RESUMO
Treatments without tooth extractions have become more popular over the last two decades. In this context, expansion of the maxillary arch is an interesting treatment option for cases in which space is required and other factors not favoring extractions (such as the facial profile) are present. According to several authors, this posterior expansion can be obtained using a system comprising self-ligating brackets and superelastic nickel-titanium arches. The present article aims to report a case of a young patient with Class II, Division 2 malocclusion, with impacted upper canines and significant arch length-tooth discrepancy. METHODS: The case was treated by means of a passive self-ligating appliance in association with Class II elastics and coil spring for distalizing the molars. This treatment alternative was effective for correcting Class II and obtaining space to correct tooth positioning.

Os bráquetes autoligáveis foram desenvolvidos há quase 100 anos. Porém, apenas recentemente, passaram a despertar o interesse dos ortodontistas. Após uma fase inicial de excessiva exaltação, atualmente é possível indicar com uma visão mais crítica o seu espaço na Ortodontia. Esses aparelhos apresentam uma série de vantagens, por isso têm sido cada vez mais utilizados. Um dos bráquetes autoligáveis disponíveis no mercado é o Empower (American Orthodontics, Sheboygan, WI, EUA). O objetivo deste trabalho foi discorrer sobre o sistema de bráquetes autoligáveis Empower e apresentar um caso clínico de um paciente com má oclusão de Classe II tratado com a utilização desse aparelho. Observou-se que o Empower apresenta uma série de características que o diferencia dos demais bráquetes autoligáveis, dentre as quais se destacam a versatilidade e o maior controle do tratamento. Após a avaliação do caso tratado pôde-se concluir que o tratamento foi realizado com sucesso e os aparelhos Empower e PowerScope contribuíram para isso.(AU)
Self-ligating brackets were developed almost 100 years ago. However, they have only recently attracted interest from the orthodontists. After an initial phase of excessive exaltation, it is now possible to indicate them with a more critical view of their space in Orthodontics. The self-ligating brackets have several advantages, so they have been increasingly used. Empower (American Orthodontics, Sheboygan, WI, USA) is one of the self-ligating brackets available in the market. The objective of this work was to discuss the Empower self-ligating bracket system and present a case report of a patient with Class II malocclusion treated with the use of this device. It was observed that the Empower presents a series of characteristics that distinguish it from other self-ligating brackets, such as versatility and greater treatment control. After assessment of the case treated, it was concluded that treatment was successfully performed and that Empower and PowerSCope devices contributed to this.(AU)
