The age and daily growth of fish are registered through the deposition of increments in their otoliths, which are concretions formed by the precipitation of substances present in the endolymphatic fluid, mainly calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Faced with the need to fill some of the gaps in the knowledge on the occurrence and duration of the initial stages of snapper species' life cycles in the Abrolhos Bank, this study aimed to describe the growth rates, age, and period of pelagic larval duration (PLD) of three snapper species during the larval pre-settlement phase, in the Abrolhos Bank region. The post-larvae were captured using light traps. Otoliths were removed from 117 samples of snapper species; however, only 69 were viable for age estimation, of which 15 were Lutjanus analis, 25 were Lutjanus jocu, and 29 were Lutjanus synagris. Together, the samples presented individuals with total lengths ranging from 16.14 to 24.76 mm and ages from 21 to 39 days. Settlement marks were found for all three species, and the average PLD was ~25 days. The somatic growth of the snapper species was positively correlated with otolith growth. L. jocu presented the greatest daily growth compared to the other species. The three species use the Abrolhos Bank as a larval settlement site, demonstrating plasticity by using different habitats throughout their lives.

The morphology of otoliths determines the function they perform, and it is influenced by genetic and environmental factors. Knowing those relationships is necessary to understand the role of hearing in fish. The objectives of this work were: exploring the shape of the sulcus of the sagittal otolith in seven species of Sciaenidae, in relation to sound production, and analyzing whether the shape and size of the sulcus can be used as a phylogenetic character. For this purpose, geometric morphometry analysis was carried out using landmarks data. It was found that there is an influence of size on the shape of the sulcus, and significant differences were found between the shapes of the sulcus (permutational multivariate analysis of variance). Three general shapes of the sulcus were identified (using principal component analysis, canonical variate analysis, and clustering): (1) in species that produce sounds at dominant frequencies <350 Hz, the deformation of the sulcus showed a tendency towards circularity of the ostium; (2) in those species that produce sounds at frequencies >350 Hz, the ostium showed a flattened ovoid shape, and the cauda increased its length; (3) the species that do not produce sounds, did not show any modifications, relative to the form of consensus. Despite finding sister species that presented similar sulcus shapes in the phylogeny, the results did not confirm that this can be used as a phylogenetic character. This work discusses whether the combined effects of phylogenetic legacy and natural functional selection have led to convergent evolution for the sulcus form. The differences presented by the sulcus of species that occupy the same clade, could indicate that there is a displacement of characters. The sagittal otolith and the sensory macula associated with the sulcus acusticus are highly plastic structures that are subject to strong evolutionary pressure in relation to environmental and behavioral factors, resulting in great variability in shapes that can be associated with a specific character. The variation in the shape of the sulcus would allow the analysed species to coexist in the same coastal soundscapes, without losing their particular hearing needs, even in case of overlapping their spatial and temporal distribution areas.

Otolith microstructure analysis provides critical biological and ecological information about the early life history of fishes. This information is particularly important to interpret and predict population dynamics for socio-economically important fisheries species; nonetheless, several key assumptions underpin the use of otolith techniques. The authors validated the use of this analysis for cabezon (Scorpaenichthys marmoratus; Ayres, 1854), a long-lived, large-bodied cottid constituent of nearshore fisheries from Baja California, Mexico, to Alaska, USA. To test three critical assumptions, the authors coupled otolith and morphometric analyses from an opportunistic rearing study of cabezon eggs and larvae with a long-term time series of juvenile cabezon field collections. The authors confirmed the daily otolith increment deposition in laboratory-reared larvae, identified the timing of first otolith increment deposition and examined the relationship between otolith growth and somatic growth in field-collected juveniles, validating the use of otolith microstructure analysis in biological and ecological interpretations of early life-history traits for this species. The findings of this study also indicated that the absorption of yolk-sac reserves, and likely the transition to exogenous feeding, plays an important role in regulating otolith increment deposition. Finally, the authors found within-brood size-at-age variation, which may be an advantage for young fish in prey-limited environments.

Abstract Introduction: The Epley maneuver is applied in the treatment of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, the BPPV. However, dizziness and balance problems do not improve immediately after the treatment. Objective: In this study, the effectiveness of the head-shaking maneuver before the Epley maneuver was investigated in the treatment of BPPV. Methods: Between March 2020 and August 2020, ninety-six patients with posterior semicircular canal BPPV were analyzed prospectively. The patients were divided into two groups: patients who underwent the Epley maneuver only in the treatment (Group 1) and patients who underwent the Epley maneuver after the head-shaking maneuver (Group 2). The results of the Berg balance scale and dizziness handicap index were evaluated before the treatment and at the first week after the treatment. Results: The improvement in functional, emotional, and physical dizziness handicap index and Berg balance scale values after the treatment was found to be statistically significant in both groups. It was determined that the change in functional and physical dizziness handicap index and Berg balance scale values of the patients in Group 2 was statistically higher than those in Group 1. Although, the change in emotional dizziness handicap index values in Group 2 was higher than those in Group 1, no statistical significance was found between the groups. Conclusion: As a result of our hypothesis, we think that in the treatment of posterior semicircular canal BPPV, the otoliths adhered to the canal can be mobilized by the head-shaking maneuver, and this will contribute to the increase of the effectiveness of the Epley maneuver.


Resumo Introdução: A manobra de Epley é aplicada no tratamento da vertigem posicional paroxística benigna (VPPB). Entretanto, a tontura e os problemas de equilíbrio não melhoram imediatamente após o tratamento. Objetivo: Investigar a eficácia da manobra de balançar a cabeça antes da manobra de Epley no tratamento da VPPB. Método: De março de 2020 a agosto de 2020, 96 pacientes com VPPB de canal semicircular posterior foram analisados prospectivamente. Os pacientes foram divididos em dois grupos: pacientes que foram submetidos apenas à manobra de Epley no tratamento (Grupo 1) e pacientes que foram submetidos à manobra de Epley após a manobra de balanço da cabeça (Grupo 2). Os resultados da escala de equilíbrio de Berg e do dizziness handicap index foram avaliados antes do tratamento e na primeira semana após o tratamento. Resultados: A melhoria nos valores funcionais, emocionais e físicos do dizziness handicap index e da escala de equilíbrio de Berg após o tratamento foi estatisticamente significante em ambos os grupos. Foi determinado que a alteração nos valores funcionais e físicos do dizziness handicap indexe da escala de equilíbrio de Berg dos pacientes do Grupo 2 foi significantemente maior do que aqueles do Grupo 1. Embora a alteração nos valores do dizziness handicap index emocional no Grupo 2 tenha sido maior do que no Grupo 1, não houve significância estatística entre os grupos. Conclusão: Como resultado de nossa hipótese, acreditamos que no tratamento da VPPB do canal semicircular posterior os otólitos aderidos ao canal podem ser mobilizados através da manobra de balanço da cabeça, o que contribuirá para o aumento da eficácia da manobra de Epley.

In this study, otolith geochemical signatures (Element:Ca ratios) were used to investigate the long-term spatial shifts of the population structure of Isopisthus parvipinnis, Bigtooth corvina, an economically and ecologically important Brazilian fish species. Two-hundred and ninety-seven juvenile individuals from historical (1975) and contemporary (2018/2019) samples were collected in five subareas [São Paulo: North-NSP, Center-CSP and South-SSP; Paraná (PR) and Santa Catarina (SC)] of the shallow waters off the coast of the South Brazil Bight were analyzed. The main informative single elements were Co:Ca, Cu:Ca, Li:Ca, Mg:Ca, Mn:Ca, Ni:Ca, Na:Ca, and Rb:Ca. Multivariate analysis showed spatial differences in otolith chemical composition over the years. Samples from 1975 presented an overall low reclassification rate (58%), suggesting the existence of two population units: (1) SP + PR; and (2) SC. However, samples from 2018/2019 discriminated four distinct population units with a good overall reclassification (80%): (1) NSP; (2) CSP; (3) SSP + PR; and (4) SC. This spatial differentiation on the geochemical signatures probably reflects the effects of long-term temporal variability in oceanographic conditions, anthropogenic influence, and climate change on this coastal ecosystem. The data also corroborate and refines the population structure scenario of I. parvipinnis recently described using complementary phenotypic tags.

Abstract Introduction: More than 50% of pregnant women experience dizziness frequently in the first two gestational trimesters. During pregnancy, the changes in the metabolism of hormones are responsible for the ovarian cycle resulting in either peripheral or central vestibular alterations. The need for the study is to focus on the effect of changes during pregnancy on the vestibular evoked myogenic potential, an electrophysiological measure that investigates functions of the otolith structures. Objectives: The aim is to investigate the vestibular evoked myogenic potential responses during the first trimester of pregnancy. Methods: A total of 17 pregnant women and 17 non-pregnant women with age matched took part in this study. The cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential were recorded from the ipsilateral sternocleridomastoid muscle and the ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential were recorded from contralateral extraocular muscle in both groups. Results: Peak to peak amplitude of cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential and ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential was found to be significantly reduced in the responses obtained from first-trimester pregnant women when compared to that of non-pregnant women. Conclusions: Vestibular evoked myogenic potential tests exhibits a clinically significant reduced peak to peak amplitude in the first trimester of pregnancy, which indicates dysfunction in the otolith reflex pathway.


Resumo Introdução: Mais de 50% das mulheres grávidas apresentam tonturas frequentes nos primeiros dois trimestres da gravidez. Durante a gestação, as mudanças no metabolismo dos hormônios são responsáveis pelo ciclo ovariano, resultam em alterações vestibulares periféricas ou centrais. A necessidade do estudo é enfocar o efeito das mudanças durante a gravidez sobre o potencial evocado miogênico vestibular, uma medida eletrofisiológica que investiga as funções das estruturas otolíticas. Objetivo: Investigar as respostas do potencial evocado miogênico vestibular no primeiro trimestre da gravidez. Método: Participaram deste estudo 17 mulheres grávidas e 17 não grávidas com idades pareadas. O potencial evocado miogênico vestibular cervical foi registrado a partir do músculo esternocleidomastóideo ipsilateral e o potencial evocado miogênico vestibular ocular foi registrado a partir do músculo extraocular contralateral em ambos os grupos. Resultados: A amplitude pico a pico do potencial evocado miogênico vestibular cervical e do potencial evocado miogênico vestibular ocular estava significativamente reduzida nas respostas obtidas de mulheres grávidas no primeiro trimestre de gestação quando comparadas a de mulheres não grávidas. Conclusão: Os testes de potencial evocado miogênico vestibular mostram uma redução clinicamente significativa na amplitude pico a pico no primeiro trimestre da gravidez, o que indica disfunção na via otolítica reflexa.

The age and growth of fish populations is a critical issue for stock assessment, population dynamics and fishery management. Spawner biomass, mortality, growth, recruitment and age at maturity can be misconstrued if the age estimator is inaccurate. Age can be estimated by annuli count, but this requires expertise and is expensive. Otolith weight (OW) is a good indicator of how long a fish has lived, because OW increases during an individual's life. Seriola lalandi is a migratory fish and is an important resource for local fishermen in northern Chile. Aspects of its biology, i.e., age and growth, remain unknown, at least for the population annually arriving in northern Chile. Fish of a known age (n = 105; from 5.5 to 25.7 cm in FL) from yellowtail aquaculture facilities at Universidad de Antofagasta allowed us to estimate the growth rate of OW, and fish obtained from local fishermen (n = 71; from 37.9 to 109 cm in FL) allowed us to estimate the age and growth of S. lalandi from the analysis of OW, without the need for calibration. The following four models were fitted with the known ages and fork lengths: the von Bertalanffy growth function, the Gompertz and logistic models and the seasonalized von Bertalanffy growth function. The latter model showed the best adjustment (according to the Akaike information criterion) with the following parameters: L∞, 98.58 cm.; K, 0.59; t0, 0.07; ts, 0.84; and C, 0.97.

The authors estimated life-history parameters of a clupeid forage fish, Opisthonema medirastre, by sampling juveniles over the course of a year in the central region of the Galápagos Islands, Ecuador. They collected 160 juveniles on the south coast of Santa Cruz Island during the wet/warm season that were 16-48 mm standard length, were 30-88 days old, had hatched at the beginning of the wet/warm season and had grown at 0.4 mm day-1 . The results suggest that in Galápagos, O. medirastre reproduce during the wet/warm season mostly under neutral ENSO conditions.

Sciaenidae species (croakers and drums) are known for specializations in their sensory apparatus, such as otoliths and lateral line. Within this family, some Stelliferinae members remain taxonomically unresolved due to their cryptic aspects and low phenotypic disparities. Stellifer punctatissimus comprises a species complex putatively formed by three species on morphological grounds, but molecular data have indicated only two evolutionary lineages. Herein, we tested the hypothesis that this complex is composed of Stellifer gomezi (GM), S. menezesi (MN), and S. punctatissimus (PC), using the otolith shape and morphology to differentiate them. Seventy-seven sagittal otoliths (GM = 30, MN = 30, PC = 17) were photographed to outline the otolith contour by Elliptical Fourier descriptors. Ten otoliths for each group were used to detect shape variation in the sulcus acusticus through semilandmarks. Differences in otolith shape contour were recorded among the species by PERMANOVA (Pseudo-F = 4.02, df = 2, p < 0.001) and corroborated by the Linear Discriminant Analysis, which demonstrated three partially segregated groups with satisfactory re-classification rates. A larger sulcus acusticus (GM and MN), rounded projection (PC), and distinct rectangularity pattern were also recorded. Our results support the morphological hypothesis and thus contribute to narrowing the taxonomic gaps in Sciaenidae.


As espécies de Sciaenidae (corvinas e pescadas) são conhecidas por especializações nos aparatos sensoriais, como otólitos e linha lateral. Nesta família, alguns membros de Stelliferinae permanecem com sua taxonomia não resolvida devido às características crípticas e baixas disparidades fenotípicas. Stellifer punctatissimus supostamente compreende um complexo formado por três espécies, mas os dados moleculares têm indicado apenas duas linhagens evolutivas. Aqui, testamos a hipótese de que esse complexo é composto por Stellifer gomezi (GM), S. menezesi (MN), e S. punctatissimus (PC), usando a forma e morfologia do otólito para diferenciá-las. Setenta e sete otólitos sagita (GM = 30, MN = 30, PC = 17) foram fotografados para delimitar o seu contorno pelos descritores Elípticos de Fourier. Dez otólitos, por grupo, foram usados para detectar a variação de forma no sulcus acusticus através dos semilandmarks. Foram registradas diferenças na forma do otólito entre as espécies através da PERMANOVA (Pseudo-F = 4,02, df = 2, p < 0,001) e pela análise discriminante linear, demonstrando três grupos parcialmente segregados com taxas de reclassificação satisfatórias. Também foram registrados um sulcus acusticus mais largo (GM e MN), projeção arredondada (PC) e padrões alométricos distintos no índice de retangularidade. Nossos resultados apoiam a hipótese morfológica; assim, contribuem na redução das lacunas taxonômicas em Sciaenidae.

Advances in vestibular testing have now allowed us to test each semicircular canal as well as the utricle and saccule, independently. This has led to the discovery of new patterns of vestibular dysfunction that were once impossible to evaluate. This report describes the case of a 20-year-old woman with a 2-month history of recurrent dizziness. She had a complete audiovestibular assessment. The only abnormality observed was the absence of a cervical vestibular-evoked myogenic potential response for the right side, hence an isolated saccular dysfunction. In conclusion, isolated otolithic dysfunction is probably an overlooked and neglected clinical presentation. Its true incidence is unknown, and further research is needed to understand this clinical entity.

Otolith shape analysis is a powerful method for fish stock identification. We compared the otolith shape of Pagrus pagrus (Linnaeus 1758) along with its distribution in four south-western Atlantic regions where it is commercially fished: Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil, the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone (UA) and the Argentinian Exclusive Fishing Zone (AR). Otolith shapes were compared by Elliptical Fourier and Wavelet coefficients among specimens in a size range with similar otoliths, morphometric parameters and ages. Four potential stocks were identified: one in the AR, a second along the UA which included specimens from southern Brazil with well-marked opaque bands in its otoliths (MRS), the third in southern Brazil with faint or absent opaque bands in its otoliths (FRS) and the fourth along Rio de Janeiro. The difference in the otolith shape among regions followed differences reported using other stock identification techniques. The similarity between otoliths from UA and MRS (ANOVA-like, P > 0.01) can be explained by seasonal short-range migrations. Otoliths shape differences between MRS and FRS (ANOVA-like, P < 0.01) suggest that P. pagrus does not form a homogeneous group in southern Brazil.

Movement is a fundamental aspect of fish ecology, and it therefore represents an important trait to monitor for the management and conservation of fish populations. This is especially true for small benthic fish, as they often inhabit part of the catchment where their movement may be restricted by alterations to river connectivity due to human activity. Still, the movement of these small benthic fish remains poorly understood, partly because of their small size and their cryptic nature. This applies to Percilia irwini, an endangered small darter native to the south-central region of Chile. Its habitat has been affected by the presence of large hydroelectric dams and is currently threatened by the construction of several others. In this study, the authors investigated movement patterns of P. irwini from populations inhabiting different parts of the Biobío catchment, with different levels of connectivity due to natural and/or human-induced features. The authors combined chronological clustering with random forest classification to reconstruct lifelong movements from multi-elemental otolith microchemistry transects. The majority of the movements detected occurred in an undisturbed part of the catchment. These were directional upstream movements occurring between capture sites from the lower and the middle reaches of the river, representing a distance of nearly 30 km, a distance much larger than previously thought. Nonetheless, in the part of the catchment where connectivity was affected by human activity, no such movements were identified. This study shows that connectivity alteration could impede naturally occurring movement and further threaten the resilience of populations of P. irwini. Furthermore, the results presented are used to discuss advantages and disadvantages of microchemistry analysis for studying movement of small benthic fish.

RESUMO

The Chilean jack mackerel (Trachurus murphyi) is a predominantly Southeast Pacific Ocean species. It is relatively difficult to determine its age, and multiple studies of its growth off South America have produced markedly different sets of von Bertalanffy parameters. T. murphyi was first identified from New Zealand waters in the mid-1980s and has comprised part of the commercial landings of Trachurus species (along with Trachurus declivis and Trachurus novaezelandiae) since then. Results from 13 years of age determination of New Zealand samples using sectioned otoliths indicate that a partially validated age determination method has been developed, with a precision level (average percentage error) of 4.6%. The best available von Bertalanffy growth parameters for the New Zealand population (sexes combined) are as follows: L∞ , 51.9 cm fork length; K, 0.223 per year; t0 , -0.5 year. Analyses by sex showed that males have a significantly larger L∞ than females. Estimated annual catch-at-length and catch-at-age distributions from the fishery are presented for 2007-2019. There have been at least two episodes of immigration of T. murphyi from international waters, but little evidence of spawning success to maintain the New Zealand population.

ABSTRACT The genus Cichla is a highly diverse group, with 16 species already described. Externally, some species are very similar and discriminating between them may be very difficult. Nevertheless, discrimination of fish stocks is essential for management purposes. Morphometric analyses of otoliths have been successfully used to distinguish species and fish stocks, especially in marine environments. This study evaluated whether sagittal otolith shape can be used to discriminate among the species Cichla temensis, C. monoculus, and C. orinocensis, as well as within populations of C. temensis in rivers of the Amazon. Shape indices and Fourier coefficients were used to describe the shape of the otoliths. Among the groups of species, the morphology of the sagittal otolith of C. temensis was totally distinct from the species C. monoculus and C. orinocensis. While among populations of C. temensis, individuals from the Negro and Jatapú Rivers were different, regardless of the methods used. These results confirm the ability to differentiate species and populations by using the morphology of otoliths. However, more research is needed to verify the role of genetic versus environmental and biotic effects, and thus be able to explain the discrimination observed in otoliths.


RESUMO O gênero Cichla é bastante diverso, com 16 espécies descritas. Algumas espécies são externamente muito similares e sua discriminação pode ser bastante difícil. Ao mesmo tempo, a discriminação de estoques pesqueiros é essencial para propostas de manejo. Análises morfométricas em otólitos têm sido utilizadas com sucesso para a distinção de espécies e estoques pesqueiros, principalmente em ambientes marinhos. Este estudo avaliou se o formato do otólito sagittal pode ser utilizado para discriminar entre espécies Cichla temensis, C. monoculus e C. orinocensis, bem como dentro de populações de C. temensis em diferentes rios amazônicos. Índices de forma e coeficientes de Fourier foram utilizados para descrever a forma dos otólitos. Dentre as espécies, a morfologia do otólito sagittal do C. temensis mostrou ser totalmente distinta das espécies C. monoculus e C. orinocensis. Enquanto no grupo das populações de C. temensis, os indivíduos dos rios Negro e Jatapú mostraram-se diferentes independente dos métodos utilizados. Esses resultados confirmam a capacidade de diferenciação de espécies e populações através da morfologia dos otólitos. No entanto, são necessárias mais pesquisas para verificar o papel dos efeitos genéticos em comparação aos efeitos ambientais e bióticos para explicar a discriminação observada nos otólitos.

The white mullet Mugil curema supports several fisheries in the neotropical region; nevertheless, the population structure is still elusive. The aim of this study was to assess the presence of adult management units and nursery areas from five sampling sites throughout the Gulf of Mexico and northern Brazil using otolith microchemistry. The Li/Ca, Na/Ca, Mn/Ca, Sr/Ca, Ba/Ca and Pb/Ca ratios were measured in otolith core (juvenile stage) and edge (adult stage) (N = 131) using laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. Several ratios were significantly different between sampling sites for core and edge (P < 0.05). For otolith edge, permutational multivariate analysis of variance showed significant differences (P < 0.05) between all sampling sites from Mexico (except between Mecoacán and Tamiahua, P > 0.05) and between Mexico (pooled samples) and Brazil. Quadratic discriminant analyses showed jackknifed classification higher in the edge (66.6% and 99.5% for Mexico and Brazil plus Mexico, respectively) than in the core (46.3% and 76.5% Mexico and Brazil plus Mexico, respectively). The two cluster analyses based on the core microchemistry (Mexico and Brazil plus Mexico) produced three main clusters, which did not coincide with catchment areas. These results support the segregation of the M. curema adult life stages among several sampling sites from Mexico and Brazil; moreover, core analysis suggested that the nursery areas did not correspond to the capture sites or adults stocks.

This study evaluates the potential use of archaeological otoliths of Genidens barbus (Cuvier and Valenciennes) as a tool to study fish behavior and hunter-gatherers procurement strategies on the North Patagonian coast. The studied samples come from the San Antonio archaeological locality dated at ca. 1000-800 14C yr BP (Late Holocene). To assess whether exposure to fire significantly affects the otolith Sr:Ca and Ba:Ca ratios, burned and unburned modern lapilli otoliths have been analyzed by Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry and no statistically significant differences were found between the results of both treatments. Core-to-edge chemical time series were carried out on ancient otoliths (ca. 1000 14C yr BP) in order to study the fish life history. Three amphidromous patterns were found for ancient samples. The capture environments and seasons inferred by the otolith edge chemistry and marginal increase, respectively, suggest a location in high salinity water (estuary and sea) in summer. Finally, to estimate the size of archaeological fish, a linear regression between total length and otolith length was constructed using 70 modern catfish otoliths. The size variability (358-610 mm) might indicate the use of non-selective capture techniques, probably nets, by hunter-gatherer groups.

This study aimed to verify variations in the form of the sagitta otolith of Menticirrhus americanus as to their ontogeny, sex and stage of such structure. Ontogenetically were found significant differences (p < 0.05) for all shape indices (aspect ratios, shape factor, rectangularity, ellipticity, relative surface of sulcus acusticus) and also in the wavelet of the otolith. The CVA presented a 98.6% correct reclassification of the otolith between interval class. Sexual variations were found in the wavelet and in the relative surface of sulcus acusticus index. Between adult females and young females, differences were not detected in the wavelet and rectangularity, but significant differences were found in all other shape indices. The CVA presented a 79.6% correct reclassification of the otolith of the sexes and stages of life sampled. Young females and adults females showed highest correct percentage of classification. The results of this study demonstrate for the first time the influence of the ontogenetic variation and sexual in the form of the otoliths.(AU)
