Visual impairment is considered a sensory disability that can hinder learning to maintain oral health, among other issues, due to lack of preventive care and guidance using appropriate materials. This work aims to demonstrate the elaboration of an Illustrated Tactile Booklet (ITB) with guidelines on oral health for People with Visual Impairment (PVI). For the preparation of such material, preexisting macromodels, materials for dental use associated with others found in stationery stores were used. From these materials it was possible to make a prototype of ITB, which is an unprecedented material for oral health education for the PVI.

Objective: to investigate the perception of body weight and the difficulties encountered by people with visual impairments in acquiring, preparing and consuming food. Methodology: cross-sectional observational study, with adults and elderly people with visual impairment in Pelotas/RS, carried out from April to May 2023. A questionnaire composed of 42 items was used. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive and analytical analysis, and presented as mean ± standard deviation or percentage. Results: the sample included 20 people, predominantly female and elderly. Regarding food consumption, 50% of participants consume beans, 75% fruits and vegetables, 50% sweetened drinks, stuffed cookies and sweets. Regarding the perception of body weight, it was noticed that the majority of the group feels that they are overweight and feel "dissatisfied". Regarding the difficulties encountered, 85% of participants reported extreme difficulty in identifying the expiration date of food, 70% in purchasing fresh and perishable foods and 40% in using a knife to cut and peel food. Conclusion: it was found that the majority of the group feels that they are overweight and are "dissatisfied" with their body weight. Furthermore, they depend on someone else to choose the food to be purchased, know the expiration date, prepare food that needs to be portioned, serve meals on the plate, cut meat, peel vegetables and fruits, use a knife, among others. This dependence can directly influence their food consumption when these people are alone, choosing to consume easily prepared or ready-made processed foods.

RESUMO

The inconsistency in terminology for Cortical Visual Impairment or Cerebral Visual Impairment presents challenges: (1) different levels of changes in visual pathway and other cerebral areas do not allow discrimination; (2) different visual and oculomotor aspects are not adequately considered. We open a debate to consider a more appropriate diagnosis.

RESUMO

Purpose: To assess long-term visual and neurodevelopmental outcomes in children with congenital Zika syndrome (CZS) after strabismus surgery. Methods: A consecutive sample of five children with CZS who underwent strabismus surgery was enrolled. All children underwent a standardized pre- and postoperative protocol including binocular best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) using the Teller Acuity Cards II (TAC II), ocular alignment, functional vision using the functional vision developmental milestones test (FVDMT), and neurodevelopmental milestone evaluation using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development-Third Edition (BSID-III). Scores of the FVDMT outcomes considering the child's developmental age based on the BSID-III score were compared with scores from postoperative assessment. Results: Five children with CZS (3 girls, 2 boys) were enrolled with a mean age at baseline (preoperative) of 35.0 ± 0.7 months (range, 34-36 months) and at final assessment of 64.4 ± 0.5 months (range, 64-65 months). Preoperative BCVA was 1.2 ± 0.5 logMAR and at final assessment 0.7 ± 0.1 logMAR. Successful strabismus surgery outcome was maintained in 4/5 (80.0%) of children at final assessment. The children's BSID-III scores showed significant neurodevelopment delay at the initial assessment (corresponding developmental mean age was 4.7 months) and at their final assessment (corresponding developmental mean age was 5.1 months). There was improvement or stability in 34/46 items evaluated in the FVDMT (73.9%) when comparing baseline with 2-year follow-up. Conclusions: Strabismus surgery resulted in long-term ocular alignment in the majority of children with CZS. All the children showed improvement or stability in more than 70.0% of the functional vision items assessed. Visual and neurodevelopmental dysfunction may be related to complex condition and associated disorders seen in CZS including ocular, neurological, and skeletal abnormalities.

RESUMO

Ocular chemical burns are a significant cause of visual impairment. This study aims to characterize the ocular chemical burns in a southwestern Colombia referral center and identify associated factors with low vision. A retrospective cohort study was carried out based on the review of medical records of patients diagnosed with chemical eye burns who consulted the emergency ophthalmology service between January 2016 and December 2019. Descriptive statistics were performed. Associations with low vision (Best-Corrected Visual Acuity, ≥20/70 in Snellen chart) in the last follow-up appointment were identified using a multivariate logistic regression with odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). About 219 eyes affected by chemical burns were identified from 174 patients with a mean age of 39 years (SD ± 20), of which 57.5% (n = 100) were men. We ran a multivariate model adjusted by sex, eye wash, type of chemical, and Dua's classification. We found that the odds of low vision for patients without eyewash before the consult were 3 times the odds of those who had it (adjusted OR [aOR] = 3.5, 95% CI = 1.3-9.4) and almost 5 times for those with Dua's classification >1 (aOR = 4.7, 95% CI = 1.7-12.9). The ocular chemical burns reported in this study occurred more in young people of productive age. Acids were the principal causal agent. The association between lack of early management and the severity of the chemical burn with low vision has been highlighted. Ocular burns remain a relevant cause of consultation on the ophthalmology service in Cali, and prevention strategies are required.

RESUMO

The plastination technique produces non-toxic human tissues, ensuring their safe handling in educational settings. This investigation aimed to understand if visually impaired students profit from the use of plastinated anatomical specimens in learning the anatomy of the nervous system. For this purpose, their learning performance was compared to sighted and blindfolded students recruited from three primary schools in Fortaleza city, in the state of Ceará. Initially, a questionnaire was applied before carrying out the pedagogical practice, followed by an anatomy lecture with practical components with the use of plastinated anatomical specimens and synthetic anatomical models of the nervous system. After these steps, the students answered the questionnaire previously applied. Our results showed that the tactile perception of the visually impaired participants was significantly more developed compared to sighted (p < 0.001) and the blindfolded (p < 0.0001) students. The average of correct answers in the reapplied questionnaire was higher in the groups that used plastinated specimens (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the use of plastinated specimens has proven to be an effective tool in promoting a better understanding of anatomical structures, mainly for students with or without visual impairments, making it a valuable asset in anatomy teaching.

Abstract: Caring for a visually impaired child can affect the caregiver's income and, in turn, the family's. Catastrophic spending resulting from increased expenses and reduced income must be taken into account, whether due to unemployment, a reduction in the number of hours worked or the difficulty of entering or reentering the job market. Given this scenario, the main objective of this study was to estimate the catastrophic spending attributed to the caregiver of blind or low-vision children in reference centers for education for the blind, ophthalmology and child health located in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, identifying which factors are associated with a higher or lower prevalence of this expenditure. It was found that 53.3% of care for blind children involved 40% or more of their income. Among the caregivers of children with low vision, catastrophic spending is milder, compromising at least 40% of income for 36.8% of the caregivers. The factors associated with a higher prevalence of catastrophic spending were the caregiver's age, the number of residents in the household, higher schooling, lower household income, renovations to the home, health insurance, taking out loans, selling assets, the number of health units where the child receives treatment and the relationship of the main caregiver. The burden placed on caregivers of visually impaired children indicates a situation of vulnerability that shows the need for access to financial and social protection mechanisms, through policies that are capable of serving this group.

Proptosis of the eyeball is one of the common consequences of trauma and enucleation is the procedure of choice if it is impossible to reverse the condition. There are few reports of enucleation of the eyeball resulting from traumatic proptosis, which makes it important to describe this case, which aims to provide relevant information and contributions to the development of ophthalmology and veterinary surgical practice. A female puppy was seen at the HVU - UFPI/CPCE, presenting with a prolapsed right eyeball. Enucleation was selected due to the prolonged interval between detecting the lesion and seeking medical assistance, the presence of a high foreign body burden and the absence of pupillary reflexes. Surgery began with canthotomy followed by dissection of the eyeball muscles. The blood vessels and optic nerve were clamped and the eyeball was resected. After an invaginating ligature and reduction of the dead space, the eyelid edges were removed and blepharorrhaphy was performed. Around 40 days after enucleation, the dog was stable and had satisfactory healing of the surgical wound. This procedure was carried out in a similar way to that seen in the literature, although enucleation is mostly recommended for conditions other than traumatic proptosis.(AU)

ABSTRACT: Even with advances related to the inclusion of the Target Group of Learners of Special Education in common classes, especially since 2000, there are still barriers that make the permanence of these students in learning environments difficult, such as the lack of teacher training and materials suited to their real needs. In this regard, this research aimed to gather and systematize, through a literature review, accessible Mathematics materials for students with visual impairments, in order to assist educators in preparing classes that are more accessible to this audience. Data analysis was performed using the Iramuteq software. In total, 26 works were found, including articles, Ph.D. dissertations and Master's thesis produced between 2012 and 2022, that developed and applied accessible materials to students with visual impairments in Basic Education. The results point out that, in addition to the low production of materials over the past years, the pieces of work are focused on the final grades of Elementary School and High School, and the most covered topics refer to the thematic units of Geometry and Algebra. Thus, a deficit of materials for Early Childhood Education and the initial grades of Elementary Education was identified, in addition to the little production for other Mathematics thematic units.

ABSTRACT Mothers and fathers with visual impairments may have difficulty introducing their children to food. In this way, an Assistive Technology (AT) was developed on this topic. The objective, therefore, was to validate the AT on infant food introduction. This is a methodological study according to the adaptation of the Pasquali's (2010) model. The AT was previously constructed and evaluated by experts and through a pilot testing with the target population. The present study considered the empirical pole, through which the AT was assessed by a new and broad group of mothers and fathers. Everyone responded to an instrument in a Lickert scale format regarding the content, pedagogical aspects and accessibility of AT. Furthermore, the study also included an analytical pole through statistical analysis of the data. The ethical aspects of research involving human beings were respected. Eighty-nine mothers and fathers participated, mainly women (53.9%), with congenital visual impairment (55.1%), with average age of 37.91 years old, not married (52.8%), with secondary education (60.7% ) and carrying out paid work (56.2%). Among the technology topics, all presented favorable averages, with content being best evaluated (91.1±11.7), followed by online access (84.4±18.9) and pedagogical aspects (82.9±15.9). The AT is a valid means of disseminating information to mothers and fathers with visual impairments.

RESUMO

Visual impairment and blindness are a growing public health problem as they reduce the life quality of millions of people. The management and treatment of these diseases represent scientific and therapeutic challenges because different cellular and molecular actors involved in the pathophysiology are still being identified. Visual system components, particularly retinal cells, are extremely sensitive to genetic or metabolic alterations, and immune responses activated by local insults contribute to biological events, culminating in vision loss and irreversible blindness. Several ocular diseases are linked to retinal cell loss, and some of them, such as retinitis pigmentosa, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy, are characterized by pathophysiological hallmarks that represent possibilities to study and develop novel treatments for retinal cell degeneration. Here, we present a compilation of revisited information on retinal degeneration, including pathophysiological and molecular features and biochemical hallmarks, and possible research directions for novel treatments to assist as a guide for innovative research. The knowledge expansion upon the mechanistic bases of the pathobiology of eye diseases, including information on complex interactions of genetic predisposition, chronic inflammation, and environmental and aging-related factors, will prompt the identification of new therapeutic strategies.

RESUMO

Visual impairment (VI) negatively affects a child's quality of life. The prevalence of VI in the Caribbean is nearly three times higher than in the United States, but the causes remain uncertain. This study leverages Barbados' unique eye care system to survey the eye diseases and VI prevalence in Barbadian children. Medical records of all patients aged <19 years who received ophthalmic care in Barbados' two public eye care centers between January and December 2019 were reviewed, capturing the entirety of public pediatric eye care within the study period. Age at the first visit to the clinic and at the final visit in 2019, sex, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), past medical history, and clinical diagnoses were extracted and analyzed. VI was defined as a BCVA of 6/12 or worse in the better-seeing eye. There were 3278 patient records with a mean age at the first visit of 7.8 ± 3.9 years. There were 80 (2.4%) children with VI, 62.5% of which were attributed to amblyopia. A total of 94% of VI was preventable or treatable. The most common diagnoses were refractive error (87.5%), strabismus (27.5%), and allergic eye disease (20.0%). Amblyopia is the major cause of pediatric VI in Barbados and is largely avoidable.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Collaborative interventions, involving partnerships between professionals and families, make it possible to actively engage families in the rehabilitation process. However, no study was found that used a physiotherapy intervention via telehealth for infants with Down syndrome (DS). OBJECTIVE: Describe the case report of a family-professional collaborative intervention via telehealth for an infant with Down syndrome and visual impairment during the COVID-19 pandemic. CASE DESCRIPTION: A male infant five months old participated in a collaborative intervention for a period of eight weeks. Three goals were set with the family, and a goal-oriented home program, involving visual stimulation strategies, was organized. OUTCOMES: Two goals were achieved. The family scored changes in performance and satisfaction with the infant's performance according to the adapted Canadian Occupational Performance Measure. Improvement of motor skills was verified by Alberta Infant Motor Scale and changes in mobility and daily activities performance were measured by the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory - Computer Adaptive Test. CONCLUSION: The use of family-professional collaborative intervention via telehealth during the COVID-19 pandemic shows promising results for achieving the goals established by the family collaboratively with the physical therapists.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Data on visual impairment (VI) in patients with diabetes are necessary in order to guide economic and human resources for reducing its prevalence. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy-related VI in patients with type 2 diabetes in a hospital-based setting. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Cross-sectional study carried out from 2014 to 2019 in an ophthalmology outpatient clinic. Any VI was defined as corrected pin-hole visual acuity in the better eye of ≥ 0.24 logMAR. The presence of diabetic retinopathy (DR), diabetic macular edema (DME) and cataract was evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 840 patients were included; median diabetes duration was 15 years. The prevalence of VI was 30%. DR was found in 62% of patients (30% had sight-threatening DR [STDR]), 17% had referable DME, and 3%, cataracts. The odds ratio for moderate or worse VI was 9.02 for STDR (p < 0.001), 5.89 for referable DME (p = 0.001), and 2.51 for cataract (p = 0.006). CONCLUSION: Thirty percent of participants had some degree of VI. Moderate or worse VI showed a strong association with STDR and referable DME.

PURPOSE: To investigate disparities in the prevalence and causes of visual impairment and blindness, cataract surgical coverage, and ocular findings in older adults from two Brazilian geo-socio-demographic areas, São Paulo and Parintins cities. METHODS: Data from two population-based studies including participants 50 years and older from the cities of São Paulo (São Paulo Eye Study - SPES, 2004) and Parintins (Brazilian Amazon Region Eye Survey - BARES, 2014) were aggregated. RESULTS: A total of 5318 participants (3677 from SPES;1641 from BARES) were included. The prevalence of severe visual impairment (SVI) and blindness were, respectively, 0.74% (0.46-1.02) and 0.77% (0.48-1.05) in SPES and 1.72% (1.09-2.35) and 3.44% (2.55-4.33) in BARES. SVI and blindness were associated with BARES study [OR = 2.27 (1.30-3.95); p = .004 - SVI] [OR:4.07 (2.51-6.60); p < .001- blindness]; and older age [OR = 10.93 (4.20-28.45); p < .001 - SPES; OR = 17.96 (8.75-36.83); p < .001 - BARES] while higher education level was a protective factor [OR = 0.21 (0.05-0.95) - SPES; p = .042; OR = 0.21 (0.05-0.91); p = .037 - BARES]. Cataract was the main cause of bilateral severe visual impairment (25.93% in SPES and 64.29% in BARES) and bilateral blindness (21.43% in SPES and 35.71% in BARES). Cataract surgical coverage was significantly lower in BARES (36.32%) compared to SPES (57.75%). CONCLUSION: The prevalence of SVI and blindness was three times higher in older adults from the Brazilian Amazon compared to those living in São Paulo city, despite a 10-year interval between the two studies. These disparities should be mitigated by initiatives to promote access to eye care services targeting underprivileged and remote Brazilian areas.

RESUMO

Despite the obvious morphological differences in the visual system, zebrafish share a similar architecture and components of the same embryonic origin as humans. The zebrafish retina has the same layered structure and cell types with similar metabolic and phototransduction support as humans, and is functional 72 h after fertilization, allowing tests of visual function to be performed. The zebrafish genomic database supports genetic mapping studies as well as gene editing, both of which are useful in the ophthalmological field. It is possible to model ocular disorders in zebrafish, as well as inherited retinal diseases or congenital or acquired malformations. Several approaches allow the evaluation of local pathological processes derived from systemic disorders, such as chemical exposure to produce retinal hypoxia or glucose exposure to produce hyperglycemia, mimicking retinopathy of prematurity or diabetic retinopathy, respectively. The pathogenesis of ocular infections, autoimmune diseases, or aging can also be assessed in zebrafish larvae, and the preserved cellular and molecular immune mechanisms can be assessed. Finally, the zebrafish model for the study of the pathologies of the visual system complements certain deficiencies in experimental models of mammals since the regeneration of the zebrafish retina is a valuable tool for the study of degenerative processes and the discovery of new drugs and therapies.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To describe the main retinal alterations detected by non-mydriatic retinal camera screening and to evaluate factors related to referral to ophthalmology in a population at high cardiovascular risk in Palmira, Colombia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cross-sectional observational study, which included 11,983 photographic imaging records of patients with hypertension and diabetes mellitus from Gesencro's S.A.S. comprehensive chronic disease care program between 2018 and 2020. Risk factors associated to referral to ophthalmology were evaluated with logistic regression, and crude and adjusted ORs (odds ratios) were obtained. RESULTS: A total of 11,880 records were analyzed; 67.7±12years old, and 69.5% were women. Among the retinal alterations were patients with diabetic retinopathy classified as more than mild in 10% and gradeI hypertensive retinopathy in 54.9% right eye, 51.9% left eye. Macular edema was also identified. Only 2069 patients (17.4%) required referral to ophthalmology, and for imaging control 82.6%. In the multivariate analysis, the risk factors associated with the probability of being referred were male gender, age 60years and older, glycosylated hemoglobin out-of-target, advanced chronic kidney disease and the microalbumin-to-creatinine ratio moderate to severely elevated. CONCLUSION: This study makes it possible to determine the importance of screening with a non-mydriatic retinal camera in patients at high cardiovascular risk to detect retinal abnormalities and assess risk factors associated with referral to ophthalmology. Early documentation of ocular compromise in these patients could prevent and avoid visual impairment and blindness.
