RESUMO

O avanço tecnológico revolucionou a prática odontológica, com os alinhadores ortodônticos emergindo como uma escolha altamente popular entre pacientes que buscam tratamentos estéticos e confortáveis. No entanto, apesar de sua crescente demanda, permanecem questões cruciais relacionadas à eficácia e análise dimensional desses dispositivos. Este artigo oferece uma análise abrangente das características químicas, físicas e mecânicas dos alinhadores ortodônticos, iluminando a influência vital do processo de termoformação e da espessura nas propriedades desses materiais. Compreender profundamente essas características é essencial para aprimorar a eficácia e a durabilidade dos alinhadores ortodônticos, contribuindo, assim, para o sucesso e a evolução dos tratamentos ortodônticos modernos. Neste estudo, exploraremos: 1) as propriedades químicas dos materiais e como elas afetam a biocompatibilidade e a resistência à degradação; 2) as características físicas, incluindo textura de superfície, transparência e sua influência na adaptação bucal e no conforto do paciente; 3) as propriedades mecânicas, como flexibilidade e rigidez, e como essas características afetam a distribuição de forças de movimentação dentária; 4) a influência do processo de termoformação na precisão e reprodutibilidade dos alinhadores, bem como sua relação com a qualidade do tratamento; 5) a análise crítica da espessura dos alinhadores e seu papel na capacidade de aplicar forças adequadas para a movimentação dentária. Ao abordar esses aspectos, este artigo visa oferecer uma visão holística das complexidades envolvidas na fabricação e uso de alinhadores ortodônticos. Esperamos que esta revisão contribua para uma compreensão mais profunda desses dispositivos e promova avanços significativos na ortodontia, beneficiando tanto os profissionais quanto os pacientes.


Technological advancement has revolutionized dental practice, with orthodontic aligners emerging as a trendy choice among patients seeking aesthetic and comfortable treatments. However, despite their growing demand, crucial questions remain regarding these devices' effectiveness and dimensional analysis. This article offers a comprehensive analysis of the chemical, physical, and mechanical characteristics of orthodontic aligners, illuminating the vital influence of the thermoforming process and thickness on the properties of these materials. Understanding these characteristics in depth is essential to improving the effectiveness and durability of orthodontic aligners, thus contributing to the success and evolution of modern orthodontic treatments. In this study, we will explore 1) the chemical properties of materials and how these properties affect biocompatibility and resistance to degradation; 2) the physical characteristics, including surface texture, transparency and their influence on oral adaptation and patient comfort; 3) mechanical properties, such as flexibility and stiffness, and how these characteristics affect the distribution of tooth movement forces; 4) the influence of the thermoforming process on the precision and reproducibility of the aligners, as well as its relationship with the quality of the treatment; 5) critical analysis of aligner thickness and its role in the ability to apply adequate forces for tooth movement. By addressing these aspects, this article aims to offer a holistic view of the complexities involved in manufacturing and using orthodontic aligners. We hope this review will contribute to a deeper understanding of these devices and promote significant advances in orthodontics, benefiting professionals and patients.

We tested if the movement slowness of individuals with Parkinson's disease is related to their decreased ability to generate adequate net torques and linearly coordinate them between joints. This cross-sectional study included ten individuals with Parkinson's disease and ten healthy individuals. They performed planar movements with a reversal over three target distances. We calculated joint kinematics of the elbow and shoulder using spatial orientation. The muscle, interaction, and net torques were integrated into the acceleration/deceleration phases of the fingertip speed. We calculated the linear correlations of those torques between joints. Both groups modulated the elbow and shoulder net torques with target distances. They linearly coupled the production of torques. Both groups did not modulate the interaction torques. The movement slowness in Parkinson's disease was related to the difficulty in generating the appropriate muscle and net torques in the task. The interaction torques do not seem to play any role in movement control.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the mechanical behavior of UCLA and Mini-conical abutments for implants with Tri-channel connections regarding torque loss and vertical misfit. Twenty 3-element metal-ceramic fixed partial dentures (FPD) supported by 2 implants were manufactured and divided into 2 groups (n = 10): UCLA (group 1) and Mini-conical Abutments (group 2). The evaluation of torque loss was carried out before and after mechanical cycling, while the vertical fit was evaluated throughout the different stages of manufacturing the prostheses, as well pre- and postcycling (300,000 cycles, 30 N). Statistical analyses of torque loss and vertical misfit were performed using the linear mixed effects model. Both groups showed torque loss after mechanical cycling (P < .05); however, there was no significant percentage differences between them (P = .795). Before cycling, the groups showed a significant difference in terms of vertical misfit values (P < .05); however, this difference was no long observed after cycling (P = .894). Both groups showed torque loss after the cycling test, with no significant difference (P > .05). There was no significant difference in vertical misfit after mechanical cycling; however, in group 1 (UCLA) there was accommodation of the implant-UCLA abutment interface, while group 2 (Mini-conical abutment) did not show changes in the interface with the implant after the test. Both groups behaved similarly regarding the torque loss of the prosthesis retention screws pre- and postmechanical cycling, with greater loss after the test.

This paper presents a novel method for load torque estimation in three-phase induction motors using air gap flux measurement and the conversion of this type of time-domain signal into grayscale images for further processing as inputs for an inception-type convolutional neural network. The magnetic flux was measured employing a Hall effect sensor installed inside the machine, near the stator slots, and above the stator windings. In this case, the sensor was able to measure a resultant magnetic flux density, having both rotor and stator magnetic flux contributions. The present methodology does not require motor parameters for torque prediction. The proposed approach successfully estimated load torque using three optimizers across almost the entire motor load operational range, spanning from 1.5% to 93.9% of the rated load. Four model configurations achieved a mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) less than or equal to 3.7%. Specifically, two models for a 40 × 50 pixel image achieved MAPE of 3.7% and 3%, one model for a 40 × 25 pixel image achieved a MAPE of 3.5%, and one model for a 50 × 80 pixel image achieved a MAPE of 3.3%. This research has been experimentally validated with a 7.5 kW squirrel cage induction machine.

Torque Teno Virus (TTV) is a nonpathogenic and ubiquitous ssDNA virus, a member of the Anelloviridae family. TTV has been postulated as a biomarker in transplant patients. This study aimed to determine the TTV species diversity and variability in renal transplant recipients and to associate species diversity with the corresponding TTV viral load. From 27 recipients, 30 plasma samples were selected. Viral load was determined using two real-time PCR assays, followed by RCA-NGS and ORF1 phylogenetic analysis. The TTV diversity was determined in all samples. Variability was determined in three patients with two sequential samples (pre- and post-transplantation). Most of the samples presented multiple TTV species, up to 15 different species were detected. In the pre-transplant samples (n = 12), the most prevalent species were TTV3 (75%) and TTV13 (75%), and the median number of species per sample was 5 (IQR: 4-7.5). TTV3 was also the most prevalent (56%) in the post-transplant samples (n = 18), and the median number of species was 2 (IQR: 1.8-5.5). No significant correlation between the number of species and viral load was found. The number and type of TTV species showed total variability over time. We report high TTV species diversity in Argentinian recipients, especially in pre-transplant period, with total intra-host variability. However, we found no significant correlation between this high diversity and TTV viral load.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to assess the interaction between a 0.019×0.025-inch (″) stainless steel archwire and two types of passive self-ligating brackets with the same slot height (0.022″) and different slot depths (0.028″ and 0.026″, and to measure the archwire/slot play as well as to compare the torque expression with archwire torsions of 12°, 24°, and 36°. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An experimental device was developed along with a universal testing machine to measure torque expression in two types of brackets with 0.028″ and 0.026″ slot depths. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's test were performed to identify the differences between groups. RESULTS: The 0.026″ slot bracket presented greater archwire/slot play when compared to the 0.028″ bracket. Torque expression with torsions of 24° and 36° were significantly higher in the 0.028″ depth brackets when compared to the 0.026″ depth brackets. CONCLUSION: The 0.022″×0.026″ passive self-ligating brackets attached with a 0.019″×0.025″ stainless steel archwire provided no greater torque control when compared to 0.022″×0.028″ passive self-ligating brackets.

Successful performance in grappling combat sports (GCS) can be influenced by the fighter's capacity to sustain high-intensity contractions of the handgrip muscles during combat. This study investigated the influence of GCS experience on the critical torque (CT), impulse above CT (W'), tolerance, and neuromuscular fatigue development during severe-intensity handgrip exercise by comparing fighters and untrained individuals. Eleven GCS fighters and twelve untrained individuals participated in three experimental sessions for handgrip muscles: (1) familiarization with the experimental procedures and strength assessment; (2) an all-out test to determine CT and W'; and (3) intermittent exercise performed in the severe-intensity domain (CT + 15%) until task failure. No significant differences were found in CT and neuromuscular fatigue between groups (p > 0.05). However, GCS fighters showed greater W' (GCS fighters 2238.8 ± 581.2 N·m·s vs. untrained 1670.4 ± 680.6 N·m·s, p < 0.05) and exercise tolerance (GCS fighters 8.38 ± 2.93 min vs. untrained 5.36 ± 1.42 min, p < 0.05) than untrained individuals. These results suggest that long-term GCS sports training can promote increased tolerance to severe-intensity handgrip exercise and improved W' without changes in CT or the magnitude of neuromuscular fatigue.

BACKGROUND: The ankle dorsiflexion range of motion (ADF-ROM) during single support phase allows elastic energy storage in the calcaneal tendon, contributing to advance the body forward. Reduced ADF-ROM may influence lower limb kinetics and stiffness. RESEARCH QUESTION: What is the influence of reduced passive ADF-ROM on lower limb internal moments and stiffness during gait? METHODS: Thirty-two participants, classified into two groups according to passive ADF-ROM (smaller than 10° and greater than 15°), were submitted to gait assessment at self-selected speed with a force platform and a three-dimensional motion analysis system. Statistical parametrical mapping (SPM) analyses were used to compare the lower limbs' internal moments between groups. Independent t-tests analyzed the differences between groups on lower limb stiffness during gait. RESULTS: The lower ADF-ROM group had greater knee flexor moment (terminal stance and push-off), greater ankle abductor (i.e., shank internal rotator) moment in terminal stance and greater knee internal rotator moment in mid to terminal stance. The lower ADF-ROM group also had higher lower limb stiffness during gait. SIGNIFICANCE: Individuals with reduced passive ADF-ROM had greater lower limb stiffness and adopted a gait pattern with increased knee and ankle moments, suggesting increased loading at these joints.

ABSTRACT Objective: This study aimed to compare the insertion torque (IT), flexural strength (FS) and surface alterations between stainless steel (SS-MIs) and titanium alloy (Ti-MIs) orthodontic mini-implants. Methods: Twenty-four MIs (2 x 10 mm; SS-MIs, n = 12; Ti-MIs, n = 12) were inserted on artificial bone blocks of 20 lb/ft3 (20 PCF) and 40 lb/ft3 (40 PCF) density. The maximum IT was recorded using a digital torque meter. FS was evaluated at 2, 3 and 4 mm-deflection. Surface topography and chemical composition of MIs were assessed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). General linear and mixed models were used to assess the effect of the MI type, bone density and deflection on the evaluated outcomes. Results: The IT of Ti-MIs was 1.1 Ncm greater than that obtained for the SS-MIs (p= 0.018). The IT for MIs inserted in 40 PCF test blocks was 5.4 Ncm greater than that for those inserted in 20 PCF test blocks (p < 0.001). SS-MIs inserted in higher density bone (40 PCF) had significantly higher flexural strength than the other groups, at 2 mm (98.7 ± 5.1 Ncm), 3 mm (112.0 ± 3.9 Ncm) and 4 mm (120.0 ± 3.4 Ncm) of deflection (p< 0.001). SEM evidenced fractures in the Ti-MIs. EDS revealed incorporation of 18% of C and 2.06% of O in the loaded SS-MIs, and 3.91% of C in the loaded Ti-MIs. Conclusions: Based on the findings of this in vitro study, it seems that SS-MIs offer sufficient stability and exhibit greater mechanical strength, compared to Ti-MIs when inserted into higher density bone.


RESUMO Objetivo: O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar o torque de inserção (TI), a resistência flexural (RF) e as alterações de superfície em mini-implantes ortodônticos de aço inoxidável (MIs-Ai) e de liga de titânio (MIs-Ti). Métodos: Vinte e quatro MIs (2 x 10 mm; MIs-Ai, n = 12; MIs-Ti, n = 12) foram inseridos em blocos de osso artificial de densidades de 20 lb/ft3 (20 PCF) e 40 lb/ft3 (40 PCF). O torque máximo de inserção foi registrado por meio de um torquímetro digital. A resistência flexural foi avaliada nas deflexões de 2, 3 e 4 mm. Topografia de superfície e composição química dos MIs foram avaliadas por Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV) e Espectroscopia de Energia Dispersiva de Raios X (EDS). Modelos lineares gerais e mistos foram utilizados para avaliar o efeito do tipo de MI, da densidade óssea e da deflexão nos desfechos avaliados. Resultados: O TI dos MIs-Ti foi 1,1 Ncm maior do que o obtido para os MIs-Ai (P = 0,018). O TI para MIs inseridos em blocos de teste de 40 PCF foi 5,4 Ncm maior do que para aqueles inseridos em blocos de teste 20 PCF (p < 0,001). MIs-Ai inseridos em osso de maior densidade (40 PCF) apresentaram resistência flexural significativamente maior do que outros grupos, em deflexões de 2 mm (98,7 ± 5,1 Ncm), 3 mm (112,0 ± 3,9 Ncm) e 4 mm (120,0 ± 3,4 Ncm) (p < 0,001). A MEV evidenciou fraturas nos MIs-Ti. A EDS revelou incorporação de 18% de C e 2,06% de O nos MIs-Ai e 3,91% de C nos MIs-Ti, ambos submetidos a testes mecânicos. Conclusões: Com base nos resultados desse estudo in vitro, os MIs-Ai aparentam oferecer adequada estabilidade e maior resistência mecânica, em comparação aos MIs-Ti, quando inseridos em osso de maior densidade.

Abstract The objective of this study was to analyze the influence of insertion torque, bone type, and peri-implant bone loss on implant stability quotient (ISQ) of cylindrical external hexagon (EH) and Morse Taper (MT) implants. Forty-four single implants were placed in the edentulous areas of 20 patients who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Immediately after implant placement (t1) and after osseointegration (four and six months for mandible and maxilla, respectively) (t2), insertion torque, resonance frequency, and peri-implant bone loss were measured using probing depths and digital periapical radiography. A significant difference was noted in the ISQ values between t1 and t2 in type III bone for EH and MT implants. No significant difference in bone loss values was observed when comparing bone types for EH or MT in all evaluated sites. Based on marginal bone loss assessed using radiography, there was no significant difference between the MT and EH groups. A positive correlation between torque and ISQ t1 value was observed for MT (correlation: 0.439; p = 0.041) and EH (correlation: 0.461; p = 0.031) implants. For EH and MT implants, the greater the insertion torque, the greater was the ISQ value (moderately positive correlation). A weak negative correlation was found between bone type and ISQ t1 for MT implants. Contrarily, no correlation was observed between bone type and ISQ t1 for EH implants. In all cases, bone loss around the implants was clinically normal.

Este trabalho visou relatar o caso clínico de um paciente padrão III com mordida cruzada anterior, através de um tratamento compensatório com o uso de bráquetes que geram torques resistentes nos incisivos. O paciente JPCN, 42 anos, leucoderma, gênero masculino, procurou a clínica ortodôntica com a queixa principal de mordida cruzada anterior. Na análise extrabucal, observou-se a presença de padrão horizontal, simetria facial, maxila deficiente, ângulo nasolabial fechado, presença de selamento labial passivo e perfil côncavo com o lábio inferior à frente do superior. A prescrição utilizada foi a biofuncional, apresentado 0° de torque nos incisivos superiores e 10° nos incisivos inferiores. Foram realizados o alinhamento e nivelamento, mecânica de acentuação da curva de Spee no arco superior e reversão no arco inferior simultaneamente aos elásticos intermaxilares. Ao final do tratamento, foram observados correção da relação anteroposterior e intercuspidação dentária, trespasse horizontal e vertical normais, linhas médias coincidentes e selamento labial passivo. Concluiu-se que a utilização de torques resistentes nos incisivos gerados pelo uso de bráquetes da técnica biofuncional foi eficiente para manter uma boa inclinação desses dentes durante a correção damá oclusão de Classe III com o uso de elásticos intermaxilares (AU)


This study aimed to report the clinical case of a patient with pattern III with anterior crossbite, through a compensatory treatment with the use of brackets that generate resistant torques in the incisors. Patient JPCN, 42 years old, caucasian, male, came to the orthodontic clinic with the main complaint of anterior crossbite. In the extraoral analysis, it was observed the presence of a horizontal pattern, facial symmetry, deficient maxilla, closed nasolabial angle, presence of passive lip seal, and concave profile with the lower lip in front of the upper. The prescription used was the biofunctional, with 0° of torque on the upper incisors and 10° on the lower incisors. Alignment and leveling, orthodontic mechanics of Spee curve accentuation in the maxillary arch and reversal in the mandibular arch were performed simultaneously with intermaxillary elastics. At the end of the treatment, Class III correction, correction of the anteroposterior relationship and dental intercuspation, normal overbite and overjet, coinci-dent midlines and passive lip seal were observed. It was concluded that the use of resistant torques on the incisors promoted by the use of biofunctional technique brackets was efficient to maintain a good inclination of these teeth during the correction of Class III malocclusion with the use of intermaxillary elastics (AU)

The aims of the present study are to investigate the magnitude and direction of the elbow torque asymmetries in manual wheelchair users and to verify the agreement levels of the asymmetry's direction between different velocities and contraction modes in the isokinetic test. The sample was composed of 14 manual wheelchair users (four women, 10 men). The peak torque of the elbow flexors and extensors were measured on the dominant and non-dominant limbs, using a set of concentric/eccentric contractions at speeds of 60°â€…s-1 and 180°â€…s-1. Asymmetries were calculated by a specific equation, and the levels of agreement of the asymmetry's direction were calculated using Kappa coefficient. The main results showed a large variability in the magnitude of the asymmetries, ranging from -73.1% (ND) to 59.9% (D) between participants. The agreement levels of the elbow flexors and extensors between the different contraction modes were great (k = 0.71-0.85) for most of the velocities [except for flexors of 60°â€…s-1 (k = 0.29)], but the agreement levels were only slight to fair (k = 0.16-0.31) for most of the contraction modes when comparing between velocities [except for flexors eccentric (k = 0.71)]. In conclusion, the elbow torque asymmetries are highly variable between subjects in terms of magnitude. In addition, in general, the limb favored by the asymmetry is the same when comparing between velocities, but not when comparing between contraction modes.

Introduction: Torque teno virus (TTV) has been pointed as an endogenous marker of immune function, the objective of this study was to investigate the TTV viral load in plasma and saliva of cirrhotic individuals and correlate it with clinical characteristics. Methods: Blood, saliva, clinical data from records and laboratory tests were collected from 72 cirrhotic patients. Plasma and saliva were submitted to real-time polymerase chain reaction for quantification of TTV viral load. Results: The majority of the patients presented decompensated cirrhosis (59.7%) and 47.2% had alterations in the white blood series. TTV was identified in 28 specimens of plasma (38.8%) and in 67 specimens of saliva (93.0%), with median values of TTV copies/mL of 90.6 in plasma and 245.14 in saliva. All the patients who were positive for TTV in plasma were also positive in saliva, with both fluids having a moderately positive correlation for the presence of TTV. There was no correlation between TTV viral load, either in plasma or in saliva, and any of the variables studied. Conclusion: TTV is more frequently found and in greater amount in the saliva than in the plasma of cirrhotic patients. There was no correlation between TTV viral load and clinical parameters.

This study aimed to verify the time course recovery of muscle edema within the quadriceps femoris and functional performance after lower-body single- and multi-joint exercises. For this within-participant unilateral and contralateral experimental design, fourteen untrained young males performed a unilateral knee extension exercise (KE), and a unilateral leg press (LP) exercise in a counterbalanced order. At pre-, post-, 24 h, 48 h, 72 h, and 96 h after exercise, the peak torque (PT), unilateral countermovement jump (uCMJ) performance, and rectus femoris (RF) and vastus lateralis (VL) muscle thicknesses were recorded in both legs. The PT decreased immediately after (p = 0.01) both exercises (KE and LP) and was fully recovered 24 h after KE (p = 0.38) and 48 h after LP (p = 0.68). Jump height and power, in the uCMJ, followed the same PT recovery pattern after both exercises. However, vertical stiffness (Kvert) was not affected at any time point after both protocols. The RF thickness increased after both exercises (p = 0.01) and was fully restored 48 h after KE (p = 0.86) and 96 h after LP (p = 1.00). The VL thickness increased after both exercises (p = 0.01) and was fully restored 24 h after LP (p = 1.00) and 48 h after KE (p = 1.00). The LP exercise, compared to KE, induced more prolonged impairment of functional performance and delayed recovery of RF muscle edema. However, the VL edema-induced muscle swelling recovery was delayed after the KE exercise. The different recovery kinetics between functional performance and muscle damage should be taken into consideration depending on the objectives of the next training sessions.

RESUMO

This paper presents the development of an instrumented exoskeleton with baropodometry, electromyography, and torque sensors. The six degrees of freedom (Dof) exoskeleton has a human intention detection system based on a classifier of electromyographic signals coming from four sensors placed in the muscles of the lower extremity together with baropodometric signals from four resistive load sensors placed at the front and rear parts of both feet. In addition, the exoskeleton is instrumented with four flexible actuators coupled with torque sensors. The main objective of the paper was the development of a lower limb therapy exoskeleton, articulated at hip and knees to allow the performance of three types of motion depending on the detected user's intention: sitting to standing, standing to sitting, and standing to walking. In addition, the paper presents the development of a dynamical model and the implementation of a feedback control in the exoskeleton.

To examine the effect of ankle position (i.e. gastrocnemius muscle length) on training outcomes during leg curl exercise, we recruited untrained and trained healthy adults to participate in two separate experiments. In Experiment 1, we studied the acute influence of ankle position on knee flexor myoelectric (EMG) activity during leg curl exercise in a group of trained and a separate group of untrained adults. In Experiment 2, we studied the effects of ankle position on knee flexors muscle thickness and torque across a 10-week training protocol in trained adults. We hypothesized that leg curl exercise with the ankle in a plantarflexed position would enhance EMG activity, muscular strength, and hamstrings muscle thickness. We randomized the legs within a person to perform leg curl exercise with one in a plantarflexed position and the other in a dorsiflexed position. Experiment 1 revealed no significant differences between ankle positions in the EMG activity of hamstring muscle in either group (all p > 0.05). Experiment 2 revealed a significant pre- to post-intervention increase in biceps femoris long head (BFLH) muscle thickness (p = 0.026) and isometric torque (p = 0.03), but there were no significant effects of the ankle position (p = 0.596) or interaction between ankle position and timepoint for these variables (p = 0.420). In sum, the ankle position did not have acute effects on hamstrings EMG activity, nor did it affect strength and hypertrophy adaptations after 10-weeks of leg curl exercise training. Interestingly, however, the limb which performed leg curl exercise in a dorsiflexed position performed a higher total training volume.Highlights Different ankle positions (i.e. dorsiflexion or plantarflexion) do not affect hamstrings EMG activity during prone leg curl exercise.Different ankle positions show similar adaptation in strength and hypertrophy of biceps femoris long head after 10 weeks of training.Training in the plantarflexed position may be useful for time-constrained individuals, allowing similar training adaptations with smaller training volume.

This study aimed to evaluate the immediate effect of Dynamic TapeTM (DT) on hip muscle activation and torque and on lower limb kinematics. Forty-five healthy, recreationally active women were randomly assigned to three groups: 1) submitted to the application of DT in the active form in the gluteus medius (GMed) muscle (BG; n = 15), 2) submitted to the application of DT in the placebo form in the GMed muscle (PG; n = 15), and 3) not submitted to any intervention (CG; n = 15). Participants were evaluated for GMed and gluteus maximus (GMax) muscle activation in a maximal voluntary isometric contraction, simultaneously with the assessment of the hip abductor and extensor torques, as well as during two functional tasks - single leg squat (SLS) and jump landing + maximum vertical jump (VJ) - simultaneously with a 2-D kinematic assessment of the lower limb. After DT application in BG, there was a significant decrease in the hip abductor time to peak torque (P = 0.004), hip extensor torque (P = 0.02), excursion to hip adduction (P = 0.007), and to knee flexion (P = 0.02) during the SLS, as well as in GMed activation during VJ (P < 0.05). DT was able to reduce GMed activation and modify lower limb torque and kinematics.

BACKGROUND: Abutment screw loosening is a common complication of implant supported prostheses, especially for single crowns. In engineering, anaerobic adhesives (AA) are used to provide chemical locking between screw surfaces, but their application in implantology remains unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this article is to evaluate, in vitro, the effect of AA on counter-torque of abutment screws for cemented prosthesis on dental implants with external hexagon connection (EHC) and conical connection (CC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sample was composed by 60 specimens, 30 dental implants with EHC and 30 with CC. Abutments (transmucosal 3 mm straight universal abutment) were installed without AA (control group) or with application of AA with two different adhesive strength: medium strength (LOCTITE® 242) and high strength (LOCTITE® 277). The specimens were subjected to mechanical cycling at 37°C, with a load setting of 133 N, a 1.3 Hz frequency, and 1 200 000 cycles. The abutments were removed, and the counter-torque values were registered. Screws and implants were inspected using a stereomicroscope to verify the presence of residual adhesive and damage the internal structures. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and comparison tests (p < 0.05). RESULTS: Comparing to the torque of installation, the medium strength AA kept the counter-torque values for CC implants and the high strength AA kept the counter-torque for EHC implants and increased for CC implants. In the intergroup comparisons, control group presented significantly lower counter-torque values than other groups, both for EHC and CC implants. High strength AA presented similar results to medium strength AA in the EHC implants, but in the CC implants presented higher counter-torque values. Damage in threads was more frequent in the groups that received high strength AA. CONCLUSION: The use of AA increased the counter-torque of abutment screws, both in implants with EHC and CC.

A common pre-season injury prevention assessment conducted by professional football clubs is the hamstring-to-quadriceps (H:Q) strength ratio calculated by peak torque (PT). However, it is debatable whether players that present low pre-season H:Q ratios are more susceptible to further sustaining in-season hamstring strain injuries (HSI). Based upon retrospective data from a Brazilian Serie A football squad, a particular season came to our attention as ten out of seventeen (~59%) professional male football players sustained HSI. Therefore, we examined the pre-season H:Q ratios of these players. H:Q conventional (CR) and functional (FR) ratios, and the respective knee extensor/flexor PT from the limbs of players further sustaining in-season HSI (injured players, IP) were compared to the proportional number of dominant/non-dominant limbs from uninjured players (UP) in the squad. FR and CR were ~18-22% lower (p < 0.01), whereas quadriceps concentric PT was ~25% greater for IP than UP (p = 0.002). Low scores of FR and CR were correlated (p < 0.01) with high levels of quadriceps concentric PT (r = -0.66 to -0.77). In conclusion, players who sustained in-season HSI had lower pre-season FR and CR compared to UP, which appears to be associated with higher levels of quadriceps concentric torque than hamstring concentric or eccentric torque.

Introduction: The consensus among researchers is that early failure of dental implants is due to the lack of primary stability and compressive stress on the peri-implant bone that exceeds the physiological tolerance. Objective: The objective of this work is to propose a new methodology to quantify bone stress during dental implant insertion and to correlate it with primary stability. Materials and Methods: Titanium dental implants with a diameter of 3.75 mm were inserted in a 3.35 mm hole of a synthetic bone of polyurethane (PU) foam with a density of 20 PCF (0.32 g/cm3). During insertion, the insertion torque was measured with a digital torque meter and the bone strain was measured with strain gages located at 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 mm from the coronal region. Results: The tests showed that the compressive strain is maximum in the third coronal region and decreases in the apical direction. The data also showed that there is a relationship between strain, insertion torque, and the primary stability of dental implants. Conclusion: The stress and strain on the bone progressively decreased from the coronal to the apical third. The maximum compressive stress (0.42 MPa) during insertion of the implant did not exceed bone strength. Insertion of 3.75 mm implants in type D2 bone with a 3.35 mm hole provides adequate primary stability without excessive compression of the bone. Clinical Significance: For the implant-bone combination used in the present study, the compressive stress generated during implant insertion did not exceed the physiological limit of cortical and medullary bone to the point of impairing osseointegration.
