The Lerma-Chapala Basin, in Central Mexico, is geologically heterogeneous, climatically diverse and boasts high biodiversity, lying within two Biodiversity Hotspots, namely Mesoamerica and the Madrean Pine-Oak Woodlands. Epilithon and water samples were collected in the basin from 14 sampling sites three times each, two sampling campaigns during the rainy season and one in the dry season. A total of 274 infrageneric taxa in 48 genera were recorded. The taxonomic composition observed was dominated by taxa from the genera Nitzschia, Gomphonema, Pinnularia, Navicula, Sellaphora and Eunotia. About a third of the taxa found could not be identified to the species level. From those unidentified morphodemes, two are described as new species, namely Brachysira altepetlensis and Sellaphora queretana. Furthermore, Eolimna rhombica is transferred to Sellaphora. Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) revealed that specific conductivity and pH were the main environmental factors driving the community composition observed. Three groups of samples were identified after the CCA: 1) characterized by acidic waters and low conductivity; 2) with circumneutral waters, low specific conductivity and high temperature and phosphorous concentrations; and 3) characterized by circumneutral waters, high conductivity and low nitrogen concentrations. The indicator value method (IndVal), based on the relative abundance and relative frequency of the most abundant taxa was calculated based on the groups observed in the CCA, identifying the characteristic taxa for each of the three groups.

ResumenLos gradientes altitudinales representan un sistema apropiado para evaluar si existe una relación general entre los patrones de riqueza, variables ambientales, y los procesos ecológicos que determinan cuantas especies co-ocurren en un área dada.En cuanto a los peces de agua dulce en arroyos de montaña la relación prevalente es un decrecimiento monotónico en riqueza de especies con la altura. El objetivo de este estudio es evaluar cuatro hipótesis que pueden explicar la relación negativa entre la riqueza local de especies de peces y la altura, 1) hipótesis de la disminución de la energía disponible 2) hipótesis del aumento del rigor climático 3) hipótesis de la diversidad de hábitats e 4) hipótesis de la severidad de las condiciones físicas del hábitat que se presentan río arriba, relacionada a las dificultades para colonizar las partes altas de los ríos. Se recolectaron peces y macro-invertebrados en 83 sitios entre 200 a 4 000 m en dos cuencas en la Amazonía boliviana. La primera hipótesis fue evaluada mediante regresiones entre la densidad de macro-invertebrados, los peces invertívoros y la altura. Para evaluar la segunda y tercera hipótesis se realizó un análisis de regresión múltiple (GLM), entre la riqueza y varios factores locales y regionales. Se analizó también la disimilitud de los ensamblajes de peces sobre el gradiente altitudinal utilizando los índices βsim y βnes. Se encontró que la riqueza de peces disminuye de manera lineal con el aumento de la altura. La densidad de macroinvertebrados aumenta con la altura, contrariamente a la riqueza de peces invertívoros, sugiriendo que la energía no constituye un factor limitante para la colonización de las especies de peces en zonas altas. El GLM explicó un 86 % de la variación total de la riqueza, con un aporte significativo de la temperatura del agua, las pendientes máximas en el río principal y el ancho de río. El βsim presentó valores altos en niveles de altura bajos, mostrando mayor recambio de especies entre los sitios cercanos a la fuente de colonización. Inversamente, el βnes mostró valores mayores en las partes altas, correspondientes a cambios por pérdida de especies. Estos resultados sugieren que el rigor climático junto con la severidad física del hábitat crean barreras a la colonización y explican los cambios de riqueza en el gradiente altitudinal.
AbstractAltitudinal gradients represent an appropriate system to assess whether there is a relationship between richness patterns, environmental variables, and the ecological processes that determine the species type and number inhabiting a given area. In mountain streams freshwater fishes, the most prevalent relationship is a monotonic decrease in species richness with elevation. The objective of this study was to evaluate four hypotheses that can explain the negative relationship between local fish species richness and altitude, 1) the hypothesis of decreasing energy availability, 2) the hypothesis of increasing climate severity, 3) the hypothesis of habitat diversity, and 4) the hypothesis of isolation by physical severity of the environment. Fish and macro-invertebrates were collected following standard methods from 83 sites (between 200-4 000 meters) of two river basins in the Bolivian Amazon. The first hypothesis was tested by analyzing relationships between the density of macro-invertebrates, the richness of invertivorous fish species and altitude; while the second and third hypotheses were assessed by a multiple regression analysis (GLM) between fish species richness and several local and regional factors. Besides, assemblage dissimilarity between sites along the altitudinal gradient was analyzed using βsim and βness indices. Fish richness decreases linearly with increasing altitude. The density of macro-invertebrates tends to increase at higher altitudes, contrary to invertivorous fish species richness, suggesting that energy availability is not a limiting factor for fish species colonization. The GLM explained 86 % of the variation in fish species richness, with a significant contribution of water temperature, maximum slope in the river mainstem, and stream width. There is a higher species turnover (βsim) between sites at low elevation. Inversely, βness shows higher values in the upper parts, corresponding to change in assemblages mainly due to species loss. Taken together, these results suggest that climatic and physical severities create strong barriers to colonization, further explaining the decrease in fish richness along the altitudinal gradient.

Free-living amoebae (FLA) are protozoa that are widely distributed in nature. They are important in the cycling of nutrients in aquatic food chains, but their distribution in natural aquatic environments is not well known. We conducted a survey to determine the presence and distribution of FLA and their relation to some physicochemical parameters in streams of the Mexico Basin in Central Mexico. Thirty-two sites from 18 streams were sampled. Samples were centrifuged and cultured onto NNA-media to isolate amoebae. Identifications were based on morphology. The pathogenicity of Acanthamoeba isolates was tested. Oxygen saturation, temperature, pH, specific conductance, water flow, dissolved reactive phosphorus, nitrites, nitrates, ammonia, dissolved inorganic nitrogen and coliforms were determined. One hundred-and-twenty FLA representing 18 genera were identified. The most frequent genera were Vannella, Rosculus and Acanthamoeba. The frequency of potentially pathogenic FLA was low and only 3 Acanthamoeba isolates were invasive in mice. The highest species richness of FLA was found in streams located into agriculture activity areas and those close to small villages that discharge wastewater into them. Water temperatures were always below 17°C. Oxygen saturation and pH were within the limits for the growth of most FLA. The presence of Acanthamoeba and Naegleria was low; nevertheless, they include potentially pathogenic species and can act as vectors and reservoirs for microbial pathogens and can produce human infections.

The larva and pupa of Leptonema tridens Mosely, 1933 are described and illustrated. Larvae of L. tridens can be distinguished from other described larvae of Leptonema Guérin, 1843 mainly by the rodlike setae of the labrum and the forecoxa lacking processes, bearing only a row of spiniform setae on its inner surface. The specimens were collected in different localities of the Mantiqueira mountain range, Itatiaia massif, states of Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil. Larvae build typical hydropsychid shelters and are found in rapids, attached to rocky substrates. Gut content analysis revealed that larvae are omnivorous-filterers.

Floristic composition and distribution of the Andean subtropical riparian forests of Lules River, Tucuman, Argentina. We studied the floristic composition and distribution of the riparian forest of two hydrographical systems in a subtropical Andean region. Using uni and multivariate techniques, we tested the hypotheses that a differentiable riparian forest exists, composed by native vegetation typical of the Yungas phytogeographical province, and that the distribution of vegetation varied significantly with geomorphologic characteristics. Parallel transects along the water courses were used to collect presence-absence data of vegetation in eleven sites. Detrended Correspondence Analysis defined a group of common riparian species for the studied area (Solanum riparium, Phenax laevigatus, Tipuana tipu, Cestrum parqui, Carica quercifolia, Acacia macracantha, Celtis iguanaea, Juglans australis, Pisoniella arborescens, Baccharis salicifolia, Cinnamomum porphyrium and Eugenia uniflora) and identified two reference sites. The distribution of the riparian vegetation varied significantly with the geomorphic characteristics along the studied sites. Riparian habitats were composed by native and exotic species. A distinct riparian flora, different in structure and function from adjacent terrestrial vegetation, could not be identified. Riparian species were similar to the adjacent terrestrial strata. These species would not be limited by the proximity to the river. Anthropogenic impacts were important factors regulating the introduction and increase of exotic vegetation. Se estudió la composición florística y distribución de los bosques ribereños de dos sistemas hidrográficos en una región subtropical andina. Utilizando técnicas uni y multivariadas, se probó la hipótesis que existe un bosque ribereño diferenciable, compuesto por vegetación nativa típica de la provincia fitogeográfica de Yungas, y que la distribución de la vegetación varió significativamente con las características geomorfológicas. Transectos paralelos a lo largo de los cursos de agua se utilizaron para recolectar los datos de presencia-ausencia de vegetación en once sitios. El Análisis de Correspondencia definió un grupo de especies ribereñas común para el área estudiada (Solanum riparium, Phenax laevigatus, Tipuana tipu, Cestrum parqui, Carica quercifolia, Acacia macracantha, Celtis iguanaea, Juglans australis, Pisoniella arborescens, Baccharis salicifolia, Cinnamomum porphyrium y Eugenia uniflora) e identificó dos sitios de referencia. La distribución de la vegetación ribereña varió significativamente con las características geomorfológicas a lo largo de los sitios estudiados. Los hábitats ribereños estuvieron compuestos por especies nativas y exóticas. Una flora ribereña distintiva, diferente en estructura y función a la vegetación terrestre adyacente, no pudo ser identificada. Especies ribereñas fueron similares a los estratos terrestres adyacentes. Estas especies no estarían limitadas por la proximidad al río. Impactos antropogénicos fueron factores importantes que regulan la introducción y el incremento de la vegetación exótica. La falta de regulación de algunas actividades en la zona podría causar problemas graves en la integridad de este ecosistema.

O objetivo desse artigo foi inventariar as espécies de oligoquetos limnícolas que habitam córregos do Parque Estadual de Campos do Jordão (PECJ). As amostras revelaram 2302 indivíduos, distribuídos em três famílias (Naididae, Enchytraeidae, Tubificidae). Foram inventariadas 17 espécies, sendo elas: Achaeta sp., Allonais paraguayensis, Chaetogaster diastrophus, Nais communis, Nais variabilis, Pristina biserrata, Pristina leidyi, Pristina proboscidea, Pristinella jenkinae, Pristinella longidentata, Pristinella minuta, Pristinella notopora, Pristinella osborni, Pristinella sima, Aulodrilus limnobius, Botrioneurum sp. e Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri. O número total de espécies encontrado representa 24 por cento de todas as espécies de oligoquetos registrados em diversos ambientes aquáticos no Brasil (70), evidenciando a importância deste trabalho, visto que há ainda grandes lacunas no conhecimento da fauna de oligoquetos límnicos no Brasil.
This study inventoried stream oligochaetes of the Campos do Jordão State Park (CJSP), São Paulo, Brazil. A total of 2302 individuals of three families (Naididae, Enchytraeidae, Turbificidae) were obtained. Seventeen species were inventoried: Achaeta sp., Allonais paraguayensis, Chaetogaster diastrophus, Nais communis, Nais variabilis, Pristina biserrata, Pristina leidyi, Pristina proboscidea, Pristinella jenkinae, Pristinella longidentata, Pristinella minuta, Pristinella notopora, Pristinella osborni, Pristinella sima, Aulodrilus limnobius, Bothrioneurum sp., and Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri. The total number of species found represents 24 percent of all oligochaetes species (70) recorded in diverse aquatic environments in Brazil, making this inventory very important given the poor knowledge of this group in Brazil.
