RESUMO

Schizolobium parahyba species can be found in all of South America, producing several residues that can be a major opportunity to develop activated carbon. This work presents the investigation regarding the development of a high specific surface activated carbon (981.55 m2 g-1) and its application in the adsorption of ketoprofen from the aqueous media. The ketoprofen molecules were better adhered to the adsorbent surface under acidic conditions (pH = 2), being the ideal adsorbent dosage determined as 0.7 g L-1, resulting in satisfactory values. It was found that the system reached equilibrium in 200 to 250 min depending on the initial concentration studied, achieving an adsorption capacity of 229 mg g-1. The general order was the most suitable model for describing the experimental data, with an R2 ≥ 0.9985 and MSR ≤ 63.40 (mg g-1)2. The equilibrium adsorption found that the temperature increases the adsorption capacity, achieving 447.35 mg g-1 at 328 K. Besides that, the Tóth model was the most suitable for describing the isotherms R2 ≥ 0.9990 and MSR ≤ 25.67 (mg g-1)2, indicating a heterogeneous adsorbent. The thermodynamic values found that the adsorption of ketoprofen is spontaneous (average ΔG0 of - 32.79 kJ mol-1) and endothermic (ΔH0 10.44 kJ mol-1). The treatment of simulated effluent with the developed adsorbent was efficient, removing 90% of ketoprofen, ibuprofen, and salts. It was found that the adsorbent is reaming its adsorption capacity up to the 5th cycle, progressively decreasing the adsorption capacity until the adsorption does not occur past the 12th cycle. Overall, the results demonstrated that the activated carbon from residual biomass of the Schizolobium parahyba species could be an excellent alternative in obtaining an effective adsorbent to treat wastewater-containing drugs.

Abstract The information about nutritional aspects of trees in the tropical dry forest is scarce. This investigation aims to establish a normal range of foliar nutrient concentration to four forestry species as related to their growth rates and biological nitrogen fixation capacity in the seasonally dry ecosystem at Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Foliar samples for four species: Dalbergia retusa (cocobolo), Enterolobium cyclocarpum (guanacaste), Hymenaea courbaril (guapinol or jatobá) and Schizolobium parahyba (gallinazo or pachaco), all belonging to the Fabaceae family, were analyzed for N, P, Ca, Mg, K, S, Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, B and Na. Nutrient concentration varied with species according to their ability to fix nitrogen and their rate of growth. The overall concentration of macronutrients was higher in nitrogen-fixing species compared with non-fixing species, and within each one of those groups, the species with higher growth rate presented more macronutrients than species with low growth rate. According to the concentration of foliar nutrients accumulated in the foliage, we recommend that H. courbaril and D. retusacould be grown in the region soils with medium fertility and E. cyclocarpum and S. parahyba in the more fertile soils. Values ranges of foliar concentrations considered as satisfactory presented in this work are new for D. retusa and H. courbaril and improve the scarce information available for E. cyclocarpum and S. parahyba. RESUMO

Schizolobium parahyba var. amazonicum (Huber ex Ducke) occurs naturally in the Brazilian Amazon. Currently, it is being planted extensively because of its fast growth and excellent use in forestry. Consequently, there is great interest in new strategies to increase wood production. The interaction between soil microorganisms and plants, specifically in the roots, provides essential nutrients for plant growth. These interactions can have growth-promoting effects. In this way, this study assessed the effect of the inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) on growth of S. parahyba var. amazonicum under field conditions. We used two native species of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, Claroideoglomus etunicatum (Ce), and Acaulospora sp. (Ac); two native strains of Rhizobium sp. (Rh1 and Rh2); and a non-native strain of Burkholderia sp. Different combinations of microorganisms were supplemented with chemical fertilizers (doses D1 and D2) in two planting methods, seed sowing and seedling planting. In seed sowing, the results showed that treatments with Ce/Rh1/Fertilizer D2 and Ac/No PGPR/Fertilizer D2 increased wood yield. In seedling planting, two combinations (Ac/Rh2/Fertilizer D1 and Ac/Rh1/Fertilizer D1) were more effective in increasing seedling growth. In these experiments, inoculation with AMF and PGPR increased wood yield by about 20% compared to the application of fertilizer alone.
