RESUMO

Uncertainties and discrepant results in identifying crucial areas for emotional facial expression recognition may stem from the eye tracking data analysis methods used. Many studies employ parameters of analysis that predominantly prioritize the examination of the foveal vision angle, ignoring the potential influences of simultaneous parafoveal and peripheral information. To explore the possible underlying causes of these discrepancies, we investigated the role of the visual field aperture in emotional facial expression recognition with 163 volunteers randomly assigned to three groups: no visual restriction (NVR), parafoveal and foveal vision (PFFV), and foveal vision (FV). Employing eye tracking and gaze contingency, we collected visual inspection and judgment data over 30 frontal face images, equally distributed among five emotions. Raw eye tracking data underwent Eye Movements Metrics and Visualizations (EyeMMV) processing. Accordingly, the visual inspection time, number of fixations, and fixation duration increased with the visual field restriction. Nevertheless, the accuracy showed significant differences among the NVR/FV and PFFV/FV groups, despite there being no difference in NVR/PFFV. The findings underscore the impact of specific visual field areas on facial expression recognition, highlighting the importance of parafoveal vision. The results suggest that eye tracking data analysis methods should incorporate projection angles extending to at least the parafoveal level.

RESUMO

The African planthopper Leptodelphax maculigera (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) has been recently reported in many places in Brazil in association with maize. Its occurrence in maize production fields in Brazil has brought concerns to the corn production chain regarding the possibility of this planthopper to be a vector for maize bushy stunt phytoplasma (MBSP), corn stunt spiroplasma (Spiroplasma kunkelii), maize rayado fino virus (MRFV), and maize striate mosaic virus (MSMV). The phytoplasma and spiroplasma, which are bacteria belonging to the class Mollicutes, and the two viruses are associated with the corn stunt disease complex. Given the presence of the African planthopper species and the corn stunt complex in Brazil, we further investigated the abundance of this planthopper species in the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil, and whether the planthopper can carry the four pathogens. We inspected 12 maize production fields in different municipalities in the state for 20 weeks, using two yellow sticky traps for each maize field. The sticky traps were replaced weekly. A total of 130 specimens of L. maculigera were captured, with a great discrepancy in quantity among locations and weeks. We detected the mollicute MBSP and the viruses MRFV and MSMV in L. maculigera, whereas S. kunkelii was absent in the assessed African planthopper samples. The molecular detection of the phytoplasma and the viruses in field-collected African planthoppers is strong evidence that this insect species has the ability to acquire those pathogens through feeding from the phloem of diseased maize plants. Nonetheless, transmission capacity needs to be experimentally proven to assert L. maculigera as a vector for the corn-stunting pathogens.

RESUMO

Vaginoscopy allows an intravaginal endoscopic evaluation and can help in the diagnosis of female bovine genital tract disorders. The aim of this study is to validate a new method of gynaecological examination using a Scope VOR&GDI videovaginoscope. Twenty-six heifers were used, divided into 2 groups with 13 animals, control group (GC) and videovaginoscopic group (GV). In the CG, vaginoscopy was performed with a vaginal speculum and in the GV with a Scope VOR&GDI videovaginoscope. All heifers underwent vaginoscopy on day 0 (D0), and 9 days later, on day 9 (D9). Vaginoscopy provided adequate intravaginal inspection. In the CG, 23% (3/13) of the heifers showed discomfort during the test. In GV, vaginal inspection was better due to better image quality. The videovaginoscope is the most effective equipment for carrying out the vaginoscopy procedure in Nellore heifers, as it produces sharper and clearer images and can help in the diagnostic and therapeutic routine of veterinarians.

RESUMO

Surveillance of bovine tuberculosis (bTB) lesions in animals at slaughterhouses is useful for controlling and eradicating the disease, besides providing epidemiological information. This study aimed to identify risk factors for bovine tuberculosis (bTB) condemnation in cattle at slaughterhouses in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. A logistic regression analysis was conducted using data on bTB-related condemnations. Variables examined included animal origin, number of slaughtered animals, season, inspection level (state or municipality), animal sex, and slaughterhouse location. A total of 297,817 Animal Transport Guides were evaluated, representing the transportation of 3497,521 animals. Among these, 6097 (2.05%) had at least one animal condemned due to bTB lesions. Risk factors for condemnation included larger batch sizes, female animals, slaughterhouses, and animal origin. The higher condemnation frequency in females and regions with dairy farms suggests links to milk production. Variation in condemnation rates by inspection level and slaughterhouse highlights the need for standardized procedures in identifying bTB lesions. Identifying these risk factors enables targeted interventions to enhance disease control and eradication efforts.

RESUMO

Bovine cysticercosis is a foodborne zoonosis that has a worldwide distribution, and its highest prevalence is found in developing countries with a large volume of cattle production, such as Brazil. The objective was to evaluate the prevalence of cysticercosis during seven years in three slaughterhouses located in the western region of Minas Gerais state, Brazil, and the impacts of the legislation on the identification and destination of infected carcasses. Three slaughterhouses (Sl) were selected for this study with averages of 200 (SlA), 721 (SlB) and 1138 (SlC) bovines slaughtered per day. The monthly number of slaughtered cattle, infected carcasses with cysticercosis and destination were used to calculate the condemnation occurrence index (COI) and the adjusted seasonal index (ASI). To assess the impact of the legislation, the prevalence rate and destination of infected carcasses were subdivided into the PRE (January 2013 to March 2017) and POST (April 2017 to December 2020) period of Decree 9013 of 2017 and the results were compared by chi-square (P < 0.05). SlA recorded the highest cysticercosis rate with 1.54 % and SlC the lowest rate with 0.33 %. In addition, it was observed that in the POST period there was an increase in the identification of infected carcasses in SlA and B (P < 0.05). The POST period also resulted in a change in the relative frequency of infected carcasses destination in the three slaughterhouses (P < 0.05). The ASI identified an increase in infected carcasses in February and a decrease in November for SlB, proving to be an important tool for planning the inspection team trainings. These results show that the disease is still present in the studied region and highlight the benefits of using the One Health concept in the evaluation of a time series prevalence of bovine cysticercosis by: identifying seasonality of the disease, trends during the time period and impacts brought by updates in the national sanitary legislation.

RESUMO

The inspection and maintenance of transmission systems are necessary for their proper functioning. In this way, among the line's critical points are the insulator chains, which are responsible for providing insulation between conductors and structures. The accumulation of pollutants on the insulator surface can cause failures in the power system, leading to power supply interruptions. Currently, the cleaning of insulator chains is performed manually by operators who climb towers and use cloths, high-pressure washers, or even helicopters. The use of robots and drones is also under study, presenting challenges to be overcome. This paper presents the development of a drone-robot for cleaning insulator chains. The drone-robot was designed to identify insulators by camera and perform cleaning through a robotic module. This module is attached to the drone and carries a battery-powered portable washer, a reservoir for demineralized water, a depth camera, and an electronic control system. This paper includes a literature review on the state of the art related to strategies used for cleaning insulator chains. Based on this review, the justification for the construction of the proposed system is presented. The methodology used in the development of the drone-robot is then described. The system was validated in a controlled environment and in field experimental tests, with the ensuing discussions and conclusions formulated, along with suggestions for future work.

RESUMO

Among the challenges faced by regulatory authorities in the water sector, the large number of municipal supply services to be inspected and the cost of on-site inspections are prominent. To overcome these issues, decisions regarding the priority of inspections based on indicators is an alternative. Therefore, this research aims to propose and evaluate the Regulatory Index of Quality of Water Supply Service (RIQS) to triage on-site inspections of water supply systems in cities of the state of Minas Gerais. The study was conducted with information from the Regulatory Agency of Water Supply and Sanitation Services of Minas Gerais (Arsae-MG). The methodology followed seven steps: (i) selection of available indicators; (ii) grouping of indicators according to their typology; (iii) screening of indicators; (iv) establishment of standardized scale; (v) evaluation of the relative importance of typologies and indicators, through the adaptation of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP); (vi) determination of the RIQS; and (vii) analysis of results. As a result, we selected 12 indicators to compose the RIQS, which deal with efficiency, effectiveness, and customer relationship. We noticed that the indicator of water supply service coverage (17.2%) had the highest weight in the calculation of the RIQS, and the index of requests for an inspection of the water connection served on time (2.1%) had the lowest weight. In addition, 95.1% of the 591 municipalities evaluated presented excellent or good performance. Based on these results, we show that the RIQS can be used to identify cities with low performance and prioritize inspections in the most urgent water systems. Furthermore, these outcomes reveal the possibility of extending and adapting the methodology to other regulatory agencies around the world for identifying the priority of inspections in water supply systems at a municipal level.

RESUMO

Cervical cancer screening and treatment of screen positives is an important and effective strategy to reduce cervical cancer morbidity and mortality. In order to have an accurate cervical cancer screening and evaluation of positives, the entire Squamocolumnar Junction (SCJ) must be visible. Throughout the life course, the position of the SCJ changes and affects its visibility. SCJ visibility was analyzed among participants screened at the League Against Cancer Clinic in Lima, Peru. Of the 4247 participants screened, the SCJ was fully visible in 49.7% of participants, partially visible in 23.1%, and not visible in 27.2%. Visibility decreased with age, and by age 45 years old, the SCJ was not fully visible in over 50% of participants. Our results show that a high percentage of participants at ages still recommended for screening do not have totally visible SCJ, and we may need to reconsider the upper age limit for screening and find new strategies for evaluation of those with a positive screening test and non-visible SCJ.

Identifying irregularities in restaurants can help minimize contamination risks. The objective of this study was to analyze the irregularities recorded in sanitary inspections of restaurants and similar establishments in Curitiba, Brazil, between 2005 and 2017. The description of the irregularities was categorized following the items and criteria outlined in the Good Practices (GP) legislation for food services of Brazil and the Five Keys to Safer Food, defined by the World Health Organization. Out of the total of 4,098 records, 8,327 irregularities were documented. Concerning GP, there was a prevalence of irregularities described in the years 2005, 2006 and 2013, mainly in the following categories: buildings, installations, equipment, furniture and utensils (42.80%); food preparation (11.54%); documentation and registration (9.92%) and raw materials, ingredients and packaging (9.06%). Regarding the Five Keys to Safer Food, only 3,209 (38.53%) corresponded to this theme, with particular emphasis on maintaining cleanliness (40.70%) and using safe water and raw materials (34.71 %). The study observed a declining trend in the description of irregularities over the study period. However, the successful implementation of GP in restaurants and similar establishments in Brazil remains a challenge, potentially favoring the occurrence of foodborne diseases and increasing the risk to public health.

RESUMO

In this paper, we introduce a one-class learning approach for detecting modifications in assembled printed circuit boards (PCBs) based on photographs taken without tight control over perspective and illumination conditions. Anomaly detection and segmentation are essential for several applications, where collecting anomalous samples for supervised training is infeasible. Given the uncontrolled environment and the huge number of possible modifications, we address the problem as a case of anomaly detection, proposing an approach that is directed towards the characteristics of that scenario, while being well suited for other similar applications. We propose a loss function that can be used to train a deep convolutional autoencoder based only on images of the unmodified board-which allows overcoming the challenge of producing a representative set of samples containing anomalies for supervised learning. We also propose a function that explores higher-level features for comparing the input image and the reconstruction produced by the autoencoder, allowing the segmentation of structures and components that differ between them. Experiments performed on a dataset built to represent real-world situations (which we made publicly available) show that our approach outperforms other state-of-the-art approaches for anomaly segmentation in the considered scenario, while producing comparable results on a more general object anomaly detection task.

Brazil is one of the most diversified countries in the gastronomic field, offering several different foods to its consumers, based on typical dishes or from other cultures. Fish is a perishable food that requires special attention in its processing. Failures in hygienic-sanitary conditions, coupled with the consumption of undercooked food, can lead to contamination and the proliferation of bacteria, which raises significant concerns regarding public health. The study analyzed the microbiological aspects of sushi sold in the city of Rio Branco - Acre, verifying the quality parameters and the hygienic sanitary conditions, comparing the obtained results with the current legislation established by ANVISA. Five establishments were randomly selected, and three samples of nigiri sushi were chosen from each establishment. The microbiological analysis included total coliforms and thermotolerant coliforms using the multiple tube technique, as well as depth seeding technique for mesophiles and Salmonella. It was found that all samples exhibited bacterial growth and suggested the presence of Salmonella, rendering the food unsuitable for consumption and indicating a failure in the hygienic-sanitary conditions under which the sushi was processed and stored. Greater inspection by the responsible authorities and improved care by establishments selling sushi in the city of Rio Branco are necessary to ensure that the product sold is of good quality and does not pose harm to the health of consumers.(AU)

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to compare the performance of two visual criteria used for the detection of caries around restorations in permanent teeth. In this delayed-type cross-sectional study, the study sample was randomly allocated to one of two visual criteria for the assessment of restorations as follows: (a) International Dental Federation (FDI) criteria, considers marginal staining, marginal adaptation, and caries recurrence and (b) Caries Associated with Restorations or Sealants (CARS) criteria, defined by the International Caries Classification and Management System. A calibrated examiner assessed the restorations using two reference standards as follows: (i) for restorations requiring operative interventions (repair/replacement), the restoration was partially or totally removed and the presence or absence of carious tissue was assessed; and (ii) for restorations requiring nonoperative intervention, follow-up for a period of 1 year was recommended to allow identification of the presence of new lesions not detected at baseline. The sensitivity, specificity, area under receiver operating characteristic curve (Az), and accuracy of the criteria were assessed. The study included 305 restorations. The FDI marginal staining parameter had the lowest Az value (Az = 0.501), while similar sensitivity was observed between the CARS (62.0%), FDI presence of caries (65.0%), and FDI marginal adaptation (74.0%) parameters. CARS exhibited the highest specificity (88.3%) and accuracy (85.6%). The CARS criteria exhibited better specificity and accuracy in detecting caries around restorations, followed by the FDI criteria for caries recurrence and marginal adaptation. Considering marginal staining or combining multiple marginal features to assess secondary caries resulted in an increased risk of false-positive outcomes and overtreatment.

RESUMO

This paper uses the internet-based biosurveillance to describe the Brazilian e-commerce of non-inspected dairy products and maps its traditional sale in a medium-sized city (Londrina). We searched the sales of illegal dairy products on Facebook Marketplace and conducted a census of street markets and a random sample of formal markets. Although prohibited in Brazil, consumers can easily find informal dairy products on internet and retail sale. In addition, 7% of the food products hold a false label to mimic food inspection. The e-commerce was linked with regions with higher access to technology and Human Development Index (HDI). We believe that our approach shows a step forward in the public health interventions and could be replicated stimulating debates about policies required to improve the public health surveillance.

RESUMO

Introduction: Nicaragua has one of the highest cervical cancer death rates (19.4 per 100,000) compared to other Central American countries. This integrative review of the literature synthesizes cervical cancer prevention interventions in Nicaragua. Methods: The literature search was performed through Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Cochrane Library, Embase, PubMed, and Scopus. The six articles included in this integrative review were appraised using the Quality Assessment Tool for Quantitative Studies (QAQTS). Results: Greater knowledge of Pap smears, the human papillomavirus (HPV), and cervical cancer was significantly associated with positive screening beliefs. Barriers to cervical cancer screening included access to Pap smears, preference for female providers, and the length of time to receive screening results and treatment. The probability of having a Pap smear was 94% higher among those who had a recent doctor's visit compared to those who had not. While clinician samples are more accurate in detecting HPV or cervical cancer, self-sampling was stated by the participants to be preferred. Conclusion: A focus on the higher efficacy of clinician sampling and providing more factual information about cervical cancer and its screening through trusted community-based efforts, such as charlas, would be more likely to encourage testing and thereby reduce the rate of cervical cancer in Nicaragua.

RESUMO

The aimed of the study was to evaluate the quality of raw milk from some suppliers in rural and urban areas and to test the hypothesis that it is unsafe for direct consumption. The study was conducted with suppliers in rural and urban areas in Presidente Médici municipality, Rondônia state. The method of the Ministério da Agricultura, Pecuária e Abastecimento (MAPA), was used, which consists of titrating a portion of the sample with a sodium hydroxide solution of known concentration, using phenolphthalein as an indicator. According to Brazilian legislation and literature, stability of Alizarol, foreign substances, Chloride, Hypochlorite, Hydrogen Peroxide and Colostrum were analyzed. Microbiological analysis, standard plate count (SPC) and quantification of thermotolerant coliforms were also performed using the most probable number (MPN) technique. Values above the limits established by legislation were found, mainly for temperature and titleable acidity, in addition to stability results against Alizarol and the presence of colostrum. There were high microbial contents with regard to SPC, and, in this case, the presence of pathogenic microorganisms cannot be disregarded. The presence of thermotolerant coliforms may indicate probable contact of milk with feces. Therefore, it is considered that the samples analyzed here are not safe for ingestion in the raw form.(AU)

Bovine fasciolosis is a neglected parasitic zoonosis that causes economic losses to beef production chains due to liver condemnation at abattoirs. Despite the characterization of Bovine fasciolosis in several areas of Brazil, an update on its prevalence in the states of Rio de Janeiro and Espirito Santo is lacking. Thus, fasciolosis prevalence from 2018 to 2021 is presented here according to cattle origin (municipalities of both states). In addition, the associated economic impact on an abbatoir was analyzed through liver condemnation of bovines from both states. The prevalence of fasciolosis in the state of Espírito Santo (10.4%) was significantly higher than Rio de Janeiro (3.6%) (P < 0.01), and resulted in an economic loss of US$12,678.60 for the abattoir. The following municipalities located in the state of Espírito Santo presented prevalences above the mean (10.3%) established in the study: Vargem Alta, Anchieta, Cachoeiro do Itapemirim, Castelo, Atilio Vivacqua, Apiacá and Ibitirama. Thus, majority of these municipalities are considered high-risk areas. Although, there is an aparrent reduction of fasciolosis prevalence, it continues to be a cause of economic losses in abattoirs especially in the state of Espírito Santo. Accordingly, prophylactic measures must still be adopted in cattle farms.

The inspection of products of animal origin, carried out by veterinary agricultural inspectors, is based on the Brazilian legislation described in the Regulation of Industrial and Sanitary Inspection of Products of Animal Origin of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply. On March 29, 2017, Decree No. 9,013 was published, which repeals Decree No. 30,691, of 1952, with this, major changes occurred in the legislation described in RIISPOA, such as the criteria used for judging carcasses. The objective of this study was to verify whether these changes had an impact on condemnations of bovine carcasses because of cysticercosis and tuberculosis in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. The number of animals slaughtered and the number of carcasses condemned because of tuberculosis and cysticercosis between 2014 and 2020 were obtained from the database of the Agricultural Defense System (SDA), the official data system of the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock and Rural Development (SEAPDR), it was possible to observe an increase in the number of cases of carcasses condemned because of cysticercosis and a reduction of animals affected by the disease in the period after the changes in the regulation. The number of carcasses condemned because of tuberculosis, as well as the number of animals affected by the disease, remained stable after the changes in the regulation. The results showed that the changes in federal legislation had a real impact on the historical series of condemnations of bovine carcasses due to cysticercosis in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. In carcasses affected by tuberculosis, the impact of carcass condemnation on the historical series after changes was not significant.

The present study identified virulence genes and pathological changes caused by Escherichia coli in chicken carcasses condemned for airsacculitis and assessed if the histopathological examination and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were effective for studies like this. Trachea, liver, and lung were collected from 30 chickens with suspected airsacculitis that has been condemned in the inspection line. The samples were analyzed by PCR to simultaneously identify two virulence genes (iss and tsh genes) and for histopathological testing. PCR efficiently genotypically characterize the E. coli isolates, where the virulence genes iss and tsh were found in three birds simultaneously. The histopathological examination detected a predominance of heterophils and mononuclear cells in the trachea (100%), lung (90%), and liver (13.3%). The liver was the organ where practically no alteration was diagnosed. The results of multiplex PCR for the tsh and iss virulence genes indicate the great potential of the approach in the characterization of E. coli isolates. Unspecific identification did not occur, thus making it necessary to use technologies for the identification and prevention of this agent in aviaries and poultry abattoirs.
