INTRODUCTION: Chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR-T) cell therapy is an innovative technology that has shown promising results in clinical trials. Treatment is based on modifying the patient's own T cells to express artificial surface receptors to specifically recognize and attack the tumor cells. OBJECTIVE: To synthesize available evidence on the incidence and management strategies of cytokine release syndrome in patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma who received CAR-T cell therapy. METHODS: This is a systematic literature review. The search was conducted in the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of science databases. This review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The systematic review protocol is registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) database under number CRD42022359258. RESULTS: Nineteen studies were included with a total of 1193 patients who received CAR-T cell therapy. Of these patients, 804 (67%) developed some degree of cytokine release syndrome. The frequencies of Grade 3 and 4 cytokine release syndrome were 10% and 3%, respectively. The regimen most used in the management of the syndrome included tocilizumab and/or glucocorticoids. CONCLUSION: The results obtained in this review demonstrate high rates of cytokine release syndrome in patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma treated with CAR-T cell therapy, however these events are manageable, supporting the conclusion that this therapy is safe in these patients.

Graphene-based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensors have emerged as a promising technology for the highly sensitive and accurate detection of biomolecules. This study presents a comprehensive theoretical analysis of graphene-based SPR biosensors, focusing on configurations with single and bimetallic metallic layers. In this study, we investigated the impact of various metallic substrates, including gold and silver, and the number of graphene layers on key performance metrics: sensitivity of detection, detection accuracy, and quality factor. Our findings reveal that configurations with graphene first supported on gold exhibit superior performance, with sensitivity of detection enhancements up to 30% for ten graphene layers. In contrast, silver-supported configurations, while demonstrating high sensitivity, face challenges in maintaining detection accuracy. Additionally, reducing the thickness of metallic layers by 30% optimizes light coupling and enhances sensor performance. These insights highlight the significant potential of graphene-based SPR biosensors in achieving high sensitivity of detection and reliability, paving the way for their application in diverse biosensing technologies. Our findings pretend to motivate future research focusing on optimizing metallic layer thickness, improving the stability of silver-supported configurations, and experimentally validating the theoretical findings to further advance the development of high-performance SPR biosensors.

Bioluminescence resonance energy transfer photodynamic therapy, which uses light generated by bioluminescent proteins to activate photosensitizers and produce reactive oxygen species without the need for external irradiation, has shown promising results in cancer models. However, the characterization of delivery systems that can incorporate the components of this therapy for preferential delivery to the tumor remains necessary. In this work, we have characterized parvovirus B19-like particles (B19V-VLPs) as a platform for a photosensitizer and a bioluminescent protein. By chemical and biorthogonal conjugation, we conjugated rose Bengal photosensitizer and firefly luciferase to B19V-VLPs and a protein for added specificity. The results showed that B19V-VLPs can withstand decoration with all three components without affecting its structure or stability. The conjugated luciferase showed activity and was able to activate rose Bengal to produce singlet oxygen without the need for external light. The photodynamic reaction generated by the functionalized VLPs-B19 can decrease the viability of tumor cells in vitro and affect tumor growth and metastasis in the 4 T1 model. Treatment with functionalized VLPs-B19 also increased the percentage of CD4 and CD8 cell populations in the spleen and in inguinal lymph nodes compared to vehicle-treated mice. Our results support B19V-VLPs as a delivery platform for bioluminescent photodynamic therapy components to solid tumors.

The study of diffusion in biological materials is crucial for fields like food science, engineering, and pharmaceuticals. Research that combines numerical and analytical methods is needed to better understand diffusive phenomena across various dimensions and under variable boundary conditions within food matrices. This study aims to bridge this gap by examining the diffusion of substances through biological materials analytically and numerically, calculating diffusivity and conducting surface analysis. The research proposes a process for sweetening Bing-type cherries (Prunus avium) using sucrose/xylitol solutions and a staining technique utilising erythrosine and red gardenia at varying concentrations (119, 238 and 357 ppm) and temperatures (40, 50 and 60 °C). Given the fruit's epidermis resistance, the effective diffusivities of skin were inferior to those in flesh. Temperature and concentration synergise in enhancing diffusion coefficients and dye penetration within the food matrix (357 ppm and 60 °C). Red gardenia displayed significant temperature-dependent variation (p = 0.001), whereas erythrosine dye remained stable by temperature changes (p > 0.05). Gardenia's effective diffusivities in cherry flesh and skin, at 357 ppm and 60 °C, 3.89E-08 and 6.61E-09 m2/s, respectively, significantly differed from those obtained at lower temperatures and concentrations. The results highlight the temperature-concentration impacts on mass transfer calculations for food colouring processes and preservation methodologies.

RESUMO

Numerous body locations have been utilized to obtain an accurate body temperature. While some are commonly used, their accuracy, response time, invasiveness varies greatly, and determines their potential clinical and/or research use. This review discusses human body temperature locations, their accuracy, ease of use, advantages, and drawbacks. We explain the concept of core body temperature and which of the locations achieve the best correlation to this temperature. The body locations include axilla, oral cavity, rectum, digestive and urinary tracts, skin, tympanic, nasopharynx, esophagus, and pulmonary artery. The review also discusses the latest temperature technologies, heat-flux technology and telemetric ingestible temperature pills, and the body locations used to validate these devices. Rectal and esophageal measurements are the most frequently used.

Nanotechnology has been increasingly used in plant sciences, with engineered nanoparticles showing promising results as fertilizers or pesticides. The present study compared the effects in the foliar application of Se nanoparticles (SeNPs) or sodium selenite-Se(IV) on rice seedlings. The degree of plant growth, photosynthetic pigment content, and concentrations of Se, Na, Mg, K, Ca, Mn, Co, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb were evaluated. The results showed that the application of SeNPs at high concentrations (5 mg L-1), as well as the application of Se(IV), inhibited plant growth and increased the root concentrations of As and Pb. The application of SeNPs at 0.5 mg L-1 significantly increased Se accumulation in the aerial part from 0.161 ± 0.028 mg kg-1 to 0.836 ± 0.097 mg kg-1 without influencing physiological, chemical, or biochemical parameters. When applied to leaves, SeNPs tended to remain in the aerial part, while the application of Se(IV) caused a higher Se translocation from the shoots to the roots. This study provides useful information concerning the uptake, accumulation, and translocation of different Se formulations in rice seedlings and their effect on plant ionomic profiles, thus showing that the foliar application of SeNPs at low concentrations can be an effective and safe alternative for rice biofortification.

RESUMO

Distal nerve transfers can restore precise motor control in tetraplegic patients. When nerve transfers are not successful, tendon transfers may be used for subsequent reconstruction. In this case, an extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) tendon transfer was used to restore thumb and finger flexion following an unsuccessful ECRB to anterior interosseous nerve transfer in a young tetraplegic patient. Twelve months following tendon transfer, the patient demonstrated functional grip and pinch strength and was using both hands for daily activities. Level of Evidence: Level V (Therapeutic).

Cotrimoxazole, the combined formulation of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim, is one of the treatments of choice for several infectious diseases, particularly urinary tract infections. Both components of cotrimoxazole are synthetic antimicrobial drugs, and their combination was introduced into medical therapeutics about half a century ago. In Gram-negative bacteria, resistance to cotrimoxazole is widespread, being based on the acquisition of genes from the auxiliary genome that confer resistance to each of its antibacterial components. Starting from previous knowledge on the genotype of resistance to sulfamethoxazole in a collection of cotrimoxazole resistant uropathogenic Escherichia coli strains, this work focused on the identification of the genetic bases of the trimethoprim resistance of these same strains. Molecular techniques employed included PCR and Sanger sequencing of specific amplicons, conjugation experiments and NGS sequencing of the transferred plasmids. Mobile genetic elements conferring the trimethoprim resistance phenotype were identified and included integrons, transposons and single gene cassettes. Therefore, strains exhibited several ways to jointly resist both antibiotics, implying different levels of genetic linkage between genes conferring resistance to sulfamethoxazole (sul) and trimethoprim (dfrA). Two structures were particularly interesting because they represented a highly cohesive arrangements ensuring cotrimoxazole resistance. They both carried a single gene cassette, dfrA14 or dfrA1, integrated in two different points of a conserved cluster sul2-strA-strB, carried on transferable plasmids. The results suggest that the pressure exerted by cotrimoxazole on bacteria of our environment is still promoting the evolution toward increasingly compact gene arrangements, carried by mobile genetic elements that move them in the genome and also transfer them horizontally among bacteria.

The main objective of this work was to propose and evaluate a methodology for shielding-gas selection in additive manufacturing assisted by wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) with an austenitic stainless steel as feedstock. To validate the proposed methodology, the impact of multi-component gases was valued using three different Ar-based blends recommended as shielding gas for GMA (gas metal arc) of the target material, using CMT (cold metal transfer) as the process version. This assessment considered features that potentially affect the building of the case study of thin walls, such as metal transfer regularity, deposition time, and geometrical and metallurgical characteristics. Different settings of wire-feed speeds were conceived to maintain a similar mean current (first constraint for comparison's sake) among the three gas blends. This approach implied different mean wire-feed speeds and simultaneously forced a change in the deposition speed to maintain the same amount of material deposited per unit of length (second comparison constraint). The composition of the gases affects the operational performance of the shielding gases. It was concluded that by following this methodology, shielding-gas selection decision-making is possible based on the perceived characteristics of the different commercial blends.

Introduction: Pathogenesis of cutaneous leishmaniases involves parasite growth, persistent inflammation, and likely participation of lipoproteins (LP). The cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP), involved in LP remodeling, has been shown to participate in the inflammatory response and the evolution of infectious conditions. Methods: We evaluated the impact of the presence of CETP on infection by Leishmania (L.) amazonensis in an experimental model of cutaneous leishmaniasis using C57BL6/J mice transgenic for human CETP (CETP), having as control their littermates that do not express the protein, wild-type (WT) mice. The progression of the lesion after infection in the footpad was monitored for 12 weeks. Two groups of animals were formed to collect the plantar pad in the 4th and 12th week post-infection. Results: The lesion increased from the 3rd week onwards, in both groups, with a gradual decrease from the 10th week onwards in the CETP group compared to the WT group, showing a reduction in parasitism and an improvement in the healing process, a reduction in CD68+ cells, and an increase in CD163+ and CD206, characterizing a population of M2 macrophages. A reduction in ARG1+ cells and an increase in INOS+ cells were observed. During infection, the LP profile showed an increase in triglycerides in the VLDL fraction in the CETP group at 12 weeks. Gene expression revealed a decrease in the CD36 receptor in the CETP group at 12 weeks, correlating with healing and parasite reduction. In vitro, macrophages derived from bone marrow cells from CETP mice showed lower parasite load at 48 h and, a reduction in arginase activity at 4 h accompanied by increased NO production at 4 and 24 h compared to WT macrophages, corroborating the in vivo findings. Discussion: The data indicate that the presence of CETP plays an important role in resolving Leishmania (L.) amazonensis infection, reducing parasitism, and modulating the inflammatory response in controlling infection and tissue repair.

The increasing frequency of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is a constant threat to global human health. Therefore, the pathogens of the ESKAPE group (Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Enterobacter spp.) are among the most relevant causes of hospital infections responsible for millions of deaths every year. However, little has been explored about the danger of microorganisms resistant to biocides such as antiseptics and disinfectants. Widely used in domestic, industrial, and hospital environments, these substances reach the environment and can cause selective pressure for resistance genes and induce cross-resistance to antibiotics, further aggravating the problem. Therefore, it is necessary to use innovative and efficient strategies to monitor the spread of genes related to resistance to biocides. Whole genome sequencing and bioinformatics analysis aiming to search for sequences encoding resistance mechanisms are essential to help monitor and combat these pathogens. Thus, this work describes the construction of a bioinformatics tool that integrates different databases to identify gene sequences that may confer some resistance advantage about biocides. Furthermore, the tool analyzed all the genomes of Brazilian ESKAPE isolates deposited at NCBI and found a series of different genes related to resistance to benzalkonium chloride, chlorhexidine, and triclosan, which were the focus of this work. As a result, the presence of resistance genes was identified in different types of biological samples, environments, and hosts. Regarding mobile genetic elements (MGEs), around 52% of isolates containing genes related to resistance to these compounds had their genes identified in plasmids, and 48.7% in prophages. These data show that resistance to biocides can be a silent, underestimated danger spreading across different environments and, therefore, requires greater attention.

INTRODUCTION: In some studies, the peritoneal solute transfer rate (PSTR) through the peritoneal membrane has been related to an increased risk of mortality. It has been observed in the literature that those patients with rapid diffusion of solutes through the peritoneal membrane (high/fast transfer) and probably those with high average transfer characterized by the Peritoneal Equilibrium Test (PET) are associated with higher mortality compared to those patients who have a slow transfer rate. However, some authors have not documented this fact. In the present study, we want to evaluate the (etiological) relationship between the characteristics of peritoneal membrane transfer and mortality and survival of the technique in an incident population on peritoneal dialysis in RTS Colombia during the years 2007-2017 using a competing risk model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was carried out at RTS Colombia in the period between 2007 and 2017. In total, there were 8170 incident patients older than 18 years, who had a Peritoneal Equilibration Test (PET) between 28 and 180 days from the start of therapy. Demographic, clinical, and laboratory variables were evaluated. The (etiological) relationship between the type of peritoneal solute transfer rate at the start of therapy and overall mortality and technique survival were analyzed using a competing risk model (cause-specific proportional hazard model described by Royston-Lambert). RESULTS: Patients were classified into four categories based on the PET result: Slow/Low transfer (16.0%), low average (35.4%), high average (32.9%), and High/Fast transfer (15.7%). During follow-up, with a median of 730 days, 3025 (37.02%) patients died, 1079 (13.2%) were transferred to hemodialysis and 661 (8.1%) were transplanted. In the analysis of competing risks, adjusted for age, sex, presence of DM, HTA, body mass index, residual function, albumin, hemoglobin, phosphorus, and modality of PD at the start of therapy, we found cause-specific HR (HRce) for high/fast transfer was 1.13 (95% CI 0.98-1.30) p = 0.078, high average 1.08 (95% CI 0.96-1.22) p = 0.195, low average 1.09 (95% CI 0.96-1.22) p = 0.156 compared to the low/slow transfer rate. For technique survival, cause-specific HR for high/rapid transfer of 1.22 (95% CI 0.98-1.52) p = 0.66, high average HR was 1.10 (95% CI 0.91-1.33) p = 0.296, low average HR of 1.03 (95% CI 0.85-1.24) p = 0.733 compared with the low/slow transfer rate, adjusted for age, sex, DM, HTA, BMI, residual renal function, albumin, phosphorus, hemoglobin, and PD modality at start of therapy. Non-significant differences. CONCLUSIONS: When evaluating the etiological relationship between the type of peritoneal solute transfer rate and overall mortality and survival of the technique using a competing risk model, we found no etiological relationship between the characteristics of peritoneal membrane transfer according to the classification given by Twardowski assessed at the start of peritoneal dialysis therapy and overall mortality or technique survival in adjusted models. The analysis will then be made from the prognostic model with the purpose of predicting the risk of mortality and survival of the technique using the risk subdistribution model (Fine & Gray).

Heavy metal pollution in soil has emerged as a major environmental concern. This can be attributed to human activities such as mining, modern agriculture, and industrialization. This study was conducted to determine how heavy metals spread from mine tailings to surrounding farmland. Metal absorption and accumulation were also investigated in the root and shoot biomass of tapioca crops grown in those farmlands. Metal concentrations in MTAS1 were 85.3 ± 1.2, 45.8 ± 1.5, 134.8 ± 1.7, 92.4 ± 2.2, and 78.95 ± 1.4 mg kg-1, respectively. Heavy metal concentrations in MTAS2 and MTAS3 were found to be 79.62 ± 1.6, 75.4 ± 1.5, 41.31 ± 1.1, 47.8 ± 1.6, 142.5 ± 2.1, 128.4 ± 1.4, 86.2 ± 1.9, 79.5 ± 1.3, and 83.4 ± 1.2 mg kg-1, respectively. Tapioca crop shoot and root biomass grown at these metal polluted sites absorbed and accumulated significant amounts of Cd, Cu, Zn, Pb, Ni, and Mn. Notably, the metal content of the tapioca crop's root and shoot biomass exceeded national standards.

The impact of the polymeric matrix on the photophysical characteristics of monomeric dyes responsive to excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) was investigated through UV-Vis absorption as well as steady-state and time-resolved emission spectroscopies. For this purpose, two benzoxazole monomers (M1 and M2) with acryloyl groups at different positions in their molecular structures were employed to facilitate covalent bonding within a styrene chain. Our findings reveal significant variations in their excited-state properties due to the proximity of the acryloyl groups, which affects the energy barrier of the ESIPT reaction, the emission wavelength, and the balance between the normal and tautomeric forms. The experimental results were corroborated through theoretical investigations at the DFT/TDDFT level, specifically using the B3LYP-D3/def2-TZVP methodology. Three notable observations emerged: donor/acceptor groups at the meta/para positions induced electron distribution changes, causing red-shifted emission for M2; in the polymer film, particularly in PM1, intramolecular hydrogen bond deactivation favored N* emission over T* emission; and the zwitterionic character of the T* species. This study underscores the advantages of functionalization in polymers, which can lead to colorless films and prevalent N* or T* emission, and contributes valuable insights into molecular design strategies for tailoring the photophysical properties of polymeric materials.

Aeromonas trota is sensitive to most antibiotics and the sole species of this genus susceptible to ampicillin. This susceptibility profile could be related to its inability to acquire exogenous DNA. In this study, A. trota isolates were analyzed to establish their capacity to incorporate foreign DNA. Fourteen strains were identified as A. trota by multilocus phylogenetic analysis (MLPA). Minimal inhibitory concentrations of antibiotics (MIC) were assessed, confirming the susceptibility to most antibiotics tested. To explore their capacity to be transformed, A. trota strains were used as recipients in different horizontal transfer assays. Results showed that around fifty percent of A. trota strains were able to incorporate pBAMD1-2 and pBBR1MCS-3 plasmids after conjugal transfer. In all instances, conjugation frequencies were very low. Interestingly, several isoforms of plasmid pBBR1MCS-3 were observed in transconjugants. Strains could not receive pAr-32, a native plasmid from A. salmonicida. A. trota strains were unable to receive DNA by means of electroporation, natural transformation or vesiduction. These results confirm that A. trota species are extremely refractory to horizontal gene transfer, which could be associated to plasmid instability resulting from oligomerization or to the presence of defense systems against exogenous genetic material in their genomes. To explain the poor results of horizontal gene transfer (HGT), selected genomes were sequenced and analyzed, revealing the presence of defense systems, which could prevent the stable incorporation of exogenous DNA in A. trota.

Dairy herds have adopted sexed semen (SS) and beef semen (BS) to control heifer inventory and increase calf sales revenue. Beef in vitro-produced embryo transfer (beef IVP-ET) may be an alternative to increase calf sales revenue. Besides, raising those Jersey beef crossbred and/or pure beef animals in a dairy system may be a new source of revenue. We aimed to evaluate breed strategies combining dairy conventional semen (CS), SS, BS, and beef IVP-ET on herd dynamics and profitability by marketing those animals with one-day-old or raising them to 180 kg. A Markov chain model was developed to maximize the profitability of Jersey herds by changing the number of dairy heifers sold at birth and the culling rate of 3rd and greater parity cows. The model presents inputs on the reproductive and productive performance of heifers and cows over time. The last year's data (year 10 - steady state) was used to calculate accrual operational cost and revenue per cow per year. We varied the breeding strategy by breeding order and parities, the embryo transfer cost ($85 or $170), the pure beef calf market price ($200 or $300), and by marketing Jersey-beef and pure beef animals with one-day-old or raising them to 180 kg. A total of 8 scenarios + default scenario were simulated. Overall, the proportion of SS use was 47.3 ± 0.6%. For the scenarios replacing all CS breedings with BS breedings, the proportion of CS and BS used was 52.3 ± 0.6. When beef IVP-ET was used, the percentage of BS and beef IVP-ET used was 22.4 ± 0.1% and 31.0 ± 0.1%, respectively. We observed that when we compared SS:BS with the default scenario, the production of purebred Jersey male calves was reduced by 83.5%, and profit/cow per year was increased from $113.5 to $203.3 with SS:BS. When a beef IVP-ET of $85 per transfer was used (scenarios 2 and 3), profit/cow per year was $145.5 and $176.2 for a pure-beef calf price of $200 and $300, respectively. In scenario 4, with a beef IVP-ET cost of $170, the lowest profit ($52.9 per cow per year) was found when marketing one-day-old pure-beef calves at $200. The highest profit was achieved for scenario raising the Jersey-beef crossbred animals to 180 kg ($232.9, scenario 6), followed by scenario 7 ($222.9, SS:BS:IVP-ET) with an embryo transfer cost of $85. Under the current market conditions, combining SS and BS in the reproductive program was a feasible economic opportunity for Jersey herds, yielding the highest net return. The adoption of beef IVP-ET in a reproductive program can potentially increase profit/cow per year, but its profitability will depend on the beef IVP-ET pregnancy cost, the pure-beef market price, calf performance, and the herd reproductive performance. In conclusion, raising the Jersey-beef crossbred calves may be a profitable strategy, and dairy producers need to evaluate the best option to invest in since it will take an extra risk to produce high-quality animals to the market.

The understanding of antibiotic resistance, one of the major health threats of our time, is mostly based on dated and incomplete notions, especially in clinical contexts. The "canonical" mechanisms of action and pharmacodynamics of antibiotics, as well as the methods used to assess their activity upon bacteria, have not changed in decades; the same applies to the definition, acquisition, selective pressures, and drivers of resistance. As a consequence, the strategies to improve antibiotic usage and overcome resistance have ultimately failed. This review gathers most of the "non-canonical" notions on antibiotics and resistance: from the alternative mechanisms of action of antibiotics and the limitations of susceptibility testing to the wide variety of selective pressures, lateral gene transfer mechanisms, ubiquity, and societal factors maintaining resistance. Only by having a "big picture" view of the problem can adequate strategies to harness resistance be devised. These strategies must be global, addressing the many aspects that drive the increasing prevalence of resistant bacteria aside from the clinical use of antibiotics.

Background: Traumatic injury to the long thoracic nerve causes paralysis of the serratus muscle, clinically expressed as winged scapula and functional impairment of the shoulder girdle. Treatment varies according to the severity of the injury, with a focus on early intervention for best results; however, the therapeutic approach remains a challenge at present. Case Description: We present the case of a 32-year-old male patient, athlete, right-handed, presented with bilateral paresis predominantly in the right arm, associated with paresthesia and changes in the coloring of the upper limbs. After being diagnosed with Thoracic Outlet Syndrome and undergoing surgery, vascular symptoms persisted with a significant loss of strength in the right shoulder. Winged scapula was observed and structural lesions were excluded on magnetic resonance imaging. Electromyographic studies confirmed the presumption of traumatic nerve involvement of the long thoracic nerve. Notwithstanding 6 months of physical therapy, there was no improvement, so a nerve transfer from the thoracodorsal nerve to the right long thoracic nerve was chosen. At 12 months, complete resolution of the winged scapula and functional recovery were observed. The patient also experienced a decrease in preoperative pain from 5/10 to 2/10 on the visual analog scale. Conclusion: Nerve transfer from the thoracodorsal nerve to the long thoracic nerve is a safe and effective technique to treat winged scapula due to long thoracic nerve injury.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether blastocysts transferred on day 5 or day 6 of embryo development, as well as positivity for anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies, affect gestational outcomes in euthyroid women undergoing in vitro fertilisation. METHODS: Of 428 women who underwent in vitro fertilisation assessed in this retrospective cohort study, 212 (49.5%) underwent embryo transfer on day 5 of blastulation and 216 (50.5%) on day 6. Dichotomization based on anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies status was also performed, with 370 (86.4%) women testing negative and 58 (13.6%) testing positive. Clinical and hormonal data and rates of clinical pregnancy, miscarriage, and live births were compared between the groups. RESULTS: When evaluating gestational outcomes based on the day of blastulation, a statistically significant difference was observed in clinical pregnancy rates [51.4% (day 5) vs. 40.7% (day 6); p=0.033]. However, there was no significant difference in the relative frequencies of miscarriages (p=1.000), live births (p=1.000), or preterm births (p=1.000). Using Cramer's V test, a weak association was found between the day of blastulation and clinical pregnancy outcomes (V2=10.7%; p=0.027). There were no statistically significant differences between the anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies-negative and -positive groups in terms of clinical pregnancy rates (p=0.396), miscarriages (p=0.129), and live births (p=0.129). CONCLUSIONS: Higher rates of clinical pregnancy were observed in women who underwent embryo transfers performed on day 5 compared to those on day 6. However, no effect was observed with gestational outcomes. Further, anti-thyroid peroxidase antibody positivity did not have a statistically significant impact on gestational outcomes.

Background With the advent of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, some doubts have been raised regarding the potential respiratory problems that patients who previously underwent a phrenic nerve transfer could have. Objectives To analyze the effects of the coronavirus infection on two populations, one from Argentina and another from Taiwan. Specific objectives were: (1) to identify the rate of COVID in patients with a history of phrenic nerve transfer for treatment of palsy; (2) to identify the overall symptom profile; (3) to compare Argentinian versus Taiwanese populations; and (4) to determine if any phrenic nerve transfer patients are at particular risk of more severe COVID. Methods A telephonic survey that included data regarding the number of episodes of acute COVID-19 infection, the symptoms it caused, the presence or absence of potential or life-threatening complications, and the status of COVID-19 vaccination were studied. Intergroup comparisons were conducted using the nonparametric Mann-Whitney U test, with categorical variables conducted using either the Pearson χ2 analysis or the Fisher's exact test, as appropriate. Results A total of 77 patients completed the survey, 40 from Taiwan and 37 from Argentina. Fifty-five (71.4%) developed a diagnosis of COVID. However, among these, only four had any level of dyspnea reported (4/55 = 7.3%), all mild. There were also no admissions to hospital or an intensive care unit, no intubations, and no deaths. All 55 patients isolated themselves at home. Conclusions It can be concluded that an acute COVID-19 infection was very well tolerated in our patients. (Level of evidence 3b, case reports).
