Sertoli cells (SCs) are essential to maintaining germ cell development. Metformin, the main pharmacologic treatment for pediatric type 2 diabetes, is administered to children during SC maturation. The present study aimed to analyze whether metformin affects SC energy metabolism and blood-testis barrier (BTB) integrity. Primary SC cultures were used for the in vitro studies. In vivo effects were studied in Sprague-Dawley rats treated with 200 mg/kg metformin from Pnd14 to Pnd30. Metformin decreased fatty acid oxidation and increased 3-hydroxybutyrate production in vitro. Moreover, it decreased the transepithelial electrical resistance across the monolayer and induced ZO-1 redistribution, suggesting an alteration of cell junctions. In vivo, a mild but significant increase in BTB permeability and ZO-1 expression was observed in the metformin group, without changes in testicular histology and meiosis progression. Additionally, adult rats that received metformin treatment during the juvenile period showed no alteration in BTB permeability or daily sperm production. In conclusion, metformin exposure may affect BTB permeability in juvenile rats, but this seems not to influence spermatogenesis progression. Considering the results obtained in adult animals, it is possible to speculate that metformin treatment during the juvenile period does not affect testicular function in adulthood.

Sertoli cells are essential for the male reproduction system as they provide morphological support and nutrients for germ cells to guarantee ongoing spermatogenesis. The aim of this work was to predict the electrical properties at the plasma membrane that trigger Sertoli cell rapid responses by involving ionic channels. The rapid responses of Sertoli cells in culture were monitored using patch clamp electrical measurement and compared to data obtained using pharmacological tools (from intact seminiferous tubules). A mathematical model was used to define the roles of potassium channels and the ATP-dependent Na+/K+pump in these responses. Mathematical data verification was also performed to determine the resting and hormonal stimulated membrane potentials of Sertoli cells in the intact seminiferous tubules and of Sertoli cells in culture (patch clamp measurements). The prediction of these data based on mathematical modeling demonstrated, for the first time, the involvement of potassium channels and the activation of Na+/K+pump in the hyperpolarization of Sertoli cells and their consequent rapid responses. Moreover, the mathematical analysis showing the involvement of ionic balance in the rapid responses of these cells to hormones, such as follicle-stimulating hormone, is consistent with previous reports obtained using pharmacological techniques in Sertoli cells. Thus, the validation of such data is reliable and represents a first step in the proposition for a mathematical model to predict rapid responses of Sertoli cells to hormonal stimuli.

The definitive number of Sertoli cells (SCs), achieved during the proliferative periods, defines the spermatogenic capacity in adulthood. It is recognized that FSH is the main mitogen targeting SC and that it exerts its action, at least partly, through the activation of the PI3K/Akt/mTORC1 pathway. mTORC1 controls a large number of cellular functions, including glycolysis and cell proliferation. Interestingly, recent evidence revealed that the glycolytic flux might modulate mTORC1 activity and, consequently, cell cycle progression. Although mature SC metabolism has been thoroughly studied, several aspects of metabolism regulation in proliferating SC are still to be elucidated. The objective of this study was to explore whether aerobic glycolysis is regulated by FSH through mTORC1 pathway in proliferating SC, and to assess the involvement of glycolysis in the regulation of SC proliferation. The present study was carried out utilizing 8-day-old rat SC cultures. The results obtained show that FSH enhances glycolytic flux through the induction of 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase 3 (PFKFB3) and lactate dehydrogenase A (LDHA) in an mTORC1 dependent manner. In addition, PFKFB3 and LDH inhibitors prevent FSH from activating mTORC1 and stimulating SC proliferation and glycolysis, presumably through mTORC1 pathway inhibition. In summary, FSH simultaneously regulates SC proliferation and glycolysis in an mTORC1 dependent manner, and glycolysis seems to cooperate with FSH in the stimulation of both cellular functions through the modulation of the same signalling pathway. Therefore, a positive feedback between the mTORC1 pathway and glycolysis triggered by FSH is hypothesized.

BACKGROUND: Cellular entry of SARS-CoV-2 has been shown to rely on angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptors, whose expression in the testis is among the highest in the body. Additionally, the risk of mortality seems higher among male COVID-19 patients, and though much has been published since the first cases of COVID-19, there remain unanswered questions regarding SARS-CoV-2 impact on testes and potential consequences for reproductive health. We investigated testicular alterations in non-vaccinated deceased COVID-19-patients, the precise location of the virus, its replicative activity, and the immune, vascular, and molecular fluctuations involved in the pathogenesis. RESULTS: We found that SARS-CoV-2 testicular tropism is higher than previously thought and that reliable viral detection in the testis requires sensitive nanosensors or RT-qPCR using a specific methodology. Through an in vitro experiment exposing VERO cells to testicular macerates, we observed viral content in all samples, and the subgenomic RNA's presence reinforced the replicative activity of SARS-CoV-2 in testes of the severe COVID-19 patients. The cellular structures and viral particles, observed by transmission electron microscopy, indicated that macrophages and spermatogonial cells are the main SARS-CoV-2 lodging sites, where new virions form inside the endoplasmic reticulum Golgi intermediate complex. Moreover, we showed infiltrative infected monocytes migrating into the testicular parenchyma. SARS-CoV-2 maintains its replicative and infective abilities long after the patient's infection. Further, we demonstrated high levels of angiotensin II and activated immune cells in the testes of deceased patients. The infected testes show thickening of the tunica propria, germ cell apoptosis, Sertoli cell barrier loss, evident hemorrhage, angiogenesis, Leydig cell inhibition, inflammation, and fibrosis. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that high angiotensin II levels and activation of mast cells and macrophages may be critical for testicular pathogenesis. Importantly, our findings suggest that patients who become critically ill may exhibit severe alterations and harbor the active virus in the testes.

A 12-year-old Standardbred stallion presented with a 5-month history of a growing mass in the left testis as well as an overall decrease in left testicular size. Palpation and ultrasonography of the left testis revealed a firm, hypoechoic, clearly delineated soft tissue mass in the craniolateral portion of the testis that measured 2.5 × 2.3 × 1.9 cm. Two smaller, hypoechoic regions also were visible ultrasonographically in the left testis, suggesting the presence of multifocal/multicentric neoplasia. The affected testis was very small (testicular volume of 40.3 cm3). The right testis was significantly larger (144.3 cm3), and the parenchyma was ultrasonographically normal. Due to the concern that these findings could indicate the presence of a more aggressive tumor type, unilateral orchiectomy was performed. Multiple soft tissue masses were identified grossly, and histopathologic evaluation identified the larger mass as a Sertoli cell tumor and the two smaller masses as mixed sex cord-stromal tumors with Sertoli cell and Leydig cell differentiation. To our knowledge, this the first report of concurrent Sertoli cell and mixed sex cord-stromal tumors in a single descended equine testis.

BACKGROUND: The suspicion of a disorder of sex development (DSD) often arises at birth, when the newborn presents with ambiguous genitalia, or even during prenatal ultrasound assessments. Less frequently, the aspect of the external genitalia is typically female or male, and the diagnosis of DSD may be delayed until a karyotype is performed for another health issue, or until pubertal age when a girl presents with absence of thelarche and/or menarche or a boy consults for gynaecomastia and/or small testes. SUMMARY: In this review, we provide a practical, updated approach to clinical and hormonal laboratory workup of the newborn, the child, and the adolescent with a suspected DSD. We focus on how to specifically address the diagnostic approach according to the age and presentation. KEY MESSAGE: We particularly highlight the importance of a detailed anatomic description of the external and internal genitalia, adequate imaging studies or surgical exploration, the assessment of reproductive hormone levels - especially testosterone, anti-Müllerian hormone, 17-hydroxyprogesterone, and gonadotropins - and karyotyping.

Anti-müllerian hormone (AMH) is 1 of the 2 testicular hormones involved in male development of the genitalia during fetal life. When the testes differentiate, AMH is secreted by Sertoli cells and binds to its specific receptor type II (AMHR2) on the müllerian ducts, inducing their regression. In the female fetus, the lack of AMH allows the müllerian ducts to form the fallopian tubes, the uterus, and the upper part of the vagina. The human AMH gene maps to 19p13.3 and consists of 5 exons and 4 introns spanning 2,764 bp. The AMHR2 gene maps to 12q13.13, consists of 11 exons, and is 7,817 bp long. Defects in the AMH pathway are the underlying etiology of a subgroup of disorders of sex development (DSD) in 46,XY patients. The condition is known as the persistent müllerian duct syndrome (PMDS), characterized by the existence of a uterus and fallopian tubes in a boy with normally virilized external genitalia. Approximately 200 cases of patients with PMDS have been reported to date with clinical, biochemical, and molecular genetic characterization. An updated review is provided in this paper. With highly sensitive techniques, AMH and AMHR2 expression has also been detected in other tissues, and massive sequencing technologies have unveiled variants in AMH and AMHR2 genes in hitherto unsuspected conditions.

Background: Testicular neoplasms in dogs are more frequent than in other animal species, representing the most common tumors in elderly subjects after skin neoplasms. In cryptorchid subjects, the risk of neoplastic degeneration is high. The cytological examination is essential to differentiate the type of neoplasia and to determinate the best diagnostic approach. Aim of this report was to describe clinical and histopathological features of a dog with coexistence of Sertoli cell and interstitial endocrine cell tumors in a non-cryptorchid dog. Case: A 9-year-old non-neutered male dog, German Spitz breed, was presented to the veterinary clinic. On clinical examination, the dog had a body condition (BCS 6/9), pink mucous membranes, capillary refill time (CRT) < 2 sec, lymph nodes of normal size, afebrile, normal heart and respiratory rate. The abdomen was depressible to palpation, without pain, the skin appeared hyperpigmented, with generalized presence of comedones, pendular foreskin and absence of hair at the abdominal level, in the ventral portion of the trunk and neck, scant hair also at the level of the inner thighs and in perianal. At ultrasounds examinations, the right testicle presented a hypoechoic circular focal lesion, in the caudal pole, of 0.7 cm in diameter, well defined, echogenicity and a remnant of normal echostructure, smooth and regular margins; the left testicle showed an increase in size, irregular margins, with a heterogeneous echo structure, given by hypoechoic areas, referred to cysts, hemorrhagic or necrotic areas. The hemogram reported slightly microcytic and normochromic regenerative anemia. The leukogram showed monocytosis. The absence of the typical stress leukogram characterized by neutrophilia, lymphopenia and eosinopenia, and the reduction of ALP allows to rule out Cushing's disease. In order to rule out hypothyroidism due to the inhibitory effect of estrogens on the release of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) the concentration of total thyroxine was analyzed, reporting normal values excluding hypothyroidism. Blood oestradiol 17-ß (E2) concentration was increased, with a normal testosterone (T) concentration of 0.30 ng/mL. Given the suspicion of the presence of testicular tumors, castration was performed by the surgical excision of both gonads, after ruling out the presence of abdominal or pulmonary metastases by chest and abdominal radiography. Discussion: The clinical, histopathological findings supported the diagnosis of testicular tumors. According to the pathological report, both gonads presented parenchymal nodular neoplastic nodular areas referring to the Sertoli sustentacular cells in the right testicle, to the proliferation of Leydig interstitial cells in the left one. The nodule in the left testicle was unencapsulated and showed a solid-diffuse pattern. Neoplastic cells were irregular polygonal, medium to large in size with moderate nucleus/cytoplasm ratio and moderate anisocytosis. In the right testicle, the nodule was heterogeneous in consistency and a diffuse pattern was present. Neoplastic cells were polygonal morphology, had a moderate nucleus/cytoplasm ratio and were organized tubules lined and obliterated the extensive cell growth. Bilateral orchiectomy allowed to improve the clinical signs, and 3 months after surgery, the animal was in good health, with evident improvement skin lesions. The E2 analysis was repeated, detecting normal values, demonstrating that testicular neoplasm in this patient were involved in E2 production; also T concentration decreased considerably from 0.30 to < 0.07 values.

The monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP-1) belongs to the CC chemokine family and acts in the recruitment of C-C motif chemokine receptor 2 (CCR2)-positive immune cell types to inflammation sites. In testis, the MCP-1/CCR2 axis has been associated with the macrophage population's functional regulation, which presents significant functions supporting germ cell development. In this context, herein, we aimed to investigate the role of the chemokine receptor CCR2 in mice testicular environment and its impact on male sperm production. Using adult transgenic mice strain that had the CCR2 gene replaced by a red fluorescent protein gene, we showed a stage-dependent expression of CCR2 in type B spermatogonia and early primary spermatocytes. Several parameters related to sperm production were reduced in the absence of CCR2 protein, such as Sertoli cell efficiency, meiotic index, and overall yield of spermatogenesis. Daily sperm production decreased by almost 40%, and several damages in the seminiferous tubules were observed. Significant reduction in the expression of important genes related to the Sertoli cell function (Cnx43, Vim, Ocln, Spna2) and meiosis initiation (Stra8, Pcna, Prdm9, Msh5) occurred in comparison to controls. Also, the number of macrophages significantly decreased in the absence of CCR2 protein, along with a disturbance in Leydig cell steroidogenic activity. In summary, our results show that the non-activation of the MCP-1/CCR2 axis disturbs the testicular homeostasis, interfering in macrophage population, meiosis initiation, blood-testis barrier function, and androgen synthesis, leading to the malfunction of seminiferous tubules, decreased testosterone levels, defective sperm production, and lower fertility index.

Seminiferous tubules physically connect to the rete testis through short segments called the transition region (TR). During fetal development, this specialized junction is considered the initial site where testis cords begin to form and to grow in length well beyond birth and into adulthood and form convoluted tubular cores. Mitotic activity of the Sertoli cell, the somatic cell of the epithelium, ceases before puberty, but modified Sertoli cells in the TR remain immature and capable of proliferation. This review presents what is known about this specialized region of the testis, with an emphasis on the morphological, molecular and physiological features, which support the hypothesis that this short region of epithelial transition serves as a specialized niche for undifferentiated Sertoli cells and spermatogonial stem cells. Also, the region is populated by an elevated number of immune cells, suggesting an important activity in monitoring and responding to any leakage of autoantigens, as sperm enter the rete testis. Several structure/function characteristics of the transition region are discussed and compared across species.

Bisphenols are a group of environmental endocrine-disrupting chemicals that produce alterations in the expression of intercellular junction proteins of the Blood-Testis Barrier (BTB) involved in spermatogenesis. The association between bisphenol exposure and BTB protein expression is controversial. Therefore, we performed this systematic review and meta-analysis to clarify bisphenol effects on Sertoli cell BTB protein expression in vitro. The Standardized Mean Difference (SMD) with a 95 % confidence interval (95 % CI) was used to evaluate the association between alterations in the BTB protein expression and bisphenol exposure in vitro. Six articles were included in the meta-analysis. Bisphenol-A (BPA) exposure at 200 µM was associated with significant decrease in BTB protein expression (SMD = -2.70, 95 %CI: -3.59, -1.80, p het = 0.46, p = <0.00001). In the moderate (40-50 µM) and low dose (<25 µM), no significant associations were obtained. We also found a non-monotonic dose-response curve of bisphenol effect in ZO-1 protein expression; low and high doses presented a significant decrease compared to control, while moderate dose presented no change. The current temporary Tolerable Daily Intake (tTDI) of BPA is 4 µg/kg bw/day. The 5-25 µM doses of BPA are equivalent to ∼1-5 mg/kg bw, respectively. Although the low dose group (<25 µM) assessed doses below the previous NOAEL value, these doses are above the current tTDI. Thus, it is necessary to conduct more studies with lower bisphenol concentrations to avoid underestimating the potential adverse effects of bisphenols at doses below tTDI.

Exclusive Sertoli Cell Syndrome (ESCS) is a rare condition that has male infertility as its main consequence. It is one of the most serious forms of non-obstructive azoospermia, with a poor reproductive prognosis. In some cases, however, such as the type II of the syndrome, sperm can be recovered through testicular puncture and subsequent ICSI, with a 13% success rate. This article aims to report the case of an azoospermic 35-year-old patient, with no other significant changes in complementary exams. After percutaneous puncture of the epididymis and biopsy with no sperm, we diagnosed ESCS, and indicated IVF with donor semen.

Carbamazepine (CBZ) is used in the control of seizure and affective disorders, causing hypothyroidism. Thyroid hormones regulate the Sertoli cell proliferation and differentiation. Clinical aspects must be considered since epileptic fertile women need to continuously use CBZ during pregnancy and lactation. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of CBZ on testis development of rat offspring from dams treated during pregnancy/lactation. Rat dams received CBZ (20 mg kg-1  day-1 ) or vehicle by intra-peritoneal route during gestation and lactation. Progenies were euthanised at 4, 14, 41, 63 and 93-days post-partum (dpp) for the evaluation of T3, T4 and TSH plasma total levels. Testicular cross sections were submitted to anti-Ki67, anti-PCNA, anti-p27kip1 and anti-transferrin immunolabelling for the evaluation of Sertoli cells. There was a significant reduction in p27kip1 -positive Sertoli cell numerical densities and an increase in TSH level at 14 dpp. CBZ exposure affected the volume density of transferrin-positive immunolabelling at 63 dpp. These results suggest that CBZ may cause a dysregulation of the controller system of thyroid hormones homeostasis leading to an increase in the proliferation rate at the neonatal phase and a differentiation delay of the Sertoli cell, culminating in an altered function at late puberty. The occurrence of hypothyroidism cannot be completely discarded.

Philander frenatus is an important marsupial for the maintenance and conservation of the Atlantic Rainforest, however, it has biological characteristics that are still little explored. The study of the reproductive biology is an important key to understand the species reproductive strategies and to improve the development of conservation and management activities. The present study aimed to conduct a histological and morphometric investigation of the testis structure and function of P. frenatus. The average body and testicular weight were 445 g and 0.74 g, respectively, with a gonadosomatic index of 0.17%. The seminiferous tubules occupying 64.95% of the organ, totalising 9.26 m per gram of testis. The tubulesomatic and epitheliumsomatic indexes were 0.10% and 0.07%, respectively. Philander frenatus showed cell loss of approximately 98% during the proliferative phase and the spermatogenic yield was 10.3 cells. The high loss during the mitotic phase contributed to the low spermatogenic yield. The testicular parenchyma was composed of 35% of intertubular components, one of the highest proportions observed in mammals. Leydig cells were responsible for approximately 25% of the testes, followed by lymphatic space (6.44%), blood vessels and connective tissue (4% together). The organisation of the intertubular components resembles the Fawcett III category. The volume and number of Leydig cell per gram of testis were 2,627.12 µm3 and 91.28 × 106 cells, respectively. High investment in the intertubular compartment, specifically number and volume of Leydig cells in P. frenatus is consistent with territorial behaviour and polygynic mating system, which have greater androgenic capacity.

Besides having medical applications, comparative studies on reproductive biology are very useful, providing, for instance, essential knowledge for basic, conservation and biotechnological research. In order to maintain the reproductive potential and the survival of all vertebrate species, both sperm and steroid production need to occur inside the testis. From the approximately fifty thousand vertebrate species still alive, very few species are already investigated; however, our knowledge regarding Sertoli cell biology is quite good. In this regard, it is already known that since testis differentiation the Sertoli cells are the somatic cells in charge of supporting and orchestrating germ cells during development and full spermatogenesis in adult animals. In the present review, we highlight key aspects related to Sertoli cell biology in vertebrates and show that this key testis somatic cell presents huge and intrinsic plasticity, particularly when cystic (fish and amphibians) and non-cystic (reptiles, birds and mammals) spermatogenesis is compared. In particular, we briefly discuss the main aspects related to Sertoli cells functions, interactions with germ cells, Sertoli cells proliferation and efficiency, as well as those regarding spermatogonial stem cell niche regulation, which are crucial aspects responsible for the magnitude of sperm production. Most importantly, we show that we could greatly benefit from investigations using different vertebrate experimental models, mainly now that there is a big concern regarding the decline in human sperm counts caused by a multitude of factors.

Studies with 6-n-propyl-2-thiouracil (PTU) in laboratory rodents have shown that transient neonatal hypothyroidism leads to increased Sertoli cell (SC) number, testis size and sperm production. However, scarce and inconclusive data are available for farm animals. In the present study, Piau pigs received PTU in a gel capsule containing 8 mg/kg of body weight for 14 weeks starting from the first week of age, whereas control animals received only the vehicle. Blood samples were collected during the experimental period for hormonal evaluation in the serum. The animals were orchiectomized at adulthood and had their testes used for histomorphometric analysis. Indicating that the PTU concentration used was effective in promoting hypothyroidism, PTU-treated pigs showed a 30% lower body weight and reduced thyroxine levels (p < 0.05) during the treatment period. At adulthood, the body weight was similar in both groups but, surprisingly, PTU-treated pigs showed 30% lower testis weight (p < 0.05). In general, treated pigs presented increased follicle-stimulating hormone levels, whereas testosterone levels tended to be lower from 9 to 23 weeks of age. No significant differences were observed for estradiol, Leydig cell volume and number, tubular diameter, SC number per gram of testis, SC efficiency and meiotic index. However, seminiferous tubule occupancy, total tubular length, SC number per testis, and daily sperm production per testis and per gram of testis (DSP/g/T) were significantly lower (p < 0.05) in PTU-treated pigs. Therefore, in contrast to laboratory rodents, our results showed that SC proliferation and DSP/g/T (spermatogenic efficiency) in Piau pigs is diminished by postnatal PTU treatment.

Mice are widely used as experimental models due to several positive characteristics and in particular their suitability for studies involving molecular biology and transgenesis. Despite the large number of mice strains currently available, the literature regarding their basic reproductive biology is still relatively scarce. Herein, we comparatively evaluated several important and correlated parameters related to testis structure and function in sexually mature male mice of inbred (C57BL/6, n = 19; BALB/c, n = 17) and outbred (Swiss, n = 17) strains, frequently utilized in research. Swiss mice presented significant variation for many parameters evaluated, including higher sperm production, mainly when compared to the C57BL/6 strain. However, some key parameters such as the duration of spermatogenesis, the Sertoli cell number per testis, and the spermatogenic efficiency were similar among the different strains. Although presenting significantly higher Leydig cell (LC) proportion and numbers per testis gram and per testis, the anogenital index was smaller in Swiss mice. Estradiol levels were lower in C57BL/6, whereas testosterone levels and 3ß-HSD expression were similar among strains. Regarding the LC/macrophages relationship, in comparison to the literature, we reported a much higher contribution of macrophages to the mouse intertubule. Thus, we estimated that there are around 1.6 macrophages per LC in BALB/c mice and this intriguing finding could be relevant to testis function in overall and spermatogonial biology in particular. Taken together, our results highlight the importance of knowing more accurately the testis structure and function in the different mice strains available for research, particularly when a specific testis parameter is being investigated.

RESUMEN Introducción: Los tumores de Células de Sertoli son una entidad rara, con una frecuencia de 0,2-0,5 % del cáncer de ovario. El diagnóstico inicial de este tipo de tumores es difícil, debido a las variedades histológicas que presenta y a su diferenciación. Objetivo: Demostrar el valor del completamiento del proceso diagnóstico con técnicas de inmunohistoquímica en tumores ováricos para identificar una variante rara como el tumor de Células de Sertoli. Presentación del caso: Se presenta un caso de un tumor de ovario primitivo de Células de Sertoli en una paciente de 43 años de edad, con antecedentes personales de hipotiroidismo, intervenida quirúrgicamente por un tumor sólido del ovario derecho en el Hospital General Docente "Dr. Agostino Neto". En el intraoperatorio, se encontró un tumor gigante de aspecto maligno. El resultado anatomopatológico informó un tumor carcinoide típico. La paciente fue remitida al Instituto Nacional de Oncología y Radiobiología, donde la inmunohistoquímica de la biopsia informó un tumor de Células de Sertoli. Actualmente la paciente se encuentra asintomática. Conclusiones: El diagnóstico anatomopatológico preciso y la inmunohistoquímica correcta son muy importantes para el manejo y tratamiento de este tipo de tumor.


ABSTRACT Introduction: Sertoli cell tumors are a rare entity with an incidence of ovarian cancer of 0,2-0,5 %. The initial diagnosis of this type of tumors is difficult to make due to the histological varieties and its differentiation. Objective: To demonstrate the value of immunochemical techniques in the completion of the diagnostic process of ovarian tumors aimed at identifying a rare variant such as Sertoli cell tumor. Case presentation: A 43-year old woman with a primitive Sertoli cell tumor of the ovary is presented. The patient had personal history of hypothyroidism. She underwent surgery at "Dr. Agostinho Neto" General Teaching Hospital because she had been diagnosed with a solid tumor of the right ovary. During the intraoperative period, a giant tumor with a malignant appearance was found. The pathological result reported a typical carcinoid tumor. The patient was referred to the National Institute of Oncology and Radiobiology where the immunohistochemistry of the biopsy reported a Sertoli cell tumor. Currently, the patient is asymptomatic. Conclusions: The accurate pathological diagnosis and the correct immunohistochemistry are very important for the management and treatment of this type of tumor.
