RESUMO

Herbicides with desiccant actions may be used to anticipate the harvesting of soybean seeds. This technique aims to minimize the negative influence of biotic and abiotic factors on seed physiological quality at the end of the plant cycle. However, forced seed maturation with the application of herbicides can compromise the acquisition of seed quality components, especially longevity. Thus, the objective of this research was to evaluate the physiological quality of soybean seeds subjected to forced maturation with desiccants. The experiment was performed in a completely randomized design, with a treatment consisting of soybean plants subjected to the application of herbicides with desiccant action at stage R7.3 and another that underwent the natural process of maturation, that is, without herbicide application. The herbicide used was Paraquat. Seed germination, vigor (first germination count, dry mass, seedling length, time to reach 50% germination(t50), emergence index, and emergence speed), and longevity(P50) were evaluated. The herbicides did not affect germination (normal seedlings). However, the acquisition of vigor and longevity, and the preservation of seed vigor during storage were affected. Thus, the results indicate that the application of herbicide with desiccant action interrupts the process of acquisition of seed physiological quality, notably longevity in soybean seeds.

RESUMO

Seed physiology is related to functional and metabolic traits of the seed-seedling transition. In this sense, modeling the kinetics, uniformity and capacity of a seed sample plays a central role in designing strategies for trade, food, and environmental security. Thus, POMONA is presented as an easy-to-use multiplatform software designed to bring several logistic and linearized models into a single package, allowing for convenient and fast assessment of seed germination and or longevity, even if the data has a non-Normal distribution. POMONA is implemented in JavaScript using the Quasar framework and can run in the Microsoft Windows operating system, GNU/Linux, and Android-powered mobile hardware or on a web server as a service. The capabilities of POMONA are showcased through a series of examples with diaspores of corn and soybean, evidencing its robustness, accuracy, and performance. POMONA can be the first step for the creation of an automatic multiplatform that will benefit laboratory users, including those focused on image analysis.

Tests for germination, first germination count, seedling length and seedling dry mass were performed. The seeds of the Basal and Intermediate positions present germination between 94 and 98%, higher than the Apical position. The first germination count and the tests of seedling length and dry mass showed a low level of vigour for all treatments. The seeds of the Basal and Intermediate positions of var. of landrace maize Amarelão and Ferrinho showed higher viability, showing that their selection, with the disposal of Apical seeds, demonstrates potential as selection method for small farmers. However, regardless of the position on the ear, the seeds analyzed showed a low level of vigour.(AU)

RESUMO

Biological nitrogen fixation in soybean is enhanced when seed is treated with cobalt (Co) and molybdenum (Mo) prior to planting. In this study, our objective was to verify if Co and Mo application during the reproductive phase of the crop increases seed Co and Mo concentration without adverse effects on seed quality. Two experiments were conducted. First, we investigated foliar and soil Co and Mo application under greenhouse conditions. Next, we validated the results obtained in the first study. The treatments for both experiments consisted of Co doses combined with Mo, and a control without Co and Mo application. The foliar application was more efficient in producing enriched Co and Mo seed; meanwhile, as Co doses increased so did Co and Mo concentrations in the seed. There were no adverse effects on nutrition, development, quality, and yield of parent plants and seed when these micronutrients were applied. The seed showed higher germination, vigor, and uniformity for the development of soybean seedlings. We concluded that the application of 20 g ha-1 Co and 800 g ha-1 Mo via foliar application at the reproductive stage of soybean increased germination rate and achieved the best growth and vigor index of enriched seed.

RESUMO

The use of mixed mineral fertilizers consisting of macro- and micronutrients, which are already routinely used for leaf fertilization, in the treatment of corn and soybean seeds would positively influence germination and vigor, consequently improving growth and seedling development. This study aimed to evaluate the physiological potential of corn and soybean seeds treated with mixed mineral fertilizers. The seed treatment efficiency test with mixed mineral fertilizers was conducted at the Federal University of Jataí-UFJ-using Vital®, Lança®, Ídolo®, Massivo®, and their combinations. The treatments consisted of two controls for soybean and three for corn. Analysis of variance was performed using the F-test (p ≤ 0.05), and when there was significance, the means were compared using the Scott-Knott test (p ≤ 0.05). The mixed mineral fertilizers Vital® + Massivo® (T6), Lança® + Ídolo® (T7), and Vital® + Lança® + Ídolo® (T10) used in the seed treatment benefit the development of soybean (NS7667 IPRO) seeds. The treatments for corn (MG744 PWU) had little effect on germination and seedling development. The use of mixed mineral fertilizers in the seed treatments did not affect the physiological potential of the soybean and corn seeds, keeping the lots with germination values within commercialization standards.

RESUMO

In recent years, technological innovations have allowed significant advances in the diagnosis of seed quality. Seeds with superior physiological quality are those with the highest level of physiological maturity and the integration of rapid and precise methods to separate them contributes to better performance in the field. Autofluorescence-spectral imaging is an innovative technique based on fluorescence signals from fluorophores present in seed tissues, which have biological implications for seed quality. Thus, through this technique, it would be possible to classify seeds in different maturation stages. To test this, we produced plants of a commercial cultivar (MG/BR 46 "Conquista") and collected the seeds at five reproductive (R) stages: R7.1 (beginning of maturity), R7.2 (mass maturity), R7.3 (seed disconnected from the mother plant), R8 (harvest point), and R9 (final maturity). Autofluorescence signals were extracted from images captured at different excitation/emission combinations. In parallel, we investigated physical parameters, germination, vigor and the dynamics of pigments in seeds from different maturation stages. To verify the accuracy in predicting the seed maturation stages based on autofluorescence-spectral imaging, we created machine learning models based on three algorithms: (i) random forest, (ii) neural network, and (iii) support vector machine. Here, we reported the unprecedented use of the autofluorescence-spectral technique to classify the maturation stages of soybean seeds, especially using the excitation/emission combination of chlorophyll a (660/700 nm) and b (405/600 nm). Taken together, the machine learning algorithms showed high performance segmenting the different stages of seed maturation. In summary, our results demonstrated that the maturation stages of soybean seeds have their autofluorescence-spectral identity in the wavelengths of chlorophylls, which allows the use of this technique as a marker of seed maturity and superior physiological quality.

RESUMO

Seeds of high physiological quality are defined by their superior germination capacity and uniform seedling establishment. Here, it was investigated whether multispectral images combined with machine learning models can efficiently categorize the quality of peanut seedlots. The seed quality from seven lots was assessed traditionally (seed weight, water content, germination, and vigor) and by multispectral images (area, length, width, brightness, chlorophyll fluorescence, anthocyanin, and reflectance: 365 to 970 nm). Seedlings from the seeds of each lot were evaluated for their photosynthetic capacity (fluorescence and chlorophyll index, F0, Fm, and Fv/Fm) and stress indices (anthocyanin and NDVI). Artificial intelligence features (QDA method) applied to the data extracted from the seed images categorized lots with high and low quality. Higher levels of anthocyanin were found in the leaves of seedlings from low quality seeds. Therefore, this information is promising since the initial behavior of the seedlings reflected the quality of the seeds. The existence of new markers that effectively screen peanut seed quality was confirmed. The combination of physical properties (area, length, width, and coat brightness), pigments (chlorophyll fluorescence and anthocyanin), and light reflectance (660, 690, and 780 nm), is highly efficient to identify peanut seedlots with superior quality (98% accuracy).

RESUMO

Homeopathy is a technique approved by the MAPA for organic production systems. Experiments demonstrating the effectiveness of homeopathy in agriculture are essential. Aims: To evaluate the effects of homeopathic treatment on soybean seed germination. Methodology: The experiment was performed in MS-Brazil. An area of 70 m² was used, divided into two comparison plots of 30 m² each. The soil of plot 1 (treated group) was treated with 5.25 kg of powdered Lithothamniummixed with 250 ml of 30% hydroalcoholic solution (HS) containing homeopathic ingredients. The soil of plot 2 (control group) was treated with thesame preparationbutwithout homeopathic ingredients. Additionally, the 400 seeds assigned toplot 1 were treated with 0,3 ml of a solution made up of 10 ml of 30% HS with homeopathic ingredients dilutedin 300 ml of water. The 400 seeds assigned toplot 2 were treated with 0.3 ml of a solutionmade up of 10 ml of HS without homeopathic ingredients diluted in 300 ml of water. The homeopathic ingredients Sulph 9C, Mag-c12C, and Calc-p 9C were used on soil and seed treatment. The selection and prescription of those ingredients followed Materia Medica instructions. The experiment was conducted using randomized design and 400 seeds per group were sown. Results and discussion: In plot 1, anaverage of 11 seeds per m² germinated, adding up to 330 germinated seeds at a percentage of 82.5%. In plot 2, an average of 7 seeds per m² germinated, adding up to 210 germinated seeds at a percentage of 52.5%. The frequency of seed germinationin both groups was assessed by the Chi-square test to check for significant differences(p<0.05). There was a statistical difference (p<0.05) in the seed germination in the treated group (n=330) compared to the control group (n=210). Conclusion:Homeopathic compounds can be used as a viable treatment for soybean germination.

RESUMO

Efficient methodologies for automated seed quality evaluations are important for the seed industry. Advanced seed technology research requires the use of adequate methods to ensure good seed performance under adverse environmental conditions; thus, providing producers with detailed, quick, and accurate information on structural seed integrity and ensuring vigorous production. To address this problem, this study aimed to determine Brachiaria brizantha (Marandu cv., Piatã cv. and Xaraés cv.) seed quality through radiographic imaging analyses associated with vigor tests and anatomical characterizations. Brachiaria seed cultivars displaying different physical and physiological attributes were selected and subjected to the 1000-seed weight test, water content determinations, X-ray analyses, germination tests, and anatomical characterizations. The X-ray analyses made it possible to establish a relationship between the X-ray images and other determined variables. Furthermore, the X-ray images can indicate evidence of internal and external damage that could later compromise germination. The Marandu and Piatã cultivars presented the highest germination percentages, germination speed indices, normal seedling development, and cellular structure preservation compared to the Xaraés cultivar. To summarize, X-ray analyses are efficient methods used for the selection of higher physical quality cultivars and can aid in the decision-making processes of companies and seed producers worldwide.

RESUMO

In tropical grass seed production fields, reducing plant size can increase the solar radiation to the base of the plant canopy and improve the quantity and quality of the seeds produced. This research studied the responses of the production components, the productivity, and the seed quality of U. brizantha cv. MG-5 to different canopy sequential cuttings under cultivation conditions in rain fed systems. Two experiments were carried out (agricultural year 2015/16 (s1) and 2016/17 (s2)) in a randomized block experimental design with four repetitions. The treatments consisted of sequential cut-off, indicating the month of the last cut and the agricultural year: for the 2015/16 agricultural year: Aug - s1, Sep - s1, Oct - s1, Nov - s1, Dec - s1, Jan - s1, and Feb - s1; for the 2016/17 agricultural year: Aug - s2; Set - s2; Nov - s2; Dec - s2; Jan - s2, and Feb - s2. Plant growth biometrics, seed quality variables, and productivity were evaluated. The sequential cut strategy increased the productivity and quality of pure seeds when the final cuts were done between November and December. Cuts performed after December increased the reproductive components. However, in the region in question, rainfall levels compromised seed filling; and therefore productivity and quality since the flowering of these cuttings (January and February) occurs in May.

Wheat is one of the most important cereals grown in the world, and in Brazil, increasing national production is still a challenge. Nitrogen (N) supply can favor grain yield and the physiological quality of wheat seeds. However, the definition of adequate N rate and fertilization timing must consider genotype, cultivation environment, and initial seed vigor level. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of initial seed vigor and the combinations of rates and timings of N application on grain yield and seed physiological quality of wheat cultivars under different edaphoclimatic conditions. The experiment was carried out in Londrina and Ponta Grossa, state of Paraná, in a randomized block design in a 2 × 2 × 7 factorial scheme, with four replicates. Treatments consisted of two seed vigor levels (vigorous and non-vigorous seeds), two wheat cultivars (BRS Gralha-Azul and BRS Sabiá) and seven combinations of fertilization timings and N rates (kg ha-1) (control-0N; 20N at sowing and 60N at tillering; 40N at sowing; 80N at sowing; 40N at sowing and 40N at tillering; 40N at tillering; 80N at tillering). Number of emerged seedlings, vegetation index, shoot dry matter, number of fertile spikes m-2 and grain yield were evaluated. Additionally, the physiological potential of seeds produced in Londrina was evaluated by the testes of first count, germination, seedling emergence in sand and emergence speed index. The climatic conditions during the experiment, in both cultivation environments, were similar to average historical records, with some periods of water deficit. The highest grain yield was obtained with the BRS Gralha-Azul in Londrina, and with BRS Sabiá in Ponta Grossa. The use of vigorous seeds favored the stand establishment and the response of plants to N fertilization. The treatments 40N + 40N, and 40N + 0N favored the majority of evaluated variables. Both cultivars showed potential for the production of high physiological potential seeds in Londrina environment. Inadequate N supply impairs wheat grain yield and seed production.(AU)

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of initial vigor level and sowing densities on the productive performance of the plants and the physiological performance of the seeds of two wheat cultivars in two cultivation environments. The experiment was carried out in the cities of Londrina and Ponta Grossa, Paraná, Brazil, in a randomized block design with four replications, following a 2 × 2 × 4 factorial scheme with two levels of seed vigor (high and low), two cultivars (BRS Gralha-Azul and BRS Sabiá), and four sowing densities (150, 250, 350, and 450 seeds m-²). The following characteristics were evaluated: emerged seedlings, shoot dry matter, spike density, vegetation index, and grain yield. Additionally, the physiological potential of the seeds produced in Londrina was evaluated by first germination count, germination, accelerated aging, seedling emergence, and emergence speed index tests. The increase in density up to 450 seeds m-2 favored the productive performance of the crop in both cultivation environments; however, it reduced the physiological performance of the seeds produced in Londrina. The cultivars BRS Gralha-Azul and BRS Sabiá had better performance and grain yield in Londrina and Ponta Grossa, respectively. High-vigor seeds favored the establishment of the stand, especially under unfavorable environmental conditions.

RESUMO

Seed priming is widely used in commercial seeds and its main function is to accelerate and synchronize seed germination. Undesirably, primed seeds show reduced longevity and treatments like heat shock have been shown to improve longevity in primed seeds. Nonetheless, the effect of heat shock treatment on primed seeds at the mRNA level is not known. Thus, the aim of this work was to investigate the effect of heat shock treatment on the longevity of primed tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) seeds at the physiological and transcriptome levels. Tomato seeds were primed and dried (control). Alternatively, primed seeds were subjected to heat shock treatment (38 °C/32 % relative humidity) before drying. Germination, vigor and longevity were evaluated. Transcriptome analysis was performed by RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) from biological samples collected immediately after priming and another samples collected from primed seeds followed by the heat shock treatments. The gene expression was validated by quantitative real time PCR (RT-qPCR). We showed that applying heat shock treatment after priming increased germination speed, enhanced seed longevity and preserved the vigor during storage of primed tomato seeds. Through transcriptome analysis, 368 differentially expressed genes were identified, from which 298 genes were up-regulated and 70 were down-regulated. We showed the increase of mRNA levels of HEAT SHOCK FACTOR-like and HEAT SHOCK PROTEIN-like chaperone genes, suggesting the involvement of the proteins coded by these transcripts in the enhancement of longevity in primed tomato seeds. The heat shock treatment after priming enhances and preserves the vigor of tomato primed seeds during storage. In addition, improves seed longevity through the increase in the expression of transcripts related to protection by response to stress.

RESUMO

Conventional methods for detecting seed-borne fungi are laborious and time-consuming, requiring specialized analysts for characterization of pathogenic fungi on seed. Multispectral imaging (MSI) combined with machine vision was used as an alternative method to detect Drechslera avenae (Eidam) Sharif [Helminthosporium avenae (Eidam)] in black oat seeds (Avena strigosa Schreb). The seeds were inoculated with Drechslera avenae (D. avenae) and then incubated for 24, 72 and 120 h. Multispectral images of non-infested and infested seeds were acquired at 19 wavelengths within the spectral range of 365 to 970 nm. A classification model based on linear discriminant analysis (LDA) was created using reflectance, color, and texture features of the seed images. The model developed showed high performance of MSI in detecting D. avenae in black oat seeds, particularly using color and texture features from seeds incubated for 120 h, with an accuracy of 0.86 in independent validation. The high precision of the classifier showed that the method using images captured in the Ultraviolet A region (365 nm) could be easily used to classify black oat seeds according to their health status, and results can be achieved more rapidly and effectively compared to conventional methods.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Schizolobium parahyba is a fast-growing tropical tree, with various uses: forestry, agroforestry, landscaping, boat building, cabinetmaking and light packaging. Studies of morphometry and viability of forest species seeds are important for their identification, conservation and sustainable use. The objective of the study was to describe the morphometric and viability characteristics of the seeds of S. parahyba. Seeds of free pollination of plantations from three locations in Tierralta (Córdoba - Colombia) were used. In each plantation, five trees were randomly taken and, of each, 100 seeds to estimate the morphometric characteristics and seed weight. The morphological description was made with a sample of 10 seeds. The viability was determined by the tetrazolium test in an experiment under a completely randomized design, with six treatments and four replicates of 25 seeds each. The six treatments corresponded to the combinations of three concentrations of tetrazolium (0.5; 1.0 and 1.5%) and two staining times (2 and 3 hours). The width, length, and ratio width / length of the seed showed little variation, compared to the freshweight of a seed, freshweight of 100 seeds and number of seeds per kilogram. Tetrazolium and germination tests showed similar and reliable results. The concentration of 0.5% tetrazolium, with immersion of 2 hours, was sufficient to determine the viability of seeds of S. parahyba.

Cangas (ironstone outcrops) host a specialized flora, characterized by high degree of edaphic endemism and an apparent lack of natural history knowledge of its flora. Due to intense pressure from iron ore mining this ecosystem is under threat and in need of restoration. We studied seed functional traits that are relevant for restoration, translocation and ex situ conservation in 48 species from cangas in eastern Amazon. Were determined the thermal niche breadth, classified seed dormancy and determined methods to overcome it, determined the effect of seed storage on germination, tested the association between germination traits and functional groups, and tested whether seed traits are phylogenetically conserved. We found a broad interspecific variation in most seed traits, except for seed water content. Large interspecific variation in the temperature niche breadth was found among the studied species, but only four species, showed optimum germination at high temperatures of 35-40°C, despite high temperatures under natural conditions. Only 35% of the studied species produced dormant seeds. Mechanical scarification was effective in overcoming physical dormancy and application of gibberellic acid was effective in overcoming physiological dormancy in five species. For the 29 species that seeds were stored for 24 months, 76% showed decreases in the germination percentage. The weak association between germination traits and life-history traits indicate that no particular plant functional type requires specific methods for seed-based translocations. Exceptions were the lianas which showed relatively larger seeds compared to the other growth-forms. Dormancy was the only trait strongly related to phylogeny, suggesting that phylogenetic relatedness may not be a good predictor of regeneration from seeds in cangas. Our study provides support to better manage seed sourcing, use, storage and enhancement techniques with expected reduced costs and increased seedling establishment success.

RESUMO

Bean cultivars, in addition to adaptation to the growing site, must present high productive potential and meet the consumers' requirements regarding the qualitative attributes. The objective of this work was to evaluate the yield components, yield and qualitative attributes of common-bean cultivars of carioca commercial group in the autumn-winter period, aiming to obtain information regarding the productive capacity and grain quality. The experimental design was a randomized block design with 13 treatments and four replications. The treatments consisted of bean cultivars: Pérola, BRS Estilo, BRSMG Madrepérola, BRS Notável, IAC Alvorada, IAC Imperador, IAC Milênio, IPR 139 (Juriti Claro), IPR Andorinha, TAA Bola Cheia, TAA Dama, TAA Gol e ANfc 9. All common bean cultivars stood out for grain yield, with an average value of 3,400 kg ha-1, surpassing the average yields of all Brazilian states. The cultivars BRS Estilo, IAC Alvorada, IPR Andorinha and TAA Gol presented good technological quality of the grains, highlighting the high yield of sieves and shorter cooking times. The cultivars BRS Estilo and TAA Dama presented ideal hydration time, while the cultivars Pérola, BRSMG Madrepérola and IPR 139 require more time to prepare.

The suitable establishment of a crop depends on seed quality, among another factors. However, with high production costs many producers use uncertified seeds, to reduce expenses with this input at sowing time. The objective was to evaluate germination, vigor and health of soybean seeds, diseases incidence in cvs. NS 5445 IPRO and BMX Ativa RR, whose seeds were of certified and uncertified origins, as well as yield components and grain yield of soybeans, with or without fungicides application. The experiments were conducted in the 2015/16 and 2016/17 crop season, in Erechim-RS. Two experiments were carried out in a completely randomized design (DIC): one in the laboratory, under a 2 x 2 factorial scheme (cultivar x origin); and another in the field in a homogeneous area, in a 2 x 2 factorial scheme (with/without fungicide application and certified/uncertified seed) for two cultivars, both with four replications. The variables evaluated were: germination and seed health, yield (kg ha-1), thousand grains weight (g), number of grains per plant, and incidence of foliar fungal diseases. The main fungi identified in seeds were Aspergillus sp., Penicillium sp. and Fusarium sp. The highest incidence percentage were obtained in uncertifed seeds, at two harvests. Both cultivars and origins presented the minimum germination required for commercialization, however, certified seeds had better performance for seed vigor. As for normal seedlings, there was a significant difference only for the 2016/17 crop season, with the highest percentage obtained in certified seeds (52.0% for NS 5445 and 73.5% for BMX Ativa). Best productivity was achieved with cultivation of certified seeds associated with fungicides in both crops and cultivars.[...]
