RESUMO

This article provides a detailed analysis of the intellectual research project of Wilhelm Mann, one of the pioneers of experimental and educational psychology in Chile. Mann's work has been the object of so little analysis that his intellectual influences and networks are not clearly known. We analyzed 338 intratext citations from 22 works by Wilhelm Mann published during the period 1904-1915. As a result, we obtained a mapping of his cooperation networks and used a quantitative approach to study the authors who most influenced his career, among whom were William Stern, Herbert Spencer, Wilhelm Wundt, Alfred Binet, and Ernst Meumann. Mann was closely connected to the international and contemporary advances and discussions of his time, despite the lack of infrastructure and difficulties in communication. Mann was the first psychologist to develop a long-term project in Chile that aimed to measure the individualities of Chilean students and their intellectual development.

RESUMO

Infant mortality (IM), an index that corresponds to the number of deaths among children up to one year, is an important social indicator of a region. It generally reflects the conditions of socioeconomic development - in addition, the access and quality of resources available for maternal and child health care. Monitoring its magnitude, thus, can help in the definition of public policies for its confrontation. The main causes of IM can be also associated with biological, behavioral, and public health issues. In this work, implication and association rules based on Formal Concept Analysis are used to recognize patterns in births occurring in the state of Amapá (located in the Brazilian Amazon), where the index of infant mortality is more severe.

The World Health Organization (WHO) proposed a set of criteria to be considered for the prioritization of COVID-19 candidate vaccines for further development of phase II/III clinical trials, thinking in a target audience that includes vaccine scientists, product developers, manufacturers, regulators, and funding agencies. In this paper, a knowledge-based or rational strategy is employed to perform a prioritization matrix of approved COVID-19 vaccines: BBIBP-CorV, JANSSEN, CORONAVAC, SPUTNIK V, MODERNA, PFIZER, and VAXZEVRIA, based on those proposed criteria by WHO, related to safety, efficacy, stability, implementation, and availability. We found that JANSSEN vaccine is the one with the highest score in the present study, but our analysis suggests that the WHO criteria could be more useful if they are considered separately, taking into account the social, demographic and economic characteristics of each country.

Introduction: A concept is an idea about something or an action. Objective: To analyze the concept of "Gender Violence" from the Rodgers' evolutionary perspective. Materials and methods: An evolutionary analysis of this concept was carried out through a review of literature published between 2000 and 2018. The inclusion criteria were: research articles related to implementation of strategies and politics; thesis; books; book chapters; and reports. They were found in the databases of Lilacs, Ebsco, SciELO, CINAHL, Web of Science, PubMed, and Google Scholar. The review also included documents from international organizations published from 2000 to 2018 in Spanish, English or Portuguese, which discussed Ibero-American issues. Results: Gender violence is a phenomenon with structural, social and political dimensions and is caused by the structural discrimination triggered by a sex-gender-patriarchy system. Related terms such as gender inequality, control, asymmetric relationships were found. Likewise, surrogate terms, i.e., violence against intimate partners, women and domestic violence, were also identified. Conclusions: Gender violence constitutes a violation against human rights that affects the dignity, physical and moral integrity, freedom, and autonomy of people.

RESUMO

Abstract This article explores sociological consciousness, a framework of thought proposed by Peter Berger, and its potential value for occupational therapy. This article explores how Berger's four motifs (debunking, unrespectable, relativization, and cosmopolitan) of sociological consciousness can be taught as a process to help occupational therapists frame their thinking when approaching various clients and situations. The current study answers three questions: "What is sociological consciousness?", "Is sociological consciousness valuable?", and "Is sociological consciousness applicable to occupational therapy?" Wilson's method of concept analysis is used to understand this topic and its practical applications to occupational therapy. Using the Wilson method of analysis to break down the components of this concept, compare it to similar and contrary cases, and explore its social context, the findings suggest that sociological consciousness is relevant to occupational therapy and warrants inclusion in practice, research, curriculum, and continuing education. Sociological consciousness adds depth to clinical reasoning and promotes critical thinking and reflection on implicit biases which may negatively influence therapeutic interactions with clients.

AIM: To report an analysis of the concept nursing care of overweight children. BACKGROUND: Patient care is the essence of nursing practice. Nursing professionals must define how to serve specific population groups, including overweight children, presenting real solutions to their problem. A clear conceptual analysis is necessary to unify nursing language and to contribute to nursing practice. DESIGN: Concept analysis. DATA SOURCES: The following databases were searched: COCHRANE, SCOPUS, LILACS, CINAHL, MEDLINE/PubMed, and CAPES Theses Library of Brazil. REVIEW METHODS: Walker and Avant's concept analysis methodology was adopted in this study. Twenty-two articles were analyzed, and the uses, attributes, antecedents, and outcomes of the concept were identified. The nursing care assumptions proposed by Virginia Henderson comprised the theoretical referential. RESULTS: The attributes of nursing care for overweight children included investigation, guidance, and monitoring of dietary, clinical, academic, and social aspects, along with evaluation of lifestyle and anthropometric data related to the affected children and their families. CONCLUSION: This study enabled the construction of a defined concept for nursing care of overweight children that may be useful in the construction of a medium-range theory. Further research is recommended to verify the usefulness of the nursing approach.

RESUMO

AIM: To analyse and define the concept "evidence based practice readiness" in nurses. BACKGROUND: Evidence based practice readiness is a term commonly used in health literature, but without a clear understanding of what readiness means. Concept analysis is needed to define the meaning of evidence based practice readiness. METHOD: A concept analysis was conducted using Walker and Avant's method to clarify the defining attributes of evidence based practice readiness as well as antecedents and consequences. A Boolean search of PubMed and Cumulative Index for Nursing and Allied Health Literature was conducted and limited to those published after the year 2000. Eleven articles met the inclusion criteria for this analysis. RESULTS: Evidence based practice readiness incorporates personal and organisational readiness. Antecedents include the ability to recognize the need for evidence based practice, ability to access and interpret evidence based practice, and a supportive environment. CONCLUSION: The concept analysis demonstrates the complexity of the concept and its implications for nursing practice. The four pillars of evidence based practice readiness: nursing, training, equipping and leadership support are necessary to achieve evidence based practice readiness. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT: Nurse managers are in the position to address all elements of evidence based practice readiness. Creating an environment that fosters evidence based practice can improve patient outcomes, decreased health care cost, increase nurses' job satisfaction and decrease nursing turnover.

RESUMO

AIM: This study aims to analyse the concept of cancer survivorship using Rodgers' evolutionary concept analysis model. BACKGROUND: The lack of a consensus definition as well as the confusion and debate concerning the definitions of "survivor" and "cancer survivorship" hinder an understanding of the intrinsic needs associated with the latter. DESIGN: Concept analysis. METHOD: A systematic literature search was performed using the following databases: PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, LILACS, and PsycINFO with studies published between 2000 and 2014. The final sample contained 39 studies that were analysed on the basis of Rodgers' model and inductive thematic analysis, discussed through the lens of the medical anthropology concept of culture. FINDINGS: Cancer survivorship is a broad concept that can be understood using 8 themes: changes in life plans, positive and negative aspect dualities, life reflections, identity change, individual experiences, symptom control, the need for support, and quality of care. These themes are summarized using 2 attributes: liminality process and culturally congruent care. CONCLUSIONS: This article contributes to understanding of cancer survivorship and the processes that are intrinsic to this concept. It calls for future investigations to enhance cancer survivorship across its 2 domains at the personal (patient's life) and clinical (nursing practice) levels.

RESUMO

The process of assigning workload to nurses is significant in promoting high nursing retention rates, and positive patient outcomes. The concept, workload is widely used but there is no clear delineation of the concept as it relates to nursing. The aim of this analysis was to explore the concept of workload, as it relates to nursing using the Walker and Avant method. The analysis revealed: a) three attributes (time, mental state, and assignment); b) four antecedents (health, environment, nursing, and person); c) and three consequences (safety of practice, retention rate and cost). It is essential that nursing leaders create and use a systematic approach to guide the staffing process to create a balance workload. As a result, nursing practice will be safer and optimal patient outcomes will be achieved.

In research literature, the concept of critical thinking has been widely utilized in nursing education. However, critical thinking has been defined and evaluated using a variety of methods. This paper presents a concept analysis to define and clarify the concept of critical thinking to provide a deeper understanding of how critical thinking can be incorporated into nursing education through the use of simulation exercises. A theoretical definition and sample cases were developed to illuminate the concept as well as a discussion of the antecedents, consequences, and empirical referents of critical thinking.

RESUMO

AIM: To report on the analysis of the concept of the stigma of mental illness within the Haitian American community. BACKGROUND: Mental illness is a highly stigmatized condition within certain communities making it challenging for individuals to seek effective treatment. The consequences of such stigma can have lifelong corollaries for the individuals, the families and the communities. INTRODUCTION: The concept of stigma is not fully developed in nursing; clarity of the concept of stigma of mental illness is still needed in the nursing literature. In order to assist patients in accessing mental health services, the concept of stigma must first be clarified. METHODS: The method used for this concept analysis was that of Walker and Avant. FINDINGS: Five attributes were identified, creating the following definition: labelling, stereotype, negative attitude, emotional response, and discrimination. The antecedents for stigma of mental illness are lack of knowledge about mental illness, emotional state and cultural beliefs and values. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND HEALTH POLICY: The origins of stigmatization of mental illness among Haitian Americans need to be understood. Mental health illnesses are stigmatized within the Haitian culture, which presents as a barrier to accessing help for many Haitian American women suffering from mental illness. The defining attributes can be used to develop tools to help clinicians identify patients being stigmatized. Once stigma is recognized, nurses can develop strategies and policies that can mitigate the effects of stigmatization of mental illness among this patient population. CONCLUSION: Further research is essential to examine the ways in which this concept impacts the Haitian American community, as well as effective strategies to help minimize its effects.

RESUMO

AIM: A concept analysis of nurse practitioner (NP) role transition. BACKGROUND: The Affordable Care Act is expected to provide 32 million Americans with health insurance, and NPs are gaining attention in addressing this increasing demand for healthcare providers. However, there is limited analysis of the transition from registered nurse to NP. Oftentimes, during this transition, there is a shift from an experienced, expert status to an inexperienced, novice status, with a subsequent loss of confidence in one's ability and competence. This can hinder successful role development and affect employment continuity within the first year of practice. METHODS AND SOURCES: NP role transition was examined using Walker and Avant's method of concept analysis. Electronic databases were searched using the terms role transition and nurse practitioner. Thirty articles from nursing, psychology, and business were included. FINDINGS AND CONCLUSIONS: The four defining attributes of NP role transition are absorption of the role, the shift from provider of care to prescriber of care, straddling two identities, and mixed emotions. Personal and environmental antecedents and consequences of the concept are identified. The development of empirical knowledge on NP role transition through further research is important in order for new-to-practice NPs to become high-quality, full-functioning providers.

All nursing education programs were mandated by the National League of Nursing to include critical thinking as a major component in curriculums. Although the term is widely used, there is no clear definition of the usages of the concept in nursing. The aim of this analysis was to explore the concept of critical thinking, as it relates to nursing using the Walker and Avant method. The analysis revealed: a) different meanings and uses of the concept, including; b) attributes (assessment, evaluation, and open-mind); c) antecedents (problem, questioning attitude, and need for answers); d) consequences (safer practice and confidence in nurse's decision making); and e) empirical referents. A systematic approach is needed to guide nurses and nursing students in the path of cultivating critical thinking. It is essential that nursing students learn about critical thinking from the beginning of their nursing education. As a result, nursing decision will be more accurate and the clients' outcomes will be improved.

Abstract The nursing has worried to extend its conceptual frame, being based on the analysis of concepts and the investigation of the own phenomena. According to Morse, "the techniques of concept analysis have become a standard part of the programs of doctorate in infirmary; in spite of these advantages, there is a great amount of conceptual exploration that has still not been obtained". This article argues the analysis of the concepts of cardiovascular health, using like the revision of literature and interviews to professionals of health and people who live in situation of cardiovascular disease in a city of the Cordoba department, Colombia, in order to identify what the people think about this concept, sufficiently to illustrate an analysis that orients to the nurse in the boarding of the care of the cardiovascular health of an effective and in agreement with the needs of the people. For the conceptual exploration, we used the method of Rodgers (2, 3), who proposed the evolutionary point of view for the development of concepts from gross data (published literature or interview), considering context (antecedents, consequences and relations with other concepts). When exploring the analysis of the concepts, it is evident that there is no clarity in the concept cardiovascular health, as much in the group of people who live in situation of cardiovascular disease like in the professionals of the health, which corroborates the importance of the analysis for the unification of concepts. This is a reason why a new definition of the concept is explored, with its main attributes for the understanding from a vision sets out to discipline under the assumptions of the theory of Dorothea Orem.

Nurses who engage with their work are more productive, provide safer care, and are more likely to provide an outstanding patient experience. However, the concept of nurse engagement has been used in diff erent contexts and with diff erent meanings, transforming into an ambiguous concept. The aim of this article is to analyze the concept of nurse engagement, as it relates to the patient experience, using the Walker and Avant method. The concept analysis revealed: a) various meanings and uses of the concept; b) attributes (self-effi cacy; autonomy and control over nursing practice; and optimizing nurse communication); c) antecedents (empowerment and job resources); d) consequences (greater satisfaction with their working environment; more autonomy within their practice; better commitment to their job and their patients; and a stronger patient safety culture); and e) empirical referents. The Institute of Medicine recognized nurse engagement as a signifi cant factor having a direct eff ect on the patients experience. Consequently, having a clear concept of nurse engagement can generate further research and lead to developing interventions and education that will encourage and enhance nurse engagement, and the patients experience.

PURPOSE: This article is a report of an analysis of the concept of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and its application to the nursing population. BACKGROUND: Nurses are at an increased risk for work-related stress resulting in retention issues and impaired functioning in work and home environment. The nursing discipline has been inconsistent with the concepts used to describe the distress and resultant discussions related to the comprehensive nature of the distress experienced, heavily focusing on existing medical language that emphasizes disorders and psychopathology. REVIEW METHODS: Walker and Avant's strategy for concept analysis was used in this analysis. A literature review for 1994-2011 was conducted for the following keywords: secondary traumatic stress, compassion fatigue, vicarious traumatization, posttraumatic stress disorder, and nurse. RESULTS: The concept of posttraumatic stress disorder in the nursing population is best described within the context of the Nurse as Wounded Healer theory. Essential attributes include intrusions, avoidance, and hyperarousal. The consequences include worldview changes, retention issues, sleep disruption, and social network disturbances. CONCLUSION: This concept analysis viewed through The Nurse as Wounded Healer lens, offers clarity to the concept of PTSD within the nursing population and identifies limitations to prior conceptualizations.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To analyze the concept of prenatal obesity within a psychoneuroimmunology framework. CONCLUSION: By considering the psychosocial, neurological, endocrine, and immunological contributions, a psychoneuroimmunology framework maintains a holistic focus. Identifying the multidirectional mechanisms linking these systems will provide valuable insight into the mechanisms by which prenatal obesity increases the rate of adverse pregnancy outcomes. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Utilization of the concept of prenatal obesity within a psychoneuroimmunology framework will facilitate multidisciplinary research to identify underlying mechanisms by which prenatal obesity leads to adverse pregnancy outcomes, as well as the development of interventions to treat obesity before, during, and after pregnancy.
