RESUMO

The study aimed to understand the feeding behavior of Neotropical brown stink bug nymphs Euschistus heros (F.) on soybean plants during vegetative stage through electropenetrography (EPG) technique. Three distinct phases were identified: non-feeding, pathway, and ingestion. Waveforms representing these phases were consistent across nymphal instars and plant structures, and named Np, Eh1, and Eh2, respectively. Biological interpretations of the waveforms were proposed by integrating visual observations, comparisons with adult waveforms, and histological studies. The waveforms Np, Eh1, and Eh2 were associated with resting/walking, initial stylet-plant contact, and xylem sap ingestion, respectively. Notably, nymphs showed a higher number of Eh1 events and longer durations when feeding on petioles compared to leaves, particularly in younger instars. However, differences between instars diminished in older nymphs. Fifth instars consistently exhibited the highest Eh1 values, and displayed longer xylem ingestion durations compared to other instars. Second instars demonstrated increased xylem ingestion events on petioles compared to leaves. Across plant structures, on petioles, nymphs generally showed longer xylem ingestion durations than on leaf surfaces. Fifth instar consistently had the longest ingestion durations overall. Additionally, statistical differences in xylem ingestion duration were observed between instars within each plant structure, with fifth instars displaying the longest durations. These findings offer valuable insights into the feeding behavior of E. heros nymphs, which could inform the development of more effective pest management strategies for soybean crops.

Here, we describe for the first time the sperm morphology of Tingidae (Heteroptera). They are small insects presenting lacy patterns on their pronotum and hemielytra and are exclusively phytophagous, with many economically important species. We studied five species of the tribe Tingini (Tinginae): Teleonemia scrupulosa, Vatiga illudens, Gargaphia lunulata, Leptopharsa sp., and Corythucha arcuata. Their spermiogenesis process is similar to other Heteroptera, with some differences in the formation of the centriole adjunct. This structure extends in the anteroposterior spermatid axis, flanking the nucleus, possibly contributing to nucleus remodeling and sperm elongation. The mature sperm of Tingidae is also similar to that of other Heteroptera, with features that corroborate the group's monophyly. Our data support previous results for their sister family, Miridae, which exhibits some characteristics exclusive to this taxon, not present in Tingidae or other Heteroptera. They also support the sister relationship of the genera Gargaphia and Leptopharsa and suggest closer relationship between Vatiga and Corythucha. Overall, this study sheds light on the sperm ultrastructure of Tingidae and provides information for understanding the evolution and diversity of Heteroptera. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: The spermiogenesis process and mature sperm are similar to other Heteroptera The centriole adjunct is derived from a strip of a pericentriolar material extending from the centriole Tingidae and Miridae are distinguishable using sperm morphology.

Triatoma dimidiata is a species complex, and its members are responsible for the transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease. We present the assembly and annotation of the mitogenome of the Triatoma dimidiata (Latreille, 1811) and Triatoma huehuetenanguensis Lima-Cordón & Justi, 2019. The mitochondrial genomes were successfully sequenced using the Illumina Nextseq 500 platform, 2×75 cycles, and 5 million reads per sample. Contigs were assembled and annotated using the reference genomes of T. dimidiata and T. huehuetenanguensis available in Genbank (NC_002609 and NC_050325.1, respectively). The mitogenomes of T. dimidiata have lengths of 17,008 bp, while those of T. huehuetenanguensis are 15,910 bp and 15,909 bp. The genome comprises 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, and a control region. The mitogenomes will be valuable to scholars and students focused on integrative taxonomy, phylogeography, and evolutionary studies of the Triatoma dimidiata complex and the transmission of Chagas diseases.

BACKGROUND: The most common pentatomid species in soybean crops are Euschistus heros (F.), Piezodorus guildinii (W.), and Diceraeus melacanthus (D.), causing a significant reduction in yield. It is known that these stink bugs inhabit the reproductive structures of soybeans simultaneously; however, there are few studies addressing their intraguild interactions, as well as aspects of possible competition between them in plants. Thus, the interspecific and intraspecific interactions of these stink bugs were evaluated in laboratory and field conditions, throughout the duration of the instars and adulthood, including longevity, mortality, and the number of eggs per female. RESULTS: Euschistus heros had a higher competitive capacity in the interaction with D. melacanthus and P. guildinii, negatively interfering in the abundance or development (duration of instar, fertility, and mortality) of these stink bugs in soybean crops. This interference may act on the natural balance of these insect pests. Mortality of adults in interactions containing E. heros as a competitor or not showed that this species was not affected by the other species under field conditions. In the scenario where D. melacanthus was evaluated, it was observed that the presence of other species caused higher mortality in D. melacanthus. Additionally, higher P. guildiniii mortality was observed in interspecific interactions. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that E. heros has a greater competitive ability in the soybean crop, followed by D. melacanthus and P. guildinii. Therefore, the results found justified the greater abundance of E. heros and helped to explain the increasing occurrence of D. melacanthus in soybean crops, contributing to new directions for understanding the interaction of the soybean stink bug complex. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Vector species richness may drive the prevalence of vector-borne diseases by influencing pathogen transmission rates. The dilution effect hypothesis predicts that higher biodiversity reduces disease prevalence, but with inconclusive evidence. In contrast, the amplification effect hypothesis suggests that higher vector diversity may result in greater disease transmission by increasing and diversifying the transmission pathways. The relationship between vector diversity and pathogen transmission remains unclear and requires further study. Chagas disease is a vector-borne disease most prevalent in Brazil and transmitted by multiple species of insect vectors of the subfamily Triatominae, yet the drivers of spatial variation in its impact on human populations remain unresolved. We tested whether triatomine species richness, latitude, bioclimatic variables, human host population density, and socioeconomic variables predict Chagas disease mortality rates across over 5000 spatial grid cells covering all of Brazil. Results show that species richness of triatomine vectors is a good predictor of mortality rates caused by Chagas disease, which supports the amplification effect hypothesis. Vector richness and the impact of Chagas disease may also be driven by latitudinal components of climate and human socioeconomic factors. We provide evidence that vector diversity is a strong predictor of disease prevalence and give support to the amplification effect hypothesis.

Physicochemical parameters, microbial diversity using sequencing and amplicon, and metabolite concentrations from Ginger Bug and Ginger Beer were characterized. Furthermore, the sensory aspects of the beverage were determined. The longer ginger bug activation time (96 h) resulted in higher production of organic acids and alcohols, increased phenolic and volatile compounds concentration, greater microbial diversity, and increased lactic acid bacteria and yeasts. In the same way, the longer fermentation time (14 days) of ginger beer resulted in higher ethanol content, volatile compounds, and phenolic compounds, in addition to better sensory characteristics. Our results showed that ginger beer produced with ginger bug and fermented for 14 days showed better volatile and phenolic compound profiles, physicochemical parameters, microbial diversity, and sensory characteristics.

Puya alpestris, P. berteroniana and P. chilensis (Bromeliaceae) are terrestrial plants present in north-central Chile, considered important part of the shrub flora due to their abundance and close interaction with animals. A previous study showed that bromeliad cover positively correlates with the abundance of the sylvatic triatomine vector Mepraia spinolai, only when infected by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent of Chagas disease. Here, we assessed the biological interactions and abiotic conditions provided by these Puya species to M. spinolai. During the austral summers of 2015 and 2016, we sampled 17 sites with presence of M. spinolai colonies. In each site, we estimated the presence of bromeliad and its cover proportion, and placed a camera trap for three months near a M. spinolai colony to record the vertebrates potentially interacting with this triatomine. Three of the camera traps were placed right in front of M. spinolai-colonized bromeliads. At the same time, triatomines present under these bromeliads were collected to assess their blood meal by Next Generation Sequencing. Between July 2017 and January 2018, we examined the abiotic conditions (temperature and humidity) under bromeliad, under rocks and at ground level. We detected 40 vertebrate species associated to Puya spp. (18 birds, 16 mammals, and 6 reptiles). Puya spp. are a resource for keystone species in T. cruzi sylvatic transmission, including small mammals (Octodon degus, Phyllotis darwini) and lizard species (Liolaemus spp.), detecting a positive association between bromeliad presence and availability of reptiles and non-domestic mammals. Native rodents and humans were the most represented vertebrates in the diet of M. spinolai collected under bromeliads. Temperatures were more stable under bromeliad, showing lower amplitude (up to 14.3 °C) compared to under rocks (23.7 °C) or at ground level (49.6 °C). Bromeliads present in the semiarid-Mediterranean ecosystem provide feeding opportunities for triatomines, and act as buffer of abiotic conditions reducing daily thermal amplitude. The presence of bromeliads near human settlements should be carefully monitored, especially because their leaves are consumed by people and browsed by livestock present in endemic areas of Chagas disease.

The egg parasitoid Cleruchoides noackae Lin & Huber, 2007 (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) is originated from Australia and the main biological control agent of Thaumastocoris peregrinus Carpenter & Dellapé, 2006 (Hemiptera: Thaumastocoridae) on Eucalyptus L'Hér (Myrtaceae). Companies that grow Eucalyptus are in need of a mass rearing protocol to increase the number of individuals produced and improve the quality of this parasitoid. The aim of this study was to define a protocol for mass rearing C. noackae in T. peregrinus eggs, based in the evaluations of the key biological attributes of this parasitoid in the parental and F1 generations, after the cold storage of the parasitised host eggs. Two methods were tested as C. noackae rearing protocols. In the first, parasitised eggs of T. peregrinus by C. noackae were cold stored for 7 days after being left in a climatic chamber at 24 ± 2°C, 60 ± 10% RH and a photoperiod of 12:12 (light:dark) h (standard environmental conditions) for 3, 6, 9 or 12 days. In the second, T. peregrinus eggs parasitised by C. noackae were maintained in a climatic chamber under standard environmental conditions for 6 days, after which these eggs were cold-stored for 0 (control), 7, 14 or 21 days. Parasitism (%), and the development period (parasitism to adult) and female proportion (%) of C. noackae were evaluated. Based on the results (parental generation: parasitism, around 45%; F1 generation: parasitism, around 55%; development period, around 16 days; female proportion, around 60%), eggs should be stored at 5°C on the sixth day after parasitism by C. noackae and maintained at this temperature for 7 days. The cold storage of T. peregrinus eggs, after parasitism, can be included in the mass rearing protocols of the parasitoid C. noackae.

Piezodorus guildinii (Westwood, 1837) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) is an important arthropod pest of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) throughout American continents. However, the historical events associated with its dispersion are poorly understood. In this study, we employed a phylogeographic approach to investigate the origin and demographic history of P. guildinii in Brazil. We analyzed the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and Cytb gene sequences of P. guildinii individuals collected in Brazil's 5 soybean production macro-regions and cross-referenced this information with sequences available in public databases. Our findings support an older Caribbean basin establishment for the current genealogical strains of P. guildinii, with subsequent dispersion to Brazil around 0.97 Mya. No secondary dispersion of this species from the Caribbean region to soybean areas in Brazil was identified. The Brazilian populations of P. guildinii are genetically structured across the country's soybean macro-regions and show strong signals of continuous demographic and spatial expansion in Brazil, which may be accelerated by the soybean cropping landscape in the country. The populations from the northern region (MR5) are older than the Central and South populations. The signs of demographic expansion indicate that P. guildinii populations are increasing their effective size in soybean regions, which could reflect its importance as a soybean pest in the coming years.

Triatominae are associated with various Brazilian habitats, including bird nests, animal burrows, and peridomestic structures. Despite extensive studies on triatomines in domiciliary environments in Ceará, Brazil, there has been limited research on their presence in the wild. This study focuses on the municipality of Morrinhos in Ceará, which is characterized by a Caatinga biome and riparian forests along the Acaraú River. During the study, a total of 185 nests of Pseudoseisura cristata were analyzed in rural locations and triatomines were collected in 26 nests from 12 different locations. A total of 117 triatomines was collected, belonging to three species: Psammolestes tertius, Rhodnius nasutus, and Triatoma pseudomaculata. Rhodnius nasutus was the only species found in a nest inhabited by Didelphis albiventris. Nests of P. cristata serve as shelters for various animals, providing an ideal environment for triatomines to establish colonies due to their proximity to food sources and their generalist feeding habits. The incorporation of anthropogenic materials by birds in nest construction can indirectly affect the presence of other animals that may serve as food sources for triatomines. Understanding the interactions between triatomines, birds, and their habitats is essential for assessing the risks associated with triatomine infestation in wild ecosystems.

Satellite DNAs (satDNAs) are highly repeated tandem sequences primarily located in heterochromatin, although their occurrence in euchromatin has been reported. Here, our aim was to advance the understanding of satDNA and multiple sex chromosome evolution in heteropterans. We combined cytogenetic and genomic approaches to study, for the first time, the satDNA composition of the genome in an Oxycarenidae bug, Oxycarenus hyalinipennis. The species exhibits a male karyotype of 2n = 19 (14A + 2 m + X1 X2 Y), with a highly differentiated Y chromosome, as demonstrated by C-banding and comparative genomic hybridization, revealing an enrichment of repeats from the male genome. Additionally, comparative analysis between males and females revealed that the 26 identified satDNA families are significantly biased towards male genome, accumulating in discrete regions in the Y chromosome. Exceptionally, the OhyaSat04-125 family was found to be distributed virtually throughout the entire extension of the Y chromosome. This suggests an important role of satDNA in Y chromosome differentiation, in comparison of other repeats, which collectively shows similar abundance between sexes, about 50%. Furthermore, chromosomal mapping of all satDNA families revealed an unexpected high spread in euchromatic regions, covering the entire extension, irrespective of their abundance. Only discrete regions of heterochromatin on the Y chromosome and of the m-chromosomes (peculiar chromosomes commonly observed in heteropterans) were enriched with satDNAs. The putative causes of the intense enrichment of satDNAs in euchromatin are discussed, including the possible existence of burst cycles similar to transposable elements and as a result of holocentricity. These data challenge the classical notion that euchromatin is not enriched with satDNAs.

BACKGROUND: Laboratory-selected resistant strains of Euschistus heros to thiamethoxam (NEO) and lambda-cyhalothrin (PYR) were recently reported in Brazil. However, the mechanisms conferring resistance to these insecticides in E. heros remain unresolved. We utilized comparative transcriptome profiling and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) calling of susceptible and resistant strains of E. heros to investigate the molecular mechanism(s) underlying resistance. RESULTS: The E. heros transcriptome was assembled, generating 91 673 transcripts with a mean length of 720 bp and N50 of 1795 bp. Comparative gene expression analysis between the susceptible (SUS) and NEO strains identified 215 significantly differentially expressed (DE) transcripts. DE transcripts associated with the xenobiotic metabolism were all up-regulated in the NEO strain. The comparative analysis of the SUS and PYR strains identified 204 DE transcripts, including an esterase (esterase FE4), a glutathione-S-transferase, an ABC transporter (ABCC1) and aquaporins that were up-regulated in the PYR strain. We identified 9588 and 15 043 nonsynonymous SNPs in the PYR and NEO strains. One of the SNPs (D70N) detected in the NEO strain occurs in a subunit (α5) of the nAChRs, the target site of neonicotinoid insecticides. Nevertheless, this residue position in α5 is not conserved among insects. CONCLUSIONS: Neonicotinoid and pyrethroid resistance in laboratory-selected E. heros is associated with a potential metabolic resistance mechanism by the overexpression of proteins commonly involved in the three phases of xenobiotic metabolism. Together these findings provide insight into the potential basis of resistance in E. heros and will inform the development and implementation of resistance management strategies against this important pest. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

This study aimed to characterize and correlate the stylet penetration behaviors of nymphs of the Neotropical brown stink bug, Euschistus heros (F.), on immature soybean pods. Waveforms were obtained using electropenetrography (EPG). The findings revealed that the nymphs exploited the xylem vessels and the seed tegument or endosperm. Primarily 4 phases were characterized: nonfeeding, pathway, salivation, and ingestion. The waveforms of each phase were similar in appearance across instars. The biological meanings of waveforms were based on visual observations, comparison with waveforms of adults, and histological studies. Np represents the insect resting or walking on soybean pod surface. Eh1 represents the first contact between the mouthparts (stylets) and plant tissue. Eh2 represents xylem sap ingestion, and Eh3 represents seed activities (including tegument and endosperm). The number of waveform events did not differ among instars for all waveforms. However, for Eh3, fifth instars performed more activities than other instars. The second instars had the smallest value, and third and fourth instars had intermediate values. For total duration, all waveforms differed among instars. Np duration was shorter for third compared with second and fourth instars and intermediate for fifth instar. For Eh1, second and third instars had the longest duration (1.5× to 2× greater) compared with fourth and fifth instars. For Eh2 and Eh3, the second-instar showed the longest (~2× greater) and shortest durations, respectively. Overall, this study provides important insights into the feeding behavior of E. heros nymphs so that effective pest management programs can be developed to contain this pest.

Eucalyptus species are among the most planted trees in forestry production, an ever-increasing commercial activity worldwide. Forestry expansion demands a continuous search for preventive and sanitary measures against pests and diseases. Massive application of phytosanitary products is incompatible with the forestry sector, so forest health management must be based on other principles. In this context, studies on insect plant relationships mediated by plant metabolites may contribute information relevant to plant resistance and genotype selection. In this study, we analyzed the leaf metabolome of four Eucalyptus species commonly planted in southern South America, to correlate this chemical information with feeding preference of Thaumastocoris peregrinus (Hemiptera: Thaumastocoridae), an important pest of eucalypt plantations. Gas chromatography mass spectrometry analyses were performed on polar and non-polar leaf extracts from Eucalyptus globulus, Eucalyptus grandis, Eucalyptus robusta, and Eucalyptus tereticornis (Myrtaceae). Feeding preferences were assessed in two-choice laboratory bioassays resulting in a preference gradient of the four plant species. Moreover, a performance bioassay where we contrasted survival and development time between the most and least preferred plants, showed a clear correlation with preference both in survival and developmental time of the most susceptible nymph instar. We found that species with high or low feeding preferences differ significantly in several foliar metabolites, which may be acting as feeding stimulants or deterrents for T. peregrinus. These findings may provide useful criteria for choosing Eucalyptus genotypes when planting in bronze bug infested areas.

The Neotropical brown stink bug, Euschistus heros (Fabricius, 1798) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), is one of the major insect pests in soybean crops, causing severe damage; however, some aspects of its biology that are essential for management remain unknown. To aid in the management of E. heros, the present study investigated the fertility life table of this species at 7 temperatures (18, 20, 22, 25, 28, 30, and 32 ± 1 °C) and 4 relative-humidity levels (30, 50, 70, and 90 ± 10%). Based on the net reproductive rate, R0, we developed an ecological zoning for this pest in Brazil, to identify climatically favorable areas for population growth. Our results indicated that the most favorable range is between 25 and 28 °C and above 70% RH. The ecological zoning indicated that farmers should be more concerned in the northern and Midwest regions, which include the state of Mato Grosso, the largest soybean and corn producer in Brazil. These results provide valuable information, indicating the hotspots most likely to be attacked by the Neotropical brown stink bug.

BACKGROUND: Pycnoderes quadrimaculatus is a pest that feeds on several plants, many of which are economically important. It is native to North/Central America and its distribution has expanded to several countries in South America. RESULTS: Ecological niche models show that P. quadrimaculatus has invaded regions with climates different from those of its native range, and that there are suitable climatic conditions for its establishment worldwide. Regions where P. quadrimaculatus is a major threat and possible natural pathways of ingression were identified. In the future, its distribution will be modified by climate change. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides useful information for risk assessment and pest management of P. quadrimaculatus. According to our results, the species has great potential as a pest because it can adapt to different climatic conditions and feeds on a wide range of economically important plants. Over time, its distribution has expanded, and our models suggest that it will continue to invade other regions unless preventive measures are taken. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

The parasitoid Telenomus podisi Ashmead, 1893 is used in biological control programs in Brazil against eggs of Euschistus heros (Fabricius, 1798), a key pest of soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr. To optimize the mass production of parasitoids, artificial diets and storage of host eggs at low temperatures have been developed; however, direct comparisons of the effects of these conditions have not occurred. We assessed a double factorial arrangement composed of six treatments (fresh or cryopreserved E. heros eggs from adults fed on natural or two artificial diets). We evaluated the biological characteristics and parasitism capacity of T. podisi produced from these treatments across seven temperatures. The thermal range between 21 and 30 °C resulted in satisfactory daily parasitism in all treatments tested, with an inverse relationship between temperature and female survival. The best parasitoid biological parameters were found between 21 and 27 °C, where all tested diets supported T. podisi development, with the best results from artificial diets. Fresh eggs and those frozen in liquid nitrogen and stored at -196 °C until use supported parasitoid development. These results suggest that the best method to mass rear T. podisi is to use artificial diets to rear E. heros and store eggs until needed, and then rear parasitoids at 24 °C.

The brown stink bug, Euschistus heros (Fabricius, 1798) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), is one of the most abundant soybean stink bug pests in Brazil. Temperature is a key factor that affects its development and reproduction, and fluctuating temperatures may impact the development and reproduction of E. heros differently from those under constant temperatures. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of constant and fluctuating temperature on the biological characteristics of E. heros in three successive generations. Treatments consisted of six constant temperatures (19 °C, 22 °C, 25 °C, 28 °C, 31 °C and 34 °C) and four fluctuating temperatures (25:21 °C, 28:24 °C, 31:27 °C, and 34:30 °C) evaluated for three successive generations. Second-stage nymphs were evaluated daily, and after they reached the adult stage, they were separated by sex, and the individual weight (mg) and pronotum size (mm) were recorded. After pair formation, eggs were collected to evaluate the pre-oviposition period, total number of eggs, and egg viability. The duration of the nymphal stage was reduced with an increase in both constant and fluctuating temperatures; however, at constant temperatures of 19 °C, 31 °C and 34 °C and fluctuating temperatures of 28:24 °C, there was no reproduction in adults. The base temperature and total degree day requirement for nymphal development were 15.5 °C and 197.4 dd, respectively. Pre-oviposition period (d), number of eggs per female, and viability of eggs (%) were affected by temperature across the generations. The multiple decrement life table analysis revealed that mortality was highest during the molting of the second-stage nymphs. These findings have important implications for E. heros' laboratory mass-rearing programs and for its management in fields.

Aiming at the production of a safe food and new alternatives to chemical pest control, this study investigated the mortality of adults of the strawberry seed bug, Neopamera bilobata (Hemiptera: Rhyparochromidae), subjected to different products, most of which have low toxicity and low environmental impact. The insects were collected in cultivated areas of Fazenda Escola farm, at the State University of Londrina. A stock culture was established in the Entomology Laboratory (T: 25 ± 1 ºC; 12-h photophase) and maintained on sunflower seeds and distilled water for the development of bioassays and experiment in a greenhouse. The insects were preliminarily subjected to the following treatments: water; a formulation with orange peel essential oil (1 mL L-1); a product based on Sophora flavescens (3 mL L-1); a formulation with orange peel essential oil (1 mL L-1) + S. flavescens (3 mL L-1); S. flavescens (3 mL L-1) + neutral detergent (1 mL L-1); silicone adjuvant (1 mL L-1); sucrose ester (1 mL L-1); and thiamethoxam (0.1 g L-1) as a positive control. Due to the efficiency of S. flavescens, with mortality greater than 90%, different concentrations (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 mL L-1) were used on the adults. Higher doses of S. flavescens led to lower survival rates. After the dose of 4 mL L-1 was determined, another step was carried out in a greenhouse, using 18 pots with a capacity of 4 L of substrate containing plants of cultivar Albion surrounded by a voile fabric cage. Ten adult bugs were added to each pot; nine pots were sprayed with the S. flavescens-based product and the other nine only with distilled water. Sophora flavescens reduced the survival rate of N. bilobata in the laboratory and in the greenhouse. In conclusion, the S. flavescens-based product has the potential to control the bug N. bilobata at the tested rates, thus warranting further studies.(AU)


Buscando a produção de alimento seguro e novas alternativas ao controle químico de pragas, objetivou-se avaliar a mortalidade de adultos do percevejo-dos-frutos do morangueiro, Neopamera bilobata (Hemiptera: Rhyparochromidae) submetidos a diferentes produtos, sendo a maioria de baixa toxidez e baixo impacto ao ambiente. Os insetos foram coletados em áreas cultivadas da Fazenda Escola da Universidade Estadual de Londrina. Foi estabelecida uma criação estoque no Laboratório de Entomologia (T 25 ± 1ºC, com fotofase de 12 horas) e mantidos com sementes de girassol e água destilada, para realização dos bioensaios e experimento em casa de vegetação. Preliminarmente, os insetos foram submetidos aos seguintes tratamentos: água; produto formulado com óleo essencial de casca de laranja 1 mL L-1; produto à base de Sophora flavescens 3 mL L-1; produto formulado com óleo essencial de casca de laranja 1 mL L-1 + S. flavescens 3 mL L-1; S. flavescens 3 mL L-1 + detergente neutro 1mL L-1; adjuvante siliconado 1 mL L-1; éster de sacarose 1 mL L-1 e tiametoxan 0,1g L-1 como controle positivo. Em função da eficiência de S. flavescens com mortalidades superiores a 90%, os adultos foram submetidos a diferentes concentrações (1, 2, 3, 4 e 5 mL L-1). Quanto maior a dose de S flavescens menor foi a proporção de sobrevivência. Determinada a dose de 4 mL L-1 realizou-se outra etapa em Casa de Vegetação, dispondo-se 18 vasos, com capacidade de 4 litros de substrato, com plantas da Cultivar Albion, envoltas por gaiola de voil. Em cada vaso foram adicionados 10 adultos do percevejo, sendo que 9 vasos receberam a pulverização com o produto à base de S. flavescens e outros 9 somente água destilada. Observou-se que S. flavescens reduziu a proporção de sobrevivência de N. bilobata em laboratório e em casa de vegetação. Conclui-se que o produto à base de S. flavescens tem potencial para o controle do percevejo N. bilobata nas doses testadas, merecendo estudos complementares.(AU)

In this study, we evaluated the effect of the climatic season and infection by Trypanosoma cruzi, etiological agent of Chagas disease, on the molting capacity of the triatomine vector Mepraia spinolai endemic to Chile. We used wild-caught first-to-fourth instar nymphs during cooling (fall and winter) and warming (spring) periods. After capturing, nymphs were fed at the laboratory, and maintained under optimal rearing conditions. Feeding was repeated 40 days later. We followed-up the molting events on 709 nymphs, recording one, two or the absence of molts after two feeding opportunities. Within the same climatic period, only infected second- and fourth-instar nymphs from the warming period showed a larger proportion of double molting compared to uninfected nymphs. Regarding the climatic period, infected and uninfected first- and fourth-instar nymphs exhibited a larger proportion of double molting in the warming and cooling periods, respectively. The pattern of non-molting nymph occurrence suggests they probably reach diapause by environmental stochasticity. The effect of the climatic period and T. cruzi infection on the development of M. spinolai is an instar-dependent phenomenon, highlighting the occurrence of finely synchronized processes at different moments of the life cycle of such an hemimetabolous insect as triatomines.
