Abscisic acid (ABA) and gibberellic acid (GA3) are regulators of fruit color and sugar levels, and the application of these hormones is a common practice in commercial vineyards dedicated to the production of table grapes. However, the effects of exogenous ABA and GA3 on wine cultivars remain unclear. We investigated the impact of ABA and GA3 application on Malbec grapevine berries across three developmental stages. We found similar patterns of berry total anthocyanin accumulation induced by both treatments, closely associated with berry H2O2 levels. Quantitative proteomics from berry skins revealed that ABA and GA3 positively modulated antioxidant defense proteins, mitigating H2O2. Consequently, proteins involved in phenylpropanoid biosynthesis were downregulated, leading to decreased anthocyanin content at the almost ripe stage, particularly petunidin-3-G and peonidin-3-G. Additionally, we noted increased levels of the non-anthocyanins E-viniferin and quercetin in the treated berries, which may enhance H2O2 scavenging at the almost ripe stage. Using a linear mixed-effects model, we found statistical significance for fixed effects including the berry H2O2 and sugar contents, demonstrating their roles in anthocyanin accumulation. In conclusion, our findings suggest a common molecular mechanism by which ABA and GA3 influence berry H2O2 content, ultimately impacting anthocyanin dynamics during ripening.

BACKGROUND: Genetic breeding is essential to develop grapevine genotypes adapted to warm climates and resistant to pathogens. Traditionally cultivated Vitis vinifera is susceptible to biotic and abiotic stresses. Winemakers and consumers, however, perceive wines from non-vinifera or hybrid cultivars as inferior. In this study, sensory analyses and comprehensive metabolite profiling by targeted and untargeted approaches were used to investigate the oenological potential of wines from grapes of genotypes developed throughout four breeding cycles to improve climate adaptation, sugar contents and berry color. RESULTS: Novel genotypes had higher yields and the wines exhibited increased contents of polyphenols, including anthocyanins. Volatile monoterpenes in the wines decreased throughout breeding cycles in the absence of selective pressure. Polyphenol contents were higher in intermediate wines, with hydroxytyrosol contents reaching up to three times reported values. Mouthfeel attributes astringency, leafy taste, flavor and body, and persistency showed significant correlation with untargeted features. Supervised model-based analyses of the metabolome effectively discriminate wines from distinct genetic origins. CONCLUSION: Taken together, the results demonstrate the potential of novel grapevine genotypes to a more sustainable viticulture and quality wine production in warm climates. Comprehensive metabolite profiling of the wines reveals that genotype clustering is dependent on the chemical class and that traits not submitted to selective pressure are also altered by breeding. Supervised multivariate models were effective to predict the genetic origin of the wines based on the metabolic profile, indicating the potential of the technique to identify biomarkers for wines from sustainable genotypes. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Grapevine trunk diseases (GTDs) attack the vine's wood, devastating vineyards worldwide. Chile is the world's fourth-largest wine exporter, and Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the most economically important red wine varieties. Botryosphaeria dieback is an important GTD, and Diplodia seriata is one of the main pathogenic species. Biocontrol studies of these pathogens are commonly carried out at different incubation times but at a single temperature. This study aimed to evaluate the biocontrol effect of Chilean PGPB and grapevine endophytic bacteria against D. seriata at different temperatures. We analyzed the biocontrol effect of Pseudomonas sp. GcR15a, Pseudomonas sp. AMCR2b and Rhodococcus sp. PU4, with three D. seriata isolates (PUCV 2120, PUCV 2142 and PUCV 2183) at 8, 22 and 35 °C. Two dual-culture antagonism methods (agar plug diffusion and double plate) were used to evaluate the in vitro effect, and an in vivo test was performed with Cabernet Sauvignon cuttings. In vitro, the greatest inhibitions were obtained using the agar plug diffusion method and at a temperature of 8 °C, where Rhodococcus sp. PU4 obtains a 65% control (average) and Pseudomonas sp. GcR15a a 57% average. At 22 °C, only strains of Pseudomonas sp. show control. At 35 °C, one Pseudomonas strain shows the highest control (38%), on average, similar to tebuconazole (33%), and then Rhodococcus sp. (30%). In vivo, a biocontrol effect is observed against two D. seriata isolates, while the PUCV 2142 proves to be more resistant to control. The biocontrol ability at low temperatures is promising for effective control in the field, where infections occur primarily in winter.

BACKGROUND: Yield, disease tolerance, and climate adaptation are important traits in grapevine genetic breeding programs. Selection for these characteristics causes unpredictable changes in primary and specialized metabolism, affecting the physicochemical properties and chemical composition of the berries and their processed products, juice, and wine. In this study, we investigated the influence of the genetic distance between grapevine genotypes on the chemical signatures of the juices, by integrating comprehensive metabolic profiling to genetic analyses. RESULTS: The studied grapevine cultivars exhibited low genetic diversity. Breeding for agronomic traits promoted higher contents of soluble sugars, total phenolics, and anthocyanins in the juices. Untargeted juice metabolomics identified a total of 147 metabolites, consisting of 30 volatiles, 21 phenolics, and 96 ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS) features. Juices from grapes of the most recent cultivars exhibited increased levels of trans-resveratrol, catechin, and luteolin. The blend of volatiles from juices of later cultivars was also more complex, consisting of 29 distinct metabolites in 'BRS Magna'. Grapes from 'BRS Carmem', an intermediate cultivar, gave the most divergent UHPLC-MS juice profile. CONCLUSION: Contents of soluble solids, total phenolics, and anthocyanins in grape juices were increased by controlled crosses and hybrid selection. Integrative analyses demonstrated that the juices' metabolic profiles accurately represent the cultivars' genetic distances. Juices from 'BRS Violeta' and 'BRS Magna' show relevant positive association with health-related phenolics and a distinct set of odor volatiles, although these characteristics were specifically sought by breeding. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

AIM: This study evaluates the in vitro efficacy of 8-hydroxyquinoline (8HQ) derivatives in controlling the phytopathogenic fungus Phaeomoniella chlamydospora. METHODS AND RESULTS: The in vitro tests assessed the susceptibility to the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), checkerboard assay, mycelial growth (MG) inhibition, and EC50 determination. Among the seven agricultural fungicides tested, tebuconazole (TEB) displayed the lowest MIC, 1.01 µg mL-1, followed by captan (CAP), thiophanate methyl (TM), and mancozeb with MICs of 4.06, 5.46, and 10.62 µg mL-1, respectively. The 8HQ derivatives used in this study were clioquinol and PH 151 (PH) with MICs of 1.09 and 2.02 µg mL-1, respectively. PH associated with TEB and CAP showed synergism and inhibited 95.8% of MG at the highest dose. TEB inhibited 100% of MG at the three highest doses, while associated with PH exhibited the lowest EC50 (0.863 + 0.0381 µg mL-1). CONCLUSIONS: We concluded that the 8HQ derivatives tested controlled effectively the P. chlamydospora in vitro. PH associated with CAP and TEB exhibited a synergistic effect. The association between PH and TM was considered indifferent. IMPACT STATEMENT: This study expands the list of active ingredients tested against P. chlamydospora, with the PH 151 and clioquinol derivatives being tested for the first time. The in vitro efficacy and synergistic action with other fungicides suggest a potential use as a grapevine wound protectant. This association makes it possible to reduce doses and increase the potency of both drugs, reducing the risk of resistance development and harm to humans and the environment.

Several grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) cultivars show a tendency to develop parthenocarpic seedless grapes, affecting fruit yield and quality. This reproductive disorder originates in defective ovule fertilization due to a failure in pollen tube growth. Zinc (Zn) is a crucial trace element, playing a vital role in various physiological and metabolic processes. It is particularly essential for the healthy growth of flowers and fruits. Insufficient zinc has been suggested as a potential reason for issues in this development process. This microelement is taken up through a mechanism that involves transporters, including the ZRT-IRT-like protein (ZIP) gene family, associated with the influx of Zn into the cell. In grapevines, 20 genes for ZIP-type transporters have been described. In this study, we analyzed the expression pattern of VviZIP3 during flower development and employ transgenic methods to assess its transcriptional regulation. Furthermore, through computational examination of the promoter region, we identified two CArG boxes, recognized as responsive elements to MADS transcription factors. These factors play a key role in shaping various components of a flower, such as pollen. Our investigation of the VviZIP3 promoter confirms the functionality of these CArG boxes. Overall, our results suggest that the increased expression of VviZIP3 during flowering is likely under the influence of MADS transcription factors.

Lasiodiplodia theobromae, a grapevine trunk pathogen, is becoming a significant threat to vineyards worldwide. In Peru, it is responsible for Botryosphaeria dieback in many grapevine-growing areas and it has spread rapidly due to its high transmissibility; hence, control measures are urgent. It is known that some endophytic bacteria are strong inhibitors of phytopathogens because they produce a wide range of antimicrobial molecules. However, studies of antimicrobial features from endophytic bacteria are limited to traditional confrontation methods. In this study, a MALDI mass spectrometry-based approach was performed to identify and characterize the antifungal molecules from Bacillus velezensis M1 and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens M2 grapevine endophytic strains. Solid medium antagonism assays were performed confronting B. velezensis M1 - L. theobromae and B. amyloliquefaciens M2 - L. theobromae for antifungal lipopeptides identification. By a MALDI TOF MS it was possible identify mass spectra for fengycin, iturin and surfactin protoned isoforms. Masses spectrums for mycobacillin and mycosubtilin were also identified. Using MALDI Imaging MS we were able to visualize and relate lipopeptides mass spectra of fengycin (1463.9 m/z) and mycobacillin (1529.6 m/z) in the interaction zone during confrontations. The presence of lipopeptides-synthesis genes was confirmed by PCR. Liquid medium antagonism assays were performed for a proteomic analysis during the confrontation of B. velezensis M1 - L. theobromae. Different peptide sequences corresponding to many antifungal proteins and enzymes were identified by MALDI TOF MS/MS. Oxalate decarboxylase bacisubin and flagellin, reported as antifungal proteins, were identified at 99 % identity through peptide mapping. MALDI mass spectrometry-based identification of antifungal molecules would allow the early selection of endophytic bacteria with antifungal features. This omics tool could lead to measures for prevention of grapevine diseases and other economically important crops in Peru.

This is the first viral metagenomic analysis of grapevine conducted in Mexico. During the summer of 2021, 48 plants displaying virus-like symptoms were sampled in Queretaro, an important grapevine-producing area of Mexico, and analyzed for the presence of viruses via high-throughput sequencing (HTS). The results of HTS were verified by real-time RT-PCR following a standardized testing scheme (Protocol 2010). Fourteen different viruses were identified, including grapevine asteroid mosaic-associated virus (GAMaV), grapevine Cabernet Sauvignon reovirus (GCSV), grapevine fanleaf virus (GFLV), grapevine fleck virus (GFkV), grapevine Pinot gris virus (GPGV), grapevine red globe virus (GRGV), grapevine rupestris stem pitting-associated virus (GRSPaV), grapevine rupestris vein feathering virus (GRVFV), grapevine Syrah virus 1 (GSyV-1), grapevine virus B (GVB), and grapevine leafroll-associated viruses 1, 2, 3, 4 (GLRaV1, 2, 3, 4). Additionally, divergent variants of GLRaV4 and GFkV, and a novel Enamovirus-like virus were discovered. This is the first report of GAMaV, GCSV, GLRaV4, GPGV, GRGV, GRVFV, and GSyV-1 infecting grapevines in Mexico; the impact of these pathogens on production is unknown.

Grapevine (Vitis spp.) is one of the most cultivated fruit plants in the world. Vineyard growers apply copper-based products in these crops to prevent fungal diseases, generating worries about Cu contamination in soils and food. In this context, this study identifies prokaryotic communities associated with grapevine plants grown under different levels of Cu-contaminated soils. Moreover, the study isolates new bacteria to improve Cu resistance in plants. Soil Cu content correlated inversely with operational taxonomic units (OTUs) belonging to the groups Acidobacteria (SubGroup 2), Latescibacteria, Pedosphaeraceae, and Candidatus Udaeobacter. A total of 14 new bacterial isolates were obtained from copper-contaminated soils. These isolates produced Indolic Compounds (IC) in a range of 25 to 96 µg mL- 1, highlighting bacterial strains S20 and S26 as the highest producers. These new bacteria also produced siderophores, highlighting strains S19 and S26, which removed 58 and 59% of Fe ions from the CAS complex, respectively. From the in vitro antagonistic activity against Colletotrichum spp. strains, the authors identified some bacterial strains that inhibited phytopathogen growth. Bacterial strain Bacillus sp. S26 was chosen for inoculation experiments in grapevine plants. This bacterial isolate improved the growth of grapevine plants in Cu-contaminated soils. However, growth promotion did not occur in unstressed plants. More studies are necessary for developing a new bioinoculant containing S26 cells aiming to reduce biotic and abiotic stresses in grapevine.

Grapevine is a widely grown fruit crop that is seriously affected by different viruses, reducing grape yield and quality, as well as threatening profitability. Vineyard disease management requires accurate identification of viral infections. This study aimed to survey the presence of ten grapevine viruses in four geographic sites in the Mendoza province of Argentina. Two hundred twenty-three composite cane samples from 1060 plants of six cultivars were collected from 26 blocks distributed across 11 vineyards. The cane samples were screened by RT-PCR for the following viruses: grapevine leafroll-associated viruses 1-4 (GLRaV 1, 2, 3, and 4), grapevine fanleaf virus (GFLV), grapevine fleck virus (GFkV), grapevine virus A (GVA) and B (GVB), grapevine rupestris stem pitting associated virus (GRSPaV), and arabis mosaic virus (ArMV). The results showed an uneven occurrence of viruses through the sampled regions, with GRSPaV being prevalent (71.1%), followed by GFLV (28.9%), GFkV (20.6%), and GLRaV-2 (14.7%). GVB was not detected. This study revealed a moderate prevalence of viruses associated with economically impactful diseases in the vineyards surveyed.

Cryopreservation has the potential for long-term germplasm storage. The metabolic pathways and gene regulation involved in cryopreservation procedures are still not well documented. Hence, the genetic expression profile was evaluated using RNA-Seq in zygotic embryos of grapevines subjected to cryopreservation by vitrification. Sequencing was performed on the Illumina NextSeq 500. The average alignment of reads was 96% against the reference genome. The expression profiles showed 229 genes differentially expressed (186 repressed and 46 induced). The main biological processes showing upregulated enrichment were related to nucleosome assembly, while downregulated processes were related to organ growth. The most highly repressed processes were associated with the organization of the cell wall and membrane components. The unnamed protein product and 17.3 kDa class II heat shock protein (HSP) were highly induced, while ATPase subunit 1 and expansin-A1 were repressed. The response to the cooling and warming process during cryopreservation probably indicates that the changes occurring in transcription may be related to epigenetics. In addition, the cell exhibits an increase in the reserve of nutrients while seeking to survive modestly using available energy and pausing the plant's development. Additionally, energy containment occurred to cope with the stress caused by the treatment where deactivation of components of the cell membrane was observed, possibly due to changes in fluidity caused by alterations in temperature.

Over the past decade, the business of producing juice from grapes (Vitis labrusca L. and hybrids) has been expanding in response to increasing consumption encouraged by campaigns promoting the benefits grape juice can have on health. This study aimed to determine the effect of the production cycle, vine training system, and rootstock on the yield and physical and physical-chemical characteristics of 'BRS Magna' grapes grown in the Vale do Submédio São Francisco in the northeastern region of Brazil. The study was conducted in Petrolina, Pernambuco, over eight production cycles (2017 to 2020). The grapevines were trained in three vine training trellis systems: espalier, lyre, and pergola; and grafted onto two rootstocks: IAC 572 and IAC 766. The production cycle, training system, and rootstocks affected the yield components, vigor, and physical characteristics of the BRS Magna grapes. The combination of the pergola training system and rootstock IAC 766 stood out from the others, providing mean yields estimated at 26 t ha -1 per production cycle. The soluble solids content (SS), titratable acidity (TA), and SS TA -1 ratio were affected neither by the training system nor the rootstock, and higher values for SS and lower values for TA were obtained in the first, second, fourth and eighth production cycles. Thus, the pergola training system and rootstock IAC 766 are recommended for promoting yield gains in the 'BRS Magna' grape in the Vale do Submédio São Francisco.(AU)

The phylloxera Daktulosphaira vitifoliae (Fitch) is considered the main pest in vine crops in the world. One of the alternatives for pest management is the use of resistant rootstocks. In the present study, 14 vine genotypes comprised of 6 canopy cultivars (Bordô, Isabel, BRS Lorena, Cabernet Sauvignon, Magnólia, and Chardonnay), 4 commercial rootstocks (Paulsen 1103, SO4, IAC 766, and IAC 572), and 4 promising rootstocks for pest management (1111-21, 548-44, 548-15, and IBCA-125) were evaluated for resistance to infestation the of root form of pest. For each genotype, the number of eggs, nymphs, and adults present in the roots were evaluated at 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 d after egg infestation. In addition, the feeding place (lignified or nonlignified root), the presence or absence of tuberosities and nodosities, and the total fecundity of females were evaluated. The highest survival rates of nymphs and adults were observed in Cabernet Sauvignon, BRS Lorena, Chardonnay, and IBCA-25 in lignified roots, with the formation of tuberosities characterizing the materials as susceptible. In contrast, SO4, Paulsen 1103, IAC 572, IAC 766, 548-44, 548-15, Magnólia, and 1111-21 provided the least nymph and adult survival over time in nonlignified roots present in the nodosities, characterizing the materials as resistant. In addition, the lowest fecundity was observed in the roots of Magnólia (16 eggs). According to the results, it was verified that the cultivar Magnolia and the selections 548-15 and 1111-21 present reduced infestation and survival of nymphs of D. vitifoliae in the roots. This fact demonstrates the potential of the materials to be used as new resistant rootstocks or sources of insect resistance.

This study aimed to survey the occurrence of eight grapevine viruses in commercial vineyards located in the Calchaquíes Valleys in the northwest region of Argentina. A total of 103 samples of mature canes of vines showing either none or some viral-like symptoms were randomly collected. The samples were tested by RT-PCR/PCR-based assays for the screening of the following viruses: Grapevine fanleaf virus (GFLV), Grapevine leafroll-associated viruses (GLRaV-1, -2, -3, -4), Grapevine virus A (GVA), Grapevine rupestris stem pitting-associated viruses (GRSPaV), and Grapevine red blotch virus (GRBV). Sixty percent of the analyzed samples showed infection with some of the analyzed viruses, except GRBV. GLRaV-3 and GFLV were the most frequent viruses, present in 34% and 21% of the positive samples, respectively. This study represents the first survey report of the presence of grapevine viruses in the region of the Calchaquíes Valleys and contributes to the knowledge to maintain the sanitary status of commercial vineyards in Argentina.

Grapevine (Vitis vinifera) is one of the main fruit crops worldwide. In 2020, the total surface area planted with vines was estimated at 7.3 million hectares. Diverse pathogens affect grapevine yield, fruit, and wine quality of which powdery mildew is the most important disease prior to harvest. Its causal agent is the biotrophic fungus Erysiphe necator, which generates a decrease in cluster weight, delays fruit ripening, and reduces photosynthetic and transpiration rates. In addition, powdery mildew induces metabolic reprogramming in its host, affecting primary metabolism. Most commercial grapevine cultivars are highly susceptible to powdery mildew; consequently, large quantities of fungicide are applied during the productive season. However, pesticides are associated with health problems, negative environmental impacts, and high costs for farmers. In paralleled, consumers are demanding more sustainable practices during food production. Therefore, new grapevine cultivars with genetic resistance to powdery mildew are needed for sustainable viticulture, while maintaining yield, fruit, and wine quality. Two main gene families confer resistance to powdery mildew in the Vitaceae, Run (Resistance to Uncinula necator) and Ren (Resistance to Erysiphe necator). This article reviews the powdery mildew resistance genes and loci and their use in grapevine breeding programs.

Climate is determinant for grapevine geographical distribution, berry attributes, and wine quality. Due to climate change, a 2−4 °C increase in mean diurnal temperature is predicted by the end of the century for the most important Argentine viticulture region. We hypothesize that such temperature increase will affect color intensity and other quality attributes of red grapes and wines. The present study investigated the effect of high temperature (HT) on anthocyanin concentration and composition, pH, and resveratrol and solids content in berries of three major wine-producing varieties during fruit ripening in two seasons. To this end, a structure that increased mean diurnal temperature by 1.5−2.0 °C at berry sites, compared to Control (C) plants grown without such structure, was implemented in field grown vineyards of Malbec, Merlot, and Pinot Noir. Results revealed a cultivar-dependent response to HT conditions, with Malbec and Pinot Noir berries exhibiting significant decreases in total anthocyanin concentration (TAC) at veraison and harvest, respectively, while Merlot maintained an unaffected pigment content under HT. The decrease in TAC was associated with reduced levels of delphinidin, cyanidin, petunidin, peonidin, and malvidin glycosides, and increased ratios of acylated (AA)/non-acylated anthocyanins (NAA), suggesting pigment acylation as a possible stress-response mechanism for attenuating HT negative effects. Under HT, Pinot Noir, which does not produce AA, was the only cultivar with lower TAC at harvest (p < 0.05). pH, resveratrol, and solids content were not affected by HT. Our results predict high, medium, and low plasticity with regard to color quality attributes for Malbec, Merlot, and Pinot Noir, respectively, in the context of climate change.

The crop Vitis vinifera (L.) is of great economic importance as Chile is one of the main wine-producing countries, reaching a vineyard area of 145,000 ha. This vine crop is usually very sensitive to local condition changes and agronomic practices; therefore, strategies to counteract the expected future decrease in water level for agricultural irrigation, temperature increase, extreme water stress (abiotic stress), as well as increase in pathogenic diseases (biotic stress) related to climate change will be of vital importance for this crop. Studies carried out in recent years have suggested that arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can provide key ecosystem services to host plants, such as water uptake implementation and enhanced absorption of nutrients such as P and N, which are key factors for improving the nutritional status of the vine. AMF use in viticulture will contribute also to sustainable agronomic management and bioprotection against pathogens. Here we will present (1) the current status of grapevines in Chile, (2) the main problems in grapevines related to water stress and associated with climate change, (3) the importance of AMF to face water stress and pathogens, and (4) the application of AMF as a biotechnological and sustainable tool in vineyards.

Agronomic breeding practices for grapevines (Vitis vinifera L.) include the application of growth regulators in the field. Brassinosteroids (BRs) are a family of sterol-derived plant hormones that regulate several physiological processes and responses to biotic and abiotic stress. In grapevine berries, the production of biologically active BRs, castasterone and 6-deoxocastasterone, has been reported. In this work, key BR genes were identified, and their expression profiles were determined in grapevine. Bioinformatic homology analyses of the Arabidopsis genome found 14 genes associated with biosynthetic, perception and signaling pathways, suggesting a partial conservation of these pathways between the two species. The tissue- and development-specific expression profiles of these genes were determined by qRT-PCR in nine different grapevine tissues. Using UHPLC-MS/MS, 10 different BR compounds were pinpointed and quantified in 20 different tissues, each presenting specific accumulation patterns. Although, in general, the expression profile of the biosynthesis pathway genes of BRs did not directly correlate with the accumulation of metabolites, this could reflect the complexity of the BR biosynthesis pathway and its regulation. The development of this work thus generates a contribution to our knowledge about the presence, and diversity of BRs in grapevines.

Using tolerant genotypes and the correct use of fertilizers can mitigate the negative effect of elevated Cu levels in the growing medium. In this context, the study aimed to evaluate the effects of excess Cu in the root system and the effectiveness of phosphorus (P) in minimizing the phytotoxicity of Cu in three genotypes: IAC 572 [(Vitis riparia x V. rupestris) x V. caribaea], Magnolia (V. rotundifolia) and Paulsen 1103 (V. berlandieri x V. rupestris). The plants were grown in nutrient solutions and were supplemented with the following treatments: 0.3 µM Cu (Control), 60 µM Cu (Cu) and 60 µM Cu and 62 mg L-1 P (Cu + P). Root samples were sectioned for microscopy analyses, and the shoot lengths, shoot and root dry matter, relative growth rates (RGR) and tissue nutrient contents were also evaluated. The roots of the genotypes that were cultivated with high Cu concentrations produced greater numbers of branches and larger diameters, except for Magnolia genotype that was cultivated in a Cu + P solution, which had an organization similar to the control. Excess Cu caused accumulations of phenolic compounds and decreased shoot lengths, dry matter and RGR in the genotypes. In the treatments with excess Cu, there were increases in this element in the tissues, but P decreased the metal concentrations in Magnolia roots. Therefore, Cu accumulations alter the root system development patterns, growth parameters and tissue nutrient contents in the studied genotypes. Magnolia has a higher tolerance and is also the only genotype for which the use of P has been shown to be effective.
