RESUMO

The enhanced multi-objective symbolic discretization for time series (eMODiTS) uses an evolutionary process to identify the appropriate discretization scheme in the Time Series Classification (TSC) task. It discretizes using a unique alphabet cut for each word segment. However, this kind of scheme has a higher computational cost. Therefore, this study implemented surrogate models to minimize this cost. The general procedure is summarized below.•The K-nearest neighbor for regression, the support vector regression model, and the Ra- dial Basis Functions neural networks were implemented as surrogate models to estimate the objective values of eMODiTS, including the discretization process.•An archive-based update strategy was introduced to maintain diversity in the training set.•Finally, the model update process uses a hybrid (fixed and dynamic) approach for the surrogate model's evolution control.

RESUMO

Using the example of the military regime in Argentina (1976-1983) and relevant archival materials, this article demonstrates the prerequisite of exalted language in constructing an enemy and how a discursive 'machine of the same' was put into operation. The author argues that what made this operation unique is its structure of repetition that stimulated "the tendency to merge" what is "foreigner-to-the-ego", and the "enemy outside" into a single concept in the Argentinian national psyche. As a theoretical lens, the author examines the military regime's language through Freud's understanding of groups and civilization and Laplanche's proposition that cultural narratives in the form of mytho-symbolic explanations help us translate the sexual drive and offer a "solution" to the helplessness of the infant-adult.The author further claims that at other times a cultural narration functions as an anti-translation device when set against the emergence of a new net of significations. The nation's founding narrative of an Occidental-Spanish-Catholic "being" that first effaced its indigenous origins and then its Arabic and Jewish inheritance was brought back by the military regime as a mytho-symbolic narration that formed a shield against the repressed remnants of the enigmatic message pressing for a new translation.

Abstract This article aims to map the global scientific production on social or cultural representations and breast cancer in Public Health and discuss how it is presented in the literature. We conducted a scoping review guided by the question: "How are cultural or social representations in the context of breast cancer described in the global scientific Public Health production?". We searched for works in five scientific literature sources and included 45 studies. The analytical process followed the content analysis technique in the thematic modality. The analyzed collection can be thematized into the following categories: (1) Compromised body image and interactions, (2) Spirituality, (3) Loss of control over life, (4) Going on with life, and (5) Association with ethnic-racial issues. Despite advances in biomedicine, we observed that representations of breast cancer still have metaphors associated with cancer in the last century. We conclude that, among other aspects, care for women with breast cancer cannot be guided only by biomedical and epidemiological approaches since this disease is traversed by knowledge that competes with these approaches.

RESUMO

The phenomenon of world aging is not foreign to indigenous communities. In the last few years, research about these communities around the world has increased, but aging in indigenous towns still has not been studied widely. The purpose of this research is to interpret the meaning of old age in two indigenous communities from the Colombian Andean-Amazon region (the Inga and Kamëntsa) to reinforce the relevance of the local sociocultural context within the configuration of the meaning of old age and to emphasize the importance of considering particular regional characteristics for the design of policies and interventions aiming to recognize and integrate indigenous populations. This is a qualitative study with an interactionism-symbolism approach. In total, six indigenous people older than 60 years from two ancestral communities from the Colombian Andean-Amazon region participated in the in-depth interviews. Data analysis was carried out in three moments: discovery, coding, and relativization of the information. The results show that old age means wisdom, "I am wise," which is supported in the cosmology and the trajectory of life, reinforces the identity and autonomy, and allows them to be agents in the dynamics of their communities from the "I do," in other words, their roles as builders of the family-society and as guards of ancestral knowledge. The loss of this knowledge and the elements that it is composed of uproot them and put them at risk of disappearing as individuals and as a collective. In conclusion, the meaning of old age in these communities is not centered on a determinate age; you are not old, you are wise, and as such, they play a central role in their communities. Moreover, wisdom is built in parallel with their cosmology and assigns them the task of safekeeping ancestral knowledge. In order to do this, they use oral tradition as a tool, words that are born in their territories, travel in a nonlinear timeline, and get strengthened by the community while also protecting it and building it. Knowing what aging means for Indigenous communities can facilitate to the development of policies and initiatives and to provide culturally appropriate and effective programs.

RESUMO

Taking into account the complexity of the human brain dynamics, the appropriate characterization of any brain state is a challenge not easily met. Actually, even the discrimination of simple behavioral tasks, such as resting with eyes closed or eyes open, represents an intricate problem and many efforts have been and are being made to overcome it. In this work, the aforementioned issue is carefully addressed by performing multiscale analyses of electroencephalogram records with the permutation Jensen-Shannon distance. The influence that linear and nonlinear temporal correlations have on the discrimination is unveiled. Results obtained lead to significant conclusions that help to achieve an improved distinction between these resting brain states.

RESUMO

Objective: to understand the meaning attributed by men to the experience of caring for their family member with cancer and to develop a substantive theory that represents the experience of men caring for their family member with cancer. Method: this is qualitative research guided by the methodological framework of Grounded Theory and the precepts of Symbolic Interactionism. A form with identification and interview data was used. The analysis followed the substantive and theoretical coding stages. Results: 12 male caregivers of their family member with cancer participated. The constant comparative analysis of the data allowed the creation of a substantive theory "Experiencing the care of a family member with cancer: men as a caregivers" explaining the experience that has as its central category "The love that drives care", representing the symbolic actions and attitudes of men living in the context of illness due to cancer and care Conclusion: the theory allowed us to understand feelings, perceptions, ways of acting and facing the diagnosis, providing care, recognizing difficulties and learning from the situations that arise, making explicit the interactional processes and symbolic elements present and how these influence male caregivers in their actions and attitudes.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Objective: to learn the meanings attributed to pregnancy loss by women with Lupus. Method: qualitative research, based on Symbolic Interactionism and Grounded Theory. Data collection took place between January and August 2022 through in-depth interviews. Data analysis went through the stages of initial and focused coding. Results: seventeen women participated. The central phenomenon "The climb to motherhood: falls and overcoming" was constructed, consisting of three categories: "Falling to the ground during the climb: the experience of pregnancy loss"; "Getting up and following the path: new attempts to conceive"; and "Remembering the journey: meanings attributed to pregnancy losses". Final considerations: experiencing pregnancy is, analogously, like climbing a mountain, where obstacles need to be overcome to reach the summit. The experience of pregnancy loss is seen as complex, especially when there is fragility in healthcare and a lack of awareness regarding feelings of loss and grief.

ABSTRACT Objective: to understand the meaning of acupuncture from the point of view of this health practice's user. Method: this is a descriptive, exploratory study with a qualitative approach, using the Symbolic Interactionism theoretical-methodological framework, carried out in a private acupuncture clinic located in Minas Gerais' Western Health Macroregion. The data was obtained through individual interviews, with a semi-structured script, drawn up based on the objectives and theoretical framework, consisting of a characterization of the research participants and guiding questions. The data was collected between April 2022 and January 2023 and analyzed using content analysis. Results: a total of 25 people were interviewed, the majority of whom were female and had undergone acupuncture for between 2 months and 10 years. After analysis, four categories related to the patient's view of acupuncture treatment were revealed: 1) Oriental technique with many benefits; 2) The health professional and acupuncture; 3) Acupuncture and other techniques; 4) The context of the search for acupuncture. In the light of symbolic interactionism, it was possible to understand that the meanings of acupuncture underwent changes during the care process and the influence of the professionals involved in providing health care. Conclusion: understanding the meanings of acupuncture in the patient's health is of paramount importance in order to value the symbolism of the technique for the patient and to use the care space as an environment for comprehensive care, education and promotion of health and quality of life.

Abstract This study investigate the absence of early play, that is, the deprivation of playful exchanges with caregivers in the nursery environment, and its impact on the psychic development of infants. Results from a longitudinal study with five infants, from 8 months to 4 years of age, collected by the IRDI, MPPE and AP3 instruments showed that the absence of early play results in the impoverishment of further symbolic play and in obstacles to the child's subjectivation process.

Background: While the traditional method of teaching consists of repetition and memorization, the constructivist theory proposes independent discovery and free play. The cultural-historical approach, on the other hand, does not insist on the early introduction of formal mathematics as implicit or explicit knowledge. According to this outlook, important psychological developmental is necessary for the child before he/she can learn mathematics in primary school. Objective: To present a methodology for organizing the play activity of children of preschool age by introducing symbolic means on the materialized and perceptual levels as an essential aspect of preparation for learning mathematical concepts in primary school. Design: The experiment consisted in pedagogical work in the online modality by the authors at a private college in the city of Puebla, Mexico. Eighteen children from three levels of preschool education (from three to six years old) participated in 45-minute sessions three times per week. There were six children from each preschool level. Results: It was shown that playing with roles online allows children at least partially to include different symbolic means in their activity. This allows the children not only to satisfy their curiosity and be positively engaged in the topic of the play, but also to develop symbolic functions as preparation for intellectual actions with numerical content in primary school. Conclusion: The article shows a feasible way to organize preschool play with roles online and thus to scaffold the formation of children's imagination and ability to use symbolic means, which is important for future learning. The cultural-historical approach offers useful guidelines here, although more research is needed to support the development of children's symbolic function within math-specific activity, based on activity theory applied to learning.

RESUMO

The scholarship seeking to explain the ineffectiveness of violence against women (VAW) laws has focused on the lack of resources or will to implement these laws. Less attention has been given to how these laws are crafted and positioned in the legal hierarchy, which may undermine them from the start. This article focuses on four cases from Central America, a region where fifty-five laws to protect women from violence were passed between 1960 and 2018, yet VAW continues. It finds that the legal positioning and language of these laws prioritize family unity while undermining women's rights to protection; thus, these laws fail by design. The article identifies four legal placements that delay (El Salvador), undermine (Honduras), diminish (Nicaragua), or render abstract (Guatemala) the effectiveness of VAW laws in the context of penal and judicial codes. This work has direct policy implications and broader relevance beyond the cases examined here.

The novel Los hermanos Cuervo, by the Colombian Andrés Felipe Solano, underlines, through parody, the illusion of stability of the language and of the subject in which a symbolic violence is amalgamated, naturalized in the family, school and the city. This subjectivity resonates in a territory rigidly divided into socioeconomic strata, symbolically and imaginarily amalgamated in classist and deeply exclusive cultural narratives, organized around the pair of opposites: all or nothing

Currently, the mission of media is to provide information, using appropriate language and due caution to avoid incurring symbolic violence, particularly in the field of health. In this regard, a study has been conducted on the stereotypes, prejudices, stigmas, and discrimination faced by the LGTBIQ+ community in relation to Monkeypox. The main objective of this research is to raise awareness about the social construction of identities and avoid inconsistent attributions, in order to promote an inclusive social space and establish a framework for private, government, or supranational policies and initiatives. To this end, empirical-propositional analytical-reflective techniques and interpretative phenomenological analysis have been used, systematically reviewing three databases: ScIELO, SCOPUS, and Web of Science. It is concluded that the LGTBIQ+ community has historically been subject to symbolic violence, greatly exacerbated by media. Therefore, it is necessary to ensure a fair and respectful representation of this community to achieve an inclusive and equitable society. Consequently, further investigation into the imaginaries, stereotypes, prejudices, stigmas, and discrimination towards the LGTBIQ+ community in specific populations is suggested. This study contributes to understanding the issues faced by the LGTBIQ+ community and provides important recommendations for advancing towards a more fair and respectful society.

RESUMO

Brand loyalty is one of the main objectives of marketing, due to its impact on the sustainability of organisations; however, the explanation of how this type of loyalty is built in the sports industry is complex, due to the way it is organised. Traditionally, brand loyalty in this industry has been explained by satisfaction, service quality, commitment and trust, thus other variables that have been analysed from the marketing field have not been included in the models developed for the sports industry. The aim of this article was to explore the relationship between symbolic consumption as a non-traditional predictor of brand loyalty in the sports industry, more specifically in the football club segment. For this purpose, a quantitative cross-sectional study was defined, with a non-probabilistic sampling. To test the proposed relationship, modelling by means of partial least squares structural equations was chosen. The results showed that symbolic consumption is positively related to brand loyalty in the sports industry in the football club segment, with a large effect size. This study becomes a starting point for scholars who wish to further explore the relationship between symbolic consumption and brand loyalty in the context of sport. Likewise, for marketing professionals in the sports industry, it suggests the importance of symbolic consumption for the design of strategies that enable the creation of brand loyalty in consumers in the case of football clubs. In this sense, marketing professionals should seek to create advertising and promotional campaigns that appeal to strengthen the relationship of the sports consumer with their social groups based on the actual and ideal self-concept, as lifestyle.

RESUMO

In the basic verbal task from Piaget, when a relation of the form if A > B and B > C is given, a logical inference A > C is expected. This process is called transitive inference (TI). The adapted version for animals involves the presentation of a simultaneous discrimination between stimuli pairs. In this way, when A+B-, B+C-, C+D-, D+E- is trained, a B>D preference is expected, assuming that if A>B>C>D>E, then B>D. This effect has been widely reported using several procedures and different species. In the current experiment TI was evaluated employing probabilistic reinforcement. Thus, for the positive stimuli a .7 probability was administered and for the negative stimuli a .3 probability was administered. Under this arrangement the relation A>B>C>D>E is still allowed, but TI becomes more difficult. Five pigeons (Columba Livia) were exposed to the mentioned arrangement. Only one pigeon reached the criterion in C+D- discrimination, whereas the remaining did not. Only the one who successfully solved C+D- was capable of learning TI, whereas the others were not. Additionally, it was found that correct response ratios did not predict BD performance. Consequently, probabilistic reinforcement disrupted TI, but some positional ordering was retained in the test. The results suggest that TI might be affected by associative strength but also by the positional ordering of the stimuli. The discussion addresses the two main accounts of TI: the associative account and the ordinal representation account.

(analytical) This study explores the institutional practices that support or hinder the rights of children and young people in the child protection system in El Salvador. Using an institutional ethnography approach, 61 individuals who worked directly or indirectly in the child protection system were interviewed. The findings highlight a lack of manuals that establish concrete practices in accordance with the application of the Law of Comprehensive Protection for Children and Youth, which reduces the effectiveness of the country's child protection system. Through an analytical approach based on symbolic interactionism, this study explored how the individual interpretations of the law, or lack thereof, combine with socioeconomic disadvantages to create difficulties for rural child protection institutions in terms of accessing operational resources.

Abstract Shared reading is a significant and frequent activity in early childhood. However, the interventions in this kind of activities by babies and infants under one-year have been little explored. The main objective of this work was to describe 9-month-old babies' interventions in reading situations with their mothers at Argentinian homes. The focus of the analysis was babies' actions during reading with their mothers. Ten mothers filmed shared reading sessions with their babies. Then we transcribed and analyzed babies' interventions in three levels. First, we classified the interventions in: responsive action, spontaneous action, responsive vocalization, spontaneous vocalization, responsive action + vocalization, spontaneous action + vocalization. Isolated vocalizations were rare. The babies performed mostly spontaneous actions (with or without vocalizations). Responsive actions were less frequent (with or without vocalizations). Second, we classified babies' actions (with or without vocalizations) in 1-conventional, like turn the page, point to the book, put the book in reading position, 2-manipulative, like bite, shake, put the book in the mouth, open and close the book, try to grab/suck/ touch objects represented in pictures, 3- other actions- actions not oriented to books, like shake another object present in the interaction or looking to some object or person outside the scene. We found that babies' actions were mainly manipulative. Finally, we categorized manipulative actions in 1- unspecific actions, like bite, shake, put the book in the mouth, open and close the book, and 2- pictures-oriented ones, like try to grab, suck, touch objects present in pictures. Unspecific actions predominated. Findings show sensory motor babies in exploration. Nevertheless, the presence of conventional actions and picture-oriented actions are signs of an incipient symbolic development. That is, babies use books conventionally and recognize pictures as symbolic objects. In sum, shared reading is one of the richest scenarios for early symbolic development. In this context babies and children access to diverse representational systems (words, pictures, numbers, letters). This activity allows children to development their symbolic potential in relevant social contexts.

RESUMO

AIMS: To evaluate the heart rate fragmentation (HRF) of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients and its relationship with heart rate variability (HRV) indices. METHODS: One hundred sixty-four men, aged 47-57 years were retrospectively analyzed from a database. Participants were T2DM (n = 82) and apparently healthy (n = 82). R-R interval time series recorded by electrocardiogram were collected at the supine position for 10 to 15 min. From HRF, the percentage of inflection points (PIP), percentage of words with zero, one, two, or three inflections points (W0, W1, W2, W3), and percentage with only type hard, soft, or mixed inflections points type (WH, WS, WM) were quantified. RESULTS: T2DM presented higher PIP, WS, WM and W3, while WH and W1 was lower compared with healthy (p < 0.05). Moreover, a positive moderate correlation was found between WH and root mean square of the successive R-R differences (RMSSD) and high frequency (HF) indices. In contrast, a negative moderate correlation was found between WS and WM with RMSSD and HF indices. CONCLUSIONS: T2DM have increased fragmentation patterns, and words grouped by inflection type are more closely related to HRV. The HRF approach might be useful to assess heart rate dynamic abnormalities in males with type 2 diabetes.

RESUMO

Interval-valued data have been commonly encountered in practice, and Symbolic Data Analysis provides a solution to the statistical treatment of these data. Regression analysis for interval-valued symbolic data is a topic that has been widely investigated in the literature of symbolic data analysis, and several models from different paradigms have been proposed. There are basic regression assumptions, and it is essential to validate them. This paper introduces an approach to check interval regression model adequacy based on residual analysis. Concepts of ordinary and standardized interval residual are presented, and graphical analysis of these residuals is also proposed. To show the usefulness of the proposed approach, an application for estimating school dropout in the scenario of Brazilian municipalities is performed. We observed some outliers from the interval residuals analysis, and interval robust regression models are more suitable for estimating school dropout.

RESUMO

Among Puerto Ricans, support for U.S. statehood (i.e. the complete annexation of Puerto Rico as the 51st state of the United States) has been linked to an internalized sense of inferiority, colonial system justification and political conservatism. However, no research has explored this question from the perspective of U.S. Americans. We analyse the role that the dual colonial ideologies of historical negation (of colonial injustices) and symbolic exclusion (of the colonial subjects) have in explaining support for Puerto Rico's statehood and other political status options for Puerto Rico among U.S. Americans, applying a decolonial adaptation of the Dark Duo Model of Post-Colonial Ideology (DDM). Confirmatory factor analyses validate the factor structure of our adaptation of the DDM scale in an MTurk sample (N = 435) and two student samples (N = 578; N = 381). Latent profile analyses uncover two distinct ideological groups that tend to support Puerto Rican statehood: a 'pro-egalitarian' group committed to both cultural inclusion and material aid for Puerto Rico and a 'neo-colonial' group equally open to cultural inclusion but opposed to material aid. We discuss how symbolic cultural politics, not an egalitarian commitment to material aid aimed at redressing colonial injustices, underlie support for the annexation of Puerto Rico among a significant group of U.S. Americans.
