Small-B1 addressed to produce avocado oil and animal feed, and Small-B2 focused on the guacamole production. The environmental analysis was done by applying the life cycle assessment methodology. Then, agronomic information and process simulation were required to complete the analysis. Moreover, the water footprint of the avocado crops was estimated. Both biorefineries were compared with the direct avocados production and commercialization. The social assessment was achieved by the estimation of quantitative indicators related to wages, jobs, and working hours. The agricultural carbon and water footprints of the creole avocado crop were 0.59 kg CO2-eq/kg and 2.13 m3/kg. In the same way, Small-B1 and Small-B2 obtained a carbon and water footprints of 8.99 kg CO2-eq/kg and 6.63 m3/kg and 0.72 kg CO2-eq/kg and 1.38 m3/kg, respectively. The hotspots of the creole avocado crop are related to the use of fertilizers and fungicides. Then, new strategies should be implemented to reduce the farmer's dependency. The social analysis exhibit a high resilience of the Small-B1 biorefinery since a salary increase to worker about 50% can be proposed. In addition, the installation of this biorefinery can create more than ten jobs. A disjunction was found between the economic, environmental, and social analyses. Thus, the need to establish a multidimensional strategy to design sustainable biorefineries is presented.

La enseñanza de las ciencias básicas en las universidades médicas constituye una prioridad para la formación del profesional de la salud, porque ofrece los fundamentos teóricos que propician la comprensión de la morfofisiología del organismo humano, sus interdependencias y sus relaciones con el medio en que nace, crece, se desarrolla y muere. En tal sentido, se deriva la necesidad de mantener la superación de los docentes para el perfeccionamiento de la dirección del proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje desde los primeros años de la carrera de medicina y en esta investigación, en particular, en el uso del dibujo de imágenes microscópicas para la enseñanza de estos conocimientos en la disciplina Bases Biológicas de la Medicina. El objetivo del artículo fue caracterizar la superación pedagógica de los profesores de Histología en la Universidad de Ciencias Médicas de Matanzas. Se realizó una revisión bibliográfica de artículos que abordaban esta temática, así como de documentos normativos para la formación de los docentes en esta área pedagógica. Se identificaron tres momentos que caracterizaban la trayectoria de la superación pedagógica de los profesores de las ciencias biomédicas; en particular, el papel del dibujo de imágenes microscópicas como medio de enseñanza en ese proceso. Se consideró que no se dedicaba tiempo en los programas a su desarrollo, por lo que se deriva la necesidad de la superación profesoral y el perfeccionamiento de la didáctica de esta disciplina(AU)


The teaching of basic sciences in medical universities is a priority for the training of health professionals, because it provides the theoretical foundations that promote the understanding of the morphophysiology of the human organism, its interdependencies and its relationship with the environment in which it is born, grows, develops and dies. In this respect, it is necessary to maintain the upgrading of professors in view of improving the guidance of the teaching-learning process from the first academic years of the medical major and, particularly in this research, through the use of drawn microscopic images for the teaching of this knowledge in the discipline Biological Basis of Medicine. The objective of the article was to characterize the pedagogical upgrading of Histology professors at the University of Medical Sciences of Matanzas. A bibliographic review of articles dealing with this topic was carried out, as well as of normative documents for the training of professors in this pedagogical area. Three moments were identified that characterized the pathway of the pedagogical upgrading of biomedical sciences professors, particularly the role of drawn microscopic images as a teaching aid in this process. The programs were not considered to devote any time to its development, thus the need appearing for the upgrading of professors and the improvement of the didactics of this discipline(AU)

Introducción: La superación profesional en cirujanos generales, particularizada en la atención preoperatoria, es una vía para acrecentar la educación permanente o continua, que contribuye a formar hombres de ciencias con determinados valores y actitudes. Objetivo: Diseñar una estrategia de superación para el desarrollo de las habilidades profesionales en la atención preoperatoria mediata que contribuya al mejoramiento del desempeño profesional de los médicos cirujanos generales. Métodos: Se utilizaron como métodos teóricos: análisis-síntesis, histórico-lógico, sistematización, inducción-deducción, modelación, análisis documental, sistémico estructural funcional; y como empírico, la observación científica. Resultados: El diseño de la estrategia respondió al desarrollo de las habilidades profesionales en la atención preoperatoria mediata y se fundamentó desde los referentes filosóficos, sociológicos, psicológicos, epistemológicos, pedagógicos y la educación médica. Se concibió en cuatro etapas y se utilizó el ciclo Deming, que establece relaciones esenciales con coherencia lógica interna a la educación médica, en particular en el área de la formación permanente y continuada de los profesionales de la salud. Conclusiones: El diseño de la estrategia profesional permite el enriquecimiento de las ciencias de la educación médica desde el posgrado como ciencia en construcción, específicamente en el área de la formación permanente y continua de médicos cirujanos generales. Al profundizar desde el plano interno, externo y contextual para el desarrollo de las habilidades profesionales en el preoperatorio mediato, la estrategia propuesta resulta dinámica, lo que permite el mejoramiento del desempeño profesional a partir de la superación(AU)


Introduction: Professional improvement in general surgeons, particularly in preoperative care, is a way to increase permanent or continuous education, which contributes to the creation of men of science with certain values and attitudes. Objective: To design an upgrading strategy for the development of professional skills in preoperative care that contributes to the improvement of professional performance in general surgeons. Methods: As theoretical methods, analysis-synthesis was used, together with the historical-logical method, systematization, induction-deduction, modeling, documentary analysis, and the structural-functional-systemic method; while, at the empirical level, scientific observation was used. Results: The design of the strategy responded to the development of professional skills in preoperative mediated care and was based on philosophical, sociological, psychological, epistemological, pedagogical and medical education referents. It was conceived in four stages and used the Deming cycle, which establishes essential relationships with internal logical coherence to medical education, particularly in the area of permanent and continuous education for health professionals. Conclusions: The design of the professional strategy allows the enrichment of medical education sciences from the postgraduate level as a science under construction, specifically in the area of permanent and continuous training of general surgeons. Insofar it deepens from the internal, external and contextual levels for the development of professional skills in the mediate preoperative period, the proposed strategy is dynamic, allowing for the improvement of professional performance from the point of view of self-upgrading(AU)

Introducción: El proceso de formación y superación de profesionales de las ciencias médicas para alcanzar el segundo grado de las especialidades constituye una prioridad y objetivo del MINSAP en el año 2021. Objetivo: Diseñar una estrategia de superación que prepare a los profesionales de las ciencias médicas para lograr el segundo grado de las especialidades en la atención primaria de salud del municipio Sagua la Grande. Métodos: Se realizó un estudio descriptivo transversal en la Facultad de Ciencias Médicas de Sagua la Grande durante el período comprendido entre 2019 y 2021. La población de estudio estuvo constituida por la totalidad de especialistas de primer grado médicos y estomatólogos de la Atención Primaria de Salud (247). La muestra fue seleccionada por un muestreo no probabilístico por criterios. La muestra quedó finalmente constituida por 173 profesionales. La información fue recogida a través de una encuesta, análisis documental y empleando la triangulación de fuentes. Resultados: De los profesionales de la atención primaria estudiados, 0,8 por ciento tenía título de especialista de segundo grado y 2,9 por ciento con los requisitos para optar por el segundo grado. Conclusiones: La estrategia de superación que prepare a los profesionales de las ciencias médicas para lograr el segundo grado contó de un conjunto de cursos y talleres que contribuirán a la superación de los profesionales en temas identificados como necesidades de aprendizaje. La totalidad de los expertos valoraron la estrategia como bastante adecuada(AU)


Introduction: The training and upgrading process for medical sciences professionals to achieve the second degree of their respective specialties is a priority and objective of the Ministry of Public Health in the year 2021. Objective: To design an upgrading strategy that provides training for medical sciences professionals to achieve the second degree of their respective specialties in primary healthcare in Sagua la Grande Municipality. Methods: A cross-sectional and descriptive study was carried out in the School of Medical Sciences of Sagua la Grande, during the period from 2019 to 2021. The study population consisted of all the first-degree medical and dental specialists from the primary healthcare sector (247). The sample was selected using nonprobabilistic sampling by criteria. The sample finally consisted of 173 professionals. The information was collected by means of a survey, documentary analysis and triangulation of sources. Results: 0.8 percent of the studied primary care professionals had a diploma of second-degree specialist, while 2.9 percent had the requirements to opt for the second degree. Conclusions: The upgrading strategy aimed at medical sciences professionals, in order for them to achieve the second degree in their respective specialties, included a set of courses and workshops that contributed to professional upgrading in topics identified as learning needs. All the experts assessed the strategy as quite adequate(AU)

Introducción: La atención a pacientes nefrogeriátricos requiere de nuevas acciones que propicien mejores resultados de forma armónica e integrada. Objetivo: Caracterizar el estado actual del desempeño profesional del médico de familia en nefrogeriatría en la Atención Primaria de Salud. Métodos: Estudio observacional, descriptivo y transversal, desde mayo de 2014 a mayo de 2015, dirigido a 39 médicos de familia del área 5 de septiembre. Se emplearon métodos teóricos, empíricos y estadísticos para evaluar el desempeño profesional del médico de familia en nefrogeriatría. Se tuvo en cuenta el consentimiento informado. Resultados: Se identificó el estado actual de la variable estudiada, con la identificación de problemas relacionados con la dimensión cognitiva, asistencial, educativa e investigativa en la atención al paciente nefrogeriátrico en la Atención Primaria de Salud. Conclusiones: El desempeño profesional del médico de familia en nefrogeriatría carece de integración en la atención integral a los pacientes, la familia y la comunidad(AU)


Introduction: The care for nephrogeriatric patients requires new actions with better outcomes in a harmonic and integrated way. Objective: To characterize the current state of professional performance of family physicians in nephrogeriatrics in primary healthcare. Methods: Observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study carried out from May 2014 to May 2015, targeted at 39 family physicians belonging to 5 de Septiembre health area. Theoretical, empirical and statistical methods were used to evaluate the professional performance of the family physician in nephrogeriatrics. Informed consent was taken into account. Results: The current state of the studied variable was identified, with the identification of problems related to the cognitive, assistance, educational and investigative dimensions in the care of nephrogeriatric patients in primary healthcare. Conclusions: The professional performance of the family physician in nephrogeriatrics lacks integration regarding the comprehensive care of patients, family and the community(AU)

Introducción: El enfermero que se desempeña como tutor en la Atención Primaria de Salud tiene como responsabilidad propiciar la formación integral del estudiante que tiene a su cargo. Objetivo: Diseñar una propuesta de superación para el perfeccionamiento de la labor del tutor de enfermería en la Atención Primaria de Salud. Métodos: Se efectuó una investigación de desarrollo en la Facultad de Ciencias Médicas Dr. Juan Guiteras Gener de Matanzas durante el curso escolar 2017 - 2018, con una muestra de 22 tutores de enfermería provenientes de la Atención Primaria de Salud del municipio de Matanzas. Se analizaron los documentos que avalan el trabajo metodológico de los metodólogos y directivos en la educación en el trabajo. Se diseñó una encuesta dirigida a tutores para la identificación de las necesidades de aprendizaje y una guía de observación a las actividades de educación en el trabajo en la Atención Primaria de Salud y entrevista a metodólogos y directivos, se seleccionaron 26 expertos para la valoración de la propuesta. Resultados: Con las encuestas aplicadas a los tutores y las observaciones efectuadas a las actividades en la educación en el trabajo se determinaron las necesidades de aprendizaje. Las entrevistas realizadas a los metodólogos y directivos corroboraron la necesidad de la propuesta. Conclusiones: Se diseñó una propuesta de superación para el perfeccionamiento de la labor del tutor de enfermería en la Atención Primaria de Salud que aborda las necesidades develadas. Los expertos valoraron la propuesta como adecuada, factible y aplicable(AU)


Introduction: The nurse who works as a tutor in primary healthcare has the responsibility of promoting the comprehensive formation of the student under her or his charge. Objective: To design a professional upgrading proposal for improving the work of the nursing tutor in primary healthcare. Methods: A developmental research was carried out at Dr. Juan Guiteras Gener School of Medical Sciences in Matanzas, during the 2017-2018 academic year, with a sample of 22 nursing tutors from primary healthcare from Matanzas Municipality. The documents supporting the methodological work of methodologists and managers of education at work were analyzed. A survey addressed to tutors was designed to identify the learning needs, as well as a guide for the observation of the activities of education at work in primary healthcare and an interview to be applied with methodologists and managers. Twenty-six experts were selected for the proposal evaluation. Results: The learning needs were determined with the surveys applied to the tutors and the observations made to the activities of education at work. The interviews conducted with methodologists and managers corroborated the need for the proposal. Conclusions: A professional upgrading proposal was designed for improving the work of the nursing tutor in primary healthcare, addressing the unveiled needs. The experts assessed the proposal as adequate, feasible and applicable(AU)

Introducción: La pandemia generada por la COVID-19 promovió que la superación profesional adquiriera nuevos matices. Las universidades fomentaron el uso de las tecnologías de la información y las comunicaciones, y el aprendizaje en los entornos virtuales. Objetivo: Exponer criterios sobre la virtualización de la superación profesional para el mejoramiento del desempeño pedagógico durante la COVID-19. Posicionamiento del autor: La situación generada por la COVID-19 exigió realizar el proceso de enseñanza aprendizaje en los entornos virtuales, por esta razón los profesores del Departamento de Ciencias Sociales asumieron este reto sin preparación previa. La superación profesional realizada en el Aula Virtual constituyó una vía eficaz para la aplicación de los recursos educativos virtuales. Conclusiones: La superación profesional en circunstancias sanitarias de emergencia se realizó en el Aula Virtual de la Escuela Latinoamericana de Medicina, donde se logró el mejoramiento del desempeño pedagógico de los docentes del Departamento de Ciencias Sociales(AU)


Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic caused professional upgrading to acquire new shades. Universities encouraged the use of information and communication technologies, as well as learning in virtual settings. Objective: To present criteria on the virtualization of professional upgrading for the improvement of pedagogical performance during COVID-19. Author's stance: The situation caused by COVID-19 demanded to carry out the teaching-learning process in virtual settings; therefore, the professors from the social sciences area took up this challenge without previous preparation. The professional upgrading process carried out in the virtual classroom proved to be an effective way for the application of virtual educational resources. Conclusions: Professional upgrading during public health circumstances of emergency was carried out in the virtual classroom of the Latin American School of Medicine, where pedagogical performance could be improved among the professors from the social sciences area(AU)

This research paper seeks to evaluate the influence of the context, processing scale, and portfolio of products on the economic performance of different avocado-based biorefineries. For this, two scenarios in small and large-scale biorefineries were compared. The case of scenario 1 (avocado oil, animal feed, and electricity production) was the best small-scale alternative to be implemented in rural zones than scenario 2 (guacamole and electricity production). The minimum Processing Scale for Economic Feasibility was 0.85 and 1.1 ton/day for scenarios 1 and 2. Compared to lactic acid and xylitol production, the large-scale process addressed to produce levulinic acid, furfural, and lignin (scenario 1) was the best option (scenario 2). In scenario 1, the minimum Processing Scale for Economic Feasibility was 15.50 ton/day compared with scenario 2 of 41.95 ton/day. Based on these values, scenario 1 has the highest feasibility of being implemented in countries such as Colombia.

The hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of acetophenone was evaluated in liquid phase and gas phase over monometallic Pt/SiO2, Co/SiO2 and bimetallic Pt-Co/SiO2 catalysts. The influence of reaction time and loading of the catalyst were analysed by following the conversion and products selectivity. Phenylethanol, cyclohexylethanone and cyclohexylethanol are the main products of reaction using the Pt/SiO2 catalyst. By contrast, ethylbenzene and phenylethanol are the only products formed on the Co/SiO2 and Pt-Co/SiO2 catalysts. The bimetallic catalyst is more stable as a function of time and more active towards the HDO process than the monometallic systems. The presence of an organic solvent showed only minor changes in product yields with no effect on the product speciation. Periodic density functional theory analysis indicates a stronger interaction between the carbonyl group of acetophenone with Co than with Pt sites of the mono and bimetallic systems, indicating a key activity of oxophilic sites towards improved selectivity to deoxygenated products. La Escuela Nacional de Salud Pública ha contribuido de forma sustancial a la formación de los recursos humanos en las áreas académicas y profesionales del sistema de salud cubano, a través del desarrollo de un amplio programa de formación académica de posgrado y de superación profesional; esta última caracterizada por el desarrollo de cursos, entrenamientos, diplomados, talleres, conferencias y otras formas que generan en la institución gran número de actividades de superación. Este cúmulo de actividades presenta insuficiencias en su gestión y están desprovistas de tecnologías informáticas, que brindarían mejoras en su desempeño. Por tales motivos se realizó una investigación de desarrollo tecnológico con el objetivo de diseñar un sistema web para la gestión de actividades de superación profesional en la Escuela Nacional de Salud Pública en el año 2019. Se empleó la metodología de desarrollo de software AUP-UCI, el entorno de trabajo Vue.js escrito en lenguaje de programación JavaScript, se utilizó MongoDB como gestor de base de datos, y la herramienta Case Visual Paradigm de Lenguaje Unificado de Modelado. Se implementaron algunas funcionalidades del sistema, que se encuentra listo para fase de despliegue. El sistema satisface las necesidades de información para el proceso de superación profesional en la institución, favorece la toma de decisiones de los directivos, docentes, y usuarios vinculados en el proceso, además muestra gran factibilidad su aplicación y extensión a otras instituciones de posgrado de la educación superior de salud y otros sectores(AU)


The National School of Public Health has contributed substantially to the training of human resources in the academic and professional areas of the Cuban health system, due to the development of an extensive program of academic postgraduate training and professional upgrading. The latter is characterized by the expansion of courses, trainings, diplomas, workshops, conferences and others, generating numerous professional development activities in the institution, all of them with insufficiencies in their management and devoid of computer technologies to provide improvements in their performance. For these reasons, a technological development research was carried out in 2019 with the aim of designing a web system for the management of professional development activities at the National School of Public Health. The AUP-UCI software development methodology was used, the Vue.js working environment written in JavaScript programming language and MongoDB as the database manager, and the Case Visual Paradigm tool of Unified Modeling Language. Some functionalities of the system were implemented, which are ready for the deployment phase. The proposed system satisfies the information needs for the improvement of professional upgrading in the institution, favors decision-making by managers, professors, and users linked to the process, shows great feasibility of its application and extension to other postgraduate educational institutions in health and other sectors(AU)

The influence of two autochthonous lactobacilli strains with probiotic potential (Lactobacillus mucosae CNPC007 and Lactobacillus plantarum CNPC020) in comparison to a commercially available probiotic strain (Lactobacillus rhamnosus LR32) in non-fermented dairy desserts added with ingredients (syrup and hydroethanolic extract) derived from jabuticaba (Myrciaria cauliflora) peels was investigated. L. mucosae showed the best survivability and stability of the studied lactobacilli after processing and during storage, respectively, and also remarkably influenced the texture and sensory features of desserts in comparison to the other strains; L. plantarum achieved viability comparable with the commercial probiotic, above 6 log cfu/g up to the 21st day of the products refrigerated storage. The hydroethanolic extract and syrup from the jabuticaba peel contributed to the phenolic content of the dairy desserts (around 30 mg GAE/100 g) that showed to be able to scavenge DPPH radicals (around 300 g dessert/g DPPH). The different lactobacilli strains did not significantly influence the antioxidant capacity parameters of the desserts (p > 0.05), although the desserts' color was not stable during storage and tended to reduce the acceptability scores of the three trials. Non-fermented dairy desserts with jabuticaba peel ingredients showed to be good sources of phenolic compounds with an antioxidant capacity, offering suitable conditions for the viability maintenance of the autochthonous lactobacilli cultures.

This meta-analysis focuses on the accuracy of upgrading to clinically significant prostate cancer (PCa) by multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging-targeted biopsy (MRI-TB) versus systematic biopsy (SB). We searched the Medline, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science, Scopus, and Literatura Latino Americana em Ciências da Saúde databases through January 2020 for comparative, retrospective/prospective, paired-cohort, and randomized clinical trials with paired comparisons. The population consisted of patients with low-risk PCa in active surveillance with at least 1 index lesion on imaging. We evaluated the quality of evidence by using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies-2 score. Group comparisons considered the differences between the area under the curve summary receiver operating characteristic curve in a 2-tailed method. We also compared the positive predictive value of the best single method (MRI-TB or SB) and the referral study test (combined biopsy, a combination of MRI-TB and SB). The meta-analysis included 6 studies enrolling 741 patients. The pooled sensitivity for the 2 groups was 0.79 (95% confidence interval, 0.74-0.83; I2 = 75%) and 0.67 (95% confidence interval, 0.63-0.74; I2 = 55.4%), respectively. The area under the curve for the MRI-TB and SB groups were 0.99 and 0.92 (P < .001), respectively. The positive predictive value for the MRI-TB and combined biopsy groups were similar. The accumulated evidence suggests better results for MRI-TB compared with SB. Therefore, use of MRI-TB alone may be preferable in patients in active surveillance harboring low-risk PCa.

BACKGROUND: We compared upgrading and upstaging rates in low risk and favorable intermediate risk prostate cancer (CaP) patients according to racial and/or ethnic group: Mexican-Americans and Caucasians. METHODS: Within Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results database (2010-2015), we identified low risk and favorable intermediate risk CaP patients according to National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines. Descriptives and logistic regression models were used. Furthermore, a subgroup analysis was performed to test the association between Mexican-American vs. Caucasian racial and/or ethnic groups and upgrading either to Gleason-Grade Group (GGG II) or to GGG III, IV or V, in low risk or favorable intermediate risk CaP patients, respectively. RESULTS: We identified 673 (2.6%) Mexican-American and 24,959 (97.4%) Caucasian CaP patients. Of those, 14,789 were low risk (434 [2.9%] Mexican-Americans vs. 14,355 [97.1%] Caucasians) and 10,834 were favorable intermediate risk (239 [2.2%] Mexican-Americans vs. 10,604 [97.8%] Caucasians). In low risk CaP patients, Mexican-American vs. Caucasian racial and/or ethnic group did not result in either upgrading or upstaging differences. However, in favorable intermediate risk CaP patients, upgrading rate was higher in Mexican-Americans than in Caucasians (31.4 vs. 25.5%, OR 1.33, P = 0.044), but no difference was recorded for upstaging. When comparisons focused on upgrading to GGG III, IV or V, higher rate was recorded in Mexican-American relative to Caucasian favorable intermediate risk CaP patients (20.4 vs. 15.4%, OR 1.41, P = 0.034). CONCLUSION: Low risk Mexican-American CaP patients do not differ from low risk Caucasian CaP patients. However, favorable intermediate risk Mexican-American CaP patients exhibit higher rates of upgrading than their Caucasian counterparts. This information should be considered at treatment decision making.

Energy-driven biorefineries can be designed considering biotechnological and thermochemical conversion pathways. Nevertheless, energy and environmental comparisons are necessary to establish the best way to upgrade lignocellulosic biomass and set the requirements of these processes in different scenarios. This paper aims to evaluate experimentally a biorefinery producing energy vectors using coffee-cut stems (CCS) as feedstock. The obtained yields were the basis for energy and environmental analysis, in two different biorefinery scenarios: (i) production of bioethanol and biogas and (ii) production of syngas and electricity. The energy results indicated that the overall energy efficiency calculated in the first scenario was only 9.15%. Meanwhile, the second biorefinery configuration based on thermochemical routes presented an energy efficiency value of 70.89%. This difference was attributed to the higher consumption of utilities in the biorefinery based on biotechnological routes. The environmental results showed that the impact category of climate change for the first biorefinery (i.e., 0.0193 kg CO2 eq./MJ) had a lower value than that of the second process (i.e., 0.2377 kg CO2 eq./MJ). Thus, the biorefinery based on the biotechnological route presented a better environmental performance. Additionally, the results for both biorefineries allowed concluding that the inclusion of by-products and co-products in the calculation of the environmental analysis can dramatically affect the results.

Microalgae-bacteria consortium based technology using a High Rate Algal Pond (HRAP) interconnected to an Absorption Bubble Column (ABC) has emerged as an environmentally friendly promising option to upgrade biogas. However, the oxygenic photosynthesis of microalgae induces oxygen contamination in upgraded biogas, which could limit its further applications. Several strategies were proposed to favor the oxygen desorption and oxygen uptake in parts and accessories of the upgrading system. The effect of the volumetric ratio liquid recirculation rate/biogas rate (L/G = 5.0, 1.0 y 0.5) was evaluated in conjunction with the application of a novel accessory called Open Trickling Column (OTC). The O2 content in upgraded biogas was around 2.1%v, attaining CO2 removal efficiencies around 90%, at L/G ratio of 1.0 during diurnal and nocturnal periods. The inclusion of an OTC at the previous L/G, enhanced 54% the removal of O2 by stripping and uptake compared with the basal condition. Mass balances of H2S and methane showed that L/G > 1.0 favored the complete oxidation of H2S but promoted the loss of methane in dissolved form. Additionally the effect of increasing linear velocity of liquid broth in the lab-scale HRAP (from 15 cm s-1 to 20 cm s-1) showed to improve the O2 stripping with a consequential increase of biomass concentration under steady-state (from 0.7 to 1.4 g L-1) besides achieving O2 content in the upgraded biogas around 1.5%v.

RESUMO

A type 1 reaction (T1R) is also known as a reversal reaction. This phenomenon involves exarcebation of the immune system or delayed-type hypersensitivity in response to the antigens of Mycobacterium leprae present in parasitized tissues. It occurs in mnost patients of the tuberculoid and borderline forms of the Ridley & Jopling classification for leprosy. It is an important phenomenon that can occur before, during, or after leprosy treatment and can be destructive, causing tissue damage mainly in the nerves, as well as irreversible sequelae. The recognition of T1R in histological sections may be notified prior to clinical presentation. Histopathological recognition is vital in defining or confirming the presence of T1R, guiding the treatment of the reaction process, avoiding or reducing the possibiliy of serious sequelae, correcting possible mistakes in the classification of patients within the spectrum of leprosy, and ruling out other diseases that can clinically simulate a T1R. In this chapter, the histopathological characteristics that allow the recognition of T1R, various histopathological aspects of the common forms of leprosy, and histopathological differential diagnoses are discussed.
