RESUMO

Overfishing constitutes a major threat affecting marine fish population worldwide, including mullet species that have been exploited by fisheries during the reproductive migration in temperate and tropical latitudes for millennia. In the present study, we investigated the relationship of fishing intensity of mullet Mugil liza during its reproductive migration and the abundance of their juveniles in an essential nursery ground for the species in the southwest Atlantic Ocean. To carry out this analysis, we used a 23-year standardized long-term time series (1997-2019) of monthly abundance of M. liza juveniles, local/regional (water temperature, salinity, water transparency and river discharge) and global (ENSO) environmental factors, along with compilations of fishing landing data for the species. Generalized Additive Models (GAM) revealed the negative effect of fishing adult populations on the abundance of juveniles when they reach the marine surf-zone and after recruiting into the estuary. Our results reinforce the importance of adequate conservation and fishery regulation policies to prevent the species' stock from collapsing.

RESUMO

This study assessed the concentrations and sources of natural and anthropogenic aliphatic (AHs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in superficial sediments collected along the Patos Lagoon estuary and in sediment cores obtained from the Cassino Beach mud bank. Levels and distribution of n-alkanes indicate terrestrial sources, overlapping with a low amount of petrogenic hydrocarbons (heavy oils). Unresolved complex mixture (UCM) was observed in all samples. On the other hand, the distribution of PAHs in the sediments showed a predominance of pyrolytic over petrogenic sources. In general, hydrocarbons (HCs) contamination in the Patos Lagoon estuary and its adjacent coastal area can be considered low, except for sites near urban or industrial effluents, where moderate to high levels of contamination were found. Concentrations of hydrocarbons were homogeneous throughout the sediment cores, suggesting that mixing processes may have occurred along the layers or that HCs inputs to the mud banks were uniform during the studied deposition period. In addition, the levels and profile of HCs in the coastal sediments were similar to those observed in the estuary. Moreover, the frequent remobilization of sediments from the mud bank towards Cassino beach does not seem to pose any threats to the local biota or beach users since the levels of contamination were relatively low and below the threshold limits of sediment quality guidelines.

RESUMO

Stable isotopes were used to evaluate the hypothesis that fish assemblages occurring in shallow and deep areas of a large coastal lagoon are structured in partially segregated trophic modules with consumers showing contrasting reliance on benthic or pelagic food sources. The results revealed that fishes in deep areas were mainly dependent on particulate organic matter in the sediment (SOM), whereas emergent macrophytes were as important as SOM to fish consumers in shallow areas. Conceptual trophic diagrams depicting relationships among basal food sources and consumers in different regions of the lagoon highlighted the greater use of multiple basal food sources by more feeding mode functional guilds in shallow water compared with the use of predominantly benthic resources (SOM) in deep areas. The findings appear to corroborate the initial hypothesis and offer complementary perspectives in understanding the role of spatial ecology in structuring coastal ecosystem function and productivity.

RESUMO

The level of cytochrome P450 1A (CYP1A) in fish is used as a typical environmental biomarker for the presence of organic contaminants. We used RT-qPCR to investigate CYP1A mRNA levels in the liver, gill and gonopodium of guppies Jenynsia multidentata and Phalloceros caudimaculatus in wetlands within the Rio Grande city (RG) which is under the influence of the Patos Lagoon Estuary (RS, Brazil). The CYP1A mRNA levels evaluated in fish liver from two locations that receive non-treated wastewater effluents (S3 and S4) and another locations near an oil refinery (S6) and an industrial complex (S7), were higher than in locations remote from those sites (S1, S2 and S5). The sum of 16 priority PAHs in sediment confirmed high levels in S4 and S6 (3914.0 and 4414.0 ng g(-1) dw, respectively) comparing to S7>S2>S3>S5>S1 (119.3, 66.3, 62.8, 16.4 and 1.7 ng g(-1) dw). J. multidentata from sites S1 to S4 that were transferred to the laboratory exhibited CYP1A induction after 24 h waterborne exposure to 1 µM betanaphtoflavone (BNF) in all organs compared to controls, except in the liver of fish from site S4. This lack of CYP1A induction by BNF indicates a CYP1A refractory phenotype in guppy. Although this characteristic possibly involves the alteration in AHR signaling or control, the mechanism of resistance is unknown. The present study provides information about the use of the use of CYP1A in South American guppies as an useful biomarker tool for environmental contamination studies.

RESUMO

Biochemical biomarkers were evaluated in the barnacle Balanus improvisus (Crustacea: Cirripedia) sampled from both polluted and reference sites in the Patos Lagoon Estuary, Southern Brazil. During winter, higher glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity was recorded in the barnacles from the polluted sites, indicating environmental exposure to contaminants. Relatively low lipid peroxide levels (LPO) were also observed in barnacles from polluted sites, indicating that oxidative stress by lipid peroxidation was not a major threat in barnacles from those sites. Seasonal differences in the GST and total oxyradical scavenging capacity (TOSC) could have contributed to the low LPO levels in the summer relative to the levels in the winter. Catalase activity and metallothionein levels were not affected by contamination or seasonality. The seasonal changes observed in biomarker responses were paralleled by the differences in temperature, which could have affected physiological responses, including the balance between pro-oxidants and antioxidants.

RESUMO

This study reports results of analysis of sediment cores collected from the Patos Lagoon estuary. This estuary receives materials from land runoff into Patos and Mirim lagoons and from exchange with the adjacent South Atlantic Ocean through a narrow inlet. Sediment from these sources is mostly natural, but additional contributions associated with source/activities related to the port of Rio Grande. The aim of this study was to estimate rates of accumulation of the sediments and to assess the significance of metal inputs from these activities relative to natural inputs. Our results indicate an average sedimentation rate of 0.3 cm/yr and that the transport of suspended solids from offshore sources into the estuary was enhanced after the deepening of the channel and construction of the breakwaters (in the early 1900). Results for metal accumulation in these sediments suggest that there have been only minor enrichments which can be attributed to anthropogenic sources.

RESUMO

The absence of hard structures which register age on crustaceans requires the use of length-based methods for age determination, and modal progression analysis (MPA) to estimate growth. In this paper, individual growth of the blue crab Callinectes sapidus Rathbun, 1896 was studied in the laboratory and in the field, and the growth curves estimated were compared. Crabs studied in the laboratory were obtained from field sampling and kept under controlled conditions (temperature = 25±2°C, and salinity = 20±5), on a water recirculating system. These animals were molt staged and measured (carapace width, taken from the last antherolateral spines in millimeters) before and after molting. Crabs used for field growth analysis were collected between 2002 and 2004 in predetermined sampling sites by using otter-trawl and renfro nets. Bertalanffy growth model was used to estimate the growth parameters of the crabs. Maximum carapace lengths were used as the estimative of the asymptotic length (157.78 mm for females and 162.71 mm for males). Growth parameters obtained from laboratory experiments were k=0.001/day; t o=-1.53; longevity= 3117 days for males and k=0.002/day; t o=-29.55; longevity= 2795 days for females. Growth parameters and longevity estimates for the field collected animals were k=0.004/day; t o=-4.23; 1267 days for males and k=0.004/day; t o=-3.71; 1260 days for females. Significant difference was observed among laboratory and field crabs, suggesting a different growth rate accordingly to the surrounding environment.

The Southern Brazil blue crab Callinectes sapidus Rathbun, 1869 is the most abundant crab of the genus Callinectes in Patos Lagoon estuary. Although this species is widely distributed throughout the Patos Lagoon estuary area, there is little information about its natural diet. This species is an important predator and has a significant influence on its prey populations. The aim of this study was to check the natural diet of blue crab through the foregut contents analysis. Crabs were collected using an otter trawl net from March 2003 to March 2004. After collected, crabs were preserved immediately in 10% formaldehyde. The carapace width, weight and sex were measured for each individual. The foregut of each crab was removed and stored in 70% ethanol. Blue crab feeds on a wide variety of sessile and slow moving invertebrates. The main item was Detritus, followed by the suspension-feeder mollusk Erodona mactroides Bosc, 1802 (Erodonidae). Sand grains and the small crustaceans of class Ostracoda, were an important component of the foregut contents, but sand grains were not considered food. Setae and pieces of Polychaeta and some seeds of submersed higher vegetation of Ruppia maritima L. (Potamogatonaceae) (beaked tasselweed), and Zannichellia palustris L. (Potamogatonaceae) (homed pondweed), were also found. This study has as purpose to provide information for a long-term protection and conservation of blue crab population and also to characterize its relationship with the macrobenthic communities in the Patos Lagoon estuary.
