Most natural disasters result from geodynamic events such as landslides and slope collapse. These failures cause catastrophes that directly impact the environment and cause financial and human losses. Visual inspection is the primary method for detecting failures in geotechnical structures, but on-site visits can be risky due to unstable soil. In addition, the body design and hostile and remote installation conditions make monitoring these structures inviable. When a fast and secure evaluation is required, analysis by computational methods becomes feasible. In this study, a convolutional neural network (CNN) approach to computer vision is applied to identify defects in the surface of geotechnical structures aided by unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and mobile devices, aiming to reduce the reliance on human-led on-site inspections. However, studies in computer vision algorithms still need to be explored in this field due to particularities of geotechnical engineering, such as limited public datasets and redundant images. Thus, this study obtained images of surface failure indicators from slopes near a Brazilian national road, assisted by UAV and mobile devices. We then proposed a custom CNN and low complexity model architecture to build a binary classifier image-aided to detect faults in geotechnical surfaces. The model achieved a satisfactory average accuracy rate of 94.26%. An AUC metric score of 0.99 from the receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve and matrix confusion with a testing dataset show satisfactory results. The results suggest that the capability of the model to distinguish between the classes 'damage' and 'intact' is excellent. It enables the identification of failure indicators. Early failure indicator detection on the surface of slopes can facilitate proper maintenance and alarms and prevent disasters, as the integrity of the soil directly affects the structures built around and above it.

Swarming motility is a type of movement used by pathogenic flagellated bacteria as virulence factor to colonize surfaces and cause damage to the host. Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a pathogenic flagellated bacterium that increases its virulence by switching from swimmer to swarming cells. The hosts of pathogenic V. parahaemolyticus include farmed shrimp. Therefore, methods to detect and quantify this movement are important to control shrimp diseases caused by pathogenic V. parahaemolyticus strains. We developed an optimized swarming motility assay by identifying the most optimal type of agar, and drying time of the culture medium, agar concentration and volume of the bacterial culture to achieve the fastest swarming motility during the migration of V. parahaemolyticus on Petri dishes during a 24-hour incubation period. The method includes data analysis that could be used as a tool to identify potential anti-virulence products by comparing the slopes of the linearized diameters of the swarming halos of bacteria treated with the products, as they migrate on Petri dishes over a 24-hour incubation period. Here we report:â¢A simple method for detection and quantification of swarming motility halos of V. parahaemolyticus bacteria.â¢A method that could be used as a tool to identify potential anti-virulence products.

The Saña River Valley in Northern Peru is unusual for the western slopes of the Peruvian Andes because of its nearly year-round regime of precipitation instead of marked seasonal dry winters. This results in unexpected plant diversity. We surveyed the species of Peperomia (Piperaceae), occurring in this valley from 300 to 3000 m elevation, based on the study of specimens from ten herbaria and field collections, resulting in a total of 81 accessions, of which 48 were made by the authors. We found 16 different taxa: Peperomiacacaophila, from Ecuador, is reported for the first time in Peru; P.cymbifolia, P.dolabriformis and P.emarginulata are reported for the first time for the Saña River Valley; other widely distributed species like P.fraseri, P.galioides, P.haematolepis, P.hispidula, P.inaequalifolia, P.microphylla, and P.rotundata were also found. Five species new to science are described: P.pilocarpa, P.riosaniensis, close to P.palmiformis from Amazonas; P.sagasteguii, related to P.trinervis, P.symmankii, close to P.ricardofernandezii from Piura, and P.vivipara, related to P.alata. A key to the species of Peperomia from the Saña River Valley, based on vegetative characters, is provided.
ResumenEl valle del Río Saña en el norte de Perú es inusual para las vertientes occidentales de los Andes peruanos por su régimen de precipitación ininterrumpido en lugar de inviernos secos estacionales marcados. Esto resulta en una diversidad de plantas inesperada. Revisamos las especies de Peperomia (Piperaceae), del valle del Río Saña entre los 300 a 3000 m de altitud, basándonos en el estudio de especímenes de diez herbarios y colecciones de campo, resultando en un total de 81 accesiones, de las cuales 48 fueron realizadas por los autores. Encontramos 16 taxones diferentes: Peperomiacacaophila, de Ecuador, se reporta por primera vez en Perú; P.cymbifolia, P.dolabriformis y P.emarginulata se reportan por primera vez para el valle del Río Saña; otras especies ampliamente distribuidas como P.fraseri, P.galioides, P.haematolepis, P.hispidula, P.inaequalifolia, P.microphylla y P.rotundata también se encontraron. Se describen cinco especies nuevas para la ciencia: P.pilocarpa, P.riosaniensis, cercana de P.palmiformis de Amazonas; P.sagasteguii, relacionada con P.trinervis, P.symmankii, cercana a P.ricardofernandezii de Piura, y P.vivipara, relacionada con P.alata. Se presenta una clave para las especies de Peperomia del Valle del Río Saña basada en caracteres vegetativos.

The explosive diversity of rainfrogs (Pristimantis spp) reaches its highest levels in the mountains of the Tropical Andes, with remarkable cryptic species mainly in unexplored areas of Ecuador. Based on phylogenetics, morphometric traits, skull osteology and bioacoustics, we describe two new species of Pristimantis, previously confused with Pristimantisgladiator, that belong to the subgenus Trachyphrynus traditionally known as the Pristimantismyersi species group. The two new taxa are closely related, but have allopatric distributions. We discuss the importance of the Quijos and Pastaza River valleys in the diversification along Amazonian slopes of the Ecuadorian Andes.

Abstract Chira River is located on the north coast of Peru. The scant information of the ichthyofauna from coastal drainages from Peru is noteworthy. The aim of this study is to characterize the ichthyofauna along the Chira River basin in terms of diversity and altitudinal range distribution. The material examined belongs to the Ichthyological collection of the Natural History Museum (MUSM). The diversity of fishes is composed of 27 species belonging to 19 families and ten orders. Siluriformes and Characiformes were the most diverse, consisting of 22% (six species) for each one. Five species are new records for the Chira River (three natives and two non-natives). Six marine species and seven exotic species were recorded as well. The altitudinal distribution patterns for all species were registered. This study increases the known diversity of freshwater fishes from Pacific Drainage Rivers in Peru, and it could be used for management and conservation plans.
Resumen El río Chira está ubicado en la costa norte del Perú. La escasa información de la ictiofauna de las cuencas costeras del Perú es notable. El objetivo de este estudio es caracterizar la ictiofauna en la cuenca del río Chira en términos de diversidad y rango de distribución altitudinal. El material examinado pertenece a la colección ictiológica del Museo de Historia Natural (MUSM). La diversidad de peces está compuesta por 27 especies pertenecientes a 19 familias y 10 órdenes. Cinco especies son nuevos registros para el río Chira (tres nativas y dos no nativas). Fueron registradas seis especies marinas y siete especies exóticas. Este estudio incrementa el conocimiento de la diversidad de peces de las cuencas costeras en Perú, y puede ser usado para planes de manejo y conservación.

INTRODUCTION: Due to its high specificity and sensitivity, liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) is the gold standard method for immunosuppressant quantification in therapeutic drug monitoring. In this context, dried blood spots (DBS) have become a promising strategy as a sample collection procedure. Although the advantages of DBS over venipuncture are well known, this approach has limitations that strongly influence the acceptance of analytical results. Among them, the most important is hematocrit (Ht). The easiest way of overcoming this problem is by analyzing complete spots. In this strategy, called dried matrix on paper discs (DMPD), blood is volumetrically applied on pre-punched discs. OBJECTIVES: To validate an LC-MS/MS method for the quantification of tacrolimus, sirolimus, everolimus and cyclosporin A using DMPD. METHODS: The procedure was validated according to international guidelines using a commercial kit. The following performance parameters were evaluated: selectivity, carryover, linearity, accuracy, precision, lower limit of quantitation, relative recovery, commutability and stability. In addition, a method comparison study was performed to evaluate the clinical influence of Ht on the results. RESULTS: All performance parameters were within acceptance criteria and, hence, it was determined that the validated method is fit for the intended purpose. Likewise, calculated bias values on medical decision levels showed that there was no clinical influence of Ht on the results. CONCLUSION: Unlike other similar methodologies that have been published, here, a simple method has been fully validated. This is the first LC-MS/MS methodology adapting a commercial kit to use DMPD as a sampling strategy.

Two new species of Rubus (Rosaceae) from the western Andes of northern Ecuador are described. Rubuslongistipularis D.A. Espinel-Ortiz & Romol. is a scandent or climbing shrub found in the mountain forests of Chocó Andino from northern Ecuador. Rubusmaquipucunensis D.A. Espinel-Ortiz & Romol. is a vine or climbing shrub found in the rainforests of Chocó Andino from Pichincha and Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas. The species mentioned here are morphologically differentiated from all the Rubus species from Ecuador with a detailed botanical description, illustrations and photographs. We also report, for the first time, possible hybridisation between R.longistipularis and R.boliviensis Focke, as the samples reviewed showed mixed characteristics from both species.

Elachistocleis is a Neotropical genus of microhylid frogs with 18 species, most of which occur east of the Andes in South America. Here, we present a new phylogeny of Gastrophryninae and describe and name a new species of Elachistocleis from southern Ecuador-the first to be found west of the Andes and also the first from Ecuador. Our phylogeny is based on DNA sequences of the mitochondrial genes 12S rRNA, 16S rRNA, COI, and the nuclear genes BDNF, cmyc2, H3A, 28S, SIA1, and Tyr. Elachistocleis araios sp. n., is the sister species of all other Elachistocleis. The finding of this taxon highlights the probability of the existence of more Elachistocleis species west of the Andes.

We describe a new species of terrestrial frog of the genus Noblella from the eastern versants of the Ecuadorian Andes in the upper Pastaza watershed. Noblella naturetrekii sp. n. differs from its Ecuadorian congeners by the presence of a differentiated tympanic membrane and a weakly defined tympanic annulus, and eyelids with rounded tubercles. In addition, the new species is characterized by its blackish-dark brown ventral coloration scattered with little white dots and the absence of papillae at the tip of the fingers and toes. We provide a detailed description of the call and osteology of the new species. Finally, we present the most complete phylogeny of the genus, which confirms that Noblella is a non-monophyletic group.

El objetivo de este estudio fue conocer la composición y estructura de la comunidad de coleópteros acuáticos en diferentes quebradas a lo largo de un amplio gradiente altitudinal (476-4411 m de altitud) en Cusco, Perú. Para ello, se establecieron 12 estaciones de muestreo y se realizaron dos colectas durante los meses de mayo y julio-agosto del 2013 (época seca), en la zona de rápidos y sustrato pedregoso. Fueron colectados 3069 individuos entre larvas y adultos de coleópteros acuáticos, pertenecientes a 23 géneros, agrupados en 10 familias. Elmidae presentó la mayor riqueza (13 géneros) y abundancia (90.4 %), distribuyéndose a lo largo de todo el gradiente. Los géneros más representativos por abundancia fueron: Austrelmis, Neoelmis, Heterelmis y Anchytarsus. Las pruebas estadísticas no paramétricas Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney y Kruskall-Wallis para la riqueza, abundancia y estructura comunitaria, así como, el análisis de agrupamiento (CLUSTER) y el análisis de similitud (ANOSIM) mostraron diferencias significativas en la composición de la comunidad de coleópteros acuáticos a lo largo del gradiente estudiado. El análisis de similitud porcentual (SIMPER) permitió identificar los géneros que más influyeron en la estructura comunitaria, destacando Neoelmis y Heterelmis en estaciones ubicadas a baja y media altitud, y Austrelmis en estaciones de mayor altitud. Se evidenció una correlación positiva de la temperatura con la riqueza, diversidad y equidad, y una correlación negativa de la altitud con estas mismas variables.
The aim of this paper was to know the composition and structure of water beetles community in different streams along a wide altitudinal gradient (476-4411 m altitude) in Cusco, Peru. For that, 12 sampling stations were established and two collects were carried out during May and July-August 2013 (dry season), in the running water and stony substrate. A total of 3069 individuals were collected between larvae and adults of aquatic beetles, belonging to 23 genera, grouped into 10 families. Elmidae presented the highest richness (13 genera) and abundance (90.4%), being distributed along the whole gradient. The most representative genera by abundance were: Austrelmis, Neoelmis, Heterelmis and Anchytarsus. The Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney and Kruskall-Wallis non-parametric statistical tests for richness, abundance and community structure, clustering analysis (CLUSTER) and similarity analysis (ANOSIM) showed significant differences in the composition of the beetles community along the gradient studied. The percentage similarity analysis (SIMPER) allowed to identify the genera that most influenced the community structure, stand out Neoelmis and Heterelmis in stations located at low and medium altitude, and Austrelmis in stations of higher altitude. A positive correlation of temperature with the richness, diversity and equity, and a negative correlation with these variables altitude was evident.

ABSTRACT Many authors have been proposed several correlation equations between geomechanical classifications and strength parameters. However, these correlation equations have been based in rock masses with different characteristics when compared to Brazilian rock masses. This paper aims to study the applicability of the geomechanical classifications to obtain strength parameters of three Brazilian rock masses. Four classification systems have been used; the Rock Mass Rating (RMR), the Rock Mass Quality (Q), the Geological Strength Index (GSI) and the Rock Mass Index (RMi). A strong rock mass and two soft rock masses with different degrees of weathering located in the cities of Ouro Preto and Mariana, Brazil; were selected for the study. Correlation equations were used to estimate the strength properties of these rock masses. However, such correlations do not always provide compatible results with the rock mass behavior. For the calibration of the strength values obtained through the use of classification systems, stability analyses of failures in these rock masses have been done. After calibration of these parameters, the applicability of the various correlation equations found in the literature have been discussed. According to the results presented in this paper, some of these equations are not suitable for the studied rock masses.

El desarrollo del presente trabajo se fundamenta en la importancia de apoyar los tratamientos de Rehabilitación Motriz por medio de Tecnología Informática para beneficio de los pacientes y especialistas del área. De acuerdo a un análisis realizado de las tecnologías existentes para la Rehabilitación Motriz, se ha identificado una serie de inconvenientes que limitan su uso en algunos tratamientos y por consecuencia los pacientes no continúan o no finalizan sus terapias, en este trabajo se propone emplear una herramienta de bajo costo (sensor Microsoft Kinect) que apoye en la captura de movimientos de los puntos clave de las extremidades superiores (manos, codos y hombros) usando pendientes lineales. Así mismo, se han realizado una serie de pruebas a 21 usuarios, en donde se evaluaron sus movimientos mediante umbrales que determinaron si un ejercicio fue realizado correctamente(AU)
The development of this researckneh is based on supporting Motor Rehabilitation treatments using Information Technology for the benefit of patients and specialists in the area. According to an analysis of current technologies for Motor Rehabilitation, we have identified some disadvantages that limit their use in the treatment and therefore patients do not continue or complete their therapies, this study intends to use a tool low cost (Microsoft Kinect sensor) to support the motion capture of the key points of the upper extremities (hands, elbows and shoulders) using a slopes. Also, the tests were conducted with 21 users, the algorithm evaluated some movements, the thresholds used determined the correct exercises(AU)

El distrito de Laraos registra 155 especies de Asteráceas agrupadas en 66 géneros, 12 tribus y 3 subfamilias. Senecio, Werneria y Baccharis son los géneros con mayor riqueza. Senecio larahuinensis y Conyza coronopifolia son nuevos registros para la flora del Perú, siendo la primera como especie nueva; además 35 especies se reportan como nuevas para Lima. Se presentan claves dicotómicas para la determinación de las tribus, géneros y especies.
For the district Laraos 155 species of asteraceae grouped into 66 genus, 12 tribes and 3 subfamilies are recorded. Senecio, Baccharis and Werneria are genus more wealth. Senecio larahuinensis and Conyza coronopifolia are new records for the flora of Peru as the first new species; further 35 species are new reports for Lima. Dichotomous keys for the identification of tribes, genus and species present.

ResumenLos gradientes altitudinales representan un sistema apropiado para evaluar si existe una relación general entre los patrones de riqueza, variables ambientales, y los procesos ecológicos que determinan cuantas especies co-ocurren en un área dada.En cuanto a los peces de agua dulce en arroyos de montaña la relación prevalente es un decrecimiento monotónico en riqueza de especies con la altura. El objetivo de este estudio es evaluar cuatro hipótesis que pueden explicar la relación negativa entre la riqueza local de especies de peces y la altura, 1) hipótesis de la disminución de la energía disponible 2) hipótesis del aumento del rigor climático 3) hipótesis de la diversidad de hábitats e 4) hipótesis de la severidad de las condiciones físicas del hábitat que se presentan río arriba, relacionada a las dificultades para colonizar las partes altas de los ríos. Se recolectaron peces y macro-invertebrados en 83 sitios entre 200 a 4 000 m en dos cuencas en la Amazonía boliviana. La primera hipótesis fue evaluada mediante regresiones entre la densidad de macro-invertebrados, los peces invertívoros y la altura. Para evaluar la segunda y tercera hipótesis se realizó un análisis de regresión múltiple (GLM), entre la riqueza y varios factores locales y regionales. Se analizó también la disimilitud de los ensamblajes de peces sobre el gradiente altitudinal utilizando los índices βsim y βnes. Se encontró que la riqueza de peces disminuye de manera lineal con el aumento de la altura. La densidad de macroinvertebrados aumenta con la altura, contrariamente a la riqueza de peces invertívoros, sugiriendo que la energía no constituye un factor limitante para la colonización de las especies de peces en zonas altas. El GLM explicó un 86 % de la variación total de la riqueza, con un aporte significativo de la temperatura del agua, las pendientes máximas en el río principal y el ancho de río. El βsim presentó valores altos en niveles de altura bajos, mostrando mayor recambio de especies entre los sitios cercanos a la fuente de colonización. Inversamente, el βnes mostró valores mayores en las partes altas, correspondientes a cambios por pérdida de especies. Estos resultados sugieren que el rigor climático junto con la severidad física del hábitat crean barreras a la colonización y explican los cambios de riqueza en el gradiente altitudinal.
AbstractAltitudinal gradients represent an appropriate system to assess whether there is a relationship between richness patterns, environmental variables, and the ecological processes that determine the species type and number inhabiting a given area. In mountain streams freshwater fishes, the most prevalent relationship is a monotonic decrease in species richness with elevation. The objective of this study was to evaluate four hypotheses that can explain the negative relationship between local fish species richness and altitude, 1) the hypothesis of decreasing energy availability, 2) the hypothesis of increasing climate severity, 3) the hypothesis of habitat diversity, and 4) the hypothesis of isolation by physical severity of the environment. Fish and macro-invertebrates were collected following standard methods from 83 sites (between 200-4 000 meters) of two river basins in the Bolivian Amazon. The first hypothesis was tested by analyzing relationships between the density of macro-invertebrates, the richness of invertivorous fish species and altitude; while the second and third hypotheses were assessed by a multiple regression analysis (GLM) between fish species richness and several local and regional factors. Besides, assemblage dissimilarity between sites along the altitudinal gradient was analyzed using βsim and βness indices. Fish richness decreases linearly with increasing altitude. The density of macro-invertebrates tends to increase at higher altitudes, contrary to invertivorous fish species richness, suggesting that energy availability is not a limiting factor for fish species colonization. The GLM explained 86 % of the variation in fish species richness, with a significant contribution of water temperature, maximum slope in the river mainstem, and stream width. There is a higher species turnover (βsim) between sites at low elevation. Inversely, βness shows higher values in the upper parts, corresponding to change in assemblages mainly due to species loss. Taken together, these results suggest that climatic and physical severities create strong barriers to colonization, further explaining the decrease in fish richness along the altitudinal gradient.

Describimos una nueva especie de Pristimantis conocida del bosque nublado de las estribaciones orientales de los Andes centrales de Ecuador. La nueva especie se caracteriza por tener un distintivo patrón de manchas irregulares blancas sobre el vientre negro, dorso verde, tubérculos cónicos en el párpado, tubérculo interorbital, e hilera de tubérculos ulnares y tarsales. Esfuerzos por conservar esta especie se han cristalizado en dos áreas protegidas dentro del corredor Llanganates Sangay, un punto caliente de diversidad que resguarda poblaciones de ranas endémicas y todavía desconocidas.

Los bosques relictos o fragmentos de bosque en las vertientes andinas Noroccidentales del Perú y Suroccidentales de Ecuador, son frágiles ecosistemas, que en el pasado fue un todo continuo. La importancia y singularidad de los bosques como «refugios» y hábitats con poca dinámica radica en su compleja diversidad florística y endemismos, consecuencia de su complicada topografía y ecología de sus hábitats. En este artículo introductorio se analizan 12 trabajos de investigación expuestos en el Taller sobre Bosques Relictos de la Vertiente Occidental Andina del Norte del Perú y Sur del Ecuador en mayo del 2004 en el X CONABOT, Trujillo-Perú. Aquí, los conocimientos sobre el tema son consolidados y actualizados, es así que los fragmentos de bosque suman más de 20 en el norte del Perú, enfatizando a dos de gran importancia: Bosque La Oscurana (Cajamarca) y Kañaris (Lambayeque). Así mismo, se determinan las relaciones entre los bosques relictos, analiza su dinámica, caracterización y como puede lograrse su conservación inmediata. Se plantean los aspectos cruciales para alcanzar la conservación de estos bosques remanentes: investigar y mostrar urgentemente su gran biodiversidad, subrayar el valor económico potencial de la fitodiversidad que poseen para la región y revalora su papel como áreas de captación de agua para los ríos que son fuente prioritaria para la agricultura y vida urbana en la costa.
The forest fragments or relict forests on the Western slopes of the Andes in northwest Peru and in south-west Ecuador are fragile ecosystems, which were largely continuous at some stage in the past. The importance and uniqueness of these forests as «refuges» and stable habitats roots partly in their complex diversity and their high levels of endemicity. These in turn are the outcome of a complex topography and ecology. In this introductory chapter 12 studies are analysed, which were presented at the Taller sobre Bosques Relictos de la Vertiente Occidental Andina del Norte del Perú y Sur del Ecuador in May 2004 at the X CONABOT, Trujillo-Perú. This helps to consolidate and update our knowledge on these over 20 forests fragments in northern Peru and two previously unknown fragments are presented for the first time: Bosque La Oscurana (Cajamarca) and Kañaris (Lambayeque). Some ideas are exposed on the the relationships between the relict forests, how to analyse their dynamics, how to characterize their structure and how their conservation may be achieved. It is proposed that crucial elements in a conservation of these forests are a) urgently inventorizing them to demonstrate their high diversity b) emphasizing their economic potential with respect to the abundance of phytogenetic ressources c) evaluating their role as catchment areas for the rivers which are the primary source of water for agriculture and urban life on the coast.
RESUMO
Los bosques relictos de las vertientes occidentales de los Andes del norte del Perú y el sur del Ecuador forman parte de dos regiones, una la denominada región de endemismo tumbesina (caracterizada principalmente por bosques secos) y otra, en altitudes mayores, la región de endemismo del sur de los Andes centrales (caracterizada por bosques nublados y páramo). La región tumbesina es reconocida por albergar gran cantidad de aves endémicas, muchas de las cuales están amenazadas, y también por el alto grado de deforestación y fragmentación de sus hábitats naturales. Este artículo presenta un resumen del estado de conservación de dichas aves y bosques, con recomendaciones para mejorar la conservación de los últimos bosques de la vertiente occidental.
The relict forests of the west slopes of the Andes of northern Peru and southern Ecuador form part of the Tumbesian Endemic Bird Area (characterized by dry forests) and at higher altitudes the Southern Central Andes Endemic Bird Area (characterized by cloud forests and paramo). The Tumbesian Region is recognized for its high level of endemic birds, many of which are threatened and also for the high level of deforestation and fragmentation of its natural habitats. This article presents an overview of the state of conservation of these birds and forests, with recommendations for improving the conservation of the last forests of the western slope.
