RESUMO

Semiconductor hollow spheres have garnered significant attention in recent years due to their unique structural properties and enhanced surface area, which are advantageous for various applications in catalysis, energy storage, and sensing. The present study explores the surfactant-assisted synthesis of bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) hollow spheres, emphasizing their enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity. Utilizing a novel, facile, two-step evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) approach, monodisperse BiFeO3 hollow spheres were synthesized with a narrow particle size distribution. The synthesis involved Bi/Fe citrate complexes as precursors and the triblock copolymer Pluronic P123 as a soft template. The BiFeO3 hollow spheres demonstrated outstanding photocatalytic performance in degrading the emerging pollutants Rhodamine B and metronidazole under visible-light irradiation (100% degradation of Rhodamine B in <140 min and of metronidazole in 240 min). The active species in the photocatalytic process were identified through trapping experiments, providing crucial insights into the mechanisms and efficiency of semiconductor hollow spheres. The findings suggest that the unique structural features of BiFeO3 hollow spheres, combined with their excellent optical properties, make them promising candidates for photocatalytic applications.

RESUMO

In recent years, semiconductor hollow spheres have gained much attention due to their unique combination of morphological, chemical, and physico-chemical properties. In this work, we report for the first time the synthesis of BiFeO3 hollow spheres by a facile hydrothermal treatment method. The mechanism of formation of pure phase BiFeO3 hollow spheres is investigated systematically by variation of synthetic parameters such as temperature and time, ratio and amount of precursors, pressure, and calcination procedures. The samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. We observe that the purity and morphology of the synthesized materials are very sensitive to synthesis parameters. In general, the chemically and morphologically very robust hollow spheres have diameters in the range of 200 nm to 2 µm and a wall thickness of 50-200 nm. The synthesized BiFeO3 hollow spheres were applied as catalysts in the photodegradation of the model pollutant Rhodamine B under visible-light irradiation. Notably, the photocatalyst demonstrated exceptionally high removal efficiencies leading to complete degradation of the dye in less than 150 min at neutral pH. The superior efficiencies of the synthesized material are attributed to the unique features of hollow spheres. The active species in the photocatalytic process have been identified by trapping experiments.

RESUMO

In this study, spheres of poly (vinylidene fluoride)/clay were synthesized using an easy dripping method (also known as phase inversion). The spheres were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermal analysis. Finally, application tests were carried out using commercial cachaça, a popular alcoholic beverage in Brazil. The SEM images revealed that during the solvent exchange process for sphere formation, PVDF tends to form a three-layered structure with a low-porosity intermediate layer. However, the inclusion of clay was observed to reduce this layer and also widen the pores in the surface layer. The results of the batch adsorption tests showed that the composite with 30% clay content in relation to the mass of PVDF was the most effective among those tested, with the removal of 32.4% and 46.8% of the total copper present in the aqueous and ethanolic media, respectively. The adsorption of copper from cachaça in columns containing cut spheres resulted in adsorption indexes above 50% for samples with different copper concentrations. Such removal indices fit the samples within the current Brazilian legislation. Adsorption isotherm tests indicate that the data fit better to the BET model.

RESUMO

The synthesis of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) spheres with different sizes has been a challenge. PMMA has promise for future applications, e.g., as a template for preparing porous oxide coatings by thermal decomposition. Different amounts of SDS as a surfactant are used as an alternative to control PMMA microsphere size through the formation of micelles. The objectives of the study were twofold: firstly, to determine the mathematical relationship between SDS concentration and PMMA sphere diameter, and secondly, to assess the efficacy of PMMA spheres as templates for SnO2 coating synthesis and their impact on porosity. The study used FTIR, TGA, and SEM techniques to analyze the PMMA samples, and SEM and TEM techniques were used for SnO2 coatings. The results showed that PMMA sphere diameter could be adjusted by varying the SDS concentration, with sizes ranging from 120 to 360 nm. The mathematical relationship between PMMA sphere diameter and SDS concentration was determined with a y = axb type equation. The porosity of SnO2 coatings was found to be dependent on the PMMA sphere diameter used as a template. The research concludes that PMMA can be used as a template to produce oxide coatings, such as SnO2, with tunable porosities.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: HOX transcribed antisense RNA (HOTAIR) is a long noncoding RNA (LncRNA) that promotes tumor progression. Exosomes are critically involved in cancer progression. The presence of HOTAIR in the circulating exosomes and the roles of exosomal HOTAIR in gastric cancer (GC) remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate the role of HOTAIR in exosomes in promoting the growth and metastasis of GC. METHODS: Serum exosomes from GC patients were captured by CD63 immunoliposome magnetic spheres (CD63-IMS), and the biological characteristics of the exosomes were identified. The expression levels of HOTAIR in GC cells, tissues, serum and serum exosomes were detected by fluorescence quantitative PCR (qRT-PCR), and the clinicopathological correlation was statistically analyzed. The growth and metastasis abilities of GC cells with HOTAIR knockdown in vitro were evaluated by cell experiment. The effects of HOTAIR highly-expressed NCI-N87 cell-derived exosomes were used to treat HOTAIR lowly-expressed MKN45 cells on GC growth and metastasis were also evaluated. RESULTS: The exosomes isolated by CD63-IMS had a particle size of 89.78 ± 4.8 nm and were oval membranous particles. The expression of HOTAIR in tumor tissues and serum of GC patients was increased (P < 0.05), and the expression of HOTAIR in serum exosomes was significantly increased (P < 0.01). The in NCI-N87 and MKN45 cell experiment demonstrated that HOTAIR knockdown by RNA interference suppressed cell growth and metastasis in NCI-N87 cells. Coculture of exosomes secreted by NCI-N87 cells with MKN45 cells significantly increased the expression of HOTAIR, and enhanced cell growth and metastasis. CONCLUSION: LncRNA HOTAIR can be used as a potential biomarker which provides a new way for the diagnosis and treatment of GC.

RESUMO

Introduction: Cancer Stem Cells (CSC) are responsible for maintaining tumor growth, chemoresistance, and metastasis. Therefore, understanding their characteristics is critical to progress in cancer therapy. While the contribution of the canonical Wnt/b-catenin signaling in both normal and CSCs had been well established, the function of non-canonical Wnt signaling cascades in stem cells is unclear. Recently, we reported that Wnt ligands trigger complex signaling in which the canonical and non-canonical responses can be simultaneously activated by one ligand in colon cancer cells, suggesting, therefore, that noncanonical Wnt pathways may also be important in CSCs. Methods: The present work aimed to know the role of the Wnt/Ca2+ pathway in colon CSCs. We used tumorspheres as a model of CSCs enrichment of CRC cell lines with different Wnt/b-catenin contexts. Results: Using Wnt3a and Wnt5a as prototype ligands to activate the canonical or the non-canonical pathways, respectively, we found that both Wnt3a and Wnt5a promote sphere-formation capacity and proliferation without stimulating b-catenin-dependent transcription. Upregulation of sphere formation by Wnt5a or Wnt3a requires the downstream activation of Phospholipase C and transcriptional factor NFAT. Moreover, the single specific inhibition of PLC or NFAT, using U73122 and 11R-VIVIT, respectively, leads to impaired sphere formation. Discussion: Our results indicate that both types of ligands activate the Wnt/Ca2+ signaling axis to induce/maintain the self-renewal efficiency of CSCs, demonstrating to be essential for the functions of CSC in colon cancer.

RESUMO

The search for adsorbent materials with a certain chemical inertness, mechanical resistance, and high adsorption capacity, as is the case with alumina, is carried out with structural or surface modifications with the addition of additives or metallic salts. This research shows the synthesis, characterization, phase evolution and Cd(II) adsorbent capacity of α-Al2O3/Ba-ß-Al2O3 spheres obtained from α-Al2O3 nanopowders by the ion encapsulation method. The formation of the Ba-ß-Al2O3 phase is manifested at 1500 °C according to the infrared spectrum by the appearance of bands corresponding to AlO4 bonds and the appearance of peaks corresponding to Ba-O bonds in Raman spectroscopy. XRD determined the presence of BaO·Al2O3 at 1000 °C and the formation of Ba-ß-Al2O3 at 1600 °C. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the presence of spherical grains corresponding to α-Al2O3 and hexagonal plates corresponding to ß-Al2O3 in the spheres treated at 1600 °C. The spheres obtained have dimensions of 4.65 ± 0.30 mm in diameter, weight of 43 ± 2 mg and a surface area of 0.66 m2/g. According to the curve of pH vs. zeta potential, the spheres have an acid character and a negative surface charge of -30 mV at pH 5. Through adsorption studies, an adsorbent capacity of Cd(II) of 59.97 mg/g (87 ppm Cd(II)) was determined at pH 5, and the data were fitted to the pseudo first order, pseudo second order and Freundlich models, with correlation factors of 0.993, 0.987 and 0.998, respectively.

RESUMO

In solution, the solvent determines the molecular conformation and the chemical reaction viability and selectivity. When solvent-solute and solvent-solvent interactions present similar strengths, explicit salvation is the best way to describe a system. The problem to solve is how big the explicit shell should be. In this paper, we want to answer one of the fundamental questions in the implementation of explicit solvation, exactly how many solvent molecules should be added and where they should be placed. Here we determine the first solvent sphere around a molecule and describe how it controls the conformation and selectivity of a selected reaction. NMR experiments were carried out to identify the number of solvent molecules around the solute that constitutes the first solvent sphere, and the interaction between this solvent sphere and the solute was detected using DFT and QTAIM calculations. A new approach to the solvation energy is presented. Finally, we established the role of solvent molecules in the conformation of the solute and in the transition states that produce the two possible products of the reaction.

RESUMO

This work aimed to develop and evaluate the influence of processing variables on the morphology and swelling of sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) spheres for possible applications as a biomaterial. We used the drip method to obtain spheres with the polymer starting solutions SPEEK-6 (w/v: 6%) and SPEEK-10 (w/v: 10%), drip rates (20 and 30 mL/h), and drip heights (5 and 10 cm) in experimental planning. The samples were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), optical microscopy (OM), the absorption capacity of phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) by swelling (%), and statistical analysis of data through Design of Experiments (DOE). The obtained results evidenced that the processing variables influenced the morphology and swelling. Spheres with a bigger concentration of the polymer solution presented a greater degree of sulfonation (DS). We verified that the diameter of the spheres was directly related to the variable height and the sphericity was associated with the speed and viscosity of the solution. Bigger and more pores in a greater amount were observed in the spheres with a greater DS, influencing the behavior of the swelling in PBS. The better variable combinations with a high DS, regular sphericity, a smaller diameter, and greater swelling were the samples S2-10-20-5 e S10-10-20-5. The cytotoxicity indicated that the best samples obtained in the experimental planning (S2-10-20-5 and S10-10-20-5) were not toxic. In that regard, the evaluated spheres presented cell viability and swelling capacity, suggesting their possible applications as biomaterials.

RESUMO

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Plastic pollution research has experienced exponential growth in the last decade; however, Argentina concentrates more than 70% of their research in the last 4 years. This review compiles regional research on plastic pollution in water, soil, sediment, air and organisms in Argentina. It discusses current sampling, quantification, and plastics identification methodologies while analyzing levels, gaps, and opportunities. RECENT FINDINGS: Research in plastic pollution was mainly focused on the biosphere component (52.9%), followed by the hydrosphere component (29.4%), and finally the lithosphere component (17.7%), with less than 20% addressing multiple components simultaneously. Sixty percent of this research was focused around microplastics, and less than 20% have considered multiple plastic debris sizes. Marine coastal species from Argentina had higher levels of microplastics than organisms from other South American studies, while microfibers were identified in 100% of the freshwater organisms studied. The lowest microplastic concentrations were found in lakes and in the Paraná and La Plata rivers, while the maximum concentrations were found in Pampa´s streams. There was a lack of standardization in methodology and unit expression in studies of sediment microplastics, which hinders comparison between reports. Argentine scientists have created the national alliance called SciEnce for Plastic Impacts Argentina (SEPIA). SEPIA is a network which aims to systemize plastic pollution research, coordinate methodologies, and enhance relationships with decision-makers, NGOs, and the general public. A time gap was found between the designation of principal international multilateral agreements and the implementation of national regulations for plastic waste treatment, with a tendency to include advanced concepts as Extended Producer Responsibility and Circular Economy.

RESUMO

We present computer simulation and theoretical results for a system of N Quantum Hard Spheres (QHS) particles of diameter σ and mass m at temperature T, confined between parallel hard walls separated by a distance Hσ, within the range 1≤H≤∞. Semiclassical Monte Carlo computer simulations were performed adapted to a confined space, considering effects in terms of the density of particles ρ*=N/V, where V is the accessible volume, the inverse length H-1 and the de Broglie's thermal wavelength λB=h/2πmkT, where k and h are the Boltzmann's and Planck's constants, respectively. For the case of extreme and maximum confinement, 0.5

RESUMO

Glioblastomas (GBM) are the most frequent and aggressive brain tumors due to their recurrence and resistance to current therapies. These characteristics are associated with the presence of glioma stem cells (GSCs), mainly identified by the detection of the membrane antigens CD133 and CD15. The main source of GSCs has been biopsies of tumors. However, alternatives are sought from cell lines because more homogeneous populations can be obtained with high yields. This chapter describes a method for the enrichment and characterization of GSCs from cell lines derived from human GBM by selective culture with serum-free neural stem cell medium and growth factors. The technique offers alternatives for the enrichment and characterization of GSCs, that could contribute to a better understanding of the biology of GBMs.

RESUMO

Chitosan (CS) has special properties such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, antibacterial, and biological activity which make this material is currently studied in various applications, including tissue engineering. There are different methods to modify the morphology of CS. Most use chemical crosslinking agents, however, those methods have disadvantages such as low polymer degradability and unwanted side effects. The objective of this research was to obtain CS spheres through the physical crosslinking of commercial CS without using crosslinking agents through a simple coacervation method. A central composite experimental design was used to optimize the synthesis of the CS spheres and by the response surface methodology it was possible to obtain CS spheres with the smallest diameter and the most regular morphology. With the optimal formulation (CS solution 1.8% (w/v), acetic acid (AAC) solution 1% (w/v), sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution 13% (w/v), relative humidity of (10%) and needle diameter of 0.6 mm), a final sphere diameter of 1 mm was obtained. Spheres were characterized by physical, chemical, thermal, and biological properties in simulated body fluid (SBF). The results obtained allowed us to understand the effect of the studied variables on the spheres' diameter. An optimized condition facilitated the change in the morphology of the CS while maintaining its desirable properties for use in tissue engineering.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The characteristics of human hematopoietic stem cells are conditioned by the microenvironment of the bone marrow, where they interact with other cell populations, such as mesenchymal stem cells and endothelial cells; however, the study of this microenvironment is complex. The objective of this work was to develop a 3D culture system by magnetic levitation that imitates the microenvironment of human HSC. METHODS AND RESULTS: Human bone marrow-mesenchymal stem cells, umbilical cord blood-hematopoietic stem cells and a non-tumoral endothelial cell line (CC2811, LonzaⓇ) were used to develop organotypic multicellular spheres by the magnetic levitation method. We obtained viable structures with an average sphericity index greater than 0.6, an average volume of 0.5 mm3 and a percentage of aggregation greater than 70%. Histological studies of the organotypic multicellular spheres used hematoxylin and eosin stains, and an evaluation of vimentin expression by means of immunohistochemistry demonstrated an organized internal structure without picnotic cells and a high expression of vimentin. The functional capacity of human hematopoietic stem cells after organotypic multicellular spheres culture was evaluated by multipotency tests, and it was demonstrated that 3D structures without exogenous Flt3L are autonomous in the maintenance of multipotency of human hematopoietic stem cells. CONCLUSIONS: We developed organotypic multicellular spheres from normal human cells that mimic the microenvironment of the human hematopoietic stem cells. These structures are the prototype for the development of complex organoids that allow the further study of the biology of normal human stem cells and their potential in regenerative medicine.

RESUMO

Pollution generated by hazardous elements and persistent organic compounds that affect coal fire is a major environmental concern because of its toxic nature, persistence, and potential risk to human health. The coal mining activities are growing in the state of Santa Catarina in Brazil, thus the collateral impacts on the health and economy are yet to be analyzed. In addition, the environment is also enduring the collateral damage as the waste materials directly influence the coal by-products applied in civil constructions. This study was aimed to establish the relationships between the composition, morphology, and structural characteristics of ultrafine particles emitted by coal mine fires. In Brazil, the self-combustions produced by Al-Ca-Fe-Mg-Si coal spheres are rich in chalcophile elements (As, Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb, Sb, Se, Sn, and Zn), lithophile elements (Ce, Hf, In, La, Th, and U), and siderophile elements (Co, Cr, Mo, Fe, Ni, and V). The relationship between nanomineralogy and the production of hazardous elements as analyzed by advanced methods for the geochemical analysis of different materials were also delineated. The information obtained by the mineral substance analysis may provide a better idea for the understanding of coal-fire development and assessing the response of particular coal in different combustion processes.

RESUMO

The purpose of this research is to investigate the phenomenology of learning - people"s attitudes toward their learning experiences that have inherent worth in themselves (i.e., ontological learning) or have value outside of the learning itself (i.e., instrumental learning). In order to explore this topic, 58 participants from the U.S., Russia, and Brazil were interviewed with a central question derived from the science fiction writer Isaac Asimov's short story "Profession": whether participants would take a "Magic Learning Pill" (MLP) to avoid the process of learning, and instead magically acquire the knowledge. The MLP would guarantee the immediate learning by skipping the process of learning while achieving the same effect of gaining skills and knowledge. Almost all participants could think of some learning experiences for which they would take MLP and others for which they would not. Many participants would not take MLP for ontological learning, which is learning experiences that have inherent value for the people, while they would take MLP for instrumental learning, which is learning that mainly serves some other non-educational purposes. The main finding suggests that both instrumental and ontological types of learning are recognized by a wide range of people from diverse cultures as present and valued in their lives. This is especially significant in light of the overwhelmingly instrumental tone of public discourse about education. In the context of formal education, ontological learning was mentioned 35 times (28.0%) while instrumental learning was mentioned 74 times (60.2%). Although ontological learning was often mentioned as taking place outside of school, incorporating pedagogy supporting ontological learning at school deserves consideration.

RESUMO

Owing to current problems in boar sperm cryopreservation, this study proposes to evaluate vitrification in spheres as an alternative cryopreservation procedure, comparing the use or not of permeable cryoprotectants and two warming methods. Extended (n = 3; r = 4) and raw (n = 5; r = 2) porcine spermatozoa were diluted in media, in the absence or presence of either 4% dimethylformamide or 4% glycerol, to a final concentration of 5 × 106  spermatozoa/ml and vitrified using the spheres method. Two warming procedures were evaluated: a rapid method (30 s at 37°C) and an ultrarapid method (7 s at 75°C, followed by 30 s at 37°C). Percentages of total motility (phase contrast), membrane function (hypo-osmotic swelling test), acrosome integrity (phase contrast), sperm viability (6-carboxyfluorescein diacetate and propidium iodide stain), chromatin condensation (toluidine blue stain) and chromatin susceptibility to acid denaturation (acridine orange stain) were evaluated in the samples before and after vitrification. Results, analysed using Friedman's test, suggest that rapid warming of raw porcine spermatozoa vitrified without permeable cryoprotectants may preserve DNA condensation and integrity better than the other processing methods studied in this work. Hence, porcine sperm vitrification using spheres could be used to produce embryos with ICSI to further validate this method.

Abstract The rise of the political party Podemos, within the context of a crisis in political representation, can be explained from a perspective of transformative interactions between public spheres, social movements and new technologies. The emergence of the 15M movement allowed Podemos to offer a new diagnosis of politics that has been actively promoted on social media, which represent a true campaign platform for low-budget parties. An analysis of Twitter and Facebook reveals the rapid growth of Podemos, its prominence on social networks, the profile of its followers and its most influential publications in these new discourses. Lastly, we analyze the challenges for this type of party in terms of incorporating into the political panorama in Spain and in Europe.

RESUMO

This study provides an assessment of the politics involved in the inclusion of street vendors as having the right to be considered part of an informal labor force in the downtown area of Barranquilla. Quantitative and qualitative methods were applied to evaluate the collected data. The areas of analysis were as follows: informal stationary vendors located in the comercial sector and Barranquilla's labor policies and directives regarding such labor. In conclusion, despite the local government's approach to include informal street vendors as part of the labor force with their corresponding labor and political social rights, many of these do not take part in any of the programs earmarked as benefits of such due to lack of awareness of such programs.
