Despite advances in neonatology, neonatal mortality from preventable causes remains high in the North and Northeast regions of Brazil. This study aimed to analyze the determinants associated with neonatal and postneonatal mortality in newborns admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit. A cohort study was carried out in a capital in the Brazilian Northeast from 2013 to 2018. The outcome studied was death. Poisson regression was performed in the multivariate analysis of variables. Four hundred and eighty newborns were eligible, and 8.1% (39 newborns) died. Among them, 34 died in the neonatal period. The determinants that remained significantly associated with neonatal and postneonatal mortality in the final adjustment model (p < 0.05) were history of abortion, perinatal asphyxia, early neonatal sepsis and umbilical venous catheterization. All causes of this outcome were preventable. The neonatal mortality rate, although it did not include twins, neonates with malformations incompatible with life and other conditions, was 3.47 deaths per thousand live births (95% CI:1.10-8.03‱), well below the national average. In this study, pregnant women from different social classes had in common a private plan for direct access to health services, which provided them with excellent care throughout pregnancy and postnatal care. These results indicate that reducing neonatal mortality is possible through public policies with strategies that promote improvements in access to health services.

Introduction Renal failure, comprising acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD), involves a decline or loss of kidney function. AKI is sudden and reversible, with a rapid decline in function over hours to days, while CKD involves persistent abnormalities lasting at least three months. Developing countries are seeing a rise in AKI cases, especially in critically ill patients. Globally, there's a growing occurrence and mortality rate linked to CKD. Methods The study used a retrospective cross-sectional design to analyze AKI and CKD mortality rates in Brazil from 2019 to 2022. Data on population and demographics, including sex and age, were obtained from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics. Mortality data for kidney diseases were sourced from the Brazilian Hospital Information System. The analysis utilized the Joinpoint Regression Program to calculate average annual percentage changes (AAPCs) and their respective 95% confidence intervals. Weighted Bayesian information criterion was used to determine the significance levels and identify the best-fitting combination of line segments and joinpoints. Results The study findings revealed a significant rise in AKI mortality rates for both males and females, from 2008 to 2021 (APC = 3.16; CI: 2.29 to 5.93), with higher mortality rates recorded among males compared to women over the entire study period. Analyses according to age groups showed that males between the ages 40 to 49 experienced the most rapid increase in mortality during the 2019 - 2021 period (APC = 35.41; CI: 16.72 to 46.57); meanwhile, the most rapid increase in mortality for females was observed from 2019 to 2021, and this was among those aged 30 to 39 (APC = 40.33; CI = 6.48 to 59.78). Furthermore, there was an observable upward trend in mortality related to CKD (APC = 0.70; CI: 0.41 to 1.01), with males consistently having higher mortality rates throughout the entire study period. The elderly population, both males and females, experienced the most rapid increase in CKD-related mortality, with AAPC values of 2.32 (CI: 1.82 to 2.89) for males and 1.62 (CI: 1.08 to 2.10) for females. Conclusion We observed a consistent increase in mortality rates from acute kidney diseases for both males and females since 2008, with males experiencing higher mortality rates overall. The study highlighted the need for further research to understand the underlying factors contributing to these trends. Additionally, interventions targeting modifiable risk factors and improving access to healthcare could help reduce mortality related to renal failure.

OBJECTIVES: Women's mortality at a reproductive age has been a global concern, and its decrease has been incorporated as a target of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The aim of this study was to describe the spatial-temporal evolution of mortality rates among women of reproductive age in Brazilian municipalities by groups of causes and socioeconomic indicators from 2000 to 2018. STUDY DESIGN: Ecological analysis. METHODS: This work was an ecological, descriptive study that analyzed estimates of mortality rates among women of reproductive age (15-49 years) by main groups of causes of death from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study in three consecutive trienniums, T1 (2000-2002), T2 (2009-2011), and T3 (2016-2018). To quantify the temporal evolution in mortality rates, the present study calculated the percentage change for each triennium. The spatial analysis of mortality rates was carried out using Moran's index. The Pearson coefficient was used to analyze the correlation between the data. RESULTS: A significant decline in mortality rates was found for all groups of causes in all regions of the country. Despite the downward trend, the percentage change from 2009 to 2011 to 2016 to 2018 showed a decrease in the group of Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs) and external causes. The decline in mortality rates of women due to external causes showed only a minimal change in the North and Northeast regions from T2 to T3, whereas a cluster of neighboring municipalities with high mortality rates persisted in the municipalities of the South region and in the state of Roraima. The ranking of the main causes of death in Brazilian municipalities showed an increase in neoplasms in detriment to cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). CONCLUSIONS: The main causes of death in women of reproductive age at a more local level could be used to recognize inequalities and to develop interventions aimed at tackling premature and preventable deaths.

BACKGROUND: Haemodialysis is the most frequently prescribed Renal Replacement Therapy modality worldwide. However, patients undergoing this therapy have an unpredictable evolution related to vascular access. OBJECTIVE: To determine the factors associated with the mortality and hospitalization rate in haemodialysis patients at a third-level care Centre in the Dominican Republic. METHODS: This was an observational and prospective study involving a cohort of 192 haemodialysis patients. The patient selection was non-probabilistic for convenience, and a direct source questionnaire was applied. RESULTS: Of the 192 patients in the cohort, 103 (53.6%) were hospitalized and evaluated. The most frequent cause of hospitalization was catheter-related bloodstream infections (53.4%). Almost one-third (28.2%) of the hospitalized patients died, mostly due to infections (12.6%). Of those who died 29 patients (90%) had a Central venous catheter (CVC) with a non-tunnelled catheter (NTCVC) (65.5%); having an NTC CVC makes a patient 85.5 times more likely to be hospitalized than patients with arteriovenous fistulas. CONCLUSION: Vascular access plays a predominant role in the hospitalization and mortality rates in haemodialysis. Patients with an arteriovenous fistula obtained significantly better outcomes than those with central venous catheters.

Introducción: La tasa de mortalidad infantil es un indicador importante y sensible del bienestar y la calidad de vida de una población, muy usado para medir su estado de salud. Objetivo: Caracterizar la mortalidad infantil según semestres en la provincia de Santiago de Cuba durante 2008-2022. Métodos: Se realizó un estudio observacional descriptico y transversal sobre la mortalidad infantil en la provincia de Santiago de Cuba durante los años 2008-2022. Para ello se analizó la relación existente entre los semestres de cada año respecto a los nacimientos, las defunciones y su incidencia en la tasa del país. Resultados: Se observó una disminución de los nacimientos y un incremento de las defunciones en cada quinquenio estudiado respecto al anterior. El número de fallecidos menores de un año fluctuó, con una tendencia al aumento a partir del 2019; asimismo, los indicadores de mortalidad infantil fueron inestables, con propensión al incremento, sobre todo en el segundo semestre, y peores resultados en el 2021 y 2022. Existió un descenso mantenido de los nacimientos a partir del 2011, que alcanzó 25,6 % en el 2022. Respecto a los semestres, en el segundo hubo mayor número de nacimientos, defunciones y tasas. Conclusiones: La provincia de Santiago de Cuba influye de forma directa en los resultados de la mortalidad infantil nacional, con una tasa superior a la exhibida por el país. El segundo semestre es el período en el que se incrementan los nacimientos y las defunciones, lo que incide en la elevación de las tasas respectivas.


Introduction: The infant mortality rate is an important and sensitive indicator of the well-being and life quality of a population, very used to measure the health state. Objective: To characterize the infant mortality in Santiago de Cuba province during the period 2008-2022. Methods: An observational descriptive and cross-sectional study about the infant mortality was carried out in Santiago de Cuba during the years 2008-2022. The existent relationship among the semesters of every year regarding births, deaths and their incidence in the country rate was analyzed. Results: A decrease of births and an increment of deaths were observed in each five year period studied regarding the previous one. The number of deceased children under one year fluctuated, with a tendency to the increase starting from 2019; also, the indicators of infant mortality were unstable, with tendency to the increment, mainly in the second semester, and worse results in 2021 and 2022. There was a maintained decrease of births since 2011 that reached 25.6% in 2022. In relation to semesters, in the second one there was a higher number of births, deaths and rates. Conclusions: Santiago de Cuba province influences in a direct way on the results of national infant mortality, with a superior rate to the one exhibited by the country. The second semester is the period in which births and deaths are increased, what impacts in the elevation of the respective rates.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a public health concern in Brazil, with deleterious effects on quality of life and increasing mortality rates. The prevalence of diabetes in Brazil is on the rise, and it is imperative to understand its effects on mortality rates in the last two decades in order to effectively mitigate the detrimental impact of diabetes on public health. This study aims to analyze mortality trends related to diabetes in Brazil from 2000 to 2021, encompassing both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, across sex and various age cohorts. Using joinpoint regression analysis, temporal trends in Brazil were assessed, while also incorporating findings from previous studies and considering potential influencing factors, such as government initiatives and cuts in healthcare investment. The study revealed a general upward trend in mortality rates associated with DM1 and DM2 over the study period, in both males and females, with men showing a higher AAPC (average annual percent change), which translated into significantly increased mortality difference at the end of the study. Additionally, it revealed elevated mortality values for extreme age groups in the age cohorts studied, with the exception of middle-aged cohort groups in DM2, which showed an expected higher APC (annual percent change), considering the age of highest incidence of DM2 in those age groups. This comprehensive analysis provides critical insights into the escalating impact of diabetes on mortality rates in Brazil and highlights the urgent need for healthcare strategies. It is expected that the increased prevalence of diabetes in the Brazilian population adds an additional economic burden to healthcare expenditure by the Brazilian government, further worsening the health disparities among different social groups. Unless several political decisions to reduce healthcare expenditure are reversed, greater difficulties in accessing treatments will be detrimental for vulnerable social groups in Brazil. By understanding the nuanced patterns of diabetes-related mortality, healthcare providers and policymakers can allocate resources effectively and implement tailored interventions to better address diabetes in Brazil.

Abstract Prostate cancer (PCa) is a highly prevalent condition among men worldwide, resulting in reduced quality of life and increased costs to health systems due to hospitalization and death. This study aimed to explore and understand the evolution of PCa in Brazil from 2008 to 2018. Data were obtained from the National Health System Department of Informatics (DATASUS) using code C61 for malignant prostatic neoplasms. We presented the hospitalization and mortality rates in a temporal-, regional- and age-dependent manner. From 2008 to 2018, a year-dependent increase in hospital admissions due to PCa was reported in Brazil, in which the Southeast region showed the highest prevalence. Men aged ≥80 and those 70-79 years old had similar hospitalization rates, followed by men aged 60-69, 50-59, 40-49 and 30-39 years old. Similarly, an increase in deaths due to PCa was reported during this period, with the highest rates seen in the Southeast. Men aged ≥80 years had higher mortality rates, followed by those aged 70-79, 60-69, 50-59, 40-49 and 30-39 years old. The results obtained indicate an age- and region-dependent increase in PCa morbidity and mortality in Brazil overtime and may contribute to the ongoing discussion on the role and future perspective of the health care system in Brazil

ABSTRACT Objetive: To provide a comprehensive analysis of mortality trends from acute pesticide poisoning in Mexico from 2000 through 2021. Methods: The governmental records of deaths from acute pesticide poisoning were used. The age-standardized years of life lost and aged-standardized mortality rates were estimated. Significant changes in trends of annual percentage change were identified using Joinpoint regression. Results: Between 2000 and 2021, mortality was primarily observed in individuals aged 15 to 19 years. Males were the most affected. Self-inflicted pesticide poisoning was the primary registered reason for death. The age-standardized mortality rate from acute pesticide poisoning was reduced from 2012 to 2021 (APC: -4.4; p=0.003). Conclusion: This report is the first study about the mortality rate from acute pesticide poisoning in Mexico. The results provided evidence to consider in developing laws to prevent acute pesticide poisoning.


RESUMO Objetivo: Fornecer uma análise abrangente das tendências de mortalidade por envenenamento agudo por pesticidas no México de 2000 a 2021. Métodos: Foram usados os registros governamentais de mortes por envenenamento agudo por pesticidas. Foram estimados os anos de vida perdidos estandardizados por idade e as taxas de mortalidade estandardizados por idade. Modificações significativas nas tendências de variação percentual anual foram identificadas usando a regressão Joinpoint. Resultados: Entre 2000 e 2021, a mortalidade foi observada principalmente em indivíduos na faixa etária de 15 a 19 anos. Os homens foram os mais afetados. O envenenamento por pesticida autoinfligido foi o principal motivo de morte registrado. A taxa de mortalidade estandardizada por idade por intoxicação aguda por pesticidas foi reduzida de 2012 a 2021 (Annual Percent Change — APC: -4,4; p=0,003). Conclusão: Este relatório é o primeiro estudo sobre a taxa de mortalidade por intoxicação aguda por pesticidas no México. Os resultados forneceram evidências a serem consideradas no desenvolvimento de leis para prevenir o envenenamento agudo por pesticidas.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: The risk of death due to tuberculosis (TB) in Brazil is high and strongly related to living conditions (LC). However, epidemiological studies investigating changes in LC and their impact on TB are lacking. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the impact of LC on TB mortality in Brazil. DESIGN AND SETTING: This ecological study, using panel data on spatial and temporal aggregates, was conducted in 1,614 municipalities between 2002 and 2015. METHODS: Data were collected from the Mortality Information System and the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics. The proxy variable used for LC was the Urban Health Index (UHI). Negative binomial regression models were used to estimate the effect of the UHI on TB mortality rate. Attributable risk (AR) was used as an impact measure. RESULTS: From 2002 to 2015, TB mortality rate decreased by 23.5%, and LC improved. The continuous model analysis resulted in an RR = 0.89 (95%CI = 0.82-0.96), so the AR was −12.3%. The categorized model showed an effect of 0.92 (95%CI = 0.83-0.95) in municipalities with intermediate LC and of 0.83 (95%CI = 0.82-0.91) in those with low LC, representing an AR for TB mortality of −8.7% and −20.5%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Improved LC impacted TB mortality, even when adjusted for other determinants. This impact was greater in the strata of low-LC municipalities.

Background Cerebrovascular disease is the second leading cause of death and the third leading cause of disability following heart disease. In 2019, there were over 101 million people living with a stroke and 12.2 million incidents of stroke globally. For the past three decades, stroke has remained the leading cause of death in Brazil, causing over 100,000 fatalities annually, along with numerous functional impairments among those who survive. The Brazilian healthcare system has witnessed notable advancements in the last decade, including the establishment of additional hospitals and a rise in the count of healthcare professionals specializing in cardiovascular and neurological surgery. However, there exists a gap in the research landscape for continuous comprehensive studies aimed at exploring the evolving mortality rates related to cerebrovascular diseases, of which the last one included data up to 2019. This study aimed to address this gap by meticulously analyzing the trends in cerebrovascular disease mortality in Brazil from 2000 to 2021, for the variables age, sex, state of residence, and geographic region. Methods This is a descriptive, ecological, and time series study. Nationwide data for annual cerebrovascular mortality from Brazil were used for the period 2000-2021. Age-adjusted mortality rates (AAMRs) by direct standardization, encompassing people above 20 years of age, were calculated and expressed per 100,000 persons. Mortality trends were assessed using joinpoint regression analysis by calculating the annual percentage change (APC) and its corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) across categories of age, sex, and state and region of residence. Results The mortality rates decreased for the sex categories over the analyzed years. The AAMR for the categories decreased as follows: males and females (95 deaths/100,000 to 52 deaths/100,000 inhabitants), males (108 deaths/100,000 to 63 deaths/100,000 inhabitants), and females (83 deaths/100,000 to 44 deaths/100,000 inhabitants). The most substantial reduction in AAMR for males occurred in the 30-39-year age group (APC: -4.10), while the smallest decline was observed in the 20-29-year age group (APC: -1.44). All five macro-regions demonstrated statistically significant and downward AAPC values in mortality rates. The south and midwest regions decreased at a stable rate, as denoted by the same APC and AAPC values (-4.05 and -3.11, respectively). The north and northeast regions exhibited an increase in AAMR, followed by a decrease (APC: 0.68 to -1.42 and 2.63 to -2.35, respectively). Conclusions Our comprehensive analysis revealed a downward trend in cerebrovascular disease mortality rates across diverse demographic groups and macro-regions. Females experienced a more substantial reduction compared to males. Despite higher mortality rates among individuals aged 50 and above, all age groups displayed a marked decrease. The continuous decline can be attributed to policy interventions aimed at enhancing healthcare delivery, increased awareness, and healthier diets and lifestyles. With regard to the macro-regions, the regions in the southern zone demonstrated a more significant decrease as compared to the northern part. In Brazil, a more significant decline in cerebrovascular disease mortality rates could be achieved through increased focus on prevention measures and efforts toward mitigating disparities and inequalities between macro-regions.

The study aimed to analyze the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on mortality rates in patients with systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases (SARD) in Mexico. We selected SARD-related deaths using National Open Data and Information from the Ministry of Health, Mexico, and ICD-10 codes. We assessed the observed compared to the predicted mortality values for 2020 and 2021, employing trends from 2010 to 2019 with joinpoint and prediction modelling analyses. Among 12,742 deaths due to SARD between 2010 and 2021, the age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) increased significantly between 2010 and 2019 (pre-pandemic) (annual percentage change [APC] 1.1%; 95% CI 0.2-2.1), followed by a non-significant decrease during the pandemic period (APC 13.9%; 95% CI 13.9-5.3). In addition, the observed ASMR of 1.19 for 2020 for SARD and of 1.14 for 2021 were lower than the predicted values of 1.25 (95% CI 1.22-1.28) for 2020 and 1.25 (95% CI 1.20-1.30) for 2021. Similar findings were identified for specific SARD, mainly systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), or by sex or age group. Interestingly, the observed mortality rates for SLE in the Southern region of 1.00 in 2020 and 1.01 in 2021 were both significantly greater than the predicted values of 0.71 (95% CI 0.65-0.77) in 2020 and 0.71 (95% CI 0.63-0.79). In Mexico, the observed SARD mortality rates were not higher than the expected values during the pandemic, except for SLE in the Southern region. No differences by sex or age group were identified.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of mortality worldwide and in Colombia. The analysis of CVD mortality has been mainly relied on individual factors and rates, but occurrence is also related to contextual conditions. Understanding the distribution of CVD in a region will contribute to implement more focused-preventive and care interventions. METHODS: Using the national mortality register established by the Department of National Statistics, standardized rates and spatial distribution of CVD mortality were estimated for Cali, Colombia, between 2010-2017. Global and local spatial aggregation was assessed using the Geary's C test and for each district standardized mortality ratios smoothed by the Bayesian empirical were estimated. RESULTS: Over the period, CVD was the main cause of mortality with 28,804 deaths accounting for 23,8% of total deaths. The global CVD mortality rate varied from 235.9 to 257.4 per 100.000 habitants, with an average increase of 9.1% in the percentage change. The main cause of mortality were hypertensive diseases following by ischemic heart diseases and stroke. The standardized mortality ratios smoothed by the Bayesian empirical method showed that the districts 7, 13, 14, 15 and 16 located at the eastern area with the lowest socio-economic strata and the district 22 at the south of the city with the highest socio-economic strata had the high risks of CVD mortality. All these areas were at the boundary of the city. The the lowest risk was observed in districts 1 and 2 at the northwest area with the upper socio-economic strata. Over the study period, a spatial autocorrelation was found in the districts 1,9 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 19, and 21 by using the Geary's C test. The highest significant spatial association was found in the districts 1 and 21. CONCLUSION: Of 22 districts in Cali, the highest risk of CVD mortality was found in three at the lowest and one in the upper socio-economic strata between 2013 and 2017. Over the period a global spatial aggregation was identified due mainly to districts peripherical located suggesting that there could be contextual conditions influencing the risk. Therefore, there is a need for considering local conditions to prevent CVD mortality.

Introdução: A sífilis congênita mantém-se como problema de saúde no Brasil, especialmente na cidade do Rio de Janeiro, com números para esse agravo acima da média do país. Essa doença é um marcador para a avaliação da qualidade da assistência à saúde materno-infantil, por poder ser evitada a partir de medidas como diagnóstico precoce e tratamento da gestante. Objetivos: Este estudo transversal descreveu o perfil epidemiológico dos casos de sífilis congênita (SC) no município do Rio de Janeiro, nos anos de 2016 a 2020, no que se refere a dados sociodemográficos maternos, do pré-natal e da evolução do quadro, assim como as taxas de incidência totais e segundo esses fatores. Adicionalmente, foram calculadas as taxas de mortalidade fetal e infantil. Também se avaliou o grau de completude das variáveis da ficha de SC. Métodos: Foram incluídos todos os casos notificados de sífilis congênita na cidade durante o período estudado, a partir dos registros do Sistema de Informações de Agravos de Notificação (SINAN). Foram utilizados o Sistema de Informações sobre Nascidos Vivos (SINASC) e o Sistema de Informações sobre Mortalidade (SIM) como base de dados para os cálculos das taxas de incidência e de mortalidade. Resultados: Entre 2016 e 2020, a cidade do Rio de Janeiro apresentou elevadas taxas de sífilis congênita, chegando a uma incidência de 18,6/1000 nascidos vivos em 2020, com mais de 90% de casos de SC recente. A maioria ocorreu em mulheres em situação de vulnerabilidade social ­ pretas, adolescentes, com baixa escolaridade e sem acesso à assistência pré-natal. Destaca-se ainda o baixo grau de completude de algumas variáveis e a divergência encontrada entre os dados de mortalidade do SIM e do SINAN, ambos fatores que prejudicam o adequado conhecimento do agravo. Conclusão: Conclui-se que, apesar dos avanços, muito ainda precisa ser realizado para o controle da sífilis congênita no município do Rio de Janeiro (AU).


Introduction: Congenital syphilis remains an important national health issue, especially in Rio de Janeiro, which presents numbers above the country's rate for this offense. This disease is a marker for the assessment of the quality of care delivered to mothers and children since it can be avoided through early diagnosis and treatment during pregnancy. Objective: This cross-sectional study described the epidemiological profile of congenital syphilis cases in the city of Rio de Janeiro, in 2016-2020, according to maternal sociodemographic data, prenatal care, and cases' evolution. Furthermore, incidence rates for these factors and the fetal and infant mortality rates were calculated. The completeness of the records was also assessed. Methods: We included all notified cases of congenital syphilis in the city during 2016-2020 using SINAN records. SINASC and SIM were also used as databases for the incidence rates and the mortality rates calculation. Results: During this period, the city of Rio de Janeiro exhibited high rates of this disease, with 18,6 cases/1000 live births in 2020 and more than 90% cases of early congenital syphilis. The highest rates were related to social vulnerability ­ black and teenage women with low levels of education and no access to prenatal care. It is important to highlight the low level of completeness for some variables and the divergence found between the mortality data from SIM and SINAN, both factors that jeopardize adequate knowledge of the disease. Conclusion: Therefore, despite some advances, a lot must be done to achieve control of congenital syphilis in the city of Rio de Janeiro (AU).

BACKGROUND: Ending preventable deaths of newborns and children under five by 2030 is among the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. This study aimed to describe infant mortality rate due to preventable causes in Rio Grande do Sul (RS), the Southernmost state in Brazil. With 11,329,605 inhabitants and 141,568 live births in 2017, RS was the fifth most populous state in the country. METHOD: An ecological and cross-sectional statewide study, with data extracted from records of the Mortality Information System, Death Certificates, and Live Birth Certificates for the year 2017. Preventability was estimated by applying the List of Causes of Deaths Preventable through Intervention of SUS (acronym for Sistema Unico de Saude - Brazilian Unified Health System) Intervention. Rates of preventable infant mortality (PIMR), preventable early neonatal mortality (PENMR), preventable late neonatal mortality (PLNMR), and preventable post-neonatal mortality (PPNMR) per 1000 live births (LB) were quantified. Incidence ratios, according to contextual characteristics (human development index of the health region and of the municipality; Gini index of the municipality), maternal characteristics at the time of delivery (age, education, self-reported skin color, presence of a partner, number of antenatal care consultations, and type of delivery), and characteristics of the child at the time of birth (gestational age, weight, and pregnancy type) were calculated. RESULTS: In 2017, there were 141,568 live births and 1425 deaths of infants younger than 1 year old, of which 1119 were preventable (PIMR = 7.9:1000 LB). The PENMR, PLNMR, and PPNMR were 4.1:1000 LB; 1.5:1000 LB; and 2.3:1000 LB, respectively. More than 60% of deaths in the first week and 57.5% in the late neonatal period could be reduced through adequate care of the woman during pregnancy. The most frequent preventable neonatal causes were related to prematurity, mainly acute respiratory syndrome, and non-specified bacterial septicemia. In the post-neonatal period, 31.8% of deaths could be prevented through adequate diagnostic and treatment. CONCLUSIONS: The strategies needed to reduce preventable infant deaths should preferably focus on preventing prematurity, through adequate care of the woman during pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: To identify priority areas for schistosomiasis control, we analysed the epidemiological characteristics, temporal trends and spatial patterns of schistosomiasis-related mortality in the state of Minas Gerais from 2000 to 2019. METHODS: Ecological and time-series study with spatial analysis techniques on deaths from Schistosomiasis mansoni. A log-linear regression model was used to identify changes in mortality rates. Moran's global index, local indicators of spatial association and a retrospective spatio-temporal permutation model were applied to identify the spatial and temporal distribution of mortality rates and assist in identifying priority areas for interventions. RESULTS: A total of 1290 deaths from schistosomiasis were recorded between 2000 and 2019, with an average mortality rate of 0.33 deaths/100,000. Although the overall mortality rate in the state of Minas Gerais decreased significantly over time (average annual percentage change = -9.6; 95% confidence interval = -14.4 to -4.6; p < 0.001), it increased in the mesoregions of Jequitinhonha, Mucuri Valley, and Rio Doce Valley. Spatial analysis identified the displacement and emergence of high-risk clusters from the central region of the state to the mesoregion of Rio Doce Valley. CONCLUSION: Temporal changes and shifting of high-risk areas from the central region to the mesoregion of Rio Doce Valley may indicate possible failures in early diagnosis and treatment of the schistosomiasis control program in these areas. Our research contributes to a better understanding of the spatio-temporal dynamics of death rates due to schistosomiasis infections and might help health authorities to direct resources most efficiently to avoid serious clinical outcomes in Minas Gerais.

This study aims at providing an overview of the socioeconomic consequences that debris-flow events have caused in Brazil, positioning the country in the international scenario and identifying areas where targeted actions are necessary. The analysis is conducted by calculating the debris-flow mortality rate (MR) and by using the so-called F-N plots (frequency of events that have caused N or more fatalities vs. the number of fatalities), based on a compilation of debris-flow-related disasters from 1920 to 2021. In total, 45 debris-flow events were documented in the considered period, responsible for 5771 fatalities and more than 5.5 billion USD in economic losses. The Serra do Mar Mountain Range is the main site of reported debris-flow occurrences (64.5%), followed by Serra da Mantiqueira (13.3%), and Serra Geral (13.3%). Southeast Brazil (SEB) is the region most affected by debris-flow events, due to the highest population density and the development of several cities in hilly areas, such as Petrópolis (Rio de Janeiro state) and Cubatão (São Paulo state). The debris-flow MR of SEB is higher than any other region in Brazil, pushing the national debris-flow MR upwards, and the F-N curve of SEB consolidates the region as the one with the highest risk to the phenomenon, indicating a higher probability of fatal events. The F-N plots further show that debris-flow events in Brazil represent a higher societal risk than in countries such as China, Japan and Italy. While there are differences in country size and the scale effect should be considered, these results highlight the urgent need for investments in disaster prevention and preparedness programs. BACKGROUND: Recognizing the causes of stillbirths and their associated conditions is essential to reduce its occurrence. OBJECTIVE: To describe information on stillbirths in Brazil during the past decade. SEARCH STRATEGY: A literature search was performed from January 2010 to December 2020. SELECTION CRITERIA: Original observational studies and clinical trials. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Data were manually extracted to a spreadsheet and descriptive analysis was performed. RESULTS: A total of 55 studies were included; 40 studies (72.2%) used the official data stored by national public health systems. Most articles aimed to estimate the rate and trends of stillbirth (60%) or their causes (55.4%). Among the 16 articles addressing the causes of death, 10 (62.5%) used the International Classification of Diseases; most of the articles only specified the main cause of death. Intrauterine hypoxia was the main cause reported (ranging from 14.3% to 54.9%). CONCLUSION: Having a national system based on compulsory notification of stillbirths may not be sufficient to provide quality information on occurrence and, especially, causes of death. Further improvements of the attribution and registration of causes of deaths and the implementation of educational actions for improving reporting systems are advisable. Finally, expanding the investigation of contributing factors associated with stillbirths would create an opportunity for further development of prevention strategies in low- and middle-income countries such as Brazil.

In this study, we evaluated some of the factors that affect mortality rate during transport from broiler poultry houses to slaughterhouses by conducting panel data analysis. We analyzed the data obtained from 26,599 broiler farms transported to the slaughterhouse from contracted broiler farms in 11 provinces in Turkey. Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) and Phillips-Perron (PP) tests were performed to evaluate whether the series forming the dataset were stationary. To analyze individual effects, parameters were estimated using fixed and random effects models. To decide which of the two models was valid, the Hausman test and fixed effects panel data analysis were performed. The fixed effects model explained 90.93% of the changes in the mortality rate through the independent variables. In the non-periodical fixed-effect panel data analysis, the mortality rate shows a significant (p<0.01) effect between the number of animals alive, number of animals dead, mean and total live weight at poultry farm exit, mean live weight at slaughterhouse arrival, and different variables. Our results showed that the estimation equations developed using model parameters to determine the mortality rate during transportation from different provinces could contribute to effective production planning.(AU)

COVID-19 is reported as an extremely contagious disease with common symptoms of fever, dry cough, sore throat, and tiredness. The published literature on incidence and gender-wise prevalence of COVID-19 is scarce in Pakistan. Therefore, the present study was designed to compare the distribution, incubation period and mortality rate of COVID-19 among the male and female population of district Attock. The data were collected between 01 April 2020 and 07 December 2020 from the population of district Attock, Pakistan. A total of 22,962 individuals were screened and 843 were found positive for RT-qPCR for SARS-CoV-2. The confirmed positive cases were monitored carefully. Among the positive cases, the incidence of COVID-19 was 61.7% among males and 38.2% among females. The average recovery period of males was 18.89±7.75 days and females were 19±8.40 days from SARS-CoV-2. The overall mortality rate was 8.06%. The death rate of male patients was significantly higher (P<0.05) compared to female patients. Also, the mortality rate was higher (P<0.05) in male patients of 40-60 years of age compared to female patients of the same age group. Moreover, the mortality rate significantly increased (P<0.05) with the increase of age irrespective of gender. In conclusion, the incidence and mortality rate of COVID-19 is higher in males compared to the female population. Moreover, irrespective of gender the mortality rate was significantly lower among patients aged <40 years.(AU)
