RESUMO

A gas sensor array was developed and evaluated using four high-frequency quartz crystal microbalance devices (with a 30 MHz resonant frequency in fundamental mode). The QCM devices were coated with ethyl cellulose (EC), polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), Apiezon L (ApL), and Apiezon T (ApT) sensing films, and deposited by the ultrasonic atomization method. The objective of this research was to propose a non-invasive technique for acetone biomarker detection, which is associated with diabetes mellitus disease. The gas sensor array was exposed to methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, and acetone biomarkers in four different concentrations, corresponding to 1, 5, 10, and 15 µL, at temperature of 22 °C and relative humidity of 20%. These samples were used because human breath contains them and they are used for disease detection. Moreover, the gas sensor responses were analyzed using principal component analysis and discriminant analysis, achieving the classification of the acetone biomarker with a 100% membership percentage when its concentration varies from 327 to 4908 ppm, and its identification from methanol, ethanol, and isopropanol.

RESUMO

This study investigated the interaction of monovalent cations with different sizes on quartz surfaces and the rheological impact that this causes in concentrated suspensions when subjected to the action of a rheological modifier, in this case, sodium polyacrylate (NaPA). Yield stress was determined using a rheometer with a vane-in-cup configuration to establish the relationship between shear stress and strain. Experiments were carried out in LiCl, NaCl, KCl, and CsCl solutions. The results show that the yield stress increases following the order Li < Na < K < Cs in the absence of PAA. However, the addition of NaPA significantly reduced the yield stress in all cases. This reduction was more noticeable in the LiCl and NaCl solutions than in the KCl and CsCl solutions, suggesting a more pronounced effect of PA in maker salts. We conducted molecular dynamics simulations to understand how PA interacts with dissolved salts on the quartz surface. Our results showed that Li had the highest adsorption, followed by Na, K, and Cs. As the salt concentration increased, so did the adsorption. We validated these simulation results with rheological experiments, which helped us understand the observed differences. The molecular interactions indicate that, in the lithium system, cationic bridges and the synergy between hydrogen bridges and hydrophobic bridges predominate mainly. This tendency decreases as the type of cation is changed due to the decrease in the electrical density of the cation in the following order: Li < Na < K < Cs. This reduces bridging with the quartz surface and, therefore, directly impacts the system's rheological properties.

RESUMO

Advances in sensors have revolutionized the biomedical engineering field, having an extreme affinity for specific analytes also providing an effective, real-time, point-of-care testing for an accurate diagnosis. Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) is a well-established sensor that has been successfully applied in a broad range of applications to monitor and explore various surface interactions, in situ thin-film formations, and layer properties. This technology has gained interest in biomedical applications since novel QCM systems are able to work in liquid media. QCM with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) is an expanded version of a QCM that measures changes in damping properties of adsorbed layers thus providing information on its viscoelastic nature. In this article, an open source and low cost QCM-D prototype for biomedical applications was developed. In addition, the system was validated using different Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) concentrations due to its importance for many medical applications. The statistics show a bigger dissipation of the system as the fluid becomes more viscous, also having a very acceptable sensibility when temperature is controlled.

RESUMO

Background: Resin composites undergo a certain degree of shrinkage when light-cured with different light sources available on the market, resulting in microleakage of dental restorations. The aim of the present study was to assess microleakage of class II restorations with bulk-fill resin composites cured with LED (light-emitting diode) and QTH (quartz tungsten-halogen light) units, both in cervical and occlusal areas of cavity preparations. Materials and Methods: In the present in vitro experimental study, a total of 30 human molar teeth were used, in which 60 class II cavities were prepared (mesial and distal) and restored with Filtek bulk fill resin composite. Restorations were equally distributed in 3 groups according to type of curing light: A, QTH (Litex 680A Dentamerica®); B, LED (Bluephase N® 3rd generation); and C, LED (Valo® 3rd generation). Each group was further subdivided into subgroups 1 and 2 according to IV-A or IV-B resin composite color. Restored teeth were subjected to 20,000 thermal cycles between 5° and 55 °C, then immersed in 1M silver nitrate solution for 24 h. Subsequently, the teeth were sectioned mesiodistally to obtain samples for observation under stereomicroscope in order to determine microleakage degree. Kruskal-Wallis H and Mann-Whitney U statistical tests were applied with a significance level of 5% (p < 0.05). Results: No statistically significant differences were found in the degree of microleakage of bulk-fill resin composites light-cured with LED and QTH units for both occlusal (p > 0.05) and cervical areas (p > 0.05). Additionally, no significant differences were found when comparing microleakage between occlusal and cervical areas (p > 0.05), regardless of lamp type. In addition, significant differences in microleakage degree were found between bulk-fill resins with IV-A and IV-B shades when they were light-cured with QTH at cervical level (p = 0.023). However, there were no significant differences when comparing these bulk-fill resin composite shades at occlusal level with LED (p > 0.05) and QTH (p > 0.05) units. Conclusions: Class II restorations with bulk-fill resin composite in IV-A and IV-B shades light-cured with third generation LED lamp and QTH showed no significant differences in microleakage when compared in both occlusal and cervical areas. On the other hand, significantly more microleakage was found at the cervical level when a darker shade of resin composite was used and light-cured with the QTH unit.

RESUMO

Melanoma is a highly metastatic and rapidly progressing cancer, a leading cause of mortality among skin cancers. The melanoma microenvironment, formed from the activity of malignant cells on the extracellular matrix and the recruitment of immune cells, plays an active role in the development of drug resistance and tumor recurrence, which are clinical challenges in cancer treatment. These tumoral metabolic processes are affected by proteins, including Galectin-3 (Gal-3), which is extensively involved in cancer development. Previously, we characterized a partially methylated mannogalactan (MG-Pe) with antimelanoma activities. In vivo models of melanoma were used to observe MG-Pe effects in survival, spontaneous, and experimental metastases and in tissue oxidative stress. Analytical assays for the molecular interaction of MG-Pe and Gal-3 were performed using a quartz crystal microbalance, atomic force microscopy, and contact angle tensiometer. MG-Pe exhibits an additive effect when administered together with the chemotherapeutic agent dacarbazine, leading to increased survival of treated mice, metastases reduction, and the modulation of oxidative stress. MG-Pe binds to galectin-3. Furthermore, MG-Pe antitumor effects were substantially reduced in Gal-3/KO mice. Our results showed that the novel Gal-3 ligand, MG-Pe, has both antitumor and antimetastatic effects, alone or in combination with chemotherapy.

RESUMO

Dispersants under certain conditions favor the flotation of molybdenite in seawater; however, it is not clear if the entrainment of residues to the thickening stage can compromise the quality of the clarified water. In this work, the impact of small concentrations of sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) on the flocculation and sedimentation of synthetic tailings containing kaolinite, muscovite, and quartz in seawater is evaluated. The flocculant polymer is a high-molecular-weight polyacrylamide, and the pH is alkaline. The results are auspicious for mineral processing. On the one hand, the impact of SHMP is not entirely negative and can be lessened by limiting entrainment, which is good for copper and molybdenum ore processing. On the other hand, if the small increase in turbidity generated by the SHMP is tolerated, it is possible to expect improved settling speeds. Without SHMP, large but light agglomerates are formed. With SHMP, smaller but denser aggregates are formed, settling faster, and minute aggregates increase turbidity. The underlying mechanism derives from the competition between SHMP and polymer chains for the cations in solution; the result is a greater repulsion between the chains, which leads to greater repulsion and thus dispersion of smaller flocculant coils. The study shows that SHMP in concentrations of 1 to 3 kg/t is perfectly acceptable. The results represent an advance in the understanding of SHMP interactions with polymers and minerals in water clarification, which should be of interest to the industry whose sustainability in some regions depends on closing the water cycle.

RESUMO

Biocompatible smart interfaces play a crucial role in biomedical or tissue engineering applications, where their ability to actively change their conformation or physico-chemical properties permits finely tuning their surface attributes. Polyelectrolytes, such as acrylic acid, are a particular type of smart polymers that present pH responsiveness. This work aims to fabricate stable hydrogel films with reversible pH responsiveness that could spontaneously form wrinkled surface patterns. For this purpose, the photosensitive reaction mixtures were deposited via spin-coating over functionalized glasses. Following vacuum, UV, or either plasma treatments, it is possible to spontaneously form wrinkles, which could increase cell adherence. The pH responsiveness of the material was evaluated, observing an abrupt variation in the film thickness as a function of the environmental pH. Moreover, the presence of the carboxylic acid functional groups at the interface was evidenced by analyzing the adsorption/desorption capacity using methylene blue as a cationic dye model. The results demonstrated that increasing the acrylic acid in the microwrinkled hydrogel effectively improved the adsorption and release capacity and the ability of the carboxylic groups to establish ionic interactions with methylene blue. Finally, the role of the acrylic acid groups and the surface topography (smooth or wrinkled) on the final antibacterial properties were investigated, demonstrating their efficacy against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria model strains (E. coli and S. Aureus). According to our findings, microwrinkled hydrogels presented excellent antibacterial properties improving the results obtained for planar (smooth) hydrogels.

RESUMO

The shielding features of amethyst, chalcedony, crystal rock, milky, pink, flint, and jasper quartz were calculated. The seven varieties of quartz were collected within the territory of the state of Zacatecas in Mexico. Shielding characteristics include the linear attenuation coefficients, the effective atomic numbers and the mass interaction coefficients for 1 keV to 100 GeV photons. The interaction coefficients were calculated for the coherent scattering, the photoelectric absorption, the Compton scattering, and the pair production occurring in the electric field of the atomic nucleus and the electrons. The linear attenuation coefficients were compared with those of the Portland concrete widely used as radiation shielding. In the low energy region where the photoelectric absorption is dominant the mass interaction coefficients and the total linear attenuation coefficients have three resonances due to the Si, Ca and Fe concentration, these resonances are also noticed in the effective atomic number. For photons below 60 keV the shielding performance of quartz can be used to shield X-ray devices working with less than 60 kV.

RESUMO

HYPOTHESIS: Dimensionally stable electroactive films displaying spatially addressed redox sites is still a challenging goal due to gel-like structure. Polyelectrolyte and surfactants can yield highly mesostructured films using simple buildup strategies as layer-by-layer. The use of redox modified surfactants is expected to introduce order and an electroactive response in thin films. EXPERIMENTS: The assembly of polyacrylic acid and different combinations of redox-modified and unmodified hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide yields highly structured and electroactive thin films. The growth, viscoelastic properties, mass, and electron transport of these films were studied by combining electrochemical and quartz crystal balance with dissipation experiments. FINDINGS: Our results show that the films are highly rigid and poorly hydrated. The mass and charge transport reveal that the ingress (egress) of the counter ions during the electrochemical oxidation (reduction) is accompanied with a small amount of water, which is close to their hydration sphere. Thus, the generated mesostructured films present an efficient charge transport with negligible changes in their structures during the electron transfer process. The control over the meso-organization and its stability represents a promising tool in the construction of devices where the vectorial transfer of electrons, or ions, is required.

RESUMO

Iron ore tailings (IOT) represent a major problem in the mining industry worldwide due to large volumes of waste disposed in mine sites. IOT are exposed to the environment and subjected to wind and water dispersion, even under non-catastrophic scenarios as dam collapses, and the effects of these particles to the biota are still mostly unknown. This work aimed to prepare and to characterize a suspension containing the finest (micro/nano range) particles of IOT and to evaluate its effects on development and behavior of zebrafish (Danio rerio), at both embryonic and larval stages. IOT suspension comprised 37 mg L-1 of a multi-mineral material mainly composed by hematite and quartz, in a size-range of 33-1400 nm. Regarding in vivo toxicological assays, no robust alterations were recorded in functional, morphological and behavioral end-points analyzed, although a significant adhesion of IOT particles on zebrafish chorion was observed, without a prejudice of embryo hatching. Under applied conditions, iron ore particles did not present harmful effects to the initial stages of zebrafish development, and the particle size range and potential interactions with SiO2 content might be behind such effect.

RESUMO

The discrimination improvement of an array of four highly sensitive 30 MHz gas quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensors was performed and compared to a similar system based on a 12-MHz QCM. The sensing polymeric films were ethyl cellulose (EC), poly-methyl methacrylate (PMMA), Apiezon L (ApL), and Apiezon T (ApT) and they were coated over the AT-cut QCM devices by the drop casting technique. All the sensors had almost the same film thickness (0.2 µm). The fabricated QCM sensor arrays were exposed to three different concentrations, corresponding to 5, 10, and 15 µL, of ethanol, ethyl acetate, and heptane vapors. The steady state sensor responses were measured in a static system at a temperature of 20 °C and relative humidity of 22%. Our results showed that the 30-MHz sensors have a higher sensitivity than 12-MHz ones (around 5.73 times), independently of the sensing film and measured sample. On the other hand, principal component analysis and discriminant analysis were performed using the raw data of the responses. An improvement of the classification percentage between 12 MHz and 30 MHz sensors was found. However, it was not sufficient, especially for low concentrations. Furthermore, using partition coefficient and discriminant analysis (DA), an improvement of 100% classification of the three samples was achieved for the case of the 30-MHz sensor array.

RESUMO

One of the intended applications for the modification of ion exchange membranes with polyaniline (PAni) is to use it as a matrix to include chemical species that confer a special property such as resistance to fouling or ion selectivity. In particular, the inclusion of polyelectrolyte molecules into the PAni matrix appears to be the way to modulate these properties of selective membranes. Therefore, it must be clearly understood how the polyelectrolyte is incorporated into the matrix of polyaniline. Among the results obtained in this paper using poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) and an electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance, the amount of polyelectrolyte incorporated into PAni is found to be proportional to the PSS concentration in solution if its value is between 0 and 20 mM, while it reaches a maximum value when the PSS in solution is greater than 20 mM. When the anion exchange membranes are modified with these composite deposits, the transport number of chloride was found to decrease progressively (when the PSS concentration in solution is between 0 and 20 mM) to reach a practically constant value when a concentration of PSS greater than 20 mM was used.

RESUMO

Ceramic foams were fabricated without using melting pots through the direct foaming of compacted powder mixtures of commercial quartz (SiO2) with fluxing agents (Na2CO3 and CaO) and a foaming agent (Na2SiO3·5H2O) at a relatively low temperature range (850-870 °C). The effects of the pressing pressure of the powders, the foaming time, foaming temperature, and mixture content were evaluated. The obtained cellular solid materials presented an acceptable volumetric expansion at a pressing pressure of 4 t. The materials only presented porosity at a minimum temperature of 850 °C and at a minimum time of 30 min. All the foamed samples showed an acceptable symmetric expansion and non-appreciable fissures. The study of the mixture content through the statistical software MODDE® shows that the porosity of the samples was principally affected by the Na2SiO3 content and the foaming temperature. The samples obtained at the optimum controlling factors proposed by this statistical software presented an apparent density, porosity, and mechanical strength of 1.09 ± 0.03 g/cm3, 56.01% ± 1.12%, and 3.90 ± 0.16 MPa, respectively. Glass and ceramics foams such as those obtained in this work become attractive as insulation materials in applications where high temperatures occur due to their higher melting points.

RESUMO

Finding the source or provenance of quartz grains occurring in a specific location allows us to constrain their transport pathway, which is crucial information to solve diverse problems in geosciences and related fields. The optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) sensitivity (light intensity per unit mass per unit radiation dose) has a high capacity for discrimination of quartz sediment grains and represents a promising technique for provenance analysis. In this study, we tested the use of quartz OSL sensitivity (ultraviolet emission) measured under different preheating temperatures and with blue light stimulation at room temperature (~20 °C) for sediment provenance analysis. Quartz OSL sensitivity measured at 20 °C is positively correlated with the sensitivity of an OSL signal measured using procedures (preheat at 190 °C for 10 s, blue stimulation at 125 °C and initial 1 s of light emission) to increase the contribution of the fast OSL component, which has been successfully applied for sediment provenance analysis. The higher OSL signal intensity measured without preheating and with light stimulation at room temperature allows the use of lower given doses, thus reducing measurement time. Additionally, the OSL sensitivity measured at 20 °C in polymineral silt samples of a marine sediment core is also suitable for provenance analysis, as demonstrated by comparison with other independent proxies. OSL signals obtained through light stimulation at room temperature have thus the potential to considerably expand measurement possibilities, including in situ measurements using portable OSL readers.

RESUMO

Defects in the crystalline structure of quartz facilitate the connection with the alkali hydroxides, since under a high alkalinity condition (e.g., in concrete), the Si-O bonds of quartz are easily broken. This study set out to investigate the influence of the deformation structures of quartz on its susceptibility to the alkali⁻silica reaction. A granite, a protomylonite, and a mylonite were selected for this study. Using optical microscopy, the quartz grains contained in these rocks were quantified and their texture characterized. The quartz samples extracted from the rocks were analyzed by magnetic nuclear resonance, to evaluate their potential for dissolving silica as well as changes in their atomic scale before and after the reaction with alkali hydroxides. These analyses were compared with the results of the accelerated mortar bar test. The study showed that the quartz with intense undulatory extinction and deformation bands denotes the most favorable condition to the development of the alkali⁻silica reaction. However, on an atomic scale, the slightly deformed grains were highly prone to react. Thus, in a high alkalinity condition, over a long period of time, any quartz tends to develop the alkali⁻silica reaction, regardless of the deformation degree of the grain.

RESUMO

This paper presents research on the influence of quartz deformation in aggregates for the development of the alkali-silica reaction in concrete and its relationship with silica dissolution. The study also compares these characteristics with the field behavior of such rocks in concrete. The paper proposes parameters to classify the different degrees of deformation of quartz. Transmission electron microscopy showed the presence of walls even in slightly deformed quartz, which indicate the presence of the internal paths available to react with the alkaline concrete pore solutions and point to the potential development of an alkali-silica reaction. The presence of the deformation bands in the quartz grains leads to the alkali aggregate reaction occurring more rapidly. The visible spectrophotometer test was performed to evaluate the dissolution potential of the different samples of deformed quartz, which confirmed that the reactivity of the quartz increases as the deformation of the crystalline structure increases. The parameters established in the present study could be verified by analyzing the behavior of reactive and innocuous aggregates from the buildings.

RESUMO

The potential use of hybrid nanomaterials based on inorganic optically active nanoparticles known as quantum dots (QDs) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) has been proposed by several authors as light-controllable nanocatalyzers, moreover, the immobilization within or over silica based supports represents an advantage over bulk-dispersed systems. However, the implications of the immobilization of such hybrid photoactivatable catalyzing systems have not been clarified with detail. Here, we present a thorough study of the functional photoactive efficiency and recycling of immobilized CdS QDs and HRP systems with different configurations, immobilized over silanized silica quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensors, allowing an accurate measure of the immobilized mass of each component and its correlation with the initial reaction rate of conversion of Amplex Red (AR) to resorufin. As well, the conversion efficiency is compared between the different systems and also to non-immobilized QD-HRP complexed systems.

RESUMO

The extraction of calcareous chitin from shrimp cephalothorax was successfully achieved using a subcritical water treatment to attain a deproteinization up to 96%. The treatments also increased the crystalline domain size in the α-chitin fibers. An experimental design of Taguchi allowed the optimization of experiments. The macroelements identified in all samples were Ca, P, S, K, Cl and Al, whereas Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Br and Sr were also detected as microelements. The assigned crystalline phases by XRD were α-chitin, calcite, HAP and traces of quartz. The presence of these phases was corroborated by ATR-FTIR and SEM-EDS analyses. The highest content of α-chitin (82.2wt%) was obtained for the 0.17 chitin:dH2O (wt/wt) ratio for 30min treatment at 260°C. Noteworthy, this treatment promotes the crystallization of both minerals as microcrystals of calcite and nanocrystals of hydroxyapatite with needle and flake shapes as well as intermediate morphologies.
