OBJECTIVE: To identify the preferred choices of antimicrobials by veterinarians for addressing infectious diseases in Golden Retrievers across the US. ANIMALS: 3,044 Golden Retrievers enrolled in the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study. METHODS: Demographic and veterinary visit data were retrieved from the Morris Animal Foundation Golden Retriever Lifetime Study, following 3,044 Golden Retrievers spanning from 2012 to 2020 collected through questionnaires. The R Studio program was used to clean and analyze the data in which the most common diagnoses were evaluated along with the most frequently used antimicrobials stratified by geographical region within the US. RESULTS: The most common diagnoses reported and treated with antimicrobials were otitis externa, diarrhea/gastritis, hot spots, and bladder infections. Otitis externa was the most frequently reported medical diagnosis as well as prescribed with antibiotics. The Southern region reported the most antimicrobial use, followed by the Midwest and Northeast. Of the total reported antibiotics prescribed for infectious disease, aminoglycosides were the most frequent (370/1,874 [19.74%]) followed by first-generation cephalosporins, nitroimidazoles, and penicillins. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: More effort in the prevention of otitis externa in Golden Retrievers may reduce overall antimicrobial usage and promote effective antimicrobial stewardship to combat further antimicrobial resistance.

The GOLDEN2-LIKE (GLK) transcription factors act as a central regulatory node involved in both developmental processes and environmental responses. Marchantia polymorpha, a basal terrestrial plant with strategic evolutionary position, contains a single GLK representative that possesses an additional domain compared to spermatophytes. We analyzed the role of MpGLK in chloroplast biogenesis and development by altering its levels, preforming transcriptomic profiling and conducting chromatin immunoprecipitation. Decreased MpGLK levels impair chloroplast differentiation and disrupt the expression of photosynthesis-associated nuclear genes, while overexpressing MpGLK leads to ectopic chloroplast biogenesis. This demonstrates the MpGLK functions as a bona fide GLK protein, likely representing an ancestral GLK architecture. Altering MpGLK levels directly regulates the expression of genes involved in Chl synthesis and degradation, similar to processes observed in eudicots, and causes various developmental defects in Marchantia, including the formation of dorsal structures such as air pores and gemma cups. MpGLK, also directly activates MpMAX2 gene expression, regulating the timing of gemma cup development. Our study shows that MpGLK functions as a master regulator, potentially coupling chloroplast development with vegetative reproduction. This illustrates the complex regulatory networks governing chloroplast function and plant development communication and highlight the evolutionary conservation of GLK-mediated regulatory processes across plant species.

The golden lion tamarin (GLT) is an Endangered primate endemic to Brazil's lowland Atlantic Forest. After centuries of deforestation and capture for the pet trade, only a few hundred individuals survived, all in isolated forest fragments 85 km from Rio de Janeiro city. Intensive conservation actions, including reintroduction of zoo-born tamarins, increased numbers to about 3700 in 2014. The most severe yellow fever epidemic/epizootic in Brazil in 80 years reduced two of the largest GLT populations by over 90%. Herein we report the results of a 2023 survey of GLTs designed to examine the dynamics of population recovery following yellow fever. Results indicate that populations hard hit by yellow fever are recovering due in part to immigration from adjacent forest fragments. No local extirpations were observed. About 4800 GLTs live in the survey area. This represents a 31% increase since the baseline survey completed in 2014. Two factors explain most of the increase: four large areas that had no GLTs or very low-density populations in 2014 are now at moderate density (three areas) or low density (one area), explaining 71% of overall increase since 2014. Increase in forest area within our survey area may explain up to 16% of the increase in GLT numbers since 2014. Results of computer simulations suggest that strengthening forest connectivity will facilitate metapopulation resilience in the face of mortality factors such as yellow fever.

In a study addressing the high risk of chronic diseases in people with diabetes and obesity linked to metabolic syndrome, the impact of a Golden Berry diet was investigated using a diabetic animal model. Obese rats with diabetic characteristics were fed a diet containing five percent Golden Berry for 16 days. This study focused on various parameters including organ weights, expression of metabolic genes, and urinary biomarkers. Post-Golden Berry intake, there was a notable decrease in the body, liver, pancreas, visceral, and subcutaneous adipose tissue weights in these obese, hyperglycemic rats. In contrast, an increase in brown adipose tissue (BAT) cell mass was observed. This diet also resulted in reduced blood glucose levels and normalized plasma biochemical profiles, including cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, and HDL levels. Additionally, it modulated specific urinary biomarkers, particularly pipe-colic acid, a primary marker for type 2 diabetes. Bioinformatics analysis linked these dietary effects to improved insulin signaling and adipogenesis. Regular consumption of Golden Berry effectively prevented insulin resistance and obesity in rats, underscoring its significant health benefits and the protective role of an antioxidant-rich diet against metabolic syndrome. These findings offer promising insights for future therapeutic strategies to manage and prevent obesity and related chronic diseases.

Invasive alien species (IAS) exert a negative impact on native ecosystems and on various human activities. Limnoperna fortunei (Dunker 1857), a sessile mytilid introduced from Asia in the Río de la Plata, demonstrates a high dispersal capacity, growing over other organisms and artificial structures. Understanding its behavior is crucial for developing appropriate control and mitigating its detrimental effects. This study investigated the population dynamics of this mollusk in response to urban effluents in a large river. Water and population parameters of L. fortunei were measured both upstream and downstream of a small town from July to December 2020. Downstream areas exhibited increased temperature and decreased transparency compared to upstream locations, while pH, conductivity, and dissolved oxygen remained relatively constant. However, downstream, the L. fortunei population comprised fewer and smaller individuals, displaying high width-to-length ratios. Most measured water parameters exhibited significant differences between sampling months. The abundance of L. fortunei remained relatively stable over time due to its nearly continuous reproduction in Uruguay. Nonetheless, shell elongation (15.3-22.8 mm) coincided with an increase in dry weight (0.009-0.038 g) from winter to spring. Allometric relationships, primarily following a power-law model, varied between months, ranging from H = 0.39L1.04 to H = 1.36L0.57. This study contributes to the comprehension of the population dynamics and life history of L. fortunei, thereby aiding in the conservation of invaded aquatic systems. Moreover, it provides valuable insights into the effects of urban effluents on this species, contributing to our understanding of its potential role as a bioindicator.

Limnoperna fortunei, the golden mussel, is a bivalve mollusk considered an invader in South America. This species is responsible for ecological and economic damages due to its voluminous fouling capability. Chemical biocides such as MXD-100™ and sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC) are often used to control L. fortunei infestations in hydraulic systems. Thus, we proposed to investigate the effects of different periods (24, 48 and 72 h) of exposure to MXD-100™ (0.56 mg L-1) and NaDCC (1.5 mg L-1) on the gills of L. fortunei through morphological and molecular analyses. NaDCC promoted progressive morphological changes during the analyzed periods and only an upregulation of SOD and HSP70 expression during the first 24 h of exposure. MXD-100™ led to severe morphological changes from the first period of exposure, in addition to an upregulation of SOD, CAT, HSP70 and CYP expression during the first 24 h. In contrast, MXD-100™ led to a downregulation of CAT transcription between 24 and 48 h. In static conditions, NaDCC causes lethal damage after 72 h of exposure, and that exposure needs to be continuous to achieve the control of the species. Meanwhile, the MXD-100™ treatment presented several effects during the first 24 h, showing acute toxicity in a shorter period of time.

Baculoviruses are insect-specific pathogens widely used in biotechnology. In particular, the Autographa californica nucleopolyhedrovirus (AcMNPV) has been exploited as a platform for bio-inputs production. This is why the improvement of the technologies used for the production of recombinant baculoviruses takes on particular relevance. To achieve this goal, we developed a highly versatile baculoviral transfer vector generation system called PluriBAC. The PluriBAC system consists of three insert entry levels using Golden Gate assembly technology. The wide availability of vectors and sticky ends allows enough versatility to combine more than four different promoters, genes of interest, and terminator sequences. Here, we report not only the rational design of the PluriBAC system but also its use for the generation of baculoviral reporter vectors applied to different fields of biotechnology. We demonstrated that recombinant AcMNPV baculoviruses generated with the PluriBAC system were capable of infecting Spodoptera frugiperda larvae. On the other hand, we found that the recombinant budded virions (BV) generated using our system were capable of transducing different types of tumor and normal cells both in vitro and in vivo. Our findings suggest that the PluriBAC system could constitute a versatile tool for the generation of insecticide and gene therapy vectors.

The internet is one of the world’s main communication channels these days. Unfortunately, because of its accessibility, this digital media also enables the circulation of biased and unreliable information, like fake news. Snakes, for example, are, to this day, target of the sensationalist media, which pictures them as scary and violent animals and makes people kill them because they think they’re evil beings. This may cause many snake species to be endangered, including the golden lancehead pit viper (Bothrops insularis). This species is endemic to Ilha da Queimada Grande and is object of misinformation on the part of many national and international communication channels. In this sense, this study aimed to identify false information about the biology and ecology of B. insularis disseminated by digital media in the last ten years, and, later, clarify them based on reliable sources to demystify the species in question. Incorrect data about the venom, habits, population size, diet, morphology, and reproduction of B. insularis were collected from internet sources and stored in tables and graphics, and then the frequency with which the data about each considered topic were found was calculated. A bibliographic survey was conducted to identify and clarify the wrong information that were found. A total of 174 false information about B. insularis was collected, given that 113 were about its venom (64,9%), 32 about its population size (18,4%), 12 about its habits (6,9%), eight about its diet (4,6%), seven about its body size (4%) and two about its reproduction (1,1%). These results highlight the necessity to invest even more in scientific divulgation and environmental education projects to bring people closer to these animals and make them understand their ecological roles and the importance of conserving all species of snakes, especially the endangered island species.


A internet é considerada atualmente um dos principais meios de comunicação do mundo. Paradigmaticamente, entretanto, decorrente de sua acessibilidade, essa mídia digital também permite a circulação de informações tendenciosas, pouco confiáveis ou inverídicas, como é o caso das fake news. As serpentes, por exemplo, são até hoje alvo da mídia sensacionalista, que as retrata como animais assustadores e violentos, fazendo com que as pessoas as matem por acharem que são seres maldosos. Isso acaba colocando em risco inúmeras espécies de serpentes, venenosas ou não, incluindo a jararaca-ilhoa (Bothrops insularis), endêmica da Ilha da Queimada Grande, a qual é objeto de desinformação por parte dos diversos veículos de comunicação digitais nacionais e internacionais. Desse modo, este estudo teve como objetivo identificar informações falsas referentes à biologia e ecologia de B. insularis veiculadas em meios digitais nos últimos dez anos e, posteriormente, esclarecê-las com base em fontes bibliográficas confiáveis para desmistificar a espécie estudada. Foi realizado um levantamento de fontes da internet que contivessem informações incorretas sobre o veneno, hábito, tamanho populacional, alimentação, morfologia e reprodução de B. insularis. Os resultados foram organizados em tabelas e gráficos, e foi calculada a frequência com que os dados sobre cada tópico analisado foram encontrados. Para a identificação e posterior esclarecimento dessas informações, foi realizado um levantamento bibliográfico em fontes científicas. Foram coletadas 174 informações falsas sobre B. insularis, sendo 113 sobre o veneno (64,9%), 32 sobre o tamanho populacional (18,4%), 12 sobre o hábito (6,9%), oito sobre a alimentação (4,6%), sete sobre o comprimento do corpo (4%) e duas sobre a reprodução (1,1%). Estes resultados evidenciam a necessidade de investir ainda mais em projetos de divulgação científica e educação ambiental, a fim de aproximar as pessoas desses animais e fazê-las entender sua função ecológica e a importância de conservar as diversas espécies ofídicas, em especial as insulares ameaçadas de extinção.

Cape gooseberry fruits are increasingly recognized due to their excellent organoleptic and functional characteristics as a food. As the cultivation of this fruit expands, it is necessary to determine the quality characteristics and evolution of the new growing zones. This study sought to characterize the growth and development of cape gooseberry fruits, Ecotype Colombia, in the Ventaquemada region (Department of Boyacá in Colombia). For the experiments, 50 plants were taken completely at random from which 20 flowers of the middle third were selected and marked considering that 50% of the flowers were open. The selected cape gooseberry plants were 9 months old from the establishment. Samples were carried out every 5-7 days to evaluate changes in different physiological and physicochemical properties of the fruits such as equatorial diameter, weight, dry matter, respiration intensity (RI), total soluble solids (SST), titratable acidity (TA), and maturity ratio (SST/TA). Logistic and modified enzyme kinetics models were fitted to represent the change in these characteristics as a function of growth time and to establish a suitable maturity index. A rapid increase in the growth and a substantive change in the properties of the fruits were observed between 36 and 45 days after anthesis (DAA) and stabilization between 60 and 65 DAA, which constitutes the stage of physiological maturity. At this stage, fruits with a polar/equatorial diameter of 2.2-2.5 cm, 14.9% TSS, 2.2% TA, and 191.7 cm3 CO2 /g/d RI were obtained. Likewise, from the adjusted models, it was possible to identify these changes, especially for the relative growth rate (RGR), color index, and maturity ratio. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: In this work, we present the characterization of some physicochemical properties of cape gooseberry throughout its development and preharvest growth. This fruit is of wide interest due to its broad nutritional properties and is known as a "superfruit." The monitoring of the changes in the quality characteristics is important because it allows producers to define an optimum maturity stage for its commercialization. We also fit suitable regression models to relate the evolution in the product as a function of time and provide prediction tools to monitor fruit development. The above can help growers better schedule their production cycles.

Gateway system is one of the most known cloning systems, which makes it compatible with several expression vectors, including those used for Yeast Two-Hybrid (Y2H) and Bimolecular Fluorescence Complementation (BiFC) assays. However, this system is laborious and expensive due to its two-step cloning. In this research, we developed a new cloning strategy named Brick into the Gateway (BiG). This approach uses GoldenBraid/Gate assemblies to create a DNA fragment of interest flanked by attL sites, which can be directly recombined into Gateway destination vectors. BiG method showed a high recombination efficiency and ensured the correct reading frame, which was successfully tested in Y2H and BiFC assays. BiG has proven to be a rapid, low-cost, reusable, and directional cloning method which allows the merged use of systems.

SUMMARY: The foramen magnum (FM) is a transition zone between the spine and skull. There is a study in the literature showing the golden ratio (4.62) and harmony between both FM and the anteroposterior and transverse diameters of the skull. The aim of this study is to examine the existence of this ratio on CT images and to investigate whether this ratio changes according to the FM shape types. In this study, 402 adult CT images belonging to the Turkish population were examined. Maximum cranial length (MCL), maximum cranial width (MCW) and the FM length (FML) and FM width (FMW) were measured. The different shapes of the FM were macroscopically classified. The number and incidence of each type in the studied skull was registered. In the 402 CT images used in the study, 12 FM shapes were detected. Three of the shape types observed in our study have not been reported in the literature until now, and were found in our study for the first time. In addition, our data supported that by using the ratio of 4.62, there was a great harmony between the skull and FM. The results obtained from the research show that there is a ratio of 4.62 between the basic cranial measurements and FM dimensions in all shapes except triangular shape. It is thought that repeating the calculated coefficients over more different FM shapes will contribute to the effectiveness of the proposed golden ratio.


RESUMEN: El foramen magno (FM) es una zona de transición entre la columna y el cráneo. Existe un estudio en la literatura que muestra la proporción áurea (4,62) y la armonía entre el FM y los diámetros anteroposterior y transversal del cráneo. El objetivo de este estudio fue examinar la existencia de esta relación en las imágenes de TC e investigar si esta relación cambia según los tipos de forma del FM. Se examinaron 402 imágenes de TC de adultos pertenecientes a la población turca. Se midieron la longitud craneal máxima, el ancho craneal máximo y la longitud del FM y la anchura del FM. Las diferentes formas del FM se clasificaron macroscópicamente. Se registró el número e incidencia de cada tipo en el cráneo estudiado. En las 402 imágenes de TC utilizadas en el estudio, se detectaron 12 formas de FM. Tres de los tipos de formas observados en nuestro estudio no se han reportado en la literatura consultada describiéndose por primera vez. Además, nuestros datos respaldaron que al usar la proporción de 4,62, había una armonía importante entre el cráneo y el FM. Los resultados obtenidos de la investigación muestran que existe una relación de 4,62 entre las medidas craneales básicas y las dimensiones de la FM en todas las formas excepto en la triangular. Se cree que la repetición de los coeficientes calculados en más formas de FM diferentes contribuirá a la eficacia de la proporción áurea propuesta.

Cloning systems like Gateway and Golden Gate/Braid are known because of their efficiency and accuracy. While the main drawback of Gateway is the expensive cost of the enzymes used in its two-step (LR and BP) reaction, Golden Gate requires non-reusable components due to their specific restriction sites. We present the Brick into the Gateway (BiG) protocol as a new cloning strategy, faster and more economic method that combines (i) reusable modules or bricks assembled by the GoldenBraid approach, and (ii) Gateway LR reactions [recombination of attachment sites: attL (L from left) and attR (R from right)] avoiding the BP reaction [recombination of attachment sites: attP (P from phage) and attB (B from bacteria)] usually necessary in the Gateway cloning. The starting point is to perform a PCR reaction to add type IIS restriction sites into DNA fragments generating specific fusion sites. Then, this PCR product is used to design GoldenBraid bricks, including the attL Gateway recombination sites. Using the Golden Gate method, these bricks are assembled to produce an attL1 -gene of interest- attL2 fragment, which is integrated into a compatible vector producing a Gateway entry vector. Finally, the fragment containing the target gene is recombined by LR reaction into the Gateway destination vector. BACKGROUND: The golden mussel (Limnoperna fortunei) is a highly invasive species that causes environmental and socioeconomic losses in invaded areas. Reference genomes have proven to be a valuable resource for studying the biology of invasive species. While the current golden mussel genome has been useful for identifying new genes, its high fragmentation hinders some applications. FINDINGS: In this study, we provide the first chromosome-level reference genome for the golden mussel. The genome was built using PacBio HiFi, 10X, and Hi-C sequencing data. The final assembly contains 99.4% of its total length assembled to the 15 chromosomes of the species and a scaffold N50 of 97.05 Mb. A total of 34,862 protein-coding genes were predicted, of which 84.7% were functionally annotated. A significant (6.48%) proportion of the genome was found to be in a hemizygous state. Using the new genome, we have performed a genome-wide characterization of the Doublesex and Mab-3 related transcription factor gene family, which has been proposed as a target for population control strategies in other species. CONCLUSIONS: From the applied research perspective, a higher-quality genome will support genome editing with the aim of developing biotechnology-based solutions to control invasion. From the basic research perspective, the new genome is a high-quality reference for molecular evolutionary studies of Mytilida and other Lophotrochozoa, and it may be used as a reference for future resequencing studies to assess genomic variation among different golden mussel populations, unveiling potential routes of dispersion and helping to establish better control policies.

BACKGROUND: Limnoperna fortunei is a freshwater bivalve mollusc originally from southern Asia that invaded South America in the 1990's. Due to its highly efficient water pumping and filtering, and its capacity to form strong adhesions to a variety of substrates by byssus thread, this invasive species has been able to adapt to several environments across South America, causing significant ecological and economic damages. By gaining a deeper understanding of the biological and ecological aspects of L. fortunei we will be able to establish more effective strategies to manage its invasion. The gills of the mollusc are key structures responsible for several biological functions, including respiration and feeding. In this work, we characterized the ultrastructure of L. fortunei gills and its ciliary epithelium using light microscopy, transmission and scanning electron microscopies. This is the first report of the morphology of the epithelial cells and cilia of the gill of L. fortunei visualized in high resolution. RESULTS: The analysis showed highly organized and abundant ciliary structures (lateral cilia, laterofrontal cirri and frontal cilia) on the entire length of the branchial epithelium. Mitochondria, smooth endoplasmic reticulum and glycogen granules were abundantly found in the epithelial cells of the gills, demonstrating the energy-demanding function of these structures. Neutral mucopolysaccharides (low viscosity mucus) were observed on the frontal surface of the gill filaments and acid mucopolysaccharides (high viscosity mucus) were observed to be spread out, mainly on the lateral tract. Spherical vesicles, possibly containing mucus, could also be observed in these cells. These findings demonstrate the importance of the mucociliary processes in particle capture and selection. CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest that the mechanism used by this mollusc for particle capture and selection could contribute to a better understanding of key aspects of invasion and also in the establishment of more efficient and economically viable strategies of population control.

This study evaluated the biocidal activity of aqueous fruit extracts from Ilex paraguariensis progenies at different ripening stages in two ecotoxicity assays using Pomacea canaliculata juveniles and Danio rerio larvae. Mutagenicity was verified by the Salmonella/microsome assay (TA 98 and TA 100) in the presence and absence of hepatic metabolism in vitro. The results showed that the snails were more sensitive than the larvae to the P.1 progeny extracts in all three evaluated ripening stages. P.3 progeny extracts were the most toxic to Danio rerio larvae after 96 hours of exposure. The toxicity results indicate that the progenies' selection influenced the metabolic contents present in the fruits in all ripening stages over time, indicating high molluscicidal activity for the P.1 progeny. In the Salmonella/microsome assays, the semi-ripe and ripe extracts from progenies P.1 and P.3 showed mainly base pair substitution mutation in assays with metabolism, but at higher doses than the toxic concentrations detected for Danio rerio or Pomacea canaliculata. Therefore, the toxicological investigation of the progenies' extracts can be interesting, given the selection of plant materials influenced the response of the bioassays.

In the last decade, unprecedented arrivals of pelagic Sargassum (Sargassum influx) have been reported for the Caribbean coasts causing severe ecological and economical affectations and remarking the necessity to characterize the phenomenon. In the north coast of the Mexican Caribbean, spatial characterization of Sargassum influx was performed in terms of its abundance, species composition and chemical content using a combination of in situ sampling and remote sensing evaluations. Sargassum influx was detected within the 25 km fringe near to Quintana Roo coast in coincidence with beach-cast events during September 2018. Significant spatial variation in abundance and species composition of the stranded biomass was found for the six localities studied, which was related to the local environmental conditions. Pelagic species of Sargassum were the main component ranging from 78.1 to 99.6% of the total beach-cast (wrack) fresh biomass, whereas benthic macrophytes (seagrasses and macroalgae) were a minor component reaching up to 21% in some localities. The biochemical composition of beach-cast Sargassum resulted spatially homogeneous for most of the components analyzed; only carbon tissue content, ash metals (particularly Fe and As) and isotopic composition changed spatially. This study represents baseline information for the region. Long-term seasonal evaluations of Sargassum influx along Mexican Caribbean are required to define adequate management strategies and exploitation.

Since long ago, pelagic Sargassum mats have been known to be abundant in the Sargasso Sea, where they provide habitat to diverse organisms. However, over the last few years, massive amounts of pelagic Sargassum have reached the coast of several countries in the Caribbean and West Africa, causing economic and environmental problems. Aiming for lessening the impacts of the blooms, governments and private companies remove the seaweeds from the shore, but this process results expensive. The valorization of this abundant biomass can render Sargassum tides into an economic opportunity and concurrently solve their associated environmental problems. Despite the diverse fields where algae have found applications and the relevance of this recurrent situation, Sargassum biomass remains without large scale applications. Therefore, this review aims to present the potential uses of these algae, identifying the limitations that must be assessed to effectively valorize this bioresource. Due to the constraints identified for each of the presented applications, it is concluded that a biorefinery approach should be developed to effectively valorize this abundant biomass. However, there is an urgent need for investigations focusing on holopelagic Sargassum to be able to truly valorize this seaweed.

Se is a beneficial nutrient for some plant species, while As is considered a toxic element, even at low concentrations. This study investigated the interaction between As and Se on golden flaxseed (Linum usitatissimum L.) seedlings to better understand the extent of Se in the mitigation of As uptake and translocation. In addition, co-exposure experiments allowed to determine how As and Se affected absorption and distribution of the essential micronutrients Fe, Zn and Mn. Seedlings were cultivated in a 10 % v v-1 Hoagland solution supplemented with AsV, SeIV, SeVI or AsV + SeIV at different concentrations. SeVI presented the highest toxicity and translocation factor. The toxicity of AsV was attenuated by SeIV, which stimulated As uptake and translocation. SeIV reduced As accumulation, establishing a tolerance mechanism. Only a high concentration of As (200 µmol L-1) led to leaf chlorosis or seedling death, independently of co-exposure with Se species. Co-exposure also altered the uptake of Fe, Zn and Mn, without affecting As translocation from roots to shoot. In general, the interaction of As with Se was beneficial for golden flaxseed seedlings, when compared to the effects of As solely.

The transfer of food between adults is uncommon in primates. Although golden lion tamarins (Leontopithecus rosalia) are unique among primates in the extent to which they transfer food, reports of food transfers between adults have so far been restricted to captive or reintroduced individuals. Here, I report the first recorded events of adult-adult food transfers in golden lion tamarins between individuals belonging to different groups in the wild. Given that individuals emigrate from their natal group to find reproductive opportunities, I suggest that intergroup food transfers could be a way for individuals to estimate the quality or availability of potential mates or social partners. I propose an additional function of food transfers in wild golden lion tamarins: that they create and strengthen social bonds with individuals outside of the family group.

Leptospirosis is a world-wide zoonotic disease caused by pathogenic Leptospira and can be asymptomatic or can cause clinical signs ranging from influenza-like to multi-organ failure and death in severe cases. While species and strain specificity can play a major role in disease presentation, the hamster is susceptible to most leptospiral infections and is the model of choice for vaccine efficacy testing. During evaluation of blood smears from hamsters challenged with different species and strains of Leptospira, a circulating population of large, mononuclear, lipid-filled cells, most similar to foamy macrophages (FMs), was detected. Circulating FMs were identified by Giemsa staining and verified by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. FMs were found in the circulating blood of all Leptospira-challenged hamsters, indicating that the finding was not species or strain specific, although higher numbers of FMs tended to correlate with severity of disease. The unique finding of circulating FMs in the hamster model of leptospirosis can yield additional insights into the pathogenesis of leptospirosis and other diseases that induce circulating FMs.
