BACKGROUND: The coffee crop is prominent in Brazilian agriculture, making the country a global power in this area. One of the main concerns in the coffee sector is disease, which can affect coffee productivity and quality. Thus, it is important to evaluate the factors that may affect coffee quality and thus enhance the development of strategies to reduce coffee losses and costs and optimize production. This study evaluated the influence of the type of irrigation (self-propelled, drip, and center pivot) on the time until the occurrence of phoma leaf spot on Arabica coffee plants, considering the intensity of the disease. Additionally, the association between longitudinal incidence and the time until an event of interest was assessed based on the joint modeling of longitudinal and survival data. RESULTS: The results of this study identify the effectiveness of drip irrigation system compared with other systems; the use of such systems was associated with an ~46.5% reduction in the risk of leaf spot disease compared with the use of a self-propelled irrigation system. The use of a center pivot system increased the risk of disease progression compared with a self-propelled system. An association between the longitudinal and survival processes was also observed. CONCLUSION: The findings demonstrate the superior performance of the drip irrigation system in controlling phoma leaf spot disease in Arabica coffee plants compared with self-propelled and center pivot systems. This research highlights the potential of using drip irrigation to establish more effective agricultural practices in coffee cultivation, contributing to better disease management and improved crop quality. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.
RESUMO
PURPOSE: To assess whether health-related quality of life (HRQOL) improved through a postmastectomy care program focused on breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) protection/awareness. METHODS: Postoperative breast cancer patients were enrolled prospectively (February-2018 to September-2019) at Nursing and Obstetrics Faculty, Durango, Mexico. Sociodemographic/clinical characteristics, arm measurements, and HRQOL evaluation with Functional Assessment Cancer Therapy-Breast Cancer were collected at baseline and after six follow-up assessments between six-to-twelve-month postmastectomy. Lymphedema was verified through circometry. Descriptive analysis and McNemar-Bowker test were used to evaluate paired differences in HRQOL. Subgroup analysis was conducted to assess sociodemographic/clinical characteristics of BCRL using Pearson's chi-squared or Fisher exact test along with odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). All tests were two-sided with P-values < 0.05 considered statistically significant. RESULTS: One-hundred-two patients developed BCRL (incidence 66.2%, n = 154). All dimensions of HRQOL improved after the postmastectomy care program (P < 0.05). The subgroup analysis indicated that elementary academic degree (OR = 2.40, 95%CI: 1.01-5.69), laborer (OR = 9.85, 95%CI: 3.30-29.3), and total mastectomy (OR = 4.23, 95%CI: 1.20-14.9) were more associated with BCRL (P < 0.05). Conversely, high school academic degree (OR = 0.46, 95%CI: 0.22-0.94), married status (OR = 0.42, 95%CI: 0.21-0.86), housewife (OR = 0.27, 95%CI: 0.12-0.61), professional occupation (OR = 0.10, 95%CI: 0.01-0.64), and having no comorbidities (OR = 0.31, 95%CI: 0.15-0.63) were less associated with BCRL (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Although HRQOL improved through the postmastectomy care program, our findings suggest that lower education, working as a laborer, and total mastectomy may be more associated with BCRL. Continuing research may uncover liabilities among BCRL patients within limited-resources settings.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the occurrence of leprosy in Brazil and its states between 1990 and 2019, according to Global Burden of Disease (GBD) estimates, and its correlation with development status. STUDY DESIGN: A descriptive and analytical ecological epidemiological study. METHODS: Rates of incidence, prevalence, and years lived with disability (YLD) due to leprosy, standardized by age, per 100,000 inhabitants, were analyzed. The trend analysis consisted of the joinpoint regression model and the average annual percentage change. The correlation between the incidence rate and the sociodemographic index (SDI) was investigated (Spearman test) at a 5% significance level. Incidence, prevalence and YLD rates were presented by country's states, sex, and age. RESULTS: There was an average percentage decrease of -1.1% per year (P < 0.001) in the incidence rate in the country and, between 1990 and 2019, a decline from 4.8 to 3.5 per 100,000 inhabitants; prevalence from 26.1 to 22.2, and YLD from 1.1 to 1.0. The incidence rate was higher among men and the elderly. Maranhão (7.0 in 1990; 4.2 in 2019), Alagoas (6.6 in 1990; 4.1 in 2019), Acre (6.1 in 1990; 4.0 in 2019), Mato Grosso (5.2 in 1990 and 3.7 in 2019), and Mato Grosso do Sul (4.8 in 1990 and 3.7 in 2019) presented the highest incidence rates. A negative correlation was observed between SDI levels and leprosy incidence rates in 1990 (R = -0.71; P < 0.0001) and 2019 (R = -0.81; P < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: Despite the decrease in the rates of leprosy incidence, prevalence, and YLDs over the analyzed period, Brazil has a long way towards achieving its eradication. The greater burden of the disease in males stands out. The estimated risk of the disease was higher in the states with the lowest SDI levels. Therefore, interventions must consider the heterogeneity of the disease burden geographically and between sociodemographic groups.
RESUMO
OBJECTIVE: To assess the relationship between breastfeeding and the risk of developing nephrotic syndrome using a population-based nationwide birth cohort in Korea. STUDY DESIGN: This nationwide cohort study utilized data from the National Health Information Database and the National Health Screening Program for Infants and Children. The study included all children born between January 1, 2010, and December 31, 2018, who underwent their first health screening, which included a specific questionnaire on breastfeeding between 4 and 6 months of age. Associations between nephrotic syndrome and exclusive breastfeeding were estimated using adjusted hazard ratios (aHR) derived from Cox proportional hazards models, adjusted for sociodemographic variables, with follow-up until the occurrence of nephrotic syndrome, 8 years postindex date, death, or December 31, 2022, whichever was first. RESULTS: The study population comprised 1 787 774 children (median follow-up: 7.96 years; IQR: 6.31-8.00 years), including 612 556 exclusively breastfed and 1 175 218 formula-fed children. Exclusive breastfeeding was associated with a decreased risk of developing nephrotic syndrome (aHR: 0.80; 95% CI: 0.69-0.93). Subgroup analysis stratified by sex mirrored the overall findings, although statistical significance was not observed in girls (boys: aHR, 0.75; 95% CI, 0.62-0.92; girls: aHR, 0.87; 95% CI, 0.70-1.09). Sensitivity analysis confirmed these results. CONCLUSIONS: Exclusive breastfeeding was associated with a 20% reduced risk of developing nephrotic syndrome up to 8 years of age.
RESUMO
BACKGROUND: The use of peripherally inserted central venous catheters (PICCs) has increased worldwide in the last decade. However, PICCs are associated to catheter-related thrombosis (CRT) and central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs). We describe the characteristics of patients requiring a PICC, estimate the incidence rate, and identify potential risk factors of PICC-related complications. METHODS: All adult patients requiring a PICC at our institution (Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá, Bogota, Colombia) from September 2022 to May 2024 were included in the analysis. The database from active PICC monitoring collected demographic and PICC-related information. The incidence rate of CLABSI and CRT, and crude odds ratios (cORs) were estimated. RESULTS: Overall, 1936 individuals were included in the study. The median age was 67 years (IQR: 50-78 years), and 51.5% were females. The median duration of PICC lines was 10 days (IQR: 4-17). Seventy-nine patients had catheter-related complications, mostly in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The CLABSI and CRT institutional incidence rates per 1000 catheter-days were 2.03 (2.96 in the ICU) and 0.58 (0.61 in the ICU), respectively. Prolonged catheter use (≥ 6 days), PICC insertion in the intensive care unit, and postoperative care after cardiac surgery were identified as potential risk factors for CLABSI, while a catheter insertion into the brachial vein was associated with CRT. CONCLUSION: Daily PICC assessment, particularly in patients with prolonged catheter use, PICC insertion into the brachial vein, or in postoperative care after cardiac surgery may significantly reduce CLABSI and CRT cases. Implementing Vascular Access Teams, venous catheter care bundles, and institutional insertion protocols optimize clinical outcomes.

ABSTRACT In order to describe the incidence rates per 100 000 population of foodborne disease (FBD) cases during the period 2015-2020 in Ecuador, we carried out a secondary analysis of epidemiological surveillance records and population projections from the National Institute of Statistics and Census. A total of 113,695 cases were reported with an incidence of more than 100 cases per 100 000 population (2015-2019). In 2020, the records are considerably lower than those reported in previous years. Most cases were reported as "other food poisoning". The highest incidence rates of FBD were found in the Amazon region. In general, there is a marked annual variability in the incidence of FBD according to the geographic regions of Ecuador. In conclusion, FBD represent a public health problem in Ecuador. Comprehensive preventive strategies should be designed with special emphasis on the Amazon region.
RESUMO
BACKGROUND: Abortion is a public health problem in Latin America and is more common among women living with HIV. OBJECTIVE: to verify the incidence and factors associated with induced abortion in a cohort of women living with HIV assisted in a reference service for care for individuals with HIV/AIDS in Rio de Janeiro/Brazil. METHODS: Prospective cohort during the period 1996-2016. We estimated the incidence of induced abortions during follow-up in the cohort by calculating person-time incidence rates [per 100 persons-years (PY)] and investigated the factors associated with the outcome "induced abortion" using a generalized linear mixed model. RESULTS: 753 women and 210 pregnancies were included in the present analysis. We estimated an induced abortion incidence rate of 0.68/100 persons-years (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.47; 0.94) in the study period, with a significant reduction after 2006. The main factors associated with an induced abortion were currently living with a partner (adjusted OR [AdjOR] 0.32 95% CI: 0.10-0.98), number of children (2 children AdjOR 0.12, 95% CI: 0.02-0.95) and the type of antiretroviral treatment used (regimen without Efavirenz: AdjOR: 0.11, 95% CI 0.02-0.70). CONCLUSIONS: We showed a significant reduction in the incidence of induced abortions in a cohort of women living with HIV in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, probably due to a decrease in the incidence of pregnancies observed in the same period. The factors associated with a lower occurrence of induced abortion suggest a good integration between the clinical and reproductive assistance offered to those women.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: There are limited recent data on the burden of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) in the North American general population. We aimed to identify the CHB burden from a Canadian population-based perspective. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Using a retrospective cohort design, we searched Alberta Analytics administrative databases including the Provincial Laboratory database, to describe CHB epidemiology and natural history in Alberta, Canada between fiscal years 2012-2020. We analyzed incidence and prevalence trends using a Poisson regression model and conducted Kaplan-Meier analyses to examine the incident cohort's survival. RESULTS: The age/sex-adjusted incidence of CHB between 2015-2020 was 27.1/100,000 person/years (29.6/100,000 in males and 24.5/100,000 in females) and was highest among individuals aged 45-64 years. Despite a decrease in annual incidence of CHB from 36.4 to 13.4/100,000 between 2015-2020, prevalence increased from 98.9 to 210.3/100,000 in the same period. Of 6,860 incident cases, 2.1% died, and 0.2% underwent liver transplantation during a median follow-up of 3.6 years (interquartile range 2.0-4.9 years). CHB patients had significantly lower survival rates compared to age/sex-matched Canadians, with a standardized mortality ratio of 3.9 (95% confidence interval [CI] 3.3-4.6). Male sex (hazard ratio [HR] 1.7; 95% CI 1.2-2.5), older age at diagnosis (HR, 1.08; 95% CI 1.07-1.09) independently predicted mortality. CONCLUSIONS: CHB incidence decreased in Alberta, which is consistent with nationwide trends. Males and individuals aged 45-64 had higher CHB incidence and prevalence. CHB patients' lower survival rates emphasize the need to address barriers to guideline recommended HBV care linkage.
RESUMO
Background: There has been an increase in certain cancers among young adults (YA) aged 20-39, particularly in Latin America. This is the first study to examine cancer incidence and mortality in YA in Costa Rica, focusing on sex-specific patterns. Methods: Invasive cancer cases (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer) in YA from 2006 to 2015 were obtained from the Costa Rican National Registry of Tumors. Utilising SEER∗Stat software, age-standardized incidence rates (IRs) and incidence rate ratios (IRRs) were calculated. Trends and annual percent changes (APCs) in IRs were estimated using the Joinpoint regression analysis program. Cancer deaths from 2000 to 2021 were obtained from the Costa Rican National Institute of Statistics and Census. Age-standardised mortality rates were calculated using STATA®17. Findings: YA comprised 10.7% of all invasive cancer cases diagnosed from 2006 to 2015. The age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) of invasive cancer in YA was 50.9/100,000 person-years. The ASIR was twofold higher for females compared to males (IRR = 2.03, 95% CI:1.94, 2.13). This difference increased with age, peaking in the 35-39-year age group (IRR = 2.84, 95% CI:2.62, 3.10). Thyroid, breast, and cervical cancer were the most common in females. Testicular cancer was the most common in males. Leading causes of cancer-related deaths included cervical and breast cancer in females and stomach and brain/nervous system cancer in males. Interpretation: The study highlights sex-specific patterns in cancer incidence and mortality among YA in Costa Rica to increase understanding and improve cancer outcomes in this age group. Funding: This study was funded by the Intramural Research Program of the National Cancer Institute.
RESUMO
BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer incidence is rising in Puerto Rico (PR). Whether the increase is real or reflective of increased diagnostic scrutiny remains unclear. METHODS: Using data from the PR Central Cancer Registry for 2001-2019, we estimated trends of hysterectomy-corrected cervical cancer incidence and mortality rates, overall, and by stage at diagnosis and age. RESULTS: Overall, cervical cancer incidence (per 100,000) increased 1.6%/year (95% CI, -0.5% to 3.8%) from 12.5 to 15.3, with a prominent increase in distant-stage disease (4.5%/year [95% CI, 1.6% to 8.0%]), particularly among screening age eligible (25-64-year-old) women (5.8%/year [95% CI, 2.1% to 10.6%]). Mortality rates in this age-group remained stable during the study period. CONCLUSIONS: Increased occurrence of distant-stage disease among screening-eligible women is troubling and may reflect a real increase. Future research is needed to elucidate the factors underlying these trends. Improved prevention is also an urgent priority to reverse the rising cervical cancer incidence in PR.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the number and incidence of Kawasaki disease (KD) patients in years 2 through 4 of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, and determine the impact of 3 years of implementation of infection control measures and their subsequent relaxation on the epidemiology of KD in Japan. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a population-based, cohort study including consecutive KD patients in Kobe City between 2021 and 2023. We compared the incidence of KD cases, in relation to timing of infection control measures, as well as infectious disease cases based on a regional surveillance system. Data from a previous 2016 through 2020 study were used for comparison. RESULTS: A total of 566 children with KD were identified during the study period. During the infection control period in 2021 to 2022, the incidence of KD remained low compared with the prepandemic level (281.3 and 327.5/100 000 children aged 0-4 years in 2021 to 2022 and 2016 through 2019, respectively), but a recovery trend began in the 0-1-year age group. During the relaxation period in 2023, the incidence of KD increased across a wide-age range, reaching the highest recorded in Japan (426.7/100 000 children aged 0-4 years), and the median age of onset increased to age 30 months. The resurgence of KD coincided with the epidemic patterns for multiple infectious diseases in 2023. The seasonality of KD observed before the pandemic was altered. CONCLUSIONS: KD resurged in 2023 after relaxation of the prolonged coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic restrictions in Japan. This phenomenon coincided with the rise of multiple infectious diseases, and supports the pathogenesis of KD being triggered by infectious agents.
RESUMO
Introduction Congenital Syphilis (CS) is considered the second leading cause of preventable death in developing countries. The last report of the incidence rate of CS was made in 2017. Objective The objective of the study was to estimate the incidence of CS between 2019-2023. Materials and methods This is a retrospective study for which data were obtained from the new cases of CS reported in the Epidemiological Bulletin for 2019-2023 and from the newborn population records reported in the National Institute of Statistics and Geography and the National Population Council. Results In Mexico, the incidence rate of CS is 3.20 per 10,000 births. An increment of CS cases was observed between 2019-2023, with a higher number of cases in 2022. Conclusion A democratization of detection and prompt management is needed to reduce transmission, particularly among the most vulnerable population.
RESUMO
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The global incidence of interstitial lung disease (ILD) has risen over the past few decades. However, few studies have evaluated the status and incidence trends of ILD in Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS). This study assesses the trends of ILD incidence across the BRICS with an emphasis on ILD changes from 1990 to 2019. METHODS: Incidence rates were estimated by the data obtained from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 (GBD 2019). Age-period-cohort modelling was used to estimate the effects on ILD from 1990 to 2019, and the net drift and local drift were calculated. RESULTS: In 2019, a total of 11.4 million cases of ILD were reported in the BRICS countries. From 1990 to 2019, the incidence rate of ILD in BRICS showed an upward trend. India consistently reported the highest incidence rate, while China showed the fastest growth rate (107.6%). Russia reported a similar incidence rates for men and women, with a lower age of peak incidence compared to the other four countries. We found the time effect was unfavourable for BRICS in the first decade, especially for Brazil; in China and Brazil, the risk of people born after 1960 has rapidly decreased. CONCLUSION: ILD shows a rising incidence in BRICS. with the trends varying based on age and other environmental factors. BRICS should strengthen specific public health approaches and policies for different stages and populations.
RESUMO
During the COVID-19 pandemic, an increase in the incidence of bloodstream infections caused by fungi of the Candida genus, also known as candidemia, was observed in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. This study aimed to assess the incidence of candidemia, the factors related to COVID-19-associated candidemia (CAC), and prognostic factors. A non-concurrent cohort of 87 cases of patients aged over 18 years with candidemia between March 2020 and February 2022 was evaluated. Incidence density (ID) was calculated by the number of patient-days during the period. All causes of mortality within 30 days of observation were considered. Logistic regression and Cox proportional hazards regression were used, respectively, to determine factors associated with CAC and prognostic factors. Values <0.05 were considered significant. The ID of CAC was eight times higher than candidemia in patients without COVID-19 [2.40 per 1000 person-days vs. 0.27 per 1000 person-days; P < .01]. The corticosteroid therapy was as an independent factor associated with CAC [OR = 15.98 (3.64-70.03), P < .01], while abdominal surgery was associated with candidemia in patients without COVID-19 [OR = 0.09 (0.01-0.88), P = .04]. Both patients with and without COVID-19 had a high 30 days-mortality rate (80.8% vs. 73.8%, respectively; P = .59). Liver disease [HR = 3.36 (1.22-9.27); P = .02] and the Charlson score [HR = 1.17 (1.01-1.34); P = .03] were independent factors of death, while the use of antifungals [HR = 0.15 (0.07-0.33); P < .01] and removal of the central venous catheter [HR = 0.26 (0.12-0.56); P < .01] independently reduced the risk of death. These findings highlight the high incidence of candidemia in COVID-19 patients and its elevated mortality.
This study found that bloodstream infections by Candida spp. were significantly more common in patients with than without COVID-19, and Candida glabrata played a significant role in these infections. Liver disease and a higher number of comorbidities were associated with an increased risk of death.

This commentary delves into the evolving landscape of cancer incidence and mortality in Costa Rica, presenting a comprehensive analysis of the data. Key findings reveal a concerning upward trajectory in cancer incidence rates, placing Costa Rica at the forefront within Central America. While prostate cancer and breast cancer dominate, disparities emerge when scrutinizing gender-specific trends. Notably, stomach and cervical cancers show declines, potentially attributed to targeted interventions. However, colorectal and liver cancers witness mortality increases, necessitating strategic responses. Geographical disparities persist across provinces, highlighting the need for equitable healthcare access. In conclusion, this commentary underscores the urgency of addressing the burgeoning cancer burden in Costa Rica, calling for evidence-based interventions and collaborative efforts on a global scale.
RESUMO
CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Glaucoma encompasses a group of eye diseases that progressively damage the optic nerve, leading to vision loss and blindness. Understanding the incidence and demographic distribution is vital for public health planning and patient care. BACKGROUND: Previous small-scale studies in Colombia have reported the prevalence of glaucoma in individuals over 40 years between 1.1% and 5.29%. These data may not fully capture the true extent of the disease. Furthermore, with the ageing population, the incidence of glaucoma is likely to increase, highlighting the need for up-to-date incidence data to guide healthcare planning. METHODS: Data were obtained from the Social Protection Information System, the primary health record repository of Colombia, using the International Classification of Disease 10 for glaucoma. Crude incidence rates were calculated and adjusted for sex, age, and gender. The 2020 incidence was compared with estimated rates from previous years to assess the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 lockdown. A standardised morbidity map was created to show regional variations. RESULTS: The average incidence of glaucoma in Colombia was 17.36 per 1,000 inhabitants, increasing from 12.29 in 2015 to 24.22 in 2019. Of the 212,700 reported cases, 60.75% were females. Primary open-angle glaucoma was the most prevalent type, with significant incidence in the elderly over 70 years of age, irrespective of sex. Bogotá, Antioquia, and Valle del Cauca had the highest numbers of new cases. CONCLUSION: The increasing incidence of glaucoma and its demographic and geographical variations necessitate the awareness of ophthalmologists and optometrists. This study emphasises the need for continuous monitoring, effective interventions, and developing healthcare strategies to address the escalating challenge of glaucoma in Colombia.
RESUMO
BACKGROUND: Population-based cancer registries (PBCRs) are the primary source of information for cancer surveillance and monitoring. Currently, there are 30 active PBCRs in Brazil. The objective of this study was to analyze the data quality of five gastrointestinal cancers (esophagus, stomach, colorectal, liver, and pancreas) according to the criteria of comparability, validity, completeness, and timeliness in Brazilian cancer registries. METHODS: This study included data from Brazilian PBCRs with more than ten years of historical data starting in the year 2000, regardless of the type of defined geographical coverage (state, metropolitan region, or capital), totaling 16 registries. Brazilian PBCRs were evaluated based on four international data quality criteria: comparability, validity (accuracy), completeness, and timeliness. All cancer cases were analyzed, except for nonmelanoma skin cancer cases (C44) and five gastrointestinal tumors (esophageal cancer, stomach cancer, colorectal cancer, liver cancer, and pancreatic cancer) per cancer registry and sex, according to the available period. RESULTS: The 16 Brazilian PBCRs represent 17% of the population (36 million inhabitants in 2021) according to data from 2000 to 2018. There was a variation in the incidence in the historical series ranging from 12 to 19 years. The proportion of morphologically verified (MV%) cases varied from 74.3% (Manaus) to 94.8% (Aracaju), and the proportion of incidentally reported death certificate only (DCO%) cases varied from 3.0% (São Paulo) to 23.9% (Espírito Santo). High-lethality malignant neoplasms, such as liver and pancreas, had DCO percentages greater than 30% in most cancer registries. The sixteen registries have more than a 48-month delay in data release compared to the 2022 calendar year. CONCLUSION: The studied Brazilian cancer registries met international comparability criteria; however, half of the registries showed indices below the expected levels for validity and completeness criteria for high-lethality tumors such as liver and pancreas tumors, in addition to a long delay in data availability and disclosure. Significant efforts are necessary to ensure the operational and stability of the PBCR in Brazil, which continues to be a tool for monitoring cancer incidence and assessing national cancer control policies.

BACKGROUND: The Amazonas state/AM and Manaus rank among the highest AIDS detection rates in Brazil. High proportion of HIV infected blood donors and transmission clusters of multidrug antiretroviral/ARV resistant viruses were described in HEMOAM blood donors, a main Amazonas public blood bank. Recent and long-term infections among previously genotyped donors are reported. METHODS/MATERIALS: The recency immunoassay Lag Avidity EIA (Maxim, USA) was employed. Clinical/CD4/viral load medical file data of the main local HIV management center (FMT-HVD) and ARV treatment/ART data were reviewed. RESULTS: Among 142 HIV-blood donors, chronic infection predominated (n = 87; 61.3 %), 79 based on LAg EIA and 8 undisclosed HIV identified in FMT-HVD records, mostly young adult, single males, 4 repeat donors, all ART-naive. Recent infections represented 30.3 % (n = 43), 39 identified by LAg EIA and 4 immunologic windows (antibody negative/NAT/RNA positive). The overall profile of recent and long-term infections was similar, including moderate rate of transmitted drug resistance/TDR, however with multiple resistance mutations to more than one ARV-class, suggesting ART/failure. DISCUSSION: Recent/acute and undisclosed/long-term HIV infections represent blood safety alerts suggesting test-seeking behavior of at-risk populations. Early ART use in Brazil, can turn HIV diagnosis more challenging representing a blood transfusion risk in the highly endemic Brazilian Amazon.
