RESUMO

Asymmetries in swimming can be the result of poor technique or coordination between limbs, reducing the ability to produce propulsive force and increasing resistive drag. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the magnitude and determine the consistency of isokinetic peak torque asymmetries between the angular velocities of in the shoulder joint movements of internal and external rotation, flexion, and extension. Twenty-one competitive swimmers performed concentric actions at 60°/s (3 repetitions) and 180°/s (20 repetitions) in the movements of internal and external rotation, flexion, and extension of the shoulders using an isokinetic dynamometer, with the peak torque and asymmetry index being common metrics across the tests. The results showed a greater magnitude of asymmetry in internal rotation (16.86 vs. 9.86; p = 0.007) and flexion (12.06 vs. 7.35; p = 0.008) at 60 vs. 180°/s, respectively. The agreement levels of the direction of asymmetries between angular velocities were fair to substantial (Kappa: 0.40 to 0.69). Evaluating isokinetic torque in different movements and angular velocities resulted in different levels of asymmetry. Muscle force asymmetries can impact propulsion efficiency and movement coordination during swimming. Understanding muscle asymmetries allows the development of targeted and individualised training programmes to correct strength imbalances.

This study explores the impact of symmetry breaking on the ferromagnetic resonance of Bloch point (BP) nanospheres. Through standard Fourier analysis, we unveil two distinct oscillation mode groups characterized by low and high frequencies, respectively. Our findings emphasize the pivotal role of magnetic volume in shaping resonance amplitudes, providing new insights into the intricate dynamics of BP states. The investigation of geometric parameters reveals a quasi-monotonic decrease in resonance frequencies as a function of the asymmetry degree attributed to symmetry-breaking induced by geometric modifications. Spatial distribution analysis showcases unique resonance frequencies for the upper and lower BP hemispheres, highlighting the nuanced impact of the geometry on mode excitation. As the radius increases, additional modes emerge, demonstrating a compelling relationship between the magnetic volume and frequency. Phase analysis unveils coherent oscillations within each BP hemisphere, offering valuable insights into the rotational directions of the excitation poles. Beyond fundamental understanding, our study opens avenues for innovative applications, suggesting the potential use of nanospheres in advanced magnetic sensing, data storage, and nanoscale spintronic devices.

The establishment of the embryonic dorsoventral axis in Xenopus occurs when the radial symmetry around the egg's animal-vegetal axis is broken to give rise to the typical symmetry of Bilaterians. We have previously shown that the Notch1 protein is ventrally enriched during early embryogenesis in Xenopus laevis and zebrafish and exerts ventralizing activity through ß-Catenin destabilization and the positive regulation of ventral center genes in X. laevis. These findings led us to further investigate when these asymmetries arise. In this work, we show that the asymmetrical distribution of Notch1 protein and mRNA precedes cortical rotation and even fertilization in X. laevis. Moreover, we found that in unfertilized eggs transcripts encoded by the ventralizing gene bmp4 are also asymmetrically distributed in the animal hemisphere and notch1 transcripts accumulate consistently on the same side of the eccentric maturation point. Strikingly, a Notch1 asymmetry orthogonal to the animal-vegetal axis appears during X. laevis oogenesis. Thus, we show for the first time a maternal bias in the distribution of molecules that are later involved in ventral patterning during embryonic axialization, strongly supporting the hypothesis of a dorsoventral prepattern or intrinsic bilaterality of Xenopus eggs before fertilization.

This article presents a concise survey of basic discrete and semi-discrete nonlinear models, which produce two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) solitons, and a summary of the main theoretical and experimental results obtained for such solitons. The models are based on the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) equations and their generalizations, such as a system of discrete Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equations with the Lee-Huang-Yang corrections, the 2D Salerno model (SM), DNLS equations with long-range dipole-dipole and quadrupole-quadrupole interactions, a system of coupled discrete equations for the second-harmonic generation with the quadratic (χ(2)) nonlinearity, a 2D DNLS equation with a superlattice modulation opening mini-gaps, a discretized NLS equation with rotation, a DNLS coupler and its PT-symmetric version, a system of DNLS equations for the spin-orbit-coupled (SOC) binary Bose-Einstein condensate, and others. The article presents a review of the basic species of multidimensional discrete modes, including fundamental (zero-vorticity) and vortex solitons, their bound states, gap solitons populating mini-gaps, symmetric and asymmetric solitons in the conservative and PT-symmetric couplers, cuspons in the 2D SM, discrete SOC solitons of the semi-vortex and mixed-mode types, 3D discrete skyrmions, and some others.

Aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (aaRSs) originated from an ancestral bidirectional gene (mirror symmetry), and through the evolution of the genetic code, the twenty aaRSs exhibit a symmetrical distribution in a 6-dimensional hypercube of the Standard Genetic Code. In this work, we assume a primeval RNY code and the Extended Genetic RNA code type II, which includes codons of the types YNY, YNR, and RNR. Each of the four subsets of codons can be represented in a 4-dimensional hypercube. Altogether, these 4 subcodes constitute the 6-dimensional representation of the SGC. We identify the aaRSs symmetry groups in each of these hypercubes. We show that each of the four hypercubes contains the following sets of symmetries for the two known Classes of synthetases: RNY: dihedral group of order 4; YNY: binary group; YNR: amplified octahedral group; and RNR: binary group. We demonstrate that for each hypercube, the group of symmetries in Class 1 is the same as the group of symmetries in Class 2. The biological implications of these findings are discussed.

Homochirality, the phenomenon by which one of two virtually identical (non-superimposable mirror images) compounds is favored over the other in the chemistry of life, has been regarded as a requisite for the emergence of all living things on earth. Spontaneous mirror symmetry breaking has been proposed to produce the imbalance. Under this framework, Frank presented, in his foundational article "On spontaneous asymmetric synthesis", a simple chemical reaction network that displays spontaneous symmetry breaking for a specific set of reaction rates. Research has since focused on finding more complex and plausible models, each one with its advantages and disadvantages. Nevertheless, finding reaction rate values that make a model exhibit spontaneous symmetry breaking is a complex task, even for specially crafted models. LInear STability ANALysis of CHEmical Mechanism, Listanalchem, is a method and software for the search for appropriate reaction rates. It includes four different algorithms inspired by the analysis of Frank's network. Two classical algorithms are also included in Listanalchem: the Trace-Determinant plane and the Stoichiometric Network Analysis by Bruce Clarke. Listanalchem reads a chemical reaction network from plain text and runs one or more of the available algorithms according to the user selection. Listanalchem is tested and verified by studying classical, modified, and recent models proposed to explain the origin of biological homochirality.•Listanalchem allows a fast and reliable search for instability behavior in chemical mechanisms that pretend to explain spontaneous mirror symmetry breaking.•Listanalchem contains several model examples, including the most cited in the related literature.•Listanalchem is a tool that tests models that pretend to explain the origin of biological homochirality, helps find errors, and aids in designing new models.

Attrition-enhanced chiral symmetry breaking in crystals, known as Viedma deracemization, is a promising method for converting racemic solid phases into enantiomerically pure ones under non-equilibrium conditions. However, many aspects of this process remain unclear. In this study, we present a new investigation into Viedma deracemization using a comprehensive kinetic rate equation continuous model based on classical primary nucleation theory, crystal growth, and Ostwald ripening. Our approach employs a fully microreversible kinetic scheme with a size-dependent solubility following the Gibbs-Thomson rule. To validate our model, we use data from a real NaClO3 deracemization experiment. After parametrization, the model shows spontaneous mirror symmetry breaking (SMSB) under grinding. Additionally, we identify a bifurcation scenario with a lower and upper limit of the grinding intensity that leads to deracemization, including a minimum deracemization time within this window. Furthermore, this model uncovers that SMSB is caused by multiple instances of concealed high-order autocatalysis. Our findings provide new insights into attrition-enhanced deracemization and its potential applications in chiral molecule synthesis and understanding biological homochirality.

In this work, we formulate the following question: How the distribution of aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (aaRSs) went from an ancestral bidirectional gene (mirror symmetry) to the symmetrical distribution of aaRSs in a six-dimensional hypercube of the Standard Genetic Code (SGC)? We assume a primeval RNY code, two Extended Genetic RNA codes type 1 and 2, and the SGC. We outline the types of symmetries of the distribution of aaRSs in each code. The symmetry groups of aaRSs in each code are described, until the symmetries of the SGC display a mirror symmetry. Considering both Extended RNA codes the 20 aaRSs were already present before the Last Universal Ancestor. These findings reveal intricacies in the diversification of aaRSs accompanied by the evolution of the genetic code.

The Dyson index, ß, plays an essential role in random matrix theory, as it labels the so-called "three-fold way" that refers to the symmetries satisfied by ensembles under unitary transformations. As is known, its 1, 2, and 4 values denote the orthogonal, unitary, and symplectic classes, whose matrix elements are real, complex, and quaternion numbers, respectively. It functions, therefore, as a measure of the number of independent non-diagonal variables. On the other hand, in the case of ß ensembles, which represent the tridiagonal form of the theory, it can assume any real positive value, thus losing that function. Our purpose, however, is to show that, when the Hermitian condition of the real matrices generated with a given value of ß is removed, and, as a consequence, the number of non-diagonal independent variables doubles, non-Hermitian matrices exist that asymptotically behave as if they had been generated with a value 2ß. Therefore, it is as if the ß index were, in this way, again operative. It is shown that this effect happens for the three tridiagonal ensembles, namely, the ß-Hermite, the ß-Laguerre, and the ß-Jacobi ensembles.

TEOSINTE BRANCHED1/CYCLOIDEA/PROLIFERATING CELL FACTOR (TCP) transcription factors (TFs) are plant-specific transcriptional regulators exerting multiple functions in plant growth and development. Ever since one of the founding members of the family was described, encoded by the CYCLOIDEA (CYC) gene from Antirrhinum majus and involved in the regulation of floral symmetry, the role of these TFs in reproductive development was established. Subsequent studies indicated that members of the CYC clade of TCP TFs were important for the evolutionary diversification of flower form in a multitude of species. In addition, more detailed studies of the function of TCPs from other clades revealed roles in different processes related to plant reproductive development, such as the regulation of flowering time, the growth of the inflorescence stem, and the correct growth and development of flower organs. In this review, we summarize the different roles of members of the TCP family during plant reproductive development as well as the molecular networks involved in their action.

Postural instability affects motor tasks after a stroke. We investigated the strategies used to maintain balance during quiet standing posture and dynamic tasks in a video game. Sixteen stroke volunteers (12 males, 56 ± 9 years, post-stroke time 35 ± 10 months) and sixteen matched healthy volunteers had their biomechanical data collected to obtain the variables: center of mass, base of support, margin of stability, and weight symmetry. Healthy individuals and stroke patients showed similar dynamic stability. However, they adopted different motor strategies to achieve this: healthy individuals increased their base of support as they progressed to more challenging tasks, and stroke volunteers maintained the same base. The margin of stability of stroke volunteers was correlated with the MiniBEST scale.

Nonlinear piezoelectric materials are raised as a great replacement for devices that require low power consumption, high sensitivity, and accurate transduction, fitting with the demanding requirements of new technologies such as the Fifth-Generation of telecommunications (5G), the Internet of Things (IoT), and modern radio frequency (RF) applications. In this work, the state equations that correctly predict the nonlinear piezoelectric phenomena observed experimentally are presented. Furthermore, we developed a fast methodology to implement the state equations in the main FEM simulation software, allowing an easy design and characterization of this type of device, as the symmetry structures for high-order tensors are shown and explained. The operation regime of each high-order tensor is discussed and connected with the main nonlinear phenomena reported in the literature. Finally, to demonstrate our theoretical deductions, we used the experimental measurements, which presented the nonlinear effects, which were reproduced through simulations, obtaining maximum percent errors for the effective elasticity constants, relative effective permittivity, and resonance frequencies of 0.79%, 2.9%, and 0.3%, respectively, giving a proof of the potential of the nonlinear state equations presented for the unifying of all nonlinear phenomena observed in the piezoelectric devices.

Bilateral index for upper limbs was determined for maximal force, speed and power in 18 male handball players. Variables were individually assessed with a functional electromechanical dynamometer during unilateral and bilateral bench press push-off for 40%, 60%, and 75% of the maximal isometric force. Limb dominance (symmetry indices) and load effects in the bilateral index were analysed. Bilateral index showed a bilateral deficit for power (range = -8.50 to -41.48) and velocity (range = -11.15 to -38.41), that increases with the load (p < 0.05). For maximum force, a bilateral facilitation (range = 2.26-5.57), which did not vary significantly as a function of load, was observed. Symmetry indices showed no association with the bilateral index (40% load: r = 0.45, 60% load: r = 0.05, 75% load: r = 0.39). These results contribute to understanding the phenomenon; however, individual-to-individual observation reflects that caution should be kept when assessing an individual athlete. In conclusion, bilateral deficit or facilitation for bench press depends on the variable considered, whereas its magnitude depends on the load. Moreover, limb dominance does not affect it. This finding must be regarded as a general trend, but a different situation may occur during the assessment of a particular athlete.

SUMMARY: An anthropometric and body composition analysis was conducted on 123 competitive young male football players of different age groups (U13; U15; U17 & U19) with at least 4 years of training load. 3D anthropometric measurement were performed by the NX-16 ([TC]2, 3D body scanner Cary, North Carolina). Body composition was measured by the bioelectrical impedance with InBody 720 (Biospace Ltd.). Anthropometric and body composition characteristics among different age groups and asymmetries between the left and right side of the upper and lower limbs were analysed for treated age groups. The results showed differences in anthropometric and body composition variables among all age groups in all observed variables (Height, Weight, Basal Metabolic Rate, Skeletal Muscle Mass, Body Fat Mass, Percent Body Fat, Abdominal Obesity Degree, Body Mass Index, Body Fat Mass, Skeletal Lean Mass and Fat Free Mass). The results also showed that young football players of age group U13 differed statistically in four (from 7) paired variables (Arm Lean Mass, Leg Lean Mass, Forearm Girth and Calf Girth), U15 in three variables (Upper Arm Girth, Thigh Girth and Calf Girth), U17 in five variables (Arm Lean Mass, Leg Lean Mass, Upper Arm Girth, Forearm Girth and Calf Girth) and U19 in four observed variables (Arm Lean Mass, Leg Lean Mass, Upper Arm Girth and Calf Girth). All of the age groups differed statistically in calf girth paired variables. Puberty time probably had an impact on the results, and in future research more focus should be placed on puberty characteristics variables.


Se realizó un análisis antropométrico y de composición corporal en 123 jugadores de fútbol masculino jóvenes competidores de diferentes grupos de edad (U13, U15, U17 y U19) con al menos 4 años de carga de entrenamiento. La medición antropométrica 3D se realizó con el NX-16 ([TC]2, escáner corporal 3D Cary, Carolina del Norte). La composición corporal se midió mediante la impedancia bioeléctrica con InBody 720 (Biospace Ltd.). Se analizaron las características antropométricas y de composición corporal entre los diferentes grupos de edad y las asimetrías entre los lados izquierdo y derecho de los miembros superiores e inferiores para los grupos de edad tratados. Los resultados mostraron diferencias en las variables antropométricas y de composición corporal entre todos los grupos de edad en todas las variables observadas (Talla, Peso, Tasa Metabólica Basal, Masa Muscular Esquelética, Masa Grasa Corporal, Porcentaje de Grasa Corporal, Grado de Obesidad Abdominal, Índice de Masa Corporal, Masa Grasa Corporal, Masa magra esquelética y Masa libre de grasa). Los resultados también mostraron que los jugadores de fútbol jóvenes del grupo de edad U13 diferían estadísticamente en cuatro (de 7) variables pareadas (masa magra del brazo, masa magra de la pierna, circunferencia del antebrazo y circunferencia de la pantorrilla), U15 en tres variables (circunferencia del brazo superior, circunferencia del muslo y circunferencia del muslo). Circunferencia de la pantorrilla), U17 en cinco variables (Masa magra del brazo, Masa magra de la pierna, Circunferencia del brazo superior, Circunferencia del antebrazo y Circunferencia de la pantorrilla) y U19 en cuatro variables observadas (Masa magra del brazo, Masa magra de la pierna, Circunferencia del brazo superior y Circunferencia de la pierna). Todos los grupos de edad difirieron estadísticamente en las variables pareadas de circunferencia de la pierna. El tiempo de la pubertad probablemente tuvo un impacto en los resultados, y en investigaciones futuras se debe prestar más atención a las variables de las características de la pubertad.

PURPOSE: To measure the changes of the eyebrow's contour after frontalis muscle (FM) contraction. METHODS: Two consecutive pictures of the eyes and frontal region of 36 volunteers (15 men and 21 women) were obtained with the forehead relaxed and upon maximal frontalis muscle contraction. Bézier lines representing the brows' contours, obtained with the ImageJ software, were graphically sampled with a resolution of 0.025 mm. The contours of the relaxed and elevated brows were compared regarding the position of the contour peak (CP), the degree of elevation of brow central point, and the medial and lateral areas outlined between the brow contours before and after frontalis contraction. The asymmetry of the brow contour after FM contraction was calculated by the Naeije formula as (Medial-Lateral)/(Medial + Lateral). A difference of 10% or less between the lateral and medial areas was taken as a cutoff value for symmetrical brow elevation. RESULTS: In 62 (86.1%) of the eyes, the location of the brow's CP was lateral to the brow's midpoint. When the brows were raised, the CP of 60% of the brows was displaced medially and 40% laterally. The motion of the CP with medial displacement (mean = 3.7 mm) was significantly larger than those displaced laterally (mean = 1.9 mm) decreasing the number of brows with lateral peaks from 62 (86.1%) to 54 (75%). No difference was observed between the mean elevation of the central point of the brow for males (7.9 mm (3.2 SD) and females (7.4 mm, 3.0 SD). In 58.3% of the sample, the positional change of the medial and lateral sectors of the brows was symmetrical, and among the 41.7% asymmetrical cases, the elevation of the medial side was higher than the lateral in 66.7% of the brows. CONCLUSIONS: The brow changes during FM contraction concur well with the anatomic data of the FM shape. The contour of most brows is displaced toward the medial direction when the brow is elevated. The pattern of brow shape change is an indication of the FM anatomy and must be carefully analyzed before any procedure involving the FM, such as chemodenervation injections or frontalis slings for blepharoptosis correction.

Background: The present ontogenetic study reveals variations throughout floral development in three morphologically representative species from the genus Tachigali, allowing a better understanding of floral organs diversity, flower symmetry and their homologies, especially in Fabaceae, a diverse family that exhibits a wide variation in floral architecture. Tachigali (Caesalpinioideae) corresponds to an important Neotropical legumes tree genus with 58 species in Brazil. Species of the genus Sclerolobium Vogel were incorporated in its circumscription, increasing the diversity of its floral morphology. Methods: This work aims to perform an ontogenetic study of T. denudata, T. paratyensis and T. spathulipetala, morphologically representative species of Tachigali, in order to describe the floral development and to better comprehend the floral morphology varieties among the species, using scanning electron microscopy. Results: We found the studied species to have floral buds with acropetal and helical development along the inflorescence axis; sepals and petals with helical development, varying the position of the primordia in the bud, according to the different species; stamens with unilateral development and carpel with adaxial curvature. These data correspond to original records of Tachigali ontogeny and contribute to an improved understanding of floral morphology and symmetry with data related to the zygomorphic and early development of the sepals and petals.

The aim of this research was to analyze the facial class, presence of malocclusion, and the mandibular plane and to relate this to the mandibular condyle position. A cross-sectional study in subjects under analysis for orthognathic surgery was done. The mandibular plane, the gonial angle, and the molar class were included to compare the coronal and sagittal position of the condyle and the joint space observed in the CBCT. The measurements were obtained by the same observer at an interval of two weeks. In addition, the Spearman test was performed to determine the correlation using a p value < 0.05 to observe any significant differences. Eighty-nine male and female subjects (18 to 58 years old, 24.6 ± 10.5) were included. In the coronal section, subjects with CIII had a greater mediolateral distance (MLD, p = 0.0001) and greater vertical distance (SID, p = 0.0001) than subjects with CII. In terms of the skeletal class and the mandibular plane, it was observed that subjects in the CII group had a greater mandibular angle (open angle) (p = 0.04) than the CII group and was related to the anterior position of the condyle. The most anterior condylar position was observed in the CII group (p = 0.03), whereas a posterior condylar position was significant in CIII subjects (p = 0.03). We can conclude that the sagittal position of the TMJ was related to the mandibular plane and the skeletal class showing a higher mandibular angle and most anterior position of the condyle in CII subjects and a lower mandibular angle and most posterior position of the condyle in CIII subjects. The implications for surgical treatment have to be considered.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a degenerative neurological disease characterized by gradual loss of cognitive skills and memory. The exact pathogenesis involved still remains unrevealed, but several studies indicate the involvement of an array of different enzymes, underlining the multifactorial character of the disease. Inhibition of these enzymes is therefore a powerful approach in the development of AD treatments, with promising candidates, including acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE), and monoamine oxidase. Interestingly, AChE is the target of a major pesticide family (organophosphates), with several reports indicating an intersection between the pesticide's activity and AD. In this study, various TADDOL derivatives were synthesized and their in vitro activities as AChE/BuChE inhibitors as well as their antioxidant activities were studied. Molecular modeling studies revealed the capability of TADDOL derivatives to bind to AChE and induce inhibition, especially compounds 2b and 3c furnishing IC50 values of 36.78 ± 8.97 and 59.23 ± 5.31 µM, respectively. Experimental biological activities and molecular modeling studies clearly demonstrate that TADDOL derivatives with specific stereochemistry have an interesting potential for the design of potent AChE inhibitors. The encouraging results for compounds 2b and 3c indicate them as promising scaffolds for selective and potent AChE inhibitors.

The aim of this study was to determine paired asymmetries (right-left) in the autopods of bovine hindlimbs using geometric morphometry (GM). A total of 28 hindlimb right-left matched autopods belonging to healthy Brown Pyrenean calves were assessed. Dorsoplantar radiographs were obtained for each autopod. The bone shape was compared on right and left pairs by means of GM techniques, using a set of 15 landmarks. The results suggest that right and left distal limbs are, despite a perceived resemblance of symmetry, differently directionally developed in shape, with right hindlimbs tending to supinate (rotate outwards) and left hindlimbs tending to pronate (rotate inwards). This unevenness is probably related to the mediolateral forces' contribution of each limb in carrying out the tasks of propulsion and control during walking, and/or a consequence of a laterality associated with a lateralized grazing posture. Our findings prompt a new reassessment of the function of each bovine hindlimb during standing and locomotion.
