RESUMO

Bulimulus bonariensis is considered a species of relevance to agribusiness, having been declared a pest with indirect damage because of its negative effects on several crops such as soybeans, chickpeas, and corn in central and northern Argentina. The objective of this work was to analyze the growth pattern of a population born under laboratory conditions, to explore population aspects such as survival and mortality, to estimate the age and size at gonadal maturity and first reproduction, and to contribute to the knowledge of the reproductive biology of this gastropod. From the clutches obtained, the basic biologic parameters were calculated and the individuals hatched under laboratory conditions counted and measured every two weeks. The clutches contained an average of 44 eggs, which took about 13.7 days to hatch at a birth rate of 41.82%. The growth pattern in the five clutches was analyzed individually, and the logistic model used was the one with the highest degree of fit to that observed growth pattern, followed by the Gompertz model, and finally the von Bertalanffy model. In addition, the models were applied to the 102 specimens analyzed together as a cohort, where the best fitting model was also proved to be the logistic growth model. A concave type III survival curve was obtained from the horizontal life table. The cohort was reduced by 48% during the first 50 days after birth. Beyond one month of hatching, life expectancy gradually increased and remained high between 65-302 days of life. After day 330, life expectancy decreased and only 13.72% exceeded one year of birth, with an average length of 16.68 mm. The last specimen died after 23 months at a total length of 20.24 mm, and the life expectancy was estimated at almost three years. In addition, it was inferred that gonadal maturity, when these gastropods reach 12 mm of total shell length, is reached after 200 days of life. Therefore, the individuals that are born are able to reproduce for the first time a year after birth, when they have the approximate size of 16.68 mm.

RESUMO

The aim of this work is to estimate the effect of Imatinib, exosomes, and Imatinib-exosomes mixture in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). For this purpose, mathematical models based on Gompertzian and logistic growth differential equations were proposed. The models contained parameters representing the effects of the three components on CML proliferation. Parameters estimation was performed under the Bayesian statistical approach. Experimental data reported in the literature were used, corresponding to four trials of a human leukemia xenograft in BALB/c female rats over a period of forty days. The models were fitted to the following growth dynamics: normal tumor growth, growth with exosomes, growth with Imatinib, and growth with exosomes-Imatinib mixture. For the proposed logistic growth model, it was determined that when using Imatinib treatment the growth rate is 0.93 (95% CrI: 84.33-99.64) slower and reduces the tumor volume to approximately 10% (95% CrI : 8.67-10.81). In the presence of exosome treatment, the growth rate is 0.83 (95% CrI: 1.52-16.59) faster and the tumor volume is expanded by 40% (95% CrI: 25.36-57.28). Finally, in the presence of Imatinib-exosomes mixture treatment, the growth rate is 0.82 (95% CrI: 76.87-88.51) slower and the tumor volume is reduced by 95% (95% CrI: 86.76-99.85). It is concluded that the presence of exosomes partially inactivates the effect of the Imatinib drug on tumor growth in a mouse xenograft model.

RESUMO

We present the software ModInterv as an informatics tool to monitor, in an automated and user-friendly manner, the evolution and trend of COVID-19 epidemic curves, both for cases and deaths. The ModInterv software uses parametric generalized growth models, together with LOWESS regression analysis, to fit epidemic curves with multiple waves of infections for countries around the world as well as for states and cities in Brazil and the USA. The software automatically accesses publicly available COVID-19 databases maintained by the Johns Hopkins University (for countries as well as states and cities in the USA) and the Federal University of Viçosa (for states and cities in Brazil). The richness of the implemented models lies in the possibility of quantitatively and reliably detecting the distinct acceleration regimes of the disease. We describe the backend structure of software as well as its practical use. The software helps the user not only to understand the current stage of the epidemic in a chosen location but also to make short term predictions as to how the curves may evolve. The app is freely available on the internet (http://fisica.ufpr.br/modinterv), thus making a sophisticated mathematical analysis of epidemic data readily accessible to any interested user.

RESUMO

The COVID-19 pandemic has proven the importance of mathematical tools to understand the evolution of epidemic outbreaks and provide reliable information to the general public and health authorities. In this perspective, we have developed ModInterv, an online software that applies growth models to monitor the evolution of the COVID-19 epidemic in locations chosen by the user among countries worldwide or states and cities in the USA or Brazil. This paper describes the software capabilities and its use both in recent research works and by technical committees assisting government authorities. Possible applications to other epidemics are also briefly discussed.

RESUMO

Abstract: Processes producing sigmoid curves are common in many areas such as biology, agrarian sciences, demography and engineering. Several mathematical functions have been proposed for modeling sigmoid curves. Some models such as the logistic, Gompertz, Richards and Weibull are widely used. This work introduces the Gudermannian function as an option for modeling sigmoid growth curves. The original function was transformed and the resulting equation was called the "Gudermannian growth model." This model was applied to four sets of experimental growth data to illustrate its practical application. The results were compared with those obtained by the logistic and Gompertz models. Since all these models are nonlinear in the parameters, the statistical properties of the least squares estimators were evaluated using measures of nonlinearity. For each experimental data set, the Akaike's corrected information criterion was utilized to discriminate among the models. In general, the Gudermannian model fitted better to the experimental data than the logistic and Gompertz models. The results showed that the Gudermannian model can be a good alternative to the classical sigmoid models.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT In order to estimate the base temperature (Bt) of growth through the appearance of leaves and calculate the phyllochron for kikuyu grass, three plots were established on three farms in the Provincia of Ubaté (Cundinamarca, Colombia) located at different altitudes (2560, 2640, 3143 m. a. s. l.). Measurements were made in four cycles in a period of eight months. The Bt was estimated by the least coefficient of variation method using a second order regression model and the model obtained was validated by the cross-validation method. The Bt values for the first, second, third and fourth leafwere 4.02, 3.68, 3.93, and 3.62 °C, respectively. For the appearance of the first leaf, the kikuyu required more thermal time (TT) (97.5 accumulated growing degree days (AGDD)) than for the second (74.2 AGDD), third (73.8 AGDD) and fourth leaf (76.0 AGDD) (p <0.05). There were no differences in TT among farms (p> 0.05). There was a tendency to a greater number of days required to reach each leaf stage in the farm located at higher altitude and with lower mean temperature. The validation showed an adequate adjustment (r2 = 0.94) and a substantial concordance (CCC = 0.97) between the observed values and the predicted values for the estimated TT with the Bt value obtained for each leaf stage. The results ofBt for kikuyu grass obtained, will allow to make more precise predictions about the phyllochron and generate growth models close to reality.

The early arrival and colonization of species belonging to the family Calliphoridae (Insecta: Diptera) on a corpse represent one of the most reliable means of estimating minimum postmortem interval (PMImin). However, information on the development and life cycles of some Argentine species in this family is not complete. The objective of this work was to contribute new information regarding the larval body size of neotropical species that allow, through the construction of forensic methods, the estimation of a more precise and specific PMImin. This work was conducted on laboratory cultures of larvae of Lucilia ochricornis (Wiedemann) and Lucilia purpurascens (Walker) using as average temperatures: 13.4, 15.1, 22.6, and 23.3°C, which represent the four seasons of the year for the province of Salta. With this information, we constructed isomegalen diagrams and growth models for the obtained variables of larval length and body weight. The mean values of length and body weight differ between both species, indicating that L. purpurascens exceeded L. ochricornis in both variables. In contrast, within each species the mean length and weight remained unchanged between culture temperatures for the three larval instars. Isomegalen diagrams can be used for the entire range of temperatures worked in the laboratory, but the body size entered is approximate. The growth models allow the use of point data but are specific for each culture temperature used.

RESUMO

he age and growth of Pseudoplatystoma corruscans, is analyzed on specimens landed in Puerto Antequera, Province of Chaco, Argentina. The study is based on length frequency distribution of 1192 individuals and growth marks of 293 pectoral spines. Previously to age assignation based on spines readings, we performed analyses that ruled out age-associated resorption of rings and corroborated the annual periodicity of mark formation. The average sizes of the radius of each ring were obtained, and the total length of fish were back-calculated to the time of the ring formation, by the regression model fitted between the total radius of the spines to the respective sizes of each fish. Such data showed a good fitting to growth models of von Bertalanffy, Gompertz and logistic for both sexes separately. Results indicate that the study of the species growth must be carried out for each sex separately and that the fishing regulations must consider this characteristic of the species since the current management guidelines could be promoting differential capture by sexes.(AU)

This study provides information on the population dynamics of the smooth hammerhead shark Sphyrna zygaena in the central-southeast Pacific Ocean. The samples were obtained from artisanal fisheries from 2008 to 2013 to analyse cohorts, growth, mortality, abundance and recruitment using methods based on length and relative age and an inference multi-model. According to the von Bertalanffy growth model, the results indicated that the species showed from three to seven cohorts annually and slow growth (Wi = 57.20%): L∞ = 292.86 cm, K = 0.141 per year and t0 = -2.26. Length of sexual maturity was 239.30 and 209.10 cm at first capture; the average natural mortality value was 0.231 per year, by fishing 0.051 per year with a total mortality of 0.26 1 per year and exploitation rate of 0.15. Interannual variability was recorded in biomass with an average of 7367.24 tonnes, as well as a spatial permanence pattern. The results suggest that the La Niña event biologically favours the population in the area. The information from this study is essential for better understanding the species population and serves as a basis for future actions of management and conservation of S. zygaena.

RESUMO

The cattle breed Blanco Orejinegro (BON) is an important animal genetic resource in Colombia that needs to be studied to identify its productive benefits for Colombian livestock. The aim of this work was to establish the best linear model that explains the variability for birth weight, weaning weight and yearling weight, and estimate the effect of the serological status for Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD) and Bovine Leukosis (BL) in BON cattle in Colombia. The information on animal weighings belonging to 14 BON cattle herds, was collected and cleansed. Using the least squares method, 12 linear models were evaluated including as fixed effects, factors such as herd, sex, weighing month, birth order, season (rainy or dry), birth year, and contemporary group (formed by the concatenation of the factors herd, sex, and birth year). The weighing age was included as a covariate for weaning and yearling weights. For the selection of a model that best describes each parameter, the criteria for choosing models, such as Akaike information criterion (AIC), Bayesian Information criterion (BIC), coefficient of determination (R2 ), and the sum of squares of the error (SSE), were considered. The model that included the contemporary group showed the best fit, being also the best to describe the three parameters evaluated, since, of the four criteria considered for its evaluation, AIC and SSE showed the lowest values and the highest R2 . With this model, weight predictions with higher precision were able to be performed. Employing indirect ELISA screening tests of blood plasma, the serological status of each animal was estimated for BVD and BL viral infections. The serological status of these two viral infections was included in the best-fit model. There was no significant effect of the serological status on the parameters evaluated, so there are indications that animals that came in contact with the virus were not affected during growth.(AU)

ABSTRACT Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus is a plant-growth promoting endophytic bacterium used as a microbial inoculant for different crops. The objective of this work was to apply different mathematical models to represent its growth in a batch submerged culture employing a 3-L bioreactor and using sugarcane molasses and sucrose as energy sources. The time profile of pH, cell biomass, and total sugars was obtained. Models studied were compared considering their fit quality and complexity, and a parametric sensitivity analysis was performed. Four- and five-parameter models with expressions involving substrate and biomass inhibition effects were considered. The Herbert-Pirt-Contois model achieved the highest fit quality with determination coefficients of 0.888 and 0.425 for biomass and substrate, respectively. These values indicate a higher correspondence between the experimental data of biomass concentration and the data calculated by the model, compared to results obtained for total sugars for which this correspondence was lower. This model reached the best combination considering the fit quality and complexity according to the Akaike's information criterion. The kinetic study performed enabled to observe a bi-phasic behavior in the growth stage of the bacterium when grown on molasses, and a growth limitation effect due to biomass concentration. The outcomes obtained provide a mathematical description useful for design, scale-up, and operation of a future process for the production of a microbial inoculant based on G. diazotrophicus.

RESUMO

Genidens genidens is a species susceptible to population declines in view of their reproductive biology peculiarities. Morphometric differences between sexes are observed in the literature, and these differences should also be evident in otolith development. Growth patterns are one of the most important biological characteristics regarding population dynamics and management. In this context, the aim of the present study is to describe this species relative growth and identify differences between sex life cycles. Somatic growth-otolith growth relationships and somatic length-weight relationships were estimated based on two methodologies; the Huxley and the polyphasic allometric models. Both models demonstrated different growth patterns between sexes. The three axes of otolith growth were adequate descriptors of growth, and the results of the Huxley model demonstrated distinct growth patterns between sexes, with male otoliths larger in all three measured axes. In the polyphase model, male otoliths were thicker, while female otoliths were longer and higher. Both sexes presented similar length-weight relationships, which may indicate that oocyte production and parental care lead to similar costs for this species.(AU)

Abstract Depression and stress have been related with poor Health Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) prognosis. However, it is not clear when these depressive symptoms should be measured. A sample of 177 Coronary Heart Disease patients were followed for 15 months aimed to compare the effect of depression and stress measure at time of hospitalization and three months later on the physical HRQoL trajectory. Linear growth models' results showed that depression and stress after discharge are negatively correlated with the physical HRQoL and depressive symptoms negatively affect the prognosis of these patients.

This study aimed to assess the capability of 97 epidemic S. enterica strains belonging to 18 serovars to form biofilm. Five strains characterized as strong biofilm-producers, belonging to distinct serovars (S. Enteritidis 132, S. Infantis 176, S. Typhimurium 177, S. Heidelberg 281 and S. Corvallis 297) were assayed for adhesion/biofilm formation on stainless steel surfaces. The experiments were conducted in different combinations of NaCl (0, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10% w/v), pH (4, 5, 6 and 7) and temperatures (8 °C, 12 °C, 20 °C and 35 °C). Only adhesion was assumed to occur when S. enterica counts were ≥3 and <5 log CFU/cm2, whereas biofilm formation was defined as when the counts were ≥5 log CFU/cm2. The binary responses were used to develop models to predict the probability of adhesion/biofilm formation on stainless steel surfaces by five strains belonging to different S. enterica serovars. A total of 99% (96/97) of the tested S. enterica strains were characterized as biofilm-producers in the microtiter plate assays. The ability to form biofilm varied (P < 0.05) within and among the different serovars. Among the biofilm-producers, 21% (20/96), 45% (43/96), and 35% (34/96) were weak, moderate and strong biofilm-producers, respectively. The capability for adhesion/biofilm formation on stainless steel surfaces under the experimental conditions studied varied among the strains studied, and distinct secondary models were obtained to describe the behavior of the five S. enterica tested. All strains showed adhesion at pH 4 up to 4% of NaCl and at 20 °C and 35 °C. The probability of adhesion decreased when NaCl concentrations were >8% and at 8 °C, as well as in pH values ≤ 5 and NaCl concentrations > 6%, for all tested strains. At pH 7 and 6, biofilm formation for S. Enteritidis, S. Infantis, S. Typhimurium, S. Heidelberg was observed up to 6% of NaCl at 35 °C and 20 °C. The predicted boundaries for adhesion were pH values < 5 and NaCl ≥ 4% and at temperatures <20 °C. For biofilm formation, the predicted boundaries were pH values < 5 and NaCl concentrations ≥ 2% and at temperatures <20 °C for all strains. The secondary models obtained describe the variability in boundaries of adhesion and biofilm formation on stainless steel by five strains belonging to different S. enterica serovars. The boundary models can be used to predict adhesion and biofilm formation ability on stainless steel by S. enterica as affected by pH, NaCl and temperature.

RESUMO

Abstract: Ecuador is considered the fishing capital of the Southeastern tropical Pacific with more than 900 native species. Cichlasoma festae represents an economic important freshwater species of much local use. Thus, in this study, our goal was to characterize this fish species during juvenile stages, as the first step for its conservation and valuation, and also for the preparation of proposals for sustainable rural development and formulation of plans for environmentally responsible fisheries management. The study lasted 25 weeks and was undertaken in the ictiohidrographic area of Province of Los Rios, which accounts for 35 % of native fish species in Ecuador. Weekly, the individual biometric parameters total length (L), body width (BW) and body depth (BD) of 90 juveniles of C. festae were measured. Growth was determined using non-linear biological regression models. The average standard length varied between 6.30 cm and 12.25 cm and the average weight varied between 4.99 and 35.71 g. The length-weight relationship was best fit by the equation lnW = -3.92 + 2.96 ln(L), and the species presented negative allometric growth. Finally, the best fit for the growth of C. festae was the Von Bertalanffy's model where L∞ = 19.758 cm, k = 0.028 cm week-1 and t0 = -14.463 week-1. We concluded that to support sustainable and reliable fisheries production studies, the growth record from length may be obtained with standard methods as those evaluated in this study, or may be obtained with new safer tools such as photogrammetry.

Growth is a fundamental biological process, driven by multiple endogenous (intra-individual) and exogenous (environmental) factors that maintain individual fitness and population stability. The current study aims to assess whether individual, spatial (headwaters and floodplains) and inter-sex variation occurs in the growth of Piaractus mesopotamicus in the Cuiabá River basin. Samples were collected monthly from July 2006 to July 2007, at two areas in the Cuiabá River basin (headwaters and floodplain). Three growth models (individuals; individuals and sex factors; individuals and areas factors) were developed and compared the fish growth parameters using Akaike information criterion (AIC). The best fit to the length-at-age data was obtained by a model that considered individual variation and sex. The theoretical maximum average length ( L∞ ) was 64.99 cm for females, and 63.23 cm for males. Females showed a growth rate (k) of 0.230 yr-1and males of 0.196 yr-1. Thus, could be concluded that individual variability and sex were the main sources of variation in P. mesopotamicus somatic growth parameters.(AU)

The objective of this study was to identify the growth curve of live weight of turkeys reared in different systems (intensive and free- range) with the best mathematical model. To achieve this goal, the live weight of male and female turkeys (Large White) reared for 0-18 weeks were used. Logistic, Gompertz, Von Bertalanffy, and Gauss were used to determine the best model for the turkeys. In comparison of the models, values of Coefficient of Determination (R2), Mean Squares of Error (MSE) and Model Efficiency (ME) were used. In Von Bertalanffy model, the coefficient of determinations for males and females were found as 0.9974 and 0.99915 in intensive system and 0.9794 and 0.9804 in Free-Range system, respectively. As a result of this study, because the highest R2 and the lowest MSE were observed in Von Bertalanffy model, it was the best among the models to identify growth curve of the turkeys.
