RESUMO

Macrolobium paulobocae is presented as a new species of the legume subfamily Detarioideae. It is restricted to seasonally flooded igapó forests in the Central Amazon. We provide a description, illustration, photographs, and a distribution map of the new species, as well as a table of comparative morphology with similar, likely phylogenetically related species. The epithet is in honor of Paulo Apóstolo Costa Lima Assunção, or Paulo Boca, a great Amazonian botanist, victim of COVID-19 in January 2021.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Identifying the processes that generate and maintain biodiversity requires understanding of how evolutionary processes interact with abiotic conditions to structure communities. Edaphic gradients are strongly associated with floristic patterns but, compared with climatic gradients, have received relatively little attention. We asked (1) How does the phylogenetic composition of palm communities vary along edaphic gradients within major habitat types? and (2) To what extent are phylogenetic patterns determined by (a) habitat specialists, (b) small versus large palms, and (c) hyperdiverse genera? METHODS: We paired data on palm community composition from 501 transects of 0.25 ha located in two main habitat types (non-inundated uplands and seasonally inundated floodplains) in western Amazonian rain forests with information on soil chemistry, climate, phylogeny and metrics of plant size. We focused on exchangeable base concentration (cmol+ kg-1) as a metric of soil fertility and a floristic index of inundation intensity. We used a null model approach to quantify the standard effect size of mean phylogenetic distance for each transect (a metric of phylogenetic community composition) and related this value to edaphic variables using generalized linear mixed models, including a term for spatial autocorrelation. KEY RESULTS: Overall, we recorded 112 008 individuals belonging to 110 species. Palm communities in non-inundated upland transects (but not floodplain transects) were more phylogenetically clustered in areas of low soil fertility, measured as exchangeable base concentration. In contrast, floodplain transects with more severe flood regimes (as inferred from floristic structure) tended to be phylogenetically clustered. Nearly half of the species recorded (44 %) were upland specialists while 18 % were floodplain specialists. In both habitat types, phylogenetic clustering was largely due to the co-occurrence of small-sized habitat specialists belonging to two hyperdiverse genera (Bactris and Geonoma). CONCLUSIONS: Edaphic conditions are associated with the phylogenetic community structure of palms across western Amazonia, and different factors (specifically, soil fertility and inundation intensity) appear to underlie diversity patterns in non-inundated upland versus floodplain habitats. By linking edaphic gradients with palm community phylogenetic structure, our study reinforces the need to integrate edaphic conditions in eco-evolutionary studies in order to better understand the processes that generate and maintain tropical forest diversity. Our results suggest a role for edaphic niche conservatism in the evolution and distribution of Amazonian palms, a finding with potential relevance for other clades.

The phylogenetic community assembly approach has been used to elucidate the role of ecological and historical processes in shaping tropical tree communities. Recent studies have shown that stressful environments, such as seasonally dry, white-sand and flooded forests tend to be phylogenetically clustered, arguing for niche conservatism as the main driver for this pattern. Very few studies have attempted to identify the lineages that contribute to such assembly patterns. We aimed to improve our understanding of the assembly of flooded forest tree communities in Northern South America by asking the following questions: are seasonally flooded forests phylogenetically clustered? If so, which angiosperm lineages are over-represented in seasonally flooded forests? To assess our hypotheses, we investigated seasonally flooded and terra firme forests from the Magdalena, Orinoco and Amazon Basins, in Colombia. Our results show that, regardless of the river basin in which they are located, seasonally flooded forests of Northern South America tend to be phylogenetically clustered, which means that the more abundant taxa in these forests are more closely related to each other than expected by chance. Based on our alpha and beta phylodiversity analyses we interpret that eudicots are more likely to adapt to extreme environments such as seasonally flooded forests, which indicates the importance of environmental filtering in the assembly of the Neotropical flora.

Isotopic variation within food sources adds uncertainty to models intended to reconstruct trophic pathways. Understanding this variation is pivotal for planning sampling protocols for food-web research. This study investigates natural variation in C and N stable isotopes among plant species in two western Amazon flooded forests with contrasting watershed biogeochemistry (white-water várzea-forest and black-water igapó-forest). Our objectives were to compare δ13C and δ15N of leaves and fruits between sites; assess the magnitude of within-site variation in δ13C and δ15N of leaves (várzea: 28 spp., igapó: 10 spp.) and fruits (várzea: 22 spp., igapó: 22 spp.); determine within-plant variation in δ13C and δ15N of leaf, wood and fruit tissues; and test whether inter-specific variation in δ13C and δ15N influence the results of a mixing model predicting the contribution of terrestrial C sources to an aquatic consumer. Mean δ13C values of leaves and fruits were not statistically different between the two sites despite regional differences in biogeochemistry and floristic composition. In contrast, mean δ15N of leaves and fruits were significantly lower at the várzea than at the igapó site. The high floristic diversity of both forests was reflected in large within-site interspecific variation in both δ13C and δ15N. Paired comparisons revealed that δ13C of wood and fruits and δ15N of fruits were generally greater than values obtained for leaves from the same plant. The predicted contribution of different carbon sources to the consumer biomass changed between models as a function of source variability. We discuss implications of source variation for designing sampling protocols, interpreting isotopic signatures, and establishing trophic links between plants and consumers. Our findings highlight the importance of in situ sampling to establish reliable primary production baselines for local food webs.


La variación isotópica dentro de fuentes alimenticias aãade incertidumbre a los modelos destinados a reconstruir redes tróficas. La comprensión de esta variación es fundamental para la planificación de protocolos de muestreo para la investigación de redes alimentarias. Este estudio investiga la variación natural en isótopos estables de C y N entre especies de plantas en dos bosques inundables de la Amazonía noroccidental con biogeoquímica de cuenca contrastantes (várzea-bosques de aguas blanca e igapó-bosques de aguas negras). Nuestros objetivos fueron comparar las seãales isotópicas de δ13C y δ15N de hojas y frutos entre bosques; evaluar la magnitud de la variación en la composición isotópica de hojas (várzea: 28 spp., Igapó: 10 spp.) y frutas (várzea:. 22 spp, igapó: 22 spp.) a nivel local; determinar la variación en la composición isotópica de madera, hojas y frutas dentro de una planta; y evaluar si la variación inter-específica en los valores de δ13C y δ15N ejerce influencia sobre los resultados de modelos que predicen la contribución de fuentes de alimentos terrestres a un consumidor acuático. Los valores promedio de δ13C en hojas y frutos no fueron estadísticamente diferentes entre los dos tipos de bosque a pesar de las diferencias regionales en biogeoquímica y composición florística. Por el contrario, los valores promedio de δ15N en hojas y frutos fueron significativamente más bajos en la várzea que en el igapó. La alta diversidad florística de los dos bosques se reflejó en una gran variación inter-específica a nivel local en δ13C y δ15N. Comparaciones pareadas revelaron que los valores de δ13C de madera y frutas y δ15N de frutas fueron generalmente mayores que los valores obtenidos para las hojas de la misma planta. Los resultados sobre la contribución de diferentes fuentes de carbono a la biomasa del consumidor cambió de un modelo a otro en función a la variabilidad isotópica en las fuentes alimenticias. Discutimos las implicaciones de la variación en las fuentes alimenticias para el diseão de los protocolos de muestreo, la interpretación de las seãales isotópicas, y el establecimiento de relaciones tróficas entre plantas y consumidores. Nuestros resultados destacan la importancia de la toma de muestras in situ para establecer líneas de base fiables de producción primaria para las redes tróficas locales.

Esse trabalho teve como objetivo a detecção e quantificação de coliformes totais e Escherichia coli, no Lago Igapó, com a finalidade de avaliar a qualidade destas águas como próprias ou impróprias para recreação, além da caracterização genotípica de fatores de virulência associados a EPEC e STEC pela técnica da PCR. A área de estudo foi o Lago Igapó I, II, III e IV. As coletas foram realizadas mensalmente entre março de 2011 a fevereiro de 2012. A técnica utilizada para detecção e quantificação de Coliformes Totais e E. coli foi a do substrato cromogênico Colilert. Na PCR os genes eae e bfp foram pesquisados para caracterizar o patotipo de EPEC típica; stx1, stx2, eae e hlyA o de STEC e as que apresentaram somente o gene eae foram caracterizadas como EPEC atípica. De acordo com a Resolução CONAMA 357/2005, foi observado que para a recreação de contato primário, apenas o Lago Igapó III foi classificado impróprio, já para recreação de contato secundário, todos os lagos apresentaram-se próprios. Além disso, pode ser observada uma forte relação entre o índice pluviométrico e os índices deE. coli no Lago Igapó, na qual em meses mais secos a sua quantidade decresce drasticamente, enquanto que em meses chuvosos se observava uma relação contrária. Das 97 cepas de E. coli isoladas, duas apresentaram o gene eae (EPEC atípica). Nenhum isolado apresentou os genes stx1, stx2, bfp e hlyA. Desse modo, esperamos conscientizar a população e os órgãos públicos da importância do monitoramento microbiológico das águas recreacionais para prevenção de surtos de infecções de veiculação hídrica.


This work aimed at the detection and quantification of total coliforms and Escherichia coli in IgapóLake, in order to evaluate the quality of these waters as proper or unfit for recreation, in addition to the genotypic characterization of virulence factors associated with EPEC and STEC by PCR. The study areawas the Igapó Lake I, II, III and IV. Samples were collected monthly from March 2011 to February 2012.The technique used for the detection and quantification of Total Coliforms and E. coli was the Colilert chromogenic substrate. In the technique of PCR, the eae and bfp genes were tested to characterize the typical EPEC pathotype; stx1, stx2, eae and hlyA the STEC pathotype and the samples that presented only the eae gene were characterized as atypical EPEC. According to CONAMA Resolution 357/2005, it has been observed that only Igapó Lake III was rated inappropriate for primary contact recreation, while for secondary contact recreation, all lakes were considered appropriate. Moreover, a strong relationship between rainfall and E. coli indices in Igapó Lake can be observed, which in dry months the quantity drastically decreases, while in rainy months the opposite relationship was observed. Of the 97 strains of E. coli isolated, two had the eae gene (atypical EPEC). None of the isolates contained genes stx1,stx2, bfp and hlyA. Thus, we hope to educate the population and public agencies of the importance of microbiological monitoring of recreational waters to prevent outbreaks of waterborne infections.

RESUMO

Badister (Badister) amazonussp. n. is described from Perú, Loreto, 1.0 km SW Boca del Rio Samiria, Vigilante Post 1, 130m, "04°40.5'S, 074°18.9'W" its type locality. It is known also from two other localities in Loreto Department, Perú, in both the Varzea and Igapó river systems. This new species is sufficiently different that a new informal higher taxon, the amazonus species complex, is recognized. An updated key to the Western Hemisphere species of subgenus Badister is provided.

The present study investigated the pollen grain morphology of ten floodplain plant species from Ilha da Marchantaria and Tarumã-Mirim located 20 Km from Manaus (AM). The species were collected from April to August 2000 and August 2001. The following species were described: Cassia leiandra Benth. (Caesalpiniaceae), Campsiandra comosa var. laurifolia (Benth.) Cowan (Caesalpiniaceae), Hevea spruceana (Benth) Müll. Arg. (Euphorbiaceae), Piranhea trifoliata Baill. (Euphorbiaceae), Laetia corymbulosa Spruce ex Benth. (Flacourtiaceae), Eschweilera tenuifolia (O. Berg) Miers (Lecythidaceae), Acacia polyphylla DC. (Mimosaceae), Inga micradenia Spruce ex Benth. (Mimosaceae), Simaba orinocensis Kunth (Simarubaceae), Vitex cymosa Bert. ex Spreng. (Verbenaceae). The pollen analysis established that these species presented pollen grains of a great variability of morphological characteristics.


Foi estudada a morfologia dos grãos de pólen de dez espécies de plantas de várzea e igapó provenientesda Ilha da Marchantaria e Tarumã-Mirim, localizadas a 20 Km da cidade de Manaus (AM), coletadas nos períodos de abril a agosto de 2000 e agosto de 2001. As espécies descritas foram Cassia leiandra Benth. (Caesalpiniaceae), Campsiandra comosa var. laurifolia (Benth.) Cowan (Caesalpiniaceae), Hevea spruceana (Benth.) Müll. Arg. (Euphorbiaceae), Piranhea trifoliata Baill. (Euphorbiaceae), Laetia corymbulosa Spruce ex Benth. (Flacourtiaceae), Eschweilera tenuifolia (O. Berg) Miers (Lecythidaceae), Acacia polyphylla DC. In order to verify the influence of flood-pulse dynamics on leaf phenology and concentrations of chlorophyll a, b and total, 15 individuals of two species typical of the black-water igapó forest, Eschweilera tenuifolia and Hevea spruceana, were studied in the lower course of the river Tarumã-Mirim, Amazonas, Brazil. Leaf phenology was followed weekly from July 1993 to Dezember 1994 and the chlorophyll content was measured in the laboratory every month. Variations in the chlorophyll contents were related to leaf age. Mean concentrations of total chlorophyll in mature and old leaves of E. tenuifolia were 473.5 and 288.6 mg m-2, and 418.5 and 199.0 mg m-2 in H. spruceana. The peak shedding and flush occurred during the aquatic phase.


Com o objetivo de verificar a influência da dinâmica do pulso de inundação na fenologia foliar e conteúdo de clorofilas a, b e total, 15 indivíduos adultos de duas espécies típicas das cotas mais baixas da floresta de igapó, Eschweilera tenuifolia e Hevea spruceana, foram estudados no baixo curso do rio Tarumã-Mirim, Amazonas, Brasil. A fenologia foliar foi acompanhada em observações semanais de campo de julho de 1993 a dezembro de 1994 e o conteúdo de clorofilas foi medido em laboratório, mensalmente. Mudanças no conteúdo de clorofilas relacionaram-se à idade da folha. As concentrações médias de clorofila total em folhas maduras e velhas de E. tenuifolia foram de 473,5 e 288,6 mg m-2, e em H. spruceana de 418,5 e 199,0 mg m-2. Na fase aquática deu-se o pico de abscisão e brotamento foliar.

The Jaú National Park is the largest protected forested area in the world. The Vitória Amazônica Foundation is working towards understanding its ecosystem, to which this paper contributes. Wood density was analysed in 27 common tree species growing in the blackwater flood-plains of the Rio Jaú, an affluent of the Rio Negro (Amazonia, Brazil). Wood was sampled with an increment borer. Mean wood density of the analysed species ranged from 0.35 to 0.87 g cm-3. The mean of all sampled species was 0.67 g cm-3 (st. dev. 0.13). Lowest density was found for Hevea spruceana with 0.32 g cm-3 and highest for Crudia amazonica with 0.9 g cm-3.


O Parque Nacional do Jaú é a maior área protegida do mundo completamente coberta por floresta. Este trabalho contribui para o conhecimento deste ecossistema, em colaboração com a Fundação Vitória Amazônica. A densidade da madeira de 27 espécies de árvores comuns nas áreas inundáveis do Rio Jaú, um afluente do Rio Negro, foi determinada com o método não destrutivo do trado. A densidade média das espécies analisadas variou entre 0.35 e 0.87 g cm-3. A média de todas as espécies foi de 0.67 g cm-3 (st. dev. 0.13). A menor densidade medida foi em Hevea spruceana com 0.32 g cm-3 e a maior em Crudia amazonica com 0.9 g cm-3.
