Abstract Objective: The aim of this population-based retrospective study was to compare the osteogenic effect of newly formed bone after maxillary sinus floor elevation (MSFE) and simultaneous implantation with or without bone grafts by quantitatively analyzing trabecular bone parameters. Methodology: A total of 100 patients with missing posterior maxillary teeth who required MSFE and implantation were included in this study. Patients were divided into two groups: the non-graft group (n=50) and the graft group (n=50). Radiographic parameters were measured using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), and the quality of newly formed bone was analyzed by assessing trabecular bone parameters using CTAn (CTAnalyzer, SkyScan, Antwerp, Belgium) software. Results: In the selected regions of interest, the non-graft group showed greater bone volume/total volume (BV/TV), bone surface/total volume (BS/TV), trabecular number (Tb. N), and trabecular thickness (Tb. Th) than the graft group (p<0.001). The non-graft group showed lower trabecular separation (Tb. Sp) than the graft group (p<0.001). The incidence of perforation and bleeding was higher in the graft group than in the non-graft group (p<0.001), but infection did not significantly differ between groups (p>0.05). Compared to the graft group, the non-graft group showed lower postoperative bone height, gained bone height and apical bone height (p<0.001). Conclusion: MSFE with and without bone grafts can significantly improve bone formation. In MSFE, the use of bone grafts hinders the formation of good quality bone, whereas the absence of bone grafts can generate good bone quality and limited bone mass.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the bone response to two different implant surfaces on sinus lift procedures in rabbits. Bilateral sinus lifting with inorganic bovine bone associated with collagen membrane and immediate implantation were performed in 16 rabbits. Custom mini-implants were randomly installed in the prepared sites: one side received a double acid-etched (DAE) surface and the other a nano-hydroxyapatite (NHA) surface. The animals were euthanized 30 and 60 days after surgery, and biopsies were collected for microtomographic and histomorphometric analysis. After 30 days, no intra- and inter-group statistical differences were observed in microtomographic analysis, while at 60 days, bone analysis showed statistically significant differences between groups (p < 0.05) for all the evaluated parameters. Histomorphometric analysis showed, after 30 days, mean % of Bone-to-Implant Contact (BIC) for DAE and NHA of 31.70 ± 10.42% vs. 40.60 ± 10.22% (p > 0.05), respectively; for % of Bone Area Fraction Occupancy (BAFO), mean values were 45.43 ± 3.597% for DAE and 57.04 ± 5.537% for NHA (p < 0.05). After 60 days, mean %BIC and %BAFO for DAE and NHA implants were statistically significant (p < 0.05). The NHA surface showed superior biological features compared to the DAE treatment, promoting higher bone formation around the implants in an experimental model of bone repair in a grafted area.

BACKGROUND: Due to the lack of data comparing the biological behavior of two formulations, granules and paste, of alloplastic graft from microtomographic and histomorphometric points of view, the aim of the present experiment was to compare the histomorphometric and microtomographic healing of two formulations, i.e., granules (MR sites) or paste (MR-inject sites) of an alloplastic graft composed of a combination of beta-tricalcium phosphate and hydroxyapatite used for maxillary sinus lifting. METHODS: A sinus lifting procedure was carried out bilaterally in 20 rabbits, and the elevated space was filled with either paste or granules of an alloplastic material. A collagen membrane was placed on the antrostomy and the animals were euthanized after 2 or 10 weeks, 10 animals each group. Microtomographic and histological analyses were performed. RESULTS: Higher proportions of new bone formation were found at the MR, compared to the MR-inject sites both after 2 weeks (2.65 ± 2.89% vs. 0.08 ± 0.12%; p < 0.01) and 10 weeks of healing (34.20 ± 13.86 vs. 23.28 ± 10.35%; p = 0.022). CONCLUSIONS: It was concluded that new bone formation was faster in the MR sites, compared to the MR-inject. However, a longer time of healing should be allowed to make final conclusions about the efficiency in bone formation of the paste formulation of the biomaterial used in the present study.

BACKGROUND: Due to the lack of data on bone-to-graft contact (BGC) over time in the various regions within the subantral space of the augmented sinus floor, the present study aimed to evaluate the osteoconductivity of deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) with granules of different sizes applied in maxillary sinus floor elevation. METHODS: A maxillary sinus augmentation was performed bilaterally in 18 rabbits using DBBM with particle dimensions of either 0.125-1.0 mm or 1-2 mm. The antrostomy was covered using a collagen barrier. The animals were euthanized in groups of six after 2, 4, and 8 weeks of healing. MicroCT and histological analyses were performed. RESULTS: After 2 weeks of healing, BGC was 10.9% and 11.9% for the small and large granule sites, respectively. After 8 weeks of healing, the BGC increased to 65% and 62% at the small and large granule sites, respectively. The highest values were located close to the bony walls and the bony window. New bone content developed between 2 and 8 weeks from 7.0% to 27.6% and from 6.1% to 27.6% at the small and large granule sites, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Similar outcomes in osteoconductivity and bone formation were found at both small and large DBBM granule sites.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the influence of two different implant surfaces on osseointegration in maxillary sinuses of rabbits previously grafted with deproteinized bovine bone (DBB) associated or not with fresh bone marrow (BM). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixteen New Zealand albino rabbits (males, 3.5/4.5 kg and 9-12 months old) were randomly divided into two groups with 8 rabbits each, according to the type of association of biomaterials used to fill the animals' maxillary sinuses: DBB (Deproteinized Bovine Bone) and DBB/BM (Deproteinized bovine bone associated with fresh autologous bone marrow). Ninety (90) days following the grafting procedure, the animals received implants in the area with two different microstructures (SA-Sandblasting + acid attack and SA-H-Sandblasting + acid attack + immersion in 0.9% sodium chloride isotonic solution). All rabbits were euthanized 90 days after implant placement. The microtomographic analysis was performed to verify the number of mineralized tissues around the implants throughout their length (%BV/TV), while the histomorphometric analysis was performed to verify the percentage of bone-implant contact around the implants throughout their length (%BIC). RESULTS: We observed no differences in the quantity for %BV/TV (DBB-SA:33.25 ± 19.67; DBB-SA-H:35.15 ± 22.17; DBB/BM-SA:39.71 ± 24.21; DBB/BM-SA-H:36.40 ± 23.07) and %BIC (DBB-SA:58.94 ± 24.37; DBB-SA-H:52.52 ± 24.36; DBB/BM-SA: 61.66 ± 14.60; DBB/BM-SA-H: 64.06 ± 23.30) between the groups assessed. CONCLUSIONS: The addition of BM and the type of surface did not influence the osseointegration of implants installed in areas grafted with sintered deproteinized bovine bone at high temperatures in the late period assessed.

BACKGROUND: Anorganic bovine bone (Bio-Oss®) has been extensively used for reconstruction of posterior area of maxilla in sinus lift procedure; however, a new graft material (Lumina-Bone Porous®), that has a different manufacturing process, has not been yet compared in clinical and histological terms. The manufacturing process of bovine bone graft is related to size and porosity of the particles, and this can change osteoconductive property of the material and bone formation. The use of Lumina-Porus® could improve bone formation, reduce the remaining particles of the biomaterial using a low-cost material. The aim of this research was to compare the clinical, radiological, and histomorphometrical results from maxillary sinus lift with two different anorganic bovine bone substitutes Bio-Oss® (control) and Lumina-Bone Porous® (test). RESULTS: A split-mouth study was performed with 13 volunteers. The mean bone ridge height in the deepest portion of maxillary sinuses floor was 3.11 ± 0.83 mm in the Bio-Oss® and 2.38 ± 0.75 mm in the Lumina-Bone Porous®. After sinus lift, the Bio-Oss® group shows bone ridge height of 11.56 ± 2.03 mm and Lumina-Bone® of 10.62 ± 1.93 mm. The increase in alveolar bone height scores was significant between pre-augmentation and 6 months after SL in both groups (p < 0.001). No statistical significant difference in newly formed bone in the Bio-Oss® group (20.4 ± 5.4%), and Lumina-Bone Porous® (22.8 ± 8.5%) was histomorphological observed (p > 0.05). On the other hand, the residual graft particles showed significant difference between the Bio-Oss® group (19.9 ± 8.6%) and Lumina-Bone Porous® (14.6 ± 5.6%) (p < 0.05). The survival rate of dental implants for augmented area with Lumina Bone Porous® was 88.88%, while for Bio-Oss® group was 100%. CONCLUSION: Both materials Bio-Oss® and Lumina-Bone Porous® can be used in the maxillary sinus floor augmentation with good predictability in clinical, radiographical, and histological point of view.

OBJECTIVES: To follow healing process of augmented maxillary sinus in rabbits analyzing the histological pattern of bone tissue formation, along with the osteogenic activity and vascularization using a bioactive vitroceramic in comparison to deproteinized bovine bone associated or not with autogenous bone graft. DESIGN: Forty five male adult New Zealand rabbits, 5 months of age, mean weight of 4 Kg, underwent bilateral sinus augmentation surgeries to be divided in five groups: G - (Control) particulate autogenous bone graft (AG), BO - deproteinized bovine bone, BO+G - deproteinized bovine bone + AG, BSi -vitroceramic, and BSi + G - vitroceramic +AG. After 15, 45 and 90 days, all animals were euthanized for specimen's removal to be analyzed under light microscopy, histomorphometry, and immunohistochemistry for Runx2 and VEGF labeling. RESULTS: G, BO and BO+G groups healed uneventfully, allowing the formation of mature remodeling bone at day 90, regarding the association of AG with the biomaterial. On the other hand, BSi and BSi + G groups showed an important cellular reaction and granulation/fibrous tissue formation from the first to the last period of observation. Runx-2 and VEGF immunolabeling were coherent with this result. However, histomorphometry did not reveal significant differences considering new bone formation. CONCLUSIONS: Reconstructed maxillary sinuses using Biosilicate® permitted satisfactory new bone formation in comparison to the deproteinized bovine bone and AG. However, the presence of granulation/fibrous tissue and inflammatory cells associated to the degrading biomaterial indicate that further studies should be careful performed considering the immunological aspect of this new biomaterial.

OBJECTIVE: The combination of calcium phosphate with blood-derived growth factors (BDGF) has been widely used in bone regeneration procedures although its benefits are still unclear. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether or not BDGF improves the efficacy of a modified carbonated calcium phosphate biomaterial in sinus floor augmentation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ten patients underwent 20 sinus floor augmentation procedures using nanostructured carbonated hydroxyapatite (cHA) microspheres alone or associated with BDGF in a randomized controlled clinical trial. The in vitro release of growth factors was assessed by an elution assay. Bone grafts were randomly implanted in the right and left maxillary sinuses of each participant, associated either with a 0.9% saline solution or BDGF. Bone gain was evaluated through cone beam tomography after 180 days. RESULTS: Nine women and one man composed the sample. The blood-derived concentrates were able to release high levels of growth factors and cytokines. A significant clinical advantage was observed in the use of the BDGF after fibrin polymerization around the biomaterial microspheres, optimizing the surgical procedures, thereby reducing the time and displacement, and improving the adaptation of the biomaterial in the maxillary sinus. No synergistic effect was observed in bone formation when cHA was associated with BDGF (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Equivalent new bone formation was observed for cHA in the presence or absence of the BDGF concentrate in bilateral sinus floor elevation after 6 months. Blood-derived growth factors did not improve bone repair when associated with calcium phosphate in sinus lift procedures.

This study aimed to compare the primary and secondary stability, measured by resonance frequency analysis (RFA), in implants of different lengths installed in areas submitted to maxillary sinus lift. Correlation between RFA and implant insertion torque was also assessed. Twenty implants of 9 and 11 mm were inserted in areas submitted to maxillary sinus lift. The insertion torque was measured by the Bien Air motor. Osstell, through RFA, determined the implant stability quotient (ISQ) 2 times: the day of implant installation (T1) and 90 days after implant installation (T2). No differences were observed in the ISQ between T1 and T2 when the 20 implants were grouped, nor when the 9 mm implants were evaluated separately. In contrast, when the 11 mm values were evaluated separately, the ISQ was significantly higher in T2 than in T1 ( P < .05). In T1, 9 mm implants had a higher ISQ than 11 mm ones ( P < .05), whereas in T2, the implants of 11 mm showed a higher ISQ than did the 9 mm implants ( P < .05). There was no difference in insertion torque between 9 and 11 mm implants ( P > .05), nor was there a correlation between ISQ and insertion torque ( P > .05). In conclusion, longer implants (11 mm) presented a significant increase in ISQ values during the healing period when installed in areas previously submitted to maxillary sinus lift. This phenomenon was not observed for shorter implants (9 mm). Finally, no correlation was observed between ISQ and insertion torque.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have been conducted to assess new bone formation using Biogran, a bioactive glass, in maxillary sinus bone augmentation through a prospective and randomized evaluation. Moreover, there are no studies that evaluate cellular behavior by immunohistochemical assessment for osteoblastic and vascular activity during bone repair. PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to compare new bone formation and cellular behavior with Biogran alone, a 1:1 combination of Biogran and autogenous bone graft, and autogenous bone graft alone in human maxillary sinuses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten maxillary sinuses were grafted with Biogran (Group 1), 10 grafted with Biogran added to autogenous bone graft in a 1:1 ratio (Group 2), and 10 grafted with autogenous bone graft alone (Group 3). After 6 months of bone healing, samples were obtained concurrent to the dental implants' placement to be evaluated by histomorphometric and immunohistochemical assessment for RUNX2 and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). RESULTS: The amount of new bone formation in Group 1 was 42.0 ± 7.3% in the pristine bone region, 40.7 ± 14.0% in the intermediate region, and 45.6 ± 13.5% in apical region. In Group 2, for pristine bone, intermediate, and apical regions, new bone formation was 36.6 ± 12.9%, 33.2 ± 13.3%, and 45.8 ± 13.9%, respectively. Group 3 showed new bone formation of 37.3 ± 11.6%, 35.3 ± 14.7%, and 39.9 ± 15.8% in pristine bone, intermediate, and apical regions, respectively. The immunolabeling for RUNX2 showed low cellular activity in osteoblasts for all groups, and the VEGF assessment demonstrated moderate cellular activity in Groups 1 and 2; however, Group 3 presented with low activity in the pristine bone region, followed by moderate activity in the intermediate and apical region. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that Biogran and its combination with autogenous bone graft 1:1 are good bone substitutes due to their similarity to autogenous bone graft.

Abstract This study aimed to assess the performance of surgeons in determining the amount of graft material required for maxillary sinus floor augmentation in a preoperative analysis using cone-beam computed tomography images. A convenience sample of 10 retrospective CBCT exams (i-CAT®) was selected. Scans of the posterior maxilla area with an absence of at least one tooth and residual alveolar bone with an up to 5 mm height were used. Templates (n=20) contained images of representative cross-sections in multiplanar view. Ten expert surgeons voluntarily participated as appraisers of the templates for grafting surgical planning of a 10 mm long implant. Appraisers could choose a better amount of graft material using scores: 0) when considered grafting unnecessary, 1) for 0.25 g in graft material, 2) for 0.50 g, 3) for 1.00 g and 4) for 1.50 g or more. Reliability of the response pattern was analyzed using Cronbach's a. Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests were performed to compare scores. Regression analysis was performed to evaluate whether the volume of sinuses (mm3) influenced the choose of scores. In the reliability analysis, all values were low and the score distribution was independent of the volume of the maxillary sinuses (p>0.05), which did not influence choosing the amount of graft material. Surgeons were unreliable to determine the best amount of graft material for the maxillary sinus floor augmentation using only CBCT images. Surgeons require auxiliary diagnostic tools to measure the volume associated to CBCT exams in order to perform better.


Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o desempenho dos cirurgiões na determinação da quantidade de material de enxerto necessária para a elevação do assoalho do seio maxilar em uma análise pré-operatória, utilizando imagens de tomografia computadorizada de feixe cônico. Foi selecionada uma amostra de conveniência de 10 exames retrospectivos CBCT (i-CAT®). Os exames foram da área da maxila posterior que possuíam ausência de pelo menos um dente e com osso alveolar residual de altura igual ou inferior a 5 mm. Os templates (n=20) continham imagens de secções transversais representativas numa vista multiplanar. Dez experientes cirurgiões voluntariamente participaram como avaliadores dos templates para o planejamento cirúrgico de enxerto para um implante de 10 mm de comprimento. Os avaliadores escolheram a melhor quantidade de material de enxerto usando os escores: 0) quando o enxerto era desnecessário, 1) para 0,25 g de enxerto, 2) para 0,50 g, 3) para 1,00 g, e 4) para 1,50 g ou mais. A confiabilidade do padrão de resposta foi analisada utilizando a a de Cronbach. Os testes de Wilcoxon e Mann-Whitney foram utilizados para comparar os escores. A análise de regressão foi realizada para avaliar se o volume dos seios (mm3) influenciou a escolha dos escores. Na análise de confiabilidade, todos os valores foram baixos e a distribuição dos escores foi independente do volume dos seios maxilares (p>0,05), o que não influenciou a escolha da quantidade de material de enxerto. Os cirurgiões apresentaram falta de confiabilidade ao determinar a melhor quantidade de material de enxerto para o aumento do assoalho do seio maxilar utilizando somente as imagens de TCFC. Assim, os cirurgiões necessitam de ferramentas de diagnóstico auxiliares para mensuração de volume associada à TCFC para um melhor desempenho.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of low- and rapid-resorption-rate bioabsorbable collagen membranes in maxillary sinus augmentation procedure in rabbits considering Schneiderian membrane (SM) reaction and bone tissue formation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighteen male adult rabbits underwent bilateral maxillary sinus augmentation with particulate bovine hydroxyapatite to be divided into three groups, as follows: Group C - control, no membrane; Group RR - rapid resorbable collagen membrane; and Group SR - slow-resorbable collagen membrane. The animals were euthanized after 30 and 120 days for specimen's removal to be prepared and analyzed under light microscopy, histomorphometry, and immunohistochemistry for Runx2 and VEGF labeling. RESULTS: Histopathology evaluation presented similar healing pattern among the groups with a satisfactory response of SM, both at day 30 and day 120. Bone histomorphometry did not reveal significant differences among the groups, as well as immunohistochemistry analysis, which presented intense immunolabeling for both proteins in all groups. CONCLUSIONS: The presence of both membranes did not negatively interfere in bone formation and remodeling, and the focal mild inflammatory reaction caused by their degrading process did not impair the reconstructive procedure.

BACKGROUND: The success of bone augmentation to a major degree depends on the biomechanics and biological conditions of the surrounding tissues. Therefore, an animal model is needed providing anatomical sites with similar mechanical pressures for comparing its influence on different biomaterials for bone regeneration. The present report describes the new bone formation associated to biomaterial in a bursa created in the epidural space, between dura mater and cranial calvaria, under the constant pressure of cerebrospinal fluid. METHODS: Five adult California rabbits were used for the trial. In each animal, two bursae were created in the epidural spaces, in the anterior part of the skull, below both sides of the interfrontal suture. The spaces between dura mater and cranial calvaria were filled with in-situ hardening biphasic calcium phosphate containing hydroxyapatite and beta tricalcium-phosphate (BCP), in-situ hardening phase-pure beta-tricalcium phosphate (ß-TCP) or without any biomaterials (sham). After 90 days, the animals were sacrificed, and the defect sites were extracted and processed for histomorphometric analysis by optical and backscattered electron microscopy. RESULTS: The cranial epidural spaces created (n = 10) could be preserved by the application both BCP (n = 3) and ß-TCP biomaterials (n = 3) in all experimental sites. The sites augmented with BCP showed less new bone formation but a trend to better volume preservation than the sites augmented with ß-TCP. However, the bone in the BCP sites seemed to be more mature as indicated by the higher percentage of lamellar bone in the sites. In contrast, the created space could not be preserved, and new bone formation was scarce in the sham-operated sites (n = 4). CONCLUSION: The experimental bursae created bilaterally in the epidural space allows comparing objectively bone formation in relation to biomaterials for bone regeneration under permanent physiological forces from cerebrospinal fluid pressure.

We evaluated histologically and tomographically the effects of fresh frozen bone allograft (FFB) or bovine bone mineral (BBM) in maxillary sinus floor augmentations. In total, 30 maxillary sinuses from 30 patients (mean age = 51.17 ± 10.86 years) underwent sinus augmentation. Patients were divided in two test groups (15 sinuses each). The first group was grafted with allograft bone, and the second group received bovine bone mineral. After 6 months, bone samples from each group were collected for histological examination. Implant survival rates were 97.78% (FFB group) and 100% (BBM group) 6 months after functional loading. Median volumetric reductions of 31.2% (11.33-40.56) and 12.22% (9.91-20.59) were observed in the FFB and BBM groups, respectively. Comparisons between the groups for differences in initial and final volumes of bone (p = 0.015) and the rate of resorption (p = 0.009) showed statistically significant differences. The FFB group showed osteoblastic cells in close contact with osteoid matrix, connected through bridges between allograft bone particles and new bone formation. The BBM group showed BBM particles in close contact with new bone, with visible osteoid matrix bridges and osteoblastic cells surrounding it. None showed signs of acute or chronic inflammatory infiltrate. Despite better results with BBM, both FFB and BBM in maxillary sinus augmentation resulted in high percentages of new bone formation, and allowed implant placement with a low rate of failure of osseointegration at a 6-month follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Insufficient residual alveolar bone height is a common deterrent in the placement of dental implants in the posterior maxilla. The use of autografts, xenografts, allografts and alloplasts or a combination between them has been demonstrated to be effective for increasing bone height and bone volume in the deficient posterior maxilla. PURPOSE: The aim of this clinical trial is to comparatively determine the density of newly formed in sinus floor augmentation bone after a 24-week healing period treatment with a new bovine xenograft. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sinus floor was grafted with Bio-Oss® (n = 10) and Osseous® (n = 10). Histological sections were examined with a focus on the presence of connective tissue (CT) and newly formed bone (NFB). The sections were histomorphometrically evaluated and the definitive crown was inserted after 3 months. RESULTS: After 6 months, the mean value of new bone formation was 24.60 (±2.503), the CT was 42.60 (±4.006) and the remaining biomaterial was 25.40 (±2.547) in Bio-Oss group. In Osseous group, the mean value of new bone formation was 24.90 (±3.542), the CT was 45.70 (±7.040) and the remaining biomaterial was 22.90 (±3.247). CONCLUSIONS: Both biomaterials afforded a favorable implant position and the prosthetic rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Surgical techniques as sinus floor augmentation have made it possible to increase the bone volume of the posterior maxilla so that implant placement may be feasible. A large variety of bone grafting materials have been utilized for sinus floor augmentation. A good alternative is allograft. Fresh frozen bone is harvested from live or cadaveric donors and then immediately frozen and stored at -80 °C. To date, studies about the effect of fresh frozen bone are scarce. OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of new bone formation, following maxillary sinus grafting with autograft vs. fresh frozen allograft. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A split-mouth edentulous design including 15 patients was used. Sinus floor augmentation was carried out using either autogenous bone harvested from the ramus area or fresh frozen bone from allogeneic femoral heads. The choice was determined randomly, using a randomized table. The grafted sinus was left to heal for 6 months. Biopsies were harvested from the lateral wall. The biopsies were used for bone histology and histomorphometric analysis. After collection of the biopsy, dental implants were placed. After a healing period of 6 months, the implants were loaded. RESULTS: Implant survival, histology, and histomorphometry of sinuses grafted with autogenous or fresh frozen bone were similar. The new bone formation took place predominantly around and in-between particles. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of the present study support the use of fresh frozen bone allografts for sinus floor augmentation.

La pérdida de dientes superiores causa reabsorción del proceso alveolar y la neumatización del seno maxilar. La implantología oral ha permitido solucionar la perdida de dientes, sin embargo, cuando existe neumatización del seno maxilar, la disponibilidad ósea se ve disminuida, dificultando el procedimiento implantologico. Para remediar esta situación se efectúa la técnica quirúrgica de levantamiento del piso del seno maxilar, la que puede tener complicaciones por la morfología interna del seno, específicamente por la presencia de septos intrasinusales. El objetivo de este estudio es verificar la presencia y distribución de los septos intrasinusales, debido a su importancia en técnicas quirúrgicas realizadas en implantología oral. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo, basado en el análisis visual de huesos maxilares aislados. De 65 huesos se seleccionaron 51 (42 dentados y 9 edéntulos) que cumplían con determinados criterios de inclusión. La segunda parte del estudio consistió en dividir topográficamente el piso del seno en tres regiones: anterior a la cresta cigomato alveolar, en relación a ella, y posterior a la cresta. La observación de los septos fue realizado por un único examinador, asistido por un dispositivo USB, con 4 leds de alta luminiscencia. De los 51 maxilares analizados se obtuvo: 74,5 por ciento, presentaron al menos un septo intrasinusal, 25,4 por ciento, no presentaron septos visibles. Los maxilares que presentaron un único tabique correspondieron al 33,3 por ciento de la muestra, el 19,6 por ciento de la muestra presento sólo dos tabiques, el 15,7 por ciento presentó tres tabiques, mientras que los maxilares que presentaron más de tres tabiques intrasinusales correspondieron sólo al 5,9 por ciento. Del total de tabiques encontrados (75 tabiques) el 42 por ciento se observó en la región anterior, 21 por ciento en la región de la cresta cigomato alveolar y el 37 por ciento en la región posterior del seno maxilar. The loss of upper teeth causes alveolar process resorption and maxilary sinus pneumatization. Oral implantology has solved these losses, however, when pneumatization of the maxillary sinus exists, bone availability is diminished, difficulting implantology procedure. To remedy this situation, the surgical technique of lifting the maxillary sinus floor is indicated, which can have complications because of the internal maxillary sinus morphology, specifically the presence of intrasinusal septa. The aim of this study is to verify the presence and distribution of intrasinusal septa, due to its importance in surgical techniques performed in oral implantology. We conducted a descriptive study, based on visual analysis of isolated maxilary bones. Of 65 bones, 51 (42 dentate and 9 edentulous)were selected that met certain inclusion criteria. The second part of the study was, to divide the sinus floor topographically into three regions: anterior to the zygomatic alveolar crest, in relation to it, and posterior to the crest. The observation of the septa was performed by a single examiner, assisted by a USB device with 4 high-luminance LEDs. Of the 51 maxillary analyzed obtained: 74.5 percent had at least one intrasinusal septum, 25.4 percent showed no visible septa. The maxilary bones that had a single septum corresponded to 33.3 percent of the sample, 19.6 percent of the sample had only two septa, 15.7 percent had three septa, while the maxillary bones that had more than three intrasinusal septa corresponded only to 5.9 percent. Of all septa found (75 septa) 42 percent was observed in the anterior region, 21 percent in the region of the zygomatic crest and 37 percent in the posterior region of the maxillary sinus. Of the 42 dentate maxillary bones in 88,1 percent present intrasinusal septa, while the total edentulous maxillary bones (9) only 11 percent present intrasinusal septa.
