RESUMO

The increase in the populations of root-knot nematode Meloidogyne enterolobii in various vegetables such as tomatoes grown under greenhouse conditions as well as increasing restrictions on the use of certain chemical nematicides have led to the search for new, effective management strategies, preferably ones that are sustainable biological alternatives. In this work, two formulations of the nematophagous fungus Metarhizium carneum, one concentrated suspension and one wettable powder, were evaluated under greenhouse conditions to reduce the M. enterolobii infestation in tomato plants. In addition, the effectiveness of the liquid formulation of M. carneum was compared with two biological and three chemical commercial nematicides. The results show that the two M. carneum formulations reduced the M. enterolobii population density by 78 and 66% in relation to the control treatment. In comparison, the liquid formulation of M. carneum and Purpureocillium lilacinum treatments reduced nematode population density by 72 and 43%, respectively, while for metam sodium preplanting applications followed by M. carneum applications during the tomato growth stage, the reduction was 96%. The alternate use of some chemical compounds plus the application of M. carneum as a biocontrol is a good starting strategy for managing M. enterolobii populations. These results confirm that M. carneum is a serious candidate for the short-term commercialization of an environmentally friendly biological nematicide.

RESUMO

Parasitic nematodes can cause damages worth 35 billion a year to agriculture, as the Brazilian Society of Nematology (SBN) estimates. Nematode control in agriculture is made by employing methods of crop rotation and destruction of infested plants. Nematicides are used to control nematodes in humans and animals. Caenorhabditis elegans is a free-living nematode, found in organic matter present in the soil. It has 40% of the genes with orthologs for human diseases and similarity with parasitic nematodes. Due to its characteristics it has been used as a biological model in research in molecular biology, neuroscience and toxicology. In order to standardize tests with the biological model C. elegans, extracts of yerba mate Ilex paraguariensis were used. Worm motility in all life stages was evaluated in defined time periods: 1h, 2h, 4h, 6h and 24h. Individual survival of the worms after adding the extracts. New bioactive compounds can be developed from the extraction of secondary products from plants and other organisms, aiding in the development of nematicides, and C. elegans can be used as a biomonitor in soil and aquatic environments.


Nematoides parasitas chegam a causar prejuízos de 35 bilhões ao ano à agropecuária, estima a Sociedade Brasileira de Nematologia (SBN), sendo utilizado para o seu controle na agricultura os métodos de rotação e remoção de culturas, além do uso de nematicidas para humanos e animais. Caenorhabditis elegans é um nematoide de vida livre, encontrado no solo e em matéria orgânica, possuindo 40% dos genes com ortólogos em doenças humanas e similaridade com nematoides parasitas. Devido às suas características vem sendo usado como modelo biológico em pesquisas de biologia molecular, neurociência e toxicologia. A fim de padronizar testes com o modelo biológico C. elegans foram utilizados extratos da erva mate Ilex paraguariensis, sendo avaliada a motilidade dos vermes de todos os estádios entre 1h, 2h, 4h, 6h e 24h, sendo observada a sobrevida dos vermes após adição dos extratos. Novos compostos bioativos podem ser desenvolvidos a partir da extração de produtos secundários de plantas e outros organismos, auxiliando no desenvolvimento de nematicidas, podendo ser utilizado o nematoide C. elegans como biomonitor do solo e de meios aquáticos.

A recent screen of 67,012 compounds identified a new family of compounds with excellent nematicidal activity: the ortho-substituted benzamide families Wact-11 and Wact-12. These compounds are active against Caenorhabditis elegans and parasitic nematodes by selectively inhibiting nematode complex II, and they display low toxicity in mammalian cells and vertebrate organisms. Although a big number of benzamides were tested against C. elegans in high-throughput screens, bioisosteres of the amide moiety were not represented in the chemical space examined. We thus identified an opportunity for the design, synthesis and evaluation of novel compounds, using bioisosteric replacements of the amide group present in benzamides. The compound Wact-11 was used as the reference scaffold to prepare a set of bioisosteres to be evaluated against C. elegans. Eight types of amide replacement were selected, including ester, thioamide, selenoamide, sulfonamide, alkyl thio- and oxo-amides, urea and triazole. The results allowed us to perform a structure-activity relationship, highlighting the relevance of the amide group for nematicide activity. Experimental evidence was complemented with in silico structural studies over a C. elegans complex II model as a molecular target of benzamides. Importantly, compound Wact-11 was active against the flatworm Echinococcus granulosus, suggesting a previously unreported pan-anthelmintic potential for benzamides.

The current study evaluated the anthelmintic effect of different extracts of Leucaena leucocephala, Parkia platycephala, and Senna alata on trichostrongylid eggs and infective larvae and determined the potential active components of each plant. Dried and macerated plant material was concentrated using rotaevaporation to obtain the crude extract (CE), followed by solvent partitioning to obtain hexanic (HexE), acetatic (AcE), and butanolic (BuE) extracts used for phytochemical analysis and anthelmintic efficacy testing in vitro. All the crude and partitioned extracts tested showed inhibition activity in the hatching of trichostrongylid eggs. Larvicidal efficacy was observed at CE concentrations of 2.5, 5.0, and 7.5 mg/mL for P. platycephala and S. alata. However, L. leucocephala CE did not significantly reduce the number of living larvae in the tested concentrations. Chromatographic analysis revealed several active metabolites; gallic acid, ellagic acid, naringin, morin, and kaempferol on AcE of P. platycephala; gallic acid, rutin, and ellagic acid on BuE of P. platycephala; and gallic acid and naringin on BuE of L. leucocephala. The extracts of P. platycephala, L. leucocephala, and S. alata leaves showed egg hatching inhibition and larvicidal activity, probably produced by tannins and flavonoids, which may act alone or by synergism.

This study investigates updated information in different search engines on the distribution, phytochemistry, pharmacology, and toxicology of Brugmansia suaveolens (Solanaceae) using the extracts or chemical compounds at present. This plant has been used in traditional medicine in different cultures as a hallucinatory, analgesic, aphrodisiac, nematicide, sleep inducer, and muscle relaxant, as well as a treatment for rheumatism, asthma, and inflammation. The flowers, fruits, stems, and roots of the plant are used, and different chemical compounds have been identified, such as alkaloids, volatile compounds (mainly terpenes), coumarins, flavonoids, steroids, and hydrocarbons. The concentration of the different compounds varies according to the biotic and abiotic factors to which the plant is exposed. The toxic effect of the plant is mainly attributed to atropine and scopolamine, their averages in the flowers are 0.79 ± 0.03 and 0.72 ± 0.05 mg/g of dry plant, respectively. Pharmacological studies have shown that an aqueous extract exhibits the antinociceptive effect, at doses of 100 and 300 mg/kg i.p. in mice. On the other hand, the ethanolic extract at 1000 mg/L, showed a nematocidal activity in vitro of 64% against Meloidogyne incognita in 72 h. Likewise, it showed a 100% larvicidal activity at 12.5 mg/L against Ancylostoma spp. In another study, the lethal activity of shrimp in brine from an ethanolic extract showed an LC50 of 106 µg/mL at double serial concentrations of 1000-0 (µg/mL). Although there are pharmacological and phytochemical studies in the plant, they are still scarce, which has potential for the examination of the biological activity of the more than one hundred compounds that have been reported, many of which have not been evaluated.

Two isolations of fungi from a bank of microorganisms in the Biological Sciences Laboratory at Escuela Superior Politécnica de Chimborazo were tested on the galling caused by Meloidogyne incognita in tomato seedlings grown in pots with substrate infested with a suspension of nematodes, with approximately 2000 juvenile stages (J2) from root galls of plants infested with M. incognita, taken from the Nematology laboratory of the Ecuadorian Agricultural Quality Assurance Agency (AGROCALIDAD). Pleurotus ostreatus was a fungus with nematicidal characteristics through production of toxins; while Trichoderma harzianum is a widely known fungus, although it is a plant growth promoter rather than a nematicide. The two fungi were formulated in wheat straw and rabbit manure. A complete randomized design (CRD) with three replications was used, with a chemical control (Fenamiphos) and an absolute control. Five grams of each formulation was applied per plant before the transplant. The number of galls in the roots, plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves and fresh and dry weight of the aerial part and roots of 180 tomato plants grown in greenhouse were evaluated at 60 days after transplant. The results showed that the two fungi reduced the number of galls and made it possible to obtain dry weights of the aerial and radicular part very close to the chemical control (10.09 and 3.39 g) with 8.68; 8.04; 2.96 and 3.25 g respectively. Besides Trichoderma harzianum proved to be a good promoter of root growth, therefore, the use of these bioformulates is a promising measure for the control of this phytonematode(AU)

Nematode parasites have a profound impact on humankind, infecting nearly one-quarter of the world's population, as well as livestock. There is a pressing need for discovering nematicides due to the spread of resistance to currently used drugs. The free-living nematode Caenorhabditis elegans is a formidable experimentally tractable model organism that offers key advantages in accelerating nematicide discovery. We report the screening of drug-like libraries using an overnight high-throughput C. elegans assay, based on an automated infrared motility reader. As a proof of concept, we screened the "Pathogen Box" library, and identical results to a previous screen using Haemonchus contortus were obtained. We then screened an in-house library containing a diversity of compound families. Most active compounds had a conjugation of an unsaturation with an electronegative atom (N, O, or S) and an aromatic ring. Importantly, we identified symmetric arylidene ketones and aryl hydrazine derivatives as novel nematicides. Furthermore, one of these compounds, (1E,2E)-1,2-bis(thiophen-3-ylmethylene)hydrazine, was active as a nematicide at 25 µm, but innocuous to the vertebrate model zebrafish at 50 µm. Our results identified novel nematicidal scaffolds and illustrate the value of C. elegans in accelerating nematicide discovery using a nonlabor-intensive automated assay that provides a simple overnight readout.

Control of phytonematodes is very hard and requires a combination of techniques to succeed. Alternative control through plant extracts may result in the discovery of nematicide substances. Research aimed at evaluating the effect of 33 plants submitted to aqueous extraction against Panagrellus redivivus in vitro. Concentrations were prepared at 1.25, 2.5, 5, 10, and 20%. Monitoring happened at 0, 6, 12, 24 and 30 hours after preparation. Counting considered dead nematodes subtracted from alive ones. Juveniles were also counted, and extract efficiency was expressed in percentage of control or stimuli. Data were submitted to variance analysis. Significant results got with the Scott-Knott test (5%), and multiple linear regression analysis. Extracts were observed acting as controllers, but also as stimulators to nematode reproduction. The best controlling performance was set by Carica papaya (-66% at 20%; -33.7% at 10%), Euphorbia milii (-37% at 20%), Psychotria carthagenensis (-25.5% at 2.5%), Clusia variegate (-22% at 20%), and Zamioculcas zamiifolia (-21.5% at 20%). Stimulator extracts were Mentha villosa at 10% (+148%) and 2.5% (+131.5%), followed by Aloe vera (+123% at 5%), Schinus molle (+112.5% at 10%), Schefflera arboricola (+93.5% at 5%), C. variegate (+89% at 5%), and S. molle (+88% at 5%). Some extracts kept population stable throughout the experiment, presenting lower control indexes. Besides an additive effect, there was an individual influence of concentration or time on control.(AU)


O controle de fitonematoides é muito difícil e requer uma combinação de técnicas para ter sucesso. O controle alternativo via extrato vegetal pode resultar na descoberta de substâncias nematicidas. Esta pesquisa objetivou avaliar o efeito de 33 plantas submetidas à extração aquosa contra Panagrellus redivivus in vitro. As concentrações foram preparadas a 1,25; 2,5; 5; 10; e 20%. O monitoramento ocorreu em 0, 6, 12, 24 e 30 horas após a preparação. Para a contagem, foram considerados nematoides mortos subtraídos dos vivos. Nematoides jovens também foram contados, e a eficiência dos extratos foi expressa em porcentagem de controle ou de estímulo. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância. Resultados significativos foram analisados pelos testes de Scott-Knott (5%) e análise de regressão múltipla. Foram observados extratos agindo como controladores, bem como estimuladores da reprodução de nematoides. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the active ingredient abamectin, either in isolation or in combination with fungicides and insecticides formulated for the industrial seed treatment, on the population of Meloidogyne javanica, tested under greenhouse and in vitro conditions. In both tests, the combination of the following treatments was assessed: abamectin; thiamethoxam; fludioxonil + metalaxyl-M + thiabendazole. Water was used as control for the in vitro assay, whereas under greenhouse conditions, controls were inoculated and not inoculated with M. javanica. The tests were conducted in a completely randomized design with six (in vitro) and ten (greenhouse) replicates. For in vitro studies the effect on hatching, motility, and mortality of juveniles of M. javanica was evaluated. Under greenhouse conditions, the soybean BRS 133 seeds were treated, and at 15, 30, and 60 days after inoculation (DAI) with M. javanica, plant measurements were recorded. The penetration of second stage juveniles (J2) was also evaluated at 15 DAI. At 30 DAI, galls, egg masses, nematodes/g of root, and final population were evaluated. At 60 DAI, the final population of nematodes in the roots was quantified. The treatments containing abamectin were the most effective in diminishing the hatching of juveniles. All treatments had an effect on nematode motility when compared to the control, and in thetreatment containing only abamectin, total juvenile mortality was observed. In greenhouse conditions,at 15 DAI, the treated soybean plants had the highest root mass and shoot length, differing statisticallyfrom the inoculated control. All treatments reduced the number of nematodes per gram of root, differingfrom the control. At 30 DAI, treatment efficiency was observed in reducing the final population of M.javanica, particularly the treatments using abamectin, and abamectin + thiamethoxam + fludioxonil +metalaxyl-M + thiabendazole. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a eficiência do ingrediente ativo abamectina, isolado ou em combinação com fungicidas e inseticidas formulados para o tratamento industrial de sementes, sobre a população de Meloidogyne javanica, in vitro e em casa de vegetação. Em ambos os ensaios, avaliou-se a combinação dos tratamentos: abamectina; thiamethoxam; fludioxonil + metalaxil-m + tiabendazol. Como controle utilizou-se água para o ensaio in vitro, e testemunhas inoculada e não inoculada com M. javanica, em casa de vegetação. Os ensaios foram realizados em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com seis (in vitro) e 10 (casa de vegetação) repetições. In vitro, avaliou-se o efeito sobre a eclosão, motilidade e mortalidade dos juvenis de M. javanica. Em casa de vegetação, as sementes da cultivar de soja BRS 133 foram tratadas e aos 15, 30 e 60 dias após a inoculação (DAI) com M. javanica foram realizadas mensurações fitométricas das plantas. Avaliaram-se, também, aos 15 DAI a penetração de juvenis de segundo estádio (J2); aos 30 DAI avaliou-se galhas, massas de ovos, nematoides/g de raiz e população final; e aos 60 DAI quantificou-se a população final de nematoides nas raízes. Os tratamentos contendo abamectina foram os mais eficientes em diminuir a eclosão dos juvenis. Todos os tratamentos apresentaram efeito na motilidade dos nematoides com relação à testemunha, sendo que no tratamento contendo apenas abamectina foi observada, também, a total mortalidade dos juvenis. Emcasa de vegetação, aos 15 DAI, as plantas de soja tratadas apresentaram maior massa fresca de raiz ecomprimento da parte aérea, diferindo estatisticamente da testemunha inoculada. Todos os tratamentosreduziram o número de nematoides por grama de raiz, diferindo da testemunha. Aos 30 DAI, observouseeficiência dos tratamentos em reduzir a população final de M. javanica, destacando-se os tratamentosabamectina e abamectina + thiamethoxam + fludioxonil + metalaxil-m + tiabendazole. The penetration of second stage juveniles (J2) was also evaluated at 15 DAI. At 30 DAI, galls, egg masses, nematodes/g of root, and final population were evaluated. At 60 DAI, the final population of nematodes in the roots was quantified. The treatments containing abamectin were the most effective in diminishing the hatching of juveniles. All treatments had an effect on nematode motility when compared to the control, and in thetreatment containing only abamectin, total juvenile mortality was observed. In greenhouse conditions,at 15 DAI, the treated soybean plants had the highest root mass and shoot length, differing statisticallyfrom the inoculated control. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a eficiência do ingrediente ativo abamectina, isolado ou em combinação com fungicidas e inseticidas formulados para o tratamento industrial de sementes, sobre a população de Meloidogyne javanica, in vitro e em casa de vegetação. Em ambos os ensaios, avaliou-se a combinação dos tratamentos: abamectina; thiamethoxam; fludioxonil + metalaxil-m + tiabendazol. Como controle utilizou-se água para o ensaio in vitro, e testemunhas inoculada e não inoculada com M. javanica, em casa de vegetação. Os ensaios foram realizados em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com seis (in vitro) e 10 (casa de vegetação) repetições. In vitro, avaliou-se o efeito sobre a eclosão, motilidade e mortalidade dos juvenis de M. javanica. Em casa de vegetação, as sementes da cultivar de soja BRS 133 foram tratadas e aos 15, 30 e 60 dias após a inoculação (DAI) com M. javanica foram realizadas mensurações fitométricas das plantas. Avaliaram-se, também, aos 15 DAI a penetração de juvenis de segundo estádio (J2); aos 30 DAI avaliou-se galhas, massas de ovos, nematoides/g de raiz e população final; e aos 60 DAI quantificou-se a população final de nematoides nas raízes. Os tratamentos contendo abamectina foram os mais eficientes em diminuir a eclosão dos juvenis. Todos os tratamentos apresentaram efeito na motilidade dos nematoides com relação à testemunha, sendo que no tratamento contendo apenas abamectina foi observada, também, a total mortalidade dos juvenis. Emcasa de vegetação, aos 15 DAI, as plantas de soja tratadas apresentaram maior massa fresca de raiz ecomprimento da parte aérea, diferindo estatisticamente da testemunha inoculada. Todos os tratamentosreduziram o número de nematoides por grama de raiz, diferindo da testemunha. Aos 30 DAI, observouseeficiência dos tratamentos em reduzir a população final de M. javanica, destacando-se os tratamentosabamectina e abamectina + thiamethoxam + fludioxonil + metalaxil-m + tiabendazole. Carbofuran is a nematicide insecticide with a broad spectrum of action. Carbofuran has noxious effects in several species and has been banned in the USA and Europe; however, it is still used in Brazil. Aquatic organisms are not only exposed to pesticides but also to manufactured nanoparticles, and the potential interaction of these compounds therefore requires investigation. The aim of this study was to examine the histopathological alterations in the gills of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) to determine possible effects of exposure to carbofuran, nitric acid-treated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (HNO3-MWCNTs) and the combination of carbofuran with nanotubes. Juvenile fish were exposed to different concentrations of carbofuran (0.1, 0.5, 2.0, 4.0 and 8.0mg/L), different concentrations of HNO3-MWCNTs (0.5, 1.0 and 2.0mg/L) or different concentrations of carbofuran (0.1, 0.5, 2.0, 4.0 and 8.0mg/L) with 1.0mg/L of HNO3-MWCNTs. After 24h of exposure, the animals were removed from the aquarium, the spinal cord was transversely sectioned, and the second gill arch was removed for histological evaluation. Common histological changes included dislocation of the epithelial cells, hyperplasia of the epithelial cells along the secondary lamellae, aneurism, and dilation and disarrangement of the capillaries. All the groups exposed to carbofuran demonstrated a dose-dependent correlation in the Histological Alteration Index; the values found for carbofuran and carbon nanotubes were up to 25% greater than for carbofuran alone. This result indicates an interaction between these toxicants, with enhanced ecotoxic effects. This work contributes to the understanding of the environmental impacts of nanomaterials on aquatic organisms, which is necessary for the sustainable development of nanotechnologies.

The present study aimed to evaluate the toxicity of aqueous extract of Chenopodium ambrosioides leaves. To measure acute toxicity, rats were administered 0, 0.3, 1.0, or 3.0 g/kg of aqueous extract from C. ambrosioides leaves by gavage. To analyze sub-chronic toxicity, rats were treated by oral gavage for 15 consecutive days with 0, 0.3, or 1.0 g/kg of extract of C. ambrosioides leaves. No animals from either trial exhibited any signs of toxicity. In the acute study, the highest dose of the extract led to an increase in the serum activities of alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) and a decrease in the serum levels of urea. In the sub-chronic test, rats treated with 1.0 g/kg for 15 days exhibited increased serum ALT activity and creatinine levels and mild cytoplasmic vacuolation of hepatocytes. The results indicate that aqueous extract from C. ambrosioides leaves produce slight hepatotoxic lesions in rats.

O objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar a eficiência de extratos aquosos das plantas medicinais, gervão (Verbena officinalis L.), mulungu (Erythrina mulungu Mart. ex Benth.), pau-amargo (Quassia amara L.), picão (Bidens pilosa L.) e tansagem (Plantago lanceolata L.), aplicados ao solo para o controle de Meloidogyne incognita, em casa de vegetação. Para tal, mudas de tomateiro de aproximadamente 10 cm de altura, foram transplantadas em vasos plásticos com 1 L de capacidade contendo uma mistura de solo: areia 2:1 (v/v). Em cada muda foi inoculado com uma suspensão aquosa contendo 3.000 ovos do nematoide. Após a inoculação das plantas, aplicaram-se ao solo 20 mL dos extratos aquosos das respectivas espécies de plantas estudadas, na concentração de 100 g L-1. No tratamento testemunha, adicionou-se ao solo apenas água ou o nematicida químico. O experimento foi montado em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com sete repetições, cada qual representada por um vaso contendo muda de tomateiro, sendo o experimento repetido uma vez. Avaliou-se altura da parte aérea, massa fresca de parte aérea e do sistema radicular, número de galhas e número de ovos. De todos os extratos botânicos avaliados, apenas os extratos aquosos de gervão e mulungu, controlaram o nematoide das galhas, quando comparado ao tratamento testemunha (apenas água) e apresentaram controle igual ao obtido com o uso do nematicida químico. Nenhum extrato aquoso afetou o desenvolvimento dos tomateiros. Novos estudos devem ser realizados em condições de campo para testar a eficiência desses extratos em condições de campo.


The aim of this study was to assess the efficiency of aqueous extracts of medicinal plants Verbena officinalis (L.), Erythrina mulungu (Mart. ex Benth.), Quassia amara (L.), Bidens pilosa (L.) and Plantago lanceolata (L.), for Meloidogyne incognita control in the greenhouse. Therefore tomato seedlings about 10 cm high, was transplanted in plastic pot with 1 liter capacity containing a mixture of soil: sand 2:1 (v / v) on each plant was inoculated with an aqueous suspension containing 3,000 of nematode eggs. After inoculation plants were applied to the soil separately 20ml of aqueous extracts of the respective plant species was study at a concentration of 100 g L-1. In the control treatment, was added to soil water only or chemical nematicide. The experiment was a completely randomized design with seven replicates per treatment, each represented by a pot containing tomato seedlings and repeated once. Variables evaluated were shoot height, fresh weight of shoot and root, number of galls and number of eggs. Of all botanical extracts evaluated, only the aqueous extracts V. officinalis and E.mulungu, controlled the nematode galls when compared to the control treatment (water only) and control exhibited the same to that obtained with the use of chemical nematicide. No aqueous extract affected the development of tomato plants. Further studies should be conducted under field conditions to test the efficiency of these extracts in field conditions.

Meloidogyne exigua is a parasitic nematode of plants that causes great losses to coffee farmers. In an effort to develop parasitic controls, 154 chalcones were synthesized and screened for activity against this nematode. The best results were obtained with (2E)-1-(4'-nitrophenyl)-3-(2,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)prop-2-en-1-one (6) with a 50% lethal concentration (LC50) of 171 µg/ml against M. exigua second-stage juveniles, in comparison to the commercially-available nematicide carbofuran which had an LC50 of 260 µg/ml under the same conditions. When coffee plants were used, 6 reduced the nematode population to ~50% of that observed in control plants. To investigate the mechanism of action of 6, an in silico study was carried out, which indicated that 6 may act against M. exigua through inhibition of a putative caffeic acid 3-O-methyltransferase homodimer, the amino acid sequence of which was determined by examining the genome of Meloidogyne incognita.

Se investigó el efecto del follaje del "huacatay" Tagetes minuta sobre la nodulación radicular producida por el nematodo Meloidogyne incognita que parasita el "pimiento páprika" Capsicum annuum cultivado en invernadero, con la finalidad de obtener una alternativa de control de este nematodo. Se utilizaron tres grupos experimentales y un testigo, con 12 macetas cada uno, las cuales contenían suelo y arena estériles (1:1). A este substrato se adicionó el follaje de T. minuta al 20, 35 y 50% (v/v) según grupo experimental, y el testigo no recibió esta enmienda. En cada maceta se sembró una plántula de C. annuum, y a la semana postsiembra se inoculó 5000 huevos de M. incognita. A las ocho semanas, se evaluaron los nódulos en sus raíces. Todas las plantas presentaron nódulos; aunque, en aquellas de los grupos experimentales el número de éstos fue menor que en las plantas testigo, con diferencia estadística significativa (p 0,05). Se concluye que el follaje de T. minuta adicionado como enmienda orgánica al 20, 35 y 50% al suelo de cultivo de plantas de C. annuum limita la nodulación radicular ocasionada por M. incognita. Lo cual sugiere su uso potencial en el control de este nematodo


The effect of the foliage of Tagetes minuta "huacatay" on Meloidogyne incognita root-galling on Capsicum annuum "paprika pepper" cultured in a greenhouse was researched, to obtain a control strategy for this nematode. Three experimental groups and one control with 12 pots each were used, which contained sterilized soil and sand (1:1). To this substrate was added cut foliage of T. minuta at 20, 35 and 50% (v/v) according to the experimental group, and the control group remained without this amendment. In each pot a seedling of C. annuum was sown, and one week post-seeding was inoculated with 5000 eggs of M. incognita. Eight weeks later the root galling was evaluated. All the plants had root galling; although the number of galls in plants of the experimental groups was less than those in the control group with statistical significant difference (p 0.05). It is concluded that the foliage of T. minuta added as organic amendment at 20, 35 and 50% to the culture soil for C. annuum plants limits the M. incognita root galling. That suggests its potential use in the control of this nematode
