RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Documentation of lingual tumors is scarce in nonhuman primates. METHODS: Through a multi-institutional retrospective study we compile cases of primary and metastatic neoplasia in non-human primates. RESULTS: We describe five cases of lingual neoplasia. Three cases are primary lingual tumors: chondro-osteoblastic lipoma in a howler monkey, squamous cell carcinoma, and fibroma in two baboons. We describe two cases of metastatic lymphoma in the tongue in rhesus macaques. A literature review of published lingual neoplasia in nonhuman primates is included in this manuscript. CONCLUSION: Lingual neoplasia is seldom reported in non-human primates.

RESUMO

Osteolipoma is a rare benign variant of lipoma and constitutes less than 1% of all lipomas, presenting as a well-circumscribed painless mass. It is a tumor known to occur in several regions, usually intraosseous or adjacent to bone tissue, whose pathogenesis is still unclear. Imaging exams are useful in their evaluation and, mainly, in surgical planning, which consists of tumor excision. However, the definitive diagnosis of osteolipoma is made by histopathological examination. Although benign, osteolipomas can compress surrounding structures, leading to important symptomatology, as in this case reported in which it is in contact with the brachial plexus.

Madelung's disease is characterized by the symmetric and diffuse accumulation of adipose tissue with slow and progressive tumor growth. In this case report, a patient with this syndrome was treated at Hospital das Clínicas, in Recife, PE, to reduce the lipomatous content through a lipectomy. The patient presented large masses of elastic adipose tissue around the neck and supraclavicular region and the therapeutic proposal consisted of a two-stage surgery, with liposuction and anterior cervical lipectomy, followed by liposuction and posterior cervical lipectomy. Before surgery, a cardiological opinion was requested, which indicated an intermediate risk but did not contraindicate the procedure. Four days after surgery, the patient presented bruises and peripheral edema in the cervical surgical wound but was asymptomatic. Lipectomy and liposuction techniques are considered the most effective treatment methods for Madelung disease. However, the choice of surgery should be based on a comprehensive assessment of the severity of the disease, location of the mass, and patient expectations, as both techniques have advantages and disadvantages.

RESUMO

Cord lipomas are frequent findings in laparoscopic inguinal hernia surgeries in male patients. The symptoms of lipoma and the potential benefits of removing them are often overlooked because the focus is on the primary pathology of the hernia itself. Current recommendations are to reduce this fatty content, when present. When inguinal cord lipomas are left untreated in inguinal hernia surgery they can potentially cause symptoms and be detected in follow-up imaging exams. The objective of this study was to study incidence of cord lipomas in a cohort operated on by a single group specializing in abdominal wall surgery, as well as to analyze the possible relationship of this finding with the patient's symptoms, the characteristics of the operated hernia and postoperative outcome. This is a prospective study of male patients operated on for inguinal hernia laparoscopically or robotically in a single reference center. Of the total of 141 hernias, the distribution according to European Hernia Society classification showed that 45.4% were lateral, 19.1% medial and 35.5% mixed, highlighting a variety in the presentation of hernias. Analysis of the size of the hernias revealed that the majority (35.5%) were ≤ 1.5 cm. Inguinal cord lipoma was present in 64.5% of the samples, with no statistically significant association between the presence of the lipoma and an indirect hernia sac or obesity. The incidence of surgical site occurrences (SSO) was 9,2%, with seroma and hematoma. No recurrences were observed during follow-up, indicating a successful approach. There were no statistically significant relationships between SSO, the presence of lipoma and indirect hernial sac.

Introduction: lipomas are the most common benign neoplasms of mesenchymal origin, which can affect different parts of the body, with the maxillofacial region, in fact, one of the least frequent. Clinically, they manifest as slow-growing, circumscribed swellings, with a sessile or pedunculated base, smooth surface, soft consistency and yellowish color. The most affected intraoral sites are the buccal mucosa and the buccal vestibule. Among its most common microscopic variants are the fibrolipoma, composed of a fibrous component. However, such variations do not affect the prognosis of its treatment, which must be carried out through conservative excision of the lesion. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to report an atypical case of intraoral lipoma. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 67-yearold female patient presented with swelling in the bottom region of the mandibular vestibule with an evolution of approximately 10 months, painless, with complaints of difficulty in positioning the lower dental prosthesis. The initial diagnosis was lipoma, confirmed by anatomopathological analysis through excisional biopsy of the specimen. Final considerations: The treatment of intraoral lipomas recommended by the literature is local excision, obtained through excisional biopsy, being an effective solution with low morbidity for the patient(AU)

RESUMO

The finding of a lipoma in the middle ear is much rarer than its occurrence in the external auditory canal or even the inner ear, with fewer than seven cases described in the literature and none of them in Spain or South America. Despite its benign nature, the location of the lipoma may compromise structures that play a significant role in auditory preservation or balance control, necessitating surgical removal as a curative treatment. The main objective of this article is to describe the presentation of lipomas in the middle ear as a possible, although rare, etiology to consider in patients presenting with hearing loss, instability, or both symptoms concurrently, seeking otorhinolaryngological evaluation.

Abstract Lipomatous lineage tumors are common lesions in soft tissues, primarily in subcutaneous tissue and occasionally in deeper areas. Lipomas, benign tumors, are the most common and represent 50% of all soft tissue tumors. They consist of mature adipose tissue and exhibit typical imaging characteristics on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, when these mesenchymal tumors present dedifferentiated elements and their appearance does not show typical findings of either a lipoma or a liposarcoma, they are considered within the group of "atypical" lipomatous tumors, neoplasms that often have a relatively benign course when occurring in the extremities compared to their retroperitoneal counterparts. These types of tumors do not usually metastasize; however, they have high rates of local recurrence and a potential for late dedifferentiation into higher-grade sarcomas with metastatic potential. On the other hand, liposarcomas, less common, are distinguished by their location in deeper planes and have a different appearance on MRI, with masses showing fatty intensity, irregular septa, and non-adipose areas. We will highlight, through literature review, the utility of MRI in the identification and differentiation of lipomatous lineage lesions.

RESUMO

We report the case of a giant lipoma of the quadrigeminal cistern in a 30-year-old female patient with headache, nausea, vomiting, and phono and photophobia. Despite the large size of the tumor, conservative treatment was chosen. Intracranial lipomas are rare benign tumors commonly associated with congenital anomalies, and their origin is related to an incorrect embryonic development. The diagnosis is made mainly by cranial computed tomographyand magnetic resonance imaging. The treatment of lipoma can be surgical or conservative, and there is no single treatment for the different patients' cases.

Abstract Lipomas are the most common soft-tissue tumors in the human body, but their location in the hand is rare. Symptomatic hand lipomas, due to nerve compression, are even rarer. We present a case of median nerve neuropathy as a result of a giant palm lipoma, located on the thenar and hypothenar areas of the hand. The patient had typical symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, along with compromised thumb motion. Intraoperatively, the recurrent motor branch of the median nerve was sitting on the lipoma under a great tension. This particular location of the motor branch of the median nerve in relation to the lipoma makes this case unique. The tumor was excised protecting the neurovascular structures, and a few weeks later the patient regained full thumb motion, grip strength, and resolution of dysesthesia.

Aim:To describe a case of a patient with intramuscular oral lipoma and to compile the main aspects of this rare lesion. Case report:A 78-year-old caucasian woman complained of a swelling on her tongue. The increase in volume showed an evolution of about 5 years. Physical examination revealed a nodular lesion on the right lateral border of the tongue with a diameter of approximately 2.5 cm, soft to the touch, smoothsurface with no evidence of trauma, color similar to that of the lingual mucosa and with clear limits. An excisional biopsy was performed and the histopathological examination revealed mature adipose tissue, with muscle fibers trapped inside and around the lesion, absence of cytological atypia and mitosis, establishing the definitive diagnosis of intramuscular lipoma. There was no recurrence over a period of 4 years. Discussion:Lipoma is a benign neoplasm composed of mature adipocytes, uncommon in the oral cavity. Its intramuscular pattern is a rare form of lipoma with infiltrative behavior and a higher recurrence rate than the common lipoma. Its etiopathogenesis is not fully understood and its standard treatment is surgical excision. This lesion makes a differential diagnosis with other important pathologies, including liposarcoma. There are few documented cases of intramuscular lipomas on the tongue. Conclusion:Intramuscular oral lipoma is rare and dentists need to pay attention to its differential diagnosis with liposarcoma and its greater potential for recurrence in relation to common lipoma.

RESUMO

Colonic lipomas are benign tumors originating in mesenchymal tissue and are considered the second most common benign tumor in the colon after adenomatous polyps. They tend to affect women more; their most frequent location is the right colon. Generally, these lipomas do not exhibit symptoms, but when they reach a considerable size, they can cause manifestations. They can also result in complications such as obstruction, intussusception, and perforation. Since their radiological characteristics are similar to fat, they can be visualized using computed tomography. Still, the final diagnosis is made through colonoscopy, where a fatty mass with an oval shape and elastic capacity is observed. Lesions can be removed endoscopically or surgically. Spontaneous expulsion of a lipoma rectally is rare, and its mechanism is not yet fully understood. Although the literature establishes a cut-off point of 2 cm to decide between endoscopic or laparoscopic resection, the former is increasing and can extend this limit. Surgical resection is recommended in cases such as the one in this article. This case is the biggest reported colonic lipoma (13 cm) expelled spontaneously.

Abstract Intussusception in adults is an extremely rare surgical clinical entity, its main etiology in this population is generally attributed to malignant origin, benign pathology is less frequent and presents a challenge for pre-surgical diagnosis, since its presentation is non-specific and variable. Below is a clinical case that debuted with a clinical picture of intermittent pain in the right upper quadrant, manifesting exacerbation and non-specific laboratory tests, for which initially pathology of biliary origin was thought to be the reason for the pain, and therefore, an ultrasound of the liver and bile ducts was performed, observing signs suggestive of intussusception secondary to a lipoma, for which a simple abdominal tomography was performed to corroborate the diagnosis.

RESUMO

Hibernomas are uncommon and benign tumors made up of brown fat cells. These tumors are typically found in the thigh, axillae, shoulder, back, neck, thorax, arm, and retroperitoneum. There are 4 histological variants of hibernomas, including the typical pattern, myxoid, lipoma-like, and spindle cell variant. The lipoma-like variant is characterized by numerous univacuolated adipocytic cells with intermingled multivacuolated granular cells. It is worth noting that lipoma-like hibernoma in the breast is infrequent. In this case, we present a 72-year-old woman with a history of moderately differentiated cholangiocarcinoma, obesity, and no family history of breast cancer. She consulted for a mass sensation in her right breast that had been present for a year. The mass was not painful and showed no inflammation or nipple discharge. Upon physical examination, a palpable 14 cm mass was identified, occupying the 2 internal quadrants and causing deformation of the surface of the right breast. Imaging studies indicated a solid mass in the lower-inner quadrant of the right breast, which was oval-shaped, well-defined, and displayed internal vascularization. Initially, a diagnosis of low-grade liposarcoma was considered, leading to a core needle biopsy guided by ultrasound. However, the histopathology study revealed a lipoma-like hibernoma, an exceedingly rare benign lesion. Lipoma-like hibernoma can present as a palpable mass or may be incidentally discovered. It should be considered in the differential diagnosis of any lesion containing fatty content. Imaging methods may suggest its presence, but histopathology confirms the diagnosis and its accuracy prevents needless overtreatment.

RESUMO

Although lipomas are the most common mesenchymal tumors, the intramuscular type is rare. We report the case of a patient with rotator cuff arthropathy with a lipoma in the teres minor. Wide surgical excision and total shoulder arthroplasty with reverse prosthesis was performed and 18 months of follow up showed excellent results with any recurrence. The teres minor is extremely important for the proper function of a reverse prosthesis, and lipoma growth in the muscular belly can compromise the functionality of the prosthesis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of a rotator cuff arthropathy with a lipoma in the teres minor.

RESUMO

We present the case of a 56-year-old male patient with a history of atrial flutter for six months; he was admitted to the hospital for presenting a mass of 8 cm in maximum diameter in the right atrium, which prolapsed through the tricuspid valve into the right ventricle. Emergency surgery was scheduled, performing exeresis of the tumor and tricuspid annuloplasty. The Pathological anatomy determined that the removed mass corresponded to a cardiac lipoma.

RESUMO

Lipomas can occur anywhere in the body where fat cells are present; however, intraosseous lipomas are rare. Although solitary lesions have already been reported in the gnathic bones, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of bilateral intraosseous lipoma. A 62-year-old woman was referred for evaluation of a swelling on both maxillary tuberosities. The radiographic examination showed a mixed radiolucent-radiopaque image with ill-defined borders on the right side of the maxilla, and an ill-defined radiolucency on the left side. Histologically, both sides revealed numerous mature adipocytes surrounded by immature bone and dystrophic calcification. The patient remains under follow-up and free of disease for 8 months. Due to the rarity of the intraosseous lipomas in the jaws, a literature review of the published cases was performed jointly with this unique case report.
