Abstract Introduction: Various anthropic pressures affect the aquatic ecosystems of the foothills of Colombia. The response to environmental stressors is still unknown in bioindicator organisms such as Leptohyphidae. Objective: To determine the diversity of Leptohyphidae nymphs of the Quenane-Quenanito river, in two contrasting hydrological periods and its relationship with some physicochemical variables. Methods: In December (2014) and February (2015), organisms were collected with a Surber net at six stations along the current. Alpha and beta diversity was analyzed and redundancy analysis and generalized linear model were applied to establish the relationship between taxa and environmental variables. Results: Were identified 369 organisms belonging to four genera (Amanahyphes, Traverhyphes, Tricorythopsis, and Tricorythodes), two species, and eight morphospecies. Amanahyphes saguassu is reported for the first time for the Meta department. High diversity of Leptohyphidae nymphs was recorded in the transition to drought season and greater abundance in drought. Beta diversity indicated that the configuration of the assemblage changes spatially and temporally. Conclusions: Leptohyphidae organisms prefer fast habitats, particularly in the dry period where they find food (leaf litter, detritus) and shelter to establish themselves successfully; anthropic activities such as urbanization notably affect diversity. The high diversity recorded in this small river in the foothills of the plains reflects the need to increase this type of works and collection efforts of study material in the region.

RESUMO

A large number of tick species are proven vectors for the transmission of bacteria, protozoa, and viruses. Soft ticks (Acari: Argasidae) in South America have been found to be the most frequent carriers of borreliae of the relapsing fever group (RFG); however, there are several information gaps specially on the taxonomy and distribution of some tick species. Here, we used light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and PCR amplification of a fragment of the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene to evaluate 174 larvae of Ornithodoros (Argasidae) collected from three bat species (Eptesicus orinocensis, Molossus rufus and Noctilio albiventris) in the Orinoquia Region of Colombia. The morphological and molecular results confirmed that all the analyzed larvae corresponded to Ornithodoros hasei. Comparisons of mitochondrial 16S rDNA sequences showed low genetic divergence (0% - 0.3%) between larvae of the Department of Arauca in the Orinoquia Region and higher genetic divergence (3.4 - 4.7%) in sequences from other American countries. Our work represents the most recent collection of this species in Colombia and provides a molecular evaluation for the first time. Moreover, a new association of O. hasei with bats such as E. orinocensis is documented. Considering the wide distribution of O. hasei in the American Continent, and its putative role as vector for Borrelia, integrative studies that involve morphological, morphometric, molecular data and experimental crosses are needed to determine if the higher genetic distances are associated with cryptic speciation, as detected in other tick complexes, or represent genetic divergences among geographically different populations of O. hasei.

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to evaluate the seminal traits and sexual behaviors of mature Brahman bulls in a multi-sire system during mating or resting seasons and different climatic periods of the year at the Colombian flooded savannas. Thirty-two Brahman bulls, suitable for reproduction, were used, which were subjected to breeding soundness evaluation, as well as the libido and service capacity tests. Such evaluations were compared among different seasons of the year in relation to the rainfall. Libido and service capacity tests were carried out in paddock for 12 continuous hours. Scrotal circumference and all seminal traits were not influenced by the mating or rest seasons, neither by the different climatic periods. However, libido and service capacity were significantly affected by the climatic periods, decreasing their expression during the intense rainfall season, and increasing during the transition period from summer to the onset of rains, which could be considered the appropriate time to establish mating seasons in this region. Furthermore, a high positive correlation was observed between libido and service capacity confirmed by a logistic model that animals with low libido have low probability of having high service capacity. In conclusion, although Brahman bulls are physiologically adapted to tropical regions, their expression of sexual behavior is markedly influenced by the weather. Hence, the use of libido test may serve as a good predictor of the service capacity, and a useful tool to improve the selection of sires.

ABSTRACT We report the first confirmed records of the red heron (Agamí agamí) in the Vichada department. Ten individuals (seven adults and three juveniles) were observed in four locations associated with dense gallery forest surrounded by water bodies, which validate the occurrence of the species towards the easternmost part of the Colombian Orinoquia and within the department. These observations demonstrate the need to document birdlife in a local and regional scale, in order to complement the taxon knowledge in this region of the country, given it is migratory period and unknown seasonal movements; in addition, this will help to verify the importance of the sightings localities as possible areas of refuge, foraging, reproduction and nesting that are essential for the conservation of this species.

Abstract Road have impacted negatively the biodiversity and running-over the animals is one of the most relevant direct causes. This study aims to determine the time distribution and evaluate the spatial patterns related to running-over of wild vertebrates in the roads Yopal-Quebradaseca and Yopal-variante Jagüeyes, in Casanare (Colombia). between 2017 and 2018, running-over events were recorded in 18 trips at 40 km/h. Running-over rates and hotspots were determined as well as some landscape variables (wetlands, native vegetation, buildings) and road variables (shape and use of traffic signs) related to this issue. This way, 139 collision events were recorded including 8 mammal species, 13 reptiles, 20 birds and one amphibian. Caiman crocodilus (n = 17), Rhinella marina (n = 13) and Tamandua tetradactyla (n = 13) were the most run-over species. Myrmecophaga tridactyla was the only threatened species reported in this vertebrate group. Reptiles were the animals with higher running-over rates in both road directions. Based on the total data, 15 hotspots were identified. In general, running-over events were associated with going through curve sections, getting close to a wetland, and driving in areas without any infrastructure. In these events, 64% of the run-over animals were found at a distance lower than 2 km from traffic sign, which indicates a poor effectiveness of these signs. This is the first report of animal running-over in this flooded savanna and is expected to be used as a tool to mitigate the impact on this province.

RESUMO

The surge of oil palm production in the Neotropics has become a major concern about the potential impacts on biodiversity. In the Colombian Orinoquia, which has shown a massive landscape transformation due to the growth of oil palm plantations, the effects of oil palm agriculture on bats in this region have not been studied up to date. To understand the impact of habitat conversion on bat diversity, we characterised bat assemblages in secondary forest and palm plantations in the Colombian Llanos foothills (Meta, Colombia). We captured 393 individuals (forest = 81, plantation = 312) of 18 species and 3 families. The forest cover presented three exclusive species while the plantation had five. Species diversity (q 1) and evenness (J') were higher in the forest compared to the plantation. These differences derived from the increase in abundances of generalist species (Artibeus sp., Carollia spp.) in the plantation. Despite the habitat simplification caused by oil palm plantations, this monoculture provides a cover that is used by some bats, decreasing their risk of predation and allowing movement between patches of forest habitat as steppingstones. Maintaining forest cover in agricultural landscapes favours diversity by generating a "spillover effect" of the forest towards plantations, which in the case of some bats contributes to the reduction of species isolation and the maintenance of ecosystem services provided by them. It is important to improve management practices of oil palm plantations to minimise negative impacts on biodiversity, considering the expansion of this productive system and the scarcity of protected areas in this region.

RESUMO

The mayflies are insects widely known as indicators of aquatic quality in freshwater systems, they are abundant and diverse in tropical streams. In this study, it was determined the influence of physical, chemical and bacteriological characteristics on the Ephemeroptera assembly in a period of low precipitation in the Ocoa river of Meta department. There were 5,332 nymphs belonging to 4 families, 10 genera and 3 species. Three new genera records and one species are presented for Meta: Cloeodes, Zelusia, Lumahyphes and Americabaetis alphus. The genera Camelobaetidius and Varipes were found associated with conditions of contamination by organic matter and water mineralization. Likewise, Americabaetis, Thraulodes, Lumahyphesand Tricorythodes were associated with contamination conditions, especially with nitrites and nitrates. Nanomis, Cloeodes and Zelusia showed greater sensitivity to the contamination condition and were related to high percentages of dissolved oxygen in the water and they were in the sampling stations of the upper part in the river. It is important to mention that there were not Ephemeroptera in most of the stations associated with the urban area. That reflects their high sensitivity to polluting conditions at low precipitation period.(AU)

RESUMO

Although Colombia was one of the first tropical countries where an effort was made to gather mycological flora, contributions to the taxonomy, diversity, and ecology of soil microfungi are still scarce. In this study, the diversity of soil microfungi was studied collecting data from literature according to the Colombian natural regions: Andean, Amazonian, Caribbean, Orinoquía, Pacific, and Insular. The majority of the records comes from the Andean region, the most accessible to research. The other regions have been much less studied, with the Insular one with no data at all. International literature reported, up to now, ca. 300 different species of soil microfungi belonging to 126 different genera and 6 phyla (Ascomycota, Basidiomycota Mucoromycota, Glomeromycota, Mortierellomycota, and Olpidiomycota). Vescicular-Arbuscular fungi were widely investigated with Acaulospora and Glomus, the most recorded genera with ca. 20 species each. Ascomycota was the most diverse phylum with Penicillium, Aspergillus, and Fusarium representing the majority. Mortierella is strongly present in Mortierellomycota, and in the panorama of all recorded fungi, too. The other phyla and genera were less recorded. It is, therefore, evident the need to continue studying the soil microfungi in Colombia to have a better understanding of soil functioning and its ecosystem services.

RESUMO

Several species of trypanosomes can infect bats (Chiroptera), but current information about bat trypanosomes in Colombia is scarce. The objectives of this study were to estimate the infection rate and to characterize the trypanosome species infecting bats from three rural regions near the municipality of Cumaribo in Vichada, Colombia. Blood samples were collected from 39 bats. DNA was extracted from the blood samples and analyzed using nuclear genetic markers (SSU rDNA, ITS rDNA, and cathepsin genes) to discriminate among trypanosome species. Trypanosomes were detected in 66.7 % (26/39) of blood samples using PCR; 61.5 % (24/39) of infections were identified as Trypanosoma theileri and 5.1 % (2/39) as T. wauwau-like parasites. The phylogeographic analysis revealed that our T. theileri sequences were associated with the TthIIB genotype from cattle in Brazil and Venezuela. The T. wauwau-like parasites represent a new genotype of the species and were found in Molossus molossus and Platyrrhinus helleri bats. These data represent the first evidence of this trypanosome in both Colombia, and in these species of bats. Bat infections with T. theileri suggest an important role of these hosts in maintaining this genotype, probably acquired by ingesting insect vectors. The T. wauwau-like genotype in new mammalian host species supports the 'bat seeding' hypothesis of the T. cruzi clade. The epidemiological and evolutionary implications of these findings are discussed.

Abstract This work involved the socioeconomic typing and characterisation of transitory rice, corn and soybean crop producers in the Piedmont area of Colombia's Eastern plains and flat high plains areas through a structured survey carried out during the 2019A semester. This was complemented by general information provided by the trade/producers' associations (Fenalce (cereal growers' association) and Fedearroz (rice growers' federation)) and the Colombian Agricultural Research Corporation (Agrosavia) to improve and guide institutional and sector policies according to the producers' current conditions. Sample size was determined by stratified sampling with proportional allocation (5% margin of error and 95% confidence level); this gave 85 producers, 62 of whom were located in the Piedmont area and 23 on the high plains. The producers were classified into homogeneous groups using multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (CA) multivariate techniques, with eighteen production-system-related social and economic variables. The results led to typing and characterising five groups of producers: 1) those having high income and higher education levels (mainly corn farmers) (n=18), 2) corn and soybean farmers relying on greater use of family labour and being dependent on banks/financial institutions (n=16), 3) mostly older soy farmers having great experience (n=18), 4) mostly rice farmers having basic primary education and unpaved roads (n=27) and 5) corn and rice farmers linked to Colombia's system of identifying social programme beneficiaries (SISBEN) using their own investment resources (n=6).

Diversification in the supply of fish farming has led to the hybridization of high commercial value species, such as the large catfish of the Pimelodidae family, in search of the improvement of relevant characteristics. However, one of the main problems of this practice is that morphologically the hybrids are similar to the parental lines or with intermediate forms difficult to differentiate. The new morphometric tools as geometry have managed to quantitatively evaluate the morphological changes, contributing to clarify problems of morphological differentiation. In order to evaluate the morphometric relationships and establish whether, the analyzed characteristics are intermediate in the hybrid with respect to the parental lines, the morphometric characterization of 20 adult specimens of Pseudoplatystoma metaense, was performed 21 of Leiarius marmoratus and 12 of the hybrid Pseudoplatystoma metaense x Leiarius marmoratus, for a total of 53 individuals evaluated. Linear morphometry analyses were performed, using body and cranial measurements, sustained in the analysis of principal and discriminating components, as a way of evaluating the contour of the specimens. For the osteological analysis, the neurocranium was used, obtained by means of the maceration protocol; with photographs; these were analyzed using geometric morphometry with the programs of the IMP series. Thus, it was found that the similarities observed at first sight in the hybrid with respect to their parentals, are not representative and therefore, statistically, three defined morphological groups that separate the parental species and the hybrid, thus obtaining an easy-to-identify tool. In the osteological analysis, similarities were found between the neurocraniums of the hybrid and Pseudoplatystoma metaense, which raises a pattern of inheritance in which possible convergences and divergences can be evaluated, as a result of hybridization.

Abstract An analysis of the composition and diversity of anura fauna associated with the lower Bojabá River basin, in the municipalities of Saravena-Arauca and Cubara-Boyaca, is carried out. Aspects of species numbers, true diversity indices and effective Hill numbers are reviewed. The sampling was carried out in September 2013 and March 2014 with two different climatic temporalities in gallery forest coverages, savanna and wetlands. 231 amphibian individuals are registered, distributed in five families, 10 genera and 18 species, the observed diversity of order q = 0, q = 1 and q = 2 explained that wetlands are the most diverse coverage, however, q = 0 indicates that gallery forests could accommodate more diversity. The species found come from eastern savannas with physiological adaptations to the intervened ecosystems and with generalist behavior.

ABSTRACT Faunal composition of the coprophagous beetles was studied in four sampling sites in the northern area from the Serranía de La Lindosa in Guaviare, testing diversity values and structure of the assemblages that were compared with other research done in any other areas of Biogeographical Guyana. The results showed low diversity values, typical of areas with low availability of resources and extreme climatic conditions and showed the predominance of species with nesting digging habit over resident and rolling species. The fauna composition presents a large number of common species with any other areas of the region, as occur as other affinities found for other taxa that support the links of these Colombian mountains to the Guyanese and Brazilian shields.

RESUMO

The composition and structure of thrips populations were determined in agroecosystems of 10 crops in the Andean, Caribbean, and Orinoquia regions of Colombia. From 18,183 identified specimens, 81 species belonging to 20 genera and three families were found. The Andean region was the most diverse with 60 species (n = 11,360, Chao 1 = 70.5, H' = 1.986), followed by the Caribbean region with 42 (n = 5,960, Chao 1 = 57.6, H' = 2.256) and the Orinoquia with 24 (n = 863, Chao 1 = 31; H' = 2.301). The crop with the richest fauna was avocado (Persea americana) Mill. with 40 species (n = 4,047, Chao 1 = 55.17, H' = 1.302), followed by coffee (Coffea arabica) L. with 26 (n = 1,395, Chao 1 = 33; H' = 1.026), cassava (Manihot esculenta) Crantz. with 25 (n = 1,050, Chao 1 = 29.67, H' = 1.635), citrus (Citrus spp.) with 22 (n= 836, Chao 1 = 25.75, H' = 1.748), corn (Zea mays) L. with 22 (n = 1,647, Chao 1 = 24.5, H' = 1.365), mango (Mangifera indica) L. with 17 (n = 1,144, Chao 1 = 18.5, H' = 1.303), blackberry (Rubus glaucus) Bentham. with 11 (n = 545, Chao 1 = 16, H' = 0.886), banana (Musa spp.) with 9 species (n = 1,798, Chao 1 = 9, H' = 0.208), cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) L. with 8 (n = 5,621, Chao 1 = 11, H' = 0.913), and rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) Müll.Arg. with 4 species (n = 90, Chao 1 = 4, H' = 0.594). Differences were found in the distribution of the species in the altitudinal gradients and in the biogeographical regions. Frankliniella gardeniae Moulton, was the most abundant species, with the highest presence in crops, the greatest geographic and altitudinal distribution.

RESUMO

Cetopsis varii sp. nov. Cetopsidae (Cetopsinae) is described from the Río Meta basin in eastern Colombia, at middle portions of the Río Orinoco basin. The new species differs from congeners by a combination of features: the absence of a humeral spot, presence of eye, conical teeth on vomer and dentary and rounded posterior nares, along with details of body, dorsal and caudal-fin pigmentation. The osteology of the new species is investigated through high-resolution X-ray computed tomography and cleared and stained specimens. Data thus obtained are used to code the new species for character states utilized in a previous phylogenetic analysis of Cetopsidae. Analysis of the expanded matrix shows that C. varii is the sister group to C. orinoco.

RESUMO

The Cusiana River sub-basin has been identified as a priority conservation area in the Orinoco region in Colombia due to its high species diversity. This study presents an updated checklist and identification key for fishes of the Cusiana River sub-basin. The checklist was assembled through direct examination of specimens deposited in the main Colombian ichthyological collections. A total of 2020 lots from 167 different localities from the Cusiana River sub-basin were examined and ranged from 153 to 2970 m in elevation. The highest number of records were from the piedmont region (1091, 54.0 %), followed by the Llanos (878, 43.5 %) and Andean (51, 2.5 %). 241 species distributed in 9 orders, 40 families, and 158 genera were found. The fish species richness observed (241), represents 77.7 % of the 314 estimated species (95 % CI=276.1-394.8). The use of databases to develop lists of fish species is not entirely reliable; therefore taxonomic verification of specimens in collections is essential. The results will facilitate comparisons with other sub-basins of the Orinoquia, which are not categorized as areas of importance for conservation in Colombia.
