RESUMO

We record and analyze the movement patterns of the marsupial Didelphis aurita at different temporal scales. Animals trajectories are collected at a daily scale by using spool-and-line techniques and, with the help of radio-tracking devices, animals traveled distances are estimated at intervals of weeks. Small-scale movements are well described by truncated Lévy flight, while large-scale movements produce a distribution of distances which is compatible with a Brownian motion. A model of the movement behavior of these animals, based on a truncated Lévy flight calibrated on the small scale data, converges towards a Brownian behavior after a short time interval of the order of 1 week. These results show that whether Lévy flight or Brownian motion behaviors apply, will depend on the scale of aggregation of the animals paths. In this specific case, as the effect of the rude truncation present in the daily data generates a fast convergence towards Brownian behaviors, Lévy flights become of scarce interest for describing the local dispersion properties of these animals, which result well approximated by a normal diffusion process and not a fast, anomalous one. Interestingly, we are able to describe two movement phases as the consequence of a statistical effect generated by aggregation, without the necessity of introducing ecological constraints or mechanisms operating at different spatio-temporal scales. This result is of general interest, as it can be a key element for describing movement phenomenology at distinct spatio-temporal scales across different taxa and in a variety of systems.

Abstract This study examines the relationship between output assessment and process assessment for basic movement patterns in jumping and throwing. Forty subjects, all male, 10.03 ± 0.3 years old, 37.82 ± 13.9 kg, 139 ± 28 cm and 19.38 ± 4.5 IMC (kg/m2) participated. The Basic Movement Patterns Instrument (IPBM) was used for assessing the process. For the output, length jump and over-the-shoulder throw tests were made for jumping and throwing, respectively. A descriptive statistics was carried out (averages and standard deviations) for the anthropometric measurements, and for examining the relationship of the outcomes of the two output and process attempts, Spearman correlation at a significance level of p ≤ 0.5 and p ≤ .01 was used. The resulting correlations showed the existence of a positive and significant relationship between process assessment and output assessment of jumping of (r = 0.447; p = .004; r2 = 0.200) in attempt 1 and of (r = 0.562; p < .0001; r2 = 0.316) in attempt 2. Similar results were found between process assessment and output assessment of throwing, (r = 0.332; p = .043; r2 = 0.011) in attempt 1 and (r = 0.311; p = .051, r2 = 0.097) in attempt 2. The correlation indicates that the subjects with the best results in process-oriented assessments have better results in output-oriented assessments; this suggests that the output can be improved by improving the technique. In understanding how process-oriented assessment and output-oriented assessment are mutually related, and in identifying what you want to measure and for what purpose, objectivity can be expected in the methods for assessing the performance of human movement with a process and output approach.

Resumo Este estudo analisou a relação entre a avaliação do produto e a avaliação do processo dos padrões fundamentais de movimento de salto e arremesso. 40 indivíduos, todos do sexo masculino, 10,03 ± 0,3 anos, 37,82 ± 13,9 kg, 139 ± 28 cm e 19,38 ± 4,5 IMC (kg/m2).

Jiménez-Díaz, J., Chaves-Castro, K. y Carpio-Rivera, E. (2023). Relationship between process- and product-oriented assessments of actual motor performance: a meta-analysis. PENSAR EN MOVIMIENTO: Revista de Ciencias del Ejercicio y la Salud, 21(1), 1-17. Motor performance is often assessed in two different ways. The first of them focuses on how the skill is carried out, whereas the second records the product obtained after execution. While both are widely used, the relationship between them is not clear. The objective of the present study is to determine the relationship between the results of process- or product-oriented tests that are used to measure actual motor performance, and to examine possible moderating variables through the meta-analytic technique. In order to sum up the products, the random effect model (REML) was used and the effect size (TE) of the correlation was calculated. A total seven studies met the criteria for eligibility, and a total 37 TE were obtained. It was found that a significant and positive relationship exists between process- and product-evaluated performance (TE = 0.466; IC95% = 0.391, 0.541; p < .001; n = 37; Q = 78.68; p < .001; I2 = 60.17%). Age and skill type were analyzed as possible moderating variables. The results suggest that a relationship exists between process- and product-oriented assessments of actual motor performance, while age and the type of skill have no influence on that relationship.

RESUMO

Immature individuals move from their natal area to the area where they settle and reproduce, and this may take several years. This process is essential for long-lived species such as vultures and condors, which spend long periods as immature and move extensively. We studied the movement behavior of 26 GPS-tagged immature Andean condors (Vultur gryphus) from northwestern Patagonia throughout the immature stage, analyzing whether these patterns differed according to age, sex and season. We found that season and age influenced home range size and flight distances, the warm season being when immature condors move most; movement patterns were greater in sub-adults than in juveniles. The age effect was associated with the sex of individuals, with males increasing their home range more than females. Our results provide the first description of how immature Andean condor movement patterns are affected by internal and external factors. This information could be key to understanding condor responses to environmental change and threats at different stages during their immature phase. Until now, condor conservation efforts have not considered the areas used by dispersing individuals. Our results increase our understanding of ranging behavior during the immature stage of this threatened bird, enabling us to improve the conservation policies and management strategies designed to protect them.

RESUMO

The simultaneous classification of the three most basic eye-movement patterns is known as the ternary eye-movement classification problem (3EMCP). Dynamic, interactive real-time applications that must instantly adjust or respond to certain eye behaviors would highly benefit from accurate, robust, fast, and low-latency classification methods. Recent developments based on 1D-CNN-BiLSTM and TCN architectures have demonstrated to be more accurate and robust than previous solutions, but solely considering offline applications. In this paper, we propose a TCN classifier for the 3EMCP, adapted to online applications, that does not require look-ahead buffers. We introduce a new lightweight preprocessing technique that allows the TCN to make real-time predictions at about 500 Hz with low latency using commodity hardware. We evaluate the TCN performance against other two deep neural models: a CNN-LSTM and a CNN-BiLSTM, also adapted to online classification. Furthermore, we compare the performance of the deep neural models against a lightweight real-time Bayesian classifier (I-BDT). Our results, considering two publicly available datasets, show that the proposed TCN model consistently outperforms other methods for all classes. The results also show that, though it is possible to achieve reasonable accuracy levels with zero-length look ahead, the performance of all methods improve with the use of look-ahead information. RESUMO

RESEARCH QUESTION: Is it possible to explore an association between individual sperm kinematics evaluated in real time and spermatozoa selected by an embryologist for intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), with subsequent normal fertilization and blastocyst formation using a novel artificial vision-based software (SiD V1.0; IVF 2.0, UK)? DESIGN: ICSI procedures were randomly video recorded and subjected to analysis using SiD V1.0, proprietary software developed by our group. In total, 383 individual spermatozoa were retrospectively analysed from a dataset of 78 ICSI-assisted reproductive technology cycles. SiD software computes the progressive motility parameters, straight-line velocity (VSL) and linearity of the curvilinear path (LIN), of each sperm trajectory, along with a quantitative value, head movement pattern (HMP), which is an indicator of the characteristics of the sperm head movement patterns. The mean VSL, LIN and HMP measurements for each set of spermatozoa were compared based on different outcome measures. RESULTS: Statistically significant differences were found in VSL, LIN and HMP among those spermatozoa selected for injection (P < 0.001). Additionally, LIN and HMP were found to be significantly different between successful and unsuccessful fertilization (P = 0.038 and P = 0.029, respectively). Additionally, significantly higher SiD scores were found for those spermatozoa that achieved both successful fertilization (P = 0.004) and blastocyst formation (P = 0.013). CONCLUSION: The possibility of carrying out real-time analyses of individual spermatozoa using an automatic tool such as SiD creates the opportunity to assist the embryologist in selecting the better spermatozoon for injection in an ICSI procedure.

Wildlife, both native and introduced, can harbor and spread diseases of importance to the livestock industry. Describing movement patterns of such wildlife is essential to formulate effective disease management strategies. Nilgai antelope (Boselaphus tragocamelus) are a free-ranging, introduced ungulate in southern Texas known to carry cattle fever ticks (CFT, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, R. (B.) annulatus). CFT are the vector for the etiological agent of bovine babesiosis, a lethal disease causing high mortality in susceptible Bos taurus populations and severely affecting the beef cattle industry. Efforts to eradicate CFT from the United States have been successful. However, a permanent quarantine area is maintained between Texas and Mexico to check its entry from infested areas of neighboring Mexico states on wildlife and stray cattle. In recent years, there has been an increase in CFT infestations outside of the permanent quarantine area in Texas. Nilgai are of interest in understanding how CFT may be spread through the landscape. Thirty nilgai of both sexes were captured and fitted with satellite radio collars in South Texas to gain information about movement patterns, response to disturbances, and movement barriers. Median annual home range sizes were highly variable in males (4665ha, range=571-20,809) and females (1606ha, range=848-29,909). Female movement patterns appeared to be seasonal with peaks during June-August; these peaks appeared to be a function of break-ups in female social groups rather than environmental conditions. Nilgai, which reportedly are sensitive to disturbance, were more likely to relocate into new areas immediately after being captured versus four other types of helicopter activities. Nilgai did not cross 1.25m high cattle fences parallel to paved highways but did cross other fence types. Results indicate that females have a higher chance of spreading CFT through the landscape than males, but spread of CFT may be mitigated via maintenance of cattle fences running parallel with paved highways. Our results highlight the importance of documenting species-specific behavior in wildlife-livestock interfaces that can be used to develop effective disease management strategies in the United States and worldwide.

RESUMO

This study aimed at assessing the interaction between subjective error estimation and frequency of extrinsic feedback in the learning of the basketball free shooting pattern by children. 10- to 12-year olds were assigned to 1 of 4 groups combining subjective error estimation and relative frequency of extrinsic feedback (33% × 100%). Analysis of performance was based on quality of movement pattern. Analysis showed superior learning of the group combining error estimation and 100% feedback frequency, both groups receiving feedback on 33% of trials achieved intermediate results, and the group combining no requirement of error estimation and 100% feedback frequency had the poorest learning. Our results show the benefit of subjective error estimation in association with high frequency of extrinsic feedback in children's motor learning of a sport motor pattern.

RESUMO

This paper investigates the advantage of using the kinematic theory of rapid human movements as a complementary approach to those based on classical dynamical features to characterize and analyze kindergarten children's ability to engage in graphomotor activities as a preparation for handwriting learning. This study analyzes nine different movements taken from 48 children evenly distributed among three different school grades corresponding to pupils aged 3, 4, and 5 years. On the one hand, our results show that the ability to perform graphomotor activities depends on kindergarten grades. More importantly, this study shows which performance criteria, from sophisticated neuromotor modeling as well as more classical kinematic parameters, can differentiate children of different school grades. These criteria provide a valuable tool for studying children's graphomotor control learning strategies. On the other hand, from a practical point of view, it is observed that school grades do not clearly reflect pupils' graphomotor performances. This calls for a large-scale investigation, using a more efficient experimental design based on the various observations made throughout this study regarding the choice of the graphic shapes, the number of repetitions and the features to analyze.

RESUMO

A great amount of research has been developed around the early cognitive impairments that best predict the onset of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Given that mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is no longer considered to be an intermediate state between normal aging and AD, new paths have been traced to acquire further knowledge about this condition and its subtypes, and to determine which of them have a higher risk of conversion to AD. It is now known that other deficits besides episodic and semantic memory impairments may be present in the early stages of AD, such as visuospatial and executive function deficits. Furthermore, recent investigations have proven that the hippocampus and the medial temporal lobe structures are not only involved in memory functioning, but also in visual processes. These early changes in memory, visual, and executive processes may also be detected with the study of eye movement patterns in pathological conditions like MCI and AD. In the present review, we attempt to explore the existing literature concerning these patterns of oculomotor changes and how these changes are related to the early signs of AD. In particular, we argue that deficits in visual short-term memory, specifically in iconic memory, attention processes, and inhibitory control, may be found through the analysis of eye movement patterns, and we discuss how they might help to predict the progression from MCI to AD. We add that the study of eye movement patterns in these conditions, in combination with neuroimaging techniques and appropriate neuropsychological tasks based on rigorous concepts derived from cognitive psychology, may highlight the early presence of cognitive impairments in the course of the disease.

RESUMO

Prochilodus lineatus is a reophilic migratory species of economical importance for local fisheries which is widely distributed in Brazil. The present study investigated diel and seasonal movement patterns, spawning migration and habitat use of P. lineatus in the Sinos River, Southern Brazil. Between August 2002 and March 2004, 19 grumatãs were tagged internally with digitally coded radio transmitters. Tracking was conducted weekly by boat or aircraft, and six fixed data loggers recorded movements of tagged fish. Results showed that the mean distance covered per fish and day was positively related with fish weight (p = 0.03; n = 19). Grumatã showed preference for river streches surrounded by wetlands (p < 0.001; n = 286). Their diel activity pattern displayed one peak at 7 hours, and a second at 15 hours. During the night, activity was significantly reduced (p = 0.01). The seasonal movements pattern showed increased activity in October 2002 - March 2003 and from October 2003 to January 2004. Multiple regression analysis did not show a significant relationship between distance covered and temperature or water level (p = 0.116; n = 19). No synchronized long distance spawning migrations were observed. The mean distance covered by the individuals/day showed a negative significant relationship with number of tracking days (p = 0.022; n = 19), indicating a higher probability of being captured for more mobile individuals. The preservation of the still existing wetlands and reduction of the fishing pressure are essential for the future conservation of the grumatã population of the Sinos River.

Grumatã showed preference for river streches surrounded by wetlands (p 0.001; n = 286).
