AIM: The main objective of the study was to develop and validate a model for the growth of Aspergillus brasiliensis on surfaces, specifically on agar culture medium. An additional aim was to determine conditions for complete growth inhibition of this micromycete using two different nonthermal plasma (NTP) sources. METHODS AND RESULTS: The developed model uses two key parameters, namely the growth rate and growth delay, which depend on the cultivation temperature and the amount of inoculum. These parameters well describe the growth of A. brasiliensis and the effect of NTP on it. For complete fungus inactivation, a single 10-minute exposure to a diffuse coplanar surface barrier discharge was sufficient, while a point-to-ring corona discharge required several repeated 10-minute exposures at 24-h intervals. CONCLUSIONS: The article presents a model for simulating the surface growth of A. brasiliensis and evaluates the effectiveness of two NTP sources in deactivating fungi on agar media.

The short-tail yellownose skate, Zearaja brevicaudata, occurs off southern Brazil and along the Argentine continental shelf, including waters surrounding the Islas Malvinas and the upper slope, and is very frequently caught by trawl fisheries throughout its range. The age, growth, and maturity of Z. brevicaudata were investigated using 204 individuals collected by commercial fishing vessels from northern Argentina, between March 2016 and September 2019. Age was determined on a sample comprising vertebrae from 151 individuals, 60 males, ranging in size from 391 to 956 mm total length (TL), and 91 females, ranging in size from 324 to 1060 mm TL. Maximum ages determined for males and females were 22 and 29 years, respectively. A Bayesian framework was employed with a set of three candidate models to estimate growth parameters (von Bertalanffy, Gompertz, and Logistic). The von Bertalanffy model had the best fit, and the sexes showed undistinguishable growth parameters. For sexes combined, derived growth mean parameters (± S.D.) were L∞ = 1081 mm ± 64.34 mm, k = 0.09 ± 0.01 years-1, and L0 = 248 mm ± 23.52 mm. The age at maturity was estimated at 13.15 and 14.66 years for males and females, respectively.

Cachaça is a traditional Brazilian drink that has the potential to offer a new sensory and technological strategy for artisanal cheesemaking, particularly for small-scale producers and family farming. This study aimed to investigate the effects of cachaça immersion on the physicochemical, microbiological, color, texture, and sensory parameters of artisanal goat coalho cheeses using three different varieties of cachaça immersion. The results showed that cachaça immersion did not affect the cheese's proximate composition or starter culture viability, indicating its suitability as a new method for artisanal cheese production. Additionally, gold cachaça aged in oak casks was the most effective variety for sensory acceptance and purchase intention, suggesting that it may be a valuable strategy for small-scale producers to add value and encourage the consumption of artisanal goat coalho cheeses without compromising their quality. Thus, this study provides important insights for small-scale producers and family farming to enhance their product offerings and increase their competitiveness in the market.

Physical-chemical characteristics of Minas Frescal cheese (MFC) favor the growth of Staphylococcus spp. and allow the production of enterotoxins by specific strains. Here, we aimed to characterize the physical-chemical aspects (pH, storage temperature, and salt content) and the presence of Staphylococcus spp. in MFC samples (n = 50) to support a modeling study for the growth by this microorganism. Coagulase-positive staphylococci isolates were obtained and subjected to PCR assays to identify them as Staphylococcus aureus (nuc) and to detect staphylococcal enterotoxin-related genes (sea, seb, sec, sed, see). Staphylococcus aureus growth kinetics (maximum growth rate, Grmax, and lag time) were predicted based on ComBase model and MFC physical-chemical aspects. Mean counts of Staphylococcus spp. ranged from 3.3 to 6.7 log cfu/g, indicating poor hygiene practices during production. Selected isolates (n = 10) were identified as S. aureus, but none presented classical enterotoxin-related genes. pH, temperature, and salt content ranged from 5.80 to 6.62, 5°C to 12°C, and 0.85% to 1.70%, respectively. The Grmax values ranged from 0.012 to 0.419 log cfu/g per h. Independent of the storage temperature, the lowest Grmax values (0.012 to 0.372 log cfu/h) were obtained at pH 5.80 associated with salt content of 1.7%; independent of the pH and salt content, the best temperature to avoid staphylococcal growth was 7.5°C. Hygienic conditions during MFC production must be adopted to avoid staphylococcal contamination, and storage at temperatures lower than 7.5°C can prevent staphylococcal growth and the potential production of enterotoxins.

Ample research has shown that the link between social skills and adolescent depression is significant. However, how the changes in different domains of social skills influence the change in depression from early to middle adolescence remains largely unknown. To address this gap in knowledge, the current research used longitudinal data from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (N = 1061) to examine the influences of the changes in cooperation, assertion, responsibility, and self-control on the change in depression from early to middle adolescence. Univariate latent growth modeling showed that, from early to middle adolescence, adolescents experience decreases in cooperation and assertion, increases in responsibility and depression, and stability in self-control. Multivariate latent growth modeling suggested that adolescents who had more increases in responsibility and self-control tended to experience a slower increase in depression from early to middle adolescence; while adolescents who had more decreases in cooperation and assertion tended to experience a faster increase in depression from early to middle adolescence. The results suggested that promoting adolescents social skills might be particularly salient for the prevention of adolescent depression.


Investigaciones han demostrado que hay un vínculo significativo entre las habilidades sociales y la depresión en adolescentes. Sin embargo no se tiene mucha claridad sobre cómo los diferentes dominios de las habilidades sociales influyen en la depresión durante la adolescencia media y temprana. Para abordar este tema se tomaron datos del Estudio de Cuidado Infantil y Desarrollo Juvenil del Early Child Care and Youth Development (N = 1061) donde se evaluó la influencia de la cooperación, aprobación, responsabilidad y autocontrol sobre la depresión en esta población. El modelo de crecimiento latente univariado mostró que, desde la adolescencia temprana a la media, los adolescentes experimentan disminución en la cooperación y la aprobación, aumento en la responsabilidad y la depresión, y estabilidad en el autocontrol. El modelo sugirió que los adolescentes que tenían más aumento en la responsabilidad y en el autocontrol, tendían a experimentar un incremento más lento de la depression, desde la adolescencia temprana hasta la media; mientras que los que tenían disminución en la cooperación y en la aprobación tendían a experimentar un aumento más rápido de la depresión en esta misma etapa de la asdolescencia. Los resultados sugirieron que la promoción de las habilidades sociales de los adolescentes podría ser particularmente importante para la prevención de la depresión adolescente.

Soil mechanical resistance, aeration, and water availability directly affect plant root growth. The objective of this work was to identify the contribution of mechanical and hydric stresses on maize root elongation, by modeling root growth while taking the dynamics of these stresses in an Oxisol into consideration. The maize crop was cultivated under four compaction levels (soil chiseling, no-tillage system, areas trafficked by a tractor, and trafficked by a harvester), and we present a new model, which allows to distinguish between mechanical and hydric stresses. Root length density profiles, soil bulk density, and soil water retention curves were determined for four compaction levels up to 50 cm in depth. Furthermore, grain yield and shoot biomass of maize were quantified. The new model described the mechanical and hydric stresses during maize growth with field data for the first time in maize crop. Simulations of root length density in 1D and 2D showed adequate agreement with the values measured under field conditions. Simulation makes it possible to identify the interaction between the soil physical conditions and maize root growth. Compared to the no-tillage system, grain yield was reduced due to compaction caused by harvester traffic and by soil chiseling. The root growth was reduced by the occurrence of mechanical and hydric stresses during the crop cycle, the principal stresses were mechanical in origin for areas with agricultural traffic, and water based in areas with soil chiseling. Including mechanical and hydric stresses in root growth models can help to predict future scenarios, and coupling soil biophysical models with weather, soil, and crop responses will help to improve agricultural management.

OBJECTIVE: To identify distinct longitudinal patterns of body mass index (BMI) z score in type 1 diabetes from childhood to young adulthood and secondly to determine sex differences as well as associated clinical covariates. STUDY DESIGN: A total of 5665 patients with type 1 diabetes (51% male) with follow-up from 8 to 20 years of age from the multicenter diabetes prospective registry DPV were studied (baseline diabetes duration ≥1 years, BMI z score aggregated per year of life). Latent class growth modeling (SAS: PROC TRAJ) was applied to analyze BMI z score over time. RESULTS: Six distinct BMI z score trajectories were identified (group 1: 7% of patients, group 2: 22%, group 3: 20%, group 4: 16%, group 5: 25%, and group 6: 10%). Group 1, 2, 5, and 6 had an almost stable BMI z score, either in the low, near-normal, high stable, or chronic overweight range. Group 3 (60% girls) increased their BMI during puberty, whereas group 4 (65% boys) had a BMI decrease. Similar patterns were observed for girls only, whereas boys followed nearly stable trajectories without fluctuation over time. Between the near-normal and the other groups, significant differences (P < .05) in sex ratio, migration background, mental health, height z score, glycated hemoglobin A1c, diabetes treatment, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and smoking were observed. CONCLUSIONS: In youth with type 1 diabetes, a great heterogeneity of BMI z score trajectories exists that highlight the importance of personalized sex-specific intervention programs for subjects at risk for unfavorable BMI development.

BACKGROUND: The intensive use of chlordecone (an organochlorine insecticide) in the French West Indies until 1993 resulted in a long-term soil and water contamination. Chlordecone has known hormonal properties and exposure through contaminated food during critical periods of development (gestation and early infancy) may affect growth. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to assess the impact of prenatal and postnatal exposure to chlordecone on the growth of children from the TIMOUN mother-child cohort. METHODS: Chlordecone was determined in cord plasma at birth (N=222) and in breast milk samples (at 3 months). Dietary chlordecone intake was estimated at 7 and 18 months, with food-frequency questionnaires and food-specific contamination data. Anthropometric measurements were taken at the 3-, 7- and 18-month visits and measurements reported in the infants' health records were noted. Structured Jenss-Bayley growth models were fitted to individual height and weight growth trajectories. The impact of exposure on growth curve parameters was estimated directly with adjusted mixed non-linear models. Weight, height and body mass index (BMI), and instantaneous height and weight growth velocities at specific ages were also analyzed relative to exposure. RESULTS: Chlordecone in cord blood was associated with a higher BMI in boys at 3 months, due to greater weight and lower height, and in girls at 8 and 18 months, mostly due to lower height. Postnatal exposure was associated with lower height, weight and BMI at 3, 8 and 18 months, particularly in girls. CONCLUSION: Chlordecone exposure may affect growth trajectories in children aged 0 to 18 months.
