The growing demand for alternative sources of non-animal proteins has stimulated research in this area. Mushrooms show potential in the innovation of plant-based food products. In this study, the aim was to develop prototype fish fillets analogues from Pleurotus ostreatus mushrooms applying enzymatic treatment (ß-glucanase and transglutaminase-TG). A Plackett-Burman 20 experimental design was used to optimize forty variables. Oat flour (OF) exerted a positive effect on the hardness and gumminess texture parameters but a negative effect on cohesiveness and resilience. Soy protein isolate (SPI) exhibited a positive effect on elasticity, gumminess and chewiness, while acacia gum had a negative effect on elasticity, cohesiveness and resilience. After sensory analysis the assay with 1% cassava starch, 5% OF, 5% SPI, 0.1% transglutaminase (240 min/5 °C), 1% coconut oil, 1% soybean oil, 0.2% sodium tripolyphosphate, 0.6% ß-glucanase (80 °C/10 min) and without ß-glucanase inactivation was found to exhibit greater similarity to fish fillet. The classes hydrocarbons, alcohols and aldehydes are the predominant ones in aromatic profile analysis by chromatography and electronic nose. It is concluded that a mushroom-based analogue of fish fillet can be prepared using enzymatic treatment with TG.

BACKGROUND: Nonsurgical rhinoplasty (NSR) utilizing hyaluronic acid (HA) filler injections is increasingly used to address nose shape issues. While refinements have been proposed, the technique lacks standardization. OBJECTIVES: Our study aimed to evaluate the aesthetic outcome, longevity of results, safety, and patient satisfaction with the novel Rino-4-Puntos (R4P) NSR technique. METHODS: This is a retrospective study of consecutive individuals treated with R4P between January 2021 and July 2023. All participants had one of the four indications: rectification of the dorsum (21%), triangulation of the tip (32%), projection (25%), and strengthening of the columella (22%). Each patient received two hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers: one with intermediate G prime (G') at Points 1-3 and another with high G' at Point 4, which is further divided into Points 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, and 4.4. The injection points were as follows: P1 (radix, 0.05-0.15 mL, supraperiosteal), P2 (supratip, 0.025 mL, suprachondrial), P3 (tip, 0.15 mL, deep fat), P4 (columella, 0.30 mL, supraperiosteal [4.1], or deep fat [4.2, 4.3, and 4.4]). RESULTS: Four hundred individuals (n = 284 [71%] females) are included. The mean filler volume used was 0.65 ± 0.17 mL. Injecting small boluses (≤ 0.05 mL) in the midline at deep planes minimized the risk of adverse effects, as no vascular complications occurred. Ninety-three percent of participants considered the overall outcome at least satisfactory ("good," "very good," or "excellent"). The treatment effect was maintained for a median of 11 months. CONCLUSIONS: The R4P technique refines NSR by combining enhanced aesthetic outcome, longevity, and safety. The nasal columella is considered by many to be the most difficult nasal aesthetic subunit to reconstruct, due to its delicate anatomy and central location. Full thickness columellar defects are particularly challenging. Being in the midline of the face, the nasal columella receives vascularization from terminal arterial branches, so adjacent local flaps have limited arcs of rotation or may be too bulky, thus withdrawing the options for reconstruction. Forehead flaps, due to their reliable vascularization and excellent aesthetic result, are the workhorse for reconstructing most nasal defects. However, a low hairline in the forehead may be an obstacle to their use in columellar reconstruction, considering the distal position of the defect. We present a technique designed for total columellar reconstruction using a two-staged forehead flap in a 9-year-old child. The method is particularly useful for patients with a low hairline, avoiding transfer of hair-bearing skin to the reconstructed columella. Laryngoscope, 2024.

Status epilepticus (SE) is a medical emergency associated with high mortality and morbidity. Na+, K+-ATPase, is a promising therapeutic target for SE, given its critical role in regulation of neuron excitability and cellular homeostasis. We investigated the effects of a Na+, K+-ATPase-activating antibody (DRRSAb) on short-term electrophysiological and behavioral consequences of pilocarpine-induced SE. Rats were submitted to pilocarpine-induced SE, followed by intranasal administration (2 µg/nostril). The antibody increased EEG activity following SE, namely, EEG power in theta, beta, and gamma frequency bands, assessed by quantitative analysis of EEG power spectra. One week later, DRRSAb-treated animals displayed less behavioral hyperreactivity in pick-up tests and better performance in novel object recognition tests, indicating that the intranasal administration of this Na+, K+-ATPase activator immediately after SE improves behavioral outcomes at a later time point. These results suggest that Na+, K+-ATPase activation warrants further investigation as an adjunctive therapeutic strategy for SE.

Introdução: A correção da relação radix dorso nasal é realizada há vários anos utilizando as mais variadas técnicas como enxerto de cartilagem auricular, septal ou costal, preenchimento com ácido hialurônico, uso de fáscia e enxertos e uso de cartilagem picada em cubo, silicone e ácido hialurônico. O uso de cartilagem fragmentada é descrito na literatura e tem ganhado adeptos nos últimos anos, pela facilidade em ser realizado. O objetivo neste estudo é descrever nossa experiência com a utilização do enxerto de cartilagem fragmentado no aumento do radix comparando a percepção visual e tátil do paciente e sua satisfação. Método: Estudo observacional em pacientes submetidos a rinoplastia no período de janeiro 2018 a junho de 2022, em cirurgias nas quais ocorreu o aumento de radix com o uso de enxerto de cartilagem picada. Resultados: Dos 47 pacientes, a maioria era do sexo feminino (35, 74,4%), com média de idade de 34,6 anos (18-44). Quanto ao tipo de pele, Fitzpatrick tipo 3 (n=28, 59,5%) foi o principal, sendo encontrado frequentemente pacientes com pele de média espessura (n=23, 48,9%). Complicações presentes foram infecção (1 caso), migração de cartilagem picada (3 casos), e reabsorção parcial (1 caso). Na avaliação da percepção tátil 42 pacientes (89,3%) percebiam, à palpação, as proeminências cartilaginosas e na visual apenas 2 (4%). A satisfação foi elevada em 45 (96%) pacientes. Conclusão: A cartilagem picada livre pode ser utilizada na região do radix com resultados satisfatórios.


Introduction: Correction of the nasal radix dorsum relationship has been carried out for several years using the most varied techniques such as auricular, septal, or costal cartilage grafts, filling with hyaluronic acid, use of fascia and grafts and the use of diced cartilage, silicone, and hyaluronic acid. The use of fragmented cartilage is described in the literature and has gained popularity in recent years, due to its ease of use. The objective of this study is to describe our experience with the use of fragmented cartilage graft in radix augmentation, comparing the patient's visual and tactile perception and satisfaction. Method: Observational study in patients undergoing rhinoplasty from January 2018 to June 2022, in surgeries in which the radix was increased with the use of minced cartilage graft. Results: Of the 47 patients, the majority were female (35, 74.4%), with a mean age of 34.6 years (18-44). As for skin type, Fitzpatrick type 3 (n=28, 59.5%) was the main one, with patients with medium-thickness skin being frequently found (n=23, 48.9%). Complications present were infection (1 case), migration of chopped cartilage (3 cases), and partial resorption (1 case). In the assessment of tactile perception, 42 patients (89.3%) perceived cartilaginous prominences on palpation and only 2 (4%) visually. Satisfaction was high in 45 (96%) patients. Conclusion: Free minced cartilage can be used in the radix region with satisfactory results.

RESUMO

The authors propose a novel flap for rhinoplasty: the supratip cross flap (SCF). It is a simple and effective method for avoiding and correcting alar contour deformities and external nasal valve (ENV) issues in rhinoplasty without grafts. In addition to its benefit for supratip break, the flap also allows a smooth and natural transition between the nasal dorsum and the nasal tip complex.

A reversible optoelectronic nose is presented consisting of ten acid-base indicators incorporated into a starch-based film, covering a wide pH range. The starch substrate is odorless, biocompatible, flexible, and exhibits high tensile resistance. This optical artificial olfaction system was used to detect the early stages of food decomposition by exposing it to the volatile compounds produced during the spoialge process of three food products (beef, chicken, and pork). A smartphone was used to capture the color changes caused by intermolecular interactions between each dye and the emitted volatiles over time. Digital images were processed to generate a differential color map, which uses the observed color shifts to create a unique signature for each food product. To effectively discriminate among different samples and exposure times, we employed chemometric tools, including hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA). This approach detects food deterioration in a practical, cost-effective, and user-friendly manner, making it suitable for smart packaging. Additionally, the use of starch-based films in the food industry is preferable due to their biocompatibility and biodegradability characteristics.

The nasal administration of therapeutic fluids and vaccines is used to treat allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, congestion, coronaviruses and even Alzheimer's disease. In the latter, the drug must reach the olfactory region, so it finds its way into the central nervous system. Effective administration techniques able to reach the olfactory region are challenging due to the tortuous anatomy of the nasal cavity, and are frequently evaluated in vitro using transparent anatomical models. Here, the liquid distribution inside a 3D printed human nasal cavity is quantified for model fluids resulting from the discharge of a 1-mL syringe with either a spray-generating nozzle, and a straight tip emitting a collimated fluid stream. Experiments using two model fluids with different viscosities suggest that a simple, correctly positioned straight tip attached to a syringe is able to efficiently deliver most of a therapeutic fluid in the human olfactory region in the side-laying position, avoiding the adoption of head-back and head-down positions that can be difficult for patients in the age range typical of Alzheimer's disease. Furthermore, we demonstrate by computer simulations that the conclusion is valid within a wide range of parameters.

As technology advances, electronic tongues and noses are becoming increasingly important in various industries. These devices can accurately detect and identify different substances and gases based on their chemical composition. This can be incredibly useful in fields such as environmental monitoring and industrial food applications, where the quality and safety of products or ecosystems should be ensured through a precise analysis. Traditionally, this task is performed by an expert panel or by using laboratory tests but sometimes becomes a bottleneck because of time and other human factors that can be solved with technologies such as the provided by electronic tongue and nose devices. Additionally, these devices can be used in medical diagnosis, quality monitoring, and even in the automotive industry to detect gas leaks. The possibilities are endless, and as these technologies continue to improve, they will undoubtedly play an increasingly important role in improving our lives and ensuring our safety. Because of the multiple applications and developments in this field in the last years, this work will present an overview of the electronic tongues and noses from the point of view of the approaches developed and the methodologies used in the data analysis and steps to this aim. In the same manner, this work shows some of the applications that can be found in the use of these devices and ends with some conclusions about the current state of these technologies.

The development of non-invasive methods and accessible tools for application to plant phenotyping is considered a breakthrough. This work presents the preliminary results using an electronic nose (E-Nose) and machine learning (ML) as affordable tools. An E-Nose is an electronic system used for smell global analysis, which emulates the human nose structure. The soybean (Glycine Max) was used to conduct this experiment under water stress. Commercial E-Nose was used, and a chamber was designed and built to conduct the measurement of the gas sample from the soybean. This experiment was conducted for 22 days, observing the stages of plant growth during this period. This chamber is embedded with relative humidity [RH (%)], temperature (°C), and CO2 concentration (ppm) sensors, as well as the natural light intensity, which was monitored. These systems allowed intermittent monitoring of each parameter to create a database. The soil used was the red-yellow dystrophic type and was covered to avoid evapotranspiration effects. The measurement with the electronic nose was done daily, during the morning and afternoon, and in two phenological situations of the plant (with the healthful soy irrigated with deionized water and underwater stress) until the growth V5 stage to obtain the plant gases emissions. Data mining techniques were used, through the software "Weka™" and the decision tree strategy. From the evaluation of the sensors database, a dynamic variation of plant respiration pattern was observed, with the two distinct behaviors observed in the morning (~9:30 am) and afternoon (3:30 pm). With the initial results obtained with the E-Nose signals and ML, it was possible to distinguish the two situations, i.e., the irrigated plant standard and underwater stress, the influence of the two periods of daylight, and influence of temporal variability of the weather. As a result of this investigation, a classifier was developed that, through a non-invasive analysis of gas samples, can accurately determine the absence of water in soybean plants with a rate of 94.4% accuracy. Future investigations should be carried out under controlled conditions that enable early detection of the stress level.

BACKGROUND: This study introduces and assesses the outcomes of a novel rhinoplasty technique, TRICK-TIP (Transcolumellar and Inter Cartilaginous Keystoning with Tip preservation), employing a combined open and closed approach with tip anatomy conservation and structured tip support. METHODS: The procedure involves a low stairstep columellar sectioning, followed by transmembranous and intercartilaginous incisions without skin dissection in the columella or tip. Elevating the entire mobile nose as a three-layered flap provides extensive access to the entire nasal pyramid and septum. Tip modifications, including retrograde cephalic cartilage resection and supratip skin thinning, are performed based on individual cases. A key columellar strut is frequently used, initially sutured in the interdomal space and then turned down for height adjustment and final fixation. Interdomal sutures, supratip sutures, and alar resection are implemented as needed. RESULTS: One hundred twenty patients participated, with high satisfaction and a low frequency of adverse effects reported using four FACE-Q™ questionnaires. One hundred and two independent raters evaluated pre and postoperative photographs, scoring "overall nose result" as 3.6 out of 5, with minimal or absent nostril deformities (1.84), soft triangle deformities (1.73), and columellar external scar deformity/visibility (1.35) where 1 is the absence of the deformity and 5 is disfigurement. Complications were absent, and revisions were infrequent. CONCLUSIONS: The combined benefits of the wide-open approach, shortened surgery duration, and nasal tip preservation contribute to outcome optimization. TRICK-TIP rhinoplasty is characterized by simplicity, enabling targeted modifications, preventing soft triangle and rim complications, and facilitating essential tip support while maintaining favorable results. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate quality-of-life and satisfaction outcomes in patients undergoing the MES using the Portuguese version of the Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation (NOSE-p) and Rhinoplasty Outcome Evaluation (ROE), and also to evaluate the frequency of possible complications of this technique. METHODS: We conducted a single-center prospective study with patients who had the indication for MES, from May 2016 to September 2020 at the Facial Plastic Surgery Clinic of Otolaryngology Department of the Hospital de Clinicas de Porto Alegre. The primary outcome was the relative postoperative change in NOSE-p. Secondary outcome was the variation in ROE, a validated quality-of-life questionnaire for rhinoplasty patients. RESULTS: Of the 31 patients submitted to extracorporeal septorhinoplasty who were evaluated, twenty-seven patients were included. Preoperative and postoperative NOSE-p scale scores were 65.2 ±â€¯29.9 and 23.5 ±â€¯26.7, respectively (mean differences of 42.04; [95% CI 27.35-56.73]; p <  0.0001). Pre and postoperative ROE scores were 38.3 ± 24.3 vs. 67.29 ± 29.7, respectively (mean differences of -29.02; [95% CI -40.5 to -17.5]; p =  0.0001). Residual septal deviation was verified in 2 patients (7.4%). CONCLUSION: Most of the patients submitted to modified extracorporeal septoplasty had a significant improvement in quality of life scores of nasal obstruction, with good aesthetical outcomes and low indices of postoperative complications. Introdução: O nariz apresenta grande importância estética e funcional, com alta incidência de lesões malignas. Existem várias técnicas de reconstrução do terço distal do nariz, não havendo uma indicação universal; irá depender das características da lesão. As opções cirúrgicas variam entre enxerto de pele, retalhos locais, regionais e microcirúrgicos. O objetivo é apresentar uma série de casos de reconstrução de terço distal do nariz com diferentes técnicas cirúrgicas, discutindo as peculiaridades e os resultados obtidos. Método: Trata-se de estudo retrospectivo realizado no Hospital do Servidor Público Estadual de São Paulo (HSPE), avaliando uma série de oito pacientes com diagnóstico de câncer de pele não melanoma localizados em terço distal de nariz e que foram submetidos a reconstrução pela equipe de Cirurgia Plástica. Resultados: Foram obtidos resultados satisfatórios para todos os pacientes submetidos a reconstrução distal do nariz, tendo sido utilizadas técnicas de enxerto de pele total (n=1) e retalhos locais (n=7), tais como o retalho bilobado, nasogeniano, dorsal do nariz, frontal paramediano, e transposição nasolabial. Conclusão: A reconstrução de defeitos do terço distal do nariz é desafiadora e com grande variabilidade técnica. Deve-se realizar avaliação criteriosa do paciente e da lesão, avaliar riscos e benefícios e compartilhar a decisão com o paciente.


Introduction: The nose has great aesthetic and functional importance, with a high incidence of malignant lesions. There are several techniques for reconstructing the distal third of the nose, but there is no universal indication; will depend on the characteristics of the injury. Surgical options vary between skin grafts and local, regional, and microsurgical flaps. The objective is to present a series of cases of reconstruction of the distal third of the nose using different surgical techniques, discussing the peculiarities and the results obtained. Method: This is a retrospective study carried out at the Hospital do Servidor Público Estadual de São Paulo (HSPE), evaluating a series of eight patients diagnosed with non-melanoma skin cancer located in the distal third of the nose and who underwent reconstruction by the team of Plastic Surgery. Results: Satisfactory results were obtained for all patients undergoing distal nose reconstruction, using total skin graft techniques (n=1) and local flaps (n=7), such as the bilobed, nasolabial, and dorsal nose flap. nose, paramedian frontal, and nasolabial transposition. Conclusion: Reconstruction of defects in the distal third of the nose is challenging and involves great technical variability. A careful assessment of the patient and the injury must be carried out, risks and benefits assessed and the decision shared with the patient.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in exhaled human breath serve as pivotal biomarkers for disease identification and medical diagnostics. In the context of diabetes mellitus, the noninvasive detection of acetone, a primary biomarker using electronic noses (e-noses), has gained significant attention. However, employing e-noses requires pre-trained algorithms for precise diabetes detection, often requiring a computer with a programming environment to classify newly acquired data. This study focuses on the development of an embedded system integrating Tiny Machine Learning (TinyML) and an e-nose equipped with Metal Oxide Semiconductor (MOS) sensors for real-time diabetes detection. The study encompassed 44 individuals, comprising 22 healthy individuals and 22 diagnosed with various types of diabetes mellitus. Test results highlight the XGBoost Machine Learning algorithm's achievement of 95% detection accuracy. Additionally, the integration of deep learning algorithms, particularly deep neural networks (DNNs) and one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN), yielded a detection efficacy of 94.44%. These outcomes underscore the potency of combining e-noses with TinyML in embedded systems, offering a noninvasive approach for diabetes mellitus detection.

BACKGROUND: Among the nasal muscles, the levator labii superior alaeque nasi (LLSAN) acts as a transitional muscle that conjugates with other nasal and perinasal muscles. Thus, when treating the nasal region with Botulinum toxin (BTX), it is important to understand local nasal muscular dynamics and how they can influence the muscular dynamics of the entire face. METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis of cases treated by an injection pattern encompassing the face, including nasal muscles. Photographs were taken at rest and during motion (frontal and oblique views), before and after treatment. RESULTS: A total of 227 patients have been treated in the last 18 months with the following results: eyebrow tail lifting, softness of crow's feet, improvement of the drooping of the tip of the nose, and shortening of the lip philtrum when smiling. We present cases illustrating the use of this approach. CONCLUSIONS: Treating the facial muscles globally (including the frontal, corrugators, procerus, orbicularis oculi, platysma, DAO, and nasal muscles) can improve the smile and facial expressions. This is believed to occur because the elevated portion of the upper lip muscle becomes stronger as the nasal part of the LLSAN is paralyzed. PURPOSE: To evaluate the role of anatomic alterations of the upper airway and facial skeleton in the evolution of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in a prospective population-based study with an 8-year follow-up. METHODS: This was a population-based, longitudinal, prospective study, which took place from 2007 to 2015 at the Instituto do Sono, Sao Paulo, Brazil. In 2007, type I polysomnography (PSG), otorhinolaryngological examination, and collection of anthropometric measurements of all volunteers were performed. Volunteers were classified according to their anatomical features of the upper airway and facial skeleton. After 8 years, volunteers were invited for reevaluation. The relationship between anatomical characteristics and polysomnographic evolution was evaluated. RESULTS: The study included 554 patients. After 8 years of follow-up, there was an increase in neck circumference and body mass index of the participants. There was a worsening in all polysomnographic parameters analyzed, with an increase in the apnea-hypopnea index, a decrease in minimum saturation values, and an increase in the percentage of sleep time with peripheral oxyhemoglobin saturation <90%. There was no statistical relationship between the anatomical findings considered unfavorable and the worsening of polysomnographic parameters. CONCLUSIONS: In a sample of the general population, after 8 years, we did not find any relationship between upper airway and facial skeleton characteristics and the progression of OSA.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the sinonasal-related Quality of Life (QoL) in patients undergoing endoscopic skull base surgery. METHODS: A retrospective study was performed, including patients with benign and malignant tumors at a single institution. Each patient completed the 22-Item Sino-Nasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22) and the Empty Nose Syndrome 6 Item Questionnaires (ENS6Q) to assess their perceived QoL at least 2-months after treatment. RESULTS: Forty-nine patients were enrolled in this study. The average score was 25.1 (Stander Deviation [SD] 14.99) for SNOT-22 and 6.51 (SD=5.58) for ENS6Q. Analysis of the overall results for the SNOT-22 showed that olfactory damage was the most serious syndrome. The most frequently reported high-severity sub-domains in SNOT-22 were nasal symptoms and sleep symptoms. Nasal crusting was the most severe item in ENS6Q according to the report. Nine patients (18.4%) had a score higher than 10.5 which indicates the high risk of Empty Nose Syndrome (ENS). SNOT-22 score was related to the history of radiotherapy (p< 0.05), while the ENS6Q score was not. CONCLUSIONS: The possibility of patients suffering from ENS after nasal endoscopic skull base surgery is at a low level, although the nasal cavity structure is damaged to varying degrees. Meanwhile, patients undergoing endoscopic skull base surgery were likely to suffer nasal problems and sleep disorders. Patients who had received radiotherapy have a worse QoL than those without a history of radiotherapy. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 3.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to evaluate the perception of facial attractiveness when nose and teeth, together or isolated, present different degrees of disharmony. The secondary objective was to compare the perception of laypersons with that of dentists. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional observational study included 112 individuals (58 laypersons and 54 dentists) that evaluated 6 manipulated images of the face of the same model, scoring their attractiveness using 10 cm Visual Analogue Scales (VAS), with least and most attractive at the left and right anchors, respectively. The images contained manipulations performed only on the nose (laterorhinia) and mouth (misaligned teeth), as follows: (1) standard photograph, with symmetrical nose + aligned teeth; (2) 2 mm nasal deviation + aligned teeth; (3) 4 mm nasal deviation + aligned teeth; (4) symmetrical nose + misaligned teeth; (5) 2 mm nasal deviation + misaligned teeth and (6) 4 mm nasal deviation + misaligned teeth. We used the repeated measures ANOVA test and Tukey's post-test for intra-group comparison of the images. The independent t-test was used for inter-group comparison of each image. RESULTS: In the laypersons' group, the highest grades were given to images with aligned teeth and the lowest to misaligned teeth (smallest mean difference = 2.88 cm). For this group, there was no statistically significant difference (P-values ranged from .988 to 1.000) between scores of the three images in which teeth were aligned (range of 7.70-7.78 cm). In the group of dentists, highest grades were given to images with aligned teeth and the lowest to misaligned teeth. Difference between images 3 and 4 was not statistically significant (P = .204). All other differences between any image of straight teeth and any image with misaligned teeth were significant and the smallest mean difference between the two groups of images was 1.87 (P = .039). However, in the images with aligned teeth, there was also a statistically significant difference with higher scores to the images with symmetrical nose in contrast with those with significant laterorhinia (mean difference = 1.03 cm). CONCLUSION: Teeth disharmonies had a more negative impact on the aesthetic perception of the face than did nose deviations, for both dentists and laypersons.

RESUMO Objetivo Apresentar um método de análise do modo respiratório por meio da termografia infravermelha. Método Estudo transversal exploratório de 38 imagens térmicas que representavam o momento da inspiração e da expiração durante a respiração nasal e durante a simulação da respiração oral de quatro voluntárias respiradoras nasais sem queixas respiratórias. Para a extração da temperatura das regiões de interesse (nariz e boca) foram utilizadas três formas de seleção distintas de dados (linha, retângulo e elipse) e três medidas de temperatura (mínima, média e máxima) por meio do software FLIR Tools®. Resultados Dentre as três formas de seleção houve maior variabilidade nas medidas obtidas pela linha, revelando limitações nessa medida. Não houve diferenças entre as medidas do retângulo e elipse, mostrando que ambas as formas de seleção apresentam resultados semelhantes para a extração das temperaturas. Na comparação entre as temperaturas do nariz e da boca na inspiração e expiração, os resultados indicaram que houve diferença com relevância estatística em todas as medidas realizadas, exceto para as medidas de temperatura média da inspiração, usando o retângulo e a elipse. Percebe-se diferenciação do modo respiratório tanto na inspiração quanto na expiração quando utilizada a temperatura média da boca com o retângulo e a elipse. Conclusão Sugere-se para avaliação do modo respiratório a avaliação da boca, por meio da elipse, com análise da temperatura média durante a inspiração.


ABSTRACT Purpose To present a method for analyzing breathing modes with infrared thermography. Methods This exploratory cross-sectional study used 38 thermal images of inspiration and expiration with nasal breathing and simulated mouth breathing in four nasal breathers without respiratory complaints. Three different data selection forms (line, rectangle, and ellipse) were used to extract the minimum, mean, and maximum temperatures of the regions of interest (nose and mouth) using the FLIR Tools® software. Results Among the three selection forms, there was greater temperature variability obtained with the line, revealing limitations in this measurement. There were no differences between the rectangle and ellipse values, showing that both selection forms present similar temperature extraction results. The comparison results between nose and mouth temperatures during inspiration and expiration indicated a statistically significant difference between all measurements, except for mean inspiration temperatures with the rectangle and ellipse. The breathing mode can be distinguished in both inspiration and expiration when using mean mouth temperatures with the rectangle and ellipse. Conclusion Breathing modes should be assessed based on mean mouth temperatures during inspiration, using the ellipse.
