RESUMO
This study evaluated the effects of dose of equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) and its splitting in different days of the synchronization protocol on reproductive performance of primiparous and multiparous Nellore cows. In the present study, 2,536 Nellore cows (1,634 primiparous and 902 multiparous) were assigned to receive in a 2 × 2 factorial design 1) an intravaginal progesterone (P4) device and 2.0 mg of estradiol benzoate (EB) on day -11, 12.5 mg (i.m.) of dinoprost tromethamine (PGF), 300 IU (i.m.) of eCG, 0.6 mg (i.m.) of estradiol cypionate (ECP), and P4 device withdrawal on day -2, followed by TAI on day 0 (n = 632 cows, being 409 primiparous and 223 multiparous; 300-2), 2) 300 IU (i.m) of eCG administered on days -4 and -2 (150 IU of eCG/day; n = 637 cows, being 412 primiparous and 225 multiparous; 300-4-2), 3) 400 IU (i.m.) of eCG administered on day -2 (n = 633 cows, being 406 primiparous and 227 multiparous; 400-2), and 4) 400 IU (i.m) of eCG administered on days -4 and -2 (200 IU of eCG/day; n = 634 cows, being 407 primiparous and 227 multiparous; 400-4-2). Individual cow BCS was assessed on days -11, 0 (timed-AI), and 31 of the study. Body condition score of the animals was classified into LOW or HIGH using the threshold of 2.75 (≤2.75 = LOW; >2.75 = HIGH). For primiparous cows, an eCG splitting effect was observed on follicle size, as cows receiving eCG on days -4 and -2 of the synchronization protocol had a larger follicle than cows administered eCG only on day -2. For day 31 P/AI, primiparous cows receiving 400-4-2, regardless of BCS, had a greater P/AI than cows from other treatments. Administering 400-4-2 to LOW BCS cows also resulted in greater P/AI than all other treatments assigned to LOW BCS cows. For multiparous cows, no treatment effect was observed for follicle size, estrus expression, and day 31 P/AI (P ≥ 0.21). In summary, increasing the dose and splitting the dose of eCG positively impacted the pregnancy rates of primiparous cows under a BCS ≤2.75, but no effects were detected on multiparous cows.

Breastfeeding is recognized worldwide as the best option for infant feeding. Expressing breast milk is an alternative for mothers to provide their infants all the benefits of maternal milk. During breast milk expression, mothers receive a distinct kind of sensory stimulation, because there is no direct bodily or affective interaction with their infants, many women report feeling isolated, generating a love-hate relation with pumping, and even low levels of satisfaction while expressing breast milk. While it is well known that the prefrontal, parietal, and temporal cortices play important roles in the emotional and cognitive processing of maternal stimuli, knowledge about how these cortical areas function during breastfeeding is lacking. This study was designed to characterize EEG activity in the prefrontal and parietal cortices and the affective scores of primiparous breastfeeding mothers during two conditions of milk expression: breast milk expression and direct breastfeeding. Participants reported higher valence and arousal and a pleasant state during direct breastfeeding. In the direct breastfeeding condition, both prefrontal areas showed a higher absolute power (AP) of the slow bands, with a lower AP of the alpha band in the parietal cortex. A lower correlation between frontopolar and dorsolateral areas with a higher correlation between prefrontal and parietal cortices was obtained mainly in the right hemisphere. This EEG activity could be linked to an internal state of focused attention and, simultaneously, open monitoring of the environment that suggests an integration of the motive-emotional and cognitive processes necessary for adequate mother-baby interaction during direct breastfeeding.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of early weaning (EW) on body composition, hormone concentrations and metabolites, and reproductive performance of Nelore cows in the subsequent breeding season (BS). Suckled cows that became pregnant by timed-AI (TAI) in the 2020-BS were exposed in 2021 to early weaning at 150 d (27 primiparous [PRI] and 74 multiparous [MUL]) or conventional weaning (CW) at 240 d postpartum (30 PRI and 77 MUL). Body weight (BW) and body condition score (BCS) were determined at 2020-BS, EW, CW, prepartum, and 2021-BS. Blood samples were collected at EW, CW, prepartum (54.75â ±â 0.56 d prepartum), and 2021-TAI and assayed for insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-I), non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA), and ß-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) concentrations. In 2021-BS, cows were exposed to a P4/E2-based protocol for TAI at day 0 (D0), and a second TAI was performed at D22 in females detected with luteolysis (D20) by Doppler ultrasound. The presence of corpus luteum (CL) on D10, estrous expression, and dominant follicle (DF) diameter, and blood perfusion (BP) on D2 and D0 were determined. Data were analyzed by ANOVA or logistic regression of SAS as a 2â ×â 2 factorial with main factors of parity (PRI or MUL) and weaning strategy (EW or CW). An interaction of parity and weaning strategy was not observed (Pâ >â 0.1), but the weight (kg) and BCS were greater (Pâ <â 0.05) in MUL cows at the five timepoints, and EW cows were heavier than CW at the moment of CW (541 vs. 493 kg; and 5.3 vs. 4.3), prepartum (551 vs. 506 kg; and 5.2 vs. 4.4) and 2021-BS (475 vs. 450 kg; and 4.5 vs. 3.7). Plasma urea concentration at 2021-BS was greater (Pâ =â 0.01) for PRI than for MUL. A parity-by-time interaction was observed (Pâ ≤â 0.05) for concentrations of IGF-I, NEFA, and BHB. PRI cows had greater (Pâ ≤â 0.05) concentrations of IGF-I at EW and greater (Pâ ≤â 0.05) prepartum concentrations of NEFA and BHB than MUL cows. The proportion of cows with CL at D10 was not affected (Pâ >â 0.1) by weaning but was greater (Pâ <â 0.05) in MUL than in PRI cows (40.4 vs. 15.7%). The diameter of DF and proportion of BP on D0 were greater (Pâ <â 0.05) in EW cows than in CW cows. The pregnancy rate (P/AI, %) at the first TAI was greater (Pâ <â 0.05) in EW cows (60% vs. 45%), whereas no difference (Pâ >â 0.1) was observed at the second TAI. Cumulative P/AI (first and second TAIs) was greater (Pâ <â 0.05) in EW cows (81% vs. 63%). In conclusion, weaning at 150 d in Nelore cattle is a strategy to successfully recover the parous cow's body condition and to improve pregnancy success in the next BS, regardless of the cow's parity order.
The nutritional condition and body energy reserves at parturition are important factors that can affect the reproductive performance of suckled Nelore cows. Also, decreasing the weaning time can benefit the cow's metabolic status. The present study evaluated the effect of two periods of weaning (150 vs. 240 d) on the reproductive performance of the Nelore dam in the subsequent breeding season. The results of the present study indicate that early weaning: 1) improves the body condition, rump fat thickness, and metabolic condition of Nelore cows for the subsequent breeding season; 2) provides better ovarian follicle growth and blood perfusion during the subsequent timed artificial insemination program; 3) enhances the pregnancy rates in the subsequent breeding season.

This research communication describes the reproductive and productive parameters and somatic cell count (SCC) of primiparous and multiparous cows from specialized dairy Holstein herds in South region of Brazil, and correlates these parameters using test-day records. A total of 24 011 records of animals from 75 producers obtained between 2017 and 2018 were used. The variables analyzed included milk production, SCC, milk fat, protein and urea nitrogen contents and reproductive characteristics (number of services per conception, service period and percentage of pregnant cows). Data were analyzed using multivariate logistic regression and the statistical differentiation between the classes of SCC and milk production. Milk production, SCC, number of services per conception and service period were all higher in multiparous cows. The percentage of pregnant cows was higher when the SCC was less than 200 000 cells/ml and was higher in primiparous cows. There was no adverse effect of milk production on reproductive parameters in high producing cows (>40 kg milk/d), however, the percentage of pregnant cows with this production level was significantly higher in multiparous cows. In conclusion, the milk production level need not affect the reproduction of specialized dairy cows if the animals are kept under adequate environmental conditions.

Apenas o ICIQ-VS (sintomas vaginais) e o ICIQ-SF permaneceram associados à FV na análise multivariada (OR 1,32 e OR 1,25, respectivamente).
Introduction and hypotheses: Vaginal laxity (VL) is a common complaint and is associated with vaginal birth, multiparity, changes in the integrity of vaginal and muscular tissue, symptoms of urinary and prolapse and worse sexual function. Despite being common, the pathophysiology of VL is poorly investigated and underreported. Objective: To verify the prevalence of VL in primiparous undergoing vaginal birth or c- section; and its association with clinical, obstetric, urinary, intestinal and sexual factors associated for its occurrence. Methods: This is a cross-sectional observational study, developed at the Hospital das Clínicas of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (HC-UFMG) between July 2021 and January 2023. The inclusion criteria were: primiparous women who had a vaginal or cesarean section during the study period, who had no complaints of VL during pregnancy and who signed the informed consent form. Clinical and obstetric data were collected, and all participants responded to questionnaires on the impact of urinary incontinence, vaginal symptoms and sexual distress (ICIQ-SF, ICIQ-VS and FSDS-R) at recruitment and six months after birth. In the statistical analysis, for the association between the predictor variables and the outcomes of interest, the Chi-Square test was used for categorical variables; and the Mann-Whitney test for continuous variables. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression was performed, considering vaginal laxity as the outcome. In all statistical calculations, the significance level was 0.05. Results: One hundred participants were included for data analysis. The prevalence of VL in primiparous women was 8%. In the univariate analysis, stress and urgency urinary incontinence (UUI), coital incontinence and intestinal constipation were associated with VL symptoms. However, only UUI and coital incontinence were related to VL, in the multivariate analysis. The ICIQ-VS and ICIQ-SF scores showed a significant association with VL symptoms (p=0.015 and p=0.028, respectively). The ICIQ-VS, FSDS-R and ICIQ-SF scores increased the risk of VL by one-fold in participants in the univariate analysis. Only ICIQ-VS (vaginal symptoms) and ICIQ-SF remained associated with VL in the multivariate analysis (OR 1.32 and OR 1.25, respectively). Conclusion: The prevalence of VL in primiparous women was lower than that reported in other studies and showed an association with the occurrence of vaginal symptoms, urgency urinary incontinence and coital incontinence, six months postpartum.

Management of calves and heifers directly influence the future productivity of dairy animals. However, the pre-production stage is often neglected by farmers, as young cows do not yet produce milk and, therefore, revenue, while representing an important part of the total cost of the property. This study aimed to identify and determine the economic value of factors influencing the production in the first lactation of heifers in a herd. This was a case study carried out on a family property in the municipality of Patrocínio, state of Minas Gerais, using data from 54 heifers. Qualitative characteristics (sire, maternal grandsire, amount of colostrum consumed, antibiotics use on the first day of life; application of prostaglandin to induce estrus, application of prostaglandin for resynchronization, use of progesterone implant for resynchronization, occurrence of retention of placenta and/or abortion, induction of lactation) and quantitative characteristics (weight at 90 days, average daily gain at 90 days and age at first mating) were evaluated. Variables influencing the production in the first lactation were the application of antibiotics, retained placenta, induction of lactation and age at mating. The differences in milk revenue were -R$ 2,381.21 for the use of antibiotics in each female, -R$ 299.85 for each heat loss for the first mating, -R$ 5,043.11 for each lactation induction, -R$6,841.16 for each retained placenta with abortion and - R$1,060.96 for each case of retained placenta without abortion. Knowing the productive and economic consequences of each of these items provides the producer with subsidies for decision making, such as planning management strategies that avoid such losses, and choosing options to maximize the economic efficiency of production.

We aimed to compare the effect of three estradiol benzoate (EB) doses on follicular wave emergence (FWE) and dominant follicle growth of suckled Nelore cows submitted to TAI (D0). On a random day of estrous cycle (D-10), multiparous (MULT; n=36) and primiparous (PRIM; n=20) suckled Nelore cows received an intravaginal progesterone (P4) device and were assigned in three groups. Cows in the EB-1 (n=20), EB-1.5 (n=15) or EB-2 (n=21) groups received, respectively, an im treatment with 1, 1.5 or 2 mg EB. A subgroup (n=10-13 cows/group) were subject to daily ovarian evaluations from D-10 to D0. On D-2, P4 devices were removed, and all cows received the same treatment: 1 mg estradiol cypionate, 0.53 mg sodium cloprostenol, and 300 IU eCG. Statistical analyses were performed considering only the main effects of treatment group and parity order. The proportion of cows with a synchronized FWE and the moment of the FWE did not differ (p>0.05) among the treatment groups (overall: 80% [28/35] and 4.1 ± 0.4 days); however, the FWE occurred earlier (p=0.007) in MULT (3.8 ± 0.2 days) than PRIM (5.1 ± 0.4) cows. The proportion of animals detected in estrus was greater (86% [31/36] vs. 70% [14/20]; p=0.02) and the dominant follicle was larger on D-2 (9.7 ± 0.3 mm vs. 7.8 ± 0.7 mm; p=0.006) and D0 (11.9 ± 0.4 mm vs. 10 ± 0.5 mm; p=0.008) in MULT than PRIM cows. In conclusion, the three EB doses presented similar efficiency to synchronize the FWE in suckled Nelore cows. Moreover, a delayed FWE and smaller dominant follicle is observed in PRIM cows, contributing to the reduced reproductive performance in this parity category when using similar TAI protocols of MULT cows.

The main objective of this study was to analyze the effects of the inbreeding degree in high-producing primiparous dairy cows genotypically and phenotypically evaluated and its impacts on production and reproductive parameters. Eighty Holstein-Friesian primiparous cows (age: ~26 months; ~450 kg body weight) were previously genomically analyzed to determine the Inbreeding Index (II) and were divided into two groups: low inbreeding group (LI: <2.5; n = 40) and high inbreeding group (HI: ≥2.5 and ≤5.0; n = 40). Genomic determinations of production and reproductive parameters (14 in total), together with analyses of production (12) and reproductive (11) phenotypic parameters (23 in total) were carried out. Statistically significant differences were obtained between groups concerning the genomic parameters of Milk Production at 305 d and Protein Production at 305 d and the reproductive parameter Daughter Calving Ease, the first two being higher in cows of the HI group and the third lower in the LI group (p < 0.05). For the production phenotypic parameters, statistically significant differences were observed between both groups in the Total Fat, Total Protein, and Urea parameters, the first two being higher in the LI group (p < 0.05). Also, significant differences were observed in several reproductive phenotypic parameters, such as Number of Services per Conception, Calving to Conception Interval, Days Open Post Service, and Current Inter-Partum Period, all of which negatively influenced the HI group (p < 0.05). In addition, correlation analyses were performed between production and reproductive genomic parameters separately and in each consanguinity group. The results showed multiple positive and negative correlations between the production and reproductive parameters independently of the group analyzed, being these correlations more remarkable for the reproductive parameters in the LI group and the production parameters in the HI group (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the degree of inbreeding significantly influenced the results, affecting different genomic and phenotypic production and reproductive parameters in high-producing primiparous cows. The determination of the II in first-calf heifers is crucial to evaluate the negative effects associated with homozygosity avoiding an increase in inbreeding depression on production and reproductive traits.
ABSTRACT The aim of the article was to analyze the influence of physical exercise during pregnancy, correlating its practice with the fetal maternal outcome. The study was observational, descriptive, quantitative and retrospective, with interviews conducted with primiparous mothers who were in the postpartum service in a public maternity hospital in Joinville, SC. The questionnaires asked about previous information on the postpartum women, pregnancy conditions, physical exercises performed during pregnancy and data about the newborn (NB). The postpartum women were divided into two groups: active (n = 110) and inactive (n = 122), allowing the analysis of the different outcomes between the groups. It was shown that the active group was more likely to obtain adequate weight gain during pregnancy (OR 1,556) and normal delivery (OR 1,899). On the other hand, it was more likely that the newborn was small for gestational age (SGA) (OR 2,436), considering the 95% confidence interval. The data from the present study suggest that physical activity during pregnancy brings benefits to both maternal and newborn health, provided that it is performed in a regular, well-oriented manner and within a limit of intensity and duration.
Abstract BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare infection of the subcutaneous tissue and the fascia that is rapidly progressive and deadly, requiring early and aggressive surgical debridement to decrease mortality. The objective of this study was to describe a rare case of genital necrotizing fasciitis after operative vaginal delivery. CLINICAL CASE: A 30 years old primiparous woman with a history of vaginal infection by Ureaplasma. Instrumented delivery was attended at 39 weeks, repairing right mid-lateral episiotomy without complications and discharge after 48 hours. On the fifth day of the puerperium she went to the emergency department for severe perineal pain and fever, finding perineal hematoma and right gluteus with erythema around, indurated and with vaginal crepitation with fetid hemato-purulent secretion. The laboratories reported leukocytosis and anemia, wound cultures showed polymicrobial infection and pelvic ultrasound diagnosed 2 well-defined collections in dermal and muscular planes. Management was initiated with broad-spectrum antibiotics plus washing and daily surgical debridement for 5 days. Subsequently, it was placed with VAC therapy for 7 days until granulation was achieved; and then, surgical washes were continued for 5 more days. On the 18th day, the wound was closed without complications. In her sixth week of follow-up she has a scarred wound, without pain or fecal or urinary incontinence; only refers to hypoesthesia of the scar, but with satisfactory evolution. CONCLUSION: The ideal is to establish the diagnosis as early as possible to decrease morbidity and mortality, immediately offer multidisciplinary care that allows the best surgical outcomes to be achieved, and increases survival.
RESUMO
This study evaluated the effect of birth weight and weight gain during the suckling phase on the piglet daily weight gain during the nursery phase (21-61 days of age). Piglets (n= 534) derived from 55 first-parity sows were weighed at birth, weaning, and end of the nursery phase. The data were analyzed according to a completely randomized experimental design, with three classes of birth weight (BW) and two classes of weight gain during the suckling phase (SDWG). High BW and low SDWG piglets were 0.2kg lighter at weaning than low BW and high SDWG animals (P< 0.05). However, at the end of the nursery phase, this situation was inverted, with high BW and low SDWG piglets 2.20kg heavier (P< 0.05). Low BW and high SDWG piglets were heavier at weaning and at the end of the nursery phase than low BW and low SDWG piglets (P< 0.05). At the same time, intermediate and high BW and low and high SDWG piglets presented body weight differences at weaning (P< 0.05), but not at the end of the nursery phase (P< 0.05). Piglets with 1.25 to 2.30kg BW and low weight gain during suckling presented a partial compensatory growth during the nursery phase.(AU)

In face of the few reports found in national literature analyzing the potential influence of parturition number in serum proteinogram and biochemical profile in the peripartum period of high yielding dairy cows, the aim of the present study was to comparatively evaluate the dynamics of these serum constituents' concentrations in blood samples obtained from primiparous and multiparous Holstein cows, 60 and 30 days prepartum and in the day of parturition. Data were analyzed by repeated measures variance analysis (ANOVA) and differences between groups and moments were analyzed by Tukey's test. Results were considered significant when P<0.05. Parity influenced levels of total protein, albumin, globulins, magnesium, cholesterol, which were higher in multiparous cows, as well as concentrations of ceruloplasmin, total calcium, chloride and alkaline phosphatase activity, which were higher in primiparous cows. Parturition influenced serum concentrations of ceruloplasmin (+58%), transferrin (-25%), haptoglobin (+33%), total protein (-17%), globulins (-25%), immunoglobulin A (-43%), immunoglobulin G (-24%), total calcium (-12%), inorganic phosphorus (-10%), chloride (+5%), sodium (+4%), cholesterol (-23%), triglycerides (-38.6%), as well as activities of aspartate aminotransferase (+14%) and alkaline phosphatase (+28%). A decrease in serum levels of total calcium, inorganic phosphorus, cholesterol and triglycerides was more pronounced in multiparous than in primiparous cows. These results demonstrate that the interpretation of proteinogram and serum constituents should take into consideration lactation number and the moment of parturition as relevant factors in high yielding dairy cows in the transition period.(AU)

The objective of this study was to evaluate the production, consumption, and energy balance parameters of primiparous 3/4 and 7/8 Holstein × Gir (HG) dairy cows fed two diets of differing energy levels during the postpartum period. At the beginning of the study, 28 days prepartum, the average weight of both genetic groups was 498 ± 12 kg and body condition score (BCS) was 3.5 ± 0.05. At the end of the study, 61 days postpartum, the 3/4 HG cows had higher weight and body condition scores than the 7/8 HG (456 ± 8 and 429 ± 8 kg and 3.13 ± 0.03 and 2.94 ± 0.03 BCS for 3/4 HG and 7/8 HG, respectively). Milk from cows fed the high-energy diet had higher percentages of fat, protein, lactose, and total dry extract than cows fed the low-energy diet. Cows fed the high-energy diet had higher net energy intake (95.3 ± 1.9 vs. 88.1 ± 2.1 MJ/day) and higher energy balance (3.64 ± 2.13 vs - 6.02 ± 2.30 MJ/day). The 3/4 HG cows displayed higher energy for maintenance (33.1 ± 0.4 MJ/day) than the 7/8 HG (31.5 ± 0.5 MJ /day). In conclusion, although the primiparous 3/4 HG were heavier than the 7/8 HG and had a higher body condition score, no differences in milk produced up to 60 days postpartum were observed. The higher energy diet during the postpartum period increased energy balance, resulting in higher production of milk fat, protein, and lactose.

Abstract BACKGROUND: The incidence of cervical agenesis with functional endometrium is unknown, but it's estimated to be less than 0.1% in the general population. The reproductive prognosis in Müllerian malformations is limited and, in most cases, requires multiple surgical interventions to be improved. CASE REPORT: A 21-year-old primiparous patient with a history of agenesis of the cervix and two upper thirds of the vagina. Attended a first-time obstetric appointment at 38.1 weeks of gestation. She refers that the pregnancy was conceived spontaneously and denied complications during pregnancy. A cesarean section was scheduled to end the pregnancy, which had no trans or post-operative maternal-fetal morbidity. CONCLUSIONS: Spontaneous pregnancy in patients with congenital agenesis of the cervix should be addressed in time to ensure a favorable obstetric outcome.
This study was conducted in order to find the influence of body condition score of sows at the time of first weaning on its performance on the second delivery. For this study, 41 gilts females were selected by their backfat thickness (BT) at the weaning of the first birth. After that, the females were distributed into three groups according to BT: thin (BT ≤15 mm), average condition (15,1 to 18 mm BT) and fat (>18 mm BT). The parameters were once more evaluated at the second birth. The BT at weaning had a positive correlation with the piglet average weight at birth (p=0.005 and r=0.429), with the BT in the second birth (p=0.005 and r=0.429) and in the second weaning (p=0.002 and r=0.466). The BT had no significant correlation with the weaning to estrus interval, with the number of piglets born alive, number of stillbirths, mummified and litter weight at birth. It can be concluded that body condition of gilts weaning at first birth had no effect on their subsequent performance and the backfat thickness at weaning influences the average piglet weight at birth, backfat thickness at the subsequent birth and weaning.(AU)

Abstract OBJECTIVE To describe the labor curve and the dilation-time ratio of the first stage of labor in a group of patients of the Hospital de Ginecoobstetricia Luis Castelazo Ayala. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective and descriptive study with 370 healthy pregnancy primiparous patients between 37 and 41 gestation weeks admitted in the Obstetrics & Gynecology Hospital "Luis Castelazo Ayala" of the Mexican Social Security Institute. All patients were attended of eutocic delivery without any complication. We reviewed the partogram and the progression of cervical dilation on the first stage of labor. By observing the relationship between time and cervical dilation we described we elaborate a labor curve. RESULTS Labor in its entirety lasted on average 862 minutes (14 hours and 12 minutes). The delivery labor curve graphed was a slope upward curve, with an acceleration phase from 4 centimeters dilated, from that moment the duration of labor average was 234 minutes (3 hours and 54 minutes), with a dilating pattern of 0.4-0.7 cm / h. CONCLUSION The curve of the first stage of labor we studied has an upslope pattern, with an increased acceleration from 4 centimeters of dilation. Our curve differs from the classical sigmoid curve care delivery Dr. Friedman in their basic morphology, however both curves agree that labor enters its active phase in the 4 centimeters of dilation.
