RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to verify whether physiological components [vertical jumps (Squat Jump - SJ and Countermovement Jump - CMJ), eccentric utilization ratio (EUR) of vertical jumps, running economy (RE), metabolic cost (C MET ), first and second ventilatory threshold (VT1 and VT2) maximal oxygen uptake (VO2MAX)] can predict maximal endurance running performance. METHODS: Twenty male runners performed maximal vertical jumps, submaximal running at constant speeds, and maximal incremental running test. Before, we measured anthropometric parameters (body mass and height) and registered the training history and volume. SJ and CMJ tests were evaluated prior to running tests. Initially, the oxygen uptake (VO2) was collected at rest in the orthostatic position for 6 min. Soon after, a 10-min warm-up was performed on the treadmill at 10 km⋅h-1, followed by two 5-min treadmill rectangular tests at 12 and 16 km⋅h-1 monitored by a gas analyzer. After that, the runners performed a maximal incremental test, where the VT1, VT2, and VO2MAX were evaluated, as well as the maximum running speed (vVO2MAX). Thus, RE and C MET were calculated with data obtained during rectangular running tests. Multivariate stepwise regression analyses were conducted to measure the relationship between independent variables (height and power of SJ and CMJ, EUR; RE and C MET 12 and 16 km⋅h-1 ; VT1, VT2, and VO2MAX), as predictors of maximal running performance (vVO2MAX), with significance level at α = 0.05. RESULTS: We found that VO2MAX and RE at 16 km⋅h-1 predict 81% of performance (vVO2MAX) of endurance runners (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The main predictors of the maximal incremental running test performance were VO2MAX and RE.

RESUMO

Abstract Aim: This study aims to investigate the concordance between two cycle ergometers for variables measured in the test of maximum incremental effort. Methods: This correlation study enrolled 15 inactive women (19,2 ± 4,0 years old). At random, the participants performed two maximal effort incremental tests (MEIT), using cycle ergometers (Keiser-M3 and Ergo-167) on different days with a minimum interval of 72 hours. The test had stages of two minutes, and two-step increments were carried out at the end of each stage. Lactate concentration ([LAC]), and rated perceived exertion (RPE) were collected, in addition to monitoring oxygen uptake (VO2) and heart rate (HR). The Paired t-test was carried out to compare physiologic variables, Lin's test was used for correlation, and Bland Altman was used to measuring concordances among variables. Results: The correlations between physiologic parameters were considered strong for HR on the anaerobic threshold (Keiser M3 = 146 ± 14 bpm; Ergo-167 = 149 ± 9 bpm; r = 0.762), greater blood lactate value (Keiser M3 = 9,97 ± 2,51 mmol/L; Ergo-167 = 9.71 ± 2.56 mmol/L; r = 0.820), VO2max (Keiser M3 = 38,37 ± 6,97 mL/kg/min; Ergo-167 = 36.06 ± 8.4 mL/kg/min; r = 0,806) and HRmax (Keiser M3 = 186 ± 53 bpm; Ergo-167 = 188 ± 11 bpm; r = 0.716). Conclusion: The results show the feasibility of using the cycle ergometer Keiser, model M3, to perform the maximal effort incremental test, whereas there was high concordance in the physiologic responses in both ergometers for inactive women.

RESUMO

Was compared exercise tolerance, respiratory and cardiovascular functions between non--diabetics and type 2 diabetics individuals (T2DM) without chronic heart failure. Thirteen normaglycemic men (non-diabetic group NDG) and eight T2DM (diabetic group DG) performed a cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPX) on motor treadmill (test initiated at 3 km.h-1 with an increment of 1 km.h-1 every two minutes) to evaluate respiratory function, cardiovascular parameters and exercise tolerance. Workload and oxygen uptake ( O2) values at ventilatory threshold were signifi cantly lower for DG (DG: 5.6 ± 0.5 km/h and 13.1 ± 3.8 mL.(kg.min)-1; NDG: 6.5 ± 0.5 km/h and 16.4 ± 2.8 mL.(kg.min)-1; p < 0.05). Peak O2 and workload were signifi cantly lower for DG (22.7 ± 5.7 mL.(kg.min)-1;8.2 ± 0.7 km/h) when compared with NDG (30.8 ± 5.4 mL.(kg.min)-1; 11.6 ± 1.5 km/h). Oxygen uptake effi ciency slope (OUES) and circulatory power were signifi cantly lower (p < 0.05) in DG, although no signifi cant alterations were found in functional capacity and ventilatory effi ciency. T2DM in absence of chronic heart failure presented exercise intolerance and lower cardiorespiratory fi tness. Peak circulatory power and OUES were also reduced in these individuals....(AU)

[AU]

Introduction: The regular practice of physical activity is associated with improved health status, increased functional capacity, increased muscle strength and reduced mortality from heart disease. Although the benefits of regular exercise are well established in the literature, adaptations in inspiratory muscle strength and endurance are controversial. Objective: To test the hypothesis that there is no difference in the strength and resistance of the inspiratory muscles between active and sedentary individuals. Methods: Cross-sectional observational study. It was evaluated individuals between 18 and 30 years old, both sexes and healthy. The volunteers were divided into active and sedentary according to the classification of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACMS). Individuals had maximal inspiratory muscle strength (IMS) determined through the POWERbreathe® K5 inspiratory muscle trainer, which injects this variable as Sindex. The inspiratory muscle strength was evaluated through an incremental test. For the comparison of the means the student's t-test was applied for symmetrical distribution, p <0.05. The study was approved by the research ethics committee with CAAE: 37781014.4.0000.5544. Results: A total of 92 individuals were evaluated. Of these, 55 (60%) were classified as active and 57 (62%) were male. When comparing Sindex between active and sedentary (128 ± 26/119 ± 24 cmH2O, p = 0.85) and exhaustion in the incremental test (63.2 ± 16.1%. p = 0.095), respectively. Conclusion: Active individuals do not present stronger and stronger inspiratory muscles when compared to sedentary ones. [AU]

RESUMO

Purpose: To compare the efficiency of an aerobic physical training program prescribed according to either velocity associated with maximum oxygen uptake (vVO2max) or peak running speed obtained during an incremental treadmill test (Vpeak_K) in mice. Methods: Twenty male Swiss mice, 60 days old, were randomly divided into two groups with 10 animals each: 1. group trained by vVO2max (GVO2), 2. group trained by Vpeak_K (GVP). After the adaptation training period, an incremental test was performed at the beginning of each week to adjust training load and to determine the amount of VO2 and VCO2 fluxes consumed, energy expenditure (EE) and run distance during the incremental test. Mice were submitted to 4 weeks of aerobic exercise training of moderate intensity (velocity referring to 70% of vVO2max and Vpeak_K) in a programmable treadmill. The sessions lasted from 30 to 40 min in the first week, to reach 60 min in the fourth week, in order to provide the mice with a moderate intensity exercise, totaling 20 training sessions. Results: Mice demonstrated increases in VO2max (ml·kg-1·min-1) (GVO2 = 49.1% and GVP = 56.2%), Vpeak_K (cm·s-1) (GVO2 = 50.9% and GVP = 22.3%), EE (ml·kg-0,75·min-1) (GVO2 = 39.9% and GVP = 51.5%), and run distance (cm) (GVO2 = 43.5% and GVP = 33.4%), after 4 weeks of aerobic training (time effect, P < 0.05); there were no differences between the groups. Conclusions: Vpeak_K, as well as vVO2max, can be adopted as an alternative test to determine the performance and correct prescription of systemized aerobic protocol training to mice.

Abstract The present study aimed to verify if the incidence of plateau is associated with anaerobic capacity. Therefore, nine physically active male (age: 23 ± 4 yr; body mass: 72.4 ± 8.2 kg; height: 176.4 ± 6.8 cm; VO2max: 41.3 ± 5.7 ml.kg-1.min-1) participated in the present study. The subjects in a cycle ergometer the following tests: a) maximum incremental test to determination of VO2max; b) six submaximal tests for determination of supra maximum demand of O2; c) supra maximum test for maximum accumulated oxygen deficit (MAOD) determination. The plateau was identified when the difference in the VO2 in the last two stages of incremental test was ≤ 2.1 ml.kg-1.min-1. It was observed an inverse correlation, although no significant, between MAOD and VO2 plateau (r = -0,61; > 0,05). Thus, it appears that anaerobic capacity is not a decisive factor for determining the incidence of VO2 plateau in physically active individuals.(AU)

RESUMO

Severe obesity affects metabolism with potential to influence the lactate and glycemic response to different exercise intensities in untrained and trained rats. Here we evaluated metabolic thresholds and maximal aerobic capacity in rats with severe obesity and lean counterparts at pre- and post-training. Zucker rats (obese: n = 10, lean: n = 10) were submitted to constant treadmill bouts, to determine the maximal lactate steady state, and an incremental treadmill test, to determine the lactate threshold, glycemic threshold and maximal velocity at pre and post 8 weeks of treadmill training. Velocities of the lactate threshold and glycemic threshold agreed with the maximal lactate steady state velocity on most comparisons. The maximal lactate steady state velocity occurred at higher percentage of the maximal velocity in Zucker rats at pre-training than the percentage commonly reported and used for training prescription for other rat strains (i.e., 60%) (obese = 78 ± 9% and lean = 68 ± 5%, P < 0.05 vs. 60%). The maximal lactate steady state velocity and maximal velocity were lower in the obese group at pre-training (P < 0.05 vs. lean), increased in both groups at post-training (P < 0.05 vs. pre), but were still lower in the obese group at post-training (P < 0.05 vs. lean). Training-induced increase in maximal lactate steady state, lactate threshold and glycemic threshold velocities was similar between groups (P > 0.05), whereas increase in maximal velocity was greater in the obese group (P < 0.05 vs. lean). In conclusion, lactate threshold, glycemic threshold and maximal lactate steady state occurred at similar exercise intensity in Zucker rats at pre- and post-training. Severe obesity shifted metabolic thresholds to higher exercise intensity at pre-training, but did not attenuate submaximal and maximal aerobic training adaptations.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to investigate whether the maximal power output (Pmax) during an incremental test was dependent on the curvature constant (W') of the power-time relationship. Thirty healthy male subjects (maximal oxygen uptake = 3.58 ± 0.40 L·min(-1)) performed a ramp incremental cycling test to determine the maximal oxygen uptake and Pmax, and 4 constant work rate tests to exhaustion to estimate 2 parameters from the modeling of the power-time relationship (i.e., critical power (CP) and W'). Afterwards, the participants were ranked according to their magnitude of W'. The median third was excluded to form a high W' group (HIGH, n = 10), and a low W' group (LOW, n = 10). Maximal oxygen uptake (3.84 ± 0.50 vs. 3.49 ± 0.37 L·min(-1)) and CP (213 ± 22 vs. 200 ± 29 W) were not significantly different between HIGH and LOW, respectively. However, Pmax was significantly greater for the HIGH (337 ± 23 W) than for the LOW (299 ± 40 W). Thus, in physically active individuals with similar aerobic parameters, W' influences the Pmax during incremental testing.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to determine the relative and absolute reliability of second lactate turnpoint using fixed and individual blood lactate method in competitive cyclists. Twenty-eight male, well-trained cyclists (30.2 ± 10.1 years, 72.0 ± 7.4 kg, 177.3 ± 4.7 cm) were recruited to participate in this study. Cyclists completed two incremental cycling tests to exhaustion over a period of 7 days to determine their peak power output, maximal oxygen uptake, maximal heart rate, maximal blood lactate concentration and two lactate turnpoint criteria. The fixed blood concentration criterion (3.5 mM) and an individual criterion were assessed by a lactate-power curve, considering power output, heart rate and oxygen uptake. The main finding of this study was that both lactate turnpoint criteria showed identical low within-subject variation for power output (2.8% coefficient of variation). High values for test-retest correlations ranging from r = 0.70 to r = 0.94 were found for all variables in both threshold criteria. In conclusion, the individual and fixed method to determine the second lactate turnpoint showed similar high absolute and relative reliability in competitive cyclists.

Incremental treadmill tests are widely used for prescription of aerobic and anaerobic training. Physiological and kinematics parameters are changed by the progressive nature of this activity. However, there is no consensus on how anthropometric characteristics may affect the incremental test performance. Therefore, the aims of this study were (1) to verify the effects of the incremental treadmill test on the blood lactate concentration ([LAC]), glucose concentration ([GLU]), step frequency (SF) and step length (SL), and (2) to correlate anthropometric data (body mass, height, percentbody fat) to changes in [LAC] and [GLU]. Thirteen healthy males volunteered to this study and performed an incremental running test on a treadmill (start: 8 km/h, with progressive increases [1 km/h] at each three minute until exhaustion). [LAC] and [GLU] were registered before and 3 min after the incremental test performance. SF and SL were registered for each running speed by digital images at the sagital plane. As results, we verified that [LAC] and [GLU] before the incremental test (1.94 ± 0.4 mmol/L and 94.3 ± 7 mg/dL, respectively) were significantly lower (p < 0.05) than after the incremental test (9.51 ± 2.7 mmol/L and 126 ± 16. mg/dL, respectively). In addition, SF and SL presented significant increase (p < 0.05) throughout the incremental test. [LAC] presented inverse and significant correlations (p < 0.05) to height and body mass. Thus, an incremental treadmill running test affects kinematic (SF and SL) and physiological conditions (muscular fatigue, as consequence of the speed increase). Besides this, shorter and lighter subjects may present higher metabolite concentrations after this type of test.
