RESUMO

Based on orbital angular momentum (OAM) properties of Laguerre-Gaussian beams LG(p,ℓ), a robust optical encoding model for efficient data transmission applications is designed. This paper presents an optical encoding model based on an intensity profile generated by a coherent superposition of two OAM-carrying Laguerre-Gaussian modes and a machine learning detection method. In the encoding process, the intensity profile for data encoding is generated based on the selection of p and ℓ indices, while the decoding process is performed using a support vector machine (SVM) algorithm. Two different decoding models based on an SVM algorithm are tested to verify the robustness of the optical encoding model, finding a BER =10-9 for 10.2 dB of signal-to-noise ratio in one of the SVM models.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Local cancer therapy by combining real-time surgical exploration and resection with delivery of a single dose of high-energy electron irradiation entails a very precise and effective local therapeutic approach. Integrating the benefits from minimally invasive surgical techniques with the very precise delivery of intraoperative electron irradiation results in an efficient combined modality therapy. METHODS: Patients with locally advanced disease, who are candidates for laparoscopic and/or thoracoscopic surgery, received an integrated multimodal management. Preoperative treatment included induction chemotherapy and/or chemoradiation, followed by laparoscopic surgery and intraoperative electron radiation therapy. RESULTS: In a period of 5 consecutive years, 125 rectal cancer patients were treated, of which 35% underwent a laparoscopic approach. We found no differences in cancer outcomes and tolerance between the open and laparoscopic groups. Two esophageal cancer patients were treated with IOeRT during thoracoscopic resection, with the resection specimens showing intense downstaging effects. Two oligo-recurrent prostatic cancer patients (isolated nodal progression) had a robotic-assisted surgical resection and post-lymphadenectomy electron boost on the vascular and lateral pelvic wall. CONCLUSIONS: Minimally invasive and robotic-assisted surgery is feasible to combine with intraoperative electron radiation therapy and offers a new model explored with electron-FLASH beams.

RESUMO

Light-sheet fluorescence microscopy (LSFM) is useful for developmental biology studies, which require a simultaneous visualization of dynamic microstructures over large fields of views (FOVs). A comparative study between multicolor Bessel and Gaussian-based LSFM systems is presented. Discussing the chromatic implications to achieve colocalized and large FOVs when both optical arrays are implemented under the same excitation objective is the purpose of this work. The light-sheets FOVs, optical sectioning, and resolution are experimentally characterized and discussed. The advantages of using Bessel beams and the main drawbacks of using Gaussian beams for multicolor imaging are highlighted. Multiple Bessel excitation minimizes the FOV's mismatch's effects due to the beams chromatic defocusing and alleviates the aside object blurring obtained with multiple Gaussian beams. It also offers a fair homogeneous axial resolution and optical sectioning over a larger effective FOV. Imaging over perithecia samples of the fungus Sordaria macrospora demonstrates such advantages. This work complements previous comparative studies that discuss only single wavelengths light-sheets excitations.

ABSTRACT Introduction: initial treatment for the primary angle closure is aimed to modify the anterior ocular segment and to stabilize the disease. Objective: to assess if there are differences between patients treated with phacoemulsification or peripheral laser iridotomy, in terms of improvement of the anatomical parameters of the anterior ocular segment. Materials and methods: a quasi-experimental study was led with a historic control group in the province of Pinar del Rio, between January 2011 and January 2020. It included 196 eyes of 144 patients with primary angular closure, treated with phacoemulsification or laser peripheral iridotomy. The statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS program. Results: in the preoperative period there were not significant differences for the amplitude of the anterior chamber. In the postoperative there were very significant differences (p < 0.001) between the two surgical procedures for both ayes. In angular amplitude there were also very significant differences (p < 0.001) between preoperative y postoperative periods of both groups. The presence of peripheral anterior synechia was scarce, without differences between baseline values, and after two months in both eyes for each group. The evidence of angular closure, at the end of the period, between the phacoemulsification group and the iridotomy one was 4.9 % vs. 23.2 % (p = 0.029) in the right eye, and 2.7 % vs. 29.0 % (p = 0.003) in the left. Conclusions: both, crystalline lens extraction and laser peripheral iridotomy improve the anatomical parameters of the anterior segment, although the results are greater in ayes treated with phacoemulsification.

RESUMO

We report on the observation of the detachment in situ and in vivo of Dunaliella tertiolecta microalgae cells from a glass surface using a 1064 nm wavelength trapping laser beam. The principal bends of both flagella of Dunaliella were seen self-adhered to either the top or bottom coverslip surfaces of a 50 µm thick chamber. When a selected attached Dunaliella was placed in the trapping site, it photoresponded to the laser beam by moving its body and flagellar tips, which eventually resulted in its detachment. The dependence of the time required for detachment on the trapping power was measured. No significant difference was found in the detachment time for cells detached from the top or bottom coverslip, indicating that the induced detachment was not due solely to the optical forces applied to the cells. After detachment, the cells remained within the optical trap. Dunaliella detached from the bottom were seen rotating about their long axis in a counterclockwise direction, while those detached from the top did not rotate. The rotation frequency and the minimal force required to escape from the trap were also measured. The average rotation frequency was found to be independent of the trapping power, and the swimming force of a cell escaping the laser trap ranged from 4 to 10 picoNewtons. Our observations provide insight into the photostimulus produced when a near-infrared trapping beam encounters a Dunaliella. The microalgae frequently absorb more light than they can actually use in photosynthesis, which could cause genetic and molecular changes. Our findings may open new research directions into the study of photomovement in species of Dunaliella and other swimming microorganisms that could eventually help to solve technological problems currently confronting biomass production. In future work, studies of the response to excess light may uncover unrecognized mechanisms of photoprotection and photoacclimation.

RESUMO

Abstract At INFN-LNL (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare- Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro) SPES (Selective Production of Exotic Species), a new facility for the production of radioactive ion beams is being constructed at INFN-LNL (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare - Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro). Radioactive ion beams of neutron-rich nuclei with high purity, in the range of mass between 80 and 160 amu, will be produced by nuclear reactions induced by 40 MeV protons from a cyclotron. The goal of the ISOLPHARM project is to provide a feasibility study for an innovative technology for the production of extremely very high specific activity beta emitting radionuclides as radiopharmaceutical precursors. The ISOL method, adopted in the ISOLPHARM project (a branch of the SPES project), gives the possibility of obtaining pure isobaric beams. In this way, no isotopic contaminations will be present in the beam and afterwards in a proper trapping substrate. The ground-breaking idea of the ISOLPHARM method was granted an International patent (INFN).

Adding steel fibers to concrete improves the capacity in tension-driven failure modes. An example is the shear capacity in steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) beams with longitudinal reinforcement and without shear reinforcement. Since no mechanical models exist that can fully describe the behavior of SFRC beams without shear reinforcement failing in shear, a number of empirical equations have been suggested in the past. This paper compiles the existing empirical equations and code provisions for the prediction of the shear capacity of SFRC beams failing in shear as well as a database of 488 experiments reported in the literature. The experimental shear capacities from the database are then compared to the prediction equations. This comparison shows a large scatter on the ratio of experimental to predicted values. The practice of defining the tensile strength of SFRC based on different experiments internationally makes the comparison difficult. For design purposes, the code prediction methods based on the Eurocode shear expression provide reasonable results (with coefficients of variation on the ratio tested/predicted shear capacities of 27⁻29%). None of the currently available methods properly describe the behavior of SFRC beams failing in shear. As such, this work shows the need for studies that address the different shear-carrying mechanisms in SFRC and its crack kinematics.

RESUMO

Piezoelectric vibration energy harvesting (pVEH) microdevices can convert the mechanical vibrations to electrical voltages. In the future, these microdevices can provide an alternative to replace the electrochemical batteries, which cause contamination due to their toxic materials. We present the electromechanical modeling of a pVEH microdevice with a novel resonant structure for air conditioning vents at office buildings. This electromechanical modeling includes different multilayers and cross-sections of the microdevice resonator as well as the air damping. This microdevice uses a flexible substrate and it does not include toxics materials. The microdevice has a resonant structure formed by multilayer beams and U-shape proof mass of UV-resin (730 µm thickness). The multilayer beams contain flexible substrates (160 µm thickness) of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), two aluminum electrodes (100 nm thickness), and a ZnO layer (2 µm thickness). An analytical model is developed to predict the first bending resonant frequency and deflections of the microdevice. This model considers the Rayleigh and Macaulay methods, and the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. In addition, the electromechanical behavior of the microdevice is determined through the finite element method (FEM) models. In these FEM models, the output power of the microdevice is obtained using different sinusoidal accelerations. The microdevice has a resonant frequency of 60.3 Hz, a maximum deflection of 2.485 mm considering an acceleration of 1.5 m/s², an output voltage of 2.854 V and generated power of 37.45 µW with a load resistance of 217.5 kΩ. An array of pVEH microdevices connected in series could be used to convert the displacements of air conditioning vents at office buildings into voltages for electronic devices and sensors.

RESUMO

Cancer stem cells (CSCs) have been identified as the main center of tumor therapeutic resistance. They are highly resistant against current cancer therapy approaches particularly radiation therapy (RT). Recently, a wide spectrum of physical methods has been proposed to treat CSCs, including high energetic particles, hyperthermia (HT), nanoparticles (NPs) and combination of these approaches. In this review article, the importance and benefits of the physical CSCs therapy methods such as nanomaterial-based heat treatments and particle therapy will be highlighted.

RESUMO

Abstract NUMEN proposes cross sections measurements of Heavy-Ion double charge exchange reactions as an innovative tool to access the nuclear matrix elements, entering the expression of the life time of Neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ). A key aspect of the projectis the use at INFN-Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS) of the Superconducting Cyclotron (CS) for the acceleration of the required high resolution and low emittance heavy-ion beams and of MAGNEX large acceptance magnetic spectrometer for the detection of the ejectiles. The experimental measurements of double charge exchange reactions induced by heavy ions present a number of challenging aspects, since such reactions are characterized by very low cross sections. First experimental results give encouraging indication on the capability to access quantitative information towards the determination of the Nuclear Matrix Elements for 0νββ decay.

Summary SPES (Selective Production of Exotic Species) is the INFN project for a Nuclear Physics facility for the production of Radioactive Ion Beams (RIBs). It is in advanced construction in Legnaro, with several technological innovations and challenges foreseen, comprehensive of new achievements and improvements. SPES will provide mostly neutron-rich exotic beams, derived by the fission fragments (up to 1013fiss/s) produced in the interaction of an intense proton beam (200 μA) on a direct UCx target. Several other targets will be developed, in order to provide users a large beam selection. The expected SPES beam intensities, their quality and, finally, their maximum energies (up to 11 MeV/n for A=130) will permit to perform forefront research in nuclear structure and nuclear dynamics, studying a region of the nuclear chart far from stability. This goal will be reached by coordinating the developments on the accelerator complex and those of up-to-date experimental set-ups.

The quality correction factor [Formula: see text] for electron beams was calculated for three thimble ionization chambers, namely, NE2571, NE2571A and NE2581A. The Monte Carlo code PENELOPE was used to estimate the overall correction factor fc,Q of these chambers for electron beams with nominal energies ranging between 6 and 22MeV, corresponding to a Varian Clinac 2100 C/D. A 60Co beam was used as reference quality Q0. Also eight monoenergetic electron beams reproducing the quality index R50 of the Clinac beams were considered. The [Formula: see text] factors were calculated as the ratio between fc,Q and [Formula: see text] . Those obtained for the NE2571 ionization chamber show a nice agreement with those calculated by Muir and Rogers with EGSnrc. As it occurred to other ionization chambers analyzed in previous works, the [Formula: see text] factors found for the monoenergetic beams are larger (smaller) than those corresponding to the Clinac beams at low (high) R50 values, the differences being slightly above 0.5%. Finally, the [Formula: see text] factors obtained in the case of the NE2571A chamber are systematically ∼0.5% below those of its predecessor chamber, the NE2571.

RESUMO

Simulation of a linear accelerator (linac) head requires determining the parameters that characterize the primary electron beam striking on the target which is a step that plays a vital role in the accuracy of Monte Carlo calculations. In this work, the commissioning of photon beams (6 MV and 15 MV) of an Elekta Precise accelerator, using the Monte Carlo code EGSnrc, was performed. The influence of the primary electron beam characteristics on the absorbed dose distribution for two photon qualities was studied. Using different combinations of mean energy and radial FWHM of the primary electron beam, deposited doses were calculated in a water phantom, for different field sizes. Based on the deposited dose in the phantom, depth dose curves and lateral dose profiles were constructed and compared with experimental values measured in an arrangement similar to the simulation. Taking into account the main differences between calculations and measurements, an acceptability criteria based on confidence limits was implemented. As expected, the lateral dose profiles for small field sizes were strongly infl uenced by the radial distribution (FWHM). The combinations of energy/FWHM that best reproduced the experimental results were used to generate the phase spaces, in order to obtain a model with the motorized wedge included and to calculate output factors. A good agreement was obtained between simulations and measurements for a wide range of fi eld sizes , being all the results found within the range of tolerance.

In this paper, we demonstrate, numerically and experimentally that using the mask-lens setup used by Durnin to generate Bessel beams Durnin [Phys. Rev. Lett. 58, 1499 (1987)], it is possible to generate different kinds of propagation invariant beams. A modification in the amplitude or phase of the field that illuminates the annular slit is proposed that corresponds to modulation in frequency space. In particular, we characterize the new invariant beams that were obtained by modulating the amplitude of the annular mask and when the incident field was modulated with a one-dimensional quadratic or cubic phase. Experimental results using an amplitude mask are shown in order to corroborate the numerical predictions.

RESUMO

The present work describes the preparation of hydrogel based on cross-linked networks of poly (N-vinylpirrolidone), PVP, with polyethyleneglicol and agar with 90% water and PVP nancomposites with a synthetic nanoclay, Laponite XLG, for use as burn dressings. These systems were obtained in two ways: using gamma Co-60 and electron beam radiation. The gelation obtained dose was Dg= 1.72 kGy. The elastic modulus of hydrogel was independent of the method of irradiation. It was 0.39 MPa for the hydrogel irradiated with gamma Co-60 and 0.38 MPa for electron beam irradiation. The elastic modulus of the nanocomposite membrane was 1.25 MPa, three times higher. These results indicate that the PVP/Laponite XLG nanocomposite hydrogel membrane is the best choice for wound dressing applications due to its high water sorption capacity and its superior mechanical properties.

The results revealed that the longitudinal modulus of elasticity of Pinus elliottii is 18.70 greater than the shear modulus, and 21.16 greater than the shear modulus of Corymbia citriodora, being consistent this results when compared to the proposed by the Brazilian standard ABNT NBR 7190:1997 (Design of Wood Structures), being the longitudinal modulus of elasticity twenty times greater than the shear modulus.
