RESUMO
Visual illusions have long been used as tools to investigate sensory-perceptual deficits in schizophrenia. Recent conflicting accounts have called into question the assumption of abnormal illusion perception in patients and, therefore, the validity of this approach. Here, we present a systematic review of the current evidence regarding visual illusion perception abnormalities in patients with schizophrenia. Relevant publications were identified by a systematic search of PubMed, Literatura LILACS, PsycINFO, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), IBECS, BIOSIS, and Web of Science. Forty-five studies were selected which included illusions classified as 'Motion illusions', 'Geometric-optical illusions', 'Illusory contours', 'Depth inversion illusion', and 'Non-specific'. There is concordant evidence of abnormal processing of illusions in patients for most categories, especially in facial Depth Inversion and Müller-Lyer illusions. There were significant methodological disparities and shortcomings, but risk of bias was overall low for individual studies. The usefulness of visual illusions as tools in clinical settings as well as in basic research may be contingent on significant methodological refinements.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder worldwide. The symptoms of PD are characterized not only by motor alterations but also by a spectrum of nonmotor symptoms. Some of these are psychiatric manifestations such as sleep disorders; depression; cognitive difficulties that can evolve into dementia; and symptoms of psychosis, which include hallucinations, illusions, and delusions. Parkinson's disease psychosis (PDP) occurs in 18-50% of patients with PD. Treating PDP is challenging because antipsychotic drugs tend to be inefficient or may even worsen the disease's motor symptoms. OBJECTIVE: This review aims to summarize the current understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in PDP and recent innovative alternatives for its treatment. METHODS: This is a narrative review in which an extensive literature search was performed on the Scopus, EMBASE, PubMed, ISI Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases from inception to August 2021. The terms "Parkinson's disease psychosis", "Parkinson psychosis," "neurodegenerative psychosis", and "dopamine psychosis" were among the keywords used in the search. RESULTS: Recently, views on the etiology of hallucinations and illusions have evolved remarkably. PDP has been cemented as a multifactorial entity dependent on extrinsic and novel intrinsic mechanisms, including genetic factors, neurostructural alterations, functional disruptions, visual processing disturbances, and sleep disorders. Consequently, innovative pharmacological and biological treatments have been proposed. Pimavanserin, a selective 5-HT2A inverse agonist, stands out after its approval to treat PDP-associated hallucinations and illusions. CONCLUSION: Future results from upcoming clinical trials should further characterize the role of this drug in the management of PDP as well as other treatment options with novel mechanisms of action, such as saracatinib, SEP-363856, cannabidiol, electroconvulsive therapy, and transcranial magnetic stimulation.

Restaurant workers, whether aware of this or not, may be responsible for spreading Foodborne Diseases (FBD) to consumers. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate how the knowledge of the risk of FBD can become a gateway to risk perception and cognitive illusions, and how the habitus acts in guiding work practices. The research uses a mixed-methods design with qualitative approach. A study was conducted in six food services during 42â¯days, which had participatory observation as central method. A Risk Perception Scale and a Locus of Control Questionnaire were applied, helping to obtain data relative to cognitive illusions. It was identified that in the absence of food safety knowledge, risk was not identified by the workers and the action was conditioned by the habitus or by the constructions of common sense, while in the presence of knowledge, although shallow, risk was perceived and cognitive illusions emerged. A relationship between the many years of work, inefficient training and the protection granted by objects in the presence of cognitive illusions is discussed. Workers who do not possess scientific knowledge need to go through consistent training that, beyond biological and hygiene-related content, encompass concepts interwoven with risk perception and the habitus.

Abstract The efficacy of whitening toothpastes is questionable and controversial. Clinicians, patients and researchers have expressed concern with whitening toothpastes due to the risk of wearing the dental structure and the potential for disappointment if the advertised cosmetic results are not achieved. Objective: This study compared the whitening performance of toothpastes with different whitening technologies after initial and continued use. Material and Methods: Ninety bovine incisors were stained using a concentrated solution of black tea. They were randomly distributed into 6 groups, according to the toothpaste whitening technology: activated charcoal (B&W), blue covarine (WAD), hydrogen peroxide (LWA), microbeads (Oral B 3D White Perfection - 3DW) and optimized abrasives (XW4D). They were compared to a traditional toothpaste without a whitening agent (TA - control). Specimens underwent a brushing machine with controlled pressure, time and temperature. A calibrated examiner measured the color using a VITA-Classical scale before the first brushing cycle (T0), after the first brushing cycle (TI), and after a brushing cycle that simulates continuous use (TCU). Whitening performance was evaluated by the difference of shades (ΔSGU) between T0-TI and T0-TCU timepoints, using the Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn's non-parametric test. The Wilcoxon test was used to evaluate the cumulative effect (α=0.05). Results: Statistically significant differences were observed between toothpastes in both TI and TCU (p<0.05). The time of use also had a significant effect (p<0.05). Conclusion: Only WAD and 3DW showed whitening performance after the first use (TI). The greatest whitening performance after continuous use was obtained by WAD, followed by LWA and 3DW. The use of conventional toothpaste (TA) promotes no tooth whitening. Clinical relevance: Microbead abrasives (3DW) and blue covarine (WAD) were the active technology tested that presented the best global tooth whitening performance.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess how details on dental restorative composites with different radio-opacities are perceived under the influence of ambient light. METHODS: Resin composite step wedges (six steps, each 1-mm thick) were custom manufactured from three materials, respectively: (M1) Filtek™ Z350 (3M/ESPE, Saint Paul, MN); (M2) Prisma AP.H™ (Dentsply International Inc., Brazil) and (M3) Glacier(®) (SDI Limited, Victoria, Australia). Each step of the manufactured wedge received three standardized drillings of different diameters and depths. An aluminium (Al) step wedge with 12 steps (1-mm thick) was used as an internal standard to calculate the radio-opacity as pixel intensity values. Standardized digital images of the set were obtained, and 11 observers independently recorded the images, noting the number of noticeable details (drillings) under 2 dissimilar conditions: in a light environment (light was turned on in the room) and in low-light conditions (light in the room was turned off). The differences between images in terms of the number of details that were observed were statistically compared using ANOVA, Cronbach's alpha coefficient and Wilcoxon and Kruskal-Wallis tests, with a significance level setting of 5% (α = 0.05). RESULTS: The M2 showed higher radio-opacity, the M1 displayed intermediate radio-opacity and the M3 showed lower radio-opacity, respectively; however, all three were without significance (p > 0.05) compared with each other. The differences in radio-opacity resulted in a significant variation (p < 0.05) in the number of noticeable details in the image, which were influenced by characteristics of details, in addition to the ambient-light level. CONCLUSIONS: The radio-opacity of materials and ambient light can affect the perception of details in digital radiographic images.

Objetive: To measure the internal consistency and formulate the factorial analysis of Beck's Hopelessness Scale inpostpartum adolescents. Method: An observational, analytic, transversal study was conducted. Between January and May 2010, we applied a survey in every postpartum adolescent attended at Instituto Nacional Materno Perinatal. The internal consistency was evaluated by Cronbach's alpha coefficient and the factorial structure by the main components extractionand varimax rotation. Results: Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.70. The factorial structure showed 6 components, which doesn't correlates with other studies' findings. After eliminating 6 elements from Beck's Hopelessness Scale, we got a Cronbach alpha coefficient of 0.733 and a factorial structure with 4 components, identified as Motivation, Projection, Perceived Control and Illusion, explaining 55% of variance. Conclusion: We concluded that the modified Beck's Hopelessness Scale has an adequate internal consistency and factorial structure.

Among these advantages, the study highlights the possibility of researching these relationships in different levels of analysis, not only at the individual level, focusing on cultural level, this paper presents Cultural Materialism as an anthropological proposal for the consideration of these phenomena on the cultural level and based on adaptive principles, besides it discusses the experimental analysis of cultural practices and points out how they can help to understand how people in groups behave such as they are being effective in the control of the surrounding environment (when, sometimes, in fact, they are not). The paper offers an integrative proposal which makes easier behavior analysts' dialogue with social psychologists and offers some routes from cultural analysis of illusions and beliefs.
OBJECTIVE: Describe the development of an instrument to identify records of their stay at the intensive care unit, and verify content validation and the applicability of the instrument. METHOD: It is a methodological study, based in Pasquali's (1998) psychological scale elaboration theory. To elaborate the instrument, three stages were followed: the built of items; appearance and content validation analysis performed by a panel of experts; together with implementation of a pilot study to validation instrument applicability in the targeted population. RESULTS: There was little unconformity among the experts when analyzing the questions according to the domain of the constructor. The items were positively evaluated having a punctuation value above 80 percent, which abides the instrument validation criteria. Thus, the items were considered consistent in relation to the domain and constructor allowing identification of recollection of memories lived by the patients during their stay at the ICU. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed items demonstrated to be comprehensive, clear, and having an adequate presentation structure. The instrument shows validation to the content certified by a panel of experts, thus demonstrating to have theoretical characteristics to identify short and long term recollections of ICU patients.

Parapsychology is the scientific study of certain types of paranormal phenomena. The paranormal (beside or beyond the normal) refers to unusual experiences that do not seem to be explainable in terms of our everyday understanding or known scientific principles. The scientificreality of parapsychological phenomena and the validity of scientific parapsychological research is amatter of frequent dispute and criticism. The field is regarded by some critics as a pseudoscience. Palinopsia is a rare symptom characterized by the illusory phenomenon of perseverance or recurrence of visual images after removal of the exciting stimulus. It is a distortion of the processing in the visual system caused by unilateral o bilateral lesions of various kinds, such as toxicity or side effects of drugs, as well as an array of miscellaneous conditions, that affect posterior areas of the cerebral hemispheres in normal subjects. Despite its rarity, there is abundance of literature on the subject, possibly because of the intriguing, quasiparapsychologic nature of the symptom. Six patients were identified with the diagnosis of palinopsia o poliopsia of whom two were taking the drug tamoxifen not previously described in the literature
