RESUMO

Chemical pollution caused by synthetic organic chemicals at low concentrations in the environment poses a growing threat to the ecological status of aquatic ecosystems. These chemicals are regularly released into surface waters through both treated and untreated effluents from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), agricultural runoff, and industrial discharges. Consequently, they accumulate in surface waters, distribute amongst environmental compartments according to their physicochemical properties, and cause adverse effects on aquatic organisms. Unfortunately, there is a lack of data regarding the occurrence of synthetic organic chemicals, henceforth micropollutants, in South American freshwater ecosystems, especially in Chile. To address this research gap, we present a comprehensive dataset comprising concentrations of 153 emerging chemicals, including pesticides, pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs), surfactants, and industrial chemicals. These chemicals were found to co-occur in surface waters within Central Chile, specifically in the River Aconcagua Basin. Our sampling strategy involved collecting surface water samples from streams and rivers with diverse land uses, such as agriculture, urban areas, and natural reserves. For sample extraction, we employed an on-site large-volume solid phase extraction (LVSPE) device. The resulting environmental extracts were then subjected to wide-scope chemical target screening using gas chromatography and liquid chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry (GC- and LC-HRMS). The dataset we present holds significant value in assessing the chemical status of water bodies. It enables comparative analysis of pollution fingerprints associated with emerging chemicals across different freshwater systems. Moreover, the data can be reused for environmental risk assessment studies. Its utilisation will contribute to a better understanding of the impact and extent of chemical pollution in aquatic ecosystems, facilitating the development of effective mitigation strategies.

This work was conducted at the Pardo River hydrographic basin, which is a federal watershed belonging to the Paranapanema River hydrographic basin (PRHB) in Brazil (São Paulo State and Paraná State). The aim was to realize an integrated hydrochemical and radiometric (U-isotopes and 210Po) approach, highlighting the water/soil-rock and surface water/groundwater interactions, with implications to the weathering processes occurring there. The study area has been often considered one of the best preserved/unpolluted river in São Paulo State, contributing to the water supply of several cities distributed along its banks. However, the results reported here suggest possible lead diffuse pollution caused by the use of phosphate fertilizers in agricultural activities taking place in the basin. The analyzed groundwaters and surface waters tend to be neutral to slightly alkaline (pH of 6.8-7.7), possessing low mineral concentration (total dissolved solids up to 500 mg/L). SiO2 is the major dissolved constituent in the waters, while bicarbonate is the dominant anion, and calcium is the preponderant cation. The effects of the weathering of silicates to control the dissolution of constituents in the liquid phase have been identified from some diagrams often utilized in hydrogeochemical studies. Chemical weathering rates have been estimated from hydrochemical data associated to analytical results of the natural uranium isotopes 238U and 234U concerning to samples of rainwater and Pardo River waters. The fluxes in this watershed are permitted to obtain the following rates: 11.43 t/km2 year (sodium), 2.76 t/km2 year (calcium), 3.17 t/km2 year (magnesium), 0.77 t/km2 year (iron), and 8.64 t/km2 year (uranium). This new dataset constitutes valuable information for people engaged on the management of the Pardo River watershed, as well as to researchers interested on comparative studies considering the available data from other basins worldwide.

The widespread use and misuse of antibiotics and pesticides has been linked with several risks to the environment and human health. In the present report, the results of the monitoring of 64 pharmaceuticals and 134 pesticides occurrence in an urban river in Southern Brazil are presented and discussed. Sampling campaigns have covered the period 2016-2018. The identification and determination of the analytes were achieved by high-resolution mass spectrometry. The data were analyzed using chemometric tools to obtain spatial-temporal models. Toxicological evaluation was achieved using acute toxicity (zebrafish standardized protocol), and determination of risk quotient. Within the 198 analytes included in the targeted analysis method for surface water, 33 were identified in an urban river during 2 years of monitoring, being 20 pharmaceuticals and 13 pesticides. Using high-resolution mass spectrometry, a suspect screening approach was established in an un-target analysis. The evaluation was carried out using a data bank built from consumption data of drugs and pesticides, in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre - RS and their respective metabolites. The suspect screening analysis done with a data bank with more than 1450 compounds results in 27 suspect findings. The target analysis results showed a continuous prevalence of non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, analgesics, antipyretics, beta-blockers, corticoids, and antibiotics. Regarding the pesticides, the main classes were fungicides, especially those from triazol and strobilurin classes.

Climate change affects the interactions between water systems, ecosystems, and the atmosphere. It also increases the risk of the presence of microorganisms which affect the systems that use these resources. The impact of the population on the water resources has become more evident in recent years, highlighting the close relationship between the levels of inorganic components and microbiological contamination of water and community health. The characterization of the variables that account for water pollution is a complex process. In this paper, it is proposed to quantified nitrites and phosphorous as chemical markers and fecal coliforms, genomic human adenovirus and/or picobirnavirus and infectious human enterovirus detection as microbiological markers for the prevention of water-borne infections in individuals exposed to superficial aqueous matrices by recreational activities.


El cambio climático afecta a las interacciones entre los sistemas hídricos, los ecosistemas y la atmósfera. También aumenta el riesgo de la presencia de microorganismos que afectan a los sistemas que utilizan estos recursos. El impacto de la población sobre los recursos hídricos se ha hecho más evidente en los últimos años, destacando la estrecha relación entre los niveles de componentes inorgánicos así como la contaminación microbiológica del agua y la salud de la comunidad. La caracterización de las variables que dan cuenta de la contaminación del agua es un proceso complejo. En este trabajo se propone la cuantificación de nitritos y fósforo como marcadores químicos y la detección de coliformes fecales, adenovirus humanos genómicos y/o picobirnavirus y enterovirus humanos infecciosos como marcadores microbiológicos para la prevención de infecciones de origen hídrico en individuos expuestos a matrices acuosas superficiales por actividades recreativas.

Microplastics have been a global concern due to their potential and widespread risks to organisms and environments. In this study, we investigated the abundance, distribution, and characteristics of microplastics (MPs) in the surface waters of the Bahía Blanca Estuary (BBE), specifically in its inner and middle zone. The results showed the dominant shape of MPs were fibers, being black, transparent, and blue the main colors. The concentrations of MPs ranged from 182 to 33,373 items m-3 with a mean value of 6162 items m-3. The highest concentrations of MPs were detected in the middle zone of the estuary, a site that receives untreated sewage effluents from the city. The most abundant size ranges were from 0.5 to 1.5 mm (44.21%) and ˂0.5 mm (40.21%) and were predominant at all the sampling sites. The concentration of mesoplastics in the inner zone (16 items m-3) presented larger values than in the middle zone (5 items m-3). A wide variety of polymeric materials with predominance of microfibers such as cellulose-based, polyacrylonitrile, polyethylene terephthalate, and polypropylene were identified. Polyester/alkyd resins and poli(vinyl chloride) were also found. The analysis of MPs surface through SEM/EDX detected a variety of elements such as C, O, Si, Al, K, Ca, Cl, Ti, Fe, S, and P, indicating potential contaminant carriers in the water column. Some plastic particles presented a high degree of degradation on their surface morphology. Untreated sewage discharges appear to be a significant input of MPs. Therefore, the results provided in the present study should be considered by stakeholders interested in the management and conservation of this large coastal wetland with significant ecological and economic value.

Microplastics (MPs) are emerging and ubiquitous contaminants which have been gaining prominence since the last decade to nowadays. This is due to their possible adverse effects in aquatic ecosystems as well as the huge amount of plastic waste exponentially generated around the globe. Plastics may be introduced either directly to water bodies or indirectly to the aquatic systems by being carried by the wind, from emissions of contaminated effluents, and soil leaching, among other processes. In turn, these debris may interact with organic and inorganic contaminants, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and trace constituents, and with microorganisms. Although the abundance of microplastics from South Atlantic waters is among the highest found worldwide, the number of studies in these marine waters regarding MP contamination is still scarce. Additionally, there still are no consensus on the best sampling conditions, which may be underestimating MPs. In this way, adequate MPs studies regarding their distribution, exposure levels, chemical and biological interactions are highly suggested in order to better understand both environmental and human health potential risks. This review assessed advances in sampling, analytical methodologies, characterization and understanding of MP sources in these marine waters in comparison to data from other regions around the globe.

This study describes the application of gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to evaluate the occurrence of 12 CECs-contaminants of emerging concern (bisphenol A, diclofenac, 17ß-estradiol, estriol, estrone, 17α-ethinylestradiol, gemfibrozil, ibuprofen, naproxen, 4-nonylphenol, 4-octylphenol, and acetaminophen) in surface waters from Paraopeba River Basin, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The analytical procedure was validated and applied to 60 surface water samples collected across four sampling campaigns along the upper and middle watershed. Methods for CECs determination involved sample filtration, and solid-phase extraction (SPE) with subsequent derivatization of the target compounds prior to their analysis by GC-MS. The LOQ varied from 3.6 to 14.4 ng/L and extraction recoveries ranged from 46.1 to 107.1% for the lowest spiked concentration level (10 ng/L). The results showed a profile of spatial distribution of compounds, as well as the influence of rainfall. Ibuprofen (1683.9 ng/L), bisphenol (1587.7 ng/L), and naproxen (938.4 ng/L) occurred in higher concentrations during the rainy season, whereas during the dry season, the concentrations of bisphenol (1057.7 ng/L), estriol (991.0 ng/L), and estrone (978.4 ng/L) were highlighted. The risk assessment of human exposure shows that for most contaminants, the concentration is well below the estimated thresholds for chronic toxicity from water intake. However, estradiol and 17α-ethinylestradiol showed concentrations in the same order of magnitude as the guide values estimated for babies.

Introducción: hoy la humanidad sufre uno de los peores episodios debido a la pandemia causada por el SARS-CoV-2. Su alta infectividad, rápida propagación y persistencia en ciertas superficies dificultan el combate de este virus. Su presencia en aguas residuales y posible transmisión fecal-oral podría ser una nueva amenaza para la salud pública. Objetivo: alertar a la comunidad científica internacional y a los gobiernos sobre la presencia de SARS-CoV-2 en las aguas residuales y sobre qué hacer para evitar su propagación por este medio. Métodos: se realizó una revisión de artículos referenciados en SCOPUS y Web of Science desde el año 2019 relacionados con la presencia del virus en aguas residuales y superficiales. Resultados y discusión: es necesario establecer sistemas de monitoreo, utilizar métodos analíticos sensibles y rápidos para la detección del virus en las aguas residuales y superficiales. Asimismo, implantar protocolos de inactivación del virus en las unidades de salud y en las plantas de tratamiento de aguas. Se recomiendan procesos con oxidantes químicos, radiación ultravioleta, fotocatálisis, foto-Fenton, ozono o filtración por membrana. Además, se debe alertar a la población sobre la importancia del lavado y de la desinfección de productos agrícolas, así como del cuidado en su manejo por parte de los trabajadores agrícolas


Introduction: Today, humanity suffers one of the worst episodes due to a pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2. Its high infectivity and rapid spread combined with its persistence on certain surfaces difficult to fight this virus. Its presence in wastewater and possible fecal-oral transmission could be a new public health threat. Objective: To alert the international scientific community and governments about the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater, and what to do to prevent its spread by this means. Methods: A review of articles referenced in SCOPUS and Web of Science since 2019 related to the presence of the virus in wastewater and surface water was performed. Results and discussion: It is necessary to establish monitoring systems with the use of sensitive and rapid analytical methods for the on-site detection of viruses in wastewaters and surface waters. It should be established virus inactivation protocols at the health units, and water treatment plants, where are recommended processes with chemical oxidants, ultraviolet radiation, photocatalysis, photo-Fenton, ozone, or membrane filtration. It is necessary to alert the population about the importance of washing and disinfecting agricultural products, mainly vegetables and fruits, as well as the care in its handling by agricultural workers

It is known that antibiotics are widely used in human and veterinary medicine. In some countries the use is controlled, however few restrictions to their use are enforced in many countries. Antibiotics and their metabolites can reach the water bodies through sewage systems, especially in those countries with partial or absent wastewater treatment systems. The overuse and misuse of antibiotics has been linked with the increase of antibiotic resistant bacteria. The relation between the occurrence of antibiotics and resistance genes in surface waters has been widely studied worldwide evincing the great importance of this subject. In this work, a methodology for quantification of 40 antibiotics of 5 different classes, in river water, by SPE-LC-MS/MS was validated. Samples were taken during a two-year period from Dilúvio River, a stream that crosses the city of Porto Alegre (RS - Brazil) and receives in nature domestic effluent. The methodology met the requirements of validation, with Limit of Quantification varying from 20 ng L-1 to 100 ng L-1. A total of 48 samples was analyzed for the presence of antibiotics for two years. From the 40 antibiotics analyzed, 8 of them (Azithromycin, Cephalexin, ciprofloxacin, clindamycin, norfloxacin, sulfadiazine, sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) were present in all sampling points in the range of

The aim of this study was to detect, quantify, and assess the risk of infection and illness for Group A Rotavirus (RVA) in the watersheds of the Santa Lucia and Uruguay rivers in Uruguay. Monthly sampling was carried out for one year in six sites in the watershed of the Santa Lucía River and four in the Uruguay River. All the collection sites are used for recreational activities. Viral concentration was performed with the adsorption-elution method, and detection and quantification of RVA was carried out by TaqMan quantitative PCR (qPCR). Quantitative microbial risk assessment was applied to estimate the daily and annual risk of RVA infection, as well as the daily risk of illness considering direct exposure through recreational activity. RVA was detected in 42% (20/48) of the analyzed samples in the Uruguay River and 40% (29/72) in the Santa Lucía River. The virus was present in all the analyzed points in both watersheds. A pattern of seasonality, characterized by a higher detection frequency of the virus during coldest month of the year, was observed in both basins. The mean concentration for RVA was 1.3 × 105 genomic copies/L. The microbiological risk assessment shows that Santa Lucía watershed presented the highest daily risk of infection (6.41E-01) and illness (3.20E-01) estimated for the point downstream of Florida City; meanwhile for Uruguay River, the highest probabilities of infection (6.82E-01) and illness (3.41E-01) were estimated for the collection site for drinking water intake in Salto city. These results suggest that RVA contamination of these important rivers negatively impact on their microbiological quality since they are used for recreation and drinking water intake, demonstrating that the disposal of waste from cities located in their riverside confers a constant threat of infection for the general population, especially for children.

Manaus is the Capital City of Amazonas State, Brazil, in the heart of the Amazon rainforest. Its metropolitan area has a huge hydrographic basin where the disorganized urbanization has caused adverse effects in the urban rivers and creeks water quality. Thus, this study was conducted to evaluate the contents of Ba, Cr, Mn, Zn, Ni, Cu, the physicochemical parameters and their respective health risks in water samples from rivers and creeks located in urban areas with different degrees of urbanization in two different seasons. The determination of the physicochemical parameters showed the samples collected in areas with riparian vegetation presented mean values of temperature, pH, total dissolved solids and electrical conductivity lower than samples collected in urban environment. The hotspots of trace elements content were associated to the presence of industrial and domestic effluents as the main pollution source. The Water Quality Index results denoted a low water quality in four sampling sites, one during the rainy season and three others during the dry season. The overall non-carcinogenic health in the urban rivers was considered high in regions with huge population and intense anthropogenic activity. The results showed the potential risk of some of the trace elements on human beings, especially on children. The main element contributor to non-carcinogenic risk was Cr, although Mn and Ni also contributed to non-carcinogenic risk in a few areas, mainly for children during the dry season.

The development of analytical methods capable of determining micropollutants is essential for quality control of drinking water. Benzodiazepines, a class of pharmaceuticals with anxiolytic properties, have received increasing attention as micropollutants. The purpose of this study was to develop an analytical method for determination of three benzodiazepine drugs (bromazepam, clonazepam and diazepam) in surface water. For the extraction of the matrix analytes, SPE cartridges (C18, 500 mg/3 mL) were used. The method was validated according to the quality criteria of the USEPA 8000D Validation Guide. The developed and validated method showed recovery values between 57 and 100%, RSD < 20% and R2 > 0.9949. LD ranged between 2.70 and 5.00 ng L-1 for bromazepam and clonazepam respectively whereas LQ was 0.01 µg L-1 for all analytes. The matrix affected the signal intensity of clonazepam thus evidencing the matrix effect by analysis statistic (F test).

The aim of this study was to determine the origin (human, bovine or porcine) and the concentration of the fecal sources of contamination in waters from Santa Lucía basin and Uruguay River in Uruguay by using host-specific viral markers (adenoviruses and polyomaviruses) as microbial source tracking (MST). Between June 2015 and May 2016, monthly collections of surface water samples were performed in six sites in Santa Lucía basin and four sites in Uruguay River (n = 120 samples). Viral concentration was carried out using an absorption-elution method. Detection and quantification of human and porcine adenovirus (HAdV and PAdV, respectively) and human and bovine polyomavirus (HPyV and BoPyV, respectively) were performed by quantitative PCR (qPCR). To evaluate the infectivity of circulating HAdV, an integrated cell culture-qPCR (ICC-qPCR) was used. A logistic regression analysis was carried out to estimate the influence of environmental variables on the virus presence in surface waters. Overall, HAdV was the prevalent (18%; 21/120) followed by BoPyV (11%; 13/120) and HPyV (3%; 3/120), whereas PAdV was not detected in this study. The mean concentration ranged from 1.5 × 104 genomic copies/L (gc/L) for HAdV to 1.8 × 102 gc/L for HPyV. Infective HAdVs were observed in two out of ten analyzed samples. A significant effect of environmental temperature (p = 0.001) and river (p = 0.012) on the presence of human viruses was found. These results suggest that fecal contamination could affect the water quality of these rivers, showing deficiencies in the procedure of sewage discharge from regional cities, livestock and dairy farms.

The extensive use of pesticides in agricultural practices has been associated with human health problems and environmental contamination worldwide. Brazil is the largest consumer of pesticides in the world and Espírito Santo State stands out as the second Brazilian producer of coffee. However, there is no information about environmental impact of coffee producing at Itapemirim River Basin (IRB) region, Espírito Santo State, Brazil; hence a simple and quick method using open access softwares (AGROSCRE and ARAquá Web) to estimate surface entrainment and pesticide leaching potential was carried out. AGROSCRE evaluates the contamination risk of superficial and groundwater by Active Ingredients (AIs), using GOSS Method, GUS index and US EPA criteria, while ARAquá Web estimates AI concentrations in water resources, indicating their suitability based on water quality requirements for different uses. Regarding pesticides used in coffee plantations, there is 44.7% chance of surface water and 23.7% chance of groundwater contamination. Results showed that ametryne, cyproconazole, diuron, epoxiconazole, flutriafol, triadimenol and triazophos pose contamination risk to both surface water and groundwater in the IRB region. Of these, 10.5% of the total AIs are triazoles and fall under environmental classes II and III (Product Very/Dangerous to the Environment). The AIs ametryne, thiamethoxam, iprodione, flutriafol, triazophos, endosulfan, triadimenol, cyproconazole, diuron, pendimethalin, chlorpyrifos, copper II hydroxide, etion, epoxiconazole and paraquat dichloride, were found to be potentially toxic, presenting environmental concentrations ranging from 123.40 µg L-1 to 0.14 µg L-1, which are higher than the safety standard for potable water (0.1 µg L-1). With respect to these AIs, chlorpyrifos, ethion and triazophos showed concentrations higher than EC50 values for aquatic invertebrates and ametryne and diuron for algae. Thus, local residents and environment may be at high risk of pesticide exposure, when these AIs are used in coffee plantations next to surface water or groundwater.

Surface water samples from the environmental continuum spanning rivers (Petrohue, Cochamo, Puelo), fjord (Reloncaví), and the inner sea of Chiloé in Chilean Patagonia were analyzed to estimate concentration and distribution of dissolved Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs). High concentrations of HCHs, DDTs and endosulfan found in surface waters from rivers suggest that rivers are the major source of dissolved OCPs to coastal marine ecosystems. We interpret variations in the distribution and concentration as an apparent oscillation between rain and snow-scavenging processes that might determine the type of OCPs that can be preferentially deposited on mountains, glaciers, rivers, estuaries, and finally transferred to the marine realm. Predominance of α-HCH, γ-HCH, p,p'-DDE and α-endosulfan compounds suggest that the main deposition mechanism of OCPs to the Chilean Patagonia is rain scavenging. Snow and rain can be additional sources of OCPs that must be considered for future studies in fjord systems in Chilean Patagonia.

Freshwater resources are increasingly scarce due to human activities, and the understanding of water quality variations at different spatial and temporal scales is necessary for adequate management. Here, we analyze the hypotheses that (1) the presence of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and (2) a polluted tributary that drains downstream from the WWTP change the spatial patterns of physicochemical variables (pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, and electrical conductivity) and nutrient concentrations (reactive soluble phosphorus, total phosphorus, nitrogen series, total nitrogen, and total dissolved carbon) along a mid-order river in SE Brazil and that these effects depend on rainfall regime. Six study sites were sampled along almost 4 years to evaluate the impacts of human activities, including sites upstream (1-3) and downstream (5-6) from the WWTP. The impacts were observed presenting an increasing trend from the source (site 1) towards Água Quente stream (site 4, the polluted tributary), with signs of attenuation at site 5 (downstream from both WWTP and site 4) and the river mouth (site 6). Input of nutrients by rural and urban runoff was observed mainly at sites 2 and 3, respectively. At sites 4 and 5, the inputs of both untreated and treated wastewaters increased nutrient concentrations and changed physicochemical variables, with significant impacts to Monjolinho River. Seasonal variations in the measured values were also observed, in agreement with the pluviometric indexes of the region. Univariate analyses suggested no effect of the WWTP for most variables, with continued impacts at sites downstream, but non-parametric multivariate analysis indicated that these sites were recovering to chemical characteristics similar to upstream sites, apparently due to autodepuration. Therefore, multivariate methods that allow rigorous tests of multifactor hypotheses can greatly contribute to determine effects of both point and non-point sources in river systems, thus contributing to freshwater monitoring and management.

Com o desenvolvimento humano, os recursos hídricos sofrem modificações derivadas da expansão demográfica e principalmente da falta de saneamento básico, que interferem diretamente na qualidade desses recursos com a introdução de substâncias químicas tóxicas e bioagentes patogênicos. Os vírus entéricos de veiculação hídrica, como adenovírus e rotavírus, merecem destaque considerando seus impactos na saúde pública. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a presença de adenovírus e rotavírus em águas superficiais do Córrego Ribeirão Preto, SP. A coleta foi realizada em 11 pontos distintos, da nascente até a confluência com o Rio Pardo. O Teste de ELISA foi o método utilizado para a detecção dos vírus (RIDASCREEN® Adenovirus, RIDASCREEN® Rotavirus - R-Biopharm). De acordo com os resultados obtidos, 73% das amostras foram positivas para adenovírus, enquanto que 36% foram positivas para rotavírus. Considerando a virulência desses vírus entéricos e a vulnerabilidade de indivíduos imunossuprimidos, idosos e crianças, é preocupante a contaminação por esses agentes patogênicos de veiculação hídrica amplamente disseminados em águas superficiais.


Water resources have been suffering with the changes in demographic expansion and the lack of basic sanitation. These factors directly interfere with the quality of these resources due to the discharge of toxic chemicals and pathogenic bio-agents. The waterborne enteric viruses, such as rotavirus and adenovirus, deserve attention considering its impact on public health. The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of adenovirus and rotavirus in surface water of Ribeirão Preto stream. Samplings were conducted in 11 different points from the spring to the confluence with the Rio Pardo. The ELISA test was carried out for the detection of viruses (RIDASCREEN® adenovirus, rotavirus RIDASCREEN® - R-Biopharm). According to the results, 73% of the samples were positive for adenovirus, while 36% were positive for rotavirus. Given the virulence of these enteric viruses and the vulnerability of immunosuppressed individuals, i.e. the elderly and children, contamination with these waterborne pathogens widely disseminated in surface water is concerning

OBJETIVO: Analisar o efeito da qualidade da água de reservatórios domésticos de abastecimento público na resposta oviposicional de fêmeas de Aedes aegypti. MÉTODOS: Estudo conduzido em laboratório a partir de imaturos de Ae. aegypti, coletados em caixas d'água do município de Potim, SP, 2009. Foram disponibilizados simultaneamente três tipos de água por gaiola para a deposição dos ovos: ovipositor (A) com água coletada em caixa d'água de Taubaté, SP; ovipositor (B) com água destilada (controle); e ovipositor (C) com água coletada em caixa d'água de Potim. Foram analisados parâmetros fisicoquímicos. O teste de Kruskall-Wallis foi utilizado para analisar a média de ovos nas diferentes amostras de água e nas comparações posteriores, o teste Dwass-Steel-Chritchlow-Flingner. O índice de atividade de oviposição foi adotado para avaliar a resposta oviposicional. RESULTADOS: Foi observada diferença significativa no número de ovos entre as soluções líquidas testadas (H = 45; p < 0,0001). O número de ovos na água de caixas d'água de abastecimento público de captação em poços profundos (C) foi estatisticamente superior a amostras de água de caixas d'água de abastecimento público de superfície (A) (p < 0,0001) e do Controle (B) (p < 0,0001). Não houve diferença significante entre o número de ovos do Controle (B) e água de superfície (A). A primeira postura foi a mais produtiva em todas as soluções testadas nas três gaiolas. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of the quality of publicly supplied water in domestic water tanks on egg laying by female Aedes aegypti. METHODS: Laboratory study on immature Ae. aegypti, collected from water-tanks in the municipality of Potim, SP, Southeastern Brazil. Each cage contained three types of water in which eggs could be laid: Three choice per test were simultaneously used to deposit the eggs, ovipositor (A) with water collected from a water tank in Taubaté, ovipositor (B) with distilled water (control) and ovipositor (C) water collected from a water tank in the municipality of Potim. Physiochemical parameters were analyzed. The Kruskall-Wallis test was used to analyze the mean number of eggs in each water sample and the Dwass-Steel-Critchlow-Fligner test was used in making comparisons. To evaluate egg laying, an ovipositional activity index was adopted. RESULTS: A significant difference in the number of eggs was found between the liquid solutions tested (H = 45; p < 0.0001). The number of eggs found in water tank samples originating from deep wells (C), was statistically superior to water samples from water tanks originating from superficial wells (A) (p < 0.0001) and from the Control (C) p < 0.0001. There was no significant difference between the number of eggs in Control (B) and the surface water (A). In all three tests, the first position was the most productive in all tested solutions. Only water sample (C) produced a positive index (0.54), i.e., attractive to egg laying. CONCLUSIONS: Water quality influences egg laying by Aedes aegypti. The high concentrations of ammonium nitrate in public water supplies suggest that this chemical component was responsible for attracting pregnant female Aedes aegypti to lay eggs in these environments. .
