This study presents a randomized controlled crossover experiment involving 73 patients with idiopathic bilateral Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). Patients received two combined physiotherapeutic treatments: myofascial mobilization (IASTM) and stretching. Participants were divided into two groups: one started with stretching followed by IASTM, and the other with IASTM followed by stretching. Of these, 43 underwent surgery and began physical therapy 30 days post-operation, while 30 received non-surgical treatment. The therapy sessions lasted four weeks, followed by a crossover of the treatment modalities and periodic reassessments up to six months. The dataset includes experimental design, patient demographics, diagnostic data, objective muscle strength tests, subjective sensitivity tests, clinical indicators, and self-reported measures. This data can be useful for researchers looking to replicate the study or compare outcomes between clinical and surgical CTS patients.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence suggests that individuals with chronic non-specific neck pain may experience altered sensory processing, potentially contributing to the modest response to therapeutic exercise treatments. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aims to explore the effect of therapeutic exercise on pain processing among patients with chronic non-specific neck pain. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in multiple databases (PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, PEDro, SportDiscus, and Cochrane CENTRAL) from inception to June 2023. Inclusion criteria included randomized controlled trials (RCT) comparing therapeutic exercise to non-exercise treatments or no treatment. The screening and data extraction was conducted by two reviewers. The methodological quality was evaluated using the PEDro scale and the certainty of evidence using GRADE. The primary outcomes assessed were pressure pain threshold (PPT), temporal summation, and conditioned pain modulation. RESULTS: Thirteen trials included a total of 948 participants, with 586 in the exercise therapy group and 362 in the non-exercise group. The therapeutic exercise was not superior to non-exercise treatments for both local and PPT in the immediate (MD = 0.13, 95%CI = -0.18 to 0.43), and short-term follow-up (MD = 0.17, 95%CI = -0.27 to 0.61). In the medium term, therapeutic exercise demonstrated a small effect size in increasing local PPT (Kg/cm2) (MD = 0.64, 95%CI = 0.08 to 1.19) compared to non-exercise interventions. The certainty of evidence for these outcomes was very low. CONCLUSIONS: There is very low certainty of evidence that therapeutic exercise is not superior than non-exercise treatment on pain processing in patients with chronic non-specific neck pain.

Low back pain is a highly disabling health condition that generates high costs for patients and healthcare systems. For this reason, it is considered a serious public health problem worldwide. This pilot study aimed to assess the feasibility of a future randomized controlled trial (RCT) by evaluating adherence to treatment, contamination between groups, satisfaction with treatment, and understanding of the exercise instructions provided by the physiotherapist. Additionally, we sought to identify and implement necessary modifications to the exercise protocol for better suitability in older people. We conducted a prospective, registered pilot RCT comparing an 8-week group-based exercise program with a waiting list in older people (≥60 years old) with chronic low back pain. Sixty participants were recruited through social media, pamphlets, and invitations at community referral centers. The study demonstrated the feasibility of a full RCT. Participants reported high satisfaction with the treatment (i.e., 100% indicated willingness to return for future services) and a high understanding of the exercise instructions (i.e., 81.8% reported "very easy" comprehension). Adherence to the exercise program exceeded the average reported for group exercise interventions in older adults (i.e., 82.58%). Dropout was associated solely with preexisting physical activity levels. The exercise protocol was successfully adapted to better suit the needs of the older adult population. This pilot RCT demonstrates the feasibility of a full-scale RCT to evaluate the effectiveness of group exercise in improving pain intensity and disability in older adults with chronic low back pain. The implemented adjustments to the exercise protocol and overall study approach strengthen the methodological foundation and expected accuracy of the future RCT.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have shown that pulmonary telerehabilitation (PTR) improves respiratory capacity. However, there is little evidence of its effectiveness in youth with post-COVID-19 conditions (PCC). This study analyzed the effects of a PTR program on young adults with PCC. METHODS: Sixteen youths were randomly assigned to a control group (CG) or an experimental group (EG), with eight participants each. The EG participated in a PTR program that included twelve remote, asynchronous four-week sessions with diaphragmatic breathing and aerobic exercises. Vital signs (SpO2, HR, RR, BP), physical capacity (sit-to-stand test), cardiorespiratory capacity (6-Minute Walk Test), and perceived exertion (Borg scale) were assessed in both groups. RESULTS: Statistical analyses showed a significant decrease in RR and HR (p < 0.012) and an increase in SpO2 (p < 0.042), physical (p < 0.012), and respiratory (p < 0.028) capacity. Perceived effort decreased significantly in both groups (CG: p < 0.006; EG: p < 0.001) only for physical but not for cardiorespiratory capacity (p < 0.106). There were no statistical changes registered in BP (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The PTR program, which includes respiratory and aerobic exercises, is feasible and effective in improving physical and cardiorespiratory capacity in young people with PCC, as well as reducing HR, RR, and dyspnea.

El proceso de envejecimiento está marcado por el sedentarismo y la escasa actividad física, lo que se asocia a la disminución rápida y continua de las capacidades funcionales, la dependencia y la fragilidad. El objetivo del trabajo se orienta a valorar, mediante el test de repeticiones máximas con pesos no extremos, el efecto de la aplicación de ejercicios con pesas para la atención de la sarcopenia. Se aplicaron métodos de los niveles teóricos y empíricos como el analítico, sintético, inductivo, deductivo, revisión documental, análisis documental, observación, encuesta y entrevista. Se aplicó, como instrumento de trabajo, una batería de ejercicios físicos de resistencia a la fuerza, y aeróbicos que permitieron utilizar el método de medición en siete adultos mayores con sarcopenia, atendidos en el Centro de Actividad Física y Salud de la Universidad de las Ciencias de la Cultura Física y Deportes ¨ Manuel Fajardo. Se evaluó el trabajo de fuerza muscular mediante el test mencionado, lo que permitió identificar el peso real de la carga física con la que deben entrenar y, sobre esa base, se elaboró la batería de ejercicios con pesas. En los resultados preliminares registrados, mediante la aplicación del test, se constató que la integración del trabajo con pesas y el aeróbico influyen de manera favorable en la ganancia de fuerza en el adulto mayor.
O processo de envelhecimento é marcado por um estilo de vida sedentário e pouca atividade física, o que está associado ao declínio rápido e contínuo das capacidades funcionais, à dependência e à fragilidade. O objetivo do trabalho visa avaliar, por meio do teste de repetições máximas com pesos não extremos, o efeito da aplicação de exercícios com carga no tratamento da sarcopenia. Foram aplicados métodos dos níveis teórico e empírico como analítico, sintético, indutivo, dedutivo, revisão documental, análise documental, observação, levantamento e entrevista. Como instrumento de trabalho foi aplicada uma bateria de exercícios físicos resistidos de força e aeróbios que permitiu a utilização do método de mensuração em sete idosos com sarcopenia atendidos no Centro de Atividade Física e Saúde da Universidade de Ciências da Cultura Física e. Desporto ¨ Manuel Fajardo. O trabalho de força muscular foi avaliado por meio do referido teste, que possibilitou identificar o real peso da carga física com a qual devem treinar e, com base nisso, foi desenvolvida a bateria de exercícios com pesos. Nos resultados preliminares registrados, por meio da aplicação do teste, foi confirmado que a integração do trabalho com pesos e do trabalho aeróbio influencia favoravelmente o ganho de força em idosos.
The aging process is marked by a sedentary lifestyle and little physical activity, which is associated with the rapid and continuous decline in functional capacities, dependency and fragility. The objective of the work is aimed at assessing, through the test of maximum repetitions with non-extreme weights, the effect of the application of exercises with weights for the care of sarcopenia. Methods from the theoretical and empirical levels such as synthetic analytical, inductive-deductive, documentary review, documentary analysis, observation, survey and interview were applied. As a working instrument, a set of strength endurance and aerobic physical exercises was applied that allowed the measurement method to be used in seven older adults with sarcopenia, treated at the Center for Physical Activity and Health of the University of Sciences. of Physical Culture and Sports ¨Manuel Fajardo¨. The muscular strength work was evaluated using the aforementioned test, which made it possible to identify the real weight of the physical load with which they must train and, on that basis, the set of exercises with weights was developed. In the preliminary results recorded, through the application of the test, it was confirmed that the integration of weight work and aerobic work favorably influences strength gain in the older adults.

El presente estudio investigativo abordó el tema de la inclusión de las gestantes adolescentes en las clases de Educación Física, enfocado al mejoramiento de la salud física y el bienestar de la madre y el feto durante el embarazo. El objetivo principal del trabajo fue proponer un programa de actividades físicas adaptadas para la inclusión de estudiantes en estado de gestación en la clase de Educación Física, en la Unidad educativa fiscal "Pichincha". Se planteó una metodología con enfoque cualitativo, se utilizaron como métodos empíricos la observación científica, la entrevista, la encuesta y la revisión documental que facilitaron la identificación del problema en la parte inicial hasta la realización de la propuesta de ejercicios físicos adaptados, en su etapa final. Se concluye con la aplicación y ejecución de actividades físicas adaptadas, y se obtienen mejoras en la salud cardiovascular, el fortalecimiento de los músculos y las articulaciones, el control del aumento de peso, la reducción del riesgo de complicaciones del embarazo y la mejora del bienestar emocional. Estos resultados fueron comparados con investigaciones de otros autores que corroboran que implementar actividades físicas adaptadas contribuye al mejoramiento de la salud, tanto de la madre como del feto.
A presente pesquisa abordou a questão da inclusão de adolescentes grávidas nas aulas de Educação Física, com foco na melhoria da saúde física e do bem-estar da mãe e do feto durante a gravidez. O objetivo principal do trabalho foi propor um programa de atividades físicas adaptado para a inclusão de estudantes grávidas na aula de Educação Física, na unidade educacional fiscal "Pichincha". Foi proposta uma metodologia com abordagem qualitativa, foram utilizados observação científica, entrevista, levantamento e revisão documental como métodos empíricos que facilitaram a identificação do problema na parte inicial até a realização da proposta de exercícios físicos adaptados, em sua etapa final. . Conclui com a aplicação e execução de atividades físicas adaptadas, obtendo-se melhorias na saúde cardiovascular, fortalecimento de músculos e articulações, controle do ganho de peso, redução do risco de complicações na gravidez e melhora do bem-estar emocional. Esses resultados foram comparados com pesquisas de outros autores que corroboram que a implementação de atividades físicas adaptadas contribui para melhorar a saúde da mãe e do feto.
The present research study addressed the issue of the inclusion of pregnant adolescents in Physical Education classes, focused on improving the physical health and well-being of the mother and fetus during pregnancy. The main objective of the work was to propose a program of physical activities adapted for the inclusion of pregnant students in the Physical Education class, in the "Pichincha" Fiscal Educational Unit. A methodology with a qualitative approach was proposed, scientific observation, interview, survey and documentary review were used as empirical methods that facilitated the identification of the problem in the initial part until the proposal of adapted physical exercises was carried out, in its final stage. It concludes with the application and execution of adapted physical activities, and improvements are obtained in cardiovascular health, strengthening of muscles and joints, control of weight gain, reduction of the risk of pregnancy complications and improvement of well-being. emotional. These results were compared with research by other authors that corroborate that implementing adapted physical activities contributes to improving the health of both the mother and the fetus.

CONTEXT: The quadriceps femoris is consistently ranked among the muscles most prone to sustain strain injuries in sports involving kicking and sprinting actions. Given the documented preventive effect of Nordic hamstring curl programs against hamstring strain injuries, incorporating exercises that induce eccentric overload on the quadriceps could potentially help mitigate strain injuries within this muscle group. The Reverse Nordic Curl (RNC) has emerged as a viable field-based exercise for eccentrically working the quadriceps. This study aimed to compare quadriceps muscle eccentric activation during the RNC with 3 bodyweight squat-based exercises: single-leg squat (SLS), Bulgarian squat, and forward lunge. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: Twenty-three healthy volunteers (15 men) were monitored for rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, and vastus medialis electromyographic signal, as well as knee range of motion, while performing 10 repetitions of each exercise. Electromyography data acquired during eccentric phases were normalized by maximum voluntary isometric contraction of the knee extensors. The exercises were compared based on the electromyography and knee range of motion values. RESULTS: RNC generated a similar rectus femoris and vastus medialis eccentric activation compared with the squat-based exercises (P > .05 for all), and a lower vastus lateralis activation than SLS (P < .001). Among the bodyweight squat-based exercises, SLS generated greater eccentric activation than forward lunge and Bulgarian squat for the 3 muscles (P < .05 for all). RNC was performed with lower knee-flexion range of motion than bodyweight squat-based exercises (P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: RNC did not produce superior eccentric quadriceps activation compared to bodyweight squat-based exercises, even proving to be less demanding for the vastus lateralis compared to the SLS. These findings may assist practitioners in selecting exercises to elicit quadriceps eccentric stimulus, with a focus on preventing strain injuries.

Objectives: To present a simple form of vocal and breathing conditioning for voice professionals based on concepts from vocal science. The vocal conditioning program called Voice Athletes Conditioning uses the principles of exercise physiology to gradually improve vocal and respiratory overload to achieve endurance, power, and flexibility. Methods: Due to our personal experience with high voice users, we synthesized a vocal conditioning program (AVCP) that combines voice science, exercise physiology, sports science and physical therapy principles. This is an 8-week program of daily vocal and breathing exercises with overload enhancement each week using different types of breathing devices and semi-occluded vocal tract exercises, designed and developed according to the specific requirements and performance of the voice professional. Reflections: Professional voice users often experience episodes of vocal fatigue that can directly affect their performance and vocal health. As with physical training for athletes, voice exercises can also contribute to improving vocal conditioning, preventing voice disorders, as well as helping to obtain better performance, greater tolerance to fatigue and shorter recovery time. Conclusions: AVCP is an approach that considers the principles of muscle training aimed objectively at the respiratory and vocal muscles, carried out with a variety of breathing devices and specific vocal exercises in search of greater performance time, less physiological stress, and shorter recovery time in the professional use of the voice.
Objetivos: Presentar una forma sencilla de acondicionamiento vocal y respiratorio para profesionales de la voz, basada en conceptos de la ciencia vocal. El programa de acondicionamiento vocal denominado Voice Athletes Conditioning utiliza los principios de la fisiología del ejercicio para mejorar gradualmente la sobrecarga vocal y respiratoria, con el fin de lograr resistencia, potencia y flexibilidad. Métodos: Debido a nuestra experiencia personal con usuarios de voz aguda, sintetizamos un programa de acondicionamiento vocal (AVCP) que combina principios de la ciencia de la voz, la fisiología del ejercicio, las ciencias del deporte y la fisioterapia. Se trata de un programa de 8 semanas de ejercicios vocales y respiratorios diarios con realce de sobrecarga cada semana utilizando diferentes tipos de dispositivos respiratorios y ejercicios semioclusivos del tracto vocal, diseñado y desarrollado de acuerdo con los requerimientos específicos y el rendimiento del profesional de la voz. Reflexiones: Los usuarios profesionales de la voz experimentan a menudo episodios de fatiga vocal que pueden afectar directamente su rendimiento y salud vocal. Al igual que ocurre con el entrenamiento físico de los deportistas, los ejercicios vocales también pueden contribuir a mejorar el acondicionamiento vocal, prevenir trastornos de la voz, además de ayudar a obtener un mejor rendimiento, una mayor tolerancia a la fatiga y un menor tiempo de recuperación. Conclusiones: El AVCP es un enfoque que considera los principios del entrenamiento muscular dirigido objetivamente a la musculatura respiratoria y vocal, realizado con diversos aparatos respiratorios y ejercicios vocales específicos en busca de un mayor tiempo de actuación, menor estrés fisiológico y menor tiempo de recuperación en el uso profesional de la voz.

Introducción: El método de calistenia gimnástica se configura como una modalidad de ejercicios específicos que involucra la adopción de posturas artificiales a través de movimientos particulares. Estos movimientos están diseñados para producir efectos higiénicos y educativos claramente definidos. Esta modalidad de ejercicio guarda notables similitudes con el modus operandi de los vocalise en la pedagogía vocal. Objetivo: El objetivo de este trabajo es investigar las relaciones potenciales entre los principios técnico-científicos que guían el sistema de calistenia gimnástica y los principios técnico-pedagógicos que rigen los ejercicios vocales realizados por cantantes durante su proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje. Asimismo, se busca explorar las conexiones entre los objetivos y propósitos del sistema de calistenia gimnástica y los de los ejercicios vocales en dicho proceso. Método: Para abordar este objetivo, se llevó a cabo una investigación bibliográfica que implicó el análisis detallado de fuentes pertinentes. Se examinaron publicaciones académicas y literatura especializada relacionada con la calistenia gimnástica y la pedagogía vocal. Reflexión: La calistenia gimnástica y los ejercicios vocales comparten una estructura fundamental de ejercicios específicos que implican posturas artificiales y movimientos específicos. Ambos buscan un refinamiento en la higienización y educación, permitiendo a los individuos, ya sea en el ámbito físico o vocal, desarrollarse de manera adecuada y saludable. Conclusión: A partir de la investigación bibliográfica, se concluye que los ejercicios vocales en el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje de los cantantes pueden considerarse una suerte de calistenia vocal. Esta conclusión se fundamenta en las relaciones intrínsecas observadas entre los principios y objetivos del sistema de calistenia gimnástica y el modus operandi de los ejercicios vocales. Esta reflexión aporta perspectivas valiosas a la pedagogía vocal, con el fin de ofrecer una comprensión más específicamente fisiológica y biomecánica de los ejercicios vocales, orientando mejor la aplicación de las vocalizaciones en el proceso de educación y entrenamiento vocal.
Introduction: The gymnastic calisthenics method is configured as a specific form of exercises involving the adoption of artificial postures through specific movements. These movements are designed to produce clearly defined hygienic and educational effects. This mode of exercise bears notable similarities to the modus operandi of vocalises in vocal pedagogy. Objective: The objective of this work is to investigate the potential relationships between the technical-scientific principles that guide the gymnastic calisthenics system and the technical-pedagogical principles governing vocal exercises practiced by singers during their teaching and learning process. Additionally, it aims to explore the connections between the objectives and purposes of the gymnastic calisthenics system and those of vocal exercises in this process. Method: To address this objective, a bibliographic research was conducted, involving a detailed analysis of relevant sources. Academic publications and specialized literature related to gymnastic calisthenics and vocal pedagogy were examined. Reflection: Gymnastic calisthenics and vocal exercises share a fundamental structure of specific exercises involving artificial postures and specific movements. Both seek refinement in hygiene and education, enabling individuals, either in the physical or vocal realm, to develop appropriately and healthily. Conclusion: Based on the bibliographic research, it is concluded that vocal exercises in the teaching and learning process of singers can be considered a form of vocal calisthenics. This conclusion is based on the intrinsic relationships observed between the principles and objectives of the gymnastic calisthenics system and the modus operandi of vocal exercises. This reflection provides valuable insights into vocal pedagogy, aiming to offer a more specifically physiological and biomechanical understanding of vocal exercises. This effectively guides the application of vocalizations in the process of vocal education and training.

Introduction: The gestational period brings anatomical and physiological changes to women in several systems, especially the respiratory system. Objective: To determine whether there is an association between gestational age (GA), Diabetes, uterine fundal height (UFH), Body Mass Index (BMI), level of dyspnea, and physical activity with maximum respiratory and nasal pressures. Methods: Cross-sectional study that included 55 high-risk pregnant women in the 2nd and 3rd trimester of pregnancy at the Obstetrics Outpatient Clinic of the Hospital das Clínicas in Recife PE, Brazil, personal, sociodemographic, anthropometric, clinical and Maximal Inspiratory Pressure (MIP) data were described and nasal inspiratory pressure (NIP), that, using regression and multivariate analysis, analyzed the influence of risk factors for high-risk pregnancy with NIP considering a p<0.005. Results: Among the pregnant women, according to the clinical variables, it was observed that 56.4% (n=31) had a gestational age above 28 weeks, 27.3% (n=15) diabetes, 25.5% (n=14) asthma, 43.6% (n=24) Gestational Hypertension, 56.4% (n=31) obesity, 85.5% (n=47) complaints of dyspnea 38.1% (n=21) mild to severe dyspnea and 65.5% (n=36) vigorous physical activity. Low MIP (76.76 cmH2O) and NIP (68.62 cmH2O) values were found for age. An association was observed between an increase in UFH and a decrease of 0.8 cmH2O in NIP, regardless of gestational age. Conclusion: High-risk pregnant women in the second and third trimester of pregnancy have decreased NIP and MIP with a negative association of UFH with NIP regardless of gestational age.
Introdução: O período gestacional traz para a mulher alterações anatômicas e fisiológicas, em diversos sistemas, principalmente no sistema respiratório. Objetivo: Determinar se há associação da idade gestacional (IG), Diabetes, altura de fundo de útero (AFU), Índice de Massa Corpórea (IMC), nível de dispneia e atividade física com as pressões respiratória máxima e nasal. Método: Estudo transversal que incluiu 55 gestantes de alto risco no 2º e 3º trimestre de gestação do Ambulatório de Obstetrícia do Hospital das Clínicas de Recife PE, foi descrito os dados pessoais, sociodemográficos, antropométricos, clínicos e das Pressão Inspiratória Máxima (PImáx) e pressão inspiratória nasal (PIN), que, por meio da regressão e da análise multivariada analisou a influência dos fatores de risco para gestação de alto risco com a PIN considerando um p<0,005. Resultados: Dentre as gestantes, segundo as variáveis clínicas, observou-se que 56,4% (n=31) apresentaram idade gestacional acima de 28 semanas, 27,3% (n=15) diabetes, 25,5% (n=14) asma, 43,6% (n=24) Hipertensão Arterial Sistêmica Gestacional (HASG), 56,4% (n=31) obesidade, 85,5% (n=47) queixas de dispneia 38,1% (n=21) dispneia de um pouco forte a forte e 65,5% (n=36) atividade física vigorosa. Foram encontrados valores baixos de PImáx (76,76 cmH2O) e PIN (68,62 cmH2O) para a idade. Foi observada uma associação do aumento da AFU com a diminuição de 0,8 cmH2O da PIN, independentemente da idade gestacional. Conclusão: As gestantes de alto risco no segundo e terceiro trimestre gestacional apresentam PIN e PImáx diminuídas com uma associação negativa da AFU com a PIN independentemente da idade gestacional.

INTRODUCTION: Although resistance training is frequently prescribed for people with haemophilia (PWH), no previous meta-analyses have quantified the effect of this intervention on muscle strength, nor the implications of the intervention's modality and duration. AIM: (1) To determine the effects of resistance training on muscle strength in adults with haemophilia; (2) To determine the most effective duration and modality among the exercise protocols. METHODS: A systematic search from inception until 28 November 2023 was conducted in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, CENTRAL and CINAHL databases. We included randomised controlled trials or before-after studies that involved resistance training without other physiotherapy co-interventions. Study selection, data extraction and risk of bias assessment were independently performed by two reviewers. Disagreements were resolved in consultation with a third author. The level of evidence was determined according to the GRADE methodology. RESULTS: Seven studies were included. Measurements of knee extensor strength and elbow extensor strength were included in the meta-analysis. Subgroup analysis showed significant effects for both elastic resistance protocols (SMD: 0.54; 95% CI: 0.02-1.07) and conventional training (isometric and weight-based equipment) (SMD: 0.88; 95% CI: 0.50-1.25), demonstrating small and moderate effect sizes respectively. Additionally, both protocols of duration 5-7 weeks (SMD: 1.16, 95% CI: 0.63-1.69) as well as those of duration ≥8 weeks (SMD: 0.57, 95% CI: 0.20-0.94) showed a significant difference. CONCLUSION: Resistance training is effective in improving muscle strength of the knee and elbow extensors in PWH. Both elastic resistance and conventional training show benefits.

BACKGROUND: People with Parkinson's disease (PD) have impaired upper limb motor coordination, limiting the execution of activities of daily living. This study investigated the feasibility and safety of a short-term Pilates-based exercise program in the treatment of upper limb motor coordination for people with PD. METHODS: Fifteen patients - n (%) 4 women/11 men (27/73), median [interquartile range] age 66 [9] years - participated in this quasi-experimental (before-and-after) clinical trial. Patients underwent a 6-week (30 min/day, 3 days/week) Pilates exercise program using Reformer, Cadillac, Chair, and Barrel equipment. Feasibility was evaluated by adherence to the program and the ability to perform the exercises including progressions on difficulty. Safety was evaluated based on self-reported adverse events. Clinical and functional trends before and after the intervention were also computed regarding handgrip strength (HGS), fine motor coordination (9 Hole Peg Test; 9HPT), bradykinesia (Movement Disorder Society - Unified Parkinson's disease Rating Scale; MDS-UPDRS), and upper limb functionality (Test D'évaluation des Membres Supérieurs des Personnes Âgées, TEMPA). RESULTS: Of the 18 Pilates sessions, exercise adherence was 100%. The only adverse event observed was mild muscle pain. Pre-post differences were observed only for body bradykinesia and hypokinesia (1.0 [0.0] vs. 0.0 [1.0] s, adjusted p = 0.048). CONCLUSIONS: A short-term Pilates-based exercise program in the treatment of upper limb muscle strength, manual dexterity, bradykinesia, and functionality is feasible and safe for people with PD. Changes in upper limb bradykinesia encourage randomized clinical trials.

The combination of strength and aerobic training (concurrent training - TG) has been a widely used intervention for improving health outcomes. Also, dance has been well described as a great aerobic activity and can be an interesting option to compose an alternative multicomponent training pro-gram. Therefore, the aim of the present protocol study is to describe the methods that will be used in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) design to identify and compare the impacts of traditional TG composed by strength and aerobic training and a multicomponent training consisting of strength training combined with dance classes (DG) on functional and cognitive capacity and quality of life of older people. The sample of RCT will consist of men and women aged between 60 and 75 years. Both interventions will occur twice a week for 12 weeks with progressive intensity and volume. Functional capacity will be assessed by gait, balance, sitting and standing and climbing tests. Strength will be assessed through one repetition maximum test (1RM) in knee extension exercise, and handgrip using a hand dynamometer. Muscle thickness will be assessed using quadriceps ultrasound. Muscle power will be assessed in the knee extension exercise at 30 and 70% of 1RM using an encoder. Aerobic capacity will be assessed using the 6-minute walk test. Quality of life and cognitive performance will be assessed by questionnaires. Comparisons between groups over time will be carried out using Generalized Estimating Equations with a significance level of p<0.01. This protocol follows the rec-ommendations of SPIRIT-2013.
A combinação de treinamento de força e aeróbico (treinamento combinado - TC) tem sido uma interven-ção amplamente utilizada para melhorar desfechos de saúde. Além disso, a dança tem sido bem descrita na literatura como uma ótima atividade aeróbica e pode ser uma opção interessante para compor um programa alternativo de treinamento multicomponente. Portanto, o objetivo do presente protocolo de estudo é descrever os métodos que serão utilizados em um ensaio clínico randomizado (ECR) que visa identificar e comparar os impactos do TC tradicional composto por treinamento de força e aeróbico e de um treinamento multi-componente composto por treinamento de força combinado com aulas de dança sobre capacidade funcional, cognitiva e qualidade de vida de idosos. A amostra do ECR será composta por homens e mulheres com idade entre 60 e 75 anos. Ambas as intervenções ocorrerão duas vezes por semana durante 12 semanas com intensidade e volume progressivos. A capacidade funcional será avaliada por meio de testes de marcha, equilíbrio, sentar e levantar e subir escadas. A força será avaliada por meio do teste de uma repetição máxima (1RM) no exercício de extensão de joelhos e por meio do teste de preensão palmar com o dinamômetro manual. A espessura muscular será avaliada por meio de ultrassonografia do quadríceps. A potência muscular será ava-liada no exercício de extensão de joelhos a 30 e 70% de 1RM por meio de um transdutor linear de posição. A capacidade aeróbica será avaliada por meio do teste de caminhada de 6 minutos. A qualidade de vida e o desempenho cognitivo serão avaliados por meio de questionários. As comparações entre os grupos ao longo do tempo serão realizadas por meio de Equações de Estimativas Generalizadas com nível de significância p<0,01. Este protocolo segue as recomendações do SPIRIT-2013.

Overweight, obesity, and low physical fitness (PF) are conditions associated with physical and mental health problems in children and adolescents. Schools and physical education (PE) classes provide ideal environments for promoting physical exercise, improving levels of PF, and preventing obesity in this population. This article outlines the protocol of an experimental study whose primary objective is to assess the effects of a 15-minute physical exercise program implemented during elementary school physical education classes on PF and anthropometric markers of overweight and obesity (AMOO). Enrolled students in 6th to 9th-grade classes within rural elementary schools located in a Southern city in Brazil will participate of the study. The participants will be randomized into the intervention group and control group. The intervention will last for 12 weeks with two sessions per week. Various components of PF and AMOO will be the primary dependent variables. Physical activity level, rec-reational screen time, sleep duration, physical self-concept, motivation for participating in PE classes, symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress will be secondary dependent variables. Sociodemographic information and somatic maturation will serve as covariates. All variables will be measured pre and post-intervention. The study's findings will contribute to a better understanding of the potential of school PE classes to improve PF, AMOO, and, secondarily, health-related behaviors, motivation for participating in PE classes, and the mental health of students
O sobrepeso, a obesidade e a baixa aptidão física (ApF) são condições associadas à problemas de saúde física e mental em crianças e adolescentes. A escola e as aulas de educação física (EF) são ambientes propícios para a promoção do exercício físico e a melhoria dos níveis de ApF e prevenção de obesidade nesta população. Este artigo descreve o protocolo de um estudo experimental que tem como objetivo primário identificar os efeitos de um programa de 15 minutos de exercícios físicos realizados durante as aulas de EF na ApF e em indicadores antropométricos de sobrepeso e obesidade (IASO) de escolares. Participarão do estudo escolares do 6° ao 9° ano de ambos os sexos de escolas da zona rural de uma cidade do sul do Brasil. Os participantes serão randomizados em grupo intervenção e grupo controle. A intervenção terá duração de 12 semanas com duas sessões semanais. Diferentes componentes da ApF e IASO serão variáveis dependentes primárias. O nível de atividade física, tempo recreativo de tela, tempo de sono, autoconceito físico, motivação para a participação nas aulas de EF, sintomas de ansiedade, depressão e estresse serão variáveis dependentes secundárias. Informações sociodemográficas e maturação somática serão covariáveis. Todas variáveis serão medidas pré e pós intervenção. O resultado do estudo contribuirá para a melhor compreensão do potencial das aulas de EF escolar para a melhoria da APF, de IASO e, de forma secundária, em comportamentos relacionados à saúde, na motivação para participação nas aulas de EF e na saúde mental de estudantes.

Na pandemia de COVID-19, tanto o isolamento quanto o fechamento temporário das academias impactaram no cotidiano das pessoas, incluindo na prática de atividade física (AF). Essa é essencial para a saúde, por isso, devemos incentivá-la. Estudantes de Medicina com tempo escasso e falta de estímulo curricular para AF, tendem a subestimar sua importância. O seguinte relato busca descrever vivências e impactos da disciplina "Atividade Física na Promoção da Saúde" em uma instituição de ensino superior no ensino remoto, sua relação com enfermidades e discussões sobre políticas de saúde. Foi perceptível impacto positivo para estudantes e familiares. A adesão dos pacientes à AF está relacionada ao estímulo despertado pelo profissional pelas linhas terapêuticas voltadas ao estilo de vida. Assim, sendo o currículo das escolas médicas inestimável, deve-se valorizar os efeitos da AF para os indivíduos. A disciplina foi um bom exemplo da importância e êxito resultante da conscientização do futuro médico ainda em graduação.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, both the lockdown and the temporary closure of gyms had an impact on people's daily lives, including the practice of physical activity (PA). This is essential for good health, so we should encourage it. Medical students, with limited time and a lack of curricular encouragement for PA, tend to underestimate its importance. The following report seeks to describe the experiences and impact of the subject 'Physical Activity in Health Promotion' at a higher educa-tion institution in remote teaching, its relationship with illnesses and discussions on health policies. A positive impact on students and their families was clearly noted in class. Patients' adherence to PA is related to the stimulus provided by the professional through lifestyle-oriented therapeutic lines. Therefore, since medical schools' curricula is invaluable, the effects of PA on individuals should be valued. The subject was a good example of the importance and success of raising awareness among future doctors while they are still undergraduates.

BACKGROUND: Hemodialysis (HD) per se is a risk factor for thrombosis. Considering the growing body of evidence on blood-flow restriction (BFR) exercise in HD patients, identification of possible risk factors related to the prothrombotic agent D-dimer is required for the safety and feasibility of this training model. The aim of the present study was to identify risk factors associated with higher D-dimer levels and to determine the acute effect of resistance exercise (RE) with BFR on this molecule. METHODS: Two hundred and six HD patients volunteered for this study (all with a glomerular filtration rate of <15 mL/min/1.73 m2). The REâ¯+â¯BFR session consisted of 50% arterial occlusion pressure during 50 min sessions of HD (intradialytic exercise). RE repetitions included concentric and eccentric lifting phases (each lasting 2 s) and were supervised by a strength and conditioning specialist. RESULTS: Several variables were associated with elevated levels of D-dimer, including higher blood glucose, citrate use, recent cardiovascular events, recent intercurrents, higher inflammatory status, catheter as vascular access, older patients (>70 years old), and HD vintage. Furthermore, REâ¯+â¯BFR significantly increases D-dimer after 4 h. Patients with borderline baseline D-dimer levels (400-490 ng/mL) displayed increased risk of elevating D-dimer over the normal range (≥500 ng/mL). CONCLUSION: These results identified factors associated with a heightened prothrombotic state and may assist in the screening process for HD patients who wish to undergo REâ¯+â¯BFR. D-dimer and/or other fibrinolysis factors should be assessed at baseline and throughout the protocol as a precautionary measure to maximize safety during REâ¯+â¯BFR.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the acute effects of the sequence order of drop jumps (DJ) and dynamic stretching (DS) on sprinting performances in competitive athletes and to investigate the relationships between post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE) in sprint performance and lower limb power. Thirteen male jumpers and sprinters participated in this study (19 ± 2 years; 177 ± 7 cm; 71.7 ± 5.6 kg). Through a randomized crossover design, the athletes were exposed to three different conditions after a standardized warm-up: DS+DJ, DJ+DS, and control. Sprinting performance over 40 m was analysed with consideration of initial (0 to 20 m) and final acceleration (20 to 40 m) phases. The effect of intervention was examined by two-way repeated-measures of ANOVA. Pearson's correlation test was used to determine the association between PAPE during sprinting and jump performance. There was no effect of any factor on 40-m sprint performance. Meanwhile, the performance at 20-40 m was higher after the DS+DJ condition when compared to baseline (8.79 ± 0.43 vs. 8.91 ± 0.35 m/s; p = 0.015). However, the initial acceleration was worsened in the DJ+DS condition when compared to baseline (6.26 ± 0.25 vs. 6.22 ± 0.26 m/s; p = 0.002). There was a negative correlation between CMJ height and the improvement in final acceleration (r = -0.741; p = 0.004). The use of DS prior to DJ is an effective strategy to improve performance in the final acceleration phase (20-40 m). The athletes with lower levels of lower limb power benefited the most from this PAPE strategy.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate a short educational intervention that focused on labor pain (through visual analogue scale, VAS), postpartum anxiety, and birthing experience before and during the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic. METHODS: This was a quasi-experimental study conducted between November 2019 and May 2021 in Brazil in 100 women with a high-risk pregnancy in the third trimester of pregnancy with an intervention group with in-person or virtual sessions (during the COVID-19 pandemic) and a non-intervention group. The antenatal intervention included breathing and relaxation techniques, upright positions, and information about labor. For evaluation, an antenatal questionnaire, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and a postpartum questionnaire were used. For data analysis, Student's t-test, chi-squared and Fisher's exact tests, ANOVA, bivariate, and multivariate regression analysis, were used. RESULTS: When comparing the women in the intervention group to the non-intervention group, it was observed that the latter group reported higher fear of pain at labor during antenatal consultations (p<0.013); more women needed analgesia at 0-4 cm dilation (17/40) (p<0.018); the duration of labor was ≥12 hours (37/50) (p<0.037); while the intervention reported having a regular, good or excellent labor period (36/50) (p=0.014). The multiple regression analysis for labor pain showed a significant relationship between mode of delivery (cesarean delivery: RR; SE -21.43; 5.32, p<0.001) and labor pain, and good satisfaction with labor (RR; SE -13.86; 6.40, p=0.033). CONCLUSIONS: Women from the intervention group had more satisfaction and less pain during labor than women from the non-intervention group.

QUESTIONS: What is the effect of preoperative respiratory muscle training (RMT) on the incidence of postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) after open cardiac surgery? What is the effect of RMT on the duration of mechanical ventilation, postoperative length of stay and respiratory muscle strength? DESIGN: Systematic review of randomised trials with meta-analysis. PARTICIPANTS: Adults undergoing elective open cardiac surgery. INTERVENTION: The experimental groups received preoperative RMT and the comparison groups received no intervention. OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcomes were PPCs, length of hospital stay, respiratory muscle strength, oxygenation and duration of mechanical ventilation. The methodological quality of studies was assessed using the PEDro scale and the overall certainty of the evidence was assessed using the GRADE approach. RESULTS: Eight trials involving 696 participants were included. Compared with the control group, the respiratory training group had fewer PPCs (RR 0.51, 95% CI 0.38 to 0.70), less pneumonia (RR 0.44, 95% CI 0.25 to 0.78), shorter hospital stay (MD -1.7 days, 95% CI -2.4 to -1.1) and higher maximal inspiratory pressure values at the end of the training protocol (MD 12 cmH2O, 95% CI 8 to 16). The mechanical ventilation time was similar in both groups. The quality of evidence was high for pneumonia, length of hospital stay and maximal inspiratory pressure. CONCLUSION: Preoperative RMT reduced the risk of PPCs and pneumonia after cardiac surgery. The training also improved the maximal inspiratory pressure and reduced hospital stay. The effects on PPCs were large enough to warrant use of RMT in this population. REGISTRATION: CRD42021227779.
