RESUMO

This article presents the capture protocol to acquire hyperspectral images, which can be used to quantify the concentration of total phosphorus in soil samples. 152 soil samples were prepared, and a hyperspectral cube made up of 145 images in the VIS-NIR bands, between 420 and 1000 nm, was obtained from each of them. The images obtained were taken with the Bayspec OCIF Series hyperspectral camera, in push-broom function, using a platform that includes an illumination system that offers a continuous spectrum in the range of interest. The samples were prepared with a soil from the Santander de Quilichao region, Cauca, Colombia, and mixed with known concentrations of P2O5 fertilizer, so that a total mass of 50 g was obtained. Each sample was deposited in a round black plastic container, 6 cm in diameter and a depth of 1 cm. The soil samples were analyzed in the laboratory to establish the concentration of total phosphorus. Therefore, the database is made up of the images associated with the hyperspectral cube of each sample, and four tables: the first describes the properties of the soil used to obtain the mixtures, the second the composition of the fertilizer used, the third describes the soil-fertilizer ratio to make up the samples, and the fourth was the laboratory analysis of the total phosphorus content of the analyzed samples.

RESUMO

The goal of the study was to illustrate how the variation in streamflow patterns affects the magnitude of pollutants that can be loaded into the hydrography in a more straightforward manner. For that, two basins in the Doce River basin (Brazil) were evaluated in order to estimate the variation in the allowed wastewater in streamflow units (m3s-1) into the hydrography without impairing the rivers' water quality. The main water quality parameters of the basin were considered for the analysis: E. coli, total phosphorus (P), nitratenitrogen (N-NO3-), and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD). Because the already existing E. coli in the system is too high, the allowable streamflow, considering this pollutant, was null. For N-NO3-, the model was not valid because the concentration of it the wastewater is smaller than the allowed in the legislation. For last, considering P and BOD, it was observed that, for most gauges, it was possible to load more wastewater in the hydrography during wet months, especially when the effluent goes through some treatment. For example, considering P, a significant difference between the allowable pollutants in the wet season in comparison to the dry season, indicating that for one gauge, more wastewater is allowed in the dryer season. For BOD, contrarily, the allowable wastewater in the hydrography increased by about 50% in both seasons, without much variation. With that, we conclude that the dilution capacity in the waters is variable, so should be the allowed amount of pollutants into the river network throughout the year.

RESUMO

The dynamics of total phosphorus (TP) in 18 strategic reservoirs of the high-density reservoir network of the Brazilian semiarid was evaluated during the wet and dry periods for the past 12 years. Seasonal overlying concentrations presented no significant differences for about 90% of the reservoirs (p>0.05). This was attributed to a trade-off between the hydrological/limnological processes occurring in the two seasons. Then, a transient complete-mix mass balance model was applied with particular adaptations for the tropical semiarid reservoirs to estimate the TP load for each season. Because of the relatively well-mixed conditions and high hypolimnetic dissolved oxygen concentrations during the wet season, the wet load was assumed to represent the external TP load. On the other hand, because of the absence of reservoir inflow during the dry season, phosphorus release under anoxic sediment conditions and wind-induced resuspension under shallow water depths, the dry load was assumed to reflect the internal TP load. The maximum external loads were related to peak inflows, notably after drought periods. Consistently, the largest internal loads were obtained during the drought periods, when the reservoirs were shallower and more prone to phosphorus release and resuspension. By comparing the impact of the two input load types, the wet period load was predominant in 72% of the reservoirs. The areal phosphorus loads ranged from 0.66 to 7.29 gP m2 year-1, which were consistent with the literature, despite the very high density of reservoirs. Finally, power-law curves including data for all studied reservoirs were adjusted between the dry period load and volume, dry and wet period loads, wet period load and inflow, and total load and catchment area, resulting in satisfactory R2 (0.84-0.98).

RESUMO

This work seeks to discuss the presence of phosphorus in raw sewage considering the formulation of the powder detergent for cleaning fabrics currently sold in Brazil. Based on the results of laboratory analyses performed in the sewage inflows to three wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) located in São Paulo state, it evaluates the different fractions of this element and sizes the impact caused by the product. The average concentration of total phosphorus (total-P) in sewage inflows has shown a reduction trend over the years, and it is currently between 5.3 and 7.6 mg/L. The participation of organic phosphorus (org-P) tends to be higher than that of the inorganic phosphorus (inorg-P) with average around 64% of total-P. This situation indicates a change from the default and it may be influenced by the reduced contribution of phosphorus in the powder detergents. It was concluded that the formulation of the Brazilian products, which have a very low phosphate content, less than 0.01% by weight, may have altered the phosphorus dynamics in sewage. In other respects, results have shown the need to enhance actions aimed at controlling the sources of phosphorus in sewage, with a view to assure preventive measures to water pollution processes.

RESUMO

Nutrient enrichment in streams due to land use is increasing globally, reducing water quality and causing eutrophication of downstream fresh and coastal waters. In temperate developed countries, the intensive use of fertilizers in agriculture is a main driver of increasing nutrient concentrations, but high levels and fast rates of urbanization can be a predominant issue in some areas of the developing world. We investigated land use in the highly urbanized tropical State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We collected total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and inorganic nutrient data from 35 independent watersheds distributed across the State and characterized land use at a riparian and entire watershed scales upstream from each sample station, using ArcGIS. We used regression models to explain land use influences on nutrient concentrations and to assess riparian protection relationships to water quality. We found that urban land use was the primary driver of nutrient concentration increases, independent of the scale of analyses and that urban land use was more concentrated in the riparian buffer of streams than in the entire watersheds. We also found significant thresholds that indicated strong increases in nutrient concentrations with modest increases in urbanization reaching maximum nutrient concentrations between 10 and 46% urban cover. These thresholds influenced calculation of reference nutrient concentrations, and ignoring them led to higher estimates of these concentrations. Lack of sewage treatment in concert with urban development in riparian zones apparently leads to the observation that modest increases in urban land use can cause large increases in nutrient concentrations.

The input of nutrients is a major problem related to artificial reservoirs. The Capibaribe river, specifically the upstream the Jucazinho reservoir, is the destination of domestic sewer and industrial effluents. These effluents, when discharged without proper treatment, generate a series of disturbances in the water body, later arriving at Jucazinho reservoir, causing even bigger problems such as eutrophication. This paper describes the methodology and the results obtained with the formulation of a model representing the phosphorus load accumulated in reservoir Jucazinho from measured data of total phosphorus throughout the water column. The study allowed us to estimate the average contribution of phosphorus as well as the reduction percentage of this element since the release of effluents into Capibaribe river upstream the reservoir, providing support for planning the operation of this water source.

The objective of the present study was to investigate the influence of domestic sewage on the water along the Camandocaia River. The limnological variables analyzed were: pH, turbidity, color, manganese, iron, dissolved oxygen, nitrogen and total phosphorus. The data are discussed in terms of average values, and the Principal Component Analysis was employed. At no point were the oxygen saturation values below 70%, with the exception of point 9 (38.8%). The lowest nitrogen values were detected in points 1 to 3 (0.18 to 0.21 mg L-1) and the highest in points 9 and 10 (1.29 and 1.79 mg L-1); the highest phosphorus value was detected in point 9 (345.5 µg L-1). All variables correlate positively to the principal component 1, with the exception of oxygen saturation. The sum of the two principal components explains 86.6% of total variation found. The water of the river was little impacted by domestic sewage until Amparo. The highest levels of pollution were detected at the end of that city, and the trend was partial self-depuration until confluence with the Jaguary River. Nevertheless, the most polluted point of the river, when compared to other polluted rivers, presented lower pollution levels.
