RESUMO
This study documents the natural accumulation of mollusk shells on an elevated rocky shore carved into the calcareous rocks of the La Popa formation at Punta Roca (Atlántico), covering an estimated area of 0.35 km2. Hydrodynamic transport and differential exposure to environmental conditions are the primary factors contributing to shell deposition. A total of 58 mollusk species were identified, including 30 bivalves and 28 gastropods. The Veneridae was the most prominent, with the highest number of species (7) and shells comprising 64.22 % of the total. Key species contributing to the accumulation include the bivalves Anomalocardia cf. flexuosa, Polymesoda cf. arctata, Leukoma pectorina, Tivela mactroides, Crassostrea rhizophorae, and the gastropod Vitta virginea. These species are primarily characteristic of estuarine environments, with the exception of T. mactroides. Notably, the first recorded occurrence of the non-native gastropod Naria turdus (Cypraeidae) on the Colombian Caribbean coast was documented. The accumulations exhibit varying degrees of abrasion, fragmentation, encrustation, and bioerosion, with some shells appearing almost intact, indicating differences in origin and transport mechanisms. The extraction of shells for ornamental purposes poses a significant challenge to this natural accumulation.

Introduction: We conducted an extensive, sex-oriented real-world data analysis to explore the impact and safety of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and selective COX-2 inhibitors (coxibs) on cancer treatment outcomes. This is particularly relevant given the role of the COX-2/PGE2 pathway in tumor cell resistance to chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Methods: The study applied a retrospective cohort design utilizing the TriNetX research database consisting of patients receiving cancer treatment in 2008-2022. The treated cohorts included patients who were prescribed with coxibs, aspirin or ibuprofen, while individuals in the control cohort did not receive these medicines during their cancer treatment. A 1:1 propensity score matching technique was used to balance the baseline characteristics in the treated and control cohorts. Then, Cox proportional hazards regression and logistic regression were applied to assess the mortality and morbidity risks among patient cohorts in a 5-year follow-up period. Results: Use of coxibs (HR, 0.825; 95% CI 0.792-0.859 in females and HR, 0.884; 95% CI 0.848-0.921 in males) and ibuprofen (HR, 0.924; 95% CI 0.903-0.945 in females and HR, 0.940; 95% CI 0.917-0.963 in males) were associated with improved survival. Female cancer patients receiving aspirin presented increased mortality (HR, 1.078; 95% CI 1.060-1.097), while male cancer patients also had improved survival when receiving aspirin (HR, 0.966; 95% CI 0.951-0.980). Cancer subtype specific analysis suggests coxibs and ibuprofen correlated with survival, though ibuprofen and aspirin increased emergency department visits' risk. Secondary analyses, despite limited by small cohort sizes, suggest that COX inhibition post-cancer diagnosis may benefit patients with specific cancer subtypes. Discussion: Selective COX-2 inhibition significantly reduced mortality and emergency department visit rates. Further clinical trials are needed to determine the optimal conditions for indication of coxibs as anti-inflammatory adjuvants in cancer treatment.

This article presents an ingestion procedure towards an interoperable repository called ALPACS (Anonymized Local Picture Archiving and Communication System). ALPACS provides services to clinical and hospital users, who can access the repository data through an Artificial Intelligence (AI) application called PROXIMITY. This article shows the automated procedure for data ingestion from the medical imaging provider to the ALPACS repository. The data ingestion procedure was successfully applied by the data provider (Hospital Clínico de la Universidad de Chile, HCUCH) using a pseudo-anonymization algorithm at the source, thereby ensuring that the privacy of patients' sensitive data is respected. Data transfer was carried out using international communication standards for health systems, which allows for replication of the procedure by other institutions that provide medical images. OBJECTIVES: This article aims to create a repository of 33,000 medical CT images and 33,000 diagnostic reports with international standards (HL7 HAPI FHIR, DICOM, SNOMED). This goal requires devising a data ingestion procedure that can be replicated by other provider institutions, guaranteeing data privacy by implementing a pseudo-anonymization algorithm at the source, and generating labels from annotations via NLP. METHODOLOGY: Our approach involves hybrid on-premise/cloud deployment of PACS and FHIR services, including transfer services for anonymized data to populate the repository through a structured ingestion procedure. We used NLP over the diagnostic reports to generate annotations, which were then used to train ML algorithms for content-based similar exam recovery. OUTCOMES: We successfully implemented ALPACS and PROXIMITY 2.0, ingesting almost 19,000 thorax CT exams to date along with their corresponding reports.

Purpose: Although the Americas and Europe have historically dominated the global research landscape, emerging economies - Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS) have significantly increased their contributions in recent years. This article studies clinical trial trends in the BRICS nations between 2018 and 2022 and compares it with trends in the G7 nations (comprising Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, the USA, and the European Union). This will help stakeholders in planning drug development strategies. Materials and Methods: Data were collected from the World Health Organization International Clinical Trials Registry Platform (WHO ICTRP) and the World Bank database. An electronic search was done for the total number of trials registered between January 1, 2018, and March 15, 2023. Information was analyzed based on the year of registration, therapeutic area, type of intervention, sponsorship, and type of special population. The trial density indices (TDIs) were calculated based on population (Xi) and gross domestic product (GDP) (Yi) using author-derived formulae. Results: Altogether 2, 77, 536 trials from the BRICS and G7 were registered. China and the US had the most trials among the BRICS and G7, respectively. Between 2018 and 2022, the gap between the BRICS and G7 steadily reduced. The most common indication for clinical trials among the BRICS was cancer. Based on population, the TDI was the highest in China and the lowest in Russia. In proportion to the GDP, the TDI was maximum in Russia and minimum in India. Conclusion: There is a remarkable reduction in the gap in clinical trial trends between the BRICS and G7 nations. Among the BRICS, India and China are at the forefront in drug development. There is scope for improvement in trial density based on India's population and GDP. Stakeholders are likely to utilize the strengths of the BRICS as an attractive destination for investment in this area.

Beach volleyball (BV) is an intermittent sport characterised by short-duration and highly demanding activities with low intensity periods. Establishing if players' jump ability is influenced by sand granulometry is a useful information for sport scientists, coaches and players. This study aimed to assess the possible differences in the kinetics parameters of the vertical jump on different types of sand performed by BV players. Twelve elite female players performed six countermovement jumps (CMJs) in three different surface conditions (fine sand, reference, coarse sand) in a random counterbalanced order (216 jumps). A generalised mixed model approach detected differences for CMJ model in total duration (p: 0.016), eccentric phase duration (p: 0.007), concentric phase duration (p: 0.011), time to peak power (p: < 0.001), time to peak force (p: 0.014), maximum rate force development concentric phase (p: 0.004), maximum velocity (p: 0.028) and peak power eccentric (p: 0.018). Coarse sand decreases the time spent jumping compared to fine sand, without a penalty to jump height. Coaches and athletes should take this information into account to enhance their understanding of practice strategies and game conditions. One might anticipate a faster pace in games played on coarse sand and a slower pace on fine sand.

Residual lignocellulosic biomass (RLB) is a valuable resource that can help address environmental issues by serving as an alternative to fossil fuels and as a raw material for producing various value-added molecules. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the use of lignocellulosic waste in South America, a review was conducted over the last 4 years. The review focused on energy generation, biofuel production, obtaining platform molecules (such as ethanol, hydroxymethylfurfural, furfural, and levulinic acid), and other materials of interest. The review found that Brazil, Colombia, and Ecuador had the most RLB sources, with sugarcane, oil palm, and rice crop residues being the most prominent. In South America, RLB is used to produce biogas, syngas, hydrogen, bio-oil, biodiesel, torrefied biomass, pellets, and biomass briquettes. The most studied and produced value-added molecule was ethanol, followed by furfural, hydroxymethylfurfural, and levulinic acid. Other applications of interest that have been developed with RLB include obtaining activated carbon and nanomaterials. Significant progress has been made in South America in utilizing RLB, and some countries have been more proactive in regulating its use. However, there is still much to learn about the potential of RLB in each country. This review provides an updated perspective on the typification and valorization of residual biomass in South America and discusses the level of research and technology being applied in the region. This information can be helpful for future research on RLB in South America.

Background: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is characterised as a chronic inflammatory disease of the axial skeleton. The force platform is an option for performing the postural assessment of these individuals. Objectives: To review and evaluate the behaviour of the centre of pressure (CoP) variables during the postural control examination in patients with AS compared to a control group. Method: A systematic review, registered in PROSPERO, that followed the PRISMA Statement. A search was carried out in the following databases: Medline, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, and Scielo, from 1945 to 2023. Studies were selected that aimed to understand the use of the force platform for the assessment of postural control. The risk of bias assessment was performed using the AXIS tool. Results: Five studies were included, with a total of 247 participants. The assessment of risk of bias presented high scores in the AXIS tool. Patients with a diagnosis of AS presented increased thoracic kyphosis in most of the studies, as well as large displacements in the anteroposterior (AP) and mediolateral (ML) directions, and altered total mean velocity (TMV) and frequency, indicating worse postural stability. Regarding the functional status, the most used questionnaires were the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index (BASFI), Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Metrology Index (BASMI) and Bath Ankylosing Disease Activity Index (BASDAI). Conclusion: Patients with ankylosing spondylitis present postural instability, verified by means of higher values of centre of posture variables. Clinical implications: Individuals with ankylosing spondylitis presented postural instability and balance deficit. Therefore, exercises for balance training and postural control are essential in the clinical management of these patients.

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) models in the classification of electromyographic (EMG) signals represents a significant advancement in the design of control systems for prostheses. This study explores the development of a portable system that classifies the electrical activity of three shoulder muscles in real time for actuator control, marking a milestone in the autonomy of prosthetic devices. Utilizing low-power microcontrollers, the system ensures continuous EMG signal recording, enhancing user mobility. Focusing on a case study-a 42-year-old man with left shoulder disarticulation-EMG activity was recorded over two days using a specifically designed electronic board. Data processing was performed using the Edge Impulse platform, renowned for its effectiveness in implementing AI on edge devices. The first day was dedicated to a training session with 150 repetitions spread across 30 trials and three different movements. Based on these data, the second day tested the AI model's ability to classify EMG signals in new movement executions in real time. The results demonstrate the potential of portable AI-based systems for prosthetic control, offering accurate and swift EMG signal classification that enhances prosthetic user functionality and experience. This study not only underscores the feasibility of real-time EMG signal classification but also paves the way for future research on practical applications and improvements in the quality of life for prosthetic users.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Sensitization to Blomia tropicalis is associated with asthma in various tropical and subtropical countries; however, information about the specific molecular components associated with this disease is scarce. Using molecular diagnosis, we sought to identify B tropicalis allergens associated with asthma in Colombia. METHODS: Specific IgE (sIgE) to 8 B tropicalis recombinant allergens (Blo t 2, 5, 7, 8, 10, 12, 13, and 21) was determined using an in-house ELISA system in asthma patients (n=272) and controls (n=298) recruited in a national prevalence study performed in several Colombian cities (Barranquilla, Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, and San Andrés). The study sample included children and adults (mean [SD] age, 28 [17] years). Cross-reactivity between Blo t 5 and Blo t 21 was evaluated using ELISA-inhibition. Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the reliability and validity of the My Jump 2® app in measuring jump height, flight time, and peak power among elite women beach volleyball players on sand surfaces. Methods: Eleven elite female beach volleyball players (aged 23.6 ± 6.2 years; weight 66.3 ± 5.8 kg; height 174.4 ± 5.8 cm; with 8.4 ± 4.8 years of professional experience) participated in this study. Each player performed six countermovement jumps in a wooden box filled with sand on a force platform while simultaneously recording a video for subsequent analysis using the My Jump 2® app. Results: We found excellent agreement for flight time, jump height and peak power between observers (ICC = 0.92, 0.91 and 0.97, respectively). No significant differences between force platform and My Jump 2® app were detected in the values obtained for the three variables (P > 0.05). For the force platform and the My Jump 2® app, we found a good agreement measuring jump height and flight time (ICC = 0.85 and 0.85, respectively). However, we only found a moderate agreement for peak power (ICC = 0.64). The difference in jump height showed a limit of agreement between -4.10 and 4.74 cm in Bland-Altman, indicating a high level of agreement between the two measurement tools. Conclusion: Based on our findings, the My Jump 2® app reveals a valid tool for measuring jump height and flight time of CMJ on sand surfaces. However, more caution is needed when measuring peak power.

The COVID-19 pandemic has posed challenges for education, particularly in undergraduate teaching. In this study, we report on the experience of how a private university successfully addressed this challenge through an active methodology applied to a microbiology discipline offered remotely to students from various health-related courses (veterinary, physiotherapy, nursing, biomedicine, and nutrition). Remote teaching was combined with the "Adopt a Bacterium" methodology, implemented for the first time on Google Sites. The distance learning activity notably improved student participation in microbiology discussions, both through word cloud analysis and the richness of discourse measured by the Shannon index. Furthermore, feedback from students about the e-learning approach was highly positive, indicating its effectiveness in motivating and involving students in the learning process. The results also demonstrate that despite being offered simultaneously to students, the methodology allowed for the acquisition of specialized knowledge within each course and sparked student interest in various aspects of microbiology. In conclusion, the remote "Adopt a Bacterium" methodology facilitated knowledge sharing among undergraduate students from different health-related courses and represented a valuable resource in distance microbiology education.

A fully reusable electrochemical device is proposed for the first time made from laser cutting and a homemade conductive ink composed of carbon and nail polish. As a sensor substrate, we applied polymethyl methacrylate, which allows the surface to be renewed by simply removing and reapplying a new layer of ink. In addition to the ease of renewing the sensor's conductive surface, the design of the device has allowed for the integration of different forms of analysis. The determination of L-Dopa was performed using DPV, which presented a linear response range between 5.0 and 1000.0 µmol L-1, and a LOD of 0.11 µmol L-1. For dopamine, a flow injection analysis system was employed, and using the amperometric technique measurements were performed with a linear ranging from 2.0 to 100.0 µmol L-1 and a LOD of 0.26 µmol L-1. To demonstrate its applicability, the device was used in the quantification of analytes in pharmaceutical drug and synthetic urine samples.

Numerous papers report the efficiency of the automatic interpretation capabilities of commercial algorithms. Unfortunately, these algorithms are proprietary, and academia has no means of directly contributing to these results. In fact, nothing at the same stage of development exists in academia. Despite the extensive research in ECG signal processing, from signal conditioning to expert systems, a cohesive single application for clinical use is not ready yet. This is due to a serious lack of coordination in the academic efforts, which involve not only algorithms for signal processing, but also the signal acquisition equipment itself. For instance, the different sampling rates and the different noise levels frequently found in the available signal databases can cause severe incompatibility problems when the integration of different algorithms is desired. Therefore, this work aims to solve this incompatibility problem by providing the academic community with a diagnostic-grade electrocardiograph. The intention is to create a new standardized ECG signals database in order to address the automatic interpretation problem and create an electrocardiography system that can fully assist clinical practitioners, as the proprietary systems do. Achieving this objective is expected through an open and coordinated collaboration platform for which a webpage has already been created.

Protein glycosylation is a post-translational modification involving the addition of carbohydrates to proteins and plays a crucial role in protein folding and various biological processes such as cell recognition, differentiation, and immune response. The vast array of natural sugars available allows the generation of plenty of unique glycan structures in proteins, adding complexity to the regulation and biological functions of glycans. The diversity is further increased by enzymatic site preferences and stereochemical conjugation, leading to an immense amount of different glycan structures. Understanding glycosylation heterogeneity is vital for unraveling the impact of glycans on different biological functions. Evaluating site occupancies and structural heterogeneity aids in comprehending glycan-related alterations in biological processes. Several software tools are available for large-scale glycoproteomics studies; however, integrating identification and quantitative data to assess heterogeneity complexity often requires extensive manual data processing. To address this challenge, we present a python script that automates the integration of Byonic and MaxQuant outputs for glycoproteomic data analysis. The script enables the calculation of site occupancy percentages by glycans and facilitates the comparison of glycan structures and site occupancies between two groups. This automated tool offers researchers a means to organize and interpret their high-throughput quantitative glycoproteomic data effectively.

The Gram-negative, strictly anaerobic bacterium Megasphaera elsdenii was first isolated from the rumen in 1953 and is common in the mammalian gastrointestinal tract. Its ability to use either lactate or glucose as its major energy sources for growth has been well documented, although it can also ferment amino acids into ammonia and branched-chain fatty acids, which are growth factors for other bacteria. The ruminal abundance of M. elsdenii usually increases in animals fed grain-based diets due to its ability to use lactate (the product of rapid ruminal sugar fermentation), especially at a low ruminal pH (<5.5). M. elsdenii has been proposed as a potential dietary probiotic to prevent ruminal acidosis in feedlot cattle and high-producing dairy cows. However, this bacterium has also been associated with milk fat depression (MFD) in dairy cows, although proving a causative role has remained elusive. This review summarizes the unique physiology of this intriguing bacterium and its functional role in the ruminal community as well as its role in the health and productivity of the host animal. In addition to its effects in the rumen, the ability of M. elsdenii to produce C2-C7 carboxylic acids-potential precursors for industrial fuel and chemical production-is examined.

This work aims to obtain recycled carbon fibre and develop an application for this new material. The carbon fibres were obtained by recycling aerospace prepreg waste via the pyrolysis process. The recycled fibres were combined with an Araldite LH5052/Aradur LY5053 epoxy resin/hardener system using manual lay-up and vacuum bagging processes. For comparison, the same resin/hardener system was used to produce a composite using commercial carbon fibre. The recycled and commercial composites were subjected to flexural, tensile and Mode I testing. Fracture aspects were analysed via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The pyrolysis process did not affect the fibre surface as no degradation was observed. The fracture aspect showed a mixture of failure in the recycled composite laminate and interlaminar/translaminar failure near the surface of the commercial composite caused by flexural stress. Flexural and tensile tests showed a loss of mechanical strength due to the recycling process, but the tensile values were twice as high. The sand ladder platform was the project chosen for the development of a product made with recycled carbon fibres. The product was manufactured using the same manufacturing process as the specimens and tested with a 1243 kg car. The method chosen to design, manufacture and test the prototype sand ladder platform made of recycled carbon fibre was appropriate and gave satisfactory results in terms of high mechanical strength to bending and ease of use.

Motor and somatosensory pathway dysfunction due to degeneration of long tracts in hereditary spastic paraplegias (HSP) indicates that postural abnormalities may be a relevant disease feature. However, balance assessments have been underutilized to study these conditions. How does the static balance of individuals with HSP with eyes open and closed differ from healthy controls, and how does it relate to disease severity? This cross-sectional case-control study assessed the static balance of 17 subjects with genetically confirmed HSP and 17 healthy individuals, evaluating the center of pressure (COP) variables captured by a force platform. The root-mean-square of velocities and mean of displacements amplitudes in mediolateral and anteroposterior axes were correlated with disease severity. All COP parameters' performances were significantly impaired in HSP subjects compared to controls (p < 0.001 for all comparisons). COP with eyes open and closed differed for all variables within the HSP group, whereas in the control group, differences were observed only for anteroposterior velocity and amplitude. Spastic Paraplegia Rating Scale presented moderate direct correlations with the most COP variables (Rho = - 0.520 to - 0.736). HSP individuals presented significant postural instability with eyes open and to a greater extent with eyes closed, corroborating the clinical findings of somatosensorial and proprioceptive pathways dysfunction. The degrees of proprioceptive and motor impairments are mutually correlated, suggesting that similar pathophysiological mechanisms operate for the degeneration of these long tracts. COP parameters can be seen as disease severity biomarkers of HSP, and they should be assessed in future clinical trials.

PURPOSE: We investigated the aqueous humor proteome and associated plasma proteome in patients with infectious or noninfectious uveitis. METHODS: AH and plasma were obtained from 28 patients with infectious uveitis (IU), 29 patients with noninfectious uveitis (NIU) and 35 healthy controls undergoing cataract surgery. The proteins profile was analyzed by SomaScan technology. RESULTS: We found 1844 and 2484 proteins up-regulated and 124 and 161 proteins down-regulated in the AH from IU and NIU groups, respectively. In the plasma, three proteins were up-regulated in NIU patients, and one and five proteins were down-regulated in the IU and NIU patients, respectively. The results of pathway enrichment analysis for both IU and NIU groups were related mostly to inflammatory and regulatory processes. CONCLUSION: SomaScan was able to detect novel AH and plasma protein biomarkers in IU and NIU patients. Also, the unique proteins found in both AH and plasma suggest a protein signature that could distinguish between infectious and noninfectious uveitis.

Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) based on micro/nanostructured materials with different natures has received increasing attention for the analysis of a wide variety of analytes. However, up to now, only a few studies have shown the application of simple platforms in MALDI-MS for the identification of intact proteins. The present work reports on the application of copper oxide particles (Cu2O PS), obtained by a greener route, in combination with low amounts of 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHB) as a novel hybrid platform. The combined Cu2O PS@DHB matrix, containing only 2.5 mg mL-1 of particles and 10 mg mL-1 of DHB, was easily applicable in MALDI-MS without surface modification of target plates. Under optimal conditions, the analysis of intact proteins up to 150,000 Da was possible, including immunoglobulin G, bovine serum albumin, and cytochrome C with adequate spot-to-spot signal reproducibility (RSD < 10%). In addition, the analysis of glycopeptides from IgG digests was carried out to prove the multipurpose application of the Cu2O PS@DHB platform in the low m/z range (2500-3000 Da). From the obtained results, it can be concluded that the optical and surface properties of as-synthesized Cu2O PS are likely to be responsible for the superior performance of Cu2O PS@DHB in comparison with conventional matrices. In this sense, the proposed user-friendly methodology opens up the prospect for possible implementation in bioanalysis and diagnostic research.

Como consecuencia de la emergencia sanitaria de la COVID-19, la enseñanza académica se reformuló y generó que la educación asumiera la virtualidad como espacio para generar aprendizajes y desarrollar las capacidades clínicas. El objetivo del estudio fue determinar la relación que existe entre el uso del entorno virtual Moodle y el desarrollo de la capacidad clínica de diagnóstico en estudiantes de Odontología en una Universidad privada de Cusco, Perú. Se realizó un estudio analítico de corte transversal con una población de 215 estudiantes y una muestra a 139 estudiantes de Odontología, que cursaban el área de clínica, seleccionados mediante un muestreo no probabilístico por conveniencia; los datos se recolectaron mediante un formulario Google. Como resultados se obtuvo que los estudiantes de la muestra tienen entre 19 a 40 años de edad y predomina el sexo femenino. El 56,8 % usa el entorno virtual Moodle de manera eficiente y el 40,3 % regularmente. El 62,6 % logró desarrollar, medianamente, la capacidad clínica de diagnóstico y el 25,2 % en un nivel alto. En cuanto a la relación del uso del entorno virtual Moodle y el desarrollo de la capacidad clínica de diagnóstico, los resultados muestran valores de p = 0,001 y Rho = 0,280. Se concluye que existe una correlación positiva y se comprueba la asociación establecida en el objetivo del estudio.
As a consequence of the COVID-19 health emergency, academic teaching was reformulated and caused education to assume virtuality as a space to generate learning and develop clinical capabilities. The objective of the study was to determine the existing relationship between the use of Moodle virtual environment and the development of clinical diagnostic capacity in Dentistry students at a private University in Cusco, Peru. A cross-sectional analytical study was carried out with a population of 215 students and a sample of 139 Dentistry students, who were studying the clinical area, selected through non-probabilistic convenience sampling. Data was collected using a Google form. As results, it was obtained that the students in the sample are between 19 and 40 years old and the female sex predominates. 56.8% use the Moodle virtual environment efficiently and 40.3% regularly. 62.6% managed to develop, moderately, the clinical diagnostic capacity and 25.2% at a high level. Regarding the relationship between the use of Moodle virtual environment and the development of clinical diagnostic capacity, the results show values of p = 0.001 and Rho = 0.280. It is concluded that there is a positive correlation and the association established in the objective of the study is verified.
