The global market of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.) is continuously growing and, consequently, demands greater productivity from the agricultural sector. The use of biofertilizers facilitates plant growth by making essential nutrients available to crops or providing resistance against different abiotic and biotic factors. The strains Bacillus safensis T052-76 and Bacillus velezensis T149-19 have previously been inoculated in the sweet potato cultivar Ourinho, showing positive effects on plant shoot growth and inhibiting the phytopathogen Plenodomus destruens. To elucidate the effects of these strains on sweet potato growth, four different cultivars of sweet potato were selected: Capivara, IAPAR 69, Rosinha de Verdan and Roxa. The plants were grown in pots in a greenhouse and inoculated with the combined strains according to a randomized block design. A control (without the inoculation of both strains) was also used. A slight positive effect of the inoculation of the two Bacillus strains was observed on the aerial parts of some of the cultivars. An increase in the fresh weight of the sweet potatoes of the inoculated plants was obtained, varying from 2.7 to 11.4 %. The number of sweet potatoes obtained from the inoculated cultivars IAPAR 69 and Roxa increased 15.2 % and 16.7 %, respectively. The rhizosphere soil of each cultivar was further sampled for DNA extraction, and the 16S rRNA gene metabarcoding technique was used to determine how the introduction of these Bacillus strains influenced the rhizosphere bacterial community. The bacterial communities of the four different cultivars were dominated by Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria and Firmicutes. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) revealed that the rhizosphere bacterial communities of plants inoculated with Bacillus strains were more similar to each other than to the bacterial communities of uninoculated plants. This study highlights the contribution of these Bacillus strains to the promotion of sweet potato growth.

This study aimed to extract and characterize the morphological, physicochemical, thermal, and rheological properties of the starches of native potatoes grown in the department of Puno. Among the varieties evaluated were sweet native potato varieties Imilla Negra (Solanum tuberosum spp. Andígena), Imilla Blanca (Solanum tuberosum spp. Andígena), Peruanita, Albina or Lomo (Solanum chaucha), and Sutamari, and the bitter potatoes Rucki or Luki (Solanum juzepczukii Buk), Locka (Solanum curtilobum), Piñaza (Solanum curtilobum), and Ocucuri (Sola-num curtilobum), acquired from the National Institute of Agrarian Innovation (INIA-Puno). The proximal composition, amylose content, and morphological, thermal, and rheological properties that SEM, DSC, and a rheometer determined, respectively, were evaluated, and the data obtained were statistically analyzed using a completely randomized design and then a comparison of means using Tukey's LSD test. The results show a significant difference in the proximal composition (p ≤ 0.05) concerning moisture content, proteins, fat, ash, and carbohydrates. Thus, the amylose content was also determined, ranging from 23.60 ± 0.10 to 30.33 ± 0.15%. The size morphology of the granules is 13.09-47.73 µm; for the thermal and rheological properties of the different varieties of potato starch, it is shown that the gelatinization temperature is in a range of 57 to 62 °C and, for enthalpy, between 3 and 5 J/g.

This study formulated sweet potato chips with powdered potentially probiotic Levilactobacillus brevis (SPLB) and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (SPLP) and evaluated their impacts on human intestinal microbiota during 48 h of in vitro colonic fermentation. L. brevis and L. plantarum kept high viable cell counts (> 6 log CFU/g) on sweet potato chips after freeze-drying and during 60 days of storage. SPLB and SPLP had satisfactory quality parameters during 60 days of storage. SPLB and SPLP increased the relative abundance of Lactobacillus ssp./Enterococcus spp. (3.84-10.22%) and Bifidobacterium spp. (3.25-12.45%) and decreased the relative abundance of Bacteroides spp./Prevotella spp. (8.56-2.16%), Clostridium histolyticum (8.23-2.33%), and Eubacterium rectale/Clostridium coccoides (8.07-1.33%) during 48 h of in vitro colonic fermentation. SPLB and SPLP achieved high positive prebiotic indexes (> 8.24), decreased pH values and sugar contents, and increased lactic acid and short-chain fatty acid production, proving selective stimulatory effects on beneficial bacterial groups forming the intestinal microbiota. The results showed that SPLB and SPLP have good stability and high viable cell counts of L. brevis and L. plantarum when stored under room temperature and caused positive impacts on human intestinal microbiota, making them potentially probiotic non-dairy snack options.

Andean tubers and tuberous roots have nutritional and medicinal properties transferred through ancestral generations. In this study, we aim to promote cultivation and consumption by developing a snack based on these crops. Corn grits were thoroughly mixed with sweet potato, mashua, and three varieties of oca flour (white, yellow, and red) in an 80:20 ratio, and a single-screw laboratory extruder was utilized to produce third-generation (3G) dried pellets. Microwave expansion was studied, and the dried 3G pellets and expanded snacks were characterized. The microwave expansion curves of the dried 3G pellets were adjusted to the Page, logarithmic, and Midilli-Kucuk models. During the characterization, the influence of the raw material composition was observed in sectional expansion, water content, water activity, water absorption, water solubility, swelling, optical and textural properties, and bioactive compounds. According to global color variation (mixture vs. expanded and dried vs. expanded) and bioactive compound analysis, the mashua suffered little chemical change or nutritional loss during the process. The extrusion process was shown to be an ideal method for manufacturing snacks from Andean tuber flours.

Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) is an economically important food crop that is grown primarily for its edible storage roots. Several researchers have consequently been conducting studies to increase sweet potato yield, and an important aspect of this research involves understanding how storage root initiation occurs. Although significant progress has been made, several challenges associated with studying this crop have resulted in lagging progress compared to other crops and thus sweet potato storage root initiation is not clearly understood. This article highlights the most important aspects of the hormone signalling processes during storage root initiation that needs to be investigated further and suggests candidate genes that should be prioritized for further study, based on their importance in storage organ formation in other crops. Lastly, ways of overcoming the challenges associated with studying this crop are suggested.

Ipomoea batatas has an enormous projection as functional food and it is an excellent source of anticancerous or chemopreventive substances. Plant tissue culture offers the possibility of inducing secondary metabolites production under controlled conditions and their projection for industrial purposes. To establish the state of knowledge regarding advances in polyphenols chemical elicitation from I. batatas and the possibility of producing potential anticancerous compounds in vitro culture systems, a bibliometric review and an analysis of information available until 2020 were made. Results showed that research field on which review was carried out is current and has a growing trend; however, sweet potato cell suspensions evaluation is scarce. Elicitation using compounds with hormonal effects represents a good alternative to increase phenolic acids production in this species. Advances in phenols elicitation from sweet potato cell suspensions will require search superior genotypes, and associating this knowledge with in vivoand in silico studies.


Ipomoea batatas tiene una enorme proyección como alimento funcional y es una excelente fuente de sustancias anticancerosas o quimiopreventivas. El cultivo de tejidos vegetales ofrece la posibilidad de inducir la producción de metabolitos secundarios en condiciones controladas y su proyección con fines industriales. Para establecer el estado del conocimiento sobre los avances en la elicitación química de polifenoles en I. batatas y la posibilidad de producir compuestos potencialmente anticancerosos en sistemas de cultivo in vitro, se realizó una revisión bibliométrica y un análisis de la información disponible hasta 2020. Los resultados mostraron que el campo de investigación en el que se realizó la revisión es actual y tiene una tendencia creciente; sin embargo, la evaluación de las suspensiones celulares de batata es escasa. La elicitación usando compuestos con efectos hormonales representa una buena alternativa para incrementar la producción de ácidos fenólicos en esta especie. Los avances en la obtención de fenoles a partir de suspensiones celulares de batata requerirán la búsqueda de genotipos superiores y la asociación de este conocimiento con estudios in vivo e in silico.

The consumption of readily digestible starch sources, such as corn, can negatively impact endocrine disorders related to hyperglycaemia in predisposing animals. In this sense, starch sources containing slowly digestible and resistant fractions can assist glycemic control. The present study analyzed the postprandial glycemic response and blood variables of rats fed with four extruded diets containing corn, brown rice, sweet potato and pea as the main starch source. Thirty-two male Wistar rats (90 days old) were divided into groups of eight animals each. The rats received one of the experimental diets for 30 days according to a completely randomised design. The glycemia was measured on the 29th and 30th days. The glycemia measured on the 29th day was analyzed at 0, 30, 60, 120 and 240 min after oral administration of 50% glucose solution. On the 30th day, the same protocol was repeated after providing 3 g of the experimental diet for each animal to obtain the glycemic curve. After the euthanasia on the 30th day, 7 ml of blood was collected via cardiac puncture for glycated haemoglobin (HBA1c), triglycerides, cholesterol, and aspartate and alanine aminotransferases analysis. Diets with pea and sweet potato provided lower glycemic index, average and maximum glycemia, and glycemic increment in relation to the other starch sources (p < 0.05). Animals fed with the corn diet had higher serum concentrations of triglycerides and HBA1c than the other treatments (p < 0.05). Results demonstrated that pea and sweet potato are interesting starch sources for the control of metabolic disorders related to glycemia.

Sweet potato virus disease (SPVD) is a global constraint to sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas) production, especially under intensive cultivation in the humid tropics such as East Africa. The objectives of this study were to develop a precision SPVD phenotyping protocol, to find new SPVD-resistant genotypes, and to standardize the first stages of screening for SPVD resistance. The first part of the protocol was based on enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay results for sweet potato chlorotic stunt virus (SPCSV) and sweet potato virus C (SPVC) with adjustments to a negative control (uninfected clone Tanzania) and was performed on a prebreeding population (VZ08) comprising 455 clones and 27 check clones graft inoculated under screenhouse conditions. The second part included field studies with 52 selected clones for SPCSV resistance from VZ08 and 8 checks. In screenhouse conditions, the resistant and susceptible check clones performed as expected; 63 clones from VZ08 exhibited lower relative absorbance values for SPCSV and SPVC than inoculated check Tanzania. Field experiments confirmed SPVD resistance of several clones selected by relative absorbance values (nine resistant clones in two locations; that is, 17.3% of the screenhouse selection), supporting the reliability of our method for SPVD-resistance selection. Two clones were promising, exhibiting high storage root yields of 28.7 to 34.9 t ha-1 and SPVD resistance, based on the proposed selection procedure. This modified serological analysis for SPVD-resistance phenotyping might lead to more efficient development of resistant varieties by reducing costs and time at early stages, and provide solid data for marker-assisted selection with a quantitative tool for classifying resistance.[Formula: see text] Copyright © 2023 The Author(s). Ipomoea batatas, popularmente conhecida como batata-doce, é considerada uma das plantas com grande importância econômica por apresentar características favoráveis para o suprimento de calorias, vitaminas e minerais na alimentação humana. Dentre os genótipos com potencial econômico destaca-se a cultivar biofortificada BRS Amélia (Ipomoea batatas), por apresentar valores nutricionais, rusticidade e fácil manejo. Pesquisas indicam que a ausência do uso de tecnologias de fertilização, pode proporcionar resultados de baixa produtividade de batata-doce, sendo necessária a utilização de adubações balanceadas. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o desenvolvimento da cultivar biofortificada BRS Amélia, submetida a usos de diferentes tecnologias de fertilização em sistema de cultivo vertical. As mudas receberam diferentes doses de fertilizante de liberação controlada: 0,0 (controle); 30g; 60g; 90g; 120g e uma dose de 40g por cova de NPK 13-13-28 de pronta solubilidade. Aos 180 dias os dados de parâmetros biométricos e de produção foram coletados e submetidos à análise de variância e análise de regressão seguida pelo teste de Tukey a 5% para separação de médias. A aplicação do fertilizante de liberação controlada apresentou efeito positivo no desempenho das plantas em altura, diâmetro do coleto, número de folhas, número de ramos, comprimento de ramos e clorofila. Para os parâmetros biomassa fresca da raiz e biomassa seca da raiz o uso do fertilizante convencional apresentou melhor resultado comparado com o fertilizante de liberação controlada para produção de batata-doce BRS Amélia em solo fértil no sistema de cultivo vertical.(AU)


pomoeabatatas, popularly known as sweet potato is considered one of the plants with great economicimportance for presenting favorable characteristics for the suppy of calories, vitamins and minerals in human food. Among the genotypes with economic potential, the biofortified cultivar BRS Amélia (Ipomoea batatas) stands out, as it has high nutritional values, rusticity and easy handling. Researches indicate that the absence of fertilization technologies can cause lower productivities of sweet potato, making necessary the use of balanced fertilizations. This study aimed to evaluate the development of thebiofortified cultivar BRS Amélia, submitted to the use of different fertilization technologies in a vertical cultivation system. The seedlings received different doses of controlled-release fertilizer: 0.0 (control); 30g; 60g; 90g; 120g and a dose of 40g per planting hole of readily soluble NPK 13-13-28. At 180 days, biometric and production parameters data were collected and submitted to analysis of variance and analysisof regression followed by Tukey test at 5 % for separation of means. The application of the controlled release fertilizer had a positive effect on the production of the studied cultivar, favoring the performance of the plants and promoting a increase especially of height, collar diameter, number of leaves, number of shoots, shoot length and chlorophyll. The application of controlled-release fertilizer had a positive effect on plant performance in height, stem diameter, number of leaves, number of branches, branch length and chlorophyll. For the parameters fresh root biomass and dry root biomass, the use of conventional fertilizer showed better results compared to FLC for the production of sweet potato BRS Amélia in fertile soil in the vertical cultivation system.(AU)

This research determined the nutritional composition, antioxidant activity and total phenolic compound content of sweet potato flour from different cultivars: Beauregard cv. sweet potato (BF) and the common sweet potato Brazlândia Rosada cv. (CF). Total lipids, proteins, moisture, carbohydrates, pH, titratable acidity, fiber, ash, iron, zinc, beta-carotene, vitamin A and determination of caloric value were analyzed. Antioxidant activity and total phenolic compounds were also determined by the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl), ABTS (2,2-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) and FRAP (Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power) methods. CF showed higher levels of carbohydrates, ash, fiber, pH and antioxidant activity by the ABTS method. Protein and zinc contents were similar between the two flours. BF had higher moisture content, caloric value, lipids, iron, DPPH radical scavenging capacity and antioxidant activity by the FRAP method, as well as total phenolic compounds, beta-carotene and vitamin A content. The data revealed good nutritional composition for both analyzed flours. The Beauregard flour can be highlightedregarding its higher beta-carotene and iron content. Moreover, the Beauregard sweet potato flour is a good source of provitamin A, in addition to being a source of fiber.

A FC apresentou maiores teores de carboidratos, cinzas, fibras, pH e atividade antioxidante pelo método ABTS. Os teores de proteínas e zinco foram semelhantes entre as duas farinhas. A FB apresentou maiores teores de umidade, valor calórico, lipídeos, ferro, capacidade sequestradora de radicais DPPH e atividade antioxidante pelo método FRAP, compostos fenólicos totais, conteúdo de betacaroteno e vitamina A. Os dados revelaram uma boa composição nutricional para ambas as farinhas analisadas. O destaque para a farinha da batata-doce Beauregard é maior em relação ao seu teor de betacaroteno e ferro. Sendo a farinha obtida pela batata-doce Beauregard uma boa fonte de pró-vitamina A, além de ser fonte de fibras.

This study aimed to analyze the phenolic compounds, antioxidant activity, and the main nutritional components of different colored-fleshed sweet potato genotypes grown in Argentina. Three cultivars of standard size were compared to undersized ones, currently discarded. Furthermore, four genotypes grown in different agroecological locations in Tucuman, Argentina, were evaluated. Chlorogenic and 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acids were identified as the prevailing phenolic compounds in all samples. Undersized roots had significantly higher phenolics, antioxidant activity and carotenoids than standard. Therefore, they can confer healthy attributes to processed foods and, additionally, reduce waste. Genotypes from Tucuman grown under water stress conditions presented the lowest phenolics, anthocyanins and antioxidant activity, but the highest carotenoid contents. Orange-fleshed cultivars showed the highest protein percentages (6.0-11.7 %) and carotenoid contents ranging between 310 and 1012 µg ß-carotene/g dw, with more than 90 % ß-carotene. These findings could help to promote the cultivation of local genotypes with high added value.

A sample set of 18 sweet potatoes [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam] segmented into six registered cultivars and 12 new varieties were evaluated. The 142 tuberous roots were obtained from a sweet potato germplasm bank (BAG-sweet potato; -27.417713768824555 and -49.64874168439556), specifically from plants belonging to a sweet potato breeding program. All samples were characterized according to their morphology, instrumental pulp color, proximate composition, and total dietary fiber. The analytical results were submitted to parametric and non-parametric statistical tests for sample variance data comparison. Moreover, the screening of the cultivars and new varieties was performed by exploratory statistical analysis, factor analysis (FA), and principal component analysis (PCA). From the sixteen independent variables that characterized the samples, the exploratory FA identified thirteen that had a communality greater than 0.7, with 92.08% of assertiveness. The PCA generated 4 principal components able to account for 84.01% of the explanatory variance. So, among the six registered cultivars, SCS372 Marina and SCS370 Luiza showed the capability to be employed as cultivars for production. Among the 12 sweet potato new varieties, samples 17025-13, 17125-10, and 17117 met the requirements for patent and registration. These results will be useful to farmers who wish to use these sweet potatoes in the development of their crops.

The effects of microwave alone (MA) and microwave-assisted L-malic acid (MLA) on the physicochemical properties, structural and digestibility of sweet potato starch were investigated. The results showed that the swelling power, lightness (L⁎) and whiteness index (WI), gelatinization enthalpy of starch decreased by MA and MLA treatment. The starch treated by MLA showed a new characteristic absorption peak at near 1735 cm-1 in the measurement of FT-IR, while the starch treated with MA showed no new characteristic peak. The relative crystallinity of starch modified by MSE and MA decreased, but it still retained A-type crystal structure. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the surface destruction of MSE-modified starch was greater than that of starch modified by MA. MLA increased the content of resistant starch (RS), while MA reduced the content of resistant starch (RS). The relative crystallinity and gelatinization enthalpy of continuous 60 s treatment were lower than those of discontinuous 60 s treatment. These results indicated that MLA had a greater effect on the physicochemical properties, structural and digestibility of starch than MA. Starch modified by MLA can be added to foods as a low-carbohydrate ingredient, and the starch treated by MA is suitable for foods with low swelling, such as noodles.

The current dietary habits cause health problems due to foods' composition, with bread as an important example. Our aim was to formulate an optimum dough blend with flours from wheat, amaranth and orange sweet potato to obtain a physically good and highly nutritional bread. Bread was prepared with blends of wheat, amaranth and orange sweet potato flours, optimizing the technological properties of the doughs by the response surface methodology and analyzing their physical and nutritional properties. Amaranth provides protein and fiber, and sweet potatoes provide ß-carotenoids and high antioxidant activity. The prediction models were adjusted by mixing time (MT), peak dough resistance (PDR), setback (SB) and breakdown (BD). The interaction between wheat and amaranth significantly (p < 0.05) affected MT, PDR and SB, while the interaction between amaranth and sweet potato affected BD (p < 0.05); none of the components influenced PDR. The optimized blend (68.7% wheat, 22.7% amaranth and 8.6% sweet potato) produced a bread with the best crust and crumb appearance. This bread was comparable to that made with 100% wheat in specific volume and textural characteristics, but had better protein quality, higher content of fermentable fiber, pro-vitamin A, and bioactive compounds with good antioxidant capacity, and a lower glycemic index.

Sweet potato (SP; Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam) is an edible tuber native to America and the sixth most important food crop worldwide. China leads its production in a global market of USD 45 trillion. SP domesticated varieties differ in specific phenotypic/genotypic traits, yet all of them are rich in sugars, slow digestible/resistant starch, vitamins, minerals, bioactive proteins and lipids, carotenoids, polyphenols, ascorbic acid, alkaloids, coumarins, and saponins, in a genotype-dependent manner. Individually or synergistically, SP's phytochemicals help to prevent many illnesses, including certain types of cancers and cardiovascular disorders. These and other topics, including the production and market diversification of raw SP and its products, and SP's starch as a functional ingredient, are briefly discussed in this review.

The purpose of the food industry is to ensure the availability of safe and nutritious food ingredients for human consumption. Sweet potato is a crop with excellent industrialization possibilities for human food due to its important nutrient content. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of an alginate-calcium sulfate-tripolyphosphate (PPTS) gelling system on the physicochemical and sensory characteristics of restructured sweet potato products. Fifteen formulations with varied concentrations of alginate, calcium sulfate, and PPTS were elaborated and subjected to a ordered-preference test. The physicochemical composition and color parameters of the preferred samples were determined, and the consumer acceptance, intention to purchase, and acceptability index (AI) were assessed. The preferred formulations (p ≤ 0.05) were F1, F6, F10, F11, and F14, and the gel formation was efficient at retaining water and preventing the restructured products from absorbing fat during frying. The restructured products with the highest water retention and lowest fat absorption were F11 (46.75%), F10 (44.53%), and F14 (43.29%). In the acceptance test, no differences (p ≥ 0.05) were found in the attributes softness, crunchiness, and sweet potato flavor. Formulations F6 and F14 obtained the highest acceptability index (AI), equal to or higher than 70%, indicating that they could represent viable alternatives for the industrial transformation of sweet potato for its possible commercialization.

BACKGROUND: Although tubers play a significant role in Brazilian agriculture, very little is known about the intake of tubers among the Brazilian population. The objective of this study was to characterize the intake of tubers across Brazil. The types of tubers consumed were quantified, and the impact of geographic and sociodemographic factors was assessed. METHODS: This cross-sectional study is based on dietary intake data of 33,504 subjects obtained from the Brazilian National Dietary Survey. All tuber containing foods were identified, and the contribution of different tubers to overall tuber consumption in Brazil was quantified. Descriptive analyses assessed the impact of macroregion and sociodemographic characteristics on tuber consumption, and differences in intake were assessed using statistical tests. Lastly, the dietary intakes of tuber consumers and non-consumers were compared after adjusting for energy and covariates to determine if there were any major differences in dietary intakes between the two groups. RESULTS: Fifty-five percent of the Brazilian population consumed tubers, which differed by macroregion. The intake of tubers among consumers also differed between macroregions. Overall, rural areas reported significantly higher mean daily intakes of tubers (122 g/day) among tuber consumers than urban areas (95 g/day). Mandioca and potato were the most commonly consumed tubers (59 and 43% prevalence, respectively, on any of the 2 days), while the highest daily intakes amongst tuber consumers across Brazil were noted for sweet potato (156 g/day) and potato (95 g/day). On a macroregion level, among tuber consumers, mandioca had the highest prevalence of consumption in the North (94%), Northeast (83%), and Central-West (68%), while consumption of potatoes was most prevalent in the Southeast (63%) and South (62%). Compared to women, small but significantly higher tuber intakes were noted for males (108 vs. 85 g/day). There were no significant differences in intakes among income quintiles. After adjusting for energy and other covariates, nutrient intakes between tuber and non-tuber consumers were not meaningfully different, with the exception of sodium (+ 6.0% comparing non-tuber to tuber consumers), iron (+ 6.1%), zinc (+ 5.7%), vitamin C (+ 8.3%), riboflavin (+ 9.0%), and folate (+ 7.9%). CONCLUSIONS: Tuber consumption is influenced by regional and sociodemographic characteristics of the Brazilian population. When looking at energy-adjusted nutrient intakes, diets of tuber consumers have resulted in somewhat lower intakes of some micronutrients, namely riboflavin, folate, vitamin C, iron, sodium, and zinc.

Biochemical characterization of polyphenol oxidase (PPO) present in purple sweet potato (PSP) is a key step in developing efficient methodologies to control oxidative damage caused by this enzyme to the valuable components of PSP, such as caffeoylquinic acid derivatives and acylated anthocyanins. Thus, this work focused on the assessment of the effects of pH, temperature, and chemical agents on the PPO activity as well as characterization of the PPO substrate specificity towards major phenolic compounds found in PSP. The optimum conditions of enzyme activity were pH 7 and a temperature range of 20-30 °C at which phenolic substrates were oxidized with 72.5-99.8% yield. Zn2+ ions remarkably reduced PPO activity while Cu2+ ions improved enzyme performance. The highest substrate preference was shown for 3,4,5-tri-caffeoylquinic and 3,5-di-caffeoylquinic acid, followed by 5-caffeoylquinic and caffeic acid, 3,4- and 4,5-di-caffeoylquinic acids, peonidin-3-caffeoyl-p-hydroxybenzoyl-sophoroside-5-glucoside. The highest Km values were found for 4,5-feruloyl-caffeoylquinic acid and catechol.

Amidst the global plastic pollution crisis, bio-based polymers have been proposed as a potential substitute to tackle this issue. Owed to their biodegradability, biopolymers are generally regarded as eco-friendly during the post-consumer (disposal) stage. However, the environmental burden of the many production processes biopolymers and their components undergo better reflect the sustainable nature of these materials. Previous studies evaluating the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of starch-based composites have focused on commercially available starches, although other non-conventional starches can also be used to produce biopolymers. To address this knowledge gap, in the present study we evaluated the LCA of starch-Brazil nut fiber biocomposites prepared with starch from three different sources, Andean potato, corn, and sweet potato, and applying two different plasticizers, glycerol and sorbitol. Results indicated that the starch-based biocomposites were less impacting than conventional PLA-Brazil nut fiber and PP-glass fiber composites. The type of starch and plasticizer significantly influenced the environmental load of the production of the composites. The main drivers of these differences were the multiple agricultural practices, such as irrigation and fertilization, and the crop efficiency for starch extraction. Sorbitol was found to be many times more impacting than glycerol in most categories, which is due to the complex processing of sorbitol and high content in biocomposites with similar mechanical properties than glycerol. Additionally, Brazil nut fibers are presented as an eco-friendly and low-burden natural filler due to their easy processing and agricultural waste origin. The limitations, applications, and significance of the results were discussed.
