Processes of water retention and movement and the hydraulic conductivity are altered in the rhizosphere. The aim of this study was to investigate the physical-hydric properties of soil aggregates in the rhizosphere of annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) cropped in a Kandiudalfic Eutrudox, taking into account aspects related to soil aggregate stability. Soil aggregates from rhizosphere soil (RZS) and soil between plant rows (SBP) were used to determine soil water retention curves (SWRCs) and saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat). In addition, properties related to soil aggregate stability, such as water-dispersible clay, soil organic carbon (SOC), and microbial activity, were also assessed. The higher microbial activity observed in the RZS was facilitated by increased SOC and microbial activity, resulting in improved soil aggregation (less water-dispersible clay). For nearly all measured matric potentials, RZS had a higher water content than SBP. This was attributed to the stability of aggregates, increase in SOC content, and the root exudates, which improved soil water retention. The increase in total porosity in RZS was associated with improved soil aggregation, which prevents deterioration of the soil pore space and results in higher Ksat and hydraulic conductivity as a function of the effective relative saturation in RZS compared to SBP.

O uso de herbicidas para o controle de plantas daninhas é ométodo mais empregado pela eficácia, rapidez e menor custo, porém poucos são os produtos registrados à cultura da canola. Diante disso, objetivou-se com os trabalhos avaliar a seletividade (ensaio I) e a eficácia (ensaio II) de herbicidas aplicados de modo isolado ou associados em pré e pós-emergência da canola para o controle de plantas daninhas. Os experimentos foram instalados em delineamento de blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. Em pré-emergência aplicou-se os herbicidas oxyfluorfen, pendimethalin, flumiozaxin, trifluralin e em pós-emergência o fluazifop-p-butil, mais as testemunhas capinada e infestada. Foram avaliadas a fitotoxicidade e as características fisiológicas no ensaio de seletividade, e o controle das plantas daninhas nabo, azevém eaveia preta no experimento de eficácia. Nos dois experimentos determinou-se os números de síliquas por planta, de grãos por síliqua, densidade de plantas, massa de mil grãos e a produtividade de grãos. O oxyfluorfen aplicado em isolado ou associado ao fluazifop-p-butil ocasionouas maiores fitotoxicidades ao híbrido de canola Diamond. As menores fitotoxicidades foram observadas para o pendimethalin e ao fluazifop-p-butil aplicados em isolado ou associados. Todos os herbicidas testados causaram estresse na concentração interna de CO2, transpiração, condutância estomática, atividade fotossintética, eficiência do uso da água e de carboxilação. O flumioxazin e o fluazifop-p-butil aplicados em pré e pós-emergência da canola apresentaram os melhores resultados para os componentes de rendimento de grãos da cultura, especialmente maior produtividade, juntamente com a testemunha capinada no ensaio de seletividade. Nenhum dos tratamentos com herbicidas controlaram adequadamente o nabo (experimento 2), e a presença desta planta daninha afetounegativamente os componentes de rendimento de grãos da canola. O fluazifop-p-butil aplicado em isolado ou associado ao oxifluorfen, pendimethalin, flumioxazin e trifluralin apresentaram os melhores controles de azevém e aveia preta.(AU)


The use of herbicides for weed control is the most used method due to its effectiveness, speed, and lower cost, but few products are registered for canola crops. In this way, the objective of this work was to evaluate the selectivity (experiment 1) and efficiency(experiment 2) of herbicides applied alone or in association in pre-and post-emergence of canola for weed control. The experiments were carried out in randomized blocks design, with four replications. In pre-emergence, the herbicides oxyfluorfen, pendimethalin, flumiozaxin, and trifluralin were applied, and in post-emergence, fluazifop-p-butyl, plus weeded and infested controls. Phytotoxicity and physiological characteristics were evaluated in the selectivity experiment, and the control of turnip, ryegrass, and black oat weeds were evaluated in the efficacy experiment. In both experiments, the number of siliques per plant, grains per silique, plant density, thousand-grain weight, and grain yield were determined. Oxyfluorfen applied alone or associated with fluazifop-p-butyl caused the highest phytotoxicity to the Diamond canola hybrid. The lowest phytotoxicities were observed for pendimethalin and fluazifop-p-butyl applied alone or in an association. All tested herbicides caused stress on internal CO2concentration, transpiration, stomatal conductance, photosynthetic activity, water use efficiency, and carboxylation efficiency. Flumioxazin and fluazifop-p-butyl applied pre-and post-emergence of canola showed the best results for the crop yield components, especially higher productivity, also with the weeded control in the selectivity experiment. None of the herbicide treatments controlled turnip properly (experiment 2), and the presence of this weed negatively affected canola yield components. Fluazifop-p-butyl applied alone or in association with oxyfluorfen, pendimethalin, flumioxazin, and trifluralin showed the best controls of ryegrass and black oat.(AU)

Lolium multiflorum grass is the major pollen allergen source in the southern region of Brazil, but most of its allergens remain poorly characterized. The aim of this study was to investigate antibody reactivity to L. multiflorum crude and carboxymethyl-ligand extracts in allergic patients and healthy individuals. Ion exchange carboxymethyl (CM) chromatography (CM-Sepharose) was used to isolate proteins (S2) from L. multiflorum crude extract (S1), which were assessed by SDS-PAGE. S1- and S2-specific IgE and IgG4 levels were measured by ELISA using sera from 55 atopic and 16 non-atopic subjects. Reactive polypeptide bands in S1 and S2 were detected by immunoblotting, and the most prominent bands in S2 were analyzed by mass spectrometry (MS-MS). Similar IgE and IgG4 levels were observed to both S1 (IgE median absorbance: 1.22; IgG4 median absorbance: 0.68) and S2 (IgE median absorbance: 1.26; IgG4 median absorbance: 0.85) in atopic subjects. S1 and S2 had positive correlations for IgE and IgG4 (IgE: r=0.9567; IgG4: r=0.9229; P<0.0001) levels. Homology between S1 and S2 was confirmed by IgE (84%) and IgG4 (83%) inhibition. Immunoblotting revealed that the 29-32 kDa band was recognized by 100% of atopic subjects in both S1 and S2. MS-MS analysis identified similarity profile to groups 1 and 5 grass allergens. This study revealed that carboxymethyl-ligand fraction played an important role for pollen allergy diagnosis by containing clinically relevant allergens and constituted a promising candidate for allergen-specific immunotherapy.

Na canola ocorrem perdas de produtividade e da qualidade de grãos em função da interferência causada pelo azevém (Lolium multiflorum). Diante disso, objetivou-se avaliar a interferência e identificar variáveis explicativas visando determinar o nível de dano econômico (NDE) de diferentes densidades do azevém infestante de híbridos de canola. O experimento foi instalado em delineamento de blocos casualizados, com uma repetição. Os tratamentos foram compostos pelos híbridos de canola (Hyola 433, Hyola 61, Alht B4, Hyola 575 CL e Hyola 76) e 12 densidades de azevém, de 0 até 260 plantas m-2, em competição com a cultura. Avaliou-se aos 50 dias após a emergência das plantas as variáveis densidades de plantas, área foliar, cobertura de solo e massa seca da parte aérea do azevém. A produtividade de grãos, custo de controle, preço de grãos e eficiência de controle foram determinados na canola. A cobertura do solo apresentou melhor ajuste ao modelo da hipérbole retangular estimando adequadamente as perdas de produtividades de grãos pela interferência do azevém. Os híbridos de canola Hyola 433, Hyola 575 CL e Hyola 76 foram os mais competitivos ao se comparar com os demais na presença do azevém, porém demonstraram as menores produtividades de grãos e também os que apresentaram os maiores valores de NDE. Os híbridos de canola Hyola 433 e Hyola 575 CL apresentaram os maiores valores de NDE com 3,85 a 5,13 plantas m-2 em todas as simulações realizadas, respectivamente. Os menores valores de NDE foram obtidos com os híbridos Hyola 61, Alht B4 e Hyola 76 com variações médias de 1,02 à 2,15 plantas m-2, respectivamente. A produtividade de grãos de canola, o preço da saca, a eficiência do herbicida e a redução no custo de controle, causam variação dos valores do NDE.(AU)


In canola, yield and grain quality losses occur due to the interference caused by ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) when infesting the crop. Thus, the objective was to evaluate the interference and identify explanatory variables seeking to determine the level of economic damage (NDE) of different densities of ryegrass infesting canola hybrids. The experiment was carried out in a randomized block design, with one replication. The treatments consisted of five canola hybrids (Hyola 433, Hyola 61, Alht B4, Hyola 575 CL and Hyola 76) and 12 ryegrass densities, from 0 to 260 plants m-2, in competition with the crop. At 50 days after plant emergence, the variables as plant densities, leaf area, soil cover and shoot dry matter of ryegrass plants were evaluated. Grain yield, control cost, grain price and control efficiency were determined in canola plants. The soil cover presented the best fit to the rectangular hyperbola model, adequately estimating the grain yield losses due to ryegrass interference. The canola hybrids Hyola 433 and Hyola 575 CL were the most competitive when compared to the others in the presence of the competitor, with higher values of EDL. The canola hybrids Hyola 433 and Hyola 575 CL showed the highest EDL values with 3.85 to 5.13 plants m-2in all simulations performed, respectively. The lowest EDL values were obtained with hybrids Hyola 61, Alht B4and Hyola 76 with average variations of 1.02 to 2.15 plants m-2, respectively. The canola grain yield, grain bag price, efficiency of the herbicide, and the reduction in the control cost cause variation in the economic damage level values.(AU)

Plants have evolved mechanisms to survive herbivory. One such mechanism is the induction of defences upon attack that can operate intergenerationally. Cool-season grasses (sub-family Pooideae) obtain defences via symbiosis with vertically transmitted fungal endophytes (genus Epichloë) and can also show inducible responses. However, it is unknown whether these herbivore-induced responses can have intergenerational effects. We hypothesized that herbivory by aphids on maternal plants induces the intergenerational accumulation of endophyte-derived defensive alkaloids and resistance intensification in the progeny. We subjected mother plants symbiotic or not with Epichloë occultans, a species known for its production of anti-insect alkaloids known as lolines, to the aphid Rhopalosiphum padi. Then, we evaluated the progeny of these plants in terms of loline alkaloid concentration, resistance level (through herbivore performance), and shoot biomass. Herbivory on mother plants did not increase the concentration of lolines in seeds but it tended to affect loline concentration in progeny plants. There was an overall herbivore-induced intergenerational effect increasing the endophyte-conferred defence and resistance. Symbiotic plants were more resistant to aphids and had higher shoot biomass than their non-symbiotic counterparts. Since maternal herbivory did not affect the loline concentrations in seeds, the greater resistance of the progeny could have resulted from an inherited mechanism of epigenetic regulation. It would be interesting to elucidate the origin of this regulation since it could come from the host or the fungal symbiont. Thus, endophyte-driven differential fitness between symbiotic and non-symbiotic plants might be higher as generations pass on in presence of herbivores.

Our aim was to evaluate whether increasing soluble carbohydrates in the herbage by changing the time of the grazing session or including Acacia mearnsii tannin in the diet would affect intake, digestion, N partitioning, and productive performance of dairy cows fed a diet combining ryegrass herbage with partial total mixed ration (PMR). We hypothesized that both strategies could reduce the concentration of NH3-N in the rumen, reducing urinary N excretion. Nine Holstein cows were used in a triplicate 3 × 3 Latin square experiment with 3 experimental periods of 22 d. The cows were fed a fixed amount of PMR [60% of the predicted individual dry matter intake (DMI)], and an unrestricted amount of herbage in 1 grazing session of 5 h/d. The treatments were (1) morning grazing session and afternoon PMR meal (AM); (2) morning PMR meal and afternoon grazing session (PM); and (3) morning grazing session and afternoon PMR meal supplemented with 15.0 g of tannins/kg of PMR dry matter (TAN). Milk production was not affected by treatments. Although the protein concentration was lower for TAN than for PM, no differences were detected for the yield of any component between treatments. The concentration of individual or grouped fatty acids in milk fat was not affected by treatments, except for 16:1 cis-9 and Δ9-desaturase ratios 14:1/14:0 and 16:1/16:0, which were lower for TAN. Treatments did not affect total DMI, but PM tended to increase herbage DMI and reduce dry matter and crude protein digestibilities. Treatments did not affect cow eating and ruminating behavior except for the proportion of time spent eating PMR, which was higher for PM and TAN. Although no relevant effects of treatments on ruminal fermentation, purine derivatives excretion in urine, or N excretion in milk were detected, both PM and TAN decreased the total N excreted in urine by an average of 8% compared with AM. In conclusion, changing the grazing session from the morning to the afternoon and including tannins in the diet were effective in decreasing the excretion of urinary N but did not change the productive performance of dairy cows fed PMR and ryegrass herbage.

This study determined the effect of different defoliation frequencies in a long-cycle ryegrass cultivar on yield components and the physiological and sanitary quality of seeds. Four defoliation frequencies were applied (without, one, two, and three defoliations). The time between defoliations was 350 degree-days. At the first, second, and third defoliation time, the plants were 15 cm, 20 cm, and 35 cm, respectively, and were lowered to half their height. The yield components and plant structure were evaluated through the tillers, along with the physiological quality of the seeds, which was verified by germination tests, first germination count, accelerated aging, tetrazolium test, field emergence, and weight of a thousand seeds. For the sanitary quality analysis, the percentage (%) of fungi incidence in the seeds was verified. The second defoliation determined the seeds' high physiological and sanitary quality due to the higher amount of primary and secondary tillers produced concerning the other treatments. However, there was no significant difference for the third defoliation since the aerial tillers issued the same quality of seeds originated from primary and secondary tillers. The average incidence of fungi such as Colletotrichum sp., Fusarium sp., Phoma sp., and Dreshslera spp. was lower in ryegrass plants subjected to three defoliations.


O presente estudo teve como objetivo determinar o efeito de diferentes frequências de desfolha em uma cultivar de azevém de ciclo longo, sobre os componentes de rendimento e a qualidade fisiológica e sanitária das sementes. Foram aplicadas quatro frequências de desfolhas (sem, uma, duas e três). O tempo entre desfolhas foi de 350 graus-dia. No momento da primeira, segunda e terceira desfolha as plantas estavam com 15 cm, 20 cm e 35 cm, respectivamente e foram rebaixadas para metade de suas alturas. Avaliaram-se os componentes de rendimento e a estrutura das plantas por meio dos perfilhos, juntamente com a qualidade fisiológica das sementes, a qual foi verificada por testes de germinação, primeira contagem de germinação, envelhecimento acelerado, teste de tetrazólio, emergência a campo e peso de mil sementes. Para a análise da qualidade sanitária verificou-se a porcentagem (%) de incidência de fungos nas sementes. A segunda desfolha determinou alta qualidade fisiológica e sanitária das sementes devido a maior quantidade de perfilhos primários e secundários produzidos em relação aos demais tratamentos. No entanto não houve diferença significativa para a terceira desfolha, visto que nos perfilhos aéreos emitidos observou-se a mesma qualidade das sementes originadas de perfilhos primários e secundários. A incidência média de fungos como Colletotrichum sp., Fusarium sp., Phoma sp. e Dreshsleras pp. foi menor em plantas de azevém submetidas a três desfolhas.

This study aimed to evaluate the morphogenic and structural characteristics and the population stability index of ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) tillers when the pasture was submitted to two stocking methods during grazing cycles. The experimental design was a complete randomized block, with repeated measurements over time (n=6 cycles), two treatments (stocking methods) and three area replicates. In the continuous stocking method, the highest population density of tillers was observed. The highest tiller weight occurred in the rotational stocking method. The morphogenic variables and the other structural variables were not altered by the stocking methods and showed differences during the grazing cycles. The tiller population stability index was similar in the two pasture management strategies, and both can be used for ryegrass management considering this parameter.


Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar as características morfogênicas, estruturais e o índice de estabilidade populacional de perfilhos do azevém (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) quando a pastagem foi submetida a dois métodos de lotação, durante ciclos de pastejo. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos completos casualizados, com medidas repetidas ao longo do tempo (n = 6 ciclos), dois tratamentos (métodos de lotação) e três repetições de área. No método de lotação contínua, foi observada a maior densidade populacional de perfilhos. O maior peso de perfilhos ocorreu no método de lotação rotativa. As variáveis morfogênicas e as demais variáveis estruturais não foram alteradas pelos métodos de lotação e apresentaram diferenças durante os ciclos de pastejo. O índice de estabilidade populacional de perfilhos foi semelhante nas duas estratégias de manejo do pasto e ambas podem ser utilizadas para o manejo do azevém considerando-se esse parâmetro.

Although inoculating soybean with rhizobia for biological nitrogen fixation is a common practice in agriculture, rhizobia are also known to associate with grasses. In this study, we evaluate the potential utility of the rhizobial strains SEMIA 587 and 5019 (Bradyrhizobium elkanii), 5079 (Bradyrhizobium japonicum), and 5080 (Bradyrhizobium diazoefficiens), recommended for Brazilian soybean inoculation, in colonizing black oat plants and promoting growth in black and white oats, and ryegrass. Inoculation of white oats with SEMIA 587 increase the seed germination (SG) by 32.09%, whereas the SG of black oats inoculated with SEMIA 587 and 5019 increased by 40.38% and 37.85%, respectively. Similarly, inoculation of ryegrass with all strains increased SG values between 24.63 and 27.59%. In addition, white oats with SEMIA 587 and 5080 had root areas significantly superior to those in other treatments, whereas inoculation with SEMIA 5079 and 5080 resulted in the highest volume of roots. Likewise, SEMIA 5079 and 5080 significantly increased the length, volume, and area of black oats roots, whereas SEMIA 587 increased the volume, area, and dry mass of roots and shoot. Inoculation in ryegrass with SEMIA 587 significantly increased the root volume. Moreover, most strains transformed with gfp and gus were observed to colonize the roots of black oats. Collectively, the findings of this study indicate that rhizobial strains recommended for inoculation of soybean can also be used to promote the growth of the three assessed grass species, and are able to colonize the roots of black oats.

Ground-level ozone is a global air pollutant with high toxicity and represents a threat to plants and microorganisms. Although beneficial microorganisms can improve host performance, their role in connecting environmentally induced maternal plant phenotypes to progeny (transgenerational effects [TGE]) is unknown. We evaluated fungal endophyte-mediated consequences of maternal plant exposure to ozone on performance of the progeny under contrasting scenarios of the same factor (high and low) at two stages: seedling and young plant. With no variation in biomass, maternal ozone-induced oxidative damage in the progeny that was lower in endophyte-symbiotic plants. This correlated with an endophyte-mediated higher concentration of proline, a defence compound associated with stress control. Interestingly, ozone-induced TGE was not associated with reductions in plant survival. On the contrary, there was an overall positive effect on seedling survival in the presence of endophytes. The positive effect of maternal ozone increasing young plant survival was irrespective of symbiosis and only expressed under high ozone condition. Our study shows that hereditary microorganisms can modulate the capacity of plants to transgenerationally adjust progeny phenotype to atmospheric change.

The goal of this work was to assess the biomass production and bromatological quality of ryegrass genotypes in ten municipalities of the Western and North Plateau regions of the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil. The cultivars La Estanzuela 284 (diploid), Bar HQ, Barjumbo, INIA Escorpio, Potro, and Winter Star (tetraploids) were compared, distributed in a randomized block design, in which the municipalities constituted the blocks, with three replications. The cuts were performed when the plants reached 30cm, leaving a residue of 10cm. In three cuts, the cultivars Barjumbo and Bar HQ were the most productive, exceeding 4.6 t ha-1 of dry matter. In the places in which five cuts were performed, the production of these cultivars exceeded 7.3 t ha-1, placing them again ahead of the others. The average crude protein content in three cuts was greater than 25% in all cultivars. There was no difference between the genotypes in the content of neutral detergent fiber and total digestible nutrients. There was a significant correlation between quantitative and qualitative productive variables. The assessed cultivars represented good options for composing short-term or long-term winter-feeding systems, adjusted to the integration with annual crops or warm-season pastures.(AU)


O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a produção de biomassa e qualidade bromatológica de genótipos de azevém, em dez municípios das regiões Oeste e Planalto Norte Catarinense, Estado de Santa Catarina, Brasil. Foram comparados os cultivares La Estanzuela 284 (diploide), Bar HQ, Barjumbo, INIA Escorpio, Potro e Winter Star (tetraploides), distribuídos em um delineamento blocos casualizados, em que os municípios constituíram os blocos, com três repetições. Os cortes foram realizados quando as plantas atingiram 30cm, deixando um resíduo de 10cm. Sob três cortes, os cultivares Barjumbo e Bar HQ foram os mais produtivos, ultrapassando 4,6 t ha-1 de matéria seca. Nos locais em que ocorreram cinco cortes, a produção destes cultivares superou 7,3 t ha-1, posicionando-os novamente à frente dos demais. O teor médio de proteína bruta em três cortes foi superior a 25% em todos os cultivares. Não houve diferença entre os genótipos no teor de fibra detergente neutro e de nutrientes digestíveis totais. Verificou-se correlação significativa entre variáveis produtivas quantitativas e qualitativas. Os cultivares testados representam boas opções para compor sistemas forrageiros hiberno-primaveris de curta ou longa duração, ajustando-se à integração com lavouras ou pastagens anuais de estação quente.(AU)

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to evaluate the antagonistic effect of the mixture ofacetyl coenzyme-A carboxylase (ACCase) enzyme inhibiting herbicides and auxin herbicides in Lolium multiflorum and to determine mechanisms to mitigate this possible effect. The first experiments were conducted by associating the herbicide clethodim (108 g a.i. ha−1), quizalofop-p-ethyl (54 g a.i. ha−1), and clethodim + quizalofop-p-ethyl (108+54 g a.i. ha−1) with 2,4-D (1005 g a.e. ha−1) or triclopyr (720 g a.e. ha−1), in addition to the sole application of the respective graminicides. Another experiment included clethodim (54; 81; 108; 162; 216 g a.i. ha−1), quizalofop-p-ethyl (27; 40.5; 54; 81; 108 g a.i. ha−1), and clethodim + quizalofop-p-ethyl (54+27; 81+40.5; 108+54; 162+81; 216+108 g a.i. ha−1) mixed with 2,4-D (1005 g a.e. ha−1), or triclopyr (720 g a.e. ha−1), in addition to the control treatments without herbicide application. The herbicide clethodim + quizalofop-p-ethyl did not present an antagonistic interaction with the auxin herbicides, and obtained 85% weed control. To obtain control similar to the sole application of this graminicide, the dose of the herbicide clethodim needs to be increased by 20%. However, the mixture of the herbicide quizalofop-p-ethyl with 2,4-D and triclopyr affects the ryegrass control. The use of strategies that increase the absorption of ACCase herbicides or the inhibition of P450 enzymes are ways to mitigate the antagonistic effect caused by the association of the two auxin herbicides.


RESUMO: O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar o efeito antagônico da mistura de herbicidas inibidores da enzima ACCase e herbicidas auxínicos em Lolium multiflorum e determinar mecanismos de mitigação deste possível efeito. No primeiro momento foram conduzidos experimentos associando o herbicida clethodim (108 g i.a. ha-1), quizalofop-p-ethyl (54 g i.a. ha-1) e clethodim + quizalofop-p-ethyl (108 + 54 g i.a. ha-1) com 2,4-D (1005 g e.a. ha-1) ou triclopyr (720 g e.a. ha-1), além da aplicação isolada dos respectivos graminicidas. When not controlled efficiently, weeds in wheat crop stands may affect both the grain quality and yield production. This work aimed to assess the selectivity and efficacy of herbicides applied to control weeds in the wheat cultivar TBIO Sinuelo. Two experiments were set upto assess the selectivity and the efficacy of herbicides applied to wheatin randomized blocks designwith four replications. Treatments tested were: iodosulfuron, pyroxsulam, metsulfuron-methyl, 2,4-D, clodinafop-propargyl, [bentazon + imazamox], saflufenacil, bentazon, carfentrazone-ethyl, imazamox, pendimethalin, [sulfentrazone + diuron], plus two control treatments, one weeded and the other infested. The greatest damages to wheat were caused by imazamox and the commercial mixture [bentazon + imazamox] with phytotoxicity of approximately 50%. On the other hand, applyingthe commercial mixture [sulfentrazone + diuron] allowed the highest wheat grain yield. The use of clodinafop-propargyl and pyroxsulam promoted the best control of Lolium multiflorum, with 100 and 98.25% at 21 days after treatment application, respectively. The control above 90% of Raphanus raphanistrumwas reported with iodosulfuron, pyroxsulam, metsulfuron-methyl, 2,4-D, [bentazon + imazamox], saflufenacil, bentazon, and carfentrazone. Clodinafop-propargyl was the most efficient on ryegrass, and iodosulfuron, pyroxsulam, metsulfuron-methyl, 2,4-D, saflufenacil, and carfentrazone performed best on the turnip. Pyroxsulam was the treatment that showed, in both experiments, the best results for all-grain yield components, especially for grain yield.


As plantas daninhas ocasionam efeitos negativos na produtividade e na qualidade dos grãos da cultura do trigo quando não controladas de modo eficiente. Assim sendo, objetivou-se com os trabalhos avaliar a seletividadee a eficácia deherbicidas aplicados para o manejo de plantas daninhas infestante da cultivar de trigo TBIO Sinuelo. Foram instalados dois experimentos, um para avaliar a seletividade e outro a eficácia de herbicidas aplicados em trigo, em blocos casualizados, com quatrorepetições. Os tratamentos testados foram: iodosulfuron, pyroxsulam, metsulfuron-methyl, 2,4-D, clodinafope-propargil, [bentazon + imazamox], saflufenacil, bentazon, carfentrazone-ethyl, imazamox, pendimethalin, [sulfentrazone + diuron], mais duas testemunhas uma capinada e outra infestada. Os herbicidas que ocasionaram as maiores injúrias ao trigo foram o imazamox e a mistura comercial de [bentazon + imazamox] com fitotoxicidade próxima a 50%. A aplicação da mistura comercial de [sulfentrazone + diuron] demonstrou a maior produtividade de grãos do trigo. O uso de clodinafope-propargil e pyroxsulam apresentaram os melhores controles de Lolium multiflorum, com100 e 98,25%, aos 21 dias após a aplicação dos tratamentos, respectivamente. Ocorreu controle acimade 90% de Raphanus raphanistrumcom uso de iodosulfuron, pyroxsulam, metsulfuron-methyl, 2,4-D, [bentazon + imazamox], saflufenacil, bentazon e carfentrazone. O clodinafope-propargil demonstra o maior controle para o azevém e o iodosulfuron-ethyl, pyroxsulam, metsulfurom-metílico, 2,4-D, saflufenacil e carfentrazone para o nabo. O pyroxsulam foi o tratamento que demonstrou, nos dois experimentos, os melhores resultados para os componentes da produção, especialmente para a produtividade da cultura.

Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) is a troublesome weed widely found in temperate Brazilian fields with several herbicide-resistant populations. Soil seed bank is the main source of future infestations and can be strongly affected by agricultural practices, such as crop rotation and tillage system. Therefore, this study evaluated the long-term effects of different crop rotation and tillage systems on the seed bank of Italian ryegrass. Data were collected in 2012 and 2013 in a field managed since 1985 under conventional-tillage and no-tillage and subjected to three cropping systems (monoculture, total, and partial rotation) compared to the control plot. The samples were collected at three soil depths (0-5, 5-10, and 10-20 cm) using a cylindrical soil sampler, and infestations in the field were evaluated with a sample frame of 1 m². All cropping systems reduced the soil seed bank of Italian ryegrass, regardless of soil management and sampling depths comparing to the control plot. Total and partial rotation were more effective than soil tillage to reduce the seed bank. A larger number of seeds was observed on the surface layer (0-5 cm) for all cropping systems with more uniform distribution in the soil profile in conventional-tillage. Infestation of Italian ryegrass was greater for monoculture under no-tillage in both years, whereas in total and partial rotation, regardless of soil tillage, infestations remained below 40 seedlings m². Thus, strategies to reduce the soil seed bank and infestations of Italian ryegrass should focus on cropping systems with crop rotation and no-tillage.(AU)

Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) is a weed broadly found in fields cultivated with wheat and barley crops. Seed inputs into the soil before harvesting winter crops increase seed bank, ensuring survival. This study evaluated the persistence of Italian ryegrass seeds subjected to burial depths over time. Experiments were carried out in the field for two years in randomized block experimental design with four repetitions. Dormant seeds harvested from mother-plants were put in nylon bags containing soil. Previously, seed viability was evaluated in a 1 % tetrazolium solution, and 50 viable seeds by repetition were buried at 0.5, 5.0, 10, and 20 cm depths. Seed persistence was evaluated by the percentage of deteriorated and remaining seeds, non-dormant seeds, abnormal seedlings, and viable and non-viable dormant seeds at 0, 30, 60, 90, 180, 360, 540, and 720 days after burial (DAB). Seed persistence increased at 10 and 20 cm of burial depth compared to seeds in the soil layers up to 5 cm. Moreover, burial depth at 10 and 20 cm showed lower percentage of deteriorated seeds (10 % lower) compared to 0.5 cm at 360 DAB. For non-dormant seeds, a higher percentage was found at 90 DAB, regardless of seed burial depth. Dormancy breakage occurred until 180 DAB, and more rapidly at 10 and 20 cm depths. At 540 DAB, more than 95 % of seeds were unviable, demonstrating short persistence of Italian ryegrass in the soil seed bank.(AU)

Nutrient cycling represents an important nutrient source in the Integrated Crop-Livestock Systems (ICLS). In general, only the crop phase of the ICLS is fertilized, however little is known about this residual effect of nitrogen fertilization from summer crop to succeeding winter pasture. This research aimed to evaluate the forage growth dynamic and botanical composition of a mixed pasture of black oat (Avena strigosa Schreb) and ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) affected by two canopy height managements (high and low) and nitrogen fertilization applied to either the summer crop (corn) or winter pasture phase of an ICLS. The experiment was established in 2012 in southern Brazil. Black oat and ryegrass were growing during winter season and corn (Zea mays L.) during summer season, being this paper related to the 2014 pasture period. Treatments were composed by two canopy heights (25 and 10 cm) and two N-Fertilization Times (N-Pasture or N-Corn) of 200 kg of N ha-1. Canopy height was regulated by beef steers grazing through continuous stocking with a variable stocking rate. Forage mass was lower in the 10 cm canopy height on average, however this forage mass was composed by greater proportion of ryegrass leaves and lower proportion of dead material in relation to the treatment with 25 cm canopy height. The N-fertilization applied directly on pasture phase (N-Pasture) increased forage mass, tiller population density, participation of ryegrass and ryegrass leaf proportion in the forage mass. Furthermore, when pasture was fertilized with N, the forage accumulation rate increased about 69%, highlighting that the corn N-fertilization did not present significant effect on forage productivity. The residual effect of corn N-fertilization was not enough to maintain high forage accumulation. Thus, the pasture N-fertilization is fundamental to keep high-productive crop-livestock system. (AU)


A ciclagem de nutrientes representa uma importante fonte de nutrientes em sistemas de Integração Lavoura-Pecuária (ILP). Em geral, apenas a fase de lavoura é fertilizada, entretanto pouco se sabe sobre esse efeito residual da adubação nitrogenada realizada na lavoura de verão para as pastagens de inverno em sucessão. Esse trabalho objetivou avaliar a dinâmica de acúmulo de forragem e a composição botânica de uma pastagem mista de aveia preta (Avena strigosa Schreb) e azevém (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) manejada com duas alturas do pasto (alta e baixa) e com adubação nitrogenada realizada na cultura de grãos (milho) ou na fase pastagem de um sistema ILP. O experimento foi estabelecido em 2012 no sul do Brasil. Aveia preta e azevém eram cultivados durante o inverno e milho para grãos (Zea mays L.) era cultivado durante o verão, sendo esse trabalho relacionado ao período de pastagem em 2014. Os tratamentos foram compostos por duas alturas de manejo do pasto (25 e 10 cm) e duas épocas de adubação nitrogenada no sistema ILP (N-Pastagem ou N-Milho), na dose de 200 kg de N ha-1. A altura do pasto foi regulada por meio de pastejo com lotação contínua e taxa de lotação variável de novilhos de corte. Em média, a massa de forragem foi menor na altura do pasto de 10 cm, entretanto essa massa de forragem foi composta por uma maior proporção de folhas de azevém e menor proporção de material morto em relação ao tratamento com 25 cm. A adubação nitrogenada realizada diretamente na fase pastagem (N-Pastagem) aumentou a massa de forragem, a densidade populacional de perfilhos, a participação de azevém e a porcentagem de folhas de azevém na massa de forragem. Além disso, a adubação nitrogenada na fase pastagem aumentou a taxa de acúmulo de forragem em 69%, evidenciando que não há efeito significativo da adubação feita na lavoura de milho sobre a produtividade de forragem. O efeito residual da adubação nitrogenada na fase lavoura (milho) não foi suficiente para manter o alto acúmulo de forragem. Dessa forma, a adubação nitrogenada da fase pastagem em sistema ILP é fundamental para manter esses sistemas de produção agrícola e pecuária altamente produtivos. (AU)
