RESUMO
Background: Preterm birth is associated with decreased nephron endowment. Currently, there is no reliable non-invasive biomarker to identify or monitor decreased nephron number in at-risk patients. Urinary Kidney Injury Molecule-1 (KIM-1) is a biomarker of acute and chronic renal injury. We measured urinary KIM-1 among a wide array of other potential biomarkers. Methods: We conducted an ambispective cohort study of 5-years-old children born prematurely and healthy controls identified from city schools. Detailed anthropometrics, renal ultrasound dimensions, and biochemical parameters were measured. Urinary KIM-1 was measured using Luminex® technology. Age independent z-scores were calculated and compared. Spearman correlations were used for estimating the association between measures and KIM-1. Results: We enrolled 129 children, 97 (75.2%) born pre-term and 32 (24.8%) healthy controls born at full-term. Pre-term patients had significantly lower weight and body surface area than controls. Pre-term patients and controls did not differ in current age, sex, race, height, blood pressure, urinary sodium, fractional sodium excretion, serum creatinine and estimated GFR. All spearman correlation between KIM-1 and gestational age, renal and serum measurements were weak without statistical significance. Conclusion: In 5-year-old children born prematurely, KIM-1 was not correlated with gestational age. Further prospective studies need to confirm this finding.
RESUMO
Despite numerous studies related to dehydration there is still a lack of scientific literature presenting hydration status and fluid intake of judo athletes during different periods. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate, fluid intake, hydration status and body weight changes of young judo athletes during a typical day of training in preparation period. Twenty-two young judo athletes (age: 12 ± 0.7 y, experience: 3.5 ± 1.1) voluntarily participated in this study. Hydration status and weight were examined in the morning, before and immediately after the training. All athletes trained 90 min and they consumed fluids ad libitum during the exercise. According to morning urine specific gravity (USG) values, 81.2% of the athletes were dehydrated while only 18.8% of the athletes were euhydrated. Pre-training urine measurements showed that 63.64% of the athletes presented dehydration and 77.27% of the athletes completed the training in dehydrated condition despite fluid availability during the training. Mean body weight loss during training was -0.64 ± 0.66%. It can be concluded that young judo athletes presented high prevalence of dehydration as indicated by USG values. Most of the athletes were dehydrated during a typical training day and completed the training in more dehydrated conditions compared to pre training values despite ad libitum fluid intake. It is of great importance to evaluate hydration status of the athletes before training to refrain from common practice of fluid restriction for weight loss and adverse effects of a persistent state of fluid deficit on physical and health related state.

Abstract Purpose: Hydration has been shown to play a pivotal role in sport. Soccer is a team sport in which the integrity of all players is vital for team performance; thus, individual player hydration status is important. The primary aim of this study was to investigate the hydration status of female collegiate soccer players during regular season. Methods: Sixteen collegiate female soccer players (age: 20.4 ± 0.8 years; height: 163.6 ± 6.9 cm; weight: 65.3 ± 12 kg) provided urine over 9 days to monitor their hydration status. Hydration was determined by urine specific gravity (Usg). Usg was analyzed in the morning (AM) and in the afternoon before practice/game (PM). Results: All 16 players were at least minimally hypohydrated (Usg > 1.010) in the AM on 5 of the 9 days tested. Players had significantly higher Usg values in the AM as compared to PM (F(1,250) = 23.09; p < 0.0001); however, there was no significant time*day interaction (F(1,250) = 1.98; p = 0.16). Conclusion: Data show a high prevalence of hypohydration occurring in this specific population. This sub-optimal hydration status could be a cause for concern in terms of overall performance. Efforts should be made to integrate hydration interventions and daily monitoring to minimize hypohydration in players.

This work evaluated the performance of potato clones for some agronomic and processing traits, in subtropical and high-altitude tropical regions, under conventional and organic production systems. Experiments were conducted in spring of 2017 and 2018 in Canoinhas-SC (subtropical), under the conventional system, and in winter of 2018 and 2019 in Brasília-DF (tropical), Brazil, under conventional and organic systems. Eleven advanced clones and cultivars Agata (fresh), Atlantic (chipping) and Asterix (French fry) were evaluated. RCBD with tree replications was used, and tuber yield and processing traits, plant vigor and cycle were evaluated. It was not possible to select high yielding and good processing quality clones with short cycle and less vigorous plants. It because higher yield and larger tuber size were attained by longer cycle genotypes, which had higher specific gravity, but darker frying color. The most outstanding clones differed with region and production system. For chipping, in the subtropical region, no clone had adequate quality, but in tropical F177-11-20 presented similar processing traits and higher or similar yield to 'Atlantic' in both systems, and also ORG7785 in organic. Comparing with Asterix, for French fry, in the subtropical region, superior or similar to the standard this cultiva rwere F129-10-06 and F163-11-01; while in the tropical region and conventional system, were the clones ORG7785, F129-10-06, F163-11-01, F177-11-20, ORG6464, ORG 6377, F05-11-03, Odone 80-02 and F174-11-01; and in organic system, the best clones were F54-11-03, ORG7785, F129-10-06, F163-11-01, F177-11-20 and ORG6464.

BACKGROUND: Hydration status affects endurance performance. Pre-exercise hydration recommendations target the consumption of high carbohydrate and sodium beverages. Milk, due to its carbohydrate and sodium content, may be considered an effective pre-exercise hydration beverage. PURPOSE: In a randomized cross-over trial, we compared the effects of an isotonic sport drink (SPD) with skim milk (SM) consumption before a race, on fluid homeostasis and time-trial performance in road cyclists. METHODS: Male road cyclists (n = 9; age, 26.8 ± 4.78 years) with 10.8 ± 8.56 years of experience in national competitions, consumed either SPD or SM in doses of 350 mL at 3 h and 350 mL at 1.5 h before a 18.6 km time-trial race. Measurements of body mass, urine specific gravity (USG), urine color and time-trial were compared between drinks (group; g) before and after the race (time; t). RESULTS: The two-way ANOVA showed no differences between SPD and SM in body mass (t, p < 0.0001; g, p = 0.89; t × g, p = 0.54), USG (t, p = 0.01; g, p = 0.63; t × g, p = 0.29) and urine color (t, p = 0.01; g, p = 0.54; t × g, p = 0.28) before or after race. Furthermore, no differences on water consumption during the race (p = 0.55) or time-trial performance (p = 0.84) were observed between trials. CONCLUSION: Current results may help athletes with different beverages preferences to increase their options of hydration strategies.

Wood density is expressed by the ratio between dry weight and fresh volume of a sample piece. The value of this measure is an important variable for assessing wood functional properties, successional stages and biomass/carbon stock estimates in different terrestrial ecosystems. Wood density data were collected for tree species from ecotone forests of the northern Brazilian Amazonia. We sampled 680 individuals with stem diameter ≥10â¯cm. For each sampled individual measurements were taken for three stem variables: bark thickness (mm), bark density (g cm-3) and wood density (g cm-3). This dataset is intended to improve biomass and carbon estimates of forests in the northern ecotone region of Brazilian Amazonia, an area poorly known in terms of ecosystem dynamics.
RESUMO
We developed and evaluated the properties of in-house urine reference materials for the verification of laboratory refractometers, which are frequently used in clinical chemistry and doping testing laboratories. Urine was gathered from 26 healthy volunteers (16 male 30 ± 5 years old and 10 female 29 ± 4 years old), from which two urine batches were obtained: one with a low specific gravity (1.012± 0.003) and the other with a high specific gravity (1.027 ± 0.003). Homogeneity studies were conducted over 20 consecutive days. For short-term stability studies, aliquots of both urine batches were stored at -20 ± 2°C; 3 ± 2°C; 20 ± 2°C; 45 ± 2°C for 0, 2, 7, 14 and 35 days, under both light and dark conditions. Similarly, another study was conducted to measure the long-term stability of urine at -20 ± 2°C, over a 24-month evaluation period. Our data showed that the urine was homogeneous and stable at -20 ± 2°C, 3 ± 2°C, 20 ± 2°C, and 45 ± 2°C under both light and dark conditions. In all cases, the urine was evaluated by specific gravity and no statistically significant differences (p ≤ 0.05) were recorded. Additionally, a proficiency test was conducted in collaboration with 15 ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratories, and z-scores and performance factors were evaluated. These data indicate that this material could be used for the verification of refractometers.

Sixty fresh hen eggs and 60 quail eggs were used in an experiment conducted at UFRRJ in order to survey the correlation between the eggshell quality measurements by average of the following parameters: specific gravity, breaking strength, percentage and thickness of the shell. For hen eggs, specific gravity demonstrated a higher correlation (p 0.05) between specific gravity with the other shell quality analyses. There was a correspondence between breaking strength with the percentage and the thickness of the shell, this ratio was higher for the percentage of shell. For hen eggs, the measurement of the specific gravity method used in commercial poultry farms was adequate to indicate good shell quality in accordance with great correlation with shell thickness. However, the evaluation of shell quality through the specific gravity for quail eggs needs adaptation in the methodology for egg morphology for this species. The parameters of shell quality surveyed: specific gravity, breaking resistance, percentage of shell and thickness of shell in hen eggs showed a positive correlation to a moderate degree (0.54). For quail eggs, the shell percentage shows moderate match (0.60) only with breaking strength and shell thickness.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of storage temperature and storage period on the external and internal quality of commercial white eggs. A total of 375 extra eggs of commercial white laying hens of the Hy-line line were allocated in a completely randomized design in a 2 x 7 factorial scheme (temperature x storage period), totaling 14 treatments with five replicates of three eggs each. The treatments were room temperature (26.5ºC) and refrigerated (11ºC) and seven storage periods (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 days). There was an interaction (P<0.05) between the factors evaluated for percentage of albumen and yolk, Haugh unit, yolk index and raw yolk color. A reduction in the internal quality of the eggs was observed throughout storage at room temperature compared to refrigerated eggs. Weight loss of the eggs increased in a quadratic manner (P<0.05) and specific gravity decreased linearly (P<0.05) with increasing storage period. The weight loss was intensified at room temperature. In conclusion, white eggs stored at room temperature show marked quality losses, mainly during storage for up to 30 days. Eggs kept under refrigeration can be stored for up to 20 days without changes in internal quality.

Eggs kept under refrigeration can be stored for up to 20 days without changes in internal quality.(AU)

ntroduction: Two important factors have been described as contributing to the onset of fatigue during physical exercise: Decreased muscle glycogen stores and the loss of water with electrolytes through sweating, favoring dehydration. Because of this, fluid and electrolyte replacement after physical exercise becomes the priority to restore altered body homeostasis during physical exercise. Due to its nutritional composition, milk appears to be a good natural alternative as a rehydration beverage after exercise. Objective: To compare the effectiveness chocolate skim milk as pots-exercise rehydration beverage with an artificial sports drink in the military, based on the hypothesis that chocolate skim milk has equal or better effects on post-exercise hydration than an artificial sports drink. Method: 30 soldiers (23.0 ± 3.2 years) were divided into 2 groups: 1) rehydration with sports drink with 6 percent carbohydrates and ratio of Na / K 2: 1 (ISO group). Rehydration with chocolate skim milk (LECHE group). Fluid retention was assessed through body weight and the specific gravity of urine (GEO) before and after physical exercise and after 2 hours of rehydration. Results: significant differences were found (p < 0.05) in fluid retention in the LECHE group compared to the ISO group. There were no significant differences between the GEO of both groups. Conclusion: The results show that rehydration with skim milk is more effective in fluid retention and weight recovery prior to exercise than sports drink(AU)

Species distributions and assemblage composition may be the result of trait selection through environmental filters. Here, we ask whether filtering of species at the local scale could be attributed to their hydraulic architectural traits, revealing the basis of hydrological microhabitat partitioning in a Central Amazonian forest. We analyzed the hydraulic characteristics at tissue (anatomical traits, wood specific gravity (WSG)), organ (leaf area, specific leaf area (SLA), leaf area : sapwood area ratio) and whole-plant (height) levels for 28 pairs of congeneric species from 14 genera restricted to either valleys or plateaus of a terra-firme forest in Central Amazonia. On plateaus, species had higher WSG, but lower mean vessel area, mean vessel hydraulic diameter, sapwood area and SLA than in valleys; traits commonly associated with hydraulic safety. Mean vessel hydraulic diameter and mean vessel area increased with height for both habitats, but leaf area and leaf area : sapwood area ratio investments with tree height declined in valley vs plateau species. [Correction added after online publication 29 March 2017: the preceding sentence has been reworded.] Two strategies for either efficiency or safety were detected, based on vessel size or allocation to sapwood. In conclusion, contrasting hydrological conditions act as environmental filters, generating differences in species composition at the local scale. This has important implications for the prediction of species distributions under future climate change scenarios.

The study aimed at assessing the quality of commercial laying hen eggs stored under different temperatures and for different storage periods. 360 eggs were collected soon after laying by DeKalb White laying hens. All eggs were identified, weighed, and randomly distributed in trays, being 150 stored at room temperature (26.5 ± 0.7°C), 150 other placed in trays under refrigeration (7.3 ± 0.5°C), and the remaining 60 eggs were set apart so the assessment could be performed on the first day. The trial design was completely randomized 2×11, scheme factorial, with two storage temperatures and six storage periods (zero, six, 12, 18, 24 and 30 days), with 30 repetitions. The assessed variables were egg weights, absolute and relative weights of albumen, yolk and shell, albumen height, specific gravity, Haugh unit, albumen diameter, albumen index and yolk. The values of absolute and relative weights of egg, albumen and yolk, albumen height, specific gravity, Haugh Unit, diameter and indices of albumen and yolk were significantly influenced (P<0.05) by the storage temperature and period. The absolute weight does not of shell (P>0.05) were influenced by different temperatures, however, the percentages of shell were influenced (P<0.05) linearly by storage time of eggs. It can be concluded that the eggs maintain high quality when stored for up to six days after laying, at room temperature, and maintain excellent quality when stored under refrigeration for up to 30 days.(AU)

Wood density, or more precisely, wood specific gravity, is an important parameter when estimating aboveground biomass, which has become a central tool for the management and conservation of forests around the world. When using biomass allometric equations for tropical forests, researchers are often required to assume phylogenetic trait conservatism, which allows us to assign genus- and family-level wood specific gravity mean values, to many woody species. The lack of information on this trait for many Neotropical plant species has led to an imprecise estimation of the biomass stored in Neotropical forests. The data presented here has information of woody tissue specific gravity from 2,602 individual stems for 386 species, including trees, lianas, and hemi-epiphytes of lowland tropical forests in Colombia. This data set was produced by us collecting wood cores from woody species in five localities in the Orinoco and Magdalena Basins in Colombia. We found lower mean specific gravity values in várzea than in terra firme and igapó.

The objective of this study was to compare methods for estimative of body composition of goats based on tritiated water space technique (TOH), specific gravity (SG) of carcass and 9-11th ribs. Ten Toggenburg x Alpine intact male goat kids, from 5.3±0.4 to 25.9±1.3 kg of body weight (BW), were used to estimate body composition by: 1) direct method, 2) TOH method, 3) SG of the carcass and 4) SG of the 9-11th whole ribs. In addition, update linear equations for predicting body composition were developed using data from direct method. The TOH space overestimated water body composition on average 31%. The SG of the carcass and 9-11th ribs underestimated water empty body composition (%) on average 21 and 12%, respectively. In spite of its overestimate, the determination of TOH space can be used as a reliable field technique to study relative changes in body composition of growing goats. Specific gravity is practicable in most circumstances and does not require expensive equipment. However, the SG of the carcass and 9-11th ribs has not a valid equation to predict body composition of growing goats.(AU)
