RESUMO
Monimiaceae comprises approximately 26 genera and 250 species, with a pantropical distribution, predominantly occurring in humid forests. In Brazil, it is represented by five genera and 47 species, most of which are found in the Atlantic Forest, particularly in dense ombrophilous forest. Nevertheless, studies on this family in other biomes and vegetation types in Brazil are still scarce. The Quadrilátero Ferrífero (QF), a region located in the state of Minas Gerais, exhibits high plant species richness and endemism. During collections and analysis of herbarium materials from this region, some specimens of Mollinedia caught our attention due to a combination of characteristics that do not match those of any described species within the genus. For this reason, we describe this new taxon and assess its risk of extinction. Additionally, we review the occurrences of Monimiaceae in the QF and provide maps of its geographical distribution. With the description of this new species, the region now hosts eight species of Monimiaceae, two from the genus Macropeplus and six from Mollinedia. The new species is the first endemic species of the Monimiaceae family to be described in the QF. Concerning the extinction risk assessment, the new species was assessed as critically endangered.
ResumoMonimiaceae abrange c. 26 gêneros e 250 espécies, tem distribuição pantropical e suas espécies ocorrem predominantemente em florestas úmidas. No Brasil está representada por cinco gêneros e 47 espécies, a maior parte das quais com ocorrência na Mata Atlântica, em floresta ombrófila densa. Estudos com a família em outros biomas e vegetações ainda são escassos no Brasil. O Quadrilátero Ferrífero (QF), região localizada no estado de Minas Gerais, possui alta riqueza e endemismo de plantas. Durante coletas e análise de materiais herborizados da região, alguns espécimes de Mollinedia nos chamaram a atenção devido a uma combinação de caracteres que não coincidem com nenhuma espécie descrita para o gênero. Este novo táxon é aqui descrito e tem seu risco de extinção avaliado, além disso, revisamos as ocorrências de Monimiaceae no QF, e fornecemos mapas de distribuição geográfica. Com a descrição desta nova espécie, a região apresenta agora oito espécies de Monimiaceae, duas do gênero Macropeplus e seis de Mollinedia. A nova espécie é a primeira da família endêmica do QF. Em relação à avaliação do risco de extinção, a nova espécie foi categorizada como Criticamente em Perigo.
RESUMO
The diversity and richness of the Brazilian flora are documented in herbarium collections. When areas are deforested, but not documented, we lose both flora and the opportunity to know which species occupied those areas. The south-eastern mesoregion of Mato Grosso State, comprising 22 municipalities, has undergone the loss of native vegetation cover, accelerated by the substantial expansion of agribusiness. For an in-depth look at the consequences and the current state of the flora in that mesoregion, we consulted both speciesLink and JABOT databases. More specifically, we carried out a comprehensive study of herbarium collections by municipality and compiled data including scientific name, collection date, collection locality, collector name and observations made during collection. We obtained 5,861 records of angiosperms, ferns and lycophytes of 160 families, 770 genera and 1,792 species. The specimens are deposited in 80 herbaria of which the Herbarium of Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso (UFMT) hosts the largest collection. Rondonópolis was the most sampled municipality, whereas 50% of the municipalities were poorly sampled and one showed no collection records at all. Amongst the species occurring only in Mato Grosso, eleven were collected only in that mesoregion and twenty species were under some degree of threat. Our study recommends increasing collection and identification efforts to enable effective conservation actions and improve richness estimates for the State of Mato Grosso and the Cerrado, in general, before more of the flora is lost to deforestation.
RESUMO
Abstract: Adiantum is a Pantropical genus of ferns, monophyletic, and has about 225 species. It can be recognized by the indusia with veins, bearing sporangia directly on the underside of its reflexed tissue. About 110 species occur in the Neotropical region and 65 of them are reported to Brazil. Among them, 64 are native species and occur mainly in the Amazon Rainforest, Caatinga, Central Brazilian Savanna, and in the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest. Among the species that occur in Brazil, 16 are endemic and they represent 25% of the total. This paper presents a key to identify the 63 native species of Adiantum in Brazil, excluding the hybrid one. Illustrations of some morphological features, as well as of all species are also presented to help in the process of identification.
Resumo: Adiantum é um gênero Pantropical de samambaias, monofilético e com cerca de 225 espécies. Pode ser reconhecido pelos indúsios com nervuras e esporângios formados diretamente sobre a face inferior do seu tecido reflexo. Aproximadamente 110 espécies ocorrem na região Neotropical e 65 delas são registradas para o Brasil. Entre elas, 64 são espécies nativas e ocorrem principalmente na Floresta Amazônica, Caatinga, nas vegetações abertas do Brasil Central e na Floresta Atlântica Brasileira. Entre a espécies que ocorrem no Brasil, 16 são endêmicas e elas representam 25% do total. Este trabalho apresenta uma chave para identificação das 63 espécies nativas de Adiantum no Brasil, excluindo o híbrido. Também são apresentadas ilustrações de alguns caracteres morfológicos, bem como de todas as espécies para ajudar no processo de identificação.
