RESUMO

The family Profundulidae is a group of small-sized fish species distributed between southern Mexico and Honduras, where they are frequently the only fish representatives at higher elevations in the basins where they occur. We characterized their ecological niche using different methods and metrics drawn from niche modelling and by re-examining phylogenetic relationships of a recently published molecular phylogeny of this family to gain a better understanding of its biogeographic and evolutionary history. We assessed both lines of evidence from the perspective of niche conservatism to set a foundation for discussing hypotheses about the processes underlying the distribution and evolution of the group. In fish clades where the species composition is not clear, we examined whether niche classification could be informative to discriminate groups geographically and ecologically consistent with any of the different hypotheses of valid species. The characterization of the ecological niche was carried out using the Maxent algorithm under different parameterizations and the projection of the presence on the main components of the most relevant environmental coverage, and the niche comparison was calculated with two indices (D and I), both in environmental space and in that projected geographically. With the molecular data, a species tree was generated using the *BEAST method. The comparison of these data was calculated with an age-overlap correlation test. Based on the molecular phylogeny and on niche overlap analyses, we uncovered strong evidence to support the idea that ecologically similar species are not necessarily sister species. The correlation analysis for genetic distance and niche overlap was not significant (P > 0.05). In clades with taxonomic conflicts, we only identified Profundulus oaxacae as a geographically and ecologically distinct group from P. punctatus. All the evidence considered leads us to propose that Profundulidae do not show evidence of niche conservatism and that there are reasons to consider P. oaxacae as a valid species. Our study suggests that niche divergence is a driving evolutionary force that caused the diversification and speciation processes of the Profundulidae, along with the geological and climatic events that promoted the expansion or contraction of suitable environments.

The genus Rhabdochona Railliet, 1916 is one of the most speciose group of nematodes, parasites of freshwater fishes, with approximately 103 species described worldwide. Twenty-two species have been recorded in the Americas, 14 of them in Mexico. In this paper we describe a new species of Rhabdochona on the basis of light and scanning electron microscopy and molecular tools. Rhabdochona adentata n. sp. was recovered from the gallbladder of the freshwater Oaxaca killifish, Profundulus oaxacae (Meek, 1902) (Profundulidae) captured in the Río Grande, State of Oaxaca, Mexico. Rhabdochona adentata n. sp. differs markedly from its congeners by possessing an unusual prostom lacking anterior teeth, small simple deirids, and the location of the excretory pore at the level of the union of the muscular and glandular esophagus. Sequences of cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) from mitochondrial deoxyribonucleic acid and the D2 + D3 domains of the large ribosomal subunit (28S) were obtained from 3 specimens and were analyzed using maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference analyses. Phylogenetic analyses using COI and 28S genes recovered 1 new lineage of Rhabdochona. The new species is described on the basis of a detailed morphological study. This parasite represents the first species of Rhabdochona without prostomal teeth and with a different site of infection, the gallbladder.

In the present study, two new species of Gyrodactylus are described from Profundulus oaxacae, a fish endemic to the Pacific slope of Oaxaca State, Mexico. Fishes were collected within their distribution range in 5 localities in the Atoyac-Verde River. Gyrodactylus montealbani n. sp. and G. zapoteco n. sp. were erected and characterized morphologically (sclerites of the attachment apparatus and the male copulatory organ) and molecularly (sequences of the Internal Transcribed Spacer region of rDNA). The haptoral sclerites of the new species are similar to those of Gyrodactylus iunuri and Gyrodactylus tepari, both recently described from the goodeid fish Goodea atripinnis, from the Mexican States of Jalisco and Querétaro, respectively; and to Gyrodactylus xtachuna described from the poeciliid Poeciliopsis gracilis in Veracruz State, Mexico - nonetheless, these species can all be discriminated based on their marginal hook morphology. Specimens of G. montealbani n. sp. and G. zapoteco n. sp. were sequenced, and were aligned with sequences of 25 other Gyrodactylus spp. Both Maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference analyses indicated that the two new species are members of independent, well-supported lineages - these are the first Gyrodactylus species described from Profundulus oaxacae.

Freshwater fishes of Profundulidae, which until now was composed of two subgenera, represent one of the few extant fish families endemic to Mesoamerica. In this study we investigated the phylogenetic relationships and evolutionary history of the eight recognized extant species (from 37 populations) of Profundulidae using three mitochondrial and one nuclear gene markers (∼2.9 Kbp). We applied a Bayesian species delimitation method as a first approach to resolving speciation patterns within Profundulidae considering two different scenarios, eight-species and twelve-species models, obtained in a previous phylogenetic analysis. Based on our results, each of the two subgenera was resolved as monophyletic, with a remarkable molecular divergence of 24.5% for mtDNA and 7.8% for nDNA uncorrected p distances, and thus we propose that they correspond to separate genera. Moreover, we propose a conservative taxonomic hypothesis with five species within Profundulus and three within Tlaloc, although both eight-species and twelve-species models were highly supported by the bayesian species delimitation analysis, providing additional evidence of higher taxonomic diversity than currently recognized in this family. According to our divergence time estimates, the family originated during the Upper Oligocene 26 Mya, and Profundulus and Tlaloc diverged in the Upper Oligocene or Lower Miocene about 20 Mya.

During investigations of gill ectoparasites (Platyhelminthes) parasitising freshwater fish from Central America (Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Panama) and southeastern Mexico (Guerrero, Oaxaca and Chiapas), the following dactylogyrid monogenoidean were found: Urocleidoides simonae sp. n. from Profundulus punctatus (Günther) (type host), Profundulus balsanus Ahl, Profundulus guatemalensis (Günther), Profundulus kreiseri Matamoros, Shaefer, Hernández et Chakrabarty, Profundulus labialis (Günther), Profundulus oaxacae (Meek), Profundulus sp. 1 and Profundulus sp. 2 (all Profundulidae); Urocleidoides vaginoclaustroides sp. n. from Pseudoxiphophorus bimaculata (Heckel) (type host) and Poeciliopsis retropinna (Regan) (both Poeciliidae); and Urocleidoides vaginoclaustrum Jogunoori, Kritsky et Venkatanarasaiah, 2004 from P. labialis, Profundulus portillorum Matamoros et Shaefer and Xiphophorus hellerii Heckel (Poeciliidae). Urocleidoides simonae sp. n. differs from all other congeneric species in having anchors with well-differentiated roots, curved elongate shaft and short point. Urocleidoides vaginoclaustroides sp. n. most closely resembles U. vaginoclaustrum, but differs from this species mainly in the shape of its anchors (i.e. evenly curved shaft and short point vs curved shaft and elongate point extending just past the tip of the superficial anchor root). The complexity of potential hosts for species of Urocleidoides and their effect on its distribution on profundulid and poeciliid fishes are briefly discussed.

The Asian fish tapeworm, Bothriocephalus acheilognathi, has been considered one of the most dangerous parasites for cultured carp and a risk for native freshwater fish populations worldwide. This cestode is highly pathogenic for fishes especially fry. In this paper we record B. acheilognathi parasitizing the endangered and endemic freshwater fish Profundulus hildebrandi from the endorheic basin of San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico. B. acheilognathi was recorded from 10 of the 11 sampled localities, with high values of prevalence (>60%) and mean abundance (>4.50). The infection was persistent all through the year; gravid cestodes were recorded in all samples. It is assumed that B. acheilognathi entered to this area through the introduction of common carp Cyprinus carpio, for aquacultural purposes. The data presented in this paper document the successful introduction, colonization and establishment of this alien species into the endangered P. hildebrandi. Rev. Biol. Trop. 59 (3): 1099-1104. El céstodo Asiático, Bothriocephalus acheilognathi, es considerado como uno de los helmintos más peligrosos para peces de cultivo, y un riesgo potencial para las poblaciones silvestres de peces en todo el mundo. La patología que causa es grave, principalmente en larvas y juveniles de peces. En este trabajo registramos la presencia de B. acheilognathi en el pez endémico de Chiapas y amenazado de extinción, Profundulus hildebrandi, en la cuenca endorreica de San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas, México. El céstodo B. acheilognathi fue registrado en 10 de las 11 localidades muestreadas, con valores altos de prevalencia (>60%) e intensidad promedio (>4.50). Registramos esta infección durante todo el año, con presencia de céstodos grávidos en todos los meses muestreados. Asumimos que B. acheilognathi ingresó a esta área geográfica con la introducción de la carpa común, Cyprinus carpio, para acuicultura. Los datos que presentamos en este trabajo documentan la introducción exitosa, la colonización y el establecimiento de esta especie exótica de parásito sobre P. hildebrandi, especie dulceacuícola, endémica y amenazada de extinción.
