RESUMO

This study aims to enhance understanding of mother-daughter communication about dating and romantic relationships. We explored how Mexican-origin, mostly immigrant mothers talked about these topics with their daughters (ages 13 to 16 years) using videotaped observational methods. Themes drawn from the maternal messages contained in the conversations of 132 mother-daughter dyads show that mothers promote positive decision-making among their daughters, advising them to take their time, choose partners wisely, insist on respect from boys, maintain autonomy in relationships, pursue education goals, and develop a sense of self-worth. Mothers expressed concern about their daughters being pressured or manipulated into having unwanted sex, which led to messages about negative partner dynamics predominating in conversations. Communication about risks, however, included only implicit advice about self-protective behaviours and few messages about the potential for dating violence and abuse. We discuss the implications for improving the design of sexual health communication programmes in which mothers and daughters jointly participate.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The objectives of this study were to determine the inheritance pattern by which familial mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (FMTLE) is segregated in Mexican families, and to identify if there was an association between the clinical characteristics and the inheritance pattern. METHOD: We included a total of 25 families with two or more members affected with MTLE during two years and elaborated a family pedigree for each family. The inheritance pattern was classified as autosomal dominant (AD) or autosomal recessive (AR), considering the affected members. We used statistical analysis association and differences between clinical characteristics and inheritance patterns. RESULTS: The affected families with the AD pattern were 15.7 fold times more likely to start seizures at 5 years of age or earlier than families with AR pattern, OR = 15.7 (IC 95% = 1.9-128.9). We observed a predominance and greater déjà vu association (64.4% vs 31.3%; p = 0.021), OR = 3.9 (CI 95% = 1.1-13.5) in patients with AD versus AR pattern. Finally, we identified that patients with AD pattern had a likelihood of presenting emotional alterations 5.6 times higher than AR (OR = 5.6, IC = 1.1-27.5). CONCLUSION: FMTLE is a heterogeneous syndrome, both phenotypically and genotypically; thus, our findings may be helpful for clinical use to perform an early diagnosis, to provide timely treatment, and to prevent comorbidities associated to this disease. However, in order to identify the possible genetic causes underlying these inheritance patterns, the use of molecular studies is necessary.

RESUMO

A mixed-method study identified profiles of fathers who mentioned key dimensions of their parenting and linked profile membership to adolescents' adjustment using data from 337 European American, Mexican American and Mexican immigrant fathers and their early adolescent children. Father narratives about what fathers do well as parents were thematically coded for the presence of five fathering dimensions: emotional quality (how well father and child get along), involvement (amount of time spent together), provisioning (the amount of resources provided), discipline (the amount and success in parental control), and role modeling (teaching life lessons through example). Next, latent class analysis was used to identify three patterns of the likelihood of mentioning certain fathering dimensions: an emotionally-involved group mentioned emotional quality and involvement; an affective-control group mentioned emotional quality, involvement, discipline and role modeling; and an affective-model group mentioned emotional quality and role modeling. Profiles were significantly associated with subsequent adolescents' reports of adjustment such that adolescents of affective-control fathers reported significantly more externalizing behaviors than adolescents of emotionally-involved fathers.

The following is an article of discussion associated with research whoseobjective is to present a position about the influence of family structures on student’s academic achievement. It includes a review on traditional and present family structure models in the United States, Latin America and especially in Mexico. The article presents the discussion as to how the internal family structure has been transforming due to external changes. This discussion leads us to think that there is a strong co-relation betweenthe family models where students are raised and the level of academic achievement they might obtain throughout their student’s life.
