RESUMO

Aim: This study aimed to collect evidence on the validity and reliability of measurements obtained from digital impression techniques. Materials and Methods: This comparative study was conducted on 31 patients. Intraoral scanner was applied to all patients. For each patient, an alginate impression of the upper maxilla was taken and later the 3D digital model was extracted by dental cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). For preparation of plaster models, alginate impressions were taken and immediately poured with dental stone. In the next stage, a comparison was performed among the intraoral scanner, CBCT, and plaster models in terms of tooth size, dental width, and intra-arch dimensions. Results: Measuring tooth size and intra-arch dimensions in digital images obtained from intraoral scanner and CBCT were in most cases lower than the results obtained in the plaster models but the differences between digital techniques and plaster models are not clinically noticeable. Conclusions: Digital systems including intraoral scanner and CBCT are acceptable for clinical use in terms of accuracy.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the osteogenic potential of hydroxyapatite (HA), Alginate (Alg), and Gelatine (Gel) composite in a critical-size defect model in rats. Twenty-four male rats were divided into three groups: a negative control with no treatment (Control group), a positive control treated with deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM group), and the experimental group treated with the new HA-Alg-Gel composite (HA-Alg-Gel group). A critical size defect (8.5mm) was made in the rat's calvaria, and the bone formation was evaluated by in vivo microcomputed tomography analysis (µCT) after 1, 15, 45, and 90 days. After 90 days, the animals were euthanized and histological and histomorphometric analyses were performed. A higher proportion of mineralized tissue/biomaterial was observed in the DBBM group when compared to the HA-Alg-Gel and Control groups in the µCT analysis during all analysis periods. However, no differences were observed in the mineralized tissue/biomaterial proportion observed on day 1 (immediate postoperative) in comparison to later periods of analysis in all groups. In the histomorphometric analysis, the HA-Alg-Gel and Control groups showed higher bone formation than the DBBM group. Moreover, in histological analysis, five samples of the HA-Alg-Gal group exhibited formed bone spicules adjacent to the graft granules against only two of eight samples in the DBBM group. Both graft materials ensured the maintenance of defect bone thickness, while a tissue thickness reduction was observed in the control group. In conclusion, this study demonstrated the osteoconductive potential of HA-Alg-Gel bone graft by supporting new bone formation around its particles.

Purpose: Bacterial cellulose (BC) has shown high capacity for the treatment of wounds and burns, providing a moisty environment. Calcium alginate can be associated with BC to create gels that aid in wound debridement and contribute to appropriate wound healing. This study is aimed at characterizing and evaluating the use of bacterial cellulose/alginate gel in skin burns in rats. Methods: Cellulose and cellulose/alginate gels were compared regarding the capacity of liquid absorption, moisture, viscosity, and potential cytotoxicity. The 2nd degree burns were produced using an aluminum metal plate (2.0cm) at 120ºC for 20s on the back of rats. The animals were divided into non-treated, CMC(Carboxymethylcellulose), Cellulose(CMC with bacterial cellulose), and Cellulose/alginate(CMC with bacterial cellulose and alginate). The animals received topical treatment 3 times/week. Biochemical (MPO, NAG and oxidative stress), histomorphometry and immunohistochemical assays (IL-1ß IL-10 and VEGF) were conducted on the 14th, 21st, 28th, and 35th days. Results: Cellulose/Alginate gel showed higher absorption capacity and viscosity compared to Cellulose gel, with no cytotoxic effects. Cellulose/alginate presented lower MPO values, a higher percentage of IL-10, with greater and balanced oxidative stress profile. Conclusions: The use of cellulose/alginate gel reduced neutrophils and macrophage activation and showed greater anti-inflammatory response, which can contribute to healing chronic wounds and burns.

RESUMO

Introduction: Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) manifests with a constellation of common throat symptoms and inconclusive signs on laryngoscopic exam. It is a diagnosis, often made clinically, that can lead to prescriptions of proton pump inhibitors that are unnecessary and potentially harmful. Glottic insufficiency (GI) and the accompanying hyperfunctional laryngeal behaviors can also present with similar, common throat complaints that may or may not include a qualitative change to the voice. Methods: This is a reflection article. It is written to summarize, explain, and support with evidence the opinion of the author on the topic of how symptoms of voice disorders can easily be mistaken for symptoms of LPR. The offered reflection is based on his experience, research and the available literature. Reflection: This article intends to explore the similarities between GI and LPR, how to ultimately differentiate them and how to approach treatment with a broader differential diagnosis. Conclusion: LPR and GI can present with identical, vague throat, and voice symptoms. Empiric medication trials, behavioral interventions and objective laryngovideostroboscopy, impedance-based reflux, and esophageal motility testing may all be needed, sometimes in a trial and error fashion, to correctly diagnose and treat a patient's symptoms.

Brown macroalgae represent one of the most proliferative groups of living organisms in aquatic environments. Due to their abundance, they often cause problems in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, resulting in health problems in humans and the death of various aquatic species. To resolve this, the application of Sargassum has been sought in different research areas, such as food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics, since Sargassum is an easy target for study and simple to obtain. In addition, its high content of biocompounds, such as polysaccharides, phenols, and amino acids, among others, has attracted attention. One of the valuable components of brown macroalgae is their polysaccharides, which present interesting bioactivities, such as antiviral, antimicrobial, and antitumoral, among others. There is a wide variety of methods of extraction currently used to obtain these polysaccharides, such as supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), pressurized liquid extraction (PLE), subcritical water extraction (SCWE), ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), enzyme-assisted extraction (EAE), and microwave-assisted extraction (MAE). Therefore, this work covers the most current information on the methods of extraction, as well as the purification used to obtain a polysaccharide from Sargassum that is able to be utilized as alginates, fucoidans, and laminarins. In addition, a compilation of bioactivities involving brown algae polysaccharides in in vivo and in vitro studies is also presented, along with challenges in the research and marketing of Sargassum-based products that are commercially available.

RESUMO

Over the last 20 years, polysaccharide-based materials have garnered attention in the enhanced efficiency fertilizers (EEFs) research. Biodegradability, non-toxicity, water-solubility, swellability, and ease of chemical modification make these polymers suitable for agricultural applications. In this review, the polysaccharides-based EEFs advances are summarized over the polymer and co-materials selection, the methods, and the chemical/structure aspects necessary for an appropriate production. We also briefly discuss terminologies, nutrient release mechanisms, biodegradation, and future trends. The most used polysaccharides are chitosan, starch, and alginate, and the non-Fickian model most describes the release mechanism. It is dependent on the relaxation of polymer chains by the matrix swelling followed by the nutrient diffusion. EEFs-polymers-based should be designed as more packed and less porous structures to avoid the immediate contact of the fertilizer with the surrounding water, improving fertilizer retention. Furthermore, the preparation methods will determine the scale-up of the material.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the dimensional stability and maintenance of details of conventional and high stability alginates up to 5-day storage. Methods: Two types of alginates were selected (n=10) for this study, conventional (Hydrogum) and high stability alginates (Hydrogum 5), which were produced with the aid of a cylindrical metal block and a ring-shaped metal mold (Specifications 18, 19, and 25, ANSI/ADA). Ten images were obtained from the molds for the dimensional stability test, which were taken immediately after their production and at each different storage periods (15 min, 24 h, 48 h, 72 h, 96 h, and 120 h) by a digital camera. The specimens were kept hermetically sealed in plastic bags (23°C) and then used to obtain 140 (n=70) dental stone models, used in the detail reproduction test, in which the angular accuracy of three grooves (20 µm, 50 µm, and 75 µm) was observed at each period. The details reproduction accuracy was classified using a predetermined score classification. Measurements of dimensional changes were made in the Corel DRAW X6 program. The data were submitted to the Student's t-test (α?#8197;= 0.05). Results: A statistically significant difference concerning the size of the matrix was observed after 24h for both alginates, and a statistically significant negative linear dimensional change (contraction) was verified after 24 h of storage (1.52% for the high stability alginate, and 1.32% for the conventional alginate). The high stability alginate kept the full details for 72 hours, while the conventional alginate, for 24 h. Both alginates reproduced the 75 µm groove at all storage periods. Conclusion: Impressions made with both alginates presented satisfactory clinical results when the alginates were immediately poured.

Purpose:To analyze, histomorphologically, the influence of the geometry of nanostructured hydroxyapatite and alginate (HAn/Alg) composites in the initial phase of the bone repair. Methods:Fifteen rats were distributed to three groups: MiHA - bone defect filled with HAn/Alg microspheres; GrHA - bone defect filled with HAn/Alg granules; and DV - empty bone defect; evaluated after 15 days postoperatively. The experimental surgical model was the critical bone defect, ≅8.5 mm, in rat calvaria. After euthanasia the specimens were embedded in paraffin and stained with hematoxylin and eosin, picrosirius and Masson-Goldners trichrome. Results:The histomorphologic analysis showed, in the MiHA, deposition of osteoid matrix within some microspheres and circumjacent to the others, near the bone edges. In GrHA, the deposition of this matrix was scarce inside and adjacent to the granules. In these two groups, chronic granulomatous inflammation was noted, more evident in GrHA. In the DV, it was observed bone neoformation restricted to the bone edges and formation of connective tissue with reduced thickness in relation to the bone edges, throughout the defect. Conclusion:The geometry of the biomaterials was determinant in the tissue response, since the microspheres showed more favorable to the bone regeneration in relation to the granules.(AU)

RESUMO

Objective: To evaluate the dimensional changes in three types of alginate following three different delay times after casting. Material and Methods: In this laboratory study, a maxillary arch-shaped stainless steel model was prepared and three pins with similar and determined diameters and heights were placed (one at mid-line and two on the underside of the model) as reference points to compare the dimensional stability of the three types of alginates. A special metal tray was made from the main model. The main moldel was imprisoned by the metal tray, and these were kept for a specific time in a humid environment. Gypsum Type 4 was poured over the impression to obtain 90 gypsum casts for three types of alginate. The dimensions of casts obtained from each alginate were compared in two lateral and anterior-posterior dimensions, they were compared with each other, and the alginates were also compared to the main model. Results: At a time interval of 15 minutes, the dimensional accuracy of the casts obtained from the three types of alginates, with the main model in both anterior-posterior and transverse dimensions was not significantly different (p<0.05); but there was a significant difference at 60 minutes and 24 hours in both dimensions (p<0.05). Although there was no significant difference between the alginates in both dimensions and all three studied time periods, the least difference with the main model was related to Zhermack and the highest difference was related to Golchai alginates. Pairwise comparisons showed that none of the samples had a significant difference in terms of dimensions. Conclusion: The dimensional stability of alginate was a time-dependent type of alginate and had no significant effect on the dimensional accuracy of casts.

National Institutes of Health; DI).

Abstract Introduction Recently, some extended-pour alginate impression materials have been placed in the market. However, there is no consensus in the literature regarding the dimensional stability of these materials during these storage. Objective To evaluate, through the experimental model, the durability and velocity with respect to dimensional alteration, analyzing the material and detecting distortions. Material and method The material for molding in this test was alginate (Hydrogum 5, Zhermack). A cylindrical metallic matrix was used to make the moldings with: 38 mm of external diameter, 30 mm of internal diameter and superior of the upper series of the card 3d transport lines with each 25 mm in length and 20, 50 and 75μm in width. After the time of jellification / polymerization of the molding material, 16 molds were inserted in a doser and were photographed with a digital camera (Canon EOS Rebel 3Ti, Canon) associated with a software for analysis of sacred images (ImageJ 1.52a, US National Institutes of Health, DI). The calibration of the ruler was performed in 10 cm and then in 3 lines were means 3 (three) times to obtain a mean of the lengths of the lines. The photographs were taken at the following intervals: immediately, 24, 48, 72, 96 and 120 hours after being cast. Result The data were found when compared with the other parts of the reading time (p <0.001) and when compared to the execution after 24 hours of locomotion with the other parts of the time (p <0.001). The rest time of 48 hours, 72 hours, 96 hours and 120 hours were compared to each other. Conclusion The molds of the tested alginates can be stored for 5 days in 100% relative sauce.

Brown algae biomass has been shown to be a highly important industrial source for the production of alginates and different nutraceutical products. The characterization of this biomass is necessary in order to allocate its use to specific applications according to the chemical and biological characteristics of this highly variable resource. The methods commonly used for algae characterization require a long time for the analysis and rigorous pretreatments of samples. In this work, nondestructive and fast analyses of different morphological structures from Lessonia spicata and Macrocystis pyrifera, which were collected during different seasons, were performed using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) techniques in combination with chemometric methods. Mid-infrared (IR) and near-infrared (NIR) spectral ranges were tested to evaluate the spectral differences between the species, seasons, and morphological structures of algae using a principal component analysis (PCA). Quantitative analyses of the polyphenol and alginate contents and the anti-oxidant capacity of the samples were performed using partial least squares (PLS) with both spectral ranges in order to build a predictive model for the rapid quantification of these parameters with industrial purposes. The PCA mainly showed differences in the samples based on seasonal sampling, where changes were observed in the bands corresponding to polysaccharides, proteins, and lipids. The obtained PLS models had high correlation coefficients (r) for the polyphenol content and anti-oxidant capacity (r > 0.9) and lower values for the alginate determination (0.7 < r < 0.8). Fourier transform infrared-based techniques were suitable tools for the rapid characterization of algae biomass, in which high variability in the samples was incorporated for the qualitative and quantitative analyses, and have the potential to be used on an industrial scale.

The aim of this study was to compare, through three-dimensional measurements, stone casts obtained by two preliminary impression techniques: compound (CG) and double-alginate (AG) impression. for this purpose, a metal pattern model with three cylinders positioned in the left (A) and right (B) molars and incisal papilla (C) regions was used. for CG, conventional impression with plasticized material between 60-65°C was carried out. for AG, the equalized minimum pressure technique was used with the first impression taken according to the proportion indicated by the manufacturer, and the second with 25% increase in the water quantity. To evaluate the distortion, the stone casts of each group were submitted to three-dimensional measurements in equipment by coordinates (n=10/group). The leveling plane was considered at the top of the three cylinders, and the center of origin by A and B cylinders symmetry, which allowed measurement of the distance between the cylinders (AB and BC), diameter of each cylinder (A, B and C) and palate height. The data were evaluated by two-way ANOVA and Tukey tests (α=0.05). There was influence on the interaction of impression material and location of the measurements (p0.05) between the groups, CG resulted in greater dimensional change in the measurements of A, B and C diameters. CG and AG did not differ in dimensional stability, thus being considered clinically feasible techniques.

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease of the articular cartilage that affects mainly elder people from 60 years old. Its degeneration is slow and progressive, causing pain and decreasing quality of life of patients affected by the disease. Currently, the treatment of the disease is merely palliative resulting in surgery for complete removal of the knee articular capsule and substituting it for a prosthesis. This study evaluated the characteristics of chondrocytes encapsulated by a sodium alginate hydrogel, which simulates a unique microenvironment of these cells. We evaluated the viability of chondrocytes cultured for 28 days in this model, as well as the presence of proteoglycan for histological analysis. Through scanning electron microscopy, we observed significant differences in the internal microenvironment of the hydrogel and chondrocytes disposition when cultured for up to 28 days in sodium alginate drop. We also analyzed the deformability of sodium alginate bead when pressed in order to observe how much it supports until it breaks. Our data indicate that sodium alginate hydrogel is an effective model to culture chondrocytes and allows us to study its morpho-histological characteristics. Moreover, we observed that this biomaterial can be very promising for tissue bioengineering

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to evaluate the linear dimensional stability of different irreversible hydrocolloid materials over time. A metal mold was designed with custom trays made of thermoplastic sheets (Sabilex, sheets 0.125 mm thick). Perforations were made in order to improve retention of the material. Five impressions were taken with each of the following: Kromopan 100 (LASCOD) [AlKr], which has dimensional stability of 100 hours, and Phase Plus (ZHERMACK) [AlPh], which has dimensional stability of 48 hours. Standardized digital photographs were taken at different time intervals (0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 120 minutes; 12, 24 and 96 hours), using an "ad-hoc" device. The images were analyzed with software (UTHSCSA Image Tool) by measuring the distance between intersection of the lines previously made at the top of the mold. The results were analyzed by ANOVA for repeated measures. Initial and final values were (mean and standard deviation): AlKr: 16.44 (0.22) and 16.34 (0.11), AlPh: 16.40 (0.06) and 16.18 (0.06). Statistical evaluation showed significant effect of material and time factors. Under the conditions in this study, time significantly affects the linear dimensional stability of irreversible hydrocolloid materials.
