RESUMO

The perineuronal net (PNN) is a well-described highly specialized extracellular matrix structure found in the central nervous system. Thus far, no reports of its presence or connection to pathological processes have been described in the peripheral nervous system. Our study demonstrates the presence of a PNN in the spinal afferent innervation of the distal colon of mice and characterizes structural and morphological alterations induced in an ulcerative colitis (UC) model. C57Bl/6 mice were given 3% dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) to induce acute or chronic UC. L6/S1 dorsal root ganglia (DRG) were collected. PNNs were labeled using fluorescein-conjugated Wisteria Floribunda (WFA) l lectin, and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) immunofluorescence was used to detect DRG neurons. Most DRG cell bodies and their extensions toward peripheral nerves were found surrounded by the PNN-like structure (WFA+), labeling neurons' cytoplasm and the pericellular surfaces. The amount of WFA+ neuronal cell bodies was increased in both acute and chronic UC, and the PNN-like structure around cell bodies was thicker in UC groups. In conclusion, a PNN-like structure around DRG neuronal cell bodies was described and found modulated by UC, as changes in quantity, morphology, and expression profile of the PNN were detected, suggesting a potential role in sensory neuron peripheral sensitization, possibly modulating the pain profile of ulcerative colitis.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) negatively impacts quality of life and increases healthcare costs. Lubiprostone stimulates the secretion of intestinal fluid, in turn facilitating the passage of stools and alleviating associated symptoms. Lubiprostone has been available in Mexico since 2018, but its clinical efficacy has not been studied in a Mexican population. AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of lubiprostone, assessed by changes in spontaneous bowel movement (SBM) frequency after one week of treatment with 24 µg oral lubiprostone (b.i.d.), as well as its safety, over four weeks of treatment. STUDY: Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study on 211 adults with CIC in Mexico. RESULTS: The increase in SBM frequency, after one week of treatment, was significantly higher in the lubiprostone group than in the placebo group (mean: 4.9 [SD: 4.45] vs. 3.0 [3.14], p = 0.020). Secondary efficacy endpoints revealed a significantly higher proportion of SBM frequency/week in the lubiprostone group at weeks 2, 3, and 4. There was a better response within 24 h after the first dose with lubiprostone vs. placebo (60.0% vs. 41.5%; OR: 2.08, CI95%: [1.19, 3.62], p = 0.009) and the lubiprostone group also had significant improvement, with respect to straining, stool consistency, abdominal bloating, and Satisfaction Index. The main adverse events were gastrointestinal disorders in 13 (12.4%) lubiprostone-treated subjects and 4 (3.8%) control subjects. CONCLUSIONS: Our data confirm the efficacy and safety of lubiprostone for the treatment of CIC in a Mexican population. Lubiprostone treatment induces relief from the most bothersome symptoms associated with constipation.

Euphractus sexcinctus has a diverse diet, so it needs anatomical and habitual features to help it get its meals. Therefore, the objective is to study the morphology of the small and large intestines of the six-banded armadillo (E. sexcinctus). The research was authorized and approved under number 136/16. Six animals, obtained from victims of predatory hunting, were dissected for the research. For the anatomical analysis, the specimens were dissected and photographed. The fragments of each organ were submitted to histological routine to obtain slides stained with hematoxylin-eosin, toluidine blue and Masson's trichrome for further analysis. The small intestine has three parts: duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. Histologically, it has the typical four layers of tubular organs. The mucosa is covered by simple cylindrical epithelium with the presence of specializations in the form of microvilli and variation in the number of goblet cells, depending on the portion observed. In the duodenal portion, the presence of the serous layer was not observed. In the jejunal portion, it is possible to observe lymphoid tissue aggregates in the submucosa, which become more evident in the ileum. The large intestine is divided into cecum, colon, and rectum and has the same histological subdivisions as the small intestine, but with some specializations. The presence of simple cylindrical intestinal crypts is clearly observed and the presence of a large number of goblet cells, which increase as it approaches the rectum. In the submucosa of the large intestine, the presence of organized lymphoid plaques is detected. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: The presence of large numbers of goblet cells, which increase as one approaches the rectum. The presence of organized lymphoid plaques is detected. The duodenal portion was not observed presence of the serous layer.

Thiolation can convert molybdate (MoO4) into a series of thiomolybdates (MoSxO4-x) in the rumen, terminating in tetrathiomolybdate (MoS4), a potent antagonist of copper absorption and, if absorbed, donor of reactive sulphide in tissues. Systemic exposure to MoS4 increases trichloroacetic acid-insoluble copper (TCAI Cu) concentrations in the plasma of ruminants and induction of TCAI Cu in rats given MoO4 in drinking water would support the hypothesis that rats, like ruminants, can thiolate MoO4. Data on TCAI Cu are presented from two experiments involving MoO4 supplementation that had broader objectives. In experiment 1, plasma Cu concentrations (P Cu) tripled in female rats infected with Nippostrongylus brasiliensis after only 5 days exposure to drinking water containing 70 mg Mo L-1, due largely to an increase in TCAI Cu; activities of erythrocyte superoxide dismutase and plasma caeruloplasmin oxidase (CpOA) were unaffected. Exposure for 45-51 days did not raise P Cu further but TCA-soluble (TCAS) Cu concentrations increased temporarily 5 days post infection (dpi) and weakened the linear relationship between CpOA and TCAS Cu. In experiment 2, infected rats were given less MoO4 (10 mg Mo L-1), with or without iron (Fe, 300 mg L-1), for 67 days and killed 7 or 9 dpi. P Cu was again tripled by MoO4 but co-supplementation with Fe reduced TCAI Cu from 65 ± 8.9 to 36 ± 3.8 µmol L-l. Alone, Fe and MoO4 each reduced TCAS Cu in females and males when values were higher (7 and 9 dpi, respectively). Thiolation probably occurred in the large intestine but was inhibited by precipitation of sulphide as ferrous sulphide. Fe alone may have inhibited caeruloplasmin synthesis during the acute phase response to infection, which impacts thiomolybdate metabolism.

Introduction: Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is a rare entity characterized by cysts or air bubbles in the intestinal wall, usually asymptomatic. Its uncomplicated forms are managed conservatively, and the severe ones require surgical intervention. The presence of pneumoperitoneum is a disturbing radiological finding but not an indicator of surgical intervention. Clinical case: A 23-year-old man presented with weight loss, diarrhea, and rectal bleeding; a colonoscopy showed multiple violaceous cysts in the sigmoid and descending colon that collapsed after puncture and biopsies. Computed tomography (CT) confirmed the diagnosis and the presence of an encapsulated pneumoperitoneum. The absence of signs of potential lethality allowed conservative treatment with clinical remission during the first eight months of follow-up. Discussion: The pathophysiology of PCI is not well defined. Our patient's diagnosis was incidental when performing a colonoscopy for rectal bleeding. Asymptomatic encapsulated pneumoperitoneum should be interpreted as an important but not decisive sign of surgical intervention. Its presence, along with the medical history and physical, biochemical, endoscopic, and imaging examination, can prevent unnecessary surgery.


Introducción: la neumatosis quística intestinal es una entidad infrecuente, caracterizada por la presencia de quistes o burbujas de aire en la pared intestinal, usualmente asintomática. Sus formas no complicadas son manejadas conservadoramente y las graves requieren intervención quirúrgica. La presencia de neumoperitoneo es un hallazgo radiológico inquietante, pero no es indicador de intervención quirúrgica. Caso clínico: hombre de 23 años con pérdida de peso, diarrea y rectorragia, la colonoscopia mostró múltiples quistes violáceos localizados en el sigmoide y descendente que colapsaron tras la punción y biopsias, la tomografía axial computarizada (TAC) confirmó el diagnóstico y la presencia de un neumoperitoneo encapsulado. La ausencia de signos de potencial letalidad permitió un tratamiento conservador con remisión clínica durante los primeros 8 meses de seguimiento. Discusión: la fisiopatología de la neumatosis quística intestinal no está bien definida. En el paciente presentado el diagnóstico se realizó de forma incidental al realizar una colonoscopia por una rectorragia. El neumoperitoneo asintomático encapsulado debe interpretarse como un signo importante pero no determinante de intervención quirúrgica y su presencia junto con los antecedentes médicos, examen físico, bioquímico, endoscópico e imagenológico puede evitar cirugías innecesarias.

(1) Background: The gut microbiota might play a part in affecting athletic performance and is of considerable importance to athletes. The aim of this study was to search the recent knowledge of the protagonist played by high-intensity and high-duration aerobic exercise on gut microbiota composition in athletes and how these effects could provide disadvantages in sports performance. (2) Methods: This systematic review follows the PRISMA guidelines. An exhaustive bibliographic search in Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus was conducted considering the articles published in the last 5 years. The selected articles were categorized according to the type of study. The risk of bias was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute's Critical Appraisal Tool for Systematic Reviews. (3) Results: Thirteen studies had negative effects of aerobic exercise on intestinal microbiota such as an upsurge in I-FABP, intestinal distress, and changes in the gut microbiota, such as an increase in Prevotella, intestinal permeability and zonulin. In contrast, seven studies observed positive effects of endurance exercise, including an increase in the level of bacteria such as increased microbial diversity and increased intestinal metabolites. (4) Conclusions: A large part of the studies found reported adverse effects on the intestinal microbiota when performing endurance exercises. In studies carried out on athletes, more negative effects on the microbiota were found than in those carried out on non-athletic subjects.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Dysbiosis of the gut microbiota is frequently found in cases of obesity and related metabolic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus. The composition of the microbiota in diabetics is similar to that of obese people, thereby causing increased energy uptake efficiency in the large intestine of obese people, maintenance of a systemic inflammatory state, and increased insulin resistance. Bariatric surgery seems to entail an improvement in gut dysbiosis, leading to an increased diversity of the gut microbiota. AIMS: This study aimed to present a literature review on obesity-associated gut dysbiosis and its status post-bariatric surgery. METHODS: A systematic review of primary studies was conducted in PubMed, SciELO, BIREME, LILACS, Embase, ScienceDirect, and Scopus databases using DeCS (Health Science Descriptors) with the terms "obesity," "intestinal dysbiosis," "bariatric surgery," and "microbiota." RESULTS: We analyzed 28 articles that had clinical studies or literature reviews as their main characteristics, of which 82% (n=23) corresponded to retrospective studies. The sample size of the studies ranged from 9 to 257 participants and/or fecal samples. The epidemiological profile showed a higher prevalence of obesity in females, ranging from 24.4 to 35.1%, with a mean age of around 25-40 years. There was a variation regarding the type of bariatric surgery, migrating between the Roux-en-Y bypass, adjustable gastric banding, and vertical gastrectomy. Of the 28 studies, 6 of them evaluated the gut microbiota of obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery and their relationship with type 2 diabetes mellitus/glucose metabolism/insulin resistance. CONCLUSIONS: The intestinal microbiota is an important influencer in the regulation of the digestive tract, and obese individuals with comorbidities (diabetes mellitus, hypercholesterolemia, and metabolic syndrome) present important alterations, with an unbalance normal state, generating dysbiosis and the proliferation of bacterial species that favor the appearance of new diseases. Patients who undergo bariatric surgery present an improvement in the intestinal microbiota imbalance as well as reversibility of their comorbidities, increasing their life expectancy.


RESUMO RACIONAL: A disbiose da microbiota intestinal é encontrada frequentemente em casos de obesidade e doenças metabólicas relacionadas, como a diabetes mellitus tipo 2. A composição da microbiota em diabéticos é semelhante à de obesos, causando um aumento da eficiência de captação de energia no intestino grosso de obesos, manutenção de um estado inflamatório sistêmico e maior resistência à insulina. A cirurgia bariátrica parece acarretar em uma melhora da disbiose intestinal, levando ao aumento de diversidade da microbiota intestinal. OBJETIVOS: Este artigo apresenta uma revisão de literatura sobre a disbiose intestinal associada a obesidade e seu status pós cirurgia bariátrica. MÉTODOS: Uma revisão sistemática de estudos primários foi realizada em bases de dados PubMed, SciELO, BIREME, LILACS, Embase, ScienceDirect e Scopus utilizando o Descritores em Ciência da Saúde (DeCS) com os termos: "obesidade", "disbiose intestinal", "cirurgia bariátrica" e "microbiota". RESULTADOS: Foram analisados 28 artigos que tinham como característica principal serem estudos clínicos ou revisões de literatura, dos quais 82%, n=23, correspondem a estudos retrospectivos. O tamanho das amostras dos estudos variou de 9 a 257 participantes e/ou amostras fecais. O perfil epidemiológico mostrou haver maior prevalência de obesidade no sexo feminino, variação de 24,4 a 35,1%, com idade média em torno dos 25 a 40 anos. Houve uma variação com relação ao tipo de cirurgia bariátrica, migrando entre a Bypass em Y-de-Roux, Banda gástrica ajustável e gastrectomia vertical. Dos 28 estudos, 6 deles avaliaram a microbiota intestinal de obesos submetidos à cirurgia bariátrica e sua relação com diabetes mellitus tipo 2/metabolismo da glicose/resistência insulínica. CONCLUSÕES: A microbiota intestinal é um importante influenciador na regulação do aparelho digestivo, e que indivíduos obesos com comorbidades (diabetes mellitus, hipercolesterolemia e síndrome metabólica) apresentam alterações importantes, com desequilíbrio do seu estado normal, gerando disbiose e a proliferação de espécies bacterianas que favorecem o aparecimento de novas doenças. Pacientes submetidos a cirurgia bariátrica apresentam melhora do desequilíbrio da microbiota intestinal, bem como uma reversibilidade de suas comorbidades, elevando a expectativa de vida.

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii infection causes intestinal inflammation and diarrhea indicating possible intestinal motor dysfunction. Anatomical studies have shown alterations in the colonic myenteric plexus, but it is unknown whether this impacts motility and therefore whether motility is a target for treatment. We determined whether colonic coordinated movements are compromised by toxoplasmic infection and how it is associated with anatomical changes. METHODS: Male Wistar rats were evaluated at 6, 12, 24, 48, and 72 hours and 30 days postinfection (dpi) and controls. Infected rats received orally 5 × 103 sporulated oocysts of strain ME-49 (genotype II) of T gondii. The colon was collected for anatomical analysis (including the myenteric plexus immunolabeled with HuC/D, nNOS, and ChAT) and motility analysis in vitro (conventional manometry). Fecal output was measured daily. KEY RESULTS: At 12 hours postinfection, T gondii caused hypertrophy of the muscularis externa layer of the distal colon. There was loss of total, nitrergic, and cholinergic myenteric neurons in the proximal colon at 30 day postinfection (dpi); however, only loss of cholinergic neurons was found in the distal colon. Contractile complexes in the middle and distal colon were longer in duration in infected animals, which was associated with slower migration of the colonic motor complex. However, gastrointestinal transit time and fecal pellet output remained unchanged during the T gondii infection. CONCLUSIONS AND INFERENCES: Toxoplasma gondii caused myenteric neuronal loss in the proximal and distal colon and altered the motility pattern in the middle and distal colon to a more propulsive phenotype.

Colonoscopy is a minimally invasive technique used to assess the large intestine through direct inspection of the intestinal mucosa. When associated with histopathological examination of fragments collected from the intestine, the definitive diagnosis can be obtained. This retrospective study evaluated colonoscopy and histopathological exams of the large intestine and ileum of dogs with gastrointestinal disorders admitted at the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) and the Veterinary Hospital São Francisco de Assis to determine the frequency of injuries, their distribution in the intestinal segments, and the relationship of the findings observed in these two analyzes. The colonoscopy and histopathological findings of the case series were described using absolute and relative frequencies, as well as nature and intensity classification of the findings. Cohen's Kappa coefficient was obtained to assess the concordance of nature and intensity classifications between colonoscopy and histopathology, and its 95% confidence interval constructed. The analyses were performed using the Software SAS University Edition. It was observed a moderate agreement between the classification of the nature of the findings by endoscopy and histopathology (Kappa coefficient = 0.39, CI = 0.20-0.59). This can also be observed when assessing the frequency of similar diagnoses between the methods, since only 39 (72.22%) were consistent, i.e., 15 (22.78%) diagnoses differed depending on the nature of the finding, which could have a great influence on the final diagnosis if histopathology was disregarded. For the intensity of the injuries, little agreement was observed between the methods (Kappa coefficient = 0.1243, C = -0.05-0.30). This was even more evident in the frequency of similar diagnoses in terms of intensity, of which 20 (37.04%) were similar and 34 (62.96%) were different. Inflammatory affections are the most frequently observed alterations in the large intestine and ileum of dogs. The most common finding that reveals inflammatory changes is the lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate. As for the proliferative and neoplastic lesions, adenomatous polyps and lymphoma were common. The most affected sites of the large intestine were the descending colon and the rectum. Findings such as edema and reddening of the mucosa were frequent by macroscopy. Although the changes observed by colonoscopy and histopathology may not be similar, these techniques are complementary, which makes biopsies mandatory for a diagnostic conclusion.(AU)


A colonoscopia é uma técnica pouco invasiva utilizada para avaliação do intestino grosso por meio de inspeção direta da mucosa intestinal. Quando associada ao exame histopatológico, com a coleta de fragmentos do intestino, o diagnóstico definitivo pode ser obtido. O objetivo desse estudo retrospectivo foi associar os achados de exames de colonoscopia e histopatologia do intestino grosso e íleo em 54 cães com distúrbios gastrointestinais dos Hospitais Veterinários da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) e São Francisco de Assis. Na colonoscopia, as alterações mais frequentemente observadas foram edema, friabilidade e avermelhamento de mucosa. Quanto à distribuição de lesões por segmento intestinal, houve maior incidência de alterações inflamatórias, das quais foram as mais frequentes, com o infiltrado linfoplasmocitário sendo o mais comum em todos segmentos analisados (i.e. reto, cólon, ceco e íleo). O cólon ascendente e o reto foram os locais de alterações mais frequentes na colonoscopia e na histopatologia. Os pólipos hiperplásicos e o linfoma foram as lesões proliferativas de ocorrência mais comum. Houve baixa concordância entre as classificações por natureza e intensidade dos achados na colonoscopia e histopatologia. Assim, não foi possível associar alterações descritas nos exames histopatológicos quanto à natureza e intensidade das lesões utilizando a colonoscopia, o que leva à conclusão de que é essencial a realização de biópsias em todos os exames para conclusão diagnóstica.(AU)

O objetivo desse estudo retrospectivo foi associar os achados de exames de colonoscopia e histopatologia do intestino grosso e íleo em 54 cães com distúrbios gastrointestinais dos Hospitais Veterinários da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) e São Francisco de Assis. Na colonoscopia, as alterações mais frequentemente observadas foram edema, friabilidade e avermelhamento de mucosa. Quanto à distribuição de lesões por segmento intestinal, houve maior incidência de alterações inflamatórias, das quais foram as mais frequentes, com o infiltrado linfoplasmocitário sendo o mais comum em todos segmentos analisados (i.e. reto, cólon, ceco e íleo). O cólon ascendente e o reto foram os locais de alterações mais frequentes na colonoscopia e na histopatologia. Os pólipos hiperplásicos e o linfoma foram as lesões proliferativas de ocorrência mais comum. Houve baixa concordância entre as classificações por natureza e intensidade dos achados na colonoscopia e histopatologia. Assim, não foi possível associar alterações descritas nos exames histopatológicos quanto à natureza e intensidade das lesões utilizando a colonoscopia, o que leva à conclusão de que é essencial a realização de biópsias em todos os exames para conclusão diagnóstica.

Colonoscopy is a minimally invasive technique used to assess the large intestine through direct inspection of the intestinal mucosa. When associated with histopathological examination of fragments collected from the intestine, the definitive diagnosis can be obtained. This retrospective study evaluated colonoscopy and histopathological exams of the large intestine and ileum of dogs with gastrointestinal disorders admitted at the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) and the Veterinary Hospital São Francisco de Assis to determine the frequency of injuries, their distribution in the intestinal segments, and the relationship of the findings observed in these two analyzes. The colonoscopy and histopathological findings of the case series were described using absolute and relative frequencies, as well as nature and intensity classification of the findings. Cohen's Kappa coefficient was obtained to assess the concordance of nature and intensity classifications between colonoscopy and histopathology, and its 95% confidence interval constructed. The analyses were performed using the Software SAS University Edition. It was observed a moderate agreement between the classification of the nature of the findings by endoscopy and histopathology (Kappa coefficient = 0.39, CI = 0.20-0.59). This can also be observed when assessing the frequency of similar diagnoses between the methods, since only 39 (72.22%) were consistent, i.e., 15 (22.78%) diagnoses differed depending on the nature of the finding, which could have a great influence on the final diagnosis if histopathology was disregarded. For the intensity of the injuries, little agreement was observed between the methods (Kappa coefficient = 0.1243, C = -0.05-0.30). This was even more evident in the frequency of similar diagnoses in terms of intensity, of which 20 (37.04%) were similar and 34 (62.96%) were different. Inflammatory affections are the most frequently observed alterations in the large intestine and ileum of dogs. The most common finding that reveals inflammatory changes is the lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate. As for the proliferative and neoplastic lesions, adenomatous polyps and lymphoma were common. The most affected sites of the large intestine were the descending colon and the rectum. Findings such as edema and reddening of the mucosa were frequent by macroscopy. Although the changes observed by colonoscopy and histopathology may not be similar, these techniques are complementary, which makes biopsies mandatory for a diagnostic conclusion.(AU)

Goat milk and goat milk and inulin were used as encapsulating agents of Bifidobacterium BB-12 and applied in Frozen Yogurt (GF2 and GF3, respectively) in order to evaluate the antagonistic effect against Escherichia coli. GF1 is a control containing only Escherichia coli. Simulation of gastrointestinal digestion occurred sequentially. Quantification of Bifidobacterium BB-12 was performed using plate counting while E. coli count was compared with quantification by qPCR with viable and nonviable cell differentiation. The Bifidobacterium BB-12 count was <1.0, 9.23 and 9.11 log CFU g-1 for GF1, GF2 and GF3, respectively. In the ascending colon, all samples showed E. coli counts of approximately 5 log CFU g-1 by plate counting and by qPCR. Throughout the transverse (24 h) and descending colon (48 h) samples GF2 and GF3 showed decrease in E. coli number. GF3 showed higher decrease of E. coli in the descending colon because of inulin bifidogenic characteristic. The production of organic acids by bifidobacteria was directly related to the decrease in the E. coli count. In plate counts, E. coli was not detected for the GF3 sample in the descending colon. However, when quantified by qPCR the sample presented amplification that corresponded to 3 log CFU g-1. In this way, it was possible to observe the phenomenon of the viable but not-culturable cells of E. coli. Finally, it is recommended the microcapsule produced with goat milk and the inulin for application in goat milk products, due to the better antagonist effect against E. coli.

Introducción. La colonoscopia es una exploración visual de la mucosa del colon, la cual consiste en la introducción de una sonda óptica flexible por el ano. Dentro de sus objetivos está la localización de lesiones de una manera muy precisa, obtener biopsias para su análisis al microscopio, realizar diversos procedimientos terapéuticos o diagnosticar lesiones pequeñas no detectables por métodos imagenológicos tradicionales. El objetivo del presente artículo es describir los hallazgos colonoscópicos en pacientes adultos de una institución prestadora de servicios de salud. Metodología. Estudio observacional, transversal con componente analítico, la información se recolectó de manera retrospectiva, en pacientes mayores de 18 años en ambos sexos, a los cuales se les realizó colonoscopia en una institución prestadora de servicios de salud de segundo nivel. Resultados. Se practicaron 521 procedimientos colonoscópicos en 291 mujeres y 230 hombres con mediana de edad de 63 años (rango 18-99), la proporción fue bastante superior en las personas mayores de 50 años, la frecuencia del procedimiento en mujeres fue superior con un 57.0% vs. el 43% de los hombres. El número de colonoscopias con resultado normal, fue más frecuente en las personas menores de 50 años (54.8%) contra 45.2% del total de los de 50 años en adelante. Conclusiones. La colonoscopia es un instrumento de gran utilidad al momento de diagnóstico, seguimiento y tratamiento de una gran variedad de patologías gastrointestinales, ya que, a través de esta importante herramienta diagnóstica es posible determinar y descartar otro tipo de patologías que afectan el sistema gastrointestinal. Introduction. Colonoscopy is a visual exploration of the colonic mucosa, which consists of the insertion of a flexible optic catheter through the anus. Its objectives include to locate lesions very precisely, to obtain biopsies for their microscopic analysis, to carry out different therapeutic procedures and to diagnose small lesions that cannot be detected by traditional imaging techniques. The aim of this article is to describe the colonoscopy findings in adult patients of a health care institution. Methodology. Observational, cross-sectional study with an analytical component. The information was collected retrospectively from patients aged over 18 years, of both sexes, on which a colonoscopy was performed in a secondary health care institution. Results. A total of 521 colonoscopy procedures were conducted on 291 women and 230 men with an average age of 63 years (age range: 18-99 years). The proportion was greater among people aged over 50 years. The frequency of the procedure in women was higher with 57.0%, compared to 43% in men. The number of colonoscopies with a normal result was more frequent in people aged under 50 years (54.8%) compared to 45.2% of the total of those aged 50 years and over. Conclusion. Colonoscopy is a very useful instrument when diagnosing, monitoring and treating a great variety of gastrointestinal pathologies, because through this important diagnostic tool, it is possible to determine the existence of or rule out other kinds of pathologies that affect the gastrointestinal system. Entre seus objetivos está a localização de lesões de maneira muito precisa, a obtenção de biópsias para análise ao microscópio, a realização de vários procedimentos terapêuticos ou o diagnóstico de pequenas lesões não detectáveis pelos métodos tradicionais de imagem. O objetivo deste artigo é descrever os achados de colonoscopia em pacientes adultos de uma instituição prestadora de serviços de saúde. Metodologia. Em estudo observacional, transversal, com componente analítico, as informações foram coletadas retrospectivamente em pacientes acima de 18 anos de ambos os sexos, submetidos à colonoscopia em instituição prestadora de serviços de saúde de segundo nível. Resultados. Foram realizados 521 procedimentos de colonoscopia em 291 mulheres e 230 homens com mediana de idade de 63 anos (variação de 18 a 99), a proporção foi muito maior em pessoas acima de 50 anos, a frequência do procedimento em mulheres foi maior em 57% vs. 43% nos homens. O número de colonoscopias com resultado normal foi mais frequente em pessoas com menos de 50 anos (54.8%) versus 45.2% do total das pessoas com 50 anos ou mais. Conclusão. A colonoscopia é um instrumento muito útil no diagnóstico, monitoramento e tratamento de uma ampla variedade de patologias gastrointestinais, pois, por meio desta importante ferramenta de diagnóstico, é possível determinar e descartar outros tipos de patologias que afetam o sistema gastrointestinal. Los lipomas del colon ocupan el tercer lugar en frecuencia de aparición de tumores benignos. Estos tumores están formados por tejido adiposo bien diferenciado con un estroma fibroso. La gran mayoría de estos lipomas es asintomática, algunos en raras ocasiones presentan complicaciones de urgencia. El fin de esta publicación es presentar un caso de obstrucción de colon por lipoma. Benign colonic lesions are infrequent and account for a low percentage of all colonic tumors. Among the benign tumors, lipomas are third in frequency. They are composed of mature adipose tissue with fibrous stroma. Most of them are asymptomatic but in rare instances, they may present as surgical emergencies. We present one case of colonic obstruction caused by lipomas. (AU)

Vitamin E and caloric restriction have antioxidant effects in mammals. The aim of this study was to evaluate effects of vitamin E supplementation and caloric restriction upon insulin secretion and glucose homeostasis in rats. Male Wistar rats were distributed among the following groups: C, control group fed ad libitum; R, food quantity reduction of 40%; CV, control group supplemented with vitamin E [30 mg·kg-1·day-1]; and RV, food-restricted group supplemented with vitamin E. The experiments ran for 21 days. Glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity was higher in the CV, R, and RV groups. Insulin secretion stimulated with different glucose concentrations was lower in the R and RV groups, compared with C and CV. In the presence of glucose and secretagogues, insulin secretion was higher in the CV group and was lower in the R and RV groups. An increase in insulin receptor occurred in the fat pad and muscle tissue of groups CV, R, and RV. Levels of hepatic insulin receptor and phospho-Akt protein were higher in groups R and RV, compared with C and CV, while muscle phospho-Akt was increased in the CV group. There was a reduction in hepatic RNA levels of the hepatocyte growth factor gene and insulin degrading enzyme in the R group, and increased levels of insulin degrading enzyme in the CV and RV groups. Thus, vitamin E supplementation and caloric restriction modulate insulin secretion by different mechanisms to maintain glucose homeostasis.

This specie has the greatest occurrence in Brazilian Northeast, making it a biological model for several researches in the fields as anatomy, physiology, genetics, pathology, histology and ecology, which provide data to literature in order to benefit maintenance and preservation of these animals. This study aimed to describe unpublished data about small and large intestine anatomy of the sloth Bradypus variegatus, in order to collaborate for knowledge of its digestive processes.Materials, Methods & Results: In order to perform this present research, 10 corpses of specie Bradypus variegatus belonged to the acquis of Anatomy Division, Department of Animal Morphology and Physiology (DMFA); Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE), with 5 males and 5 females, the study was authorized by Animal Use and Experimentation Ethic Committee license (CEUA-UFRPE), nº 034/2015. All 10 animals used had natural death, were obtained through a donation of CETAS Tangará (Centro de Triagem de Animais Silvestres - Wildlife Screening Center), and located in the city of Recife. Animals were dissected at abdominal and pelvic portion, from a median sagittal incision, followed by lateral folding of skin, muscle and withdrawal of pubis portion for exposition and description of intestines, with analysis of syntopy and measurement of these organs. A relation was observed among external holes of urinary, reproductive and digestive systems. A relation was still observed among intestines and stomach, liver, kidneys, bladder and abdominal cavity wall. Some animals had absence of sigmoid colon, ventral and dorsal descendent colon.[...]

This study investigated the relationship between enteroendocrine and mucus-secreting cells distribution, the severity of colonic mucosal injury and intestinal motility in experimental colorectal carcinogenesis. Using a standardized murine model of colorectal carcinogenesis, eight-weeks-old female Wistar rats weighting 147.30 ± 29.15g were randomized into two groups receiving a subcutaneous injection of 0.9% saline (control) or the chemical carcinogen 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH) at 20 mg/kg per week during 10 weeks. Aberrant crypt foci (ACF) were more frequent in DMH group compared to control group (P < 0.001). The number of enteroendocrine and mucus-secreting cells, and intestinal motility was reduced in DMH animals (P < 0.05). The distribution of enteric neurons was similar in both groups. In DMH animals there was a direct correlation between colonic motility and distribution of enteroendocrine (R(2) = 0.68, P < 0.05) and mucus-secreting cells (R(2) = 0.77, P < 0.05). Inverse correlation between the number of ACF, mucus-secreting cells (R(2) = -0.57, P < 0.05), and enteroendocrine cells (R(2) = -0.74, P < 0.05) was also observed. There was inverse correlation between the severity of the mucosal lesion, the number of mucus-secreting cells (R(2) = -0.83, P < 0.05) and enteroendocrine cells (R(2) = -0.96, P < 0.05). There was a direct correlation between nucleolar organizer regions (AgNOR) and ACF number (R(2) = 0.62; P < 0.01). Inverse correlation was also found between AgNOR, the number of mucus-secreting cells (R(2) = -0.76; P < 0.001), and enteroendocrine cells (R(2) = -0.86; P < 0.001). Taken together, the results indicated that colonic malignant transformation is related to depletion of mucus-secreting and enteroendocrine cells, which was a useful indicator of the evolutionary status of intestinal neoplasm, partially explaining the intestinal motility disorders in the early stages of colorectal carcinogenesis.

In animals and humans, intestinal muscular hypertrophy has only been observed in the small intestine, and this appears to be the first report of the disease affecting the large intestine. A rare case of primary muscle hypertrophy of the colon was found during the necropsy of a male, 3-year-old, mixed breed cat that died due to poisoning by carbamate. The necropsy revealed that the entire colon had marked circumferential thickening with narrowing of the lumen. Microscopically, diffuse intense smooth muscle hypertrophy was observed, especially of the inner circular muscle layer and muscularis mucosa. Those finds were associated with moderate multifocal to coalescing lymphocytic inflammatory infiltrate. Smooth muscle fibers of the large and small intestine showed no CDC47 expression and the percentage of nuclei in the muscle layers was similar between the colon and the duodenum. Based on macroscopic, microscopic and immunohistochemical findings, the diagnosis of diffuse primary muscle hypertrophy of the colon was confirmed.
