BACKGROUND: There is neither a gold standard definition nor a universal consensus to diagnose sarcopenia in patients with chronic hepatitis C. Thus, we aimed to compare the prevalence of sarcopenia and the agreement and discrepancies between European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP1), EWGSOP2, and Foundation for the National Institutes of Health Biomarkers Consortium Sarcopenia Project (FNIH) definitions in chronic hepatitis C. METHODS: Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry was used to assess muscle mass by quantifying appendicular lean mass (ALM) adjusted for squared height (ALM/ht2) or for body mass index (ALMBMI). Muscle function was evaluated by handgrip strength. Subjective Global Assessment was used to assess the nutrition status. RESULTS: This cross-sectional study included 103 outpatients (mean age, 50.6 ± 11.3 years; 33.0% with compensated cirrhosis). Sarcopenia prevalence was 8.7%, 9.7%, and 9.7%, according to EWGSOP1, EWGSOP2, and FNIH definitions, respectively. There was neither a sex- nor a liver disease severity-specific difference in the prevalence of sarcopenia between the criteria applied. Sixteen (15.5%) patients fulfilled at least one of these criteria, and 3 out of 16 (18.8%) simultaneously had sarcopenia by consensus of the three criteria. Sarcopenic obesity was identified in 9 out of 16 (56.3%) patients, and 6 out of 9 (66.7%) of these only met FNIH consensus. CONCLUSIONS: In patients without cirrhosis or with compensated cirrhosis, and with chronic hepatitis C, the agreement between EWGSOP1 and EWGSOP2 classifications was substantial for sarcopenia diagnosis. Concerning EWGSOP and FNIH criteria, a fair agreement and limited overlap were found in these patients.

OBJECTIVES: Patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation may present with metabolic alterations that can have an effect on their energy expenditure and nutritional status. This project aimed to compare the pre- and posttransplant energy expenditures of patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation as well as related factors. METHODS: This prospective study was conducted at a single center. Patients, undergoing autograft or allograft, were evaluated before transplantation and on the 10th and 17th d posttransplantation. Energy expenditure was measured by indirect calorimetry. Diet intake was assessed by a 24-h dietary recall. Infectious and noninfectious complications were analyzed between days 1 to 10 after transplantation and days 11 to 17 after transplantation. Paired model analyses were carried out to identify the pretransplantation and posttransplantation periods. RESULTS: Twenty patients were evaluated with a mean age of 45.6 ± 17.2 y; a majority were male sex (65%), and the most frequent diagnoses were chronic myeloid leukemia (25%) and multiple myeloma (25%). Energy expenditure increased by 15% posttransplantation, and the energy requirement per kilogram of weight was 23 kcal/kg at day 10 after transplantation. Throughout the posttransplantation period, 45% of the patients required nutritional therapy. Negative energy and negative protein balance were observed at all analyzed times. Phase angle (P = 0.018), fever (P = 0.014), mucositis grades I to II (P = 0.018), and the total number of infectious and noninfectious events (P = 0.043) were associated with an increase in energy expenditure at day 10 after transplantation. CONCLUSIONS: Energy expenditure increased after transplantation compared with pretransplantation in 50% of patients. Phase angle, fever, grades I to II mucositis, and infectious and noninfectious events were associated with increased energy expenditure at day 10 after transplantation.

The oil palm Elaeis guineensis represents one of the most important crops in Ecuador. Considering that bud rot disease is deadly in Ecuador, more attention has been given to identifying possible causes for palm debility from this disease. We studied the involvement of fungi and nutrients in triggering bud rot disease in E. guineensis. Special emphasis was given to the molecules synthesized by the plant to protect against this devastating disease. Techniques like Diagnosis and Recommendation Integrated System (DRIS) and metagenomic analysis were used to understand the possible implications of biotic and abiotic factors in the development of bud rot disease in oil palm in Ecuador. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis was used to identify the phenolic protection barrier of the palm facing the disease. Our results indicate that fungi from Ascomyceta phylum were found in the tested samples. The species directly involved are different in soil compared with plants. The results indicate a deficiency of chemical elements, such as Ca, Mn, Mg, and Fe, which are responsible for palm debility from bud rot disease. More than 30 compounds with protective roles were identified in the leaves of symptomatic plants from the first stage of the infection.

Periodontal diseases is a highly prevalent chronic condition regulated by the host immune response to pathogenic bacterial colonization on the teeth surfaces. Nutrition is a critical component in the modulation of the immune system, hence the importance of a balanced diet. With the understanding of how dietary intake composition affects various health outcomes, nutrient diversity has been reported as a modifiable risk factor for periodontal disease. Eating disorders and different dietary patterns can be associated with periodontal diseases. In this sense, balanced and healthy nutrition plays a major role in maintaining the symbiosis between oral microbiota and periodontal health. Therefore, this review seeks to report the associations found in the literature between high- or low-fat/sodium/sugar, eating disorders and periodontal diseases. It was found that some dietary patterns such as high carbohydrate/sugar, high fat, and low fiber intake may be associated with periodontal disease. In addition, the presence of eating disorders can negatively impact patients' oral health and it is related to the development of several complications, including periodontal diseases. In both situations, nutritional and vitamin deficiencies can aggravate the periodontal condition. However, the relationship between periodontal disease, dietary patterns, and eating disorders still needs more scientific support to be well established, mainly in the sense of pointing out a protective relationship between both.

Objective: To determine if the leptin, adiponectin, and leptin/adiponectin ratio (LAR) can predict weight gain at the end of GnRH analogs (GnRHa) treatment in girls with central precocious puberty (CPP). Material and methods: Study design: prospective cohort. Serum levels of leptin and adiponectin were determined at diagnosis of CPP. Anthropometry was performed at diagnosis of CPP and every six-months, until treatment with GnRHa was discontinued and they presented menarche. Patients were divided according to BMI<94 and BMI>95 percentile at diagnosis of CPP. The outcome was the increased in weight gain (e.g., from normal weight to overweight) at the end of follow-up. Statistical analysis: repeated measures ANOVA test and Student's t-test were used to compare groups. Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the association of leptin and adiponectin levels, as well as LAR values with increased weight gain. Results: Fifty-six CPP patients were studied, 18 had BMI >95 percentile and 38 BMI <94 percentile. Of the 18 patients who initially had BMI >95th, two patients went from obesity to overweight, while among the 38 patients who started with BMI <94th, 21 (55.2%) increased their weight gain at the end of follow-up. This last group had higher leptin levels (8.99 ± 0.6 vs 6.14 ± 0.8, p=0.005) and higher LAR values compared to those who remained in the same weight (1.3 ± 0.5 vs 0.96 ± 0.56, p=0.01). In the logistic regression analysis, it was found that higher leptin levels and higher LAR values were associated with increased weight gain (RR 1.31, 95%CI 1.03-1.66, RR 4.86, 95%CI 1.10-21.51, respectively), regardless of birth weight, pubertal stage, age, and bone/chronological age ratio. Conclusions: In patients with CPP, leptin levels and higher LAR values appear to be associated with significantly greater weight gain during GhRHa treatment, particularly in girls starting with BMI < 94 percentile.

BACKGROUND: Considering that the validation of the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) remains unclear in patients with colorectal cancer, the present study aimed to assess the agreement, accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and prognostic effect of the GLIM on survival when compared with the Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA). METHODS: Patients with colorectal cancer who were scheduled to undergo a routine abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan were recruited. Using the GLIM two-step approach, the patients were first screened for malnutrition by using the PG-SGA Short Form (score ≥3). The malnutrition diagnosis was based on the etiologic (disease burden [cancer] or reduced food intake) and phenotypic GLIM criteria, including weight loss, body mass index, and skeletal muscle index at the third lumbar vertebra when using the CT scans. The food intake was assessed by the PG-SGA. RESULTS: This study included 191 patients (age, 60.5 ± 11.3 years; 57% men), and 23% and 32% were malnourished according to the GLIM and the PG-SGA, respectively. The GLIM revealed fair sensitivity (64%), good agreement (kappa = 0.65), specificity (96%), and diagnostic accuracy for detecting malnutrition (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve = 0.80; 95% CI, 0.72-0.88) when compared with the PG-SGA. The malnutrition value according to the GLIM and the PG-SGA was associated with short-term survival. However, only the PG-SGA was associated with long-term survival. CONCLUSIONS: Although showing fair sensitivity, the GLIM had good agreement, specificity, and diagnostic accuracy for malnutrition detection and was an independent predictor of short-term survival in patients with colorectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Critically ill patients have intense muscle tissue mobilization, and attenuating protein catabolism may contribute to improved outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate short-term muscle loss in critically ill patients. METHODS: In this prospective observational study, we evaluated the thickness of the rectus femoris muscle by ultrasonography in young and older adults of both sexes admitted to a cardiological intensive care unit within 48 h of admission (baseline) and after 7 days. The results were compared and correlated with anthropometric, clinical, and biochemical parameters. The significance level for all statistical analyses was 0.05. RESULTS: The final sample comprised 88 patients with a mean age of 66.2 ± 11.8 years. There was an average 13.5% reduction in rectus femoris muscle thickness over the study period (P < 0.001), regardless of the thigh circumference maintenance (P = 0.229). This reduction occurred even with improved clinical parameters (C-reactive protein, Simplified Acute Physiology Score) and was greater in patients receiving mechanical ventilation and sedation and in those who died. Regarding nutrition status, malnourished and eutrophic individuals showed greater muscle loss than overweight individuals. There was also an inverse correlation of muscle loss (percentage) with body mass index, arm circumference, and calf circumference (P < 0.05), demonstrating that the lower these anthropometric measurements, the higher the muscle loss obtained by ultrasound. CONCLUSION: Ultrasonography assessment detected muscle mass loss in the short-term more sensitively than the anthropometric method. However, it demands caution and further studies demonstrating this analysis.

The present review comes from five previous studies of a multicenter cohort of nulliparous pregnant women from different regions of Brazil. The first study showed a wide difference in consumption of industrialized foods among women from the south and southeast regions compared with northeastern women who chose to eat a healthier diet with fresh natural food. The second investigation intended to understand maternal eating habits, where five dietary patterns were identified: two considered healthy and three with excess protein, ultra-processed foods, fats, and sweets. Considering some barriers to classifying nutrition status during prenatal care, when data on pre-pregnancy weight is unknown, the third study developed a tool to identify three levels of risk for each gestational age range, assessed by measuring arm circumference. Applying those new tools, the associations between maternal nutrition and pregnancy outcomes were investigated: prematurity, pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes mellitus, and small-for-gestational-age infants. From these analyses, a predictive model was developed indicating that obesity, non-white color, and dietary pattern with excess protein consumption were associated with a greater probability of adverse pregnancy outcomes. Moreover, the potential of the intergenerational influence of head circumference as a proxy for maternal nutrition was analyzed. Using a Path Analysis method, the model was evidenced by different socioeconomic variables. Finally, understanding the complexity of the nutritional assessment, the present conceptual framework was proposed for nutritional assessment, and tracking and monitoring of pregnant women.

ABSTRACT Introduction: The relationship between mitral annular calcification (MAC) and the controlling nutritional status (CONUT) score has not been previously studied. In this study, we investigated the relationship between MAC and CONUT score to evaluate the nutritional status of patients with MAC. Methods: A total of 275 patients, including 150 patients with MAC and 125 patients without MAC, who presented to a cardiology outpatient clinic were enrolled in the study. Results: There was no difference in the CONUT score between the two groups. Correlation analysis indicated that CONUT score was positively correlated with left atrial (LA) diameter (r=0.190, P=0.020) and interventricular septum thickness (r=0.179, P=0.028) in the MAC+ group. In multivariate regression analysis, only LA diameter (odds ratio 95% confidence interval = 1,054-1,189, P=0.0001) was independently associated with MAC. Conclusion: The present study investigated the relationship between CONUT score and MAC for the first time in the literature. We demonstrated that CONUT score was not significantly higher in patients with MAC without chronic diseases. However, CONUT score was correlated with LA diameter in patients with MAC. We therefore conclude that, for patients admitted with MAC and high LA diameter, CONUT is a valuable nutritional and inflammatory status index.

SUMMARY OBJECTIVES: While studies on the treatment for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic continue all over the world, factors that increase the risk of severe disease have also been the subject of research. Malnutrition has been considered an independent risk factor. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the clinical effect of dietary habits and evaluate the prognostic value of the Controlling Nutritional Status score in the COVID-19 patients we followed up. METHODS: A total of 2760 patients hospitalized for COVID-19 were examined. Patients were retrospectively screened from three different centers between September 1 and November 30, 2020. A total of 1488 (53.9%) patients who met the criteria were included in the study. Risk classifications were made according to the calculation methods of prognostic nutritional index and Controlling Nutritional Status scores and total scores. The primary outcome of the study was in-hospital mortality. RESULTS: The groups with severe Controlling Nutritional Status and prognostic nutritional index scores had a significantly higher mortality rate than those with mild scores. In the multivariable regression analysis performed to determine in-hospital mortality, the parameters, such as age (OR 1.04; 95%CI 1.02-1.06, p<0.001), admission oxygen saturation value (SaO2) (OR 0.85; 95%CI 0.83-0.87, p<0.001), and Controlling Nutritional Status score (OR 1.34; 95%CI 1.23-1.45, p<0.001), were independent predictors. The patient groups with a low Controlling Nutritional Status score had a higher rate of discharge with recovery (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Higher Controlling Nutritional Status scores may be effective in determining in-hospital mortality in patients with COVID-19. Nutrition scores can be used as a useful and effective parameter to determine prognosis in patients with COVID-19.

All the variables that arise in family dynamics can have significant effects on the lives of children concerning their nutritional status and motor development. The objective of this study was to relate the PAL of parents to the level of motor development and the BMI of their children. A total of 198 subjects participated, with the age of the students ranging between 8 and 10 years. To measure the BMI, the norms for the nutritional evaluation of children and teenagers from 5 to 19 years were used; to identify the motor behaviors, the TGMD-2 Test was used; and to identify the level of physical activity of parents, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was used. For the analysis, the independent samples t-test and the non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test (Wilcoxon) were used, and for the correlational analysis, Spearman's rho test was applied. This study found no significant correlation between the activity level of parents and nutritional status variables (p = 0.162), or between the PAL variables of parents and the motor development of their children (p = 0.738). A parent's level of physical activity does not have a direct relationship with the nutritional status or the motor development of their children.

BACKGROUND: Nutrition therapy is a key component in the management of hyperemesis gravidarum (HG). The aim of this study was to describe sociodemographic, anthropometric, and nutrition aspects of pregnant women hospitalized because of HG and raise a discussion about the nutrition care provided. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective descriptive study that includes 26 pregnant women with confirmed diagnosis of HG who were hospitalized because of this condition in a tertiary hospital. Data of interest were collected from official medical records and analyzed to obtain measures of central tendency and dispersion, as well as frequencies. RESULTS: The studied individuals had a mean age of 25.7 years and a low level of education, and 65% of them were single mothers. They registered a low weight gain (2.8 kg) during pregnancy and in the course of their hospitalization, during which they lost an average of 1.7 kg, showing a decline in nutrition status during this period. Although the average intake of oral diet (OD) was 55% during hospital stay and only 5% of the studied population met caloric needs through OD, the prescription of complementary medical nutrition therapy (oral supplements, enteral or parenteral nutrition) was scarcely observed in this sample. CONCLUSION: Despite the negative impact that HG can impose on the mother's nutrition status and the known benefits that complementary nutrition therapies can provide, few nutrition interventions have been carried out to improve this situation. That indicates an urgent need for implementation or reviewing of nutrition assistance protocols for HG patients.

BACKGROUND: Inflammation plays a crucial role in nutrition status and can be useful in early nutrition risk screening of patients during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Thus, this study aimed to assess the association between systemic inflammatory markers and nutrition risk tools in intensive care unit (ICU) patients with COVID-19. METHODS: Patients with confirmed COVID-19 and ICU admission were enrolled in a retrospective, observational, cross-sectional study. The medians of C-reactive protein (CRP; ≥13.8 mg/dl) and the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR; ≥12.6) upon admission were used to dichotomize patients. RESULTS: Of the 73 patients, 63% were men; the average age was 56 years, and the median length of hospital stay was 10 (25th: 4; 75th: 17) days. When nutrition risk screening tools were used, 85% were at risk according to Nutritional Risk Screening (≥3 points), whereas 42% had high risk according to the Modified Nutrition Risk in the Critically Ill (mNUTRIC; ≥5 points), and 57% were moderately or severely malnourished according to the Subjective Global Assessment (B or C). Mortality was higher in the group with NLR ≥12.6 than in the group with NLR <12.6, with no difference between CRP groups. A significant association was found only between NLR and mNUTRIC, even when adjusted by sex, age, and body mass index (odds ratio, 1.36; 95% CI, 1.06-1.76; P = 0.016), but not between CRP and nutrition risk. CONCLUSION: Although the inflammatory marker CRP is the most used in hospital clinical practice, we found that only NLR was associated with nutrition risk (NUTRIC score).

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition status, body composition indicators, and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) parameters have been associated with increased risk of death in several pathologies. The aim of this study was to describe the associations between phase angle (PhA) indicators obtained by BIA with length of hospital stay, days on mechanical ventilation, and 60-day mortality in critically ill patients infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). METHODS: This is a prospective cohort of mechanically ventilated patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We assessed nutrition risk and body composition with BIA within 48 h from intensive care unit admission. Logistic and linear regression models were used to analyze the association between variables and clinical outcomes. Survival analysis by PhA value was performed using Kaplan-Meier curves. RESULTS: Sixty-seven patients were included. PhA (odds ratio [OR], 0.36; P = .002), standardized PhA (SPA) (OR, 0.45; P = .001), and extracellular water/total body water ratio (OR, 3.25; P = .002) were significant predictors of 60-day mortality. PhA <3.85° in females and <5.25° in males showed good and fair discrimination, respectively, for mortality prediction. Using cutoff values, low PhA was associated with a significantly increased risk of 60-day mortality (hazard ratio, 3.08; 95% CI, 1.12-8.41; P = .02). No association was detected for SPA. CONCLUSION: Low PhA values could be a predictor of 60-day mortality in critically ill patients with COVID-19. This biological marker could be incorporated as part of nutrition and mortality risk assessment in this population.

BACKGROUND: Phase angle (PhA), measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) has been studied as an indicator of survival in people living with HIV (PLWH). However, it remains unclear whether PhA is associated with malnutrition or low CD4+ T-cell counts. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we assessed the discriminative capacity of PhA for malnutrition detection using Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria in PLWH, aiming to propose cutoff points for this population. METHODS: This retrospective observational study included 427 adult PLWH (13% female). Participants were classified according to malnutrition status by using GLIM criteria. Body composition was assessed by using BIA. CD4+ T-cell counts were determined by flow cytometry. RESULTS: According to GLIM criteria, 30% of the participants were malnourished. Multivariate regression analysis showed that PhA (adjusted odds ratio [OR], 0.10; 95% CI, 0.05-0.18; P < 0.001), fat-mass percentage (adjusted OR, 0.86; 95% CI, 0.82-0.90; P < 0.001), and male sex (adjusted OR, 0.26; 95% CI, 0.09-0.76; P = 0.013) were independently associated with malnutrition. A PhA cutoff of 5.45° in men and 4.95° in women may predict malnutrition with sensitivity and specificity >70%. CONCLUSION: PhA could be a valid, useful, and simple predictor of malnutrition in PLWH.

BACKGROUND: The study aims to evaluate the accuracy of isolated nutrition indicators in diagnosing malnutrition in patients with gastric and colorectal cancer and their association with mortality. METHODS: Prospective cohort study involving patients with cancer (n = 178) attending a reference center of oncology at any point in the disease trajectory or treatment. Nutrition status was evaluated in a unique moment by body mass index (BMI), Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA), handgrip strength (HGS), and calf circumference (CC). Kappa coefficient, accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) were calculated for each nutrition indicator (PG-SGA as the reference method). The Cox proportional hazards model was used to assess hazard ratio (HR) and CI of mortality. RESULTS: From the total patients, 11% were underweight, 48% were malnourished (PG-SGA B or C), 43% had low HGS, and 55% presented low CC. There were 46 deaths (25.8%). BMI, HGS, and CC showed poor and fair agreements (κ < 0.30 for all ) and poor accuracy (AUC < 0.70 for all) in identifying malnutrition by PG-SGA. After the adjustment for confounders (age, treatment performed, site, and stage of cancer), PG-SGA (HR, 2.9; 95% CI, 1.5-5.9) and low CC (HR, 2.4; 95% CI, 1.1-5.2) were independent predictors of mortality. CONCLUSION: The nutrition indicators are not accurate in diagnosing malnutrition, whereas PG-SGA and low CC could predict mortality in gastric and colorectal cancer patients. Thus, CC should be combined with PG-SGA in nutrition assessments.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influence of parental physical activity on offspring's nutritional status in the 1993 Pelotas (Brazil) birth cohort. DESIGN: Birth cohort study. SETTING: The main outcomes were overweight and obesity status of children. The main exposure was parental physical activity over time, measured during the 11, 15 and 18 years of age follow-ups. The exposure was operationalised as cumulative, and the most recent measure before the birth of child. We adjusted Poisson regression models with robust variance to evaluate crude and adjusted associations between parental physical activity and offspring's nutritional status. All analyses were stratified according to the sex of the parent. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 874 members from the 1993 Pelotas (Brazil) birth cohort followed-up at 22 years of age with their first-born child were analysed. RESULTS: Children were, on average, 3·1 years old. Crude analyses showed that the mother's cumulative physical activity measure had an indirect association with the prevalence of children's obesity. The most recent maternal physical activity measure before the birth of the child was associated with 41 % lower prevalence of obesity in children, even after adjustment for confounders. CONCLUSIONS: The most recent maternal physical activity measure was indirectly associated with the prevalence of obesity in children. No associations were found for fathers, reinforcing the hypothesis of a biological effect of maternal physical activity on offspring's nutritional status.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Across the globe, the prevalence of hospital malnutrition varies greatly depending on the population served and on local socioeconomic conditions. While malnutrition is widely recognized to worsen patient outcomes and add financial burdens to healthcare systems, recent data on hospital malnutrition in Latin America are limited. Our study objectives were: (1) to quantify the prevalence of malnutrition risk in Latin American hospital wards, and (2) to explore associations between nutritional risk status, in-hospital food intake, and health outcomes. METHODS: On nutritionDay (nDay), a specific day every year, hospital wards worldwide can participate in a one-day, cross-sectional audit. We analyzed nDay data collected in ten Latin American countries from 2009 to 2015, including demographic and nutrition-related findings for adult patients (≥18 years) from 582 hospital wards/units. Based on patient-reported responses to questions related to the Malnutrition Screening Tool, we determined the prevalence of malnutrition risk (MST score ≥2). We also summarized patient-reported food intake on nDay, and we analyzed staff-collected outcome data at 30 days post-nDay. RESULTS: The prevalence of malnutrition risk in the Latin American nDay study population (N = 14,515) was 39.6%. More than 50% of studied patients ate one-half or less of their hospital meal, ate less than normal in the week before nDay, or experienced weight loss in the prior three months. The hospital-mortality hazard ratio was 3.63 (95% CI [2.71, 4.88]; P < 0.001) for patients eating one-quarter of their meal (compared with those who ate the full meal), increasing to 6.6 (95% CI [5.02, 8.7]; P < 0.0001) for patients who ate none of the food offered. CONCLUSIONS: Based on compilation of nDay surveys throughout Latin America, 2 of every 5 hospitalized patients were at risk for malnutrition. The associated risk for hospital mortality was up to 6-fold higher among patients who ate little or none of their meal on nDay. This high prevalence showed scant improvement over rates two decades ago-a compelling rationale for new focus on nutrition education and training of professionals in acute care settings.
